Part 1
Thank you for the lovely feedback on part 1 of modern prince!Harry <33
NOTE: I decided to give my MC a name (which I also edited into part 1). I hope you enjoy Rose and Harry’s story!!!! this part is not edited oops
***
Harry was on TV and he looked like a star. Rose watched him from the comfort of her living room while she sipped her morning coffee.
It was a live broadcast showing his arrival to the event with his family including the queen, his mother. She was an intimidatingly beautiful woman who gained the respect of the entire country, if not the entire world throughout her life. She was known to be strict on tradition, but she’d done so much for the country when it came to helping the less fortunate, advocating for global health, and supporting free education for everyone.
Now that she was older and had quite a few children, she passed on some of her duties to them. They, including Harry, followed in her footsteps, looking out for the population by supporting the same causes their mother dedicated her life to as a young woman. Their role was to represent the queen, and they did so flawlessly.
Rose didn’t want to admit that she’d googled Harry the day he sent flowers to her office, but she did, and she was reminded of the fact that Harry was heir to the throne. She never cared much for learning about the royal family and this was something everyone knew, but reading it after meeting him was like a big wake-up call. She’d danced with a man who would one day become king. She tried not to let herself think about it too much, or else she knew her thoughts would spiral out of control.
Harry and his brother wore a simple black suit, a change from his usual style, and his mother and sisters were donned in modest dresses she knew were designer and likely cost the same as her home.
Men with flashing cameras were going crazy behind the gates, desperately trying to get the perfect shot of the country’s “perfect” family.
Upon seeing the paparazzi, Rose was instantly reminded of how lucky she and Harry were to not have been caught by anyone when they went out. She quickly picked up her phone and googled Harry’s name and filtered the results to hours before the charity event just to be sure. She sighed in relief when there were no photos or stories of the both of them.
She relaxed into her sofa and fixed her eyes on the television, watching the rest of the event, subconsciously smiling every time Harry’s handsome face popped up on the screen.
***
Three days later at work, Rose received a text from Harry. What are you doing tonight?
She quickly replied, I have a date with a really hot guy I met a while back.
She barely put her phone down before it pinged with another message. What? Who is he? Tell him you’re busy.
She grinned. I don’t know. He’s kind of cute. Did I mention he’s a prince?
Her phone vibrated with a call, Harry’s name in block letters at the top of the screen. She accepted the call and brought it up to her ear. “Hello?”
“You’re not funny.”
She barked out a laugh, then winced and apologized to her coworkers whose desks were adjacent to hers. “I think I am.”
She heard him huff through the line then say, “Can I pick you up at seven?”
“Where do you want to take me?” She asked, tamping down her giddiness. It had only been less than a week since she’d last seen him, but she missed him.
“I thought we could take a walk on the beach, maybe have some ice cream?”
“How romantic of you,” she teased.
She could almost see his eyes rolling. “Are you in? I haven’t been able to go out in public since that morning charity.”
“Why not?”
He sighed. “Normally after making such a public appearance, we’re encouraged to stay low-key for a couple days. Something about the media being on high alert.”
Suddenly remembering the thoughts she had the morning she watched him on TV, she instantly knew what he meant. Rose worried her lip between her teeth as she tried to form the words to articulate the worry that had been building up since that day.
“Harry, will there be people following us?” She closed her eyes, hoping she didn’t sound stupid.
The other end of the line was quiet for a moment before he finally spoke up. “You know what, change of plans. Wear something comfortable.”
“Oh,” she ran a hand through her hair and sat back in her chair. “Okay.”
“I can’t wait to see you, Rose.”
She smiled. “You too,” she whispered.
***
Harry said to wear something comfortable, so she slipped on the most comfortable outfit she owned: A pair of joggers and matching crewneck. He’d only ever seen her dressed up, she figured she would let herself look more casual for once. Her doorbell rang just as she was slipping on a pair of Nikes. Reaching over, she opened the door to reveal a nervous-looking Harry standing with his car key in hand.
“Hi,” he said, a smile breaking onto his face at the sight of her then pulling her in for a hug.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, breathing in the cologne she absolutely loved.
“You look lovely,” he said as he pulled back to take a look at her.
She couldn’t resist kissing his cheek. “Please, I’m wearing glorified pyjamas.”
He looked down at his own pair of joggers and t-shirt. “I’d say you understood the assignment.”
She laughed as she followed him to his flashy car. It wasn’t the same one he picked her up in on their previous date, but just as nice.
Less than a half hour later, Harry had driven them to the middle of the city and into an underground parking garage of a large high-rise building. One of the tallest she’d ever seen in person. It had a modern design, the surface covered in mirrored windows. He drove through the garage until the car reached a closed door. He inched the car closer until the sensor detected it and opened the door, allowing the car to enter a smaller parking area containing two other cars, one of them Rose recognized as the one she’d been in on their last date.
“Do you live here?” She asked, taken aback.
“Yes,” he smiled nervously. “This is my private parking.”
“I can see that,” she frowned. “I thought you lived with your family, at the palace.”
“You and everyone else in the world,” he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“You don’t?”
He unbuckled his seat belt, and pocketed his key before turning towards her. “I come from a not so traditional family, but I need my own space despite the responsibilities that are expected of me. I’m a man in my twenties who values his privacy so I moved out when I was nineteen. Under a fake name.”
She was shocked by the revelation, even more by the fact that he was trusting her with his information.
“Nobody knows you live here?”
“I mean, the other residents do, but they’re under contract.”
“And your family?”
“Of course they know where I live,” he chuckled. “They just don’t come here. They don’t want to risk being seen here because they respect my space, they want to make sure I have all the privacy I can get away from the public eye, because, well, one day I won’t have that luxury.”
Rose deflated at the reminder of what his future entailed. “Do you ever think about it? Being heir and all?”
Harry looked down at his lap, picking an invisible thread on his pants. “Let’s go inside,” he said at last.
Taking the hint, Rose smiled and opened her door, Harry doing the same. He scanned a card inside the elevator and keyed in a code on the keypad. The lift immediately started rising, only halting when it reached the final floor of the building.
Nothing could have prepared Rose for the extravagance that would welcome her as soon as the doors opened. An entire wall was made up of giant windows, overlooking the bustling city underneath. They were so high up, she couldn't hear any of it. Instead, the height provided a peaceful silence in an otherwise busy area. The flooring was marble, the luxury kind one would only see on TV, and the place was spotless.
Harry’s warm hand on the small of her back urged her to walk inside, the elevator doors closing behind them. She took in the open concept penthouse, a staircase in the corner of the grand living room leading to what she assumed was his private corner, the bedroom and bath.
“Holy shit,” she breathed.
Harry laughed behind her, before grabbing her hand and leading her to the kitchen she knew even Gordon Ramsay would drool over. “Would you like something to drink?”
Snapping herself out of her dumfounded state, she looked at him. “What?”
He suppressed a smile and repeated, “Would you like something to drink?”
“Oh! Um, yes please,” she said, wringing her fingers together.
“Relax, Rose.”
“How could I?” She asked, eyes wide. “I feel like I’ll break something just by looking at it!”
“That’s fine, love. I want you to be comfortable.”
“But this place—”
“Is my home,” he interrupted, stepping closer and gently grabbing her shoulders. “And I made the choice to trust you with my secret, so please, make yourself comfortable.”
Her eyes softened. “You’re right, I’m sorry.”
“Nothing to be sorry about.”He leaned forward to capture her lips with his, and she melted into him without hesitation. She’d been wanting to do this since their first kiss and the wait was definitely worth it.
He pulled back with a grin, leaving her breathless. “So, drink?”
She nodded, exhaling as an attempt to calm her beating heart.
“I also made us dinner, I just need to put it in the oven.”
The statement made her heart swell, a feeling of fondness for the man in front of her taking over. “You didn’t have to.”
“I wanted to,” he smiled, as he pushed a few buttons on the oven until a yellow light started flashing and the desired temperature was displayed. “Can’t bring you here and not feed you.”
She chuckled and pulled out a stool tucked into the island to sit on. “No you can’t.”
***
The food would take an hour, so the two decided to go to his living room to wait. They were cuddled up on his couch, watching a movie she’d chosen and that he’d seen a dozen times. Rose didn’t know that though.
“Do you ever worry people will recognize you?” She asked, out of the blue. “When we went out together, you seemed unfazed by the looks some were giving you.”
He shrugged. “I get used to it, really. Besides, Fen is always around in case something happens.”
She pushed off the couch to look at him. “Fen?”
“My security detail,” he nodded. “He’s always around when I’m out and about.”
“But, I didn’t see him the other night. Or the first time we went out together.”
He grinned. “That means he’s doing his job.”
She frowned as she slowly tucked herself back into his side. His arm automatically wrapped around her. “So, we were being followed all night?”
“It’s for safety purposes, Rose. Plus, I would never intentionally put you in danger.”
“What could possibly be so dangerous?”
Harry ducked to press a kiss to her head, breathing in the shampoo scent that coated her red strands. “Anything could be dangerous, even the paparazzi.”
The thought of being followed by paparazzi sent shivers down her spine. She’d seen videos of celebrities being hounded by them and felt sorry for the public figures who had to live with that.
“What if they see us together. Would they publish photos? Are you scared of what they may think?”
“Are you ashamed of me, Rose?”
She craned her neck to kiss him softly. “I would never be ashamed of you, Your Highness.”
“I knew it!” He cried, dramatically pushing her away. “You’re just using me for my title!”
“How did you know?” She gasped, trying to hold in a smile.
“I’ve always felt something was off with you,” he tutted, leaning his back on the arm rest and pulling her on top of him.
She giggled, raising her hand to run her fingers through his hair before smoothing it down. “Why is that?” She whispered.
“There’s no way someone as beautiful as you would give me the time of day,” he murmured, brushing his lips on the corner of her mouth.
She pulled him in to give her a proper kiss, their legs tangling as he switched positions until he was hovering on top of her, forearms caging her head against the sofa.
“If anything, you’re out of my league, Prince.”
The words didn’t sit right with him. He pulled back. “Don’t ever say that,” he frowned.
“It’s true—“
He kissed her again. “Who I am... What I come from... Means nothing between you and me.”
She stared at him intently, the conversation taking an unexpected turn.
“Do you hear me?” He murmured, brushing his lips along her cheek.
She nodded.
He sighed. “Good.”
Rose gasped when Harry’s mouth was suddenly on hers, instantly brushing her tongue against his in what could be the best kiss she’d ever had. She wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him down to feel his comforting weight on top of her. The kiss morphed into something wetter as his hands trailed along her side and dipped under her shirt. She shivered from the contact, bending her knees to cage his body between her legs. Harry brushed his lips against her jaw before slowly making his way down her throat to the fabric of her top covering her chest. His hands inched along her skin to her back where he applied pressure, making her arch, chest pressing against his own.
“Harry,” she breathed as he pressed open mouthed kisses up her throat, leaving a wet trail.
He hummed in response before coming back up to connect their lips. She sighed into his mouth, arms wrapping around his neck as his hands trailed back to caress her sides. “Can I take this off?” He breathed, fingering the hem of her shirt.
She nodded against his neck, where she tongued at his skin, savouring the feeling of just being so close to him. He pulled her shirt up but before he could take it off completely, his phone rang, the shrill ringtone breaking through their bubble.
Harry scrambled to get off the couch, recognizing the ringtone, while Rose fought to catch her breath, mourning the feeling of his weight on her.
Harry excused himself and left the room to speak to whoever it was while Rose readjusted her top and sat up. She decided to braid her hair while waiting for him to finish.
Just as she was tying up her hair, she heard his footsteps before he appeared with a grim look on his face. He tossed his phone on the coffee table.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong,” he smiled but she didn’t buy it.
She tucked her legs under her and extended a hand towards him.
Harry accepted it and she tugged him over to sit next to her. He complied and slumped back, neck resting on the back of the couch.
“It’s just PR stuff. You don’t need to worry about it,” he said, eyes never leaving the ceiling.
She felt her heart sink to her stomach. “What kind of PR stuff?”
Before he could answer, she jumped at a sudden beeping coming from the kitchen.
He chuckled half-heartedly as she held a hand up to her chest. “It’s just the oven, love. Come on, food’s ready.”
“But what about—“
He kissed her. “I’m hungry.”
She pouted but decided to drop it, not wanting the mood to be ruined.
***
Rose placed her fork on her empty plate and got up to make her way to the sink. “How did you learn to cook like that?” She turned on the water and waited for it to turn hot before rinsing her plate. She reached for the sponge and squirted soap on it, intending to wash all the dishes.
Harry walked up behind her and slid a hand around her waist, splaying his hand on her stomach and pulling her back against him. “My mother,” he said before reaching over and turning off the water.
“Hey!” She went to turn it back on but he wrapped a hand around the tap, preventing her from moving it. “Harry…” She warned.
“Rose…”
She turned around and crossed her arms, ignoring the way her body reacted to his proximity.
He laughed, and pried the wet sponge out of her hand, then pushed her out of the way to rinse it and put it back in place.
Rose scowled. “Let me do this for you.”
“No, I have a dishwasher that could do that for me. I want to spend time with you, not watch you wash my shit.”
“You do so much for me, Harry. Let me wash your shit.”
“I can wash my own shit.”
“Okay, this is getting gross.”
Harry giggled and kissed her cheek before walking over to his fridge. She took the time to wash her hands and dry them before turning around to ask if he needed help with whatever it was he was doing.
She was met with the sight of him standing next to the kitchen island, a delicious-looking chocolate cake on it with two small forks.
Harry chuckled at the way her eyes lit up, knowing her love for chocolate was the way to her heart.
“I was too shy to ask if you had something sweet to follow up with dinner,” she admitted sheepishly, biting her bottom lip as she sat on the stool while he did the same across from her.
His smile widened, handing her a fork. “I would never forget.”
She blushed and followed his lead by taking the first bite of the cake. “Oh my God,” she moaned. “Is this André’s?”
Harry looked at her, horrified. “Don’t ever say another man’s name after moaning like that.”
She snorted, taking another bite of the delicious cake.
“Yes,” Harry said finally, expression morphing into one of amusement as he watched her devour her half of the dessert. “He did make it. Something about giving the lovely lady a real treat.”
Rose laughed at the way he mocked André’s accent, and pushed the plate towards him to finish the cake. “I can’t take another bite,” she groaned.
***
Rose awoke to the sound of faint chattering. She didn’t remember when she fell asleep but once she was aware enough to take in her surroundings, she realized she was still in Harry’s penthouse, curled up on his couch under a warm blanket. A warm feeling engulfed her when she realized Harry had tucked her in.
“Fuck you, I can do whatever I want.”
She frowned, knuckling her eye to try and wake herself up as she heard Harry start pacing, wherever he was.
“I know, I know, she’s been telling me the same thing all week.”
“Harry?” She called out. He didn’t hear her.
“If I hear you call her that one more time, you’re fired.”
“Harry,” she called again, louder. His pacing stopped and a second later, he appeared from around the corner, phone up to his ear.
“Rose,” he sighed, then scowled at whatever the person on the other end said. “Yes, now don’t call me back.” He locked his phone and gave her his attention once again. “Sorry about that.”
She smiled sleepily and reached over to caress his face. He breathed out and knelt on the ground to come face to face with her. Her fingers wound in the short hairs at the nape of his neck and he exhaled, dropping his forehead to her collarbone. “Sometimes I hate being me.”
“Want to talk about it?”
He shook his head and a laugh bubbled out of her, unwillingly. He snapped his head up. “What’s so funny?”
“Tickled me,” she mumbled.
He snorted then got up, asking her to move over before laying down next to her and pulling her to his side.
“You seemed angry,” she said gently.
She could feel him tense under her. “My mother was just pissed at me, had my publicist relay a message.”
“Did you do anything?”
Harry looked into her warm brown eyes, his own glinting with mischief. “When am I not?”
Rose giggled and laid her head on his shoulder. She could feel herself being pulled back into unconsciousness, and as much as she tried to fight it, she couldn't. She wanted to stay awake for him, to comfort him further but exhaustion suddenly washed over her. Before being completely lost to the world, she could’ve sworn she heard him murmur, “I won’t let anything come between us.”

Purchase of additional F-35A fighters by South Korea can kill the CVX program
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 07/07/2022 - 16:00 in Military
As previously reported, the plan of the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) to acquire additional F-35As, which had been postponed due to the priority given to the South Korean aircraft carrier program or CVX, gained strength under the new administration.
The Administration of the Defense Acquisition Program (DAPA) said on June 29 that it approved preliminary plans for the purchase on the 9th of the same month. Some are saying that the change raises doubts about the future of the CVX program.
If confirmed, the plan will see ROKAF invest about US$ 3 billion to acquire an additional 20 F-35As from 2023 to 2020. DAPA is expected to finalize the decision later this month. The new development comes four years after ROKAF first proposed the plan in 2018. The plans were overturned at the time due to the focus on buying F-35Bs for the CVX.

"The decisions taken in the subcommittee need to be approved by the Defense Acquisition Program Promotion Committee. Therefore, we cannot confirm that the plan will continue at this time," said the DAPA statement.
Despite this, the decision is still a major blow to the CVX program, given the history of competition between it and the F-35A program.
"We will follow the decisions taken by the Defense Acquisition Program Promotion Committee in the future regarding the purchase of additional F-35s. While DAPA is re-examining the decisions taken by the National Assembly last year, the CVX program is progressing as planned from now on," said the South Korean Ministry of Defense.
Several important members of the Yoon administration, including the Minister of National Defense, expressed reservations about the aircraft carrier program. Experts say that the new government's emphasis on combating North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities contributed to the decision to approve ROKAF's plan.

The South Korean military strategy requires a preventive attack on major nuclear and missile facilities if an attack by North Korea becomes apparent. Nicknamed the Kill Chain doctrine, the success of this strategy depends on the deployment of advanced fighters.
Another factor is ROKAF's large fleet of obsolete fighter jets. The force will be 30 to 70 fuselages less than the required number of combat aircraft, even if the KF-21 program continues as planned, since several F-4s and F-5s are retired in the period from 2025 to 2031.

hey elle! i saw your answers for the questions i sent—i love coffee and cookie dough ice cream too! i’ve found that i like a lot of coffee-flavored stuff like ice cream, cake, and candy lol. i also really love cookies and cream! i’d say that’d be my favorite with coffee and cookie dough being VERY CLOSE seconds
BABY DON’T STOP IS ICONIC WHEW but may i propose....haikyuu boys dancing to it.......
anyways today i’ve got some headcanons for a past written on the margins question! first it was a karaoke party with the seijoh 4, and now it’s a road trip! aka you and iwaizumi are the only ones with any braincells in this godforsaken car (they make you handle the gps stuff since you’re the best with it). i can imagine each of them rotating and driving for a set number of hours or at least until they reach a rest stop, especially on long trips. whoever’s sitting shotgun (they rotate between this seat too) has control over the radio and aux cord and oikawa jokes that it’s the best part of going on road trips (but is he really joking though...)
makki and mattsun pretend to groan when you sit shotgun, but in actuality they don’t mind and will probably sing along to some of the songs you play (if there’s a rap part in the song currently playing everyone makes mattsun rap along i feel like his voice just fits it) while oikawa would be like UGH FINALLY SOMEONE WITH SOME MUSIC TASTE just to get a rise out of the other boys (but he really does think those kpop songs you blast lowkey slap he’s been listening to some of them while he works out or goes on his morning runs). iwa generally doesn’t have much of a preference but i can see him being partial to more upbeat songs to keep him or whoever’s driving awake, but even during slow songs the rest of you guys sing loud enough and chaotic enough to prevent anyone from getting any shut-eye (oikawa, makki, and mattsun dramatically act out a whole SAGA)
when you guys reach any rest stop makki is the first one out of the car and he makes a beeline towards the bathroom because he drank a lot of water during you guys’ impromptu karaoke session (gotta keep those vocal chords taken care of!). oikawa and mattsun are usually the ones in charge of getting snacks, they always end up getting a lot but they make sure to get everyone’s favorites! the amount of snacks they buy seems overkill but they’re athletic boys with voracious appetites and getting this many snacks ensures that the car is never short on food. if this is during or post-timeskip iwa is probably a little more strict on the snacks everyone eats (especially with regards to oikawa, being a professional athlete and all) but eventually decides to let up a bit—it’s not everyday he gets to go on a trip with his close friends, plus all those calories are gonna get burned right away once you guys reach your destination and go from place to place.
god help anyone who actually falls asleep in the car because oikawa and makki are taking photos of whoever’s sleeping with their phones AND with the polarioid camera you brought. despite this, though, everyone makes a conscious effort to be quieter when someone’s napping, and the volume of the radio is turned a bit lower. one of your favorite pictures on your phone is a selfie you took of everyone while you were sitting in the passenger seat: mattsun was driving at the time and though he wasn’t looking at the camera, a smile is on his face as he makes a peace sign with one hand; oikawa, iwa, and makki are sleeping in the back seats with oikawa and makki leaning on iwa’s shoulders (he lost a few rounds of rock paper scissors and had to sit in the middle). this also extends to when you’re asleep in the car as well—oikawa jokingly made his phone background a selfie of you leaning on his shoulder while napping (featuring a blurry iwaizumi at the side) but he actually finds it quite cute and doesn’t want to change it to his usually background quite yet.
it’s evening when you guys finally reach your hotel and everyone’s a bit tired from being cooped up in the car all day but surprisingly enough no one’s really sleepy because everyone at one point had the opportunity to nap on the way there. if you’re dating one of the boys the others DEFINITELY make you two take one room while the other three take the room adjacent to it. after everyone’s gotten ready for bed you’re all gathered in one of the hotel rolls just vibing on your phones and you and oikawa decide it’s the perfect time to bring out The Sheet Masks™️ that you kept in the cooler in the car during the trip so they’d remain cold. many more goofy photos of everyone with the masks on their faces are taken.
by this point it’s late at night and eventually you guys fall into having some nice, genuine heart-to-heart conversations. if this is during or post-timeskip everyone’s sharing what they’ve been up to ever since graduation or ever since you guys last saw/talked to each other. it’s just such a nice and comforting environment to be in because everyone’s a little tired from the day’s events and so it’s not as loud and boisterous, but at the same time this tiredness and it being nighttime means everyone’s filters are a little looser than usual and you could ask for advice on just about anything and everyone else would chime in with both lighthearted and actual suggestions. the boys are just SOFTER during this time like you could bring up how you’ve been getting back into something you did during high school (like playing piano or guitar or something) and they’d want you to show them videos or pictures of what you’ve been up to! maybe one boy brings up something that’s been worrying them for a while and you and the others are giving him words of encouragement while also cracking jokes. it’s just really chill and nice and everyone likes these late night talks because they bring you all a little closer.
everyone ends up sleeping in the same hotel room. you wake up sandwiched between oikawa and mattsun (oikawa’s got an arm thrown around you and mattsun’s long leggies are literally on top of yours and you wonder how you managed to sleep soundly last night) and iwa and makki are on the pull out sofa bed and you’re like Hey Guys. What The Heck (makki takes this opportunity to snap a photo of the three of you wrapped up in the bedcovers) and when you guys go to get breakfast at the hotel buffet it’s strangely quiet because almost everyone is still sleepy lol.
after getting some food in your system and getting ready for the day you’re all back to your usual energetic selves! you snap a mirror selfie of everyone gathered around the sink in one of the hotel rooms because oikawa was finishing getting ready (he takes the longest i just know it) and the other boys were just hanging around him talking about what’s planned for the day. the schedule you guys have isn’t super specific but there’s a few choice locations that you guys looked into in advance and try to visit no matter what! a day out with them is definitely filled with photos. you’ve got a lot of them in which they’re trying to recreate some funny pose in a picture oikawa saw online (like the one of nct in the ask i sent you earlier!!) and they either turn out really great or really horrible (funny) because you have a knack for taking photos where everything looks normal but someone’s face would be really blurry. but they would also try and take some really nice photos too—they’ll all even help you if you want to take some solo shots! oikawa and makki know the best angles for aesthetically pleasing photos, mattsun has a knack for taking panorama photos that look perfect, and iwaizumi’s really good at taking those types of photos of you guys jumping in the air without them looking weird. you’ve basically got four tall hypemen it’s great!!
overall i think it’d be so fun to go on a trip with them because it’s the perfect balance!! they’re chaotic clowns but they also won’t hesitate to give you a piggyback ride if your feet really hurt or if your shoes are giving you blisters (oikawa will try and make iwa give him a piggyback ride too, though). you guys end up getting a lot closer and having a TON of photos and inside jokes at the end of the trip, and though you’re all reluctant to go back, you also all know that this is only the beginning of a lot more outings together! if you take little clips of various events throughout the trip and compile them all together into a little vlog they’ll all probably watch it together through zoom or discord screenshare or something loool
THIS IS SO LONG take a shot (of water) every time i say one of the guys’ names or if i say “everyone” or some variation of it FJDJSNS seijoh 4 brainrot things am i right.....i hope you enjoyed reading this as much as i enjoyed writing and thinking of this! i think in the future i might think of stuff for if you go on a trip with the miya twins (and maybe suna too?).....hmmm hmmm hmmm!!! —🌸
— from elle ! i love this so so much >_< like literally what do i have to do to go on a road trip with the seijoh four??? it would be so much fun and chaotic and i want that for me,, i love them and their friendship so much it's insane ;-; anyways, thoughts + additions under the cut <33 thank you for this !!
everyone who isn't driving makes it their mission to annoy the one who is; whether it's through repeatedly poking their cheek, asking how long of the drive they have left, etc. the person who can last the longest in driver's seat would probably be iwaizumi, all his years playing volleyball with them as prepared him for this moment — but also looked up breathing exercises to avoid getting angry.
the best person to have riding shotgun would most be mattsun, especially when it's really late or super early ; keeps the conversation going and doesn't fall asleep, even when everyone in the backseat is. he shotguns energy drinks every hour or so.
i love the idea of oikawa, makki, and mattsun acting out a whole saga in the backseat omg !! in my head it's a song like taylor swift's love story wherein makki is the love interest, oikawa is taylor, and mattsun is like the dad who doesn't want them together. they really go all out on the acting — oikawa might have let out a couple of tears — and even iwa cracks a lil smile from the driver's seat.
awe timeskip!iwa watching out for everyone's diets ;-; but i do agree that he's gonna let up a bit considering that everyone doesn't see each other all the time. but i feel like he gives everyone the look™ every now and then despite this.
aw cmon don't hit me with oikawa making his background me leaning on his shoulder as i sleep that's so adorable i might cry :<< but other photos taken during naps include : iwa leaning on oikawa’s shoulder, makki sleeping with his eyes halfway-open ??? mattsun’s face covered in stickers that you impulse-bought at a random stopover.
sheet masks with the boys ??? yes pls !! though iwa would definitely be the type to almost wash his face after and oikawa screeched just before he was able to splash water on his face.
but late in the night heart to hearts ??? ugh, peak softness from the boys — everyone cries at some point because woah all of you really grew so much since high school and it made everyone feel all warm and tender.
but at some point, without thinking, and also bec it’s late and what does he have to lose, iwa just goes “you know, i had a crush on you when we were in high school” at yn and everyone just goes ?!?!?!?!?
yn : what the hell i had a crush on you ????
and oikawa’s just cackling in the background like, “i knew it !!!! both of you kept saying i was crazy for pushing it i feel so vindicated rn”
meanwhile makki hands mattsun some money because they bet on it years ago and they were finally getting answers — makki thought you would confess first and mattsun thought it would be iwa ; several years too late but at least ;//
also i would just love to fall asleep in between oikawa and mattsun,,, please how do i get that
also on mattsun’s panoramas: everyone likes moving around a lot when he takes those photos and it’s the perfect mix of weird and cool because yeah there are like five makki’s but one of them looks like he has a third arm and a triangular head
and the vlog and we all get to watch it together over discord ???? that’s it, that’s what i want ;-;
tldr; I would give anything to go on a road trip with the seijoh four ;((

I Thought We Were Brothers Ch. 1: Wish I Could Relive Every Single Word
Summary: Marvin and Chase have a lot of unspoken grievances between each other and neither of them know what to do about it.
A/N: For Marvin’s birthday. Chapter title from the song “Brother” by Kodaline.
Chapters: 1, 2
Marvin knew he should say something. Anything at this point was better than the growing chasm opening up between him and several of the Septics. J.J and Henrik were civil on a good day but Chase was a different matter.
It started way before time travelers came came back with grim news, or Marvin first voiced the want to train Chase’s daughter in magic. It began with Robbie.
Sweet, innocent Robbie.
Marvin would never apologize or regret raising the young teen from the dead. He couldn’t.
The magician had looked the young man’s mother dead in the eyes and swore that he’d protect Robbie. Had sworn on his magic and own soul that he would do everything in his power to always bring him back to her alive. And Marvin had done just that, he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he hadn’t tried.
But that night had left Marvin and Chase on unspoken bad terms. Chase ceased trusting Marvin, had started drinking again, and then cleaned himself up a couple months after. The atmosphere, forever spoiled.
After the incident with the Suits, Marvin had ceased trusting Chase as well. Chase now had a part of Clubs forever buried in his soul, and it showed in little ways. His beard was getting trimmed instead of him just allowing it to go wild until he shaved it back. He’d gotten a gun, a real one, and was hiding it in his room in the base. None of the heroes tried to talk about it, but many of them knew it was there. The marksman sometimes made especially barbed jabs at Marvin when he was tired or too exhausted to keep his filter up. Then there was the matter of Dark.
Marvin had seen the look in Chase’s eyes whenever Damien was on the news. Chase was especially anxious whenever Marvin got near any of Dark’s kids. Even if those kids were King and Host. Dark was more willing to hold long conversations with Chase, and Chase had been caught by Marvin on more than one occasion texting Dark.
There was something growing between Dark and Chase and everyone was too busy walking on eggshells to confront either party about it.
Well Marvin was sick of watching his friend group tear itself apart. He needed to talk to Chase, before the guy did something stupid.
Marvin walked into the comms room. Chase was in there with Tommy and King.
“This job always as borin’[1] as shit?” Tommy asked.
King chuckled, “Yeah but so long as you’re listening to the feed you can be on your phone or work on stuff. Logan and Bing once built a transforming roomba from the ground up during a couple comms sessions. It’s why Logan likes to be in here, he gets his little side projects done.”
While King and Tommy were talking, Chase immediately noticed that Marvin had opened the door and was just staring at him.
“Hey Chase, can we talk?” Marvin asked.
“Logic, takin’[2] a smoke back,” Chase scoffed into the microphone and stood up, “King, yeh[3] have seniority, call us if anythin’[4] happens.”
“Yes, finally!” King smiled in joy and threw his arms up as Tommy groaned in annoyance, flopping back in his chair and rolling his eyes. “I got it!”
Without a word, Chase stepped out and quietly motioned for Marvin to follow him and took him out to the little smoking area. There Chase lit up a cigarette and took a deep lungful of nicotine laced smoke, before even acknowledging Marvin’s presence, “What do yeh[3] want?”
“I wanna talk,” Marvin reminded. “Why do yeh[3] think I followed yeh[3] out here yeh[3] bollocks[5]?”
Chase took a seat, “Fine, what yeh wanna go on about?”[6]
“Look, I know we don’t usually talk, but we need ta[7] talk about somethin’[8],” Marvin told him.
The marksman gave an amused chuckle, “Nah, we don’t have anythin’ ta talk about. Just go back ta yer books Marv.”[9]
“Yeh[3] hate me, so we got shite[10] ta[7] talk about,” Marvin told him.
“You murdered Stacy an’[11] the kids, ‘a[12] course I fookin’[13] hate yeh[3]!” Chase ripped the cigarette out of his mouth and stomped towards him.
Marvin flinched and Chase pulled away, “An’ sure yeh didn’t this time, but yeh did the other times, yeh did before they came back. Yeh set an entire city on fire, killed hundreds ‘a people. What am I supposed ta say ta yeh?”[14]
“I know,” Marvin called back, terror in his voice. “I know an’ don’t know what the fook was wrong with me ta brin’ me ta that point. That is hundreds ‘a thousands ‘a people who did nothin’ ta deserve the horror ‘a fookin’ burnin’ ta death!”[15]
“I don’t remember what was wrong with yeh[3],” Chase shot back, still angry. “I got stuck with that fooker’s[16] feelings, not his memories.”
The two of them fell quiet, the air nasty and injured between them.
Marvin felt like poison was bubbling in this throat. “The fook[17] happened ta[7] us?”
“Yer gonna have ta be specific,”[18] Chase asked curtly.
“I wanted ta[7] learn magic an’[11] hunt ghosts,” Marvin raked his hands down his face. “I didn’t want ta[7] save the world an’[11] deal with the fact I fooked[19] the future so bad it had ta[7] be fixed.”
“Yeah,” Chase frowned, before his phone went off. Chase pulled it out to see a text had shown up. It was Mori, in the water, near some tunnels with a fish in his mouth, the photo taken from the shoreline which meant Memento or Tempus had probably taken the picture.
The picture got a tiny breathy laugh from Chase, and a small smile. His kids seemed to be having fun, they didn’t seem to be getting into some big trouble. Yet, at least.
“They usually text yeh[3]?” Marvin asked, trying to make his tone sound less hostile.
“Yeah,” Chase’s expression turned bittersweet, he started texting Dark with an update. “Helps ta have a second pair ‘a eyes on ‘em. They tend ta slip out ‘a the Manor or the warehouses when Dark’s not watchin’. An’ that’s on a day when Wil doesn’t just sweep ‘em away an’ cause trouble with ‘em.”[20]
“Why are yeh in charge ‘a watchin’ ‘em?”[21] Marvin asked, completely confused. “Can’t those two just rise an’[11] repeat what they did with the other six? I mean if yeh[3] can handle raising six fookin’[13] demons in secret, three seem like no big deal.”
Chase paused, his fingers still. They were going to figure it out eventually. King already knew, he’d confided that in Chase already. “Cause[22] they’re mine, Marv.”
Marvin spent the next minute trying to figure out if Chase was joking, and then another minute trying to figure out how that was possible since they were demons and Chase was still human.
But a nagging feeling tickled the back of his head: was he still human?
Logan and the other Sides had been demons since the first moment he had met them and no one had been the wiser. Not even the Sides, and Marvin should have known. He should have taken one look at Virgil and more importantly Remus and known. Chase could be a demon, he could not know, and fly under every kind of test and radar known to magic itself. Hell, Patton and Roman still came up as humans for those tests.
“Do— Does uh,” Marvin floundered for an adequate response, because what the hell was he supposed to say to that! “Does Dark know?”
“Yeah, he’s the one who told me,” Chase was moving his cigarette back up to his lips. “Don’t know if he told the rest ‘a[12] his kids but they all know too. King said as much.”
“So what now?” Marvin asked.
Chase let out an ugly, contemptuous snort, “What about now?”
“Dark’s got yer[23] kids, is there another custody battle comin’[24] up?” Marvin winced at the memory of Chase’s last custody battle, one he had lost handedly.
“They’re Dark’s kids, he’s the most powerful bein’[25] in all Egoton, there’s nothin’[26] ta[7] fight against, Marv,” Chase dismissed, rolling his cigarette around in his mouth.
“Chase, no yeh can’t just roll o’er an’ just—”[27] Marvin spat.
“Calm yer[23] fookin’[13] tits, Marv,” Chase scoffed. “Dark an’[11] I have somethin’[8] set up. I see ‘em[28] more than I see my human kids.”
Marvin shoved his hands in his pockets, not sure what to do with them. “Okay, that’s good at least. So did yeh an’ Dark talk about stuff then. I know that the Clubs version ‘a yeh was with him in the future.”[29]
“I don’t have a future with Dark anymore,” Chase snarled. “He’s with Wil.”
“Wil cheats on him with practically the entire town,” Marvin reminded.
“I know!” Chase slammed his fist on the bench before raking his fingers down his face. “Yeh[3] think I haven’t noticed that bubblegum bastard perched on his arm, being the fookin’[13] shittiest arsehole[30] in the whole fookin’[13] world?”
Marvin opened his mouth but Chase turned and started on a tirade, “Dark is loyal ta[7] him. He fookin’[13] raised those kids almost by himself. An’[11] what does he get in return? The fooker[31] rips his heart out an’[11] leaves. It pisses me off.”
“I thought they said Wil died?” Marvin asked and all the momentum bled out of Chase’s system.
“Yeah he did,” Chase corrected himself. “Fook![17] I did it again.”
“Did what again?” Marvin asked.
“I say weird thin’s[32], I do weird thin’s[32],” Chase dismissed. “Yesterday I made like three different coffees, one fer me, one fer Eef, an’ another fer Dark. Crank wasn’t e’en in that day, an’ why the hell should I be makin’ a fookin’ coffee fer Dark? I was in the base.”[33]
“Wasn’t future yeh datin’ him or fookin’ him or somethin’?” Marvin asked.
“I think he was gonna[34] propose,” Chase admitted.
Marvin just stared at Chase, “What? How do yeh[3] know?”
“I caught myself lookin’[35] at rings,” Chase admitted. “Tryin’ ta find somethin’ that looks nice with red an’ blue. Not that it’s ‘a any use now.”[36]
“How much do yeh[3] remember or feel?” Marvin asked, coming closer and taking a seat next to Chase.
“I don’t have memories, just his feelin’s[37],” Chase frowned in thought. “Frustration, anger, love. Future me was so smitten with Dark that I know he was killin’ fer him. The weight ‘a my guns feel off now. Whene’er I look at Mori an’ Memento I feel so upset ‘cause they’re with Wil an’ they’re so big an’ it eats at me. Wilford fookin’ stole my kids an’ changed ‘em, an’ I’m supposed ta stand by an’ watch his aura keep changin’ ‘em.”[38]
“Have yeh tried talkin’ ta Dark about this?”[39] Marvin questioned.
“An’[11] tell him what?” Chase demanded. “That I fookin’[13] hate his guts an’[11] I wanna[40] take him out on a date ta[7] this nice curry place I saw on my last patrol at the same time. That I think his boyfriend is awful fer[41] him an’[11] I wanna[40] put a hollow point right between his fookin’[13] eyes?”
Marvin was trying to find some way to comfort or calm Chase down as he kept rambling. “Yah know maybe I should march my arse o’er ta his office an’ tell him that I hate wakin’ up in the morning. That when I wake up, I can’t stand it when my bed is fookin’ empty. That someone is supposed ta be in my bed with me an’ I just lay there fer hours ‘cause I can’t leave until he knows I’m there.”[42]
“Yeah, Marv, Dark would love that,” Chase laughed sadly. “Big, powerful mob boss would love some sad alcoholic who can barely hold himself together long enough ta[7] get out ‘a[12] bed in the mornin’[43]. That’ll really get his attention.”
“Well he must’a liked somethin’ ‘cause he was datin’ yeh,”[44] Marvin tried to offer.
“Wil was dead,” Chase reminded. “He’s alive an’ kickin’ now. Dark’s not gonna e’en look my way if Wil’s alive.”[45]
Marvin and Chase went quiet again. Unsure how to help either of them.
Fortunately for Marvin, he didn’t have to. King called them both back in. City hall wanted Average, Marvin, and Jackie to come in for a meeting.
Marvin saw the tense look in Chase’s eyes but he agreed and the two of them set off to meet Jackie at City Hall.

I'm Kiyoomi Sakusa and I'm a germaphobe - Chapter 32: A new heart beats
Tumblr media
Words: 1.698 Warning: angst, mention of blood, manga spoiler
Chapter 31 -  The beginning of the picture book     | Masterlist
(y/n) = your name | (l/n) = last name | (e/c) = eye colour | (h/c) = hair colour
“(y/n)!” he screams and runs quickly towards his love. Full of fear, he holds her in his arms and feels the blood on his hands as he holds her to the waist. “A doctor! We need a doctor!” he shouts as loudly as he can and presses (y/n) firmly, with tears in his eyes in his arms. Only now does he see a man with a gun and shaky hands standing in front of him, who is pushed to the ground by several passers-by. “This is how it feels to lose a loved one! She killed my wife and left my son and me behind!” The man roars with a furious voice. This is the husband of her first deceased patient... But he doesn’t waste another second on this man. Because he looks down at his wife, crying. “(y/n)...” There’s a dull, sad voice in her ears. It’s the one from Kiyoomi. She wants to open her eyes, move her mouth and tell him everything will be fine. But she won’t make it. She feels his warm body on hers. He warms her, because she is getting colder and colder. Her fingertips begin to tingle, and she notices how a numbness prevents her from reaching for Kiyoomis hand. She’s so cold... She’s tired... and she’s having a hard time breathing. “(y/n) my love... Open your eyes, please. Stay with me! Stay with us!” she hears the sobbing voice of her husband. Kiyoomi... Wakami, who heard the shot, comes out of the hospital with Kaede at a fast pace and runs towards Kiyoomi and (y/n). When Kaede sees his sister and all the blood on the floor, he gets sick. But he pulls himself together and wants to treat her as quickly as possible in order to save her and with good luck also the baby. “Kiyoomi! Give me (y/n) quickly! I have to get her into surgery!” Kaede calls to him and bends down to Kiyoomi. He takes (y/n) from his hands and promises to save them both. Quickly he rushes back to the hospital with Wakami and only Kiyoomi, mourning on the ground, remains. The man who shot (y/n) is still being held on the ground by the people and is being taken away by the police after only a short time. Kiyoomi, who remains on the spot for more than half an hour, now stands up to pick up the photos that (y/n) has dropped and put it in his pocket. If she hadn’t come here today... None of this would have happened. With shaky legs he goes to the hospital. He doesn’t care if he gets sick, he just wants to feel his beloved wife and their child in his arms. He would accept any virus, any disease. He just wants his family and future back. In front of the operating rooms, he sits down on a chair and looks down on his cell phone. On the phone is a photo of him and (y/n) cutting the first piece of the wedding cake together. Tears flow down his cheeks at the thought that he might never see her smile like that again. “(y/n) please... Kaede... Please don’t let her die...” He sobs bitterly and beats his cell phone against his forehead. The memory of the pregnancy comes to him. . “I’m home again!” In the evening, Kiyoomi calls into the house while he takes off his shoes and goes into the living room. But there’s no one in the living room. “I’m in the kitchen!” (y/n)’s warm voice sounds and Kiyoomi follows her voice with a smile. She’s about to cut the vegetables for a vegetable pan. “Hello my princess.” He greets her affectionately as he hugs her from behind and gives her a kiss on the hairline. “You’re home early today. Don’t you do extra training?” She asks a little surprised, otherwise he comes from training only after eight o'clock. “Our coach has his wedding day today and therefore finished the training earlier. Does it bother you that I’m here? Should I go again?” he asks quietly and distributes several kisses on her cheek. “No, I’m glad you’re here. Can you maybe take out the garbage and put some cutlery and dishes on the table? After all, I’m almost done with the vegetable pan and then we can eat right away.”, “Of course.” , he answers her quickly and gives her one last kiss on the cheek before he sets the table and ties up the garbage and takes it outside. But just before he throws the garbage into the trash can, a small object catches his eye. First Kiyoomi thinks (y/n) threw away a thermometer. But when you look closer, it’s something completely different that’s in the trash can. “Is this a pregnancy test?” he mumbles to himself. Still in disbelief, he opens the garbage bag and takes out the little test. Anyway he definitely has to wash his hands later. Clearing his throat he looks at the small plastic part. His hands are shaking and his pulse is up. Nervousness is strangely spreading in him. Two strips... “Great... What do two stripes mean...? Twins? Not pregnant? Pregnant?” he mumbles to himself again. He quickly throws away the garbage and goes into the house with the test. (y/n) has already put the food on the table and is just getting a bottle of water from the kitchen when she looks at Kiyoomi with two big question marks in his eyes. “Kiyoomi? Is everything all right?” she asks him concerned. “What... What does that mean?” The words come out of him quietly. “Kiyoomi... where... ah... this was supposed to be a surprise today...” she replied sulking. “This is a pregnancy test...” she continues. “I can see that myself. But what does that mean? Are we going to be parents? Are you... Are you really pregnant?” he still asks her in disbelief. Only a few months ago they had talked about how nice it would be if they had children. He was aware that his training and membership in the Japanese national team would not always allow him to be there, even if he would no longer play as a regular player. But he still wanted to be as good as possible for his wife and children. Experience their first words, first steps, first teeth and much more. He wanted to be there. To be a good father. And he was sure that with (y/n) at his side, he would definitely be a good father. That despite his absence, which would certainly come, they would make a wonderful family. Nodding, (y/n) looks at him. “Yeah... I... I’ve run several tests. They were all positive. We are going to have a baby.” She answers him joyfully but also somewhat unsettled. A baby... They’re actually having a baby... “(y/n)... we’re having a baby! We... We’re going to be parents... “ He mumbles joyfully to himself and does not notice how tears of joy come out of him and look down the path along his cheeks. (y/n) just wants to take a step on him but Kiyoomi is faster. Full of anticipation, he takes (y/n) firmly in his arms and starts to cry. “Kiyoomi... I can’t breathe.” He hears her voice, because her head is on his upper body. Apologetically, he leaves her alone and still looks at her stunned. “Do you want to be with the ultrasound next week? I had put it on your day off so that you can decide whether you want to come along or n-” She doesn’t manage to finish her sentence, because Kiyoomi interrupts her immediately. “Yes! Yes, I want to be there.” He answers her enthusiastically and takes her hands in his. He lovingly lifts her up to give her a few kisses. “We’re having a baby.” he whispers over and over again. “Come on, let’s eat first. Otherwise, the food will get cold. After that, we can talk about everything.” (y/n) chuckles joyfully and gives Kiyoomi a loving kiss. The day before the ultrasound, Kiyoomi couldn’t sleep at all. He was way too nervous. He moved back and forth in bed all the time and when they were finally there and the gynecologist started the examination, he ran up and down in the room completely nervous. “My good Sir... Please relax a bit. Sit next to your wife. Take a look at the monitor.” The doctor tries to calm him down. Even (y/n) tries to get him down somehow, but he’s just too nervous. “Yes... yes, yes.” he answers hastily and sits down like a clumsy toddler on the chair next to the lounger. But when he then looks at the monitor and for the first time hears the beating heart of their child and also sees how it moves, every nervousness falls away from him. Unconsciously, he reaches for (y/n)’s hand and presses it firmly, while he cannot let his eyes off the monitor. With the pressure on her hand, she looks down at Kiyoomi and puts her free hand on his. Through the touch, he leaves the monitor and looks at (y/n). “There... There’s our baby. Do you hear the heartbeats? It... It’s all real. That is really true. We are having a baby.” Loaded with joy, his eyes are filled with tears. He never thought he could ever become so emotional. He doesn’t usually cry. But now he can’t hold back his tears. Warmly he tilts his head down and looks at (y/n)’s belly. “I will protect you and Mom with everything I have. You two are my world. My queen and my princess or my prince.” He whispers to the belly and presses (y/n)’s hand firmly. - “Kiyoomi!” the voice of Osamu and those of his teammates gets him out of his thoughts.

Warp-speed spending and other surreal stats of COVID times (AP) The U.S. effort in World War II was off the charts. Battles spread over three continents and four years, 16 million served in uniform and the government shoved levers of the economy full force into defeating Nazi Germany and imperial Japan. All of that was cheaper for American taxpayers than this pandemic. The $1,400 federal payments going into millions of people’s bank accounts are but one slice of a nearly $2 trillion relief package made law this past week. With that, the United States has spent or committed to spend nearly $6 trillion to crush the coronavirus, recover economically and take a bite out of child poverty. Set in motion over one year, that’s warp-speed spending in a capital known for gridlock, ugly argument and now an episode of violent insurrection. Once, the attack on Pearl Harbor was the modern marker for national trauma. About 2,400 Americans died in the assault on the naval base in Hawaii that drew the United States into the Pacific war. The nearly 3,000 dead from the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, became the new point of comparison as the ravages of COVID-19 grew. The U.S. reached a total of 3,000 COVID-19 deaths even before March 2020 was out. By December, the country was experiencing the toll of 9/11 day after day after day. With deaths now moderating—so that a 9/11 toll comes cumulatively every few days—the U.S. death toll now has surpassed 530,000, exceeding U.S. combat deaths of all of the last century’s wars.
The Fighter Jet That’s Too Pricey to Fail (NYT) Last week, the new head of the House Armed Services Committee, Representative Adam Smith, said in an interview that the F-35 fighter jet was a “rathole” draining money. He said the Pentagon should consider whether to “cut its losses.” That promptly set off another round of groaning about the most expensive weapon system ever built, and questions about whether it should—or could—be scrapped. Conceived in the 1990s as a sort of Swiss army knife of fighter jets, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter was meant to come as a conventional fighter for the Air Force, as a carrier-based fighter for the Navy and as a vertical-landing version for the Marines. The problems, and there were lots of them, set in early. All three versions of the plane ended up at least three years behind schedule, and sharing less than a quarter of their parts instead of the anticipated 70 percent. Many of those already built need updates; hundreds of defects are still being corrected; the jet is so expensive to maintain that it costs around $36,000 per hour to fly (compared to $22,000 for an older F-16). At the current rate, it will cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion over its 60-year life span. So, kill the monster and start looking for alternatives? Or declare it too big to fail and make the best of it? Last month, the Air Force chief of staff, Gen. Charles Brown Jr., gave his answer when he said that the F-35 should become the Ferrari of the fleet: “You only drive it on Sundays.”
Colorado and Wyoming brace for severe snowstorm and potential blizzard conditions this weekend (Washington Post) A major winter storm is set to unload massive amounts of snow, the most in years in some areas, in parts of Colorado, Wyoming and western Nebraska this weekend into early next week. Before the wintry onslaught is over, some locations in the Colorado foothills and eastern Rockies might end up with as much as four feet. Winds are also going to howl, bringing the potential for blizzard conditions across parts of the region. Gusts of 35 to 50 mph or higher will cause blowing and drifting snow, as well as compromised visibility and whiteout conditions. Winter storm warnings are in effect in Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins where the National Weather Service predicts 12 to 24 inches of snow. In Cheyenne, Wyo., also under a winter storm warning, 22 to 34 inches of snow is forecast.
Stay or go? Fence, Guard pose Capitol security questions (AP) Nobody, it seems, wants to keep the security fence around the U.S. Capitol anymore—except the police who fought off the horrific attack on Jan. 6. Lawmakers call the razor-topped fencing “ghastly,” too militarized and, with the armed National Guard troops still stationed at the Capitol since a pro-Trump mob laid siege, not at all representative of the world’s leading icon of democracy. “All you have to do is to see the fencing around the Capitol to be shocked,” Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., said in an interview Friday. How to protect lawmakers, while keeping the bucolic Capitol grounds open to visitors has emerged as one of the more daunting, wrenching questions from deadly riot. With warnings of another attack in early March by pro-Trump militants and threats on lawmakers that have nearly doubled since the start of 2021, the police, the Pentagon and lawmakers themselves are wrestling with how best to secure what has been a sprawling campus mostly open to visiting tourists and neighborhood dog walkers alike.
Bolivia arrests ex-leader in crackdown on opposition (AP) The conservative interim president who led Bolivia for a year was arrested Saturday as officials of the restored leftist government pursue those involved in the 2019 ouster of socialist leader Evo Morales, which they regard as a coup, and the administration that followed. Jeanine Áñez was detained in the early morning in her hometown of Trinidad and was flown to the capital, La Paz. She had earlier warned that officials were searching for her, terming it “abuse and persecution” in Twitter posts. The arrest of Áñez and warrants against numerous other former officials further worsened political tensions in a South American country already torn by a cascade of perceived wrongs suffered by both sides. Those include complaints that Morales had grown more authoritarian with nearly 13 years in office, that he illegally ran for a fourth reelection and then allegedly rigged the outcome, that right-wing forces led violent protests that prompted security forces to push him into resigning and then cracked down on his followers, who themselves protested the alleged coup. Dozens of people were killed in a series of demonstrations against and then for Morales.
British police officer charged with murder in missing woman’s kidnapping and killing (Washington Post) A British police officer was charged late Friday in the kidnapping and killing of Sarah Everard, whose disappearance and death has sent shock waves through the nation. Wayne Couzens, 48, who previously had posts at Downing Street and the Palace of Westminster, was charged with the kidnap and murder of Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive. She was last seen at 9:30 p.m. on March 3, walking home from a friend’s house in south London. Her disappearance sparked a national outcry in Britain over the harassment and abuse of women. The case has struck a chord with women across the country, with many demanding change. In the days after Everard’s disappearance, women have taken to social media to share their own experiences and fears about their personal safety and walking alone. Caitlin Moran, an author and journalist, tweeted: “Being a woman: my “outside” day finishes at sundown. If I haven’t taken the dog for a walk/jogged by then, I can’t.” Writing in the Guardian, columnist Gaby Hinsliff said: “When she went missing, any woman who has ever walked home alone at night felt that grim, instinctive sense of recognition. Footsteps on a dark street. Keys gripped between your fingers.”
Car bomb kills at least 7, injures 53 in Afghan Herat province (Reuters) A powerful car bomb near a police station on Friday night killed at least seven people and wounded more than 50 others in Afghanistan’s western Herat province, officials said. Herat Governor Sayed Abdul Wahid Qatali said that at least 53 people, including civilians and security forces, were hurt when a van packed with explosives went off in a crowded part of the city in the evening.
4 killed as Myanmar forces continue crackdown on protesters (AP) Security forces in Myanmar on Saturday again met protests against last month’s military takeover with lethal force, killing at least four people by shooting live ammunition at demonstrators. Three deaths were reported in Mandalay, the country’s second-biggest city, and one in Pyay, a town in south-central Myanmar. There were multiple reports on social media of the deaths, along with photos of dead and wounded people in both locations. The independent U.N. human rights expert for Myanmar, Tom Andrews, said Thursday that “credible reports” indicated security forces in the Southeast Asian nation had so far killed at least 70 people, and cited growing evidence of crimes against humanity since the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
For Syrians, a decade of displacement with no end in sight (AP) Mohammed Zakaria has lived in a plastic tent in eastern Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley for almost as long as war has raged in his native Syria. He and his family fled bombings in 2012, thinking it would be a short, temporary stay. His hometown of Homs was under siege, and subject to a ferocious Syrian military campaign. He didn’t even bring his ID with him. Almost 10 years later, the family still hasn’t gone back. The 53-year-old Zakaria is among millions of Syrians unlikely to return in the foreseeable future, even as they face deteriorating living conditions abroad. On top of his displacement, Zakaria now struggles to survive Lebanon’s financial meltdown and social implosion. Nearly half a million people have been killed, and about 12,000 children have died or were injured in the conflict in the past decade, according to the U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF. The conflict also resulted in the largest displacement crisis since World War II. The Norwegian Refugee Council this week said that since the war began in 2011, an estimated 2.4 million people were displaced every year in and outside Syria. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians face continued displacement with each year that the conflict continues and economic conditions deteriorate.
Number of missing Nigerian students raised to 39 after armed raid (Reuters) Nine more students than originally thought are missing after gunmen stormed a forestry college in northwest Nigeria earlier this week, a government official in Nigeria’s Kaduna state said on Saturday. The revision brings the total number of missing students to 39 following Thursday’s nighttime raid on the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, the fourth mass school abduction in northern Nigeria since December. Kaduna city is the capital of Kaduna state, part of a region where attacks by gangs of armed men, referred to as bandits, have festered for years. Military and police attempts to tackle the gangs have had little success, while many worry that state authorities are making the situation worse by letting kidnappers go unpunished, paying them off or providing incentives.

Snakes & Butterflies | Part II
Pairing: Jimin x reader
Genre: Soulmate Au!, Fluff, Angst, Smut (Maybe, still debating)
Words: 2.9k
Warnings: None
Note: Here’s part 2 of my story, I hope you enjoy and understand that although Jimin has yet to come into the story, I hope you may find some of yourself in the character I am imagining and although BTS is important, I believe they would want us to value ourselves as much as we value them.
Tumblr media
The drive to San Ysidro was uneventful… I wish I could say that. My mom’s friend had always rubbed me off the weird way. Maybe it had to do with the fact that my mom took me to her once my Soulmate mark never appeared by the time of puberty, which is the latest it should have, in some rare cases. It was straight out of cult movie, people chanting, this random lady rubbing essential oils and raw eggs on me. That was enough to traumatize me as a child. I respect my mother’s culture but brujeria (witchcraft) is where I draw the line. My father took the more medical route, I had seen countless doctors and all could not tell my parents what was wrong, having no mark was unheard of, they were very rare cases.
Miss Cassandra was the only one who could actually give my parents an answer. It is common knowledge that Marks are there just to guide people’s souls to one another and the rest is up to them. When my grandpa died, grandma’s mark started to fade, but it never completely faded away. Although my case is rare, Miss Cassandra told my parents that my Soulmate did not exist in this lifetime, that perhaps in my past life, I had sinned and now I was being punished. I rolled my eyes at the memory. She was such a witch, literally. Now here I am about to knock on her door.
“It’s about time you got here!” a small lady with long black hair whipped open the door, regarding me with annoyed eyes. “I’m trying to watch my novela! It’s not like Netflix, okay I can’t just pause it!”
“Hello to you too, Miss Cassandra '' I said entering in the small house and almost coughed with the smell of lavender and sweet lemongrass smell. Above the door hung some dried flowers, almost whacking me. “I love what you’ve done with the place very welcoming.”
“Haha, very funny” she said pulling my coat off and ushering me to her kitchen. “Hurry up I don’t have enough time for this. I have a cleansing to do in thirty minutes.”
“What another person with pink eye?”
SMACK.
“OW!”
“Cállate!” she yelled. “You’re gonna wake up Miguel!” As if her yelling won’t. I sat on the bar stool and saw that she had already prepared all the ingredients for the henna tattoo.
“I don’t like that we’re appropriating Indian culture,” I muttered.
“I don’t either,” she said stirring the mix. “But business is booming.” Great, consumerism trumps morals. Wait-
“Hold on,” I said in surprise. “What do you mean booming?”
“Ay Díos mio,” she exasperated. “You’re mother wasn’t kidding! It’s like you’re living under a rock! Do you really not watch the news?”
“Well I didn’t think it was such a big deal!”
“Of course,” she said rolling her eyes. “Those girls have all come to me for help.”
“Huh, did you tell them they were sinners too?”
“Of course not!” She said putting on gloves. “I said they were cursed.”
“I love how nonchalant you are about all this.” I said as she wiped my arm down and began to apply the henna.
“I’m being very serious, but I know you have a hard time believing me, you are your father’s child.” She said not taking her eyes off my arm. “You never told me why you always want this specific sword as a mark.”
“Besides the fact that you told me marks as weapons were rare,” I said averting my eyes from her family photos across the room. “Which they aren’t since I helped a couple with arrow tattoos yesterday, there’s not any other reason.”
“Arrows?” she said dapping the tool in more henna ink. “That’s strange…”
We fell into a comfortable silence and I let her continue to focus on her task at hand. My phone buzzed in my pocket and making sure she was focused, I pulled it out and sure enough, there was a message from Jungkook.
Jungkook [6:30 pm]: Hey noona, it’s me Jungkook. Is everything ok?
Me [6:32 pm]: Yes, I should be home around 7.
Jungkook [6:33 pm]: Okay, I’m making pasta. Let me know when you are on your way.
Me [6:35 pm] OK.
“Is that Jungkook?” Cassandra said as she stepped back to look at her handiwork. I was momentarily taken aback, but realized my mom must have already told her. “How did he take it?”
“I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“He knows,” Cassandra said already cleaning up the ink. “Take a look to see if you like it.”
“How do you know-” I stuttered in shock. “It’s fine, I don’t need to look and I’ll make some excuse, I’ll say that my mark was burned off too just like those girls.”
“Your scars are too old for that.” she said regarding me with pity. “Just tell him the truth.”
“I can’t.” I said with finality in my tone. I wanted this conversation to end. “I don’t need any more pity from anybody.”
“Ah you see, you say that, but that is not what you want.” She said sighing. “You may be able to fool your mother but you can’t fool me. Soy una bruja. (I’m a witch)”
“I’m not having this conversation,” I said standing up and getting my bag and coat, I pulled out a couple of twenties and placed them on the table.
“Do not be afraid of fate, Y/N” she said placing the money back in my hand. “I’m not entirely sure why but there’s something different, a spark in your future.”
“So you can see the future now?” I said scoffing as I walked towards the front door.
“You had a dream last night? About the past?”
I stopped in my tracks. Feeling the color drain from my face.
“A dream that felt like a memory? But you don’t remember?” she said as she approached me from behind and when I refused to turn around, she continued. “Destiny always finds a way, no matter how hard you try to erase it.”
“Well,” I said shivering. “If destiny decides to come knocking on my door, I could tell it to fuck off.” Cassandra laughs and smacks me on the back, making me flinch. This woman hits me more than my own mother.
“That is something you would say mija,” she said hugging me. “Promise me you won’t cry too much.”
“Huh?”
“Ve con Díos” she replies and closes her door, leaving me in confusion on her doorstep.
“‘Don’t cry too much?’” I repeated softly to myself as I made my way back to my car, only to see a man leaning against my passenger side. Great. “Can I help you?”
The man looks up at me from his phone. He looked at me up and down and started to approach me but stopped when I reached into my bag. He holds his hands up.
“Hold on!” He says, “I’m not gonna hurt you, I just wanted to talk that’s all.”
“Well you can talk from there I can hear just fine.” I said clutching my taser in my hand.
“Are you Y/N?”
“How the hell-did you follow me here?!”
“NO!” He yelled. “God no! Look here look!” He pulls up his sleeve to his jacket and shows me his arm. Nothing. No soulmate mark. “I’m just like you.”
“Excuse me?” I said offensively. “What the hell do you know about me?”
“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound rude. Let me explain.” He said pulling out his wallet, he pulls out a card and attempts to hand it to me. When I refuse to take it, he places it on the windshield wiper of my car. “My name is Minho. Lee Minho. I’m a professor at the University. I heard about your situation. I-”
My phone rings and we’re both startled and I quickly pull it out of my pocket and answer without checking.
“Noona?” Jungkook says his voice laced with worry. “Where are you? It’s already ten minutes past seven.”
“Oh Kookie,” I say cooing even though my heart was beating rapidly. “Don’t worry, I just had to stop by for gas real quick. I’ll be there in 30.”
“Oh okay Noona” Jungkook says softly. “Drive safely okay?” I hum in response and he hangs up.
“Okay bye babe! Love you!” I say as I hear the dial tone. I look back at Minho and he seemed a bit confused. “I don’t know what you are talking about. My Soulmate is waiting for me, so if you’ll excuse me.”
“I’m sorry,” He said moving away from my car. “But you are Y/N right?”
“I’m sorry but how in the hell-”
“Your father sent me here.” He said, “He said you would be here. He told me everything. If there’s somewhere more private you want to go to dis-”
“Look,” I said stepping up to him. “I don’t know why you think it’s appropriate to approach me like this but I am definitely not interested in what you have to say or offer and as a matter of fact you can forget that I even exist.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t do that,” Minho said with a hint of desperation. And with a shake of his head, he took a step back. “I didn’t want to meet you in these circumstances either, but I was just so curious and-”
“Look,” I said interrupting him. “I’m sure you have good intentions, but you are not the first man my father has pushed on me. You are the first to approach me this way though and trust me you are not making a good first impression.”
“But-”
“I have to go,” I said with finality, entering my car. “I have someone waiting for me.”
Instead of stopping me, Minho just watched me go. I sighed with relief once I got back on the highway. I would have to break so many laws just to make it on time and I was grateful that the traffic wasn’t too bad. Once I had a view of the cottage, I slowed down not wanting to scare the beach goers. My phone started to ring again and instead of Jungkook’s name like I expected, it was an unknown number. I answered and a deep gruff voice resonated from the speakers of my car.
“Why do you always have to disappoint me?” My father said with an eerie calm voice.
“How did you get my number?” I responded back, clenching my hands on the steering wheel. “Mom pro-”
“Do you really think she had a choice in the matter?”
“And do you think you have the right to decide she has no choice?” I scoffed. “You must have threatened to divorce her again. And you’re supposed to be Soul-”
“ENOUGH.” He all but roared and I flinched causing me to jerk the car.
“I’m driving right now,” I said rolling my eyes. “So if you don’t mind, can we keep this conversation civil?”
“You’re gonna want to talk to this professor.”
“Why? Because he has money?”
“His research-”
“So what now I’m gonna be a lab monkey for this guy?!”
“Y/N did you see his Mark?” He said calm once more, and when I said nothing, he continued. “He doesn’t have one either. Just like you.”
“What?”
“Talk to him.” He said and the phone call was disconnected. I had managed to park on the driveway of the cottage. On my windshield, I could see the business card that Minho left. I felt my breath leave my lungs and I could feel tears starting to pool in my eyes. My thoughts were racing and it made me dizzy. I quickly got out of the car and made my way to the beach, not even going to the cottage. Thank goodness it was a short walk. Once I stepped onto the uneven sand I sat down and hugged my knees to my chest. I then proceeded to take deep calming breaths and once more I focused on the sound of the waves, willing myself to think logically and calmly.
He doesn’t have a mark? Is he one of the victims too? Or was he really just like me? Did he never have one like me? And if so, what does that mean for me? Could it be possible that no mark could be a Mark?
“Is he my Soulmate?” I thought out loud.
“Noona?”
I jumped up from my position that I almost lost my footing, and strong arms caught me. Looking up, Jungkook was staring down at me in confusion and shock once he saw my tear stained cheeks. I quickly scrambled from his embrace and wiped my cheeks.
“Jungkook!” I said avoiding eye contact. “How did you-”
“Why are you crying?” Jungkook said cupping my cheeks in his hands. I felt my face get hot. “Is this about your Mark?”
“Let’s go inside,” I said tugging his hands from my face, but I held his hand as I led him back to the cottage. “Did you start the movie?”
“Y/N,” Jungkook said stepping his way in front of me, blocking the path. “Why were-”
“Just got off the phone with my dad,” I shrugged. It wasn’t exactly a lie. “The usual: ‘You are such a disappointment’, ‘You’re not my daughter if you are useless.’ The works.”
“I don’t remember him being like that,” Jungkook said, pulling me to a hug. I cleared my throat as I felt my face once again go hot. This boy was gonna give me heart palpitations.
“People change,” I replied, wrapping my arms around him. “Like you. When did you get so tall! I still can’t believe you’re the same Kookie that used to pull on my pigtails.”
“Noona,” Jungkook whined and bent down to tuck his face in my neck. I felt myself stiffen and almost immediately he released me and started up the path to the cottage. I quickly followed, not wanting to be out in the cold anymore. I followed him inside and Luke Skywalker’s face was on the TV screen and I squealed and jumped onto the couch getting myself comfortable for the movie marathon. Jungkook comes back from the kitchen and hands me a bowl of pasta to which I hum in thanks, my eyes never leaving the screen. “People never really change.”
I looked at him and he was staring right back. I put the pasta down and grabbed the remote to pause the movie. We sat in silence for a bit. Yuki jumped onto the armchair across from us and was staring intently at me, almost as if waiting for me to speak up.
“Jungk-”
“Noona,” Jungkook says, “You don’t have to explain anything to me, if you’re not ready.”
“I-” I sighed. “Depends on what you want to know..”
“Since when?” He sighs. “How long has it been?”
You should tell him the truth
“If I tell you,” I say as I clench my fingers. “Will you promise not to look at me differently or walk on eggshells around me?”
“Noona,” Jungkook says, turning to face me. “Why would I look at you any different?”
I turn to look at him with incredulous eyes and his eyes shined with sincerity. It threw me off. I look back at Yuki who started to purr, almost as if to encourage me.
“Well when I hit pube-”
“No Noona,” Jungkook said with a sigh. “How long have you shut yourself off from the world?”
“I’m not sure I understand,” I said confused. “Why does that matter?”
“Seriously?!” Jungkook shouted, standing up. “Noona, why aren’t you acting like yourself? You were never one to hide, there’s moments where you seem like yourself but then you’re this completely different person-almost like your mem-”
He stopped abruptly almost if coming to a realization or as if he said too much.
“Jungkook,” I said standing up as well, wanting to comfort him but not sure what to do. “You aren’t curious as to why I don’t have a mark? I mean that’s what everyone-”
“Noona,” Jungkook said almost exasperated. “Mark or not, you’re you. I know that life changes people, I understand that but you act as if you’re ashamed.”
“Kookie,” I said stepping back. “You have no idea what my life has been like.”
“I’m sorry,” Jungkook said covering his face. “You’re right, but I can’t but feel guilty-”
“Jungkookie,” I said rubbing his back. “You have no reason to feel guilty.”
“I’m sorry that we-that I wasn’t there for you.” Jungkook sighed as he wrapped his arms around me, using my head as a headrest. Normally I wouldn’t be comfortable with this amount of skinship, mostly because I never let myself get close to anyone besides my mom and Jennie. But with Jungkook, it felt so natural and I felt a sense of relief. “Jimin and I would have never let you hide…”
I felt myself stiffen with the mention of Jimin’s name, and I almost recoiled from him, almost as if my body felt a sense of shame. But why would I feel that way?
“Noona?” Jungkook said, cocking his head in confusion. “Are you-”
Jungkook’s phone rang, interrupting him as we both came to our senses. He quickly ran to get it from the kitchen table as I gathered Yuki in my arms, requesting cuddles from her.
“Speaking of the devil,” Jungkook said, his voice laced with a hint of anger. He showed me his phone and ‘Jiminie Hyung’ was facetiming him.

Holy Land Retrospective - Day 9
Reminder: clicking on the link for each photo (links are all in red text) will take you to the Flickr page where you can see the photo in larger sizes.
This is the final reflection. If you’re just beginning to read these, start with DAY 1, or catch up on DAY 2, DAY 3, DAY 4, DAY 5, DAY 6, DAY 7, or DAY 8. Or just read on if you’re up to speed!
Tumblr media
PHOTO 40: The last morning in the Holy Land, and already the group was dispersed. Some left to go to Petra and Jordan, and others were going to Haifa for the day before catching flights. I had two places I wanted to visit before setting off for the ordeal of Tel Aviv airport: my Dominican brothers at their priory and church of St Stephen, and the Holy Sepulchre of course.
At 6 a.m., I arrived at the church of the Holy Sepulchre, and walking through the doors, I looked at the ancient graffiti engraved on the door frame. This part of the church dates to the 12th-century; the Crusaders had regained the city of Jerusalem on 15 July 1099. In the bottom left, there is a medieval heraldic shield carved into the stone, and all over the stone surface there are crosses and inscriptions; each a signature and a prayer of sorts.
On my last day in the Holy City, I empathised with this impulse to leave one’s mark behind. Because the holy sites and especially this church of the Holy Sepulchre had made such an impression on my heart – I had even briefly considered getting one of those ancient tattoos that medieval pilgrims would get! – one felt the desire to reciprocate. But I knew better than to deface the ancient surfaces! So, I just ran my fingers over the stone, and took some detailed photos of the church. Every time I look at these photos now the memories and impressions return, but so does the yearning to go back to Jerusalem.
Tumblr media
PHOTO 41: The Empty Tomb of Christ draws pilgrims from all over the world, and the flagstones of this courtyard are worn smooth by the countless feet who have crossed this threshold. Like the three women who came to the tomb that first Easter morning, these sisters had also come early this morning for Holy Mass. Having encountered the Risen Lord in the Eucharist, they are now leaving the church of Holy Sepulchre, sent out to preach the risen Christ.
“Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise."And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.” – Luke 24:6-9
The sight of these Missionaries of Charity in their familiar and distinctive habits – sisters whose congregation I have worked with in every city where I’ve ministered and lived – was a happy sight. As a relatively new religious congregation in the Church (established in 1950) their presence in this ancient historical place that is at the centre of our Faith spoke to me of the vitality of Christ’s holy Church.
They also reminded me that we do not come to the Holy Land, nor to the Empty Tomb in order to stay and linger here in Jerusalem. Rather, this is just the beginning. It is right and fitting and proper that we are sent away from this place, and that we should disperse to every corner of the world, so that the presence of the risen Lord and his divine mercy should fill the world.
"Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” You are witnesses of these things.” – Luke 24:46-48
Tumblr media
PHOTO 42: These lamps are among the first things one sees upon entering the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Eight of them hang above the stone of anointing, the place where Jesus’s body was anointed after he was taken down from the Cross, and before he was laid in the tomb. Like all the lamps that are kept alight in this church, they are a sign of the prayers and hopes of so many people offered up to God constantly in this holy place. However, the lamps also make me think of the light of faith.
For many pilgrims, coming to the Empty Tomb, and seeing the holy sites of the Holy Land revives our faith. Like the first disciples, perhaps we too are afraid and despondent. Perhaps, we too need to go and see the place where they had laid him: “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Mt 28:5-6)
But for others it is enough to have the witness of Scripture for God’s Word is “a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Ps 119:105) Hence St John says: “the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.” (Jn 20:8-9) This suggests that those who know the Scriptures do not need to go and see for themselves. Christians who cannot travel all the way to the Holy Land are not disadvantaged because we can and should receive the light of faith wherever we are, in our own homes and in our local churches.
Therefore, we can pray God that the light of faith should be kindled by the Holy Spirit, and kept burning in the lamps of our hearts. Like these lamps that burn constantly in the Holy Sepulchre church over the stone of anointing, may the Holy Spirit anoint us and fill us with the light of faith. As Pope Francis said:
“Faith, received from God as a supernatural gift, becomes a light for our way, guiding our journey through time. On the one hand, it is a light coming from the past, the light of the foundational memory of the life of Jesus which revealed his perfectly trustworthy love, a love capable of triumphing over death. Yet since Christ has risen and draws us beyond death, faith is also a light coming from the future and opening before us vast horizons which guide us beyond our isolated selves towards the breadth of communion. We come to see that faith does not dwell in shadow and gloom; it is a light for our darkness.” – Lumen Fidei, 4.

PHOTO 43: It was time to go and meet my fellow Dominicans, who have a priory and school close to the Damascus Gate where St Stephen the protomartyr of the Church was stoned to death for preaching the Gospel.
“And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was consenting to his death. And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.” (Acts 7:59–8:2)
The Scriptures mention, then, that St Stephen was buried, and the site was outside the walls of Jerusalem, on the north side where there was an ancient cemetery. Amazingly, this site is now home to the Dominican friars in Jerusalem.
For the Friars Preachers (as Dominicans are formally known) returned to Jerusalem in 1890, and they fittingly established themselves in the burial place of the first martyred preacher of the Resurrection, St Stephen! The French Dominicans set up the French School of the Bible and Archaeology on this site where, in 439, a great basilica had been built in honour of St Stephen by the Empress Eudoxia. The complex as it now stands is known as the Ecole Biblique and at its heart is this basilica church built in 1900 on the same ground plan as the 5th-century basilica that had once stood here. Large swathes of the original mosaic floor still survives in this new church of St Stephen along with some relics of the protomartyr – the major relics were taken to Rome.
I was warmly welcomed by the friars and given a quick tour of the complex, which included a quick look at the archival photographs of 19th-century Jerusalem; the library and archaeological collection of the school; the ancient mosaics of the 5th-century basilica; and, most astonishingly, a complex of underground stone-hewn tombs that pre-date the time of Christ!
But time was running out, so I made my way back to the hotel, bypassing the church of the Holy Sepulchre one final time.
Tumblr media
PHOTO 44: Returning to the church of the Holy Sepulchre just after midday, the church was full of people. This was my first time here at the height of the day, and there was no time to join the line of people waiting to go up to Calvary. So I knelt at the stone of anointing, placing my Rosary on it, particularly a new silver medal of the Jerusalem Cross that I had added to my Rosary; I have a custom of adding medals from my pilgrimages to my Rosary.
Walking to the Rotunda where the Aedicule is, I saw this wonderful sight: beams of light shone through the oculus into this most holy place where the Empty Tomb of Christ is. I recalled these words from the Easter Vigil:
“May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds!”
With some sadness, I tore myself away from this sight, from this place redolent with the smell of incense, and thronging with people from diverse cultures, languages, and nations. And we were all here separated and dispersed in many ways but fundamentally united by one living and indivisible faith: Christ is risen!
"This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear.” – Acts 2:32-33.
Tumblr media
PHOTO 45: Walking back to the hotel, I looked down at the ancient stones that paved the street, taking in the antiquity of this city, and wondering again how many had come here before me; how many more would tread this path to the Holy Sepulchre. As I walked through the Jaffa Gate for the last time, I saw this man sitting in the shade in a nook against the city wall.
Something about his look seemed timeless and classic, and the stones around him spoke to me of permanence and endurance. Somehow, I became aware of my own transience and little place in history. I was humbled before all that Jerusalem stood for.
And yet, the Lord astonished his disciples with these words, sobering words but full of hope for our times:
"You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down." As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" And Jesus answered them, "Take heed that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, `I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs. "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” – Mt 24:2-14
Lord, grant by your grace that I shall endure in faith unto the end!
Thank you for joining in this novena, this 9-day retrospective of my first pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Below is a photo of the pilgrim’s certificate, and a photo of our whole group!

After the Harry Potter costume party of getting to know Martha/Eva’s world in S3EP1, in episode 2 it’s finally time to visit Adam’s post-apocalypse world, which is a form of the world without Winden that Hannah and Ulrich have dreamed of for decades. Ironically, Hannah and Ulrich both flaked out on the apocalypse and have retired separately in the Winden of previous decades. Katharina followed Ulrich.
Peter and Elizabeth serve as our point of view characters for the aftermath of the shockwave as they search for Charlotte and Franziska. Charlotte has jumped forward 33 years and is now in the barren future with Adult Elizabeth. The version of Young Alt Martha who transported Jonas to her world, then left him behind, is with Stranger, Bartosz, Franziska and Magnus in 1888.
We spend much of this episode in 1987, where things have changed in the last 3 months.
Note: I’m going to continue calling Adam/Jonas’ world the Prime world and Eva/Martha’s world the Alt world, because that’s the easiest way for me to keep track of them in my head. I’ll label the characters the same way. It gets too cumbersome to say Adam’s world Jonas and too confusing to use a code when the character movements get complicated, though eventually I will have to differentiate the Young Alt Marthas with 1 & 2.
Recap
The episode begins with the first sex dream of the season. The Young Alt Martha who’s in 1888 dreams about having sex with Young Jonas in her bedroom, in her world. Soon Jonas disappears and her hands are coated in blood and grime, while holding the St Christopher medal that they pass between them as the symbol of their connection. She tries to stop Jonas’ bleeding the way Jonas tried to stop Prime Martha’s; she tries to wash the blood from her hands the way Prime Claudia did after Egon died; and she stands at the mouth of the cave in front of police tape the way… Well, that’s a universal experience on Dark at this point.
Then Martha startles awake in 1888. She’s in the guest bedroom at the Tannhaus clock factory B&B, or the boarding house that will become Erna’s in 32 years- where the travelers sleep is never made completely clear. Stranger sits and stares at her the way Adam will watch Jonas sleep someday, only Stranger manages to be creepier about it, blowing all of my S2 arguments that he could never grow up to be such a mean old man.
The personality change that goes along with a cycle change anyway and another failure to save his Martha have taken their toll on his fragile sanity. He was always a stalker, but the look in his eye now is no longer calm or benign. Its malevolent, even though he doesn’t know this woman. It’s enough that she’s the wrong Martha.
He’s holding the letter from “Martha” that Young Noah gave him in Hannah’s kitchen in S2E8, which told him to save Bartosz, Magnus and Franziska with the device. He followed those instructions and left the kitchen, leaving Prime Martha to her fate. He’s probably figured out that this is likely a version of the woman who wrote that letter.
Stranger looks like he has a moment of hope that she’ll recognize him when she wakes up. When she doesn’t, he coldly tells her to get dressed, then leaves the room. He’s left her a pile of period appropriate clothes on a chair.
Despite what I said earlier about the world without Winden, Winden is always Winden, and it always rains there, every month except June, so it’s pouring right now.
Stranger hasn’t warned the others, so Magnus and Bartosz have the fun of thinking Martha survived, then learning it’s not her. Franziska apparently didn’t care about Martha all that much.
Alt Martha: “He’s right. I’m not Martha. Not your Martha. I promised I would make everything right again, so none of this would happen. So that you all don’t die in my world and I don’t die in yours. So that Ulrich… Dad… Mikkel… so you all come back. So all this can really end at last.”
Did she just imply that the other 4 people in that room die in her world? Which would mean Prime Young Jonas does, because her world doesn’t have its own Jonas. Hmmm.
A loud alarm goes off in the Prime world version of Jonas’ bedroom. Another joke/warning that carries between scenes. The alarm is in the form of Mikkel’s clock/radio playing the song “You Spin Me Right Round”, which played in the bunker when Erik Obendorf was held there back in S1. It’s also a little foreshadowing for what we’ll hear on the radio in Claudia’s upcoming scene.
I will never stop admiring this show’s ability to layer and multitask.
It’s September 22nd, 1987. Most of the episode takes place on September 22nd in one year or another. Something big must happen then or be close to happening, but I don’t think we know what yet.
[I’m still writing Snowpiercer recaps while writing Dark, so my head is in 2 very different apocalyptic, symbolic dystopias right now. Give me another week or so, then Snowpiercer will be done for the season and I can focus on this more closely. But also, ugh, 3 seasons of constantly rewritten details, help. As always, I reserve the right to edit my work for a while after publication so I can add what I forgot or figured out a little too late. Also, check out Snowpiercer, it’s a good show!]
Katharina wakes up in Mikkel’s bed. She was in the passage when the apocalypse hit at the end of S2. It’s 3 months later and she’s become Stranger Katharina, sleeping in her son’s bed in his abandoned house.
Did the adult version of Mikkel with the black goo/cesium 137 appear to her in the passage, the way he appeared to Stranger Jonas at the end of S1? And if so, did that affect her sanity even more than all of these other events would have? She saw Mikkel in the guilt/love montage, so we know he’s her hallucination/ghost visitation of choice.
Katharina gets dressed and goes downstairs. Sadly, she doesn’t check the milk like Jonas and Martha always do. She does listen to a phone message for Ines saying that the phone bill is 3 months overdue, which means that Mikkel and Ines must have left the house not long after Old Ulrich tried to rescue/kidnap him in June.
Katherina has stacks of “Missing” flyers on the table with Mikkel’s photo on them. She’s searching for Mikkel here as her own child, despite the fact that legally he’s Ines child now. The flyer says Mikkel has been missing for 3 months. Katharina leaves through the French doors, where she’s broken a hole in one of the windows.

Jana and Tronte are holding the funeral and burial for Mads’ empty coffin today. Hermann Albers (Katharina’s absent father) comforts Jana that at least having the coffin and grave will give them some closure, even with an empty grave. And she and Tronte have each other. Jana looks at Tronte across the room and raises her glass to him sardonically.
Jana: “At least we have each other. Now we can get our closure together, looking at a coffin that’s empty. Tell everyone where you were when Mads vanished. F–king your girlfriend. When my son disappeared, he was screwing Claudia Tiedemann. If only you’d devoted as much energy to finding your own son as you’re wasting on finding your mistress. Then maybe Mads wouldn’t have gone.”
In the previous cycles, Jana lied to the police and gave Tronte an alibi other than Claudia. Ulrich never knew his father was with Claudia until he went through the police records in 2019 and realized his mother had lied to the police, so I doubt this conversation became common knowledge.
The conversation and the fact that the gossip didn’t spread are both shocking in a small town like Winden. Either this is the first time this conversation has happened or Tronte’s long standing affair with Claudia is such common knowledge that no one cares anymore.
Still, this is Jana’s finest moment as a character and a huge change from previous cycles- she started out in S1 as a depressed recluse, then was at least seen at a party, having fun, in Cycle 2. Now she’s able to stand up for herself and fight for what’s rightfully hers. This is the way it’s always been, but also due to the small changes Claudia and Jonas make each cycle, if we are to believe their interpretation of the eternal recurrence and its loopholes.
Tronte’s devotion to Claudia never really changes, because why would Claudia change one of her greatest assets?
I thought what Jana said was quite clear, but Tronte says that he doesn’t understand what she’s saying, which will become one of the catchphrases of the season.
Every season of Dark is about secrets, lies and confusion. S1 focused more on the confusion between what was real and what wasn’t. S2 was about keeping secrets while clearing up some of the confusion. In S3, secrets will be revealed and questions will be answered, but at the same time, the characters lie, lie, lie. To each other, to themselves, to the audience. Question everything that everyone says.
When someone does finally tell the truth, the person on the receiving end frequently says, “What are you saying?” They hear the truth so infrequently that they can’t process it. Or it doesn’t fit their worldview, so it bounces off their ears. Or, as with Tronte in this scene, it’s an inconvenient truth, so they’d prefer it remained unspoken. They’d like anyone within hearing range to believe it’s the truthteller who’s lying or delusional.
Jana’s not backing down this time. She dumps her purse on the floor. There are several newspaper articles with headlines about Claudia disappearing within a week of her father’s death, questioning if the two are connected. Jana implies that Claudia could have had something to do with Mads’ disappearance as well. Tronte walks out of the house without another word.
Finally, we really are going to post shockwave Winden, September 22, 2020. Of course it’s pouring rain. A figure in a mud gray raincoat removes a makeshift door from the front of the police station (most of the glass in town was broken by the shockwave). It’s Adult Claudia. She has the place encased in plastic and boards, locking it up pretty tight, which is a good thing, because she’s leaving her dying daughter in there alone most of the time.
I doubt Regina could get out easily if she needed to, but Regina is in such bad shape that she can’t even sit up, so it’s not really an issue. Claudia has her on a makeshift bed, with a heatlamp pointed at her and a radio playing, like she’s a pet lizard. Or a science project.
The radio is playing a report about what’s known of the cause of the June 27 global natural disasters.
Radio Announcer: “The world’s scientists are still looking for an explanation for the events of June 27, 2020. The epicenter/origin of the global catastrophe is still thought to be the small town of Winden. A French research team believes it is possible that our world stood still for a fraction of a nanosecond on June 27. Tidal forces may have diverged as a result. This would explain the global tidal waves, weather phenomena, and disturbances of electrical systems, which in turn could explain the countless number of airplane crashes and the simultaneous loss of power supply to nuclear power plants worldwide. There is currently no sign of the situation stabilizing…”
Claudia turns off the radio. As a physicist, she helped create this world and she already understands what’s going on. She has work to do to achieve her next goal, but the apocalypse was no accident, at least to her older self, who was quite clear that everything had to happen the way it always has. And we’ve known since S1E10 that this apocalypse has happened before. This is where it gets a little tricky to figure out who told which version what and when. This is, at the very least, the 3rd or 4th cycle with an apocalypse, since both Young and Stanger Jonas have seen it before.
But good on the French researchers for finally figuring something out! I bet they get to see the God particle before Elizabeth executes them this cycle, too!
Claudia pulls out a tattered box of Tamoxifen, Regina’s breast cancer medication, and goes to her daughter. Regina is lying very still and breathing shallowly, as if she’s in pain. She’s bathed in red/orange light from the heat lamp. Claudia asks how she is. Regina says, “Mama?” Claudia leaves the medicine pack next to Regina and turns to walk away. When Regina realizes she’s leaving, Claudia says she’ll be back at sunset.
Well that was cold. Regina looks like she’s barely alive and Claudia is leaving her alone in the cold, dark police station where she also left Aleksander, Regina’s beloved husband,  to die in the shockwave. Do they even know if Bartosz is alive or dead, since Claudia couldn’t be bothered to save her grandson?
Adult Claudia is just the worst. She can’t find anyone to help with Regina, like a clinic or field hospital? What was the point of rescuing her from the quick death of the apocalypse for this long, slow torture? Regina is living through many people’s worst nightmare about how they’ll die. Claudia has made her a homeless person, slowly dying alone, in pain and in desperate poverty. The only comfort she has is the heat lamp, which is a fire hazard. The medication is prolonging her torture at this point.
Claudia is keeping Regina alive for her own comfort, because she can’t bear the idea of losing her daughter, but she still wants nothing to do with the mundane realities of a relationship with another human being. It’s hard to understand why she’s bothering, when she treated Egon and Tronte the same way.
She’s always, since she was a child, cared more about science and math, yet still had a need to keep a person or two on the string. But there must be other people helping her with the God particle at this point.

Young Elizabeth and Peter Doppler are staying in Benni’s trailer on the edge of town. It’s metal, so maybe its roof survived better than regular houses and the rest is easier to board up than their house. When they leave the trailer, Peter turns on a geiger counter to see if the rain is too radioactive to go out in. The levels are safe enough, so they walk to the military encampment near the power plant that was still in place when Jonas traveled there in S1/2.
The guard tells them that the area will be closed off in 5 days. They’re evacuating the zone and sealing off the restricted portions (which includes the power plant).
Peter, becoming agitated: “What are you saying?”
Guard: “We’re walling it in.”
He lets Peter and Elizabeth through, but asks why Peter would do this to his daughter. Young Noah lurks behind a truck and watches his future wife.
Stalking future, former and alternative loved ones is such a habit on this show.
The wall they’re talking about building is the one which surrounded the power plant in the future in S2. Jonas, Silja and Elizabeth had a spot where they could sneak under it to get to the God Particle in the power plant.
Back in 1888, Alt Martha and Stranger Jonas have explained to Magnus, Franziska and Bartosz that she’s from a parallel world which ends in an apocalypse, just like the Prime world. Magnus can’t accept that there could be another world with a different history.
Stranger asks Martha how she found him. She says that Jonas told her where Stranger was when Jonas traveled from the Prime world to the Alt world. Franziska brilliantly points out that Martha said there isn’t a Jonas native to the Alt world. Stranger is at least smart enough to figure out that a version of himself could have given Alt Martha the information, but even he gets stuck on the fact that he doesn’t remember traveling to her world or meeting her before.
He accuses her of lying, then asks if she wrote the letter Young Noah gave him, what she used to travel between worlds and if Adam sent her. He manhandles her while he’s trying to get answers out of her.
You’d think backwards and sideways time travel wasn’t possible in this universe. She’s standing right in front of them, having just come from another world. That means that a future Jonas or a Jonas from a past cycle could have traveled to her world. We saw the Unknown trio take the instructions for the world hopping sphere from Adam’s lair, so Adam had that capability before 1987, even though we didn’t see him use it. Or did we? He might have used a sphere to leave 2020 before the shockwave hit after he killed Prime Martha in S2Ep8. It would explain how he traveled as quickly and quietly as he did.
The group is interrupted by an older man who’s noticed that they’re late in starting their experiments today. He’s blind, but as soon as he enters the room he senses Martha’s presence. Stranger walks out of the workshop without speaking. The older man, Gustav Tannhaus, touches Martha’s face and figures out that she’s the reason Stranger is in an even worse mood than usual. Gustav tells her she doesn’t need to be afraid of him. Even though he has the reputation for being not quite right in the head, what he really has is the gift of foresight.

In 1987, Katharina stands in the high school hallway and hands out “Missing” flyers between classes. None of the kids recognize Mikkel. Young Ulrich stops to talk to Adult Katharina and mentions that a “lunatic” might have gotten Mikkel. Young Katharina shows up and is impatient, so she and Ulrich leave for class, ignoring Adult Katharina’s questions. Young Hannah hangs back and tells Adult Katharina about the old man who tried to kidnap Michael last summer.
Adult Katharina thanks Hannah for telling her how to find Ulrich by shoving her against a wall and warning her to stay away from Mikkel and Ulrich, Hannah’s future husband and her lifelong friend.
Hannah looks at Katharina like she’s deranged. At this point, I think she is. Hannah just went out of her way to help a stranger, again, and has no idea who “Mikkel” even is.
Tronte is dealing with Jana outing his affair with Claudia by questioning Claudia’s assistant, Jasmin, about Claudia’s disappearance. Since the whole town knows about them and his wife has stopped pretending, he doesn’t have to skulk in the shadows anymore.
Jasmin tells him that Claudia, who had always been meticulous about her appearance, really let herself go in her final week at the plant. She wore the same thing twice! And her hair was a mess. She forgot about appointments. Jasmin thought it had something to do with the old woman and dog who came to visit her (Old Claudia and Gretchen), since Claudia was different after that.
Jasmin is right- Old Claudia brought Claudia’s childhood dog, Gretchen, back to her after her pet had disappeared in the caves 33 years years earlier, as proof that time travel is real. That was the final proof that Adult Claudia needed, in combination with what Bernd showed her: the barrels of cesium 137 stored in the caves and the odd data from the power plant accident in the summer of 1986, which pointed to the existence of the God particle.
In the 2020 post shockwave bunker, Adult Claudia begins to assemble her family tree on the wall. The strings that connect the photos form one of the Gordian knots that she’s slowly deciphering.
Peter and Elizabeth have reached their destination, the official Winden corpse ID tent for the dead lost in the blast. There are rows and rows of photos showing the faces of the dead on the wall. This is what the checkpoint guard thought that Peter should spare Elizabeth. The faces of almost everyone she’s ever known are on this wall.
But Elizabeth is strong and avoiding the truth doesn’t change it. She’s always preferred to have information rather than be left out. This is the stuff of nightmares, whether you sees the photos or see the town itself.
We’re shown photos for Officer Justina Jankowski and Aleksander Tiedemann, who were in the police station. Benni was probably at home. Inspector Clausen and Torben Wöller were in the power plant with Charlotte, in the room with the barrels where the rift formed. No idea where Jürgen Obendorf was, possibly also working somewhere on the power plant grounds. Their heads are all easily recognizable and in relatively good shape, for having been through an apocalypse.
Peter and Eli look through the rows, then check with each other. Neither has found Franziska or Charlotte. A soldier tells Peter that all of the bodies that have been found are represented on the wall. When he relays the news to Eli, she suggests that maybe they time traveled. He hugs her.
We know they won’t find Charlotte and Franziska among the dead because Eli’s right, but they have no idea where their family members were when the shockwave hit.
Katharina rushes to the police station and demands information about the man in the psych ward who tried to kidnap Mikkel. Police Chief Martin Döhring says he’s told her before, he’s not going to give her any information relating to Michael Kahnwald, no matter how much she wants it. She has no proof of who she is or that Michael is her son.
But then Döhring does give in and tell Katharina that Child Protective Services has known where Michael and Ines were all along. They decided to go into hiding for a while for Michael’s safety and to give him a break. The “lunatic” is back in the psych ward, where he’s been for the last 34 years. That number rings a bell with Katharina, so she asks Döhring the kidnapper’s name, but he’s done with her and tells her not to come back again.
As Tronte is driving by the only bus stop in town, he notices Regina sitting there with Gretchen the Dog in her arms. He stops and asks if the dog belongs to Regina. Regina says that the dog belonged to Claudia.
Now that he’s established that Regina might have some information about Claudia for him, he offers her a ride.
Once she’s in the car, he mentions that the dog looks just like the original Gretchen (because Gretchen is a time traveling dog). Regina figures that’s why Claudia kept her. She asks Tronte if he thinks Claudia is guilty of the crimes she’s rumored to have committed, like murdering Regina’s grandfather and her close friend Mads Nielsen, Tronte’s son. Tronte doesn’t know.
I guess they know Claudia well. Since she did commit 2nd or 3rd degree murder on Egon, they are right to wonder what she’s capable of rather than blindly supporting her.
Tronte asks Regina if Claudia said anything about an old lady in the week before she vanished. Regina tells him no. Then he asks if she said anything about him. Both of them get emotional. Regina tells him Claudia didn’t mention him and asks to get out of the car. She’ll walk the rest of the way home. Belatedly, Tronte remembers to offer to help her if she needs anything, then drives away.
This is the man that everyone assumes is Regina’s father and he hasn’t even asked her how she’s been surviving for the last 3 months without a parent to to support her. Even if he’s not her father, he’s her mother’s oldest friend and lover. You’d think he’d care about her a little, for Claudia’s sake. It’s clear that he only cares about Claudia.
Regina is just so alone in the world. She didn’t need to be used by Tronte to further his obsession with her mother.
In 2020, Claudia begins work on the God particle. She makes the first of the tapes documenting her process. Jonas will listen to them when he arrives in the future in S2.

Peter and Eli visit the Kahnwald house, as everyone eventually must. It’s tattered, but still standing (which we knew, since Jonas sleeps there years later). Peter leaves Eli in the kitchen while he looks upstairs. Hannah’s photos are still there- blown on the floor and ragged, but otherwise still recognizable. Eli looks at one while she waits.
Young Noah startles Eli, but moves slowly so as not to scare her further. His hair is black instead of blonde, the way Magnus’ is in the Alt world. In both speech and partial sign, he tells her he’s looking for food and asks if she is, too. She pulls out a notepad and writes down “mom and sister”, then asks where he’s staying. He writes “cave” on the notepad, so she won’t forget. Now the page says “mom and sister cave”.
Peter comes back downstairs and accuses Noah of following them. He says that he told Noah to stay away from them.
Noah: “You want to protect her, I know. So do I. And I will. After you get killed.”
Noah speaks his answer, but doesn’t sign it. Then he leaves. He did speak the words in full view of Eli, so depending on her ability to read lips, she may have understood what he said.
That evening, it’s still pouring rain. Bartosz visits Alt Martha in her room and apologizes about Jonas. Just, you know, his general surly Jonasness. (It’s all Jonas’ fault.)
When they left 2020 at the end of S2Ep8, Stranger wasn’t aiming for 1888, but they traveled at the exact moment of the shockwave and this is where they ended up (this is where Time sent them). The device is out of cesium 137 and they can’t get anymore in this time period, so theyre stuck here until Jonas can create a new God particle.
Bartosz doesn’t seem to consider that someone else could come from the future and rescue them. Or Martha could help them. But they’d have to have a destination in mind if they left, so maybe that’s the issue.
Martha asks about the workshop, Gustav and what they’re doing. Bartosz doesn’t answer her questions. Instead he tells her he needs to show her something.
Down in the workshop, Gustav asks Stranger if Martha is a traveler, like they are.
Gustav: “When I found you, now that was a sign. A God-sent miracle. Whatever this woman means to you, don’t forget what we’re going to create. Paradise. Every calamity can be reversed. The world’s suffering can be destroyed before it even exists. A perfect world. Sic Mundus Creatus Est.”
Jonas listens to what he says. He still hates the sound of Sic Mundus, but he’s drawn to rest of Gustav’s prophecy, now that it’s not coming from Adam. He wouldn’t be Jonas if his mind weren’t spinning in self-hating circles.
He’s reached his Faust moment of temptation and he hates himself for being drawn to the same ideas and promises that he thinks corrupted Adam. Gustav is his White Devil, promising him a world without Winden, where suffering has ended, if only Jonas will put in the hard work and self sacrifice necessary to bring it about.
Gustav referred to the travelers as a miracle from God in all sincerity, but Jonas knows what that future brings. The temptation is to give in and believe it will turn out differently this time. Yet, what choice does Jonas have, other than to keep walking the same path? Bartosz and Alt Martha won’t let him settle down in the 19th century and forget about who he really is. Neither will his own conscience. And another White Devil, Old Claudia, always shows up eventually to stir the pot. Or she sends an emissary.

Katharina goes to the mental institution to look for Ulrich. She discovers that the nurse at the desk is her mother, Helene Albers. Helene is wearing the St Christopher medal that we’ve usually seen with Jonas and Martha. When Katharina asks for Ulrich and explains that he’s her husband, Helene judges Katharina for being with a patient who’s also a much older man and refuses to let her see him. Katharina uses her knowledge of the medal to talk her way in. She says that her mother also had a medal just like that. St Christopher renounced the devil and carried Jesus, the creator of the world. She begs Helene to let her see Ulrich.
Katharina describes the medal to show she’s a pious Christian, a good woman by her mother’s standards. But calling Jesus the creator of the world in that moment is an inside joke based on Ulrich’s favorite song, Pleasure to Kill by Kreator. “My only aim is to take many lives. The more the better I feel.” If I remember right, Helene never liked Ulrich. Katharina passed the favor down to Martha by pulling her away from Stranger Jonas.
Helene says that Ulrich was just released from solitary. He’s sitting at a table, playing chess by himself. Katharina sits with him. As soon as she gets his attention, she promises to break him out.
Jasmin is the last one at the power plant. She turns out the lights as she prepares to leave. The Unknown Trio turn them back on, then surround her threateningly. After confirming her identity, Adult Unknown tells her, “Hell is empty and all the devils are here.”
He shushes Jasmin, who is about 8 months pregnant, then strangles her with his garrotte.
At least he made sure to kill the correct pregnant secretary.
Jana fiddles with an ouroboros bracelet as she sits in her living room in deep thought. Tronte comes home and sits next to her. She tells him that at some point he’s going to have to choose between his family with her or Claudia. He says that he saw Regina today. She looks like a grown up. Jana remarks that Claudia has never said who Regina’s father is and she’s always wondered if it’s Tronte. Tronte doesn’t respond directly to that opening. He agrees that he has to decide between the two families and takes Jana’s hand.
It’s not hard for Tronte to choose Jana right now when Claudia has disappeared without a trace or a word. He cares even less about Regina than Claudia does, that was made clear, though we’ve never seen much evidence that he cares about Ulrich either. He imprinted on Claudia when he was young and everyone else will always come second, no matter what. We know he runs right back to her when she shows up again.
In 2020, Regina is alone and trying to sleep in the damp police station while it storms outside. Old Tronte comes in and squeezes her hand, saying, “I’m so sorry, but it has to happen. She said it’s the only way to save you.” He smothers Regina with her pillow.
Well, at least Regina’s suffering is finally over? I don’t think she ever did anything worse than say a few snappish words to the people who had done terrible things to her. And people were so awful to her. I hate the way both she and Aleksander died alone, after they were so devoted to their little family in life.
Prime Old Tronte wasn’t saved from the shockwave by any means that we saw, so how is he alive now? And did Claudia or Eva send him to kill Regina? Regina was definitely right to be nervous around him when she was young.
Back in the trailer, Peter heats up cans of soup while Eli thinks about Noah. She asks Peter what Noah said to him, but Peter refuses to tell her. She pulls out the triquetra diary, which he’s somehow held onto since season 1, and demands that he tell her more about what’s going on. They shove each other back and forth in the trailer, but not hard enough for either to get hurt.
Peter must know from the book where Franziska and Charlotte are, but he won’t tell Elizabeth, out of a misguided attempt to preserve her childhood.
Leaving her in the dark is worse than telling her a little of what he knows and turning it into a story she can handle. This is why fairy tales exist.
On September 22, 2053, Charlotte sits in the cave and looks at Elizabeth’s photo of Noah, Eli and herself as a baby. Eli returns from outside and sits next to Charlotte. Charlotte gets up to leave, maybe to take over standing watch outside the cave. Eli tells her it will be okay and they press their foreheads together.
In 1987, Young Katharina does her homework and listens to music at the kitchen table. Helene smacks her on the back of the head, hard, and in a vicious voice, tells her to clear the table.
We’ve seen Magnus smack people the same way, especially Mikkel, many times, though not as hard. This is another version of an eternal recurrence. The behaviors and personalities that recur in families down through the generations, in addition to physical similarities, become like seeing the same people and the same dynamics repeated over and over, with no exit possible other than blowing up the cycle by walking out and not reproducing.
Or going through extensive self examination and being self aware at all times, in order to avoid falling back into old patterns, as Stranger recommended. But the Faustian White Devil of similar personality types will always be there, bringing with them the temptation to revert to old patterns of behavior. Nietzsche was specifically thinking of never ending relationships with his difficult mother and sister when he worked with the ideas of the eternal recurrence and amor fati, love of fate. Dark shows these recurring behavior and thought patterns through the generations in each family cluster in Winden, even before we know that characters are related.
It’s montage time. This episode, the song is Broken Sleep, by Agnes Obel.
Adult Stranger Katharina takes her leave of Old Ulrich in the psych ward. They both have the same air of desperation about them, despite how far apart they are in age now. Ulrich’s advanced age didn’t make Katharina hesitate even for a second, after she tried so hard to keep Stranger and Martha apart.
In 2020, Prime Adult Claudia finds Regina dead in bed and is devastated. She wasn’t the one who ordered Tronte to kill her daughter.
In 1987, Young Aleksander comforts Young Regina, who misses her mother.
Adult Jana sleeps with her head on Tronte’s lap. Mads is still missing. So is Claudia. They are lost in their separate grief.
In 2020, Young Elizabeth looks at the page in her notepad that says “mom and sister cave”. Whether it was on purpose or not, Young Noah told Eli where her mom is. She’s just 33 years in the future.
Young Noah works to clear rubble out of the passage. If he can clear it out enough so that it works, Charlotte and Young Elizabeth could make contact. In his life, it’s probably not that long since he finished building the passage the first time. No wonder he seems slightly resentful.
Stranger Jonas enters Martha’s room, probably hoping to creepily watch her sleep again. She’s the wrong Martha and she’s not there, but he’s still drawn by the unbreakable tether between them.

Martha is on a field trip with Bartosz to the caves. He takes her to the Sic Mundus Temple of Doom, which has has fallen into disuse. The room that will become Adam’s study is set up as a classroom, with a triquetra knot in the place of his favorite painting. While Stranger is looking for her, she’s looking at what he’ll become.
Bartosz: “It’s like a secret society. Old Tannhaus is the only one of them left. His father was convinced he could supercede the rules of space and time. He dedicated his entire life to doing just that. And so did his son.”
Martha: “They tried to build a time machine back then?”
Bartosz: “Jonas is trying to rebuild things the way he saw them. He’s been here already. Not now. In the future. He asked you something earlier. If Adam had sent you. He said that Adam killed Martha. Who is this Adam?”
Martha: “He didn’t tell you that? He is Adam. Jonas.”
We swoop to the Alt world, where Old Eva is telling Young Jonas her truths.
Old Eva: “We don’t know our end, but our end knows us. Salvation or damnation. We can indulge in the illusion of free will if we want, but we cannot escape our ultimate destiny. The choices we make in each world may be different, but nevertheless, they converge on the same moment. Things may not happen in the same way, or at the same time. But they always happen. You believed a world without you would be a better one, but they’re all going to die. Mikkel. Mikkel will die. Everyone will die. The apocalypse occurs in my world, just as it does in yours. In mine, it will happen in 3 days time.”
But no pressure.
As they’ve been speaking, she brings him over to a family tree that’s made from stone inlays in her floor. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that even when something is literally written in stone, it isn’t always true.

Commentary
Old Eva confirms that the 2 worlds are roughly parallel, though not exact mirror images. Her world operates under the same fatalism that the Prime world is subject to, so it probably doesn’t matter whether there’s 3 years or 3 hours until the apocalypse, it can’t be stopped. Let’s get Jonas home before it hits though, ‘kay?
I know we’re working on letting go of attachments this season, but I’m pretty sure Jonas is an essential part of the symbolic balance of light and dark in this universe, so we need him, or the rainbow ponies will take over and it will be all sparkles, all the time.
Sun fairy Metamaiden asks what would be wrong with that? (She has actual rainbow hair.) I am a creature of the night okay? (How do you think I knew Jonas didn’t want to be left alone in the light?) I’m just advocating for balance here.
I’m convinced the Kahnwald house is the black hole machine that gives birth to other black holes. There’s a device hidden there that Jonas put under his bed and then forgot, 200 cycles ago, when they were all new at this. Everyone is drawn there and will eventually sleep in that bed. In fact, it’s probably the bed that’s the ORIGIN everyone is looking for. The time travel plot was hatched there, in the distant early twentieth century past, and won’t be destroyed as long as the house and the bed are standing. 😉
The school and the factory have similar silhouettes. Could the factory have been reworked into the school?
Foresight like Gustav’s is believed to be seen through the metaphysical 3rd eye, located in between the eyebrows in the lower forehead. I talked about Sic Mundus as a mystery school back in S2Ep1 & S2Ep8. Though Bartosz doesn’t characterize it that way, Gustav’s foresight firmly locates it in that arena, rather than as simply an academic and scientific endeavor.
Katharina and Ulrich have both gone about their investigations in an uncompromising way that didn’t gain them any trust from the authorities, despite the fact that they are both local authorities themselves. But it’s not like there’s a rule book to follow for losing your child to someone else in another time period or solving child murders and kidnappings by time travelers across 3 times periods.
The soldier at the checkpoint, played by Maximilian Dirr, seems familiar to me. I think he might still have been one of the guards in the 2052 episodes, but IMDB isn’t crediting him. If I notice him when I get to that point next time I rewatch, I’ll note it here. Or someone else can let me know in the comments. Maybe he was a cop or worked in the power plant.
Family Trees- Skip If You Don’t Want to Know What’s on Them Yet!
My screencap of Old Eva’s full family tree might come out too blurry to read, so I’ll add the family tree on the Netflix website for this episode, though they are a little different. If you visit the website yourself, make sure to stop on the home page first and select which episode you’re willing to be spoiled up to.

Katharina’s father is listed as Hermann Albers (Thomas Arnold), the farmer whose sheep died in S1Ep3, Past and Present. In hindsight, the death of the flock of 33 sheep and the Bible verse Albers quoted to Egon were warnings to Egon that he’d be dead soon. Albers told Egon he was a member of Noah’s church. (Mark 13:33, “Be on your guard. Be alert. For you do not know when that time will be.”)
In the same episode, Mikkel spends his first day in 1986, Claudia starts work as the director of the power plant and HG Tannhaus finishes work on the time device. It must be that once those things had happened, Egon’s future was solidified. Helene Alber’s religious medal also pegs her as a member of Noah’s church.
Old Gustav Tannhaus is HG Tannhaus‘ grandfather, with Leopold Tannhaus in between the two as Gustav’s son/HG’s father. Gustav was born in 1813 and HG was born in 1913, 100 years apart. Gustav’s father is Heinrich Tannhaus. Sic Mundus’ history stretches back as least as far as Gustav’s birth in 1813 and forward at least as far as 2053, the farthest we’ve seen anyone travel forward, a period of 250 years.
The big shocker on these trees is the pairing of Bartosz and Silja (Girl from the Future) and then them being the parents of Noah and Agnes. Agnes is Tronte’s mother and Tronte is Jonas’ great grandfather, which makes Bartosz his great great great grandfather. Silja is the child of Egon and Hannah. Agnes and the Unknown give birth to Tronte in both worlds.
So now Bartosz knows that EVEN MORE STUFF is all Jonas’ fault. That should make for some fun times ahead. Maybe Bartosz isn’t so much blaming Jonas for everything as exasperated with him, the way you get with a favorite child who just can’t stay out of trouble, no matter how hard you try to keep him safe. Bartosz wants to keep his favorite progeny alive and well and Jonas keeps screwing everything up. Bartosz also prods Jonas along his dark and uncomfortable path.
Was There Originally A Jonas in the Alt World?
It is odd that Stranger doesn’t remember going to Alt Martha’s world when he was Young Jonas. I get the distinct impression that there used to be a Jonas in Martha’s world, but he wanted to be erased. So they kept Mikkel from going back to 1986, just like Jonas wanted in the Prime world, and as Eva indicated to Prime Young Jonas. To make up for Jonas’ absence in the Alt world, they have to bring him over from the Prime world for a brief time to interact with Martha to trigger certain events.
That’s an arguable interpretation, it’s true. It’s never said straight out, but Eva has said to Jonas twice now that he wanted a world without himself, with the hope that it would be a better place, but it’s not. In this episode, she specifically said that even Mikkel dies, and as a child instead of as an adult, so there was no point to making a world without Jonas.
But she didn’t say that there had been cycles where Jonas existed as a native in the Alt world. However, the way she practically blames him suggests that the Alt world exists in its current form because some version of Jonas, either from his world or hers, talked her into trying out the “world without Jonas” concept he’s been so keen on for 2 seasons. So either he used to exist there as a native or the Prime version has been visiting there for a while and talking Eva into experimenting.
There is a 3rd option, that Jonas willed Martha’s world into existence as a place where she could live and he wouldn’t be there to kill her. It’s an attractive option. But she still goes and gets Jonas and brings him to her world in every cycle, so either Martha didn’t agree to Jonas’ plan, that’s not the correct option or Jonas just can’t be written out of Martha’s code because he’s too essential to the way her story goes. Jonas’ own story seems to require Martha at various points.
I’ll explore this more fully as the season goes on- don’t want to give away spoilers now.
But I do think Martha was always the chosen one in the Alt world, whether or not Jonas was ever native to it. That’s one reason why it didn’t make much of a difference for Jonas to disappear there.
Did Season 1 Show A 3rd World?
The way that Martha’s world reflects her personality and Jonas’ world reflects his, argues for the main actor within the world being the one who imagines/dreams/Wills the world into being, with the world following the characteristics of that person’s mind. And that makes me wonder if we’ve actually seen a different world each season. I haven’t thought it through enough to figure out whose world it would have been in season 1, but season 2 was Jonas’/Adam’s world.
Since we know we’ve seen Jonas and Martha’s worlds, I wonder if there’s something about being young that makes it easier to create the new world or connection between worlds? I think if S1 isn’t also Jonas’ world, Teen Charlotte is the best option for whose world it is. Charlotte is both the only person we know of who’s time traveled as an infant and who is connected to Tannhaus (the narrator of S1). He set the tone for the scientific understanding and the worldview of the season.
We see quite a bit of Charlotte as a teenage and an adult investigator that season and of Tannhaus in two time periods, 3 if you count his TV show. Charlotte’s daughter Elizabeth also plays a part, with Noah seeking her out and Yasin disappearing. The two of them revolve around each other exactly the same way Mikkel and Jonas do.
Or else it could be Mikkel’s world, but I feel like Mikkel has too little control. Same with Helge. It could be Claudia’s world, since she’s all about control.
Sic Mundus Creatus Est: Faust meets the Devil and a Prophet Meets a Saint
From a scientific point of view, Jonas ends up taking over Sic Mundus because he figures out the importance of their work to improving on the scientific work he’s already done with Claudia. For that reason, the scene where Bartosz introduces Alt Martha to the Sic Mundus classroom and tells us their true history for the first time is important. It shows that Sic Mundus wasn’t just a crazy cult that Adam made up to keep his followers in line or a symptom of his madness.
Instead, the organization has has a rich history of scholarship and alchemy created by multiple generations of researchers who devoted their lives to the work. Jonas/Adam learned from this history to create his own version of Sic Mundus, which added elements to the overall time travel scheme that were missing from the approach based purely on scientific theory. HG Tannhaus eventually stored some of the sources Sic Mundus studied in his clock shop along with the Sic Mundus group photo, suggesting that elements were incorporated into the version of time travel that worked. Tannhaus’ ideas were largely based on Einstein, but even Einstein couldn’t solve everything.
This is the prophecy Sic Mundus lives by in the future versions of the organization that we’ve seen, including Adult Elizabeth and Teen Silja in the 2050s: Forsake family ties in favor of the Paradise Sic Mundus will create, with Jonas as the savior. In Paradise, all of the suffering will have been worth it, because the suffering will be reversed, as if it never existed, and more.
Stranger Jonas fought for decades to avoid becoming Adam, to avoid becoming the leader who believed in and led others to believe in this prophecy, yet now he’s falling into the trap that he knows will lead him there, based on promises he swore he’d never listen to.
What changed? Why is this temptation ensnaring him now, when it never has before?
His frame of mind has changed. Emotionally and mentally, he’s been pushed beyond anywhere even he’s been before. His last chance to save original Martha, the one he spent 33 years pinning his hopes on, has failed. He’s stuck in the 19th century, helpless. Or maybe hiding. He really hasn’t been honest about his full history with the teens.
This episode is notable for how exhausted so many of the characters look. Everyone is tired of the fight right now, and Stranger is not only tired, he’s more hopeless than he’s been since he had to send Mikkel back to 1986 and Michael to his death.
He doesn’t have the strength to push down what his heart wants anymore. He wants to believe what Gustav said: that Paradise is possible and that free will isn’t. That it’s preordained he’ll succeed, so he will. That he’s always given in to the lure of Sic Mundus, so he might as well do so again.
Stranger needs some kind of relief and religious conversion can be an incredibly soothing drug.
Jonas has met his White Devil, and the devil told him he’s the savior who can bring about Paradise. Up until this point, Jonas has always believed that change was possible through his own sheer determination or Claudia’s science and plans or Adam’s authority and knowledge of the future. Here in 1888, as far as he can tell, that all lies in ruins at his feet. He’s failed; he’s been betrayed; the very universe is working against him.
Maybe it’s time to make a deal with the devil and study the occult/alchemy seriously. Maybe science isn’t enough and the missing ingredient can be found there.
Jonas has fought a mighty struggle for more than 30 years, which probably should qualify him for sainthood. Most saints have these sorts of relapses into doubt and despair, then find their strength again, even Jesus. Especially saints who mostly go it alone and live in their own heads, like Stranger.
In this sense, he’s not really a classic Faustian character. Claudia and Ulrich, the 2 White Devils from S2Ep7, the episode of the same title, are much more like the classic Faust, the character who can’t resist following their Will and Desires and so is easy prey for the Devil.
Ulrich is the classic Faustian sensualist with a heart of gold, who we root for but who just can’t stop himself from following his big heart into the next barrel of trouble he’s attracted to, whether it’s a new woman or thinking he can save the children. He’s a boy who will never grow up and we love him for the innocence at the center of his mistakes, even though eventually he becomes too toxic to live with, since he never stops to consider the consequences of his actions. The devil promises him he can be a hero or be a king, but he’s always eventually the architect of his own demise because he can’t control his tendency toward excess.
Claudia’s Deadly Sin of choice is ambition, in the form of scientific advancement at any cost. Literally any cost, whether it’s her child or her soul. Or anyone else’s soul. Since Goethe’s Faust was a sheltered academic who left his books behind to gain experience of the world and was then burned by falling in love and getting an unmarried woman, Gretchen, pregnant, Claudia is probably meant to be a combination of the Devil, Gretchen and Faust.
One of the important implications of Goethe’s Faust is the concept of earning salvation vs escaping damnation. Though characters ostensibly are meant to use their lives accruing points that will send them in one direction or the other, in the end, God acts as a referee with veto power. He can use His Grace to do whatever He wants with the characters. If He decides He likes their style, or their deathbed conversion, no matter how they’ve behaved previously, He can pick them up and bring them into Heaven. Or He can send them in the other direction. Christianity has a lot of loopholes and God is fickle.
Personally, I’m going to stick with karma/eternal justice.
Ulrich is the King David model of Faust, God’s chosen one who’ll always be forgiven eventually. Jonas is more in the tradition of Job, where God makes a bet to see how far He can push someone before they crack. Claudia is a version of Eve, who won’t stop until she’s eaten all of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and ruined Paradise for everyone. God sets her up for both great success and great pain, for His own reasons.
Martha is a saint, the opposite of a Faust. We were told this from the moment we met her in S1Ep1, when she was on a hunger strike to save starving children. Same with Noah. Everything he’s done has been for his family and he’s suffered terribly because of it. Martha is a compassionate saint and Noah is a martyred saint. Those are two ways to transcend to a higher plane of existence, which is why saints can perform miracles. Mikkel also martyred himself for his family and the greater good.
A lifelong sinner who repents and redirects that energy toward God also becomes a saint. This is the reason God loves to make bets with the Devil. It builds up karmic energy, which eventually creates a surge in one direction or the other. This will be true of any unbalanced life, whether it leans too far toward good or evil, saint or sinner. In Dark, Time is God, so the build up of karmic energy and the surge of it seeking eternal justice at death will affect Time.
Martha and Jonas are tied together to balance each other as light and dark, care for the individual (he saves those closest to him) vs care for the greater good (she saves the planet) and hope (she finds comfort in myth, stories that prove she’s never alone) vs nihilism (he’s always a stranger, always alone). Claudia is a third element, the neutral, unstoppable centerpoint of the will, which assumes it’s balance, but is merely unfeeling.
S1 can be read as Part 1 of Goethe’s Faust and S2&3 can be read as Part 2, but I’m not going to do a close examination. Part 2 is also a blatant rip off of Dante’s Divine Comedy and I’d rather just discuss that source, even though it’s not German. I have no trouble with the many other versions of Faust, and there are many, from the original 1580s religious commentaries, which are fascinating, to Pinocchio, which most everyone knows in some form, but was originally written as a novel in 1883. Goethe’s version of Faust is based on so much misogyny that my brain forms a protective wall and won’t let me take it in too deeply.
If you want to look more closely at the ties between Goethe’s Faust and Dark, here are a few links:

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” -Shakespeare and Adult Unknown
This is a quote from Shakespeare’s The Tempest which is relayed secondhand to a deposed king. While the surface meaning of the quote is obvious, the nuances of what it means coming from Unknown’s mouth as he kills a very pregnant secretary depend on which character you take to be the true author of the words.
The original speaker was a prince who was leaping from a ship that was burning because it had been set on fire to gain revenge on the king, his father, who was on board. Prince Ferdinand had nothing to do with his father’s crimes. Unknown is sympathizing with the fact that Jasmin herself is largely outside of the Winden social circle that’s involved with time travel conspiracies. She’s collateral damage. (As far as we know.)
But in the play, the audience hears the line spoken by Ariel, a magical being, who relays it to the former king, Prospero, the brother of the current king, Alonso. Many years ago, Alonso betrayed Prospero and drove him from his kingdom. Ariel reluctantly works for Prospero, who is also a magician, in return for his freedom from an evil sorceress, Sycorax. Prospero ordered Ariel to set fire to the ship in order to wreck it and bring its occupants to Prospero’s new island so that the former king can carry out an elaborate revenge plot.
Coming from Ariel, the line applies to just about everyone.
In the play, Ariel is the symbol of justice personified, much as I have compared Unknown to Schopenhauer’s Eternal Justice or karma. Unknown’s use of Ariel’s line suggests that he is aware that he is playing the role of both Eternal Justice and Prince Ferdinand, rather than blindly following orders or randomly perpetrating acts of violence.
Prince Ferdinand becomes the love interest for Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, who speaks the famous phrase, “brave new world”. From the close up on Eva’s family tree we know that Unknown is Tronte’s father in both worlds, making him part of the Nielsen line and the only one who spans the two worlds. Prince Ferdinand and Miranda’s pairing helps bring the two warring kings back together, which means that Ferdinand also acts as a bridge between kingdoms.
Ariel has worked for two powerful masters and also has his own power. Both masters have been dubious, but Ariel has chosen to stay with Prospero. I believe Unknown has ties to both Claudia and Martha. When this scene occurs, he’s just watched the Prime world go through an apocalypse which helped either created martha’s world, created a link to it or solidified the link to it. An apocalypse is about to occur in the Alt world.
Ariel has watched Sycorax perform evil acts, and now is watching Prospero risk lives for his own purposes. This is another layer to Unknown’s use of the quote. Is he expressing despair that he has to watch these apocalypses occur, but can’t stop them? Is he, like Jonas, trapped in this never ending loop of of death and loss that has to be repeated every cycle and he can’t get out of it?
There are several potential reasons why someone might want Jasmin dead. For one thing, there’s the bootstrap paradoxes. Those have been created over time by erasing the causative events and memories, so that only results remain. Both Jasmin and Bernd were instrumental in providing Claudia with the information she needed to figure out the complete theory behind the God particle, which she and Jonas then used to turn the God particle into a time machine.
In the scene where Jasmin dies, she walks in on the Unknown examining the binder which held Claudia’s early research into the God particle. This is the binder which was originally handed to Claudia by Bernd when he gave her the data related to the accident at the power plant in 1986.
Claudia first discovered financial discrepancies in the power plant’s books thanks to obscure records which Jasmin obtained for her. Jasmin looked over the records as well and noted the issues. Bernd told Claudia that the plant was cooking the books to hide the accident, then Claudia demanded to see the records of the accident.
Unknown takes the binder with him and kills the two people who know about the data trail. Is he trying to erase the memory of the origin of the God particle in future cycles? Is he stopping someone else from investigating in the future?
Or maybe there was some reason why Jasmin’s baby couldn’t be born? She’s always at the power plant- maybe she knew too much in other ways, as well?
The deaths of Jasmin, her baby, and Bernd, along with the destruction of the abandoned Sic Mundus lair, all in 1987, must be part of some larger plan.
I was struck by how exhausted and ragged the Unknown look in this scene. This is hard on the Child and Old versions, especially, as it should be.

The Day the Earth Stood Still- The Science
youtube
According to those tenacious French researchers, the Earth stopped spinning for a nanosecond during the shockwave, which is 1 billionth of a second, then started spinning again.
The video above is the best explanation I could find for what would happen if the Earth stopped spinning, but it describes what would happen if the world just stops cold and never restarts. It’s more catastrophic than what would happen, though the basic process is the same and I think we’d all still be very dead eventually in reality.
The video goes on to discuss some fascinating concepts of time, such how atomic clocks measure time and the fact that all sorts of things affect the speed at which the Earth rotates, so it’s not an accurate way to measure time. Did you know the Earth is turning more slowly as time goes on? We’ve lost more than 20 seconds since the 70s. Time is relative.
The show listed just about all of the apocalypses- tidal waves, earthquakes, hurricanes and other intense storms, electromagnetic pulse, all of the planes crashing at once, all of the nuclear power plants melting down at once. They didn’t list war, plague and famine, but those sometimes take a few months to develop in the aftermath of the other disasters. If they showed us the world outside of Winden in 2025, it would be filled with disease, hunger and people fighting over the few resources that are left.
My best guess is that the tiny lack of movement when the Earth stopped for a nanosecond, combined with intense inertia causing everything possible to move a teeny tiny bit, would create small, hairline cracks in everything that was attached to the Earth’s surface. As the Earth restarted, then continued to move, those cracks would grow, and things would crumble and fall even worse than they normally would in the resulting tidal waves, earthquakes and storms.
This video goes on to discuss some fascinating concepts of time, such as atomic clocks and the fact that all sorts of things affect the speed at which the Earth rotates, so it’s not an accurate way to measure time. Did you know the Earth is turning more slowly all the time? We’ve lost more than 20 seconds since the 70s. Time is relative.
Also we are such a nerd family that we had loud disagreements about the theoretical physics of this. Don’t ask.
This is the result of my husband the mathematician’s calculations on the issue. Despite the way he wrote it, I am the practical catastrophist in the family who believes the apocalypse is always nigh and should be prepared for. He is the theorist who never believes there will be damage in the real world. Metamaiden is the balanced middle.
Since the speed of Earth’s rotation varies based on latitude, I chose the latitude of the city of Weimar in central Germany, which is at about 51 degrees north.  Earth’s rotational speed at that latitude is 655 miles per hour, or 1,054 kilometers per hour, or 293 meters per second (calculated at https://www.vcalc.com/wiki/MichaelBartmess/Rotational+Speed+at+Latitude).
That means the Earth’s surface would move 293 nanometers (billionths of a meter) in the nanosecond that the Earth stopped.  That’s about a thousand times the diameter of a water molecule (0.27 nanometers), and about 29 times the diameter of PG5, the largest synthetic molecule ever made (10 nanometers).  Depending on how closely packed together two substances are, that 293 nanometers of travel could provide plenty of room for the molecules of one substance (say, water) to smack into the molecules of the other substance (say, rock) in that billionth of a second, potentially triggering havoc.
As more comparison, the width of a human hair is 75,000 nanometers. 293 nanometers, the distance inertia would shift everything on Earth when it stopped, whether it was attached or not, is so small it’s hard to imagine, but it’s enough to throw off cycles, set off chain reactions and fracture inflexible masses when done with the weight and velocity of the Earth behind it.
The Day the Earth Stood Still- The Film
Tumblr media
They are definitely referencing the film.
In this short documentary, Decoding Klaatu Barada Nikto, the filmmakers and others discuss how The Day the Earth Stood Still purposely relates to the Cold War, fear of nuclear proliferation and and the pro United Nations sentiments of the filmmakers. Dark has spent 3 seasons showing us how a group of people who were interested in traveling to other times and to other timelines/worlds will stop at nothing, not even global mass destruction and death involving all of the apocalypses at once, to achieve their scientific goals. And nuclear science is at the heart of what they do.
The Day the Earth Stood Still believes scientists, with the help of the UN, can save the world. Dark seems to be saying we can’t trust the scientists anymore. Unless the message is that the scientists will take us to the golden glitter Harry Potter world, which I’m totally okay with. But that world is threatened, too, so it’s not the ultimate answer. The science and technology that came out of the Enlightenment and have continued through the Industrial Revolution to the present day, which are seen as both progress which will unquestioningly aid humanity and as beneficial knowledge which must be pursued, have led to many of the ills our culture and planet now face.
Unless we somehow put the brakes on- stop the world- the apocalypses we currently live in will only get worse. As I write this, it’s currently 102ºF (39ºC) outside my window, there is smoke in the air from the forest fires that are burning all over the Southwestern US, including one about 20 miles from my home, and my state diagnosed a record number of COVID-19 cases yesterday. That’s 3 apocalypses. Famine from joblessness isn’t far behind. How many riots and shootings does it take to make a civil war?
We need to start getting the message and acting on it without worrying about the details.
Which brings me to the importance of the code phrases. Klaatu Barada Nikto is a code phrase which the alien, Klaatu, his human friend, Helen, say to his robot guardian after he’s killed, to stop the guardian from destroying Earth in retaliation. It tells the robot that the damage done to the alien is repairable by their standards, so the situation can still be salvaged. But no direct translation for the phrase was ever written into the script or otherwise. It’s been left to the viewer to interpret the exact meaning, though the gist of it is clear. Fans have obsessed over its exact meaning for decades and even the cast and crew all have slightly different interpretations.
The important thing about the phrase Klaatu Barada Nikto is that it triggered the correct state of mind and action in Klaatu’s robot, Gort. The meaning helps trigger Gort’s action, and it’s extremely important that Gort understand the message correctly, so it’s worth analyzing, but on the level of meaning, not exact wording. Having an exact direct translation might help us, but isn’t essential for Gort or Helen, who brings him the message in the film.
In the same way, the characters in Dark are triggering each other with certain words and phrases. Sometimes the meaning matters, but I don’t think it always does. Sometimes just the sound of the words acts as a reminder to their inner selves of where they are in the cycle and what the next step is. Many of them are following difficult paths and want out, while at the same time their memories are being erased to form the bootstrap paradoxes. They need nudges along the way to keep them following the same footsteps they’ve created in previous cycles.
Are the bootstrap paradoxes a reference to the way history tends to be forgotten in the real world, so that we are condemned to repeat it endlessly, never correcting our mistakes, repeating the same platitudes and religious doctrines to justify our actions?

Chapter 53. Dust and Smiles
When I lived in Scotland I missed the sun dearly. Sunny days were treasured, and I found myself smiling without any particular reason when the sunlight snuck between the curtains of my room in the morning.
But sometimes a person can have too much sun. And too much dust stuck to their body. And there is a point when you think of rain and realise a wistful smile has appeared on your face at the thought. It’s the same moment you realise there isn’t an inch of your body not coated in grime.
I reached that exact point on a quiet afternoon in June, two weeks before I left Zambia. Some would say it had taken me long enough.
I was left alone after treating the skin wounds of a couple of five-year-old boys that had gone out ‘to explore’. Their little feet had raised tons of dust as they ran away from the clinic and the first thing that came to my mind was that I was extremely tired of washing my hair every night only to feel it dirty again by noon the following day.
Then, just before the boys disappeared out of sight, one of them turned back to look at me, white teeth stark against his dark skin as he smiled, and waved goodbye.
And suddenly, I didn’t mind the dust that much. I didn’t mind the heat, or how heavy my body felt at the end of each shift. All that mattered was their smiles when they left the clinic.
My three months in Zambia were so full of experiences, I could hardly believe it hadn’t lasted longer. I learned how to talk to people who were in pain, how to heal them or -- when this was impossible -- how to make them feel better. I learned to listen to them, to search their eyes, to read their discomfort or pain in the way they moved. And I learned how a single smile can make your day, how two skinny arms wrapped around your body or two warm hands holding yours can fill your heart to the brim.
Spending my childhood with Lamb, I was used to living amongst people who were different from me. He’d taught me to look at people and see them for all they were. Humans. Different, beautiful, every one a worthy individual.
“All people are the same,” Lamb used to say. “All genuine smiles make the eyes crinkle, all hearts beat in the same way inside our chests, not aware of colour or tribe.”
In Africa, I saw life, and I saw death. I saw the universality of pain. I felt hands squeezing mine in terror and in gratitude. And I felt full. I felt alive.
When I first decided to volunteer I had thought I would find a piece of my mother in Africa. I believed I would discover who she had been, what she had pursued in life. I didn’t. And I wasn’t disappointed, because I had found a piece of myself in the faces I met in Livingstone, and I cherished that. And maybe -- just maybe -- that piece of myself was hers. Passed down to me, together with her amber eyes, an unbreakable part of myself.
Being a volunteer had been a full time job -- and a demanding one at that. But I didn’t want to leave, not yet. I had more to give, there were people here who needed me. But I knew that my time was up. In two weeks, I would feel Scottish air against my skin once more. I would feel Lamb’s arms hugging me for a few extended moments before he would push away to look into my eyes and pet my hair the way he always did. And a week later, I would be at Lallybroch. Jenny had asked -- demanded, actually -- to spend a week or two there. She had enough of the men, she had said when we’d texted. And true to her word to her brother, she had sent me pictures of the estate, in full bloom and beauty.
Jamie would come home after the summer term. We would spend two weeks together before his next term began and I would go to Oxford. To Oxford, where -- unexpectedly -- I would find a familiar face.
Robert.
He had been different since his personal confession. His arrogance and cheeky comments hadn’t abated, but there wasn’t an edge to his voice anymore. It felt as though he needed someone to know his story, even if that someone wasn’t a friend, even if it was just me. He clammed up after that and never talked about his mother again, apart from the time he’d told me it was her wish that had brought him to Zambia as a volunteer.
We started, however, talking about literature. One evening I found him reading that fantasy book I had finished a few months ago. And when the conversation turned to our future plans after Zambia, he had looked down at me with a smirk and proudly announced that he had been admitted to Oxford University. I’d almost spit my pineapple juice out and onto his face. After that, our expectations and dreams of studying at Oxford became the most common topic of our discussions. Robert would be studying economics, expected to inherit and work in his father’s wine business in Provence. That was a relief. The last thing I wanted was to have the self-centered, competitive French on my heels through medical school. From what I had learned about him in the few months we lived together, he didn’t like being bested by anyone. And neither did I.
Jamie was the first to know I had found a fellow Oxford student in the middle of Africa. He and I had been texting and sending photos all the time, and I kept changing my screen background, choosing the funniest of the pictures he sent me. My favorite picture of him though, was the one he had sent me right after I arrived in Zambia. He was wearing a wide, silly grin as he sat in the bleachers of Michigan Stadium, my Wolverine amongst the blue and yellow sea of other students. He had sent it together with a text, shouting, “MY FIRST SPRING GAME!”
Boys.
Despite the selfies Jamie sent me every day -- in class, on his way there, before training holding the towel I had bought him, or tucked in with his blanket at night in bed, my favorite part of the week was when I saw him during our calls every weekend. I was always trying to take in every detail of him during our video chats -- his beautiful eyes, the way his curls moved as he excitedly gesticulated, his voice.
I missed him and I knew he missed me too. Even when John was present in their dorm and Jamie wouldn’t say it, his longing was obvious in the way he looked at me.
Two weeks and I would be at Lallybroch, in Jamie’s room. It made no sense for me to fly straight to Michigan with Jamie having his final classes and preparing to sit for his spring term exams. I had looked for tickets to visit him right after the exams, but the fares were too high to even consider it.
We had agreed that it was not the ideal situation but okay nonetheless. We would survive it. At least, once I was back in Scotland, we would be able to call each other every day. As John had said, laughing, the force of the internet would be with us.
Jamie would come home at the end of August, after his summer term, and we would be at Lallybroch together, spending every single minute with each other.
“We have to make up for so much lost time,” Jamie had said to me during our last call, and the glint in his eye was as terrifying as it was exhilarating.
A text on my phone brought me out of my reverie and I realised that I was still standing under the sun, alone, looking towards the far end of the road.
I found myself doing that a lot lately.
Scot: John’s cousin is a pain in the ass.
Sassenach: Hello to you, too.
Scot: Hi babe. John’s cousin is a pain in the ass. She called him, woke us up, and she demands that we pick her up from her hotel and show her around.
Sassenach: Well, she came to visit. Makes sense, no?
Scot: It. Is. Too. Early.
Sassenach: It’s 1 pm here!
Scot: You’re not helping. It’s 7 in the morning. Maybe I can send her there, then?
Sassenach: Is that the cocky cousin or the nice one? I doubt they’ll like the dust we have here, in any case.
Scot: The cocky one. Can I come there myself? Please?
Sassenach: Why aren't you on your way, already? :P
Scot: Don’t tempt me.
Sassenach: I don’t have anything to do right now.
Scot: We didn’t send you there to relax under the sun, Sassenach. Get that gorgeous round arse to work.
Sassenach: It seems I’ve healed all of Zambia.
Scot: So humble.
Sassenach: Always. I took lessons from the best.
Scot: Fuck you.
Sassenach: What? Since when are you talking like that? I need a selfie to make sure it’s really you.
I spent a whole minute wishing his selfie to load faster, but I ended up with a sleepy Jamie on my screen, which was worth the wait.
Sassenach: So it is you. These Americans are rubbing off on you, no? AND I DON’T MEAN IT LITERALLY. Also, fucking seems a bit difficult right now, seeing as you’re half a planet away.
Scot: But I’m ready, you know, right now.
I could almost see his pout and the challenge in his eyes when I closed my own, and I felt my cheeks turn red.
Sassenach: Okay. Shut up!
Scot: DAMN WAIT TILL I SEE YOU AGAIN. JUST WAIT.
Sassenach: Oh I’m looking forward to that.
Scot: Aaaaargh
Sassenach: Eloquent. Now get dressed, go get John and Hector, and show the girl around. She came all the way from Penrith to see Ann Arbor.
Scot: I just don’t get why I have to go, too.
Sassenach: John is your friend. This is what friends do. I spent all Saturday afternoon shopping with Louise.
Scot: I hate you.
Sassenach: Me too. Send me pictures?
Scot: Always. You too. Actually, I need one right now.
I took a picture of my dirty dusted face and sent it to him, grimacing when I saw how sloppy I looked.
Scot: You’re so tanned, I want to lick you.
Sassenach: Believe me you don’t. I’m dirty.
Scot: DIRTY? OMG STOP TALKING. I’m hard already and I have to get dressed.
Sassenach: You are ridiculous. Have I ever told you that?
Scot: Only a million times.
Sassenach: Good!
Scot: I’m going to take a cold shower AND CERTAINLY NOT THINK OF YOU.
Sassenach: I wish I was there with you.
Sending that, I actually snickered. His reply came in milliseconds.
Scot: You are a heartless, dangerous woman.
Sassenach: And yet you love me. Now go shower.
Scot: I do love you. And I’ll prove to you how much once I get my hands on you, you tease. Ttyl!
Raising my eyes from the screen, I saw Louise looking at me.
“You know I can tell when you’re texting Jamie, from that silly smile on your face?” she asked, keeping her arms crossed in front of her chest as if judging me.
“What can I do?” I didn’t try to hide my smile. “I found myself a good one.”
Louise nodded and came to stand next to me. A moment later a heavy sigh left her lips, and I noticed the shadows in her eyes. “Margaret was crying again. I tried to talk to her, but she won’t listen. She’s leaving next week and she doesn’t want to go back.”
“Makes sense.” Louise’s mood had been bad the last few days. “The moment she’ll be back, she’ll have to deal with reality. He won’t be there, and there will be no way to escape.”
“She keeps talking in her sleep. She’s having weird dreams, you know.” Louise twisted her rings absentmindedly, not looking at me.
“I know. I woke her last night because she was murmuring and thrashing about. Jeremy was awake too, and we kept her company until she was settled again.”
“I’m sorry to see her go, especially knowing she’s still so unstable. I think her family isn’t supportive and that terrifies her even more.”
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Two of the volunteers I got to know had come to Zambia carrying a great emotional load and needing a chance to escape. They were trying to heal themselves through healing the others. The universality of pain, all over again.
“Charlie called me.” Louise changed the subject, this time with a smile. “He said he misses me.” She rubbed her hands against her thighs, awkwardly, but met my eyes when I turned to look at her.
“Rather convenient, wouldn’t you say? Seeing as you’re going back home next week.”
“Not all of us are strong, Claire.” Her voice was harsh and I bit my lip, regretting being so straightforward.
“You know better, I guess.”
Louise sighed again. “I wish I did, actually. I don’t know what to do when I get back to Paris.”
I placed my hand on top of her shoulder and squeezed lightly. “You don’t need to decide right now. You can meet him, see what he has to say, how he’ll explain himself.”
Louise nodded, sleek brown locks of hair escaping her loose ponytail. “I wish we were as strong as you and Jamie are. Everything would be simpler.”
“Well, it’s not like everything comes easy and we don’t try at all. We’ve just decided that being together matters the most, and we’re not sacrificing what we have just because we’re not close. We’re both stubborn and it helps -- thus far, at least.”
My phone vibrated against my leg, and I unlocked it to see a picture of Jamie and John rolling their eyes, and a girl in the background.
Sassenach: Out, already?
Scot: Yeap. She’s fourteen but she’s so bossy I think John is afraid of her.
Sassenach: And you?
Scot: I’m being a good friend, as I was advised to be. I already regret it.
Sassenach: Where are you?
Scot: Out for breakfast. She had the longest order I’ve heard in my whole life. She actually ordered something from the menu and then changed every little bit of it. It was embarrassing.
Sassenach: Leave a good tip.
Scot: We will! Hector turned red as she kept going on and gave the waitress a shy smile.
Sassenach: I wish I was there, sitting at another table just to make fun of the three of you.
Scot: Believe me, babe, if you were here I’d sit right next to you at a table in another cafe.
Sassenach: Drama queen.
Scot: You haven’t met wee Geneva yet.
Sassenach: How come she visited without her parents?
Scot: They had promised her this trip if her grades were good. They were. She’s really smart, actually. It makes her more of a pain in the ass.
Sassenach: Maybe the three of you can teach her something, you know? Humility, for example.
Scot: Not a chance.
I stuck my tongue out, took a selfie and sent it.
Scot: Don’t you show me that tongue because I have dreams about it. And I hope you’re there alone.
Sassenach: I’m with Louise! She says hi!
Scot: Hello Louise! Take care of Claire for me, okay?
Sassenach: You realise I’m still the one reading the texts, right?
Scot: Just read that one aloud.
Sassenach: I’m capable of taking care of myself, thank you.
Scot: I know. My strong and stubborn lass. John looks desperate and Hector is huffing. I’m going to save them from their misery because I’m a good friend.
Sassenach: The best! Go save them, my gallant lad!
I huffed a laugh and turned my focus back to Louise. “It was quiet today.”
“Mmmm.” Her eyes were closed, her face relaxed under the sun.
“Whatever happens with Charlie, you’re going to be fine,” I said, using my most reassuring tone.
“Mmmm.”
I decided to join her and close my eyes for a bit, but an elderly woman and her daughter came into view. “Well, don’t blame me for that,” I murmured and nudged Louise, who opened her eyes, saw the patients, and shot me an accusing glance.
“Hello,” she said as she turned back to the women, and we both rose from the bench.
Who knew what waited for us once we got back to normalcy. For now, we had work to do.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man 06: The Doctor’s Dilemma – by Danny Fingeroth
Tumblr media
An unexpected gem!
Dr. Bromwell grabs Peter by the arm and tells him he must talk to him about "his double life." But Bromwell hasn't stumbled on Pete's secret identity. He's talking about the dangers Pete gets into as a Daily Bugle photographer. He asks Peter, for May's sake, to give up the job. Although Peter has worried about the dangers himself, he stiffs Bromwell, saying "I'd appreciate it if you'd mind your own business, Doctor." Regretting every word, Peter goes into an unfair critique of Bromwell and a defense of his photography work. Taken aback, Bromwell gives Pete a new prescription for May and heads toward the door. Peter calls him back and apologizes. He tells him he has considered the dangers but still thinks the reward is worth the risk. Once Bromwell leaves, Peter changes to Spider-Man, eventually web-swinging to the pharmacy to fill May's prescription.
Back at his office, Bromwell can't stop thinking about Peter. Suddenly, he gets a brainstorm. He wants to give Peter a job in the sciences instead. First he goes to Metro Hospital and talks to Dr. Gordon, who saved May's life after Spider-Man brought in the needed ISO-36 (in Amazing Spider-Man #33, February 1966). Gordon reveals that, shortly after Spidey left, a beaten and bruised Peter appeared. Bromwell doesn't know what kind of deal Peter has with Spider-Man but he suspects the web-slinger is taking advantage of him.
Out web-slinging, Spidey comes upon "an eight-foot tall, four-foot wide gent in the green spandex suit" who is trashing an armored car. He is also "amazingly fast and as strong as the Hulk." When Spidey asks for a name, the giant comes up with "Impact," revealing that he volunteered for an experiment involving radioactive steroids (a combination just asking for trouble) for which he never got paid. Now paying himself in his own way, Impact slams Spidey against a wall and escapes.
The next day, Bromwell makes a house call and finds Peter all battered and bruised. He offers Pete a job in his own office helping with his research and lab work. Peter accepts. Aunt May overhears this conversation and is wracked with guilt for letting Peter risk his life taking pictures simply because they desperately needed the money.
So, Peter goes to work for Bromwell. There he researches steroids and finds out that Impact is Walter Cobb, a family man whose mind was warped by the experiment. As the days go by, Peter works at Bromwell's office, just missing catching up to Impact at his various crime scenes. Finally, Bromwell is called to the ER to help treat some victims of Impact's latest assault. As he leaves, Bromwell asks Peter to not go out for news photos. But Peter has to go out to stop Impact. Arriving at the scene,he finds Impact holding two hostages. The police bring out Impact's wife and kids to plead with him. It appears to work, with Impact releasing his hostages. Peter starts imagining a day when his work with Bromwell will lead to greater things than his web-swinging. Then a shot rings out and Impact goes on the rampage again. Spidey tries to calm him but he is too far gone. After pounding on the wall-crawler for a bit, Impact collapses. Bromwell is on the scene and pronounces the giant dead. As Spidey swings home, he reflects on it all. "Bromwell tells me that I should think about my aunt – like I don't do that enough. Impact shows me that there's a right way and a wrong way to try to help those you love. All these lessons! But...what am I supposed to learn from them? Where's the curriculum? Where's the syllabus?"
A great ending, right? But, oops, there's more! On his way home, Peter realizes that he could be as dead as Impact and decides to give up the webs. But at dinner, Aunt May tells him to keep doing what he's doing if it's what he wants to do. The next day, Bromwell waves the Daily Bugle at Peter, indicating the front page photo Pete took, and tells him he let him down, abandoning his lab work for the very work he begged him to avoid. He tells Peter that he has done all he can and that he's letting him go from his job. Pete can tell that Bromwell is hoping he will ask for another chance but Peter doesn't. He has come to completely understand that he does not become Spidey for thrills but to help people and that Uncle Ben and Aunt May would approve if they knew. Or, as he puts it, "Love the power. Guess I'll just have to live with the responsibility."
Had you told me that a Spidey story (and a prose story at that) about Doc Bromwell witten by Danny Fingeroth was going to be cracking I’d have never believed you.
Fingeroth’s body of Spidey work is a mixed bag to put it kindly. This is the man who wrote arguably the single best page of Mary Jane ever in Web of Spider-Man #6, eloquently summing up her emotional conflict regarding her romantic feelings for Spidey. But this is also the man who editorially mandated the creation of Maximum Carnage.
And yet here he doesn’t make a single misstep.
Okay that isn’t exactly true. His opening narration makes Peter sounds like a goddam psychopath. “Love the power. Hate the responsibility.” Er….that’s not exactly true, Peter has moments of enjoyment of his power and frustrations over the burdens it places upon him. But he doesn’t truly revel in his power and typically treats his responsibilities as simply something that HAS to be done moreso than something he resents doing. But that’s nothing compared to “…to take what I need. And to make anybody who gets in my way real sorry they got there.”
WTF dude! I was half expecting that the twist here was going to be that this wasn’t Peter speaking but it was. Fingeroth nicely bookends these sentiments by the end of the story but that doesn’t change the fact those sentiments shouldn’t be there in the first place.
You can maybe just handwave this as Peter being in a really bad mood and not believing what he is thinking. But I dunno, I suspect the real intent here was to clumsily set up something to BE bookended by the end of the story and more poignantly to smack the readers in the face with the central theme of the story. This lack of subtly rears its head again towards the end of the story when Fingeroth seriously spells out for us that Impact is a dark reflection of Spider-Man and the exact ways how. Everything the dialogue says is correct and Impact is actually a very good reflection of Spidey. But couldn’t Fingeroth have been a tad more subtle about it?
But other than that this story unto itself is pretty much flawless. I say unto itself because through no fault of Fingeroth the story’s placement withint he anthology is kind of weird. It clearly takes place after ASM #33 as there are very direct references and fallout from the Master Planner Trilogy. However the nature of the story also makes it highly unlikely to take place after ASM #39 because in that issue Peter is shaken by Bromwell informing him of just how frail Aunt May is. He pretty much tells Peter that if May learns his secret she will keel over dead. So this happens between ASM #33 and #39 but the Looter story clearly happens after ASM #36. Whilst far from inconceivable that this story could happen afterwards, because the last story with the Goblin was obviously tipping the hat to ASM #39-40 this story would’ve been better placed just before the Looter story. As is it’s oddly the THIRD story in this book to take place in this extremely small and specific gap of time after ASM #36 but before ASM #39.
Enough of the nitpicks though. I said this story was a gem and I stand by that.
What pleasantly surprised me most about this story was that Fingeroth seemed to be able to handle the prose format better than every other writer thus far sans perhaps DeFalco.
He wisely knows to emphasis the inner conflicts within the characters’ heads and play up the soap opera rather than leaning in on the action setpieces.
And yet there are two significant action set pieces in this story. Indeed the crux of the whole story REVOLVES around the physical danger Peter puts himself in by going into action. Fingeroth handled these deftly. The action wasn’t over explained and painted a clear picture in your head but didn’t linger too much. Sure you might feel things would be more interesting if you could actually see things but you aren’t drifting off as the writer belabors the combination of punches and kicks Spidey lands. It’s all very streamlined and designed to support the emotional arc of the story as opposed to the action being the point unto itself or simply the means to REACH a conclusion.
In this regard Fingeroth actually edges out DeFalco. Reading/listening through DeFalco’s story the action scenes can just be boiled down to Spidey fights some thugs, drags out the fight for pictures and then one them accidentally dies the specifics don’t matter even though we do get them.
Here Fingeroth forgoes the specifics to simply give you the broad beats to the fight (Impact throws a car, Spidey webs people to safety, etc) whilst ensuring he returns to Spidey’s inner thoughts and peppering in dialogue that is moving the plot and exploring the themes, even if it is simply lightly.
In a way this is a rare example of an action set piece that works BETTER in prose than it would visually. Sure Mark Bagley or Ron Frenz could embellish the fight scene to make it look cool, but the visions of a possible future Peter imagines are more potent and organic when we simply read his train of thought like this. Were it a comic such dialogue would come off as excessive or (if communicated through art) needlessly existential. Additionally as a villain goes Impact is fairly generic, but having him not have any visual presence mitigates that because his importance is more about what he is doing and why than having a dynamic appearance.
To go back to Bromwell, he’s developed more here than he’s been in over 55 years of Spider-History. Were he written like this in his appearances he might’ve become a more beloved character. What’s great is how organic his personality feels. We learn new stuff about him but it feels like a totally logical extrapolation of what little we saw of him in the 1960s. He is a quintessential doctor and Fingeroth lends him a surprising amount of nuance. He isn’t endlessly caring, he has his limits but even so the fact that he wanted Peter to ask him for a second chance at the end was a brilliant touch. It’s a small moment but it helps make Bromwell feel more multidimensional.
And because of this characterization the story earns the pathos of Peter letting him down. You feel sad for Bromwell and for Peter that things didn’t work out for both of them.
Aunt May is also done very well here. She is in typical Aunt May mode but Fingeroth chooses to make that the central conflict of the story rather than a background element. Refreshingly though the issue isn’t that May is on her deathbed, but rather the impact (if you pardon the pun) upon her if anything happens to Peter.  The story is almost a spiritual cousin to JMS’ opus ‘the Conversation’ in that it comes to a reasonable and positive resolution.
What in particular what holds this all together is the brilliant (yet rarely used) idea of treating Peter’s cover story as Spidey’s photographer as a metaphor for him being Spider-Man. It’s something that’s pretty clever when you think about it because the cover story means his loved ones go into relationships with him knowing he takes risks and potentially endangers them, just as if they knew he was Spidey.
Through treating the cover story as a metaphor Fingeroth is able to have Peter get a lot of feelings about being Spidey off of his chest. This chiefly comes in the form of his bookeneded confrontations with Bromwell, his angry (and highly unjustified) outburst at the start and his quiet resigned acceptance at the end.
Perhaps the best bi of narration in relation to Peter’s character was when Fingeroth spelled out that Peter might enjoy being Spidey but even if he didn’t he’d do it anyway because he was hooked on helping people. It eloquently emphasis the innate heroism and core of the character. And it does so in a nuanced way too as too often writers have Peter outright hate being Spider-Man or else cynically lean on the idea he’s a thrill junkie of some kind. Fingeroth gets that peter DOES like his work but that isn’t the reason he does it.
Nuance is actually the key word here. There is a lovely sequence where the story acknowledges that Peter might subconsciously be avoiding Impact out of a loss of confidence. It plays very realistically. How often in life has one bad moment shaken us up and made us hesitant to do things we previously did without even thinking about it.
Really I don’t know what else to say about this story that isn’t self-evident by just experiencing it for yourself.
Tiny issues aside it’s really quite excellent and highly recommended.

Updated Age chart
So after doing some of my own research, I came to my theories as to how old everyone in Roots is. I’m going to start with James and Mary and work my way down. You’ll know which ones I had to speculate when I explain how I went about figuring it out. Keep in mind, this is still complete speculation when it comes to James, Mary, Leonard and Frank. These are the ages I’ll go be in my own imagines, but you should not consider them cannon unless the Devs say so. SPOILERS FOR ROOTS UP AHEAD!
The Grandparents
James:
(To figure out James’ death, it was kind of hand in hand with Mary’s. While calculating how old Mary was at time of her death, I speculated he was older by by even just a year, while still keeping in mind he was a fairly young man at the start of the game. After punching in the numbers and considering how old he would’ve been when HE dies, here are my results)
1860:-(Age:29) James Vanderboom comes to Rusty Lake and plants the seed after inheriting his Uncle William’s house. He unlocks the front door and falls asleep by the fire while dreaming of Mary.
1865:-(Age:34) James invites Mary to the house where he proposes to her.
1867-(Age:36) James and Mary become the parents of Albert, Samuel and Emma Vanderboom.
1870-(Age:39) Ten years after arriving at Rusty Lake, James discovers his uncle’s books and opens the secret passage to the Alchemy Lab. There, he tries to re-create the Elixir of Life that his Uncle William tried to create before his death. He feeds it to the family dog and the dog is fine. James drinks it, dies upon consumption and at his wake, his tongue it cut out as a sacrifice.
Mary:
(Mary was a tricky one, but when she dies in the game, you can’t tell how she died, whether Albert killed her or if it was old age. Keeping that in mind, I researched the average lifespan of the human females ((Don’t panic, you likely won’t actually die at this age. The oldest woman in the world was over 100 years old)) and I went backwards from there.)
1865-(Age: 33) Mary is invited to James’ home and he proposes to her to which she accepts.
1867-(Age:35) Mary gives birth to Samuel, Emma and Albert
1895-(Age 63) Mary attends Samuel and Ida’s wedding and poses for the photo with her children, daughter-in-law and grandson.
1896-(Age: 64) Plays the Lying game with her sons and daughter-in-law. Is given the Chariot as she only lied once
1904-(Age: 72) Listens to her family members play music, mysteriously dies when the lights go out and her teeth are taken as a sacrifice. (I personally think she died of shock)
The Triplets (and Ida):
Samuel:
1867- (Age: Newborn) Samuel is the first child born to Mary and James Vanderboom and fed breast milk in a bottle
1876-(Age: 9) Samuel is in the garden with his brother and sister. He knocks the butterfly out of the tree with a slingshot he made from a twig from the tree and Emma’s ribbon. He knocks a beehive onto his brother’s head, scarring him both physically and mentally for life.
1889-(Age: 22) Samuel fixes his family’s grandfather clock and gets a visit from Ida Reiziger, his future wife.
1895-(Age: 28) He and Ida are married and pose for their wedding photo with Albert, Emma, Mary and their son, Leonard.
1896-(Age: 29) He plays the Lying game with his wife, brother and mother. He is given the High Priestess as all his cards were true.
1904-(Age: 37) Plays the violin in the family band before he and Ida are kidnapped and murdered by Albert. Both of their eyes are taken as sacrifices.
Ida:
1866-(Age: Newborn) Ida is born as Ida Reiziger.
1889-(Age: 23) Ida visits Samuel when he’s fixing the family clock and a romantic relationship with him at some point, as she is pregnant with their son, Leonard. She also predicts the future of events to come in her crystal ball.
1895-(Age: 29) Ida and Samuel get married and pose for their wedding photo with their son Leonard, Mary, Emma and Albert
1896-(Age: 30) Plays The Lying game with her husband, brother-in-law and mother-in-law. Is given The Empress card as she only told the truth once, that Albert has her photo in his pocket.
1904-(Age 38) Plays the tambourine in the family band before she and Samuel are kidnapped and murdered by Albert. Both of their eyes are taken as sacrifices.
Emma:
1867- (Age: Newborn) Emma is the middle child born to Mary and James Vanderboom and fed rainwater in a bottle
1876-(Age: 9) Emma is in the garden with her brothers and knocks her brother Albert into a tree when she refused to give him the butterfly, resulting in a beehive being dropped on his head and leaving him permanently scarred.
1884-(Age: 17) Emma creates a magical flower by combining 4 of them and it impregnates her with her son, Frank.
1891-(Age: 24) Frank goes missing and Emma attaches a letter to Harvey in hopes of finding him
1895-(Age: 28) She appears in her brother, Samuel’s wedding photo as well as her mother, Samuel’s wife Ida, her nephew Leonard and her brother Albert.
1896-(Age: 29) Emma paints a portrait outside, thinking her son is dead and hangs herself out of grief. Her tears taken as a sacrifice.
Albert:
1867- (Age: Newborn) Albert is the youngest and last born of the triplets. Born with a birthmark on his face and is fed wine in a bottle
1876-(Age: 9) Albert is trying to catch a butterfly with his sister in the garden. After his sister pushes him over and he wishes both of his siblings were dead, his brother Samuel knocks a beehive onto his head, leaving Albert with permanent scar on his face.
1885-(Age: 18) Albert tries on masks in his room and stabs a butterfly to death. (The wiki says its the one from this childhood, but somehow I don’t think it would’ve been in tact in a box for 12 years. I don’t know. I don’t collect butterflies)
1891-(Age: 24) Albert pushes his nephew Frank down the family well
1895-(Age: 28) Albert joins his newly-wed brother and the rest of the family at the time for the Wedding photo of Samuel and Ida.
1896-(Age: 29) He plays the Lying game with his brother, sister-in-law and mother. Albert is given The Devil card, as he lies throughout the game. We find out he had an obsession with his brother’s wife Ida and he dons a deer skull as a mask.
1904-(Age: 37) Plays the tuba in the family band and kidnaps Samuel and Ida. (Possibly murdered Mary too, idk) Uses voodoo to torture and kill them by removing their eyes.
1909-(Age: 42) Uses alchemy to artificially have a child with Ida. After mixing water, Ida’s ovarian egg that he kept, his semen and a green potion, his daughter Rose is born.
1924- (Age: 57) Taunts his nephew, Frank with berries though the storm drain and proceeds to laugh at him after getting his hand stabbed
1926- (Age: 59) Re-unites with Frank and plays chess with him while planning to kill his nephew. Frank beats him and strangles Albert to death. His brain is removed as a sacrifice.
The Grandchildren:
Leonard:
(If the wiki was right and the baby crying was INDEED telling us that Ida was pregnant with Leonard, I counted 9 mouths after each month in Summer and speculated Leonard was born early the next year after the events of “The Fortune Teller” where we meet Ida)
1890- (Age: Newborn) Leonard is born to Samuel and Ida
1895- (Age: 5) Leonard poses for his parents wedding photo with his parents, grandmother, uncle and aunt
1904-(Age: 14) Leonard plays the clarinet in the family band. When the room blacks out and becomes covered in blood, his grandmother is dead and his parents are missing. Leonard wonders if they died too.
1914-(Age: 24) Leonard heads off to join the army and fight in World War I ten years after the deaths of his parents. He uses pigeons to retrieve bike parts and assembles his motorbike to head off to war.
1918-(Age: 28) Not long after World War 1 ends, Leonard is sent home after missing his foot in the trenches. As bullets are pulled out of him and he’s fitted with a pegged leg, Leonard has flashbacks of his times in the trenches. While he wished to go home, a grenade blew off his leg. In the haze of the explosion, he saw figures of a Corrupted Soul, his parents in their wedding clothes, his Uncle Albert holding the voodoo dolls he killed them with and Mr Crow. Leonard managed to don a gas mask in time, so he survived with his foot gone. That same foot is taken as a sacrifice.
1929-(Age: 39) Leonard follows instructions to a treasure Mr Crow mentioned and digs up the bronze timepiece.
1935-(Age: 45) Visits the Alchemy Lab with his cousins, Frank and Rose and places the timepieces to open the gate. He is wrapped in Roots the last time we see him, his fate left unknown.
Frank:
(How I figured this put isn’t as interesting as the others. Emma looked heavily pregnant when the flower flew up her skirt, so I pretty much speculated he was born within that year as it was only Spring when Emma got pregnant)
1884: (Age: Newborn) Frank Vanderboom is born
1891: (Age: 7) Frank swings too hard on the swing set and hangs on with both hands on the windlass of the well. After being given his Teddy Bear, his Uncle Albert turns the crank, making him fall in.
1909: (Age: 25) Frank is fed a potato in exchange for flints in the storm drain when his cousin, Rose is born.
1924: (Age: 40) Escapes from the well with the help of his cousin Rose after being trapped for 33 years
1926: (Age: 42) Re-unites with Albert in a chess match while planning to kill him. Beats Albert and strangles him to death as revenge for pushing down the well and driving his mother to suicide.
1927: (Age: 43) Has a hot bath and cuts his long hair and beard off. His hair is taken as a sacrifice.
1930: (Age: 46) Goes to the attic and finds the letter his mother Emma sent when looking for him 39 years prior. After seeing his mother and Mr Crow in the stars, he unlocks a box with the code “LOVE”. Frank receives the silver timepiece.
1933: (Age: 49) Shares a dance with his cousin, Rose.
1935-(Age: 51) Visits the Alchemy Lab with his cousins, Leonard and Rose and places the timepieces to open the gate. He is wrapped in Roots the last time we see him, his fate left unknown.
Rose:
1909- (Age: Newborn) Is artificially created by her father, Albert in the Alchemy Lab.
1919- (Age: 10) Communicated with her great-great-uncle, William and promises to help him live again.
1924-(Age: 15) Helps her cousin Frank to escape from the well.
1932-(Age: 23) Visits her family graveyard and digs up the bones of her deceased relatives to complete a skeleton. She receives the gold timepiece.
1933- (Age: 24) Shares a dance with her cousin, Frank and pricks her finger on a broken record. Her blood is taken as a sacrifice.
1935-(Age: 26) Visits the Alchemy lab with her cousins Leonard and Frank. Places the time pieces and sacrifices to open the gate and re-incarnates William as Laura, the woman

12:06 - Orla: I was just paying for my coffee and he came out of the denim shop in the 2nd floor. I guess he was tall? I didn’t even really see his face tbh 😂 😂 😂
12:07 - Orla: But I SAW THAT BUTT. HE HAD THE PERFECT BUTT. 💖 💖 💖
12:08 - Orla: Wait.
12:08 - Orla sends a picture.
12:09 - Patti: What the fuck???
12:09 - Patti: You followed a man in the shopping centre to get a blurry shot of his butt?!? Orla OMG 😨 😆
12:09 - Orla: It sounds creepy when you phrase it like that?!?  😆 THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED.
12:10 - Orla: JUST LOOK AT THE BUTT SHAPE THOUGH.
12:11 - Orla: Late eighties, I’d say. 1988/1989 I think. Caucasian male, possibly on his way to become a manager or CEO.
12:13 - Patti: You didn’t even see his face? He could be old?! And an alcoholic?
12:13 - Patti: Even if you HAD seen his face, how woud you be able to tell any of these things?!
12:13 - Patti: *would
12:14 - Orla: HA!
12:15 - Orla: See, that was what my year in the sportswear store was good for.
12:15 - Orla: I KNOW A LOT ABOUT ARSES IN TIGHT CLOTHES. 😈 😈
12:15 - Orla: Show me ANY butt and I’ll give you the important info. COME ON, TRY ME.
12:15 - Patti: I only have photos of Daryl’s butt. 😂
12:16 - Orla: I take them, too. I could probably try and guess his mood when the pic was taken?! 😂
12:16 - Patti: Okay I’ll bite. Wait.
12:16 - Orla: NO NAKED BUTTS THOUGH!
12:17 - Patti sends a picture.
12:17 - Orla: OH MY that is a good shot?!
12:17 - Patti: RIGHT!? 😍
12:17 - Orla: Don’t tell him I said that. 😂
12:18 - Patti: Why not, he’ll be flattered. 😂
12:18 - Patti: Anyhoo, do tell.
12:22 - Orla: The dark gray jeans. He usually wears those to concerts or just going out. There’s just camera light in the pic so it was already dark so he was about to leave SO he was in a good mood already, excited to get drunk with whomever would join him later, probably Mick, and you begged him for a last butt shot, being the weirdo you are, so his mood even improved and he left the apartment as a very happy, confident man who knows HE HAS IT ALL IN LIFE. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
12:23 - Patti: WOW LOL? True??! 😂 😂 😂
12:23 - Patti: That isn’t exactly butt science, though, you just combined some facts.
12:23 - Patti: And it’s still weird that you know my boyfriend better than I do. 😂
12:24 - Orla: Ah, I’ve only known him for a little longer. And yeah, you’re right. It’s not butt science. Probably doesn’t work with familiar butts. 😂
12:24 - Orla: Trust me, though. I have ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ~* A Talent *~ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
12:25 - Patti: You know what? I wouldn’t even be surprised if you had. 😂
12:26 - Patti: So when are you gonna marry Butt Man? Gotta save the date.
12:27 - Orla: I dunno if I should. I have second thoughts now. I don’t want a lame manager or CEO. Never did.
12:28 - Patti: Ah, that’s fair.
12:29 - Patti: Oh shit I gotta run btw, I need to get some groceries and some stuff.
12:30 - Orla: Alright, I need to do some work, too. Gotta finish some mock ups for my wannados and see Ma then.
12:31 - Patti: Are you at the DD later? I dunno, I feel like going?
12:31 - Orla: It wasn’t the plan but now that you said it?! SAME.
12:31 - Orla: LADIES NIGHT?!?!?! 👀 👀 👀  We could ask Jess and Harper?!?
12:32 - Patti: I dunno. Maybe just the two of us? I dunno, I feel we haven’t talked in a while?
12:33 - Orla: Is something wrong? 🥺 Did the man piss you off?
12:33 - Patti: LOL no, he’s very cute actually. 😍 There’s nothing wrong in particular, I really just feel like talking to someone
12:34 - Orla: OKAY THEN. I think I could be there at seven?
12:35 - Patti: Seven sounds great. I’m gonna text you later, I really gotta hurry oops LOL.
12:35 - Patti: LATER
12:35 - Orla: LATER 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖
