what are your top 5 movie recommendations?
EYY ok im a terrible person to ask because i absolutely do not watch movies unless forced to at gunpoint and most of them are not queer SO here's just like... my 5 fav movies i guess lmao
THE JACKET (2005) dir. John Maybury 🌸
Tumblr media
(hey my first non-bl related gif!)
The narrative is a time slip fantasy in which a Gulf War veteran who suffered a death or near-death experience while on active service returns to the United States where he is blamed for the death of a policeman, and incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane. Subject to experimental treatments there, which involve him being shut inside a morgue casket while tied in a straitjacket, he eventually learns to travel through time and is able to offer help to various people.
i watched this in high school one lazy afternoon with my mom and became obsessed. i don't think it did well? or was really on anyone's radar? but Keira Knightley is fucking gorgeous in it as is Adrien Brody - both of which i had massive crushes on back then. it's definitely HEAVY and darker, obviously, and has a bit of an open ending but i eat that shit up.
"The important thing in life is to believe that while you're alive it's never too late."
PROMARE (2019) dir. Hiroyuki Imaishi 🌸
Tumblr media
Thirty years has passed since the appearance of the Burnish, a race of flame-wielding mutant beings, who destroyed half of the world with fire. When a new group of aggressive mutants calling themselves Mad Burnish appears, the epic battle between Galo Thymos, a new member of the anti-Burnish rescue team Burning Rescue, and Lio Fotia, the leader of Mad Burnish begins.
i've watched promare an embarrassing amount of times, but hey, it's actually a little queer so there's that! the synopsis is just a drop in the hat of what the movie actually is. we love anarchist rebels and advocates for equal rights (and enemies to lovers between a smol angry rebel and a big lovable himbo.) small note - we lost Galo's english VA, Billy Kametz, last year to his battle with cancer. he played a huge role in a lot of my favorite shows and games and it really broke my heart.
DRAGONHEART (1996) dir. Rob Cohen 🌸
Tumblr media
Sir Bowen, an English knight of "the Old Code", mentors Saxon prince Einon in his ideals to make him a better king than his father Freyne. While suppressing a peasant rebellion, rebels ambush and kill Freyne. Then a young peasant girl named Kara accidentally wounds Einon's heart. Einon's Celtic mother Aislinn has Einon taken before a dragon and asks him to save the boy's life. The dragon makes Einon promise to be a just ruler with honor and replaces Einon's wounded heart with half his own. However, Einon proves more oppressive by enslaving the former rebels that killed his father and forcing them to rebuild a Roman castle. Einon also has Kara's father, who led the insurgents, blinded. Believing the dragon's heart has corrupted Einon, Bowen swears vengeance on him and all dragons by hunting them down.
listen, i'm old okay? i watched this obsessively when i was a kid. i didn't own the VHS, i'm not really sure why? but anytime it was on tv i was glued to it. i think i eventually did record it onto a vhs.
MILK (2008) dir. Gus Van Sant 🌸
Tumblr media
In 1972, Harvey Milk and his then-lover Scott Smith leave New York for San Francisco, with Milk determined to accomplish something meaningful in his life. Settling in the Castro District, he opens a camera shop and helps transform the area into a mecca for gays and lesbians. In 1977 he becomes the nation's first openly gay man elected to a notable public office when he wins a seat on the Board of Supervisors. The following year, Dan White kills Milk in cold blood.
i watched this just as i was coming to terms with my own queerness. i wanted to learn more about queer history and this movie came out at the exact perfect time for that. i was a freshman in high school, i'd never heard of Harvey Milk before, but my mom had and she encouraged me to watch it. it got me doing a lot more research into queer history and learning where we came from so while the movie may not be perfect, may not be wholly accurate, i thank it for that.
TITAN A.E. (2000) dir. Don Bluth & Gary Goldman 🌸
Tumblr media
"Titan A.E." takes place in the distant future, after Earth has been obliterated by a mysterious alien race known as the Drej. Cale is a human teenager who has been given a mysterious map by his father, leading him on an unforgettable journey.
i am nothing if not an absolute slut for Don Bluth movies. that man illustrated my childhood. as i got older my mom told me about Titan A.E. and said it was a must watch for my nerdy ass. she was correct. it's not the perfect movie but it's a great look at what Don Bluth and Gary Goldman could've done if we'd considered "animation for adults" back then. we're finally getting somewhere with it now, and i like to think we have them to thank in part for that.
also fun story my husband met one of the animators for this film at a party where a lot of people were doing a lot of drugs and he gave him his card AND MY HUSBAND LOST IT
alright anon and friends i hope i haven't ruined your opinion of me with my taste in movies ~ thank you to all the gifmakers that have made gifs of these films, i'm so glad i didn't have to make one for all of them lmao.

awww love it 🥰
The Devil You Once Knew {Rafe Cameron}
Tumblr media
Warnings: cursing, anxiety, panic attacks, some drinking, mentions of trauma, sex, soft sex, soft!Rafe
Pairings: soft!Rafe Cameron x Female Pogue Reader
Type: Smut and Fluff
Word Count: 1.6k
You and Kiara were just serving the last few people that were there. Closing time was in 10 minutes so you both were cleaning the tables that had no one there and sweeping the floors. This was your first time back at work this late for awhile.
You were working day shifts but, they were not as long as your old ones. Today you decided to try to work one of your old shifts. Basically there was an incident 2 months ago with a man who came into the store while you were closing.
He had a gun and he was trying to rob the store. You could remember perfectly how he made you lay down on the floor with you face down as he was looking for money to take. He had threatened multiple times to kill you so the incident was terrifying.
Kiara was not there that time because she had to leave early and you told the rest of the employees that were there that you would close up for them. At least they didn't have to go through what you had gone through. You tried to get that awful memory out of your head as Kiara walked over to you.
"Hey Y/N... I'm really sorry but, I have to leave right now. My dad just called me, there is a family emergency." She said. You felt a wave of panic flow through you but you took a few deep breaths to try to calm yourself before your anxiety started.
"It's ok, I'll be able to close on my own today." You said.
"Okay... again I am really sorry." Kiara said as she pulled her coat on and grabbed her bag.
"It's ok, it's not your fault." You smiled a little. She gave you a hug and then she left. You were alone in the store now. You took some more deep breaths and continued to clean up. You noticed on one of the chairs that someone forgot their jacket.
You picked it up and put it in the back, you figured they would come back and get it tomorrow. You continued to clean up and then you felt the anxiety start to build up. This was exactly what happened last time, that led up to the horrible events.
Your hands started to shake and you began to sweat more. You couldn't think straight and your legs gave out and you fell to your knees and started sobbing. You were just sitting there on your knees sobbing, unable to think straight. You didn't even hear someone walk into the restaurant.
"Hey, sorry I know you're closing but I forgot my jacke- oh my god! Y/N are you ok?!" You herd Rafe say as he ran over to you. He got on his knees beside you and you kept sobbing. He hugged you and you just ended up melting into him, wrapping your arms around him.
"It's ok... just take deep breaths ok?" He said petting your head. You sniffled and started taking deep breaths. He kept petting your head trying to calm you down. You finally were able to catch your breath and looked up at him, your cheeks were tear-stained.
"Now.. what's wrong? What happened?" He asked.
"I- it's just... after what happen 2 months ago I got scared to be alone again. I don't want what happened before to happen again. The thought of it still plagues me." You sniffled.
"And that's totally okay. It's only been 2 months. You were held at gunpoint... it will take time. And the trauma will never really go away but you'll learn how to cope with it." He said. You nodded and smiled a little.
"Well I can stay with you and help you close up." He said.
"That would mean a lot.. thank you Rafe." You said with a smile. "I just hope I'll be okay once I go home, I'm going to be home alone tonight so." You said as you got up again. Rafe got up too.
"It's no trouble really and, if you're worried about staying home alone tonight, you could stay over at my place tonight or even just for a few hours and have a drink with me to calm down." He said.
"I- that's so sweet... but what would I tell my parents? My parents would never let me sleepover with a boy." You said.
"Just say you're having a sleepover with Sarah." He said with a shrug. You chuckled a little.
"That's a good idea." You said with a smile as you texted your parents that you were going to sleep over with Sarah and they said it was ok. Rafe started helping you clean up and you were honestly shocked that he was helping you this much.
He usually would terrorize The Pogues, especially John B, JJ, Kiara, and Pope. The devil you once knew was now being the sweetest man ever. The two of you finished cleaning up and then you locked up the restaurant and he drove you to his place.
It was dark out now and you were still kind of anxious but shockingly, being with Rafe made you feel calm and safe. He pulled into the driveway and he got out of the truck then he came around and opened your door up for you. You smiled a little as he helped you out.
The two of you walked inside together and he took you into the kitchen first. You sat down at the island as he walked around to the other side.
"Is there anything you'd like? Food or water or anything?" He asked.
"I guess I'll just have whatever you have." You said. Rafe nodded and he grabbed two beers out of the fridge. He handed one of the can of beers to you and you smiled and took it. "Thank you." You said as you opened it and took a sip.
He opened his beer and took a sip as well. You were surprised with how your anxiety was going down with him. You never though out of everyone in Outer Banks, that Rafe Cameron would make you feel safe.
You had never seen the sweet and soft side of him but, you loved this side of him. You wished that you could've saw this sign of him sooner. He came around to the other side that you were on and sat down beside you.
The two of you were just drinking beer, talking, laughing, just having fun. You placed your beer down on the island and looked over to Rafe who was looking at you. You smiled and tilted your head. You corked your brow a little, you were a little confused on why he was looking at you like that.
"Why are you-" Before you could even finish what you were trying to say he cut you off by leaning in and kissing you. "I- mm!" You hummed but kissed back. The way he kissed you made you feel warm inside.
Rafe put his beer down on the island and he grabbed onto your hips as the two of you made out. You put your hands through his hair and melted into him. He pulled back but only to pick you up, making you giggle.
He took you upstairs to his bedroom. He gently tossed you onto the bed making you squeal. He smiled at your reaction. He honestly though that you were so cute, that's why he wasn't cruel to you like he was to everyone else.
He got on top of you and kissed you. You kissed back and tugged on his hair making him groan quietly into your mouth. He then sat up and started taking off your clothing and then he took off his own clothes.
"I'd take my time with you but, I just can't." He said as pulled a condom and then he spread your legs and positioned himself between them. He slowly pushed into you making both of you moan out softly. He then began to thrust into you.
He was soft and gentle with you but, it felt so fucking good. You wrapped your arms around his neck and threw your head back as he thrusted into you, slowly going faster. Even though he was going faster, he was still gentle with you.
You arched your back holding onto him. You then wrapped your legs around his hips as he went faster and faster. Your eyes rolled back and you moaned out louder. You had sex before but, it had never felt this good.
After a few minutes you felt that familiar knot growing in your stomach. You clenched around him, signaling him that you were close. You could tell he was close too since his thrusts were getting sloppy.
"Fuck I'm gonna cum!" You moaned out.
"I'm gonna cum too baby, come on, cum for me." Rafe said. You moaned out loudly as your legs began to shake and your eyes rolled back and you came hard on his cock. After a few minutes he came as well. He pulled out and took off the now full condom and threw it into the trash.
He laid down beside you and you rolled over and held onto him. You rested your head on his chest and smiled when he kissed your head. You felt so happy and safe with Rafe.
You guessed the devil you once knew really wasn't a devil at all, deep down there was a sweet and kind man, a man you knew instantly you loved.

Stealing kills | M.M
pairing(s): Miles Morales x reader, Miles Morales x gn!reader, Miles Morales x goddess!reader, Miles Morales x immortal!reader, Gwen Stacey x reader, Gwen Stacey x gn!reader
Word count: 2.4k+
Summary: You never expected to meet a teenage boy one night out on your parol and ever since he has -annoyingly- stuck to your side using his webs as glue, the next time you two go on parol for the night you ‘steal his kill’
Warning(s): Fluff, annoying Miles, Sarcastic reader, slight mention of guns, language, mutual pinning, play fighting, make outs, miles is aged up around 20, This is mostly gn but I do use the word goddess my apologies! (Please let me know if I missed anything)
A/n: -GIF is not mine- The other stories In my drafts that I have yet to finish🕴🏽btw Miles is so underrated it’s not even funny( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°)
Tumblr media
Miles Morales was a strange child that you had never expected yourself to meet as you were flying through the air trying to catch the four men who thought it would be a wonderful idea to rob a museum and kill two security guards as he talked your head off about these video games he had talked about on the last four Paroles.
“Wait if you’re a goddess does that make you Greek” The college student questioned as he shot a web towards one of the thieves successfully wrapping the white substance around their arms and torso as he slung them up on a street light making a mental note to come back later
“No Morales if you couldn’t tell which apparently you can’t, I’m Russian” You muttered settling on the ground a black energy passing through your fingertips, you flicked your wrist towards the group of thieves one of the criminals tackled the other as you controlled their body spinning your finger creating black chains around the pair and residing back in the air searching for Miles
You wouldn’t admit but you might of grew quite fond of the Mortal at first you thought of killing him simply because he couldn’t seem to keep his distance and repeatedly annoyed you but then soon enough you were threatening Miles in his dorm about going on paroles by himself
Well you found him
Flying Falling through the sky trying to shoot jammed web shooters so before you knew it you were less than two feet away from a falling and screaming Miles your powers coming in handy as you grabbed his wrist as he almost fell past you
“Never knew you had so much pitch little bug” you teased as Miles were trying to catch his breath dramatically throwing a hand over his heart
“Shut up” was all the spider could come up with before he pointed his wrist to a stop sign not to far behind the getaway thief and successfully swinging away you rolled your eyes before going back to the ground wrapping up the three criminals you did manage to catch for the police your own mask secure around you face
You simply teleport back to the last area where miles were packing up the last criminal leaving a black mist behind before it simply vanished as you had
You couldn’t find them or more specifically Miles you didn’t care about the thief you could kill him from your chambers if that’s what you wished
You were attempting to spot the pair trying your best not to get annoyed by the news helicopters trying to get a story when you finally found them the criminal had held Miles at gunpoint holding up his hands in surrender at the edge of greenwood park
You landed on the the grass as it crunched under your feet slowly walking toward miles and the criminal who yelled and boomed for you to put your hands up that same criminal who also had a orange peel as brain cells if he thought for a second he would take anything you loved from you including your spider mortal
“Bitch I will kill this little freak if you come any closer” The tone he held with hatred and venom made you stomach turn as you felt your mind keep your body from reacting to soon
“I’m closer”
Was all the criminal heard from behind him as he was being knocked out cold but how, you were right there In front of him you heard his thoughts and it made you smirk yourself
“It’s called a clone love” you squatted as you whispered to what looked like an unconscious man before your leather gloved fist collided with his cheek this time the man was actually knocked unconscious
There were cameras everywhere along with police holding back the eager news reports as you jogged over to Miles the boy not that far from you as you came down to his seated level
“You feeling okay, are you hurt?” your tone held a questioning concern for the teenager who was slightly panting taking the offer you gave him using your hand to get up from the floor
“No, you stole my kill” You were ready to heal Miles with your powers if need be after his long dramatic pregnant pause but when he added on to his sentence you couldn’t help but smack the back of his neck as he let out a whine of pain muttering something about being delicate
“This isn’t Fortnite Morales, Can you swing?” you questioned him with a roll of you eyes as he nodded and looked at the rowdy crowd of people already pointing his writs to a building as you simply gravitated off the floor flying off with Miles yelling at you to wait up
The farther you two got the less commotion you heard it was quiet at least for a while before Miles started to be… Miles
“You said this isn’t Fortnite, so you do listen to me!” Miles exclaimed as you both landed and settled on a building not far from the deli shop down the street as you signed taking off your mask Miles still going on and on about how he knew it
You wanted to jump off this building towards your temporary death at least you’ll be at peace for a while -a while only being about an hour and a half-
Before you knew it you were wrapped up in a spider web the sticky substance sticking towards your suit as you looked at Miles with a Rosen eyebrow you could easily free yourself but what did he want to the point where he would tie you up in the silky and sticky substance
“I’m not that annoying” Oh. you definitely said that out loud but at least he knew he was annoying that’s a start
“Don’t get all butt hurt on me Morales” You muttered as a black mist engulfed you letting the webs melt to the ground and off your suit as you were about to walk to the edge of the building to fly to the next when the silky web were back around your torso and arms which made you huff in frustration
You turned around to Miles who had half smile and half smirk on his face ‘the audacity of this mortal’ you strolled towards the Brooklyn student as a lion would prey irritation clear in your facial expression Miles didn’t know why he felt.. Excited
but also scared as shit
“You wanna go toe to toe with me, pretty boy?” Your voice was cold, challenging and threatening all at the same time miles felt himself get flustered before he had a random boost of confidence remembering the advice Gwen gave him
‘Just play the game she does’
So he did
“Go for it I’ll give you the first shot” His own voice was cold and challenging not as much as your own but it was good enough to get the point across Miles was surprised his voice didn’t betray him and crack or squeak
Your chuckle was deep as it erupted from your throat your eyes were flickering black as you melted the webs from your body “oh your bold sweetheart”
Miles could have melted right where he stood and became a puddle in that very spot your accent was so much thicker as the pet name spilt from your lips like suede and how your fingertips drew shapes on his face your nails lightly scratching his skin
“Alright little bug you wanna play let’s play” you simply walked to the edge of the building your back towards Miles before you quickly turned around to fast for Miles to except anything before black chains were wrapped around him arms and torso you didn’t make them that strong but it still had some resistance he had super strength he’ll be fine
You jumped from the building getting pretty close to the ground before you propelled you up body up causing you to gravitate toward the sky and fly off as Mile’s struggled against the restraints
When Miles saw that he was getting nowhere by trying to wiggle himself out of the chains he looked around on the roof for anything that would help him age he scooted towards to the side of the build that there was a group of pebbles and rocks as he picked up the biggest one and wiggled his hand toward the front of the chains and brung his hand back as far as it would go and slammed the rock against the chains in hope it would break
It didn’t.
Instead it broke the rock as miles groaned in frustration then it was as a light bulb received energy as he positioned his side along with his arm rocking back and forth as the chains created little spark of heat flying from the friction until it was weak enough for Miles to break free of
As soon as the chains slipped off his body and hit the floor they turned into a black mist before vanishing Miles pointed his wrist to a building and was off on his way to play your little game
you were sitting on some abandoned apartment building you could see the park -a different one- not far along the pathway someone was watching you, you felt their eyes on your back instincts you rolled back from the ledge and a spider web came for your body and missing its target
“Took you long enough” was all you brung yourself to say as you flipped off the building landing on the ground and ran deeper into the park dodging spider webs on your way
Miles had temporarily lost you with all the sharp turns you took and settled on the ground Miles sharp on his toes quietly looking around for you what he didn’t expect was for you to be invisible right behind him waiting for the right moment
Miles bends over to check a large bush for your feet which was no avail in his favor before you were jumping on the spiders back wrapping your legs around his neck propelling him to the ground as you landed next to him in a squat posture using your hand in front to steady yourself
Miles was quick to get back on his feet not experiencing after shock immediately before the spider were in front of you going toe to toe attempting to hit the weakest spots of human body the stomach, hip bones, right above the v line
You blocked majority of the hits until Miles successfully threw a punch just below the valley of your chest making you double over in loss of air before he took your legs as he flipped you to the ground on your back Miles ready to pin you
You swept your leg out and under his feet Miles tripping and landing on his own back with a groan as you rolled over and up to straddle his waist pinning him to the grass as you counted to five to give miles a chance to redeem himself and when he just let out a deep breath through his nose and threw his head back towards the grass as you smirked in victory
“Better luck next time little bug” Miles didn’t know why he found your voice seductive or enchanting he felt a lot of things especially with you straddling his lap not far from a very sensitive area
“Y-yeah, I was close though” Miles felt like he couldn’t function correctly you chest was right above him practically in his face and he knew if his Mother saw him she would smack him upside his head but he couldn’t help it, it was you for crying out loud
You didn’t get up bathing in your victory and on the other hand Miles was growing insane he could feel himself practically grow and while you were amazing, beautiful, and breathtaking he would rather not die of embarrassment
You felt it of course you did you were right on top of it and it made you smile to yourself you always got him so flustered a stuttering mess but you would love to make him stutter in other ways
You also saw him peeking at your chest than trying to look anywhere else in embarrassment if only you ruin the little spider right then and their but you were in a park and still needed consent
“See something you like Morales” you voice was teasingly threatening and as Miles tried his best to not fumble over his words while attempting to redeem his self
Your hand slipped under the back of his head feeling the material of the hem of his suit as you slowly brought his head upwards to your own giving him time to disagree if he didn’t want to when Miles didn’t show any signs of discomfort or uneasiness you smashed your lips against his tawny ones
Miles felt on cloud fucking nine you were kissing him, your lips felt like you were completely taking his over in a dominating sense but that’s what he would’ve expected you were a 367 year old goddess -Russian goddess-
“Do you want me to stop?” The question fell from your lips as you both came up for air god no he didn’t want you to stop but that’s not what it came out as it came out as babbling, muttering, and undefinable words of begging
“I need you to use your word darling” Miles was about to die, happy of course but die right there in the deepest part of a park
“Please don’t stop, please” Miles would get on his knees. scrape his knee on every inch of concrete in view hit his ankles with a scooter repeatedly for your lips to hurry and be on his
“I’m gonna take care of you, make you feel really good alright love?” Miles just rapidly shook his head before your lips were back on his as you took his wrist guiding them to your waist
A black mist engulfed you both whole as the scenery changed to grass, trees, and chirping birds to a big open bay windowed room settling you two on the biggest bed Miles hadn’t even known existed and flushed a dusty rose when he realized he was only in his boxer you started to trail kisses down his neck then his abdomen above his v-line and then his clothed crouch and you did what you said
Make him feel very good

Breakfast- Jim Hopper (2)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jim Hopper x Reader
Characters: Jim Hopper
Warnings: N/A
Request: N/A
Word Count: 403
Author: Aaron
Jim fought against his closing eyes as he sat at the table, eagerly awaiting his breakfast.
“So what exciting, crime fighting things do you have going on today?” You asked as you flipped the sizzling bacon onto it’s back and gently placed the fried egg onto the plate.
“Oh, nothing too much. It’s Hawkins, I’m lucky to have anything exciting going on. I can’t remember the last day I had something fun going on. Even if some of the teenagers just caused a little bit of trouble, I think it would really brighten my day up, I’m not talking beating up the elderly here but maybe a small trashcan fire, a little bit of graffiti. Anything that isn’t sitting around the office all day drinking shitty coffee and watching the clock. Jim’s eyes lit up as you lay the bacon on the plate and strolled over to the table. “Wow, thank you. Actually…” He said with a mouthful of pancake. “I am going to speak to Joyce about her missing son today.”
“That’s uh… fun? Right? A nice little road trip.”
“A nice little five-minute road trip maybe… if it was up to me I wouldn’t even go, massive waste of time the kid’s going to be fine.” He stood up, brushed the crumbs from his lap and sat the plate on the kitchen countertop.
“It might be boring but I’m glad I know that you should be safe, as long as there isn’t a dumpster fire or some vandalism or whatever.” Jim chuckled.
“Like I said, it’s good ol’ Hawkins, Indiana. I don’t think there’s much danger for anyone to get hurt, it has its upsides you know. Obviously, there’s a lot less paperwork to deal with but sometimes I just want somebody to rob the bank at gunpoint or steal a car so we can have a high speed car chase or whatever.”
“Jim!” You slapped his arm. “You shouldn’t say that, one day it might come true and I don’t want to see you zipping past at whatever speeds, leaning out the window shooting at the car in front. You should be careful what you wish for, you never know what might come true.”
“Police Chief Jim Hopper saves the town from arms dealing drug cartels!” Jim stared off into the distance with a confident smile. “Looks like day dreaming is going to have to get me through the day.”

"HEAT" (1995) Review
Tumblr media
"HEAT" (1995) Review
For many filmgoers and critics, the 1995 crime drama ”HEAT” is regarded as director Michael Mann’s masterpiece. It is the movie that most fans think of when the director’s name is mentioned. ”TIME” magazine had even placed it on its list of top 100 crime dramas of all time. And the brutal downtown Los Angeles shootout is considered to be one of the best action sequences in movie history.
So . . . how do I feel about "HEAT"? Like many others, I consider it to be one of the best crime dramas I have ever seen. Honestly. The movie centered around a cat-and-mouse game between a Los Angeles Police detective named Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and a ruthless professional thief named Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). McCauley’s carefully planned heist of an armored car that contained US$1.6 million dollars in bearer bonds owned by a money launderer named Roger Van Zant (William Fichtner) goes slightly wrong when one of his crew – a trigger-happy cowboy named Waingro (Kevin Gage) – kills one of the armored car guards being held at gunpoint by the crew. Realizing they cannot leave behind any witnesses, McCauley’s crew is forced to kill the remaining guards. This multiple homicide, along with the armored car robbery, attracts the attention of Detective Hanna and his squad – members of the L.A.P.D. Robbery/Homicide Unit.
Back in the late 1980s, Michael Mann had written a transcript for a 1989 made-for-television film called ”L.A. TAKEDOWN” about a cat-and-mouse game between a Los Angeles Police detective and a hardened and methodical criminal that affected a bank robbery in downtown Los Angeles. Following his success of ”THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS”, Mann took that transcript and broadened it for a theatrical movie that would eventually become ”HEAT”. Mann’s screenplay featured a multi-layered and complex look into the lives of professional criminals and the police officers that pursued them. Through characters like the introverted thief McCauley and one of his co-horts, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), audiences received a glimpse into the lives of professional criminals that were neither mobsters or amateurish lone wolves. Men like McCauley and Shiherlis were just as organized as the Mob, but they did not come from any particular ethnic group like the La Cosa Nostra. The movie also offered a glimpse into their personal lives and reveal how their pursuit of crime affected their families and other loved ones. ”HEAT” also presented a parallel glimpse into the lives of police officers like Vincent Hanna, who led a special unit of detectives that investigate robberies and homicides. Mann took film goers into Hanna’s marriage. There, the director revealed how the detective’s intense dedication to his profession and temper affected said marriage.
As I had earlier stated, ”HEAT” is a complex tale filled with intriguing characters and multiple subplots that served the movie’s main plot. Well . . . some of the subplots accomplished this task. The one plot that dominated the movie (and served as the only plot for Mann’s ”L.A. TAKEDOWN”) was the clash between Hanna and McCauley that culminated in a downtown Los Angeles bank robbery and its aftereffects. Through his script and direction, Mann provided some memorable moments in the film. I found myself impressed by the scene that featured McCauley and his crew being double-crossed at a local drive-in theater by men working for money launderer Van Zant. Another scene that impressed me was the more dramatic quarrel between Chris Shiherlis and his wife, Charlene (Ashley Judd) over his gambling habits. The scene served as a reminder on how the activities of criminals end up affecting their lives on a personal scale. One favorite scene featured an amusing, yet crowd-pleasing moment when Hanna realized that McCauley had become aware of the squad’s presence with his own investigation. But the movie’s tour-de-force remains, of course, the famous shootout in downtown Los Angeles, following a bank robbery committed by McCauley and his crew. I could rave over the excellence and excitement of the scene. But why should I bother? The sequence’s positive reputation amongst critics and filmgoers is a perfect reflection of the scene’s excellence. I can only think of a handful of similar action sequences – two of them from other Mann movies – that are this well shot.
As much as I admire ”HEAT”, it has its flaws. One, the movie has a running time of 165 minutes. Now, this might not be much of a problem on its own. However, it does become something of a problem with a movie filled with what I consider to be unnecessary subplots that dragged the film in certain areas. I could have done without the movie’s romantic subplots. McCauley’s romance with a bookstore clerk/graphics artist named Eady (Amy Bremmerman) bored the hell out of me. Hanna’s marriage to a divorcee named Justine (Diane Verona) annoyed me. Well . . . her character annoyed me. I became weary of her constant complaints about his “dedication” to the job. This particular subplot had its own in the form of Hanna’s suicidal stepdaughter (Natalie Portman), who seemed incapable of dealing with her real father’s absence from her life. In the end, Hanna and McCauley’s personal lives seemed to have NO real impact upon the movie’s main plot and minor impact upon their respective characters. Worse, both subplots nearly dragged the film. Ironically, the two relationships that had a stronger impact upon the movie’s main plot turned out to be Chris and Charlene Shiherlis’s troubled marriage and the marriage between another member of McCauley’s crew named Trejo (Danny Trejo) and his wife, Anna (Begonya Plaza). Chris and Charlene’s marriage and feelings for one another played a role in Chris’ fate following the disastrous bank robbery. And Trejo’s love for his wife led him to reveal McCauley’s robbery plans, while being tortured by Van Zant’s men and Waingro . . . before they could tip off the police. And yet, these two relationships did not receive as much screen time as Hanna and McCauley’s relationships.
Three other subplots failed to grab me. With Trejo and his wife in Van Zant’s clutches, McCauley was forced to recruit a driver for the bank robbery – a paroled convict named Donald Breeden (Dennis Haysbert). Unfortunately, Mann included a subplot that led Breeden to break his parole and accept McCauley’s job offer – a subplot that described the parolee’s difficulties in staying straight. I found the story a bore and a waste of Haysbert’s talent. And I never understood Mann’s decision to include Waingro’s murder of a teenage prostitute. Hanna and his team had never linked the murder to Waingro. Nor did the crime have an impact upon the movie’s plot, except force Hanna to abandon a dinner party with his squad and their wives . . . and give Justine another excuse to complain about his job. One last subplot seemed useless to me. It featured Hanna and McCauley’s only meeting at a local diner near, where each man examined the other and revealed that they would not hesitate to kill the other if the situation demands it. And while I must admit that Pacino and De Niro gave top notch performances, the entire scene struck me as a . . . waste . . . of . . . time. The only thing this entire scene had served was a chance to allow Pacino and De Niro to share one scene together.
I realized that I had written so much about the movie’s plot that I nearly forgotten about the performances. Fortunately, Mann had cast the movie with talented actors and actresses and I cannot fault any one of them. I realize much has been said about Al Pacino’s tendency to engage in theatrical acting. In other words, he can be a ham. He certainly was a ham in ”HEAT”. But the thing about Pacino is that he can be subtle or he can be a ham . . . with style. Which is why I am willing to give him a pass on some of his hammier moments. But I cannot deny that Vincent Hanna may be one of his best roles. Whereas Pacino’s Hanna is all fire and theatrics, De Niro’s Neil McCauley is quiet intensity. His McCauley must be one of the most subtle performances he has ever given. I cannot even remember a scene where he had raised his voice, let alone mugged for the camera. There were other performances that also impressed me - Mykelti Williamson as the no-nonsense Sergeant Drucker, one of Hanna’s teammates; Tom Siezemore as McCauley’s most loyal henchman, Michael Cheritto; Jon Voight as Nate, McCauley’s pragmatic fence; and Diane Verona as Hanna’s embittered wife, Justine. Yes I had complained about her character, but I must admit that Verona gave a memorable performance. However, I have to give special kudos to Natalie Portman’s emotional performance as Hanna’s suicidal stepdaughter who is desperate for her real father’s attention; and to Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd, who managed to give complex performances as Chris and Charlene Shiherlis – one of McCauley’s colleagues and his wife. Despite their constant clashes over his gambling habit and her brief foray into adultery with a Las Vegas resident named Alan Marciano (Hank Azaria), Kilmer and Judd made it clear that these two loved each other . . . especially in a quiet and tense scene that featured Charlene giving fugitive Chris a silent warning to stay away, due to the presence of nearby police.
As much as I admire Michael Mann as a director, there is one aspect of his filmmaking that turns me off – namely his cinematic view of Los Angeles. I tend to find this view cold and antiseptic. I have noticed this in both ”HEAT” and his 2004 thriller, ”COLLATERAL”. Hell, Mann’s view of Chicago in ”PUBLIC ENEMIES” struck me as ten times more colorful. Considering that Mann is from Chicago, I am not surprised. Mind you, cinematographer Dante Spinotti captured some memorable shots of Los Angeles – including one breathtaking one of the city at night from McCauley’s Hollywood Hills home. But it still came off as slightly chilly. Mann’s view of Los Angeles is probably a reflection of his view of the city . . . which is completely opposite of my own. I did find Pasquale Buba, William Goldenberg, Dov Hoenig and Tom Rolf’s editing very impressive; especially in the downtown shootout. But there is one technical aspect of ”HEAT” that really knocked my socks off. I am speaking of Elliot Goldenthal’s score. Granted, most of Goldenthal’s score failed to make an impression upon me. However . . . his score for the bank robbery sequence was more than memorable. I enjoyed the way Goldenthal used percussion instruments to underscore the scene’s growing tension that finally exploded into violence when Chris Shirherlis spotted cops and Hanna’s team waiting outside of the bank. For me, the entire sequence featured a perfect blend of music and action.
To repeat myself, ”HEAT” is not a perfect movie, despite its reputation. I consider Mann’s septic view of Los Angeles to be one of the movie’s minor flaws. But its major flaw seemed to be the numerous subplots that had nothing to do with the movie’s main narrative. A flaw that ended up dragging the movie’s pacing in many scenes. But despite these flaws, Mann still managed to create an exciting and complex story about two men – a methodical thief and an intuitive police detective – whose cat-and-mouse game engulfed those in their lives and an entire city. It is this cat-and-mouse game that made ”HEAT” a modern Hollywood classic.

THE cop who was covered in his own pool of blood from his gunshot wound, was now practically sticking to the dusty warehouse ramp. He laid there for a good fifteen minutes, maybe more or less, who was there to count? His company wasn’t making things better, either. “Listen to me, Marvin... listen to me, Marvin Nash, I’m a cop.”
“Yeah, I know.” The other bloodied cop, Marvin Nash, was tied up and had his ear cut off by Mr. Blonde, all he could do was bicker and moan in pain and rage.
“You do?” The first cop asks.
“Yeah, your name’s Freddy something.”
“Newandyke,” he said. “Freddy Newandyke.”
“Frankie Ferchetti introduced us about five months ago.”
Freddy shakes his head. His wound definitely didn’t cause him memory loss. He was just too clueless to acknowledge colleagues, that was something he was aware of and he needed to work on it. “Shit, I don't remember that at all.”
“I do.” Marvin Nash coughs a bit of blood. “Freddy. How do I look?”
Freddy winces out a chuckle. “What? I don't know what to tell you, Marvin.” How do you look? If I told you, I’d be lucky you’re tied up.
“That fuck. That sick fuck! That fuckin' bastard!”
“Marvin, I need you to hold on. There's cops waiting to move a block away.”
“What the fuck are they waiting for? This fuckin' guy, he slashes my face… and cuts my fuckin' ear off! I'm fuckin' deformed!” Marvin cries out.
Freddy clenches his jaw. How the fuck do you think I feel over here, asshole? “FUCK YOU! Fuck you, my love of my fucking life is gone! I’m fuckin’ dyin’ here! Y/N is gone and I’m fuckin’ dyin’!”
Marvin Nash, a bloodied cop who was now “fucking deformed”, really had no idea how bad the fellow cop’s current state was. Both of them were in pain, but one of them was gonna die first.
Freddy calms down a bit to explain the upcoming events he hopes to happen anytime soon. He was bleeding pretty bad, and it hurt like hell. “They're not to make a move 'til Joe Cabot shows up. I was sent in to get him. Alright? You heard 'em. They said he's on his way.” Marvin lets out a soft breath. Relief was touching a bit of his soul, now all is left is to wait it out, and listen to the sounds of rattling bullets and yells from cops out of one ear.
“Don't pussy out on me now, Marvin,” Freddy says. “We're just gonna sit here and bleed… 'til Joe Cabot sticks his fuckin' head through that door.”
Marvin whimpers, then takes a long pause. “Freddy?”
Freddy looks up at Marvin Nash once more, lying on his arm for support, his body feeling like a throbbing stubbed toe. “Freddy?” Marvin talks about the giant elephant in the room. “What even fucking happened?”
THE last thing Freddy needed was to end up falling for you while he’s undercover. While he’s good at hiding his true identity from the recruits, he was also good at hiding it from you, but it wasn’t what he wanted in the first place.
Freddy would never lie to you, but you don’t know that your boyfriend is actually a cop and not a cool bad boy that took care of weed for customers. It pained Freddy to lie to you about who he was. He never even told you that his name was Freddy, only to refer to him as his alias, Mr. Orange, but you paid no mind to it. You loved the mysterious thrill he had, even if that meant calling him a color most commonly known in a fruit.
To this day, he still wonders why you would want to date someone with such a dangerous persona. You made a living working at the same store the recruits were planning the heist at -  Karina’s Wholesale Diamonds, and you were allowed to wear the jewelry that was sold and refined there. You never came to think Mr. Orange was ever gonna steal from you, holding you at gunpoint? Rob your store while his face is covered then he kisses you goodnight hours after?
And so, Freddy’s confession and his first and last fight with you happened the night before the heist. A stressful twelve hours, and it all started with you throwing his police badge on the coffee table, right on top of his Marvel catalog.
“You’ve been staring at that thing for a whole minute now,” you said, standing stiff as a statue, towering over him on the couch.
Mr. Orange scrunches his nose. “It was from a cop back in Torrance. The fucker most likely lost his job for carelessly leaving it on a bench.”
“You’ve visited Torrance?”
He nodded. “Y/N, I kept that badge in one of my stashes. You and I agreed to not go through each other’s shit like that - y’know, outta respect?”
“I know that, but you asked me to get your TV guide from one of the drawers. You said you keep it next to your stash, I may not have found pot but I definitely found that.” You nod at the badge.
Orange shrugs. “I don’t know what to tell you, babes, but that ain’t mine. Also I ran outta weed, that’s why I haven’t been making any sales lately.”
“You must suck at reeling customers in,” you took out your other hand hidden behind your back, now throwing four poorly folded sheets of paper stapled together right next to the badge. “Otherwise why the hell would you have this; an annotated script about you delivering weed to people, the same words you told me about how you walked into the men’s room with a big bag of weed in front of a couple of  cops and a dog?”
Orange was silent. You knew he was lying. Silence was as painful as spewing out another lie. Not once has there ever been a close call, but now he was trapped with no words to come out his mouth. Even if he did have something to say, each lie he told you felt like he was throwing daggers at your heart. He couldn’t take it anymore.
“Orange, is there something you’re not telling me?” Orange merely frowned and got up from the couch, eyeing you up and down. He looked tired from whatever he did the whole day and resting on the couch while watching a movie on the TV was well needed. That, but he was tired of sleeping next to you while a police badge was taunting him in one of the drawers.
“I don’t sell weed, y/n. And the police badge wasn’t from Torrance.”
“So all of that... you smuggling weed in a bowling bag?” you scoff, feeling your blood boil. “You just made that up?”
“Y/n- baby” he starts.
“What the hell? Why would you make that up?” you ask.
“It’s what I had to do,” Orange says.
You scoff. “Right. That was your way of making friends or to get free drinks, or even getting me to sleep with you?”
“It’s not like that, it was never like that.”
“This is so fucked up!” Hearing you say that made Freddy’s heart fall into a thousand pieces. “Tell me the truth, Orange, if that’s even your fucking name. Who gives birth, looks at their child and goes, ‘Your name is Orange’? As if your kid won’t ever get bullied from that.”
“That’s because that isn’t my fucking name. It’s an alias.”
You shook your head. “Okay, then. Who the fuck are you?”
He clenched his eyes shut, and opened them, wishing you disappeared out of his sight. “Look at my badge.”
You slowly hunched over the table, picking up the badge. You raised a brow at him.
“I want you to hold it while I tell you. My real name is Freddy Newandyke. I’m working undercover for a diamond heist formed by Joe Cabot... the group of criminals he hired are gonna rob your store, stuff a briefcase full of diamonds worth a college tuition, and they’re gonna break it apart, pawn it, whatever fulfills their need.”
“You’re a cop,” you say, confirming what he said was true. Otherwise, that could have been another lie.
He nodded. “I work for the LAPD.”
“What else?”
A pause, then he traces his finger on your hand before curling it with his. “I love you.” His face softens. “My name’s Freddy Newandyke. I’m a cop. The gang I’m undercover for is gonna rob your store tomorrow, and I love you.”
You slowly nodded, looking down at the badge in your other hand. There were no signs of a lie in his tone of voice. His name seems legit, and of course, you loved him, too. “Why didn’t you tell me... Freddy?”
“Because you go after guys that would do the things I told in my story, fellas who you fantasize of having a fucking Bonnie and Clyde ride or die bullshit with, and not me - a cop who geeks out over Marvel.”
“You’re saying my work is being targeted for a heist?” you said. “And you’re part of it?”
Freddy nodded. “You think I’m ever gonna rob you, lie to your face like that? Then walk out of your life, take off just like that - and never see you again?”
“You’ve been lying to me.”
“I’m sorry for lying to you, and whether I told you about who I was or not, I don’t want you involved. Crime gets you in trouble, being undercover puts you in danger,” Freddy kisses your forehead. “You can get caught stealing and smuggling drugs, you can get caught slipping out of character if you’re not careful. You can’t win.”
You tried walking around the couch to disperse into the kitchen, but Freddy stopped in front of you. “I wasn’t born yesterday, asshole. I know what an undercover cop is, if your cover gets blown, you’re fucked.” You crossed your arms. “So what else is gonna happen?”
“We planned this; cops are gonna show up on time, as long as a gun doesn’t go off, we’ll be okay, and the men will be in cuffs as well as Joe Cabot. But listen to me, I don’t want you to show up to work tomorrow, I don’t want you there, I don’t want to have a man in a suit point a gun at your face, and I definitely don’t want you to be a hero,” Freddy says, cupping both your cheeks. “That’s my job.”
“I’m freakin’ pissed at you, but I’m not gonna stay home.” You took his hands off your face.
“I’d rather let myself get caught by a bunch of criminals than have your life threatened by criminals.”
“You’re willing to do that?”
“Anything for you.”
“I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“Getting hurt is part of the job. Y/n, you can’t be a hero. Not like that.”
“Freddy-”
“Y/n, please.” Freddy begs, his face tightening. “If you can’t forgive me; if you can’t trust me anymore, then you can hate me all you want. But for fuck’s sake, at least call in sick tomorrow.”
Yet, you were so stubborn, that was something you needed to work on. Freddy knew it, too. You didn’t listen. The day came, and you showed up, anyway, not wanting to live knowing the guy you loved no matter who he claimed he was. He was in charge of standing at the door, not allowing anyone access inside or out. But upon seeing you behind the counter through the glass window, you saw Freddy’s face drop. “No…”
The deafening sound of the alarm goes off by one of the retailers, forcing Mr. Blonde to shoot everyone he saw, including you.
Freddy cried out this time, “No!”
People inside- the employees and customers, all screamed together. Freddy slammed his hands against the display windows, watching you as you fall back onto the floor, bleeding out from your shoulder. Mr. Blonde nearly shot everyone in the room, even almost hitting Mr. White in the process. He spotted your foot sticking out, and you attempted to crawl away, but he pointed his gun at you again.
Just as planned, the police break in, prompting him to run away. You collapsed in your pool of blood, realizing how this was straight out of a crime movie scene, and the pain of your wound was inexplicable. How could you feel it with every inch in your body and still manage to move ever so slightly?
You looked back, realizing you were all alone, the only one left alive. Freddy didn’t do what a hero would have done, and escaped with the men, holding back his tears with his dear life behind the dark shades of his sunglasses, fighting to stay in character.
He had to assume the more logical conclusion; you were treated at the hospital, or you bleed to death back at that jewelry wholesale, and you died hating him.
Whether you knew him as a criminal or an undercover cop, you were going to show up, anyway, because you want to protect him, like any kind of Bonnie and Clyde you’d expect from movies. Except Bonnie and Clyde were both shot to death. In this world, Clyde escapes - Bonnie was left to bleed out.
FREDDY stared up at Marvin Nash. Does Freddy regret accepting the undercover mission? A brave young man like him took such a dangerous job, but he knew he was better off without it. The last thing he said to you swarmed his mind like bees; “Call in sick tomorrow.”
THE END
