Hello hello hello
If I wanted fic rec list from you would you do it?? 🥺👉🏻👈🏻
oh jeez, I can try!
here’s a disclaimer, though:
this list won’t be long, AND there are lots of fics that are just masterfully created that I won’t include, either because I haven’t read them (because I’m actually prodigiously bad at going out to find new fics to read!) or because they aren’t ones I’ll reread (I have read fics that have punched me in the chest and left me thinking about them for months afterward, but won’t reread them).
also, I read one book a week last year and didn’t have a ton of time for fic reading instead, so I’m DEFINITELY not up to date on the fic scene. this list is pretty much just my “classics I’ll reread at the drop of a hat” list, alright?
also ALSO, fair warning: my favorites are kind of basic 🥴 I love angst but I hate a sad ending, so I promise you a happy ending in each of these.
my two holy grail fics are:
The Salt King
a tale of love lost and found again. mythical creatures, remembered pasts, reincarnation, and hockey. genuinely hits so many checkmarks on my “things I love in fic” list: mutual pining, geno circling sid like a shark, some delicious angst moments, slow burn all the way to hell. I evangelize for this fic and will not rest until everyone’s read it.
and And Never Been Kissed.
you know it, you love it. this seminal sidgeno fic is a monster, clocking it at over 150,000 words, and it’s just such a sweet feel-good story that I come back to reread every few months or so. formative fic for me, for sure.
a theme you’ll notice in here is that I really love non-linear narratives and time travel. following off of The Salt King, we get these two fics:
With Closed Eyes
sid dreams of the future, and when he dreams of the future, he dreams of geno. I love myself some heartsick Sid, and oh, we get that here. this fic sometimes makes me dizzy with how well Hazel yanks you back and forth through time. a real treat.
and Welcome Home
geno travels through time against his will, disappearing from one decade to the next at the drop of a hat... unless he’s on the ice, where he’s safe. when he winds up in a dingy shed in cole harbour, though, he meets a brave little boy named sidney who has a lot of questions for him. wonderful fic about sid and geno navigating a past that sid remembers and geno doesn’t.
you probably know and love them, but The Work of Wings and something real or something wonderful are fandom classics for good reason. also, Reverence is theeeeee sidgeno a/b/o fic, of course, and it’s tropey and very fun. I’m a sucker for omega!sid and I’m working hard on producing more content for it, I promise.
I’m also going to toss two ovechkin/backstrom fics at you, because these two fics do things that I haven’t seen in sidgeno fics and I’m obsessed with them, even though I VERY rarely read for this pairing.
The Brook Horse is a dark tale about nicke, a shapeshifter desperate for human life and connection as he struggles to keep his hockey-playing human form and ward off his supernatural impulses. I love the internal journey he goes on in this fic and the tension and writing is ace.
The Woman in Blue is basically original fiction with ovi and backstrom’s names on it, but it hits so many things I love in fiction. religiosity, darkness, werewolves, back-breaking tension, BEAUTIFULLY lyrical writing. this one won’t be for everyone but it blows me away.
I’m sorry this is all I have to offer; I’m really bad at seeking out new fics to read, and very good at rereading my favorites time and time again like a kid slamming back their favorite meal every night. again, I’ve read so many fics that have left almost-permanent marks on me, and not all of them are on here.
I highly recommend al-the-remix’s fic rec masterlist, as they’re SO well-read and have a great memory for it (which is another thing I lack). happy fic hunting!
