Grog’s strength comes when he realizes that he’s trusted.
It’s definitely also because his friends are there to fight when he calls but just as much of it comes from the fact that Pike calls for him and doesn’t turn away when he can’t answer. She just keeps calling because in that moment she trusts him more than he trusts himself.
For Grog, reciprocal trust was something learned from the Trickfoots. Its a relatively new concept to him. The only kinds of trust in the tribe are blind trust that the Thunderlord will lead the herd in the right direction, and a begrudging trust that the people fighting next to you won’t be the ones to kill you. If you’re lucky they might go so far as to keep you from dying once in a while. That’s as far as it goes.
Being able to fully trust a team and to be fully trusted in return is different. With Vox Machina there’s no risk that they will leave if he shows weakness. There’s no chance that they’ll leave him behind or judge him for his heart. And that’s a huge part of Grog’s success in the Killbox.
The other half is realizing that even when he doesn’t trust himself he is still trusted by his friends. Even when his strength isn’t what it could be there’s no less trust in him. They believe he will be there and do his best to help no matter what state he’s in. They trust him to act.
Knowing that his friends don’t think any less of him, knowing they still trust him, that’s not something Grog would ever take for granted. It’s not implicit for him. This is different and special and worth fighting for. And it’s what Grog needed to bring him back to himself.
