Hey Meat! Currently combing through Matt Clayton’s Hindu Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Hindu Myths, Hindu Gods, and Hindu Goddesses and I was wondering if you could give like a little introduction to the main concepts/gods/goddesses? I’m seeing many terms like “the Veedas�� and “the Shastras” as I go through it and I’m picking up context clues and I could probably google them but I’d like to hear from actual people and especially those who know and care deeply about these Myths (like you <3). So… can you help me? /gen

Heyyy Neptune! First of all I apologize it took me so long to answer you dfnsfjfdjg forgive meeee

I love how ardently you're researching Hinduism. I haven't really read his book, but I'll help you with giving you an overview of it, so to speak.

Firstly lemme tell you about the Vedic knowledge system, which consists of:

Vedas

Vedangas

Upavedas

Vedas: These are the oldest known scriptures of Hinduism. The religion has four Vedas, namely the:

Rig Veda (RV): book of hymns to the deities.

Yajur Veda (YV): book of mantras and worship rituals

Sama Veda (SV): book of chanting songs

Atharva Veda (AV): book of procedures of everyday life

Each of them have four subdivisions:

Samhitas (mantras, hymns, prayers and benedictions)

Brahmanas (explanations and instructions on performing Vedic rituals)

Aranyakas (texts on the meaning and symbolisms of rituals and ceremonies basically). They were mainly composed by sages who meditated in the wilderness, hence the name of the texts (aranya means forest in Sanskrit).

Upanishads (texts on meditation, philosophy and spiritual knowledge)

Upasanas (additional). These are texts on worship.

Vedangas: These are the six auxiliary disciplines of Hinduism, and are heavily linked to the Vedas. They are:

Shiksha: Study of phonetics

Vyakarana: Study of grammar

Chhandas: Study of poetic metres and rhythm

Niruktas: Study of etymology

Jyotishya: Study of astrology and astronomy

Kalpa: Study of rituals and guide to ritual instructions

Upavedas: These are texts regarding certain fields of work like:

Ayur Veda: Study of medicine and life sciences

Gandharva Veda: Study of music, art and dance

Dhanur Veda: Study of archery and warfare

Arthashastra: Study of business and administration

Speaking of Shastras, they are kinda similar to Upavedas, and deal with certain fields of knowledge, like we saw in the case of Arthashastra. There are many shastras:

Bhautikashastra - Study of physics

Rasashastra - Study of chemistry

Jivashastra - Study of biology

Vastushastra - Study of architectural science

Shilpashastra - Study of mechanical arts and sculpture

Nitishastra - Corpus on ethics and policies

Alamkarashastra - Study of rhetorics

Kavyashastra - Study of poetics

Sangitashastra - Study of music

Natyashastra - Study of theatre and dance

Yogashastra - contains instructions and teachings on yoga

Mokshashastra - contains instructions and teachings on moksha

Nyayashastra - contains instructions and teachings on justice, laws and judgement

Dharmashastra - contains instructions and teachings on dharma

Kamashastra - contains instructions and teachings on love, desire and pleasure.

And so on.

Then we have the Puranas, which are texts on various topics, usually legends and lores. A few examples are:

Brahma Purana

Vishnu Purana

Matsya Purana

Kalika Purana

Vamana Purana

Shiva Purana

Agni Purana

Bhagavata Purana

And so on. The latest Purana ever written was the Kalki Purana, which was around 400-600 years ago. It is believed that Ved Vyasa (the author* of the epic Mahabharata) composed all these Puranas as well. But many disagree.

*some believe Ved Vyas got Ganesh (the God of wisdom, success and remover of obstacles, and the son of Shiva) to write the Mahabharata for him. While some believe Ved Vyas wrote it himself.

Then we have the Sutras which are aphoristic (concise expression of a general truth/principle) texts. Some examples are:

Brahma Sutras

Yoga Sutras

Nyaya Sutras

Kama Sutra

and so on.

Then comes Itihasa (historical texts), which include the two major epics of Hinduism, namely:

Ramayana (composed by Valmiki)

Mahabharata (composed my Vyasa/Ganesh)

Read the epics I'll not spoil it for ya heehee

Now, for the Gods. Oh man there are so many, but not 33 crore (1 crore = 10 million), contrary to popular belief, but rather 33 types.

In the very beginning of the pantheon, the main Gods were:

Indra (god of thunder and rain and the King of Gods)

Agni (god of fire)

Mitra (god of friendship, sun, daylight)

Varuna (god of waters, oceans, night time)

Vayu (wind god)

Soma (wind god, also sometimes called the moon god)

Ushas (goddess of dawn)

Ashwins (twin solar gods of medicine and sons of Surya)

Surya (Sun god)

Rudra (another wind/storm god who later became another form of Shiva)

Vishnu (bro doesn't have any specific assigned field tbh)

And a few others like Brihaspati (Jupiter god), Pushan (solar god of meetings, marriages, roads and cattle), Savitr (god of speed and cosmos) and many others.

Now there was this supreme vague deity in the Vedas. It's not Brahman yet. They (for the lack of a better set of pronouns) appear later. But it is some kind of supernatural force that let to the creation of this universe, and was initially mostly referred to as Prajapati (sometimes it wasn't one being though, rather a group), from what I can infer. Some may even called em Purusha. In the link you'll also get the First Creation Myth of Hinduism.

There is also an agnostic section in the Rig Veda, known as the Nasadiya Sukta. In this specific section we know there's some form of a supreme deity, but it's very vague as to what it is.

Moving on, in around mid-Vedic period, Vishnu became heavily popular, and two new deities came into being, namely Brahma (who soon got the title of Prajapati) and Shiva (from Rudra because previously Rudra had an alternative name called Siva. So Ig that's where 'Shiva' stemmed from. But again not sure).

Vishnu and Shiva became extremely popular, to the point that they got an entire sect of people dedicated to each of em, hence Vaishnavism and Shaivism (respectively) were born. Vaishnavs heralded Vishnu to be the Supreme God, while Shaivites heralded Shiva to be the Supreme God. (Soon Harihar or Vishnu-Shiva sect also emerged where both the Gods were considered the same, and hence both were the Supreme Gods, or Supreme God, if we consider them one entity) But in the future we can see Vaishnavism took over the spotlight, and finally during the age of the epics, Sanatan Dharma was born, which eventually became synonymous with Hinduism, and now almost everyone considers Vishnu is the Supreme Lord (while many others consider it to be the Brahman, who Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma are a part of).

Vishnu actually gained the most popularity from the two epics that I've mentioned, and the first one is almost entirely surrounded around his avatar, Ram (yes he has avatars now). His most popular avatars include Ram and Krishna, and the latter has an entire organization dedicated to him (ISKON or International Society for Krishna Consciousness), and this org considers THIS avatar as the Supreme Lord, and actually considers Vishnu as his avatar, not the other way around. Krishna also appears in the famous Bhagavad Gita, which is the prime philosophy book of guidelines for the Hindus today.

Buckle up, it's about to get more confusing cuz now Vishnu is our main character for a while (bro has HEAVILY influenced this religion atp there's no turning back for him now). His evolution is so interesting cuz who'd have thought in the Rig Vedic times that he'd grow up to be THIS popular TOT. Not Indra for sure xD.

Anyhoo so about Vishnu's avatars. He has ten main avatars that appear through the cycle of Hindu Yugas (eras):

Matsya: Big fishiee. Some paintings portray him as a merman tho.

Kurma: Giant tortoise go brrr.

Varaha: A boar-man :D. Pumba's gunna vibe with him fs.

Narasimha: Very angy lion-man. Will be besties with Sekhmet in a heartbeat i just know it.

Vamana: Cute "lil" dwarf (covered the universe in three steps)

Parshurama: Appears in the Mahabharata

Rama: Main character of Ramayana (hence the name), and is the younger brother of Balarama.

Krishna: One of the main characters of the Mahabharata

Balarama/Buddha (sources vary)

Kalki (future avatar)

Now Mohini is the female form of Vishnu. Whether or not she counts as an avatar is debated. She's the goddess of beauty and a seductress that lures bad guys (mostly Asuras) and then kills them, or atleast teaches them a lesson (but she also attracts the devas sometimes. Shiva for example). So yeah.

His wife is Lakshmi, who's the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, beauty, fertility and prosperity. She also has avatars btw.

Now the Second Creation Myth is pretty messy. Different sects have different takes on it. Usually it is considered that:

Brahma created the universe (or universes in case of the multiverse version).

Vishnu preserves the universe

Shiva destroys the universe

This process is considered cyclic and after the destruction Brahma creates a new universe, and it keeps repeating.

The origin of these three gods are also debated. Some say Brahma created Vishnu and Shiva, some say Vishnu created Brahma and Shiva, some say Lakshmi created Brahma, some say Shiva created Brahma and Vishnu. Some say Vishnu and Shiva are two of the Adityas (comprising of Indra, Agni, Mitra, Varuna, Surya etc.), and hence the children of Kashyap and Aditi.

Quick desc of Shiva is that he's the god of destruction, rebirth, time, benevolence etc. He also has avatars, plus a female form, called Shivani. His wife is Parvati, who ALSO has avatars, primarily Kali, Durya, Gauri etc. Sometimes Parvati and Lakshmi's avatars overlap. Sometimes, Vishnu and Parvati's avatars overlap (like Krishna-Kali).

He and his wife have two sons- Ganesha (god of wisdom, beginnings, remover of obstacles etc.), and Kartikeya/Murugun/Skanda (god of war). Who's the elder one is debated but usually Kartikeya is considered older.

Also Brahma's wife is Saraswati (goddess of wisdom, knowledge, music, flowing water, abundance etc.), who was born from him. Bro has faced some issues with falling for ppl (women) he has created actually lol, which is why he was cursed by Shiva and even lost one of his heads, hence ending up with four heads, when he initially had five. Check this site out as to why he was cancelled by Mahadev (another name of Shiva).

Now we have two Holy Trinities:

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva (However, Vishnu and Shiva are way closer to Indra, while Brahma's kinda like the dad of the group, yk)

Saraswati, Lakshmi, Parvati

Then we have the Devas and the Asuras, who can be compared to the Aesir and Vanir, in a way. The Devas are usually the benevolent one, who attained the amrit (elixir), while the Asuras are usually the antagonists. But tbh, in my opinion, both of these groups are morally grey as fock.

Parents of Asuras (Rishi/sage Kashyapa and Diti)

Diti and Aditi and daughters of king Daksha (one of the Prajapatis). The reason the Asuras turned out the way they did was cuz Diti approached Kashyap at an unholy hour, to put it shortly. Sources say she was also jealous of how Aditi's kids turned out, which might be another factor to how her kids turned out in turn (lot of 'turn's we're getting ahah)

They are described well in the Samudra Manthan, from the Vishnu Purana. Have a look.

Now see, this stark contrast between the Devas and the Asuras didn't quite exist back in the earliest Rig-Vedic period. In fact, some of the most prominent Devas were referred to as Asuras in the Rig Veda, most famously Varuna, who was actually referred to as the leader of the Asuras/Asuryas. Other Devas who got referred to as Asuras include Indra, Agni, Mitra, and a few others. So I have a feeling the concept of the modern-day Asuras didn't quite exist back then.

Now for the concepts of Hinduism, like Moksha, Dharma etc., I think I'll refer to actual practising Hindus to explain it to you, since they'd be able to explain them in a much better way. They can also add to my explanations of things, or correct me if I explained anything wrong. So I'mma tag em.

Mandalorians!

Their culture is an integral part to the clones, especially the older generation clones like Cody and Rex, I'd like to know more about how they fit into this universe and how they contribute to it.

Everything from their songs (which they ahve a lot of) to their weapons (again, they have quite a bit of this). How does beskar fit into all this? What of the Kryze sisters and Korkie? And Death Watch? Jango and Boba Fett? The Cuy'val Dar and how they trained the troopers?

Oh! And what about our beloved Kamas?

Just...splurge about the Mandos to me

:DDDDDD YESSS SO MANY QUESTIONS LET ME ANSWER THEM ALL

Okay! So. Part one. Mandos. Let's go. I'm gonna zero in on a few specific things about Mandalorian culture here, because across the AU I tend not to change a lot of established, canon lore in terms of detraction. I (usually) operate on a policy of "keep everything that's canon, adapt certain things to fit a fantasy aesthetic rather than a science fiction one, and add whatever I think is cool". For an example of what I mean by this, I'd advise you to go check out my post about Togrutas in the AU.

With this being said, that means that the established Mandalorian culture is pretty much the same as in canon. Therefore, I am choosing to highlight the additions I have made and several adaptations to existing cultural items and practices.

One more thing to keep in mind: as made abundantly clear by this point, in HFSW the Mandalorians are based upon Ancient Rome. I cannot promise complete historical accuracy, in fact I will go so far as to not promise any historical accuracy, but as a Latin student, history buff, and the co-consul of my school's Latin Club, it was too perfect an opportunity for me to resist.

Art Forms: Other than their beskar, the Mandalorians are famed for one other art form: their gorgeous stained glass. (This was actually one of the very first things I knew I wanted to add to the AU.) Ever since the island was cursed so many years ago in the Jedi-Mandalorian Crusades and turned mostly to a barren wasteland of sand, the people of Mandalore and its surrounding island territories put their hallmark resilience to the front again: they melted it down and made something of it. Combine that with traditional Mandalorian Color Symbolism, and the glass became almost as important as the beskar'gam itself. By the time of the Clone Wars, it can be found in use for practical purposes (glassware such as cups and vases, as well as the domes of Mandalore Proper's famed domed cities), art (windows and even blown-glass sculptures), and jewelry (some of the more crafty have even found ways to work it into their armor), to name a few examples. In addition, and especially under Satine's rule, other forms of the arts flourish on Mandalore Proper and its island territories, such as frescoes, mosaics, architecture, and theatre.

Gear and Weaponry, specifically Jet Packs: The beskar'gam is still the most important aspect of Mandalorian culture, although- unfortunately- I haven't actually had the time to design what it would look like for the AU yet. (I'm working on it.) It's still made of beskar, beskar is still only found on Mandalorian islands, armorers are still the ones in charge of its creation and maintenance, et cetera. Mandalorians fight with almost all weaponry found under the sun, although the vast majority of them favor spears and javelins, or knives (mostly daggers, although throwing knives are not unheard of). The Darksaber has a serrated blade, and due to its being forged of beskar, when ignited by a force-sensitive it crackles with lightning rather than fire. Jet packs (haven't thought of an appropriately fantasy name for them yet) are a creation of the Mandalorians, and are- essentially- fully-jointed, mechanical wings mounted on a harness. It's very cool. I shall have art of it for you soon, when I actually get around to designing beskar'gam. (As for your question about kamas: I'm gonna answer that when I get around to the more Clone-centric asks. I didn't forget, I'm just saving it for later)

Songs: Mandalorian songs are of wide and varied style and genre, from ballads to elegies to rousing tavern-songs, and every kind in-between. They are written in Basic, Mando'a, or Old Mando'a (though these are usually more traditional, ancient songs; with very few exceptions, more modern songs are not composed in Old Mando'a). I will talk more about songs, though, when I get to your more Clone-centric questions, because song is a hugely important part of Clone Culture in this AU and I want to do most of the heavy lifting there.

Fantastic Beasts One-shot: Far Away from Temple After Sunset

SUMMARY While often a requirement when working against a Seer, under-explained missions still don't always end well... The evening of December 24, 1940 sees Newt and Tina reunited on a bloody battlefield in southern France, and if Newt were properly religious, he'd have attributed their miraculous survival to the day of the year...

OPENING SCENE

December 24, 1940 / Christmas Eve and 1st Night of Hanukkah / Limousin Region, Southwest France

Newt had come onto this particular mission off the tail of another, only stopping at home long enough to drop off his case per instructions before apparating to a bombed theatre in the West End to retrieve the portkey and coordinates Dumbledore had had hidden for him there. He’d worked hard to get back from his last trip in time for the holidays, but once he’d learned Tina was already in France, he decided it didn’t much matter anyway, and thus threw himself into the broken flower-pot portkey on a wing and a prayer.

Consequently, just under three hours ago, he had arrived (already exhausted) into what was—but probably should not yet have been— utter chaos, after which it became quickly apparent that this was either not one of Dumbledore’s more thoroughly strategised plans or, alternatively, someone had regrettably betrayed them...

In the end, they’d taken rather more damage than they’d dealt, and though it had been at least ten minutes now since the ambush had finally petered out in a series of popping disapparitions and poorly timed enemy portkeys, the air was still heavy with the scent of noxious potion bombs and Muggle explosives.

It would be an utter lie to say they were not having trouble locating one another in the aftermath and, to make matters worse, both night and the temperature were quickly falling.

Newt had lost sight of Tina just a handful of minutes before—no more than a quarter hour, he was sure of it. But distracted by a landmine someone’s identification spell had apparently failed to highlight during reconnaissance and that had therefore been triggered by a fleeing acolyte, he’d spent the better part of that time making sure Yusuf didn’t lose an eye from the blast; while simultaneously stymieing the steady flow of blood from his own wounds, tending mainly to the careful removal of the shrapnel lodged far too close to his tibial artery for comfort... He’d frantically woven a bandage out of the Horned Slug mucus packed in the pouch on his belt, before testing Kama’s left-side vision and manoeuvring them both clumsily to their feet.

He shifted under the weight as the man shuffled along beside him, a hand clutching his bandaged face. It was all Newt could do to drag his foot along, too—(something he couldn’t repair on his own was injured, something had clipped a nerve, perhaps – well, definitely - from the mechanics of it)—and he squinted about for his brother, or Tina. Miller or Ramos, or Macmillan.

Anyone.

There was a minute sound from behind an abandoned woodshed at the closest edge of the pockmarked field and Newt froze like a creature under threat, casting a heavy disillusionment charm on him and Kama, before shoving the man behind him to clutch his shoulder for a guide as they continued their wary approach.

A half second later and the woosh of an identification spell shot over him, and Newt’s heart could have stopped then and there, so when Theseus’ head appeared from around the corner of the shack just moments later, he choked on a cry of relief. His brother’s face broke with a tired smile—though tear tracks had cut the dirt on his cheeks from squinting too long through the smoke—upon visually confirming what the spell had already assured him: the Scamanders had made it out alive.

(Or, at least — so far — the original two of them had…)

Bio: Composer. Pyotr Tchaikovsky was a prolific 19th-century Russian composer who has been recognized as one of the most popular all-time composers in the world. He composed seven symphonies, 11 operas, three ballets, five suites, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, 11 overtures, four cantatas, 20 choral works, three string quartets, a string sextet, and more than 100 songs and piano pieces. Many of his pieces have held the test of time and are performed in the 21st century. Born one of six siblings in Kama-Votkinsk, Vyatka Guberniya, in the Ural Mountains of the Russian Empire, he began piano studies at age five and, before he was ten, could read and write French and German. His early musical talents were well-noted. In 1850, he was sent to an all-male school, the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in St. Petersburg, and after graduation in June of 1859, and with his father's support, he was appointed as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice. In 1862, he resigned and enrolled in the newly founded Saint Petersburg Conservatory as one of the school's first students. By 1866, he had relocated to Moscow to accept a professor of harmony position at the Conservatorium of Music in Moscow. With all being well-received, his first symphony, "Winter Daydreams," was performed in Moscow in 1868, his first opera, "The Voyevoda," in 1868, and his second symphony, "Little Russian," in 1872. After retiring from the Conservatory following mental health issues in 1877, one of his best-known ballets, "Lebedinoe Ozero" or "Swan Lake, debuted at the Moscow Imperial Bolshoi Theatre. Although for years, there had been questions about his sexual orientation, in the summer of 1877, he married Antonina Milyukova, a young and naive music student, who had declared her love for him. With homosexuality being illegal in Russia, any mention of his intimate lifestyle was censored in Russia to protect his career. The marriage was over in less than three months, leaving him again mentally and emotionally drained and unable to work. The details of this time are well-documented in his younger brother Modest's three-volume 1902 biography "The Life of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky," along with his own letters being published at a later date. After that experience, Tchaikovsky lived as a bachelor for most of his life. He came under the thirteen-year patronage of Madame Nadezhda von Meck, who gave him a yearly allowance, which allowed him to devote his time to composition. Although he never met her physically, his fourth symphony was dedicated to Madame von Meck. From 1878 to 1885, Tchaikovsky traveled extensively and was well-regarded in Europe as well as in Russia. He presented the "1812 Overture" in 1880. After Nikolai Rubinstein's 1881 death, he composed "Trio in A minor, Op 50", a piano piece "dedicated to the memory of a great artist." In 1893, this piece was used as part of his own funeral. In 1888, Russian Tsar Alexander Alexandrovitch Romanov III granted him a yearly pension. His highly-regarded ballets, "The Sleeping Beauty" and the Christmastime favorite, "The Nutcracker," debuted in 1890 and 1891, respectively. A few days after conducting the premiere of his Sixth Symphony, "Pathétique," Tchaikovsky reportedly died of cholera as his mother did. In the 1980s, many scholars stated that his death was, in fact, a suicide, which was caused by deliberately drinking a glass of contaminated water during a cholera epidemic or ingesting a poison. He was elected in 1892, and sculptor Mark Matveyevich Antokolsky were the only Russians in the French Academy of Fine Arts. In 1893 he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in music from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Tchaikovsky is buried near the northern wall of the cemetery, near fellow composers Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Modest Mussorgsky. His grand upright grave marker is adorned with Ivan Vdovin's two angel sculptures and the bust of Tchaikovsky.

Mychael Danna is an Emmy and Oscar-winning film composer known for his evocative blending of orchestral and electronic music with non-Western traditions. His numerous Genie Award-winning scores for filmmaker and longtime partner Atom Egoyan, as well as his Oscar-winning score for Ang Lee's 2012 film Life of Pi, are among his highly acclaimed compositions. Mycheal Danna At the University of Toronto, Danna developed a penchant for communicating difficult concepts in a way that is musically understandable. He was exposed to early music and global music there, which eventually shaped his style. In 1985, Danna won the school's first-ever "Glenn Gould Composition Award" and started composing music for student theatre companies, beginning his collaborative artistic relationship with Egoyan. Since 1987's Family Viewing, Danna has provided the music for all of Egoyan's movies (1987). The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television awarded Danna Genie Awards for his work on the Egoyan movies Ararat (2002), Felicia's Journey (1999), The Sweet Hereafter (1997), and Exotica (1994), as well as for his Oscar-winning score for the movie Water (2005). After working with Ang Lee on the scores for The Ice Storm (1997) and Ride with the Devil, Danna won the 2013 Golden Globe and the 2013 Oscar for his work on Life of Pi (2012). (1999). A church choir sings in Sanskrit, Indian sitars play French melodies, European instruments play South Asian patterns, and a variety of other musical combinations soar alongside a full studio orchestra in Life of Pi (2012)'s complex soundscape, reflecting a very international story. Along with Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) and Tideland (2005), Bennett Miller's Moneyball (2011) and his Oscar-winning drama Capote (2005), Mira Nair's Vanity Fair (2004), Monsoon Wedding (2001), and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996), and Billy Ray's Breach (2007) and Shattered Glass are other notable collaborations (2003). The Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine (2006), for which Danna was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album, Marc Webb's celebrated romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer (2009), and James Mangold's Oscar-winning picture Girl, Interrupted round out Danna's list of accomplishments (1999). According to Danna, his strategy is to "make music an intrinsic element of the storytelling, not just duplicating what is happening onscreen, but adding unexpected dimension and insight that improve the experience of the director's vision. Since his 1978 debut on the Canadian science-fiction musical "Metal Messiah," composer Mychael Danna has been recognised for hundreds of cinema and television themes. He has collaborated with several of the best Hollywood filmmakers and provided the music for various films directed by Atom Egoyan and Ang Lee. For his score to Lee's 2012 film "The Life of Pi," he received the Academy Award and the Golden Globe, in addition to five Genie Awards in his native Canada. For five years, Danna worked as the resident composer at the McLaughlin Planetarium in Toronto (1987–1992). I felt very, very lucky to be a part of the entire Life of Pi experience, and I speak for the entire cast and crew, even before this, he continued. Ang Lee's film adaption of Yann Martel's book Life Of Pi is unquestionably one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Critics have already hailed it as a visual masterpiece for telling the strange tale of a youngster who is trapped in a lifeboat with just a tiger for company. However, Mychael Danna, the composer, wonders how on earth one goes about writing music for a movie like this. Danna talked to Classic FM's Lucy Coward about the process of writing the movie's score (for which he has since gotten a coveted Golden Globe nomination), how some of the music was inspired by his upbringing, and why staying in his compositional bubble for four months worked so well. In regards to the movie itself, Danna says: "Working on this project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and in a way, my entire career has brought me to this picture." It's difficult to disagree when praise is pouring in and expectations for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards are high.

But I'm gonna tackle this myself in my own words here too

I think there are some questionable choices as far as it goes for the jokes about the Kamabakka kingdom and it being played for horror and using gross stereotypes for gags (I know it's intended to punish Sanji for his lecherousness but it's just not good)

However

As far as Iva and Bon-chan go, I will defend them WITH MY LIFE

So okay Ivankov IS based on Dr. Frank-N-Furter, yes but was also inspired by the real life actor and drag queen Norio Imamura, who Oda met via Luffy's VA Mayumi Tanaka who was part of the same theatre group. Oda misheard his name and ended up calling him "Iwa-san" by accident, which is the origin of the name. Norio left such an impression on Oda that he decided to write more drag queen characters into One Piece, and made a character based on him the queen of the drag queens.

Apparently when Norio found out about this he auditioned for the role in the anime and got the role! (although he lost that job later and isn't the current VA for Iva anymore)

So Iva has a very specific real world origin, va (yes I'm using neopronouns for Iva because Iva actually also uses neopronouns in Japanese lol*) isn't just a stereotype, va only exists in the first place because Oda was inspired by a real drag queen he met

(* okay Japanese pronouns don't work the same way as English pronouns, in Japanese pronouns are coded based on the gender or social status of the speaker not the person who's being referenced, Iva uses the pronoun "vatashi" instead of the usual "watashi" which is probably mostly a gag about vas name and the stereotypical "Transylvanian" accent referring to Frank-N-Furter, but it also serves to make vas gender coding more ambiguous)

Also Iva is just absolutely iconic and funny, and A REVOLUTIONARY. I can't even imagine the Revolutionary Army without Iva anymore, what an amazing addition

Iva's New Kama Land also introduces the trend of pretty much all the explicitly queer characters in One Piece being rebels or revolutionaries or pirates, which is definitely an interesting theme. The series never really dwelves into the question of homophobia, but there's definitely implications about how many queer people there are in prison and considering the whole totalitarian government thing it kinda adds up. Queerness is constantly associated with resistance to oppression in One Piece

I genuinely think Iva is a loving tribute to drag queens, specifically Norio Imamura, and I promise you if you give van a chance, it'll make sense. Va is a hero and an icon and an inspiration for others to fight for their own freedom, and also absolutely hilarious and va fits perfectly into the tone of One Piece.

Bon Kurei*, AKA Bon-chan, AKA Bentham, was introduced a lot earlier, literally in the 1990's which obviously wasn't a great time for queer representation, lbr. And yeah they're a stereotype in a lot of ways, including literally having the powers to deceive others by taking different forms, etc.

(* the official English translation is Bon Clay but I'm pedantic, the name is a reference to kure AKA the end of the year celebrations (roughly the latter half of December))

But the thing is that while they start out as a villain, technically, the first time the Straw Hats meet Bon Kurei, they immediately become friends, not knowing they're on opposite sides. The actual war drives them apart for obvious reasons, but afterwards Bon Kurei comes to their rescue, helps them escape from the Navy and finally sacrifices themself for the Straw Hats

So they're almost immediately presented as a sympathetic character who just happened to be on the wrong side, and who became a true friend. Very similar to Robin who was also part of Baroque Works and then ended up joining the Straw Hats by the end of the arc

And then Luffy of course meets Bon Kurei again in Impel Down and they help each other out, although Bon Kurei ends up once again sacrificing themself and staying behind, but this time as the new queen of New Kama Land. And they did technically achieve their goal of freeing Iva, with Luffy's help

They do tend to sacrifice themself a lot, but as they say: queer never die <3

I mean you can have a lot of opinions and even criticisms of them, but they're such a beloved character and a true friend of the Straw Hats

And of course these two aren't the only trans characters in One Piece, nor are the Kamabakka girls or the New Kama Landers

In the Wano arc (which was written a lot later than Alabasta and Impel Down) we get Kiku who is just a very beautiful trans woman samurai. Her story is very straightforward and her identity mostly comes up twice: firstly just the reveal that she is a samurai, which is clearly a male profession in Wano, and secondly when she's relieved to get to bathe with the other women instead of her fellow samurai at the end of the arc. Other than that, she's just another one of the Red Scabbards along with the others

Kiku looks and behaves like any other woman, aside from the fact that she's a samurai and uses the speech patterns of a samurai (which Zoro immediately notes as strange and why he's quick to figure out that she is a swordswoman and doesn't have any patience for her pretence of being just an ordinary villager)

And then there's Yamato my beloved <3

Look, I know a LOT OF PEOPLE think Yamato is bad representation because if trans man then why boobs (as if there's a lot of access to top surgery on Onigashima, on which he was imprisoned for pretty much his entire life because of his abusive dad) or because the reason he gave for "deciding" to become a man was because he idolised Oden

But here's the thing: who the fuck cares

Loads of trans men realise they want to be men because they see a particular man who inspires them and go "I want to be him"

And not all trans men can get top surgery. Not all trans men WANT top surgery

It's not even him "presenting" as female, he's wearing masculine clothes, he's just pretty. (It really annoys me when people say he's "not presenting as masculine"; he is! He's just not binding and he just happens to look very conventionally feminine (aside from being absurdly tall like his dad and also half of the Wano characters in general))

I mean if you wanna complain about the sideboob, I'm not gonna argue, but I'm gonna be real: I can deal with the sideboob because I love him so much.

Yes, the fact that everybody mistakes him for a woman is played of laughs, but at the end of the day everybody does just accept that yeah he's a guy with boobs. People do kinda make fun of him for his insistence that he's Oden but to be fair he is a bit of a weird guy about it. Then again we're talking about One Piece, this is pretty tame all things considered

Honestly though a bigger deal with him is the fact that his dad is Kaidou, who is a big bad villain man so Yamato kinda ends up having to convince every person he meets that he genuinely is on their side and hates his dad. And even now in the most recent chapter we saw him getting some backlash from the people of Wano for being Kaidou's son, so we'll see how that goes

Anyway, Yamato also gets to take a bath with the men like Kiku does with the women, and only the pervert characters are weird about it, everybody else is just like okay cool

He's also very much playing the role of a male character in the story, he's one of the very few fighters strong enough to face Kaidou and still remain in fighting condition afterwards*, he acts as a substitute father figure for Momo, and he becomes the guardian of Wano

(* in fact he's one of only two characters who go fully 1v1 alone against Kaidou if I remember correctly; and you can't even say Kaidou went easy on him because he's his son, since Kaidou has thoroughly demonstrated his willingness to kill Yamato)

Anyway, Yamato is great, he's a delight, I'm so happy to have him. As for sexuality, well, honestly there isn't a lot of romance in One Piece so mostly sexuality only comes up as gags, and usually it's very hetero, altho there are some exceptions like of course some of the drag queen characters, and like how even all women seem to be into Boa Hancock and Nami has that moment where she blurts out how she would love to have a sexy secretary like Kalifa (honestly Nami feels very lesbian coded to me, but it hasn't been explicitly confirmed so I'll ignore my theories for now)

(Just know that I have a whole collection of lesbian Nami moments because there are a bunch of them, some of them very suggestive like the Kalifa thing but also the Wanda thing (literally wearing each others' clothes, istg) BUT it hasn't been confirmed, it's not explicit)

Luffy is explicitly uninterested in romance or sex, this was confirmed by Oda in SBS and becomes a whole plot point on Amazon Lily since it makes him immune to Hancock. Zoro is definitely uninterested in women, and probably also men, but that latter part hasn't been confirmed. Either way neither of them are straight

I don't think there's any queer romance in One Piece though, even between background characters. At least I can't think of anything. Again, there isn't a lot of straight romance either and when there is, it mostly serves the purpose of "well these characters need to have parents I guess"

I don't expect there to be queer romance in the future either, Oda is a straight man (I'm pretty sure) and he just doesn't seem all that interested in writing romance in the first place

But there definitely are queer characters in One Piece and personally I think they're great. I'm not gonna call them perfect representation but honestly I'd rather have representation that brings me joy

Emporio Ivankov and Bon Clay seem to be celebrated as excellent examples of queer representation in anime. However, at least to me, they both seem like horrible caricatures. Please tell me I'm wrong, and this is just One Piece's unusual art style playing tricks on me. Because One Piece has had so many Characters in the Canon Pride polls, and they all look like caricatures in some way. Now I know it's a Shonen anime that's been on for a long time, so the bar isn't necessarily high for good lgbtq representation, especially when compared to others in the same genre from the same time period. But does One Piece have good lgbtq+ representation and characters, not just queerbaiting like actual canon characters? I specifically named Emporio Ivankov and Bon Clay because they look the worst to me based on character design.

But for more info, Emporio Ivankov ate The Horu Horu no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the user the ability to create a variety of special hormones that can alter the recipient's body in any way the user desires, making the user a Hormone Controlling Human. So they can change their gender and anyone's gender at will. They are a founding member of the Revolutionary Army. Plus, they are also the Queen of an island of canon genderqueer people.

Plus, their design is based on the iconic Tim Curry character Dr. Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This is Bentham, aka Bon Clay. He ate The Mane Mane no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to turn themselves into a physical double of anyone they touch, making the user an Imitating Human. So basically, they're a shapeshifter with some limitations. He did start out as a villain, but now he's the queen of the Queer Paradise "Newkama Land" in Impel Down that the prisoners made to hide from the guards. It was initially created and ruled over by Emporio Ivankov until they escaped and returned to their home island.

Fox stops in front of the open door and scowls.

The door was locked, but that means very little. His office isn’t empty. Mereel, wearing his shell and leaning against the desk; Cody, sitting on his chair, the jacket of his dress greys hanging from the back and his hat in Mereel’s hands.

They turn to look at him at the same time, and Cody’s eyes flash. He smiles, tiny and smug, and folds his arms. He has his boots on the edge of the table, and he looks comfortable and knowing and Fox’s very glad he’s well and alive but right now he’d give quite a lot for him to be well and alive and on the other side of the galaxy.

Mereel looks like he always does: he winks at Fox, long fingers playing with the hat, and Fox didn’t know he was back on Triple Zero, and he thought he didn’t like Cody too much—something about Jedi and bootlickers and Sergeant Skirata; Fox stopped paying attention halfway through—but his presence isn’t as much of a shock as it should be.

He slips from the edge of the table, kama swishing around his hips, and Fox steps further into his tiny office and locks the door behind him again: whatever happens here, he doesn’t want any of his men to see it. The last thing Mereel needs is a kriffing public.

Cody’s grin grows, and he sits up on Fox’s chair, dropping his feet to the duracrete noiselessly.

“We’re meeting tonight,” Fox tells him. Cody, Fox, Cody’s captain, Ponds. Some other people whose names Fox can’t remember. What are you doing here?

Cody shrugs: wouldn’t you like to know. “We are,” he agrees easily. He stands up and starts rounding the desk; Mereel throws his hat at him, and Cody grabs it from the air without looking, eyes still on Fox. he stops in front of him and knocks Fox’s pauldron with his knuckles; Fox rolls his eyes and takes off his bucket.

Cody’s smile softens a bit, and when he reaches out for Fox, Fox goes. He rests his forehead against Cody’s for a beat, breathing in Cody’s familiar smell, soaking in his warmth.

“Well, that’s adorable,” Mereel comments. Cody blinks his eyes open and steps away. He glances at Mereel, eyes suddenly flat, and Mereel smirks. Blood in the water, and Mereel about to say something he shouldn’t and won’t regret.

Fox places his hand on his mouth; Mereel stiffens, scowling, and Fox pushes him away, one hand on his face and the other on his plackart. He turns to look at Cody, tilting his head at him, and Cody exhales. He places his hat back on his head and leaves without looking back.

Mereel huffs. Fox cuts his eyes at him and folds his arms.

“Rude,” he says, and Fox—Fox just laughs at him, hoarse and painful.

He crowds Mereel against the door; Mereel scowls down at him, pouting like he does every time something doesn’t go his way, and when Fox licks into his mouth, he sinks his teeth into Fox’s lower lip and pulls, just once and too hard.

Fox leans away.

“Play nice or fuck off,” he reminds Mereel, and Mereel—for a beat, Fox’s sure he’s going to leave, that Fox’s finally pushed him too hard, but then Mereel sighs and lowers his eyes and it’s mostly theatre but he also stays where he is, between Fox and the door, his fingers hooked around Fox’s belt.

Fox sighs, suddenly very tired. He leans forward, and when Mereel doesn’t move away he hides his face in the crook of Mereel’s neck, right under his jaw, breathing in clean sweat and aftershave and the chemical smell of Mereel’s blacks.

One bare hand wraps itself around the back of Fox’s neck, gripping tightly, before scratching at his hair.

“I always play nice,” Mereel lies grumpily. Fox snorts.
