why would the screenwriters get upset on twitter about something so inconsequential? it's a CW show, one that i feel like most of the cast and crew know is bad, given clips of some of the interviews i've seen over the years.

Because they're petty bitches and also because these people didn't realize until season 5 that this was bad. Like, the actors knew it was bad, cuz they had to try and sell all this bullshit, but Roberto genuinely did not believe he was making a bad product for like half of this show's run. Cuz this show has this reputation NOW as super campy and self-awarely parodic but if you watch the first two seasons, it's trying to be a Twin Peaks stylized but otherwise regularly drama show, and it was a whole thing in the media after season 3 that they were gonna try and tone the show down to get back to "season 1 vibes". Except it didn't work because Roberto is a bad writer, he is not talented, and people were still making fun of the show, and I think that's when he just kinda gave up and decided that we might as well be laughing with him rather than at him.

So when Sam Witwer pointed out that his stupid plot was stupid, he still hadn't figured it out yet, so he got really pissy, even though the solution to not wanting your actors to say your writing is bad is to stop being a bad writer.
