In cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute, in 2022 Mattel created a four-doll set they called the Eco Leadership Team.
The dolls were made of recycled plastic* (much like the Jane Goodall Inspiring Women doll) and represented a Renewable Energy Engineer, a Conservation Scientist, a Chief Sustainability Officer, and an Environmental Advocate.
Oh yes, Mattel has produced a Barbie who is canonically a protestor.
There is a lot to like about this dollset: Mattel is representing women in STEM fields, Mattel is making an effort to produce more sustainable Barbies, and Mattel is actively encouraging their target audience to take an active interest in creating positive change in their community.
On the other hand...
Remember that asterisk above?
That should read *Hair and face excluded. Those parts were not recycled. And although this set is a certified carbon neutral product, per the back of the box, most Barbies are not.
I am not questioning that I think it was right for Mattel to produce this product and I think it's great in many ways, but I think perhaps Mattel as a corporation could be doing a little more.

I can notice how fascinated Jane is with chimps, even with all the complications of getting into an unknown wild territory and being just a young woman with barely any knowledge about primatology, she still adventured herself in the midst of the african jungles. Jane Goodall is indeed a remarkable woman, along with Dian Fossey, Birute Galdikas and Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, they all brought unparalleled knowledge about primatology and related fields.

Bonus: here too is a photo of the display with Jane’s doctoral thesis. That’s a hand-typed copy with photos hand-pasted in…just some perspective for everyone currently working on their thesis/dissertation with the benefit of a computer. 😉

Young chimpanzees and human teens share risk-taking behaviors
“Adolescent chimpanzees are in some sense facing the same psychological tempest that human teens are,” said lead researcher Alexandra Rosati, PhD, an associate professor of psychology and anthropology at the University of Michigan. “Our findings show that several key features of human adolescent psychology are also seen in our closest primate relatives.” Young chimpanzees and human teens share…

Happy 90th Birthday Jane Goodall!! ❤️
“… and I looked upon the world with all the innocence and wonder of a newborn babe. And now, if I am sad, or filled with sudden rage, I find some quiet place with grass and leaves and earth, and sit there silently and hope that they will come and call me, with their silvery voices, and make me clean again, those little angels of the trees and flowers.”

You get to choose what sort of impact you make
You may recall that I recently commented on having watched the Sky Arts program Portrait Artist of the Year. The finale of one season was an episode about a commissioned portrait of the ethologist Dr. Jane Goodall. During that episode there was a brief segment from one of her public meetings promoting her charity, Shoots and Roots, the youth movement of the Jane Goodall Institute. During that…

NASA Partners with Jane Goodall Institute to Protect Chimpanzees
Jan 24, 2017
Data from Landsat satellites, a joint mission of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, have been critical to helping the Jane Goodall Institute in their work to protect chimpanzees and their habitat. In this video, Goodall and JGI scientist Lilian Pintea discuss the transformational role of seeing changing habitats from above.

Jane Goodall by Katherine Krizek
“The least I can do is speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. The greatest danger to our future is apathy”
At 26 years old Jane Goodall went to Africa for the first time with a pair of binoculars, a notebook, and her powers of observation. She has spent her life learning about the social and family life of chimpanzees discovering that they have unique personalities, emotions, are capable of rational thought, and use tools, just like us.
The research station she established in Gombe (now Tanzania) in 1960 became in 1977 “The Jane Goodall Institute” founded in order to continue research and conservation advocacy for chimps and other endangered species.

Fun fact, this happened with Gary Larson and Jane Goodall!
Larsen made a Far Side comic- this one, actually-
And the Jane Goodall Institute (then) executive director hired a lawyer to sent a Cease and Desist, or a litigation threat or something of the like. BEFORE actually talking to her (she was out of the country at the time). When they actually talked to her and showed her the comic, she laughed and found it amusing, specifically saying "Wow! Fantastic! Real fame at last! Fancy being in a Far Side cartoon!" and when she found out "she" was suing him, she called it off and sent a letter of apology (with some delay because of being a world-renowned scientist and having 100 different plates spinning, I'm sure)
They actually ended up becoming friends, she wrote the Forward for one of his comic compilation books (I believe it was Gallery 5, but I don't remember) and he went on a guided excursion with her. And the cartoon ended up getting used for a T Shirt to be sold for the JGI, and raised a bunch of funds for them lol
(Only a portion, but the forward in her own words is fun to read lol)
So Prismo got recast in the Fionna and Cake show cuz Kumail Nanjiani's agents didn't let him know the crew was trying to get him back to reprise the role
#gary larson#the far side#i love the far side so so so much its aged like fine wine and its so good#and this story makes me laugh#jane goodall#idk her or her work that well but just based off this interaction she seems cool#sorry for long post i just love that story lol
