as an older sibling who had a pretty bad inferiority complex towards his younger brother... i do kinda get it? it's very easy to develop a warped view of your younger sibling, especially if that sibling is or is perceived to be more talented than you at something.

granted, in iroh's case, he was the talented favorite, so that's something of a swap, but even so.

it's a little annoying that the older brother is always the "good" one tho

Azula started as “Prince Azul,” who seems to have had an equally bad relationship with his older brother Zuko. Of course there’s Iroh-Ozai. And later on Bryke would create Tonraq-Unalaq, which seems to be a copy paste of the worst parts of the Zuko-Azula and Iroh-Ozai dynamics with zero of the nuance preserved.

I have to wonder if this point if one of Bryke felt overshadowed by a younger brother who was smarter and more capable than they were.

#atla #honestly my biggest beef with the fandom's treatment of ozai isn't that he's always viewed as a complete monster from birth #who had no chance of ever being anything else #my biggest issue is that people act like iroh always saw him as a monster and hated him for it #like iroh canonically doesn't want to fight his brother #like at all #the iroh you see in fics would've challenged ozai to a fistfight at the drop of a hat #the iroh in canon is never even in the same shot as him #hell i can only think of one time we see them in the same room and it's during the agni kai #which btw #if ozai could take high general bujing's place in the agni kai then iroh could've taken zuko's #zuko didn't know his opponent had changed until ozai stepped up to fight him but bujing was standing with iroh #he had time to do something #he sent three teenagers to go take down a fleet and two other teenagers to go beat up his niece #meanwhile he and his cool old master pai sho buddies freed ba sing se for dramatic irony #despite the fact that it was completely unnecessary bc no one important was in ba sing se and zuko could just give it back as firelord #idk i just feel like both iroh and ozai are more complicated than people give them credit for
