Anytime someone says they dislike Shakespeare too many people come in with the most condescending attitude (“don’t fear the language, it’s actually not that hard 🥺” “it’s taught wrong 😔”), like maybe I’m really smart and I totally understand Shakespeare but his work doesn’t strike an emotional chord with me

#which is exactly what it is #I feel no emotional connection to Shakespearea work whatsoever #the stories and the time period just don’t interest me that much 😭#nobody screams when you say you don’t enjoy Hemingway #but G-d forbid I don’t fall over myself to say how profound Shakespeare is #It’s like so disrespectful to assume I don’t like Shakespeare because it’s ‘hard’#sometimes people have educated thoughts on classics #that don’t uphold the writing as Timeless Stories and enjoyable for everyone #this is my rant on Shakespeare lmao #but seriously #the idea that Shakespeare is a universally enjoyable writer regardless of text difficulty #is a wildly unsubstantiated idea #idk idk I know his relevance and the purpose of teaching him #I just think Shakespeare scholars act like nobody else has ever really TRIED to read Shakespeare before 😭#if you didn’t like a play they’ll just say you read it wrong or something
