is there a reason you use storygraph instead of goodreads?
yup! goodreads is owned by amazon and is really just a cheap cash grab for bezos! a fun fact abt bezos is he started amazon w books because it would be easy, not because he has a passion for stories! storygraph was started by a Black woman who is Also a reader, so its designed to meet the needs of ppl who love books! its partially volunteer run, and they have a small team of ppl who r updating the website/app as we speak! readers can add books, which helps increase the number of indie pub books on it (indie pub books r disproportionally minority identity authors btw)! you can also pay $50/year to do bata testing and support them! this way, theyre getting ideas and feedback FROM users! goodreads has barely been updated in over a decade. it also runs on the same algorithm as amazon, which means the recs ur getting have nothing to do with the books youve read and liked and everything to do with who is paying amazon to promote their book! storygraph has an algorithm that considers the genre/style/rep ur reading as well as how ur rating them to give u personalized, curated recs! storygraph also gives better stats- their pie charts are beautiful! you can buddy read which means if u and ur long distance friend r reading the same thing u can see each others progress! you can also change the edition of the book your reading so as an audiobook and ebook lover i can see how much time im spending listening to books in comparison to how much time i spend w my face in a book! theres a lot of reasons to switch, but the biggest for me is that reading is a way for me to expand my empathy and goodreads doesnt feel the most ethical to me while storygraph contributes to my love of books and libraries and small press publishers in a number of ways
