to my many yellowjackets followers who I know support morally dubious women committing cannibalism crimes, please watch The Horrors of Dolores Roach. it's basically modern day Sweeney Todd in Washington Heights with empandas instead of pies.

Damon has been cast in an upcoming Blumhouse/Amazon Prime Horror Action series and as a series regular!!! I'm fucking screaming! His character is “the owner of a successful country music club" named Lucky. 😭 I'm so excited for this! Full Article from BloodyDisgusting:
Four new cast members join Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Nettles on Blumhouse TV’s “The Bondsman,” an action horror series for Amazon’s Prime Video. That includes actor Damon Herriman (Run Rabbit Run, The Nightingale, “Mindhunter”). Variety reports that Herriman, Beth Grant (No Country For Old Men, Donnie Darko), Maxwell Jenkins (“Arcadian,” “Lost In Space”) and Jolene Purdy (“The White Lotus,” “Orange Is The New Black”) have all joined the show in series regular roles. The action horror series “centers on Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon), a backwoods bounty hunter who comes back from the dead with an unexpected second chance at life, love, and a nearly-forgotten musical career — only to find that his old job now has a demonic new twist.” “The Bondsman” was created by Grainger David (The Chair), who will also executive produce. Erik Oleson will serve as showrunner and executive producer via CrimeThink. Jennifer Nettles will play Hub Halloran’s ex-wife, Maryanne. Beth Grant will play Kitty, the mother of Hub Halloran. Herriman will appear as Lucky, who is described as “the owner of a successful country music club, who is in a relationship with Maryanne.” Jenkins will play Cade, Hub and Maryanne’s son. Jolene Purdy will play Midge, who is described as “weary with the understated gravitas of someone who’s learned the hard way how to hold her ground in a male-dominated world. Midge may look unassuming but she’s actually a secret emissary.” Amazon ordered eight half-hour episodes of “The Bondsman.” Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie for Blumhouse TV also executive produce, as does Paul Shapiro from CrimeThink. Bacon will also executive produce in addition to leading the series. “The Bondsman” also marks the latest collaboration between Blumhouse and Amazon. Blumhouse is also behind Prime Video’s horror dramedy “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” which debuted last summer on the streaming platform.

I think the funniest thing about the Horror of Dolores Roach is that you never actually see either of the main characters eating anything except in like the first episode. (Unless you count what Luis does to Dolores... which i have to give props for showing an m/f couple actually engaging in that specific act. One of the few times I've been fine with sex in a show is it does actually have a point for showing it lmao)
The second funniest is how smol Justina Machado is so you got this tiny woman killing people 3x her size.
Anyway it was a fun show and I recommend it if your stomach isn't squeamish. It is like if Santa Clarita Diet was slightly more demented and killing wasn't purely a survival thing. Oh and no zombies.

I rewatched all (meaning seasons 1-3) of One Day At A Time, because I finished The Horror Of Dolores Roach and needed more Justina Machado. Penelope and Victor's fight at the end of Hurricane Victor has such KCFH vibes in retrospect. Earlier in the episode (and in flashbacks in season 2) it shows how well they used to work by dialing up the corny sitcom antics. Like, the stalling for Alex's recital is corny even for ODAAT. Then when they get into a fight because Victor lied about being sober, Victor makes a corny little aside joke that would normally get a studio audience laugh. There's a serious moment in every episode but the little jokes still get a studio audience laugh. Even Schneider gets laughs when joking about his old failed attempts at sobriety. But while Schneider jokes in a more reflective way, Victor makes a joke to deflect, and both the studio audience and Penelope shut it down. There's no laughs in the entire scene, and the episode ends in silence.

Top 5 TV series to keep you entertained through this heatwave:
1. The After Party (Apple TV) A modern millennial whodunnit comedy set over the course of one night at a high school reunion and, you guessed it, the after party! The assemble cast is great. I don't typically love a Franco, but you're supposed to think he sucks, so it works. Ilana Glaser is adorable as always and I love this role for her. Ben Schwartz gets a musical episode and overall really shines as more than a John Ralphio 2D type character, even though I also adore when he does that as well! Tiffany Haddish has some incredible lines as the detective and without giving too much away, each character gets a backstory episode and I really love how they do this! Sam Richardson and Zoe Chao are popping up everywhere together (eh hem Senior Year on Netflix!) and I loved seeing their faces together again in this. They are super adorable in this will they, won't they dynamic. Go put it on and you'll definitely want to binge till the end to solve the mystery!
#theafterparty #ilanaglazer #benschwartz #tiffanyhaddish #samrichardson #zoechao
2. High Desert (Apple TV) Patricia Arquette plays Peggy, a Pioneertown actress turn private eye who after the death of her mother played by Bernadette Peters, is making her way in the world in gorgeous vintage westernwear and 70's sunglasses with a wonderful dead-pan sense of humor. I could pretty much watch Patricia Arquette do anything, and this series allows just that! You won't expect where it's going and to me this series is the perfect tone. The other casting is fantastic as well. Matt Dillon plays her ex and Christine Taylor plays her sister! It's wonderfully written, hilarious, and between the desert back drop and vintage prints I was so satisfied with how good and visually appealing this show is! Sad story that is didn't get renewed, but maybe we can start a petition to bring it back because I really want to see how this story evolves. If that doesn't work, I will happily rewatch this season since I found it to be really outstanding!
#highdesert #patriciaarquette #bernadettepeters #mattdillon #christinetaylor
3. Poker Face (Peacock) I know, I know, another mystery show and this time a role Jessica Fletcher would be jealous of? Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face is downright brilliant! She is so fun to watch as she interacts with tons of characters (including Judith Light) on her road trip or escape from which mountain? Not to give any spoilers, we'll just say she's driving a vintage car and each episode is kinda a different storyline. There is some continuity between the episodes but they all kinda stand on their own as well. I really liked this about it. It harkens back to the days of Murder She Wrote, Columbo, and maybe even 21 Jumpstreet! Her character, Charlie Cale's vintage looks are all so sweet and I really appreciated her wardrobe as it pertains to each new storyline. The acting is a real treat and you'll definitely want to pack snacks for this little roadside adventure.
#pokerface #natashalyonne #judithlight #murdershewrote
4. The Horror of Dolores Roach (Amazon Prime) This series has the tiniest bit of a slow start, but the promise of a Cyndi Lauper cameo plus an original song on the soundtrack made me stick with it and I'm so glad I did! This show is super original with has a wonderfully dark sense of humor. Dolores, played by Justina Machado is recently out of prison and uses her "magic hands" as a masseuse to land on her feet. The character Luis, comes us with creative ways to solve their problems and should be creepy from the start but comes across endearing as a real testament to the likability of the actor Alejandro Hernandez. I really loved seeing how this story evolved throughout the season.

5. Survival of the Thickest (Netflix) Michelle Buteau is a mood and her world is where I want to live all summer long! This show is a wonderful watch in every way! Michelle is so funny and the story is poignant while remaining silly and very rewatchable. I'm already starting it for the second time. My favorite episode is the last one, due to the beautiful story arc, so I'm just gonna have to watch them all again to get there! I'm so glad this series came out this summer. It is such a lovely tribute to friendship, working hard, having integrity, and above all fun! We need all the queer joy we can get right now! Thank you Michelle Buteau!

The Horror of Dolores Roach--Review/Thoughts
Tumblr media
Okay, so I remember someone on IG talking about this show and I was in search of something to watch. Scrolled upon this and binged the whole season in a day. Absolutely loved it! I've been recommending it to everyone! I would say that this is a dark comedy/ with elements of horror. Some gore and body horror, and the comedy is not campy but I found to be rather tasteful. If you like the movie Sweeny Todd, you will probably like this since the storyline is along similar premises. Man and woman fall in love, some murders are caused by their hands and they use those bodies in the meat pies that she cooks and serves to the public. This is exactly what came to my mind upon watching the first episode and a half. It does not follow that exactly, but still, similar premises. I love the Latina/Latino representation since I don't see enough movies or shows where they are main characters and not sidekick/side characters. The characters of Dolores and Luis were fit so perfectly by these actors---Justina Machado and Alejandro Hernandez---they did an amazing job! The whole cast did, but these two honestly really stood out, which is saying something imo, because most of the time I could care less about the main characters. Their relationship is something I could get behind, because I don't see enough couples of a younger man and older woman in movies/shows, and they had such good chemistry! Not giving spoilers, not really, but things between them ended on a rather tragic note, which I found to be a bit disappointing. But Dolores' want/need for self preservation was obviously stronger than the want/need for love. Also, I just got to say, that I absolutely love the character of Luis. I don't approve of marijuana use, but he doesn't come across as the stereotypical stoner that you normally see. I would say that he is a bit of man child---and there is one scene in particular that made me wonder if that was the event/experience that prevented him from truly growing up. But I applaud Alejandro on his acting in that particular scene, you were pulling on my heart strings sir, I just wanted to give him a big ol' hug so bad. And the crying...I like seeing men cry, not going to lie. It was a sad, but beautiful scene... Both of these main characters have their own issues, and I find that both of them have the problem of letting things go. Dolores refuses to let go of Dominic and Luis refuses to let go of his family's shop. Anyway, I am really hoping that they renew this for a second season! It is so deserved!

¡Que viva Dolores Roach! - Review of The Horror of Dolores Roach
Tumblr media
Let me tell you what I thought about The Horror of Dolores Roach. after an unjust 16-year prison sentence, Dolores Roach (played by the Fabulous Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she tries to assimilate back into society.  She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. She quickly becomes known as “Magic Hands” for her skills - only to find out that she also has "killer hands". THE GOOD From the start of the series, you are captured by the action of the characters, the wildness of uptown NYC streets, and the humor and horror of it all. As a native New Yorker, I can relate to many of the characters in the film just trying to survive in this bustling city. The darkness of The Horror of Dolores Roach was delightfully reminiscent of Sweeney Todd with the empanada shop selling a new specialty empanada that customers just can't resist! Can you say Meat pies con sabor? The actors were so endearing, especially the phenomenal Justina Machado, who I've loved since Six Feet Under back in the day. Some new faces such as Alejandro Hernandez (Luis) Kita Updike (Nellie) along with familiar faces like Judy Reyes, Jessica Pimentel and Marc Macon, and the great Cyndi Lauper were all part of this wonderful casting. This show absolutely had me clapping, laughing out loud, and screaming at the TV. It is so enjoyable and fun for horror fans and non-horror fans alike. Based on the play and scripted podcast by Aaron Mark, which I have not listened to... yet, I binged through all 8 episodes and hoping for a second season. THE BAD With only 8 episodes long, I really want to see this series continue is my only complaint. It was at times, a bit too fast-paced but for someone like me with borderline ADHD, that might actually be a good thing. You can't turn your attention to something else even if it is just getting a drink from the fridge otherwise you'll miss something major. The start of the series was a bit confusing to me as it builds off of a one-woman play called “Empanada Loca" in which the original Dolores meets the play actress Dolores and that storyline was not clear or needed. OVERALL Between Yellowjackets, Bones and All, and Dahmer, cannibalism viewing is all the rage right now. I found The Horror of Dolores Roach fast and fun. Two essentials to capture my attention. It's worth the watch! Where to watch:  Stream Now: http://bit.ly/WatchMorePrimeVideo Read the full article

The Horror of Dolores Roach
Tumblr media
I'm always trying to support latinos, because I have to support my people. Otherwise, I'd not have checked this show.
The show was fine. It was nothing spectacular or awful. Some episodes were repetitive. "Someone went to get a massage, and Dolores killed them for whatever reason"
I love the latino part. The spanglish, the songs, the ambiance. Justina Machado is amazing, as usual. The supporting actors are all incredible.
I didn't like the ending, tbh. I don't know if they are wishing for a second season, and that's why they went for an open ending. I'm usually fine with an open ending, but I didn't like this one.
Also, it's more like a dark comedy, no horror like it was advertised.
It's a quick watch, and It was definitely made to binge. I'll give it a 3 out of 5.

Reflector Podcast: Stories About The Strange Experiences Of Being Human
Tumblr media
The Reflector podcast describes itself as a "documentary-style podcast that tells stories about the strange experiences of being human. Our stories focus on how beliefs shape our world, on the context behind the messy debates in our society, and on how deeply listening to one another can reveal a sense of shared humanity. Our goal is to spark wonder, unveil complexity, and ignite curiosity."
Documentary style podcasts get carte blanche to go on a peripatetic journey through a cavalcade of subjects, issues, and societal problems.
When you look at the podcast's cover image, you quickly notice it's a visual metaphor for the show's thematic premise -- holding up a mirror to the human condition in all its complexity. The Reflector people want us to know: "We believe that there’s nothing more important to a culture than the stories that shape its values and sense of what’s possible. Reflector aims to report and tell stories that celebrate moral complexity and nuance."
"We merge meticulous reporting with compelling storytelling to illuminate the era's most urgent issues. By telling a gripping story with sincerity and even handedness, we hope to help people see beyond their biases and shore up the foundations of a pluralistic society."
The show's host -- and quite a good one -- is Andy Mills, who has a resume that can make even overachievers envious. Mills was a co-creator of The Daily at The New York Times and created, produced and edited several audio documentary series including Rabbit Hole, Caliphate and The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling.
Tumblr media
He was the director of new show development for the New York Times and a producer with NPR’s Radiolab.
Matthew Boll was a part of the original team at the podcast company Gimlet and part of the transition team after the company was acquired by Spotify. He helped create the series Crimetown, Conviction: American Panic, The Horror of Dolores Roach, and Duet. Recently he was a producer of The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling. He won a Peabody for his work on the music of Uncivil.
Isn't there anyone mediocre on this podcast? Anyway, the podcast is a Rockwell production, which, I discovered, is a creative studio run by Andy Mills and Matthew Boll, dedicated to excellence in storytelling and innovative journalism.
Mill and Boll pronounce: "We believe that there’s nothing more important to a culture than the stories that shape its values and sense of what’s possible."
The show has a subscription model with the usual benefits to subscribing -- "full access to the show, extra episodes and material, and you’ll also be in contact with us, our growing team, and others who care about this stuff as much as you do."
What issues does this documentary-style cover?
The first episode -- released April 30, 2024 -- was superb, as the show tackled an underreported and misunderstood issue -- the treatment of alcoholism.
The episode setup is this: "Alcohol consumption increased more during the COVID-19 pandemic than it had at any time in the past 50 years. Even though bars were closed for weeks on end and fewer people were out on the road doing their daily commuting, Americans were drinking so much that from 2020 through 2021 there were approximately 178,000 alcohol-related deaths - which is more deaths than from all drug overdoses combined, including opioids."
On the episode, "Katie" tells the story of her self-experimentation with the drug Naltrexone to combat her alcohol addiction and helps listeners grapple with why such medications are so rarely used to help problem drinkers in America.
It's an important question, since the traditional abstinence treatment via AA has an apparent success rate of less than 10 percent.
Mills and Boll know how to tell a story and spin a narrative that catches listeners in its web. It's one of those episodes where, if you have an open mind (so many today do not!), you will finish the episode with a new perspective on alcoholism treatment. The show spent several episodes on election fraud misinformation, and then the August 29th show welcomed journalist, author, and lawyer Emily Bazelon of Slate's Political Gabfest. Bazelon, endlessly fascinating, who discussed gerrymandering, voter ID laws, growing distrust in institutions, with a debate the power of elites and whether we should all be worried about Election Day 2024.
Two exemplary episodes are ostensibly about author J.K. Rowling. In part one, author and journalist Helen Lewis guides listeners through the latest developments in women-only sports, women-only spaces, and youth transition medicine. The show explores the ways in which the United States is becoming more of an outlier, and how J.K. Rowling’s career has continued to thrive amidst the backlash against her.
In part two, the show dives into thoughts and criticism — of J.K. Rowling, and of the series the co-hosts made about her from three members of the trans community, each with a unique perspective. This includes two of listeners’ favorite guests from the original series: Natalie and Noah.
Check out Reflector. What I like about the show is its complexity. Conservative podcasts like Bongino, Levin, and Shapiro thrive because enemies are "outed" in every episode. The enemies are: The Deep State (?), Democrats, Progressives, and elites (excluding the billionaire elites who donate to Trump). Leave your prefrontal cortex on hold.
On Reflector, nuance, ambiguity, a wide-angle perspective, and finding common ground dominate the rhetorical landscape. Put on thinking caps and be prepared to have your confirmation bias challenged ad nauseam.
