Happy birthday to the late, great Václav Havel.

It was my great pleasure to produce, design, and direct a production of Havel's play Temptation at The Brick in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, as part of Untitled Theater Company #61's Havel Festival in 2006.

President Havel and numerous Czech luminaries (including Madeline Albright) attended the show on November 17, the 17th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution (a BIG surprise for the cast), and our little 75-seat Off-Off-Broadway theater housed in an old garage threw a lovely party (with a live band playing Velvet Underground covers). I spent a nice time outside (pictured) having Pilsner Urquells with the playwright and being stunned (you can see Althaar company members Fred Backus and Alyssa Simon, who were in the show, behind Havel's head above) as Havel praised the production to the skies. At an earlier meeting, I had him sign the front page of my directing script for luck. I guess it worked.

Havel, before and after this event, has been a guide and inspiration to me as an artist, worker, citizen, and leader, and having had the chance to talk with him here and on other occasions, just chatting casually as two fellow working playwrights and craftsmen, remain as favorite memories.

How many other students like me were out there who never got the chance I did? How many didn’t have a teacher like Dr. Friedman? How many knew the answers on the test, but were hamstrung by something entirely ancillary to their academic ability—like their capacity to handwrite an essay in 45 minutes, or the unavailability of computers in their classroom, or problems at home that prevented them from showing up in school? The trajectory of my life was altered by things that were entirely outside my control. In my case, the course correction was for the better; in other circumstances, it might have been for the worse. This is something I think about a lot during this time of year, when Jews celebrate the holiday of Sukkot. During the seven-day festival, many observant Jews eat and even sleep in temporary outdoor huts built for the occasion. Stripped of our creature comforts and the buffers we place between ourselves and the world, we are exposed to the elements and the contingent nature of human existence. We are reminded of how much we don’t control, and how much of our security and success is in the hands of fate or God. The thin line between flourishing and failure is also a theme of the holiday’s scripture. In synagogue, Jews traditionally read the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, a ponderous and often pessimistic tract that opens with the famous words: “Futility of futilities, everything is futile.” But the original Hebrew holds a secret that is not readily apparent in translation. The Hebrew word for “futility” is havel or הבל. The word for “everything” is hakol or הכל. As you can see from the lettering, the difference between the two words is a single stroke of the scribe’s pen. That’s all it takes to turn “everything” into nothing, utility into futility. Observing this point, the Oxford scholar John Jarick wrote, “we might say that [Ecclesiastes] has crafted the most compact form of parallelism to be found in the Hebrew Bible.” It is as though the biblical author wanted to illustrate how the slightest shift in a life story can completely change its contents.

Karel Kryl (* 12. apríl 1944, Kroměříž – † 3. marec 1994, Mníchov, Nemecko) bol český pesničkár a básnik.Život Známy ako „básnik s gitarou“, bol jedným z najvýznamnejších predstaviteľov českého protestsongu v rokoch 1968 – 1993.[3] Piesne si písal sám, v jeho repertoári boli ako krátke úderné pamfletické piesne, tak aj dlhšie poetické a melancholické skladby. Otec i starý otec boli kníhtlačiarmi. V 50. rokoch bola ich rodinná tlačiareň zlikvidovaná komunistami. Karel Kryl chcel byť spočiatku hrnčiarom po pradedovi, neskôr sa ale celkom oddáva hudbe a poézii. Pieseň „Nevidomá dívka“ nahrala a vydala v roku 1968 kapela The Bluesmen s vynikajúcou Hankou Ulrychovou. V ostravskom štúdiu nahral v roku 1968 ďalšiu Krylovu pieseň „Král a klaun“ Arnošt Bracháček. Jeho piesne prespievali po roku 1989 mnohí umelci.

Jeho prvá platňa bola vydaná pol roka po invázii vojsk Varšavskej zmluvy do Česko-Slovenska, pričom titulná skladba „Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka“ vznikla úplne spontánne v noci 22. augusta 1968 ako okamžitá reakcia na vpád vojsk Varšavskej zmluvy do ČSSR. Karel Kryl odišiel z Česko-Slovenska 9. septembra 1969 na pesničkársky festival, ktorý sa konal na západonemeckom hrade Waldeck. Po dvoch týždňoch sa rozhodol podať žiadosť o politický azyl a v Nemecku tak zostal ďalších 20 rokov.

V roku 1975 sa po poldruharočnom manželstve rozviedol so svojou prvou ženou. Spolupracoval s redakciou rádia Slobodná Európa, najskôr externe, od roku 1983 ako jej stály zamestnanec. Po novembri 1989 sa na čas vrátil späť do vlasti. Vystupoval proti prechmatom politikov, Klausovej ekonomickej reforme a rozdeleniu Česko-Slovenska, ktoré sa ho hlboko dotklo. Karel Kryl zomrel 3. marca 1994 v mníchovskej nemocnici na infarkt myokardu.[1]

Karel Kryl je držiteľom striebornej pamätnej medaily Karlovej univerzity za prínos pre duchovný rozvoj a morálnu podporu národa in memoriam (1994). Bol ocenený Cenou Františka Kriegla (1995) a cenou českej Grammy (Sieň slávy – 1995) a 28. októbra 1995 mu  Václav Havel udelil in memoriam medailu Za zásluhy II. stupňa.
