[full thoughts] This book is about a couple that split, but they somehow find their way back to one another indirectly. The bar Half Moon is the main topic of this book, and infertility is kind of the secondary topic. Long chapters & a slow pace, but an interesting read overall

The Half Moon

Zubenelgenubi is my mom’s word. She got it from her Papa, and he got it from the sky. My mom told me that he used to spend a lot of time staring at constellations. He was in the Coast Guard, lucky enough to have served during a time of peace. He brought that word and that star home to my mom and gave her its light between cupped palms and crooked grins. She gave it to me driving down 144th Street past a high school that all five of her kids had gone to, copying the way that he’d grin out of the side of his mouth, his eyes peeking to see if his joke had landed. Zubenelgenubi is special because it’s the alpha star in the constellation I was born under and if the stars didn’t align for that, then it’s a waste of a cosmic joke, and my Papa was glancing out of the side of his eyes for nothing. Zubenelgenubi is special because it feels like an heirloom. It’s special because it’s fun to say and hard to spell. I can’t actually spell it without looking it up, which makes it even better because that means that I can only say in words the weight that the stars hold in Coast Guard hands and only tell the people who mean something about my mom’s Papa’s star.

I kind of struggled this month because I'm still trying to find balance between a full time job, running a business, & running a household. My reading took a hit this month, but I always have hope that I'll figure out a better system soon.
