Anime

Baccano! This anime is so bloody and there’s more than enough body horror to turn me off… THAT BEING SAID. I was fascinated by the non-linear storytelling that pieced this together a bit at a time. Also my new OTP is Miria and Isaac, the freaking clueless pair of hams that somehow manage to stay completely untouched by the absolute carnage of this story.

Madoka Magica. Probably my third re-watch. Caught a few neat details I hadn’t caught before. By far my favorite thing about this series is the detail about both Magical Girl powers (how they visually manifest) and Witch Labyrinths. The art style shift is a thing of beauty. Also the battle music is something else. I was a little put off by the constant dramatic hairtoss and zooms on those this time around, but it’s such a minor nitpick. A solid heartwrencher.

Casshern Sins. I am questioning my decision to watch through all the animes I used to like when I was younger because I just end up appalled at my utter lack of taste. Just… emo robots. Emo emo emo edgy darklord robots. Crying more at the screen doesn’t make you compelling. says the fanfiction hypocrite and OH MY WORD he has this utterly dazed and confused expression whenever he’s not groaning in anguish at the sky. STOP DELIVERING THE SAME LINES OVERDRAMATICALLY. WE KNOW YOU LOST YOUR MEMORY. WE KNOW IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT SOMEHOW. WE KNOW YOU LEAVE DEATH IN YOUR WAKE. STOP RECITING YOUR LINES LIKE A WIDE EYED TRAUMATIZED TODDLER OF DOOM. Stop saying our main character’s name thirty times an episode. IF YOU ALL STOPPED PAUSING HALFWAY THROUGH YOUR SENTENCES FOR DRAMATIC EFFECT, THE EPISODES WOULD BE HALF AS LONG. STOP HAMMERFISTING ME WITH MELANCHOLY MUSIC, YOU’RE NOT SUBTLE ENOUGH TO DO ANYTHING BUT ANNOY ME. Also, I understand our main ch aracter is one of the few people that hasn’t fallen to this strange disease called Ruin but can ya’ll stop harping on how beautiful his body is? Bunch of creepers. Yeah, no, I can’t finish re-watching this. I somehow rated this 9 the first time I watched it, and I’m dropping it down to 2.

Books

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. This has been a nice re-read. This is one of those found-it-at-the-library-and-it-was-good-enough-to-buy-my-own-copy finds. Two magical creatures of two entirely different natures and cultures trapped by circumstance in New York City. This is a tale of many different side characters and how they weave together into the lives of the main characters. It is well written, with good limitations and exasperations written in for inhuman creatures.

On Deck: Beyond Boundaries by Dr. John Townsend, Sleight of Hand by Peter S. Beagle, re-read of Healing from Hidden Abuse by Shannon Thomas, The Case for Creation by Lee Strobel.

Movies

Oliver and Company. It has been AGES and here are my two impressions after not seeing this movie since childhood: 1) Everything about the dogs is so extra. 2) 1/3 THE SOUNDTRACK IS PURE UNADULTERATED HEARTBREAK. HOW DID LITTLE ME SURVIVE???

Fanfiction

The Devil and the Dead by Providentially_Demonic (MSA). I finally got back to reading some more MSA fanfiction and whoooo what a oneshot to start with!! I’d seen Ecto’s Demon!Arthur AU around visually, but I didn’t know this was how it started. Fair warning, lots of gore, but plenty of well-done heartstring-yanking as well. Seeing Arthur struggle against possession is a major weak point of mine, and this was a good example of it. Continues into The Devil’s in the Details and Daren’t Go A-Hunting.

Puppet by Bookwormgal (MSA). Good concept, where the gang has already resolved things and they go out together on jobs, but one job goes wrong and Lewis gets to experience Arthur’s worst nightmare. There is a sequel, but I have concerns I’ll be delving into similar plot concepts in my next longfic and I don’t want to read the sequel until I’m more firmly established on where my own plot might be going.
