really really love it when characters look into the camera just once in an otherwise entirely diegetic story. yes. YES. tear down the boundary between the viewer and the viewed! create discomfort by reminding the audience of their role as spectator! instill the feeling that the character knows, on some level, that they are being watched—give them one moment where they get so close to scratching through the barrier and realizing that they are in a story, that whatever happens is not by their hand but by a writer’s, that the audience is implicit in their suffering. they are doomed, and they see you.
