Ni’meres.
They dived from the sky, faster than a charging horse. Those still on the lawn had no chance of escaping them. The ni’meres’ talons ripped into flesh and bone, tearing open backs and shoulders and piercing even the skulls of those fleeing.

The Fall of Ruin and Wrath [2023]
By Jennifer L Armentrout
“[Grady] blinked sleep-heavy eyes, ‘Whatcha doing, Lis?’ he murmured, his voice cracking halfway through.” [2]
This is the line that sold me on this story. The prose is unbelievably beautiful with a life of its own. Separate from the content of the story, I’d be willing to just read Armentrout’s prose straight up.
Stories like the 2 Sisters Detective Agency by Fox & Patterson and quite ugly one morning by Brookmyer have strong dialogue that’ll make you laugh, snort and turn the pages like crazy.
There’s something to be said for a book that makes you sit. And wait. The tension that comes from simply the first chapter made me feel like time had gone still.
I believe this is inpart due to the eloquent world building. It’s enough to give context on the Hyhborn and make them utterly terrifying.
By the time Lord Samriel stormed onto the scene, I was quite frankly more terrified than some horror movies. Plus the, as of Chapter 1, unnamed Lord who kills Mister— *shivers* — tbh that fellow scares me more than Lord Samriel.
I recently got this book from the neighborhood bird box. Can’t wait to see what happens! *undignified squealing ensues*

SHE LIVES BY HER INTUITION.
HE FEEDS ON HER PLEASURE.
WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT
Fall of Ruin and Wrath by #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout is a new fantasy romance for adult readers.
Long ago, the world was destroyed by gods. Only nine cities were spared. Separated by vast wilderness teeming with monsters and unimaginable dangers, each city is now ruled by a guardian—royalty who feed on mortal pleasure.
Born with an intuition that never fails, Calista knows her talents are of great value to the power-hungry of the world, so she lives hidden as a courtesan of the Baron of Archwood. In exchange for his protection, she grants him information.
When her intuition leads her to save a traveling prince in dire trouble, the voice inside her blazes with warning—and promise. Today he’ll bring her joy. One day he’ll be her doom.
When the Baron takes an interest in the traveling prince and the prince takes an interest in Calista, she becomes the prince’s temporary companion. But the city simmers with rebellion, and with knights and monsters at her city gates and a hungry prince in her bed, intuition may not be enough to keep her safe.
Calista must choose: follow her intuition to safety or follow her heart to her downfall.

Favorite Books I Read in 2023
Carrie Soto is Back (Taylor Jenkins Reid)
"We live in a world where exceptional women have to sit around waiting for mediocre men."
Happy Place (Emily Henry)
"Our love is a place we can always come back to and it will be waiting, the same as it ever was."
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Jenny Han)
"This moment between us, fragile and tenuous, snapped in half. It was over. It would do no good to wonder what he was going to say. Moments, when lost, can't be found again. They're just gone."
Unlucky Like Us (Krista and Becca Ritchie)
"My heart is a chasm of everything I know and love, and it will always be filled with you."
Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros)
"One does not live a century without being well aware of the space one takes up."
Fall of Ruin and Wrath (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
"It was still there, like a shadow in the back of my mind. That I should be out there. With him. Where I belonged."
A Fire in the Flesh (Jennifer L. Armentrout)
"But every day, there is a choice to keep going, to face the future head-on or not. Every day, there is a choice to be honest with yourself or to lie. One will be the hardest thing you've ever done, and the other the easiest, but there is always the opportunity for choice if you don't take the easiest path."
Iron Flame (Rebecca Yarros)
"Because love, at its root, is hope. Hope for tomorrow. Hope for what could be. Hope that the someone you've entrusted your everything to will cradle and protect it. And hope? That shit is harder to kill than a dream."

I finished this yesterday aaaand
still can't get Thorne out of my head. I love Casteel, I love daddy Nyktos, but Prince Thorne? He put them all in his pocket
Body like carved from marble?
Big and hard 🍆?
“You’re not going to be able to take all of me like this. Not yet.
But na'laa?
You’re going to want to.”
Fucks like rabbit even whole day?
And all the 'You should've known better than to run. I will always catch you'?
Uhm, give me a break 🥵🥵
Where are all the fanfiction about him anyway? 👀

You can't not tell me that Fall of Ruin and Wrath and Flesh and Fire/Blood and Ash aren't all in the same universe. When Sera was ascending and we as the readers were also getting the universe origin story it had a lot of similarities to the Fall of Ruin and Wrath origin story Calista was told. There are differences, and maybe that's because it was through word of mouth in Fall of Ruin and Wrath, but with what are basically gods living beneath the earth and Sera seeing "cities of steel" and seeing an apocalypse rain down because of those cities being disrespectful to the earth... it's just too similar.
(Everyone else is only freaking out about Poppy being Sotoria [trust me, I'm freaking out too], and I'm freaking out about that and these similarities. JLA releases books in a specific order, it would seem.)
