Goryokaku and Onuma Quasi National Park

I saddled up and rode my bike to the last of the main destinations on my map - the Goryokaku Fortress. I had seen it from above yesterday before the sun set but I still needed to actually look around inside. I must've been one of the first cyclists through the gates and I quickly found a nice sunny bench to sit at and eat my "breakfast" of water and these strange maple rusks. It was a nice view for this few minutes but overall there wasn't much to see, I'm sure in cherry blossom season, or autumn it would be much more impressive! I rode to a cafe nearby however once again I was left disappointed by a closed door. Surprise, surprise! With no other option, I rode back to the hostel to shower and start the drive back home. I thought I'd checked the directions yet somehow I missed the exit I needed and ended up stuck on the highway towards some place called Nanae that was not part of the plan! It was a bit of a loop to find my way back but I arrived at Onuma Park at 12pm - right on the original schedule despite the massive detour. The car was left in a perfect shady spot, which was ideal because it was scorching again today, and I headed over to the lake. Very conveniently there was a boat tour leaving at 12.20 so I hurried in to buy a ticket and get a good seat by the window but I needn't have rushed because there were only 6 people on the giant boat including myself and the captain. It wasn't really a tour but just a ride around the lake. I think the mountain in the distance is actually a volcano that erupted and created lots of small islands as an archipelago on the lake. It was great to ride around the little clumps of land with the cool breezes, we waved to an elderly couple standing on a bridge as we passed underneath. Then we rode back towards the dock and were dodging school kids in small paddling boats at every direction. When I was back on land I could see that it wasn't just one class of kids but actually perhaps an entire high school. We are talking around 200+ kids being a nuisance all over the lake. Throwing baseballs to each other across the walking paths, screaming, throwing rocks, paddling their boats and canoes, there were even a group of maybe 7 guys that rode rental tricycles around the lunch area (while they were still connected together). Is this how I know I'm getting old? Anyway, I found a bench on one of the little islands to sit and eat my lunch of pineapple and yoghurt. I had planned to spend a couple of hours here but it was so hot that I didnt even want to do anything, just being directly in the sun was so uncomfortable. After seeing the state of the toilets and deciding on a firm nope, it was time to drive on (via a "viewpoint" that turned out to be a construction site where a smiling parking man waved me out). I stopped at the last Lucky Pierrot restaurant on the way back to Niseko. The queue was just out the door when I arrived but got even longer while I was standing there waiting hungrily to place my order. After what felt like an eternity I grabbed my paper bag full of deliciousness and started driving to find a good place to stop in and eat it. I chose You Yu Mori park and parked up to listen to my podcast as I ate, however my fatal flaw was leaving the air conditioning going without the engine running. Blissfully unaware, I devoured my burger then walked around the park to stretch my legs before trying to start the ignition again only to hear sad clicking noises. Luckily the car owner called roadside assistance for me and just as I was just heading in to use the toilet a giant tow truck pulled in beside me. I thought I was about to get towed all the way back to Niseko given the size of the truck but instead he came over with his business card and a small jumpstart kit. It started up first pop and through some phone translating I was instructed not to turn off the engine for two hours. And that was that, I drove all the way back home, stopping only for a few groceries and praying the car started again... (it did!)

So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. Early morning when we were in Virginia, I pulled off the highway to go to a McDonalds to get some coffee. When I pulled off, it was a weird exit and I had no clue where I was going. I stopped at a red light, which had another light very close behind it which turned green, my idiot self was looking at that light for some reason while our light was still red...I hit the gas and then slammed on my breaks realizing what I was doing but it was too late and I hit a guy on the side of the door. It wasn't a big wreck. The guy didn't fly across the intersection. He didn't even move, his door was just dented and it will definitely need to be replaced but the man said he was not hurt at all. The truck we were driving in barely had damage, just a little dent in the hood that was very small to the eye and a bent license plate. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court. So since I was driving my fiance's car, which is under his parents insurance, I assume my insurance is not affected. The trooper just told us that the other guy's insurance will contact my fiance's insurance. So I am thinking all I have to do is just pay this awful fine. Well my fiance' called me this morning and said that Statefarm (the other guy's insurance) called him asking for my number.
