The whole thing with Murray’s comments and Nancy and Jon getting together…. It is set up in such a way that it can be read as a situation where an ambitious teenage girl was pressured into what she was “supposed” to be. Nancy was told by a man that she respected and who took her seriously (and was the ONLY one to do so, so Murray gained an untold amount of trust from Nancy immediately, and the show just brushing off their relationship is such a loss but ok), that in order to be her real self she must dump Steve. Now Murray was just poking at two teenagers with a metaphorical stick to see what would they do. Understandable position, as a younger sister haver love doing that also (not with romantic feelings though but Murray was never meant to be ethical). I doubt that what the comment meant for him can be easily translated into what it meant for Nancy (let alone Jon, who thinks that he is better than most people and that he is definitely better than Steve, so I imagine he was nodding along). But he did influence her into becoming an investigative journalist. Like Murray with him taking Nancy seriously influenced her into two major life altering decisions (career and significant other). Like wow. And they never interacted again! Fucking hate st continuity.

Like Nancy dumping Steve because Murray told her to do so is a major thing. It’s BAD for jancy. Before s4 I thought that they were not mentioning it because jancy happened and was the endgame. But with them toying with stancy and likely knowing that they might toy with stancy all along??? Why did they not leave it open to interpretation. It’s such a juicy storyline, it shows the magnitude of the influence that you can have on a teenage girl, it’s beautiful, it’s painful, it’s the stuff of a real love-triangle (which is hard to make interesting but that would make it interesting!!!). Why did they write it then??? Whyyyyyy?????

I am much more of a murray fan when he is being a weird gay conspiracy uncle guy and isn't matchmaking, it must be said.

He and Nancy have the potential for a really interesting dynamic! It really is a shame we don't get to see more of it tbh. and you are so right in what his comment meaning to him and what it meant to Nancy and Jon separately would be so different! I don't know if Nancy would necessarily feel pressured by it, (though I wouldn't say she wasn't, either) but maybe it would vindicate something of how she was feeling about her relationship with Steve at the time and her feelings for Jonathan? Like a "oh this man I respect and who takes me seriously also thinks Jonathan is better for me, thinks I should go for it. Maybe I will..." kind of thing?

And lol yeah so true Jon just had his own conception of himself and Steve and their relationships with Nancy confirmed by Murray. he just kinda got...permission? I guess? to make a move on Nancy even though he was the one bringing up Steve both times he's mentioned on the road trip.

Totally see where you're coming from of Murray's influence not being mentioned because you figured Jancy was endgame, makes sense (if boring) to not question it if it doesn't need to be addressed as an issue because the pairing is canon for the rest. But now the teen love triangle has been brought back.... you're so right it is bad for Jancy. It brings up stuff about them that a lot of people (especially the Duffers!) don't want to deal with or acknowledge. Though I don't think they were planning the whole time to bring stancy back I think that sort of happened because the duffers unfortunately don't know what to do with Nacy if she doesn't have a boy to look at and Steve when he isn't pining over Nancy.

There's not enough time left to fully and satisfyingly delve into the issues between the original older teens, especially since some of those issues aren't treated as issues. It would be interesting to see, and also so so juicy, the complicated relationship they have with each other because of the UD etc, but I don't think a whole lot of interesting canon material will come from it (though that doesn't mean fan content can't!!) just based on how other romantic relationships and their dynamics with each other have been treated through the show. tbh I think maybe s5 will tease the love triangle but ultimately either end up with them all single (my preference) or with Jancy still together.

The day that people stop taking the scripts (including ones that are 100% confirmed to be from st production, such as the massacre at hawkins lab script) as absolute gospel in terms of “they told it to us in the script so it Must Be Completely True” is the day i know peace. To be clear im not saying the script is “wrong,”/“the duffers dont know what theyre doing,” im instead saying that the script is written with the intention to give a specific impression of certain scenes (such as trying to pull the straightbait and make mike and el seem endgame or trying to make henry seem inherently evil as a child) because that’s what the show does. they set up a plot/idea that they want the audience to believe and then later subvert it/add details that make you question that idea once you look past the surface level.

The scripts are “gospel” in terms of “this is what a stranger things script looks like,” not in terms of “omg…. Theyve put the objective truth in the scripts for us to see!!!!!!”

The scripts are a valuable tool to have when it comes to analyzing the show, but the show itself is still the “text”/media that’s being analyzed. What’s written in the script is not the objective truth, but rather is often what they want the audience to believe.

Like some people grab the scripts and use them as if they’re some objective truth that can never be questioned even when there’s substantial evidence in the show that demonstrates a different reality than what’s being told to us in the scripts.

And again im not saying “question” the scripts in terms of “are they real scripts or not,” but in terms of “the same way that we question things like mike and el endgame/question anything in the show that’s presented to us.”

Ive said it a million times before and i’ll say it again: people walk into a tv show that has a heavy focus on “show over tell/using ‘tell’ in an effective way,” and then expect to be outright, boringly, told things. The fact that people value the scripts so heavily because the scripts are telling them things frustrates me deeply sometimes because those same people then turn around and ignore what’s being shown in the show, because they don’t want to look at what’s going on in the show, and instead, just want it spoonfed/told outright to them.

This is not about every single person who references the scripts, I reference them all the time- this is a reminder that the scripts are not a wholly unbiased, objective gospel. The scripts are still written with “what do we Want the audience to Believe is true?” in mind. The scripts are a great asset to have when analyzing the show, but relying on them as the end-all-be-all makes for weak analysis imo, especially when you begin to outright ignore elements of the show because “lol the script said this so none of that other stuff matters!”

Wow, this post is probably going to end up being a bad idea, because I am currently in the state of exhaustion that is telling me that this post is a good idea, lol

I'm p sure this will be pointless and unnecessary, though

The following post is an analysis, not of any ship or fandom specifically, but about me in relation to a certain ship in a certain fandom (Byler, ST). It's just a something to let my followers know a little bit more about me, and why I think the way I do, why I talk the way I do, in relation to the ship, and why I might try to avoid certain posts (theories, analyses, "proof" type things).

If you start to read this, please finish before interacting with me. I don't want anyone to take anything I write out of context.

Now, I don't know if this should be considered an anti-Byler post, because I'm not saying that I don't ship it...I guess it could be perceived that way, but it's not how I intend it to be. Bylers proceed with caution, as some of this may not be what you want to hear.

Also, I have been called out (for lack of better phrasing) for a possible trigger of calling a gay couple "just best friends" (Byler). The person who told me, said it was because they themselves had personally been in a situation exactly like that before. While I do not personally, fully know what that must be like (not having been in that situation myself, as I recall...), I CAN try to understand, and try to be more sensitive about that subject. So, I guess a trigger warning for...apparently internalized homophobia of calling a gay couple "just best friends" ???

I want to start by saying that I do not view Byler as canon (yet). That doesn't mean I don't think it can become canon, it doesn't mean that I don't ship it at all, because I do (to both of those).

Back when I initially didn't ship Byler at all, it was mostly because Mileven got in the way, lol, but the SECONDARY reason was that I saw a lot of myself and my friendships in them.

Yes, I was one of those people who thought that two same-sex people can be just friends (and I still am, but not specifically with Byler anymore).

I act the same way with my best friends, and I feel I would react the same way Mike did, if what happened to Will happened to one of my bffs. Basically, nothing about Byler specifically stood out to me as "gay". It just looked like a regular very-close friendship to me.

I was in drama and choir in high school. We changed in front of people, I had one friend who would grab my boobs on a daily basis, just because she could (it spawned from a running joke about how big my boobs are, in comparison to my tiny body). I've even seen some of my friends completely nude (and they have seen me). We've held hands. And while most, if not all of us, were somewhere on the rainbow spectrum (as I like to call it), all the things we did, we just did as friends and being friendly. Being queer wasn't exactly a big part of it.

Now, I'm not saying that all drama and choir kids will be the exact same as me. That's just how I ended up, and I think that's why I just see things differently (not saying I'm special by any means, everyone is different).

Anyway, Byler just didn't strike me as gay for each other. I AM of the opinion that Will is absolutely gay, lol, and I think Mike is definitely not straight (although I really don't see hard evidence for either, but I want it to be true). And I think there is absolutely potential for Byler, AND a likelihood for them to become canon.

I have read some Byler theories, and a lot of them make sense, and some pretty good points. Like how Mike keeps staring at Will's lips. On the one hand, I've done that to my friends, when I'm just staring off into space and happen to be looking at their lips, or their boobs, or whatever.

On the other hand, Mike was clearly not staring off into space, lol, he was focused.

But while the analyses and theories do make a lot of sense, that is just how I'm seeing them for now - theories, and analyses (which can neither be wrong nor right, usually). Until we get some hard, concrete proof, which, by my definition, is going to come either straight from the writer's/creator's mouths, or will show up in ST4, I do not consider anything I see from those theories as real proof or evidence.

I also know that it has been pointed out that the Duffers have put in certain details or, for ex., been very selective with certain music choices, or cinematography choices, etc. I totally see that. But you know, sometimes things in a book, movie, or show weren't meant to happen in the first place, and are just coincidences that we, the fans, take and just roll with (like the lip staring thing, for instance). I'm not necessarily saying that I believe everything the theories say are just coincidences (because I don't believe that at all, for some things), I'm just saying there are possibilities.

Another part of why I try to avoid analyses is honestly because I think they make so much sense, and the Mileven shipper in me wants Mileven to stay canon, but the analyses make so much sense that that shipper is afraid they might be right, lol. But that really doesn't have anything to do with this analysis.

I guess the point of this post is just to say that, I should be allowed to think that two same-sex people can be just friends, without being slandered and labeled as homophobic

(Because if you honestly think I am homophobic, I will link you to my Reddie fanfiction and all the other gay ships I ship which probably outnumber the straight ones, lol, I will refer you to my bisexual best friends and my bisexual father, I will even show you photos of myself marching in Pride parades. Plus, I will remind you that I am not at all straight myself.)

THIS IS COMING FROM A BYLER SHIPPER. Just because I do not view them as canon right now doesn't mean that I don't think they will ever become canon. If they do become canon, the Byler shipper in me will be very happy! If they don't, that shipper in me will wish they had. Viewpoints can change. I guess it just takes more to persuade me. I like Byler, I just like Mileven a little bit more. That literally doesn't mean anything. It's nothing more than a preference.

So like, I guess I'm sorry that my life/my upbringing/my relationships and friendships have made me see things differently ?? I'm sorry that I didn't pick up on the same subtext as all of you ???

I'm probably coming off as a rude-ass bitch, but you were bound to find that out about me eventually.

P.S. I know that some of the homophobia comments are directed at shippers who are, very possibly, homophobic. But those comments do not apply to all of us, and we shouldn't be grouped up together just because we have ONE similar opinion (which isn't even based on the same reasoning).

I guess, if you can't accept and respect my opinion that, canonically, Byler is CURRENTLY just best friends (even though I do want them to be more), until we get proof from the source, we might not get along. I am willing to discuss the possibility, and even look at some theories occasionally, on why they might end up canon/together. But until then, it's only speculation to me, and I would appreciate it if I were not attacked for this (although I'm sure they will be).

I do not go around looking for people/posts just so I can tell them they are wrong, I respect everyone's opinion. I hope that the same can be done for me.

Will Byers is Gay: The Evidence So Far

With the release of Stranger Things 3, there has been a lot of discussion kicked up about the character of Will Byers and his sexuality (or lack thereof). I've seen a lot of takes about what "it's not my fault you don't like girls" was intended to mean, many of which seem to take it in isolation, so I wanted to make a post putting it into what I think is its proper context; not an isolated incident, but the latest carriage in veritable train of queer themed language and imagery that has followed Will Byers since episode one of season one, and before that. You ready? Alright, let's go.

Season Zero: the Montauk Files

Before Stranger Things became Stranger Things, it was called Montauk. Like many would-be show makers, the Duffer Bros put together a "show bible" describing the premise, setting, tone, and characters of the show they intended to make. Like many shows, a lot of these ideas changed or were lost on their way to the screen, but it's always worth looking into their original concepts. Here is their description of Will Byers in the Montauk show bible:

Obviously, the major whammy there is in the first line "sexual identity issues." But there are some other interesting notes, like his "colorful clothes" that you might want to keep a lookout for on your next rewatch. Now, onto...

Season 1

The thing to pay attention to regarding Will in season 1 is in the language used to refer to him when he is not present (which he isn't for most of the season).

Episode 1: the subject of bullying comes up right away in the conversation between Joyce and Hopper. "The kids, they're mean. They laugh at him, laugh at his clothes, call him names." "What's wrong with his clothes?" "I don't know!" This harkens back to the Montauk show bible, but it's arguable, since it's never made clear what about his clothes draws ire.

She also mentions that he is "sensitive," "not like most," and that his dad said he was "queer" and called him a "fag." Hopper asks "is he?" to which she replies "He's missing is what he is!"

Episode 3: Troy says he's not missing, he's dead. "Probably killed by some other queer."

Episode 4: Troy, again "Will's in fairyland, flying around with all the other little fairies, all happy and gay."

Sensitive, queer, fag, fairy, and gay are all used to describe Will in season 1, but perhaps more notable is the fact that they aren't used to describe anyone else. If the show were truly period accurate, let's be real; the whole party would've been called queers on a pretty regular basis, because "queer" doubled as a generic insult back then. But in season 1, these words are only ever used in relation to Will, with one exception; in episode 6, Steve says to Will's brother, "I used to think you were queer." So it's not even an active accusation in that moment; it's used in the negative.

Hell, Troy walked up to Lucas mockingly proposing to Mike and proclaiming his love for him, and he still didn't call them queers. That language is reserved for Will.

Now granted, most of these are used as insults by characters who don't like Will, but still; as a writer, if you want your audience to remember something, repetition is an excellent way to embed it in their minds. There's a reason for the specificity of language surrounding Will, and a reason that language keeps coming up over and over and over again.

Season 2

Season 2 retires much of the homophobic language used to insult Will, replacing it with "Zombie Boy." The only homophobic language used in season 2 is the word "faggot," used by Billy's father to refer to Billy, who expresses a clear interest in women (and an arguable interest in one particular man, but that's the subject of another post).

Still, there is an arguable bit of queer theming in Will's conversation with Jonathan regarding the benefits of being a "freak" and how normal people never accomplish anything. Jonathan even invokes bisexual icon David Bowie to make Will feel better about his "freakishness."

The clearest piece of queer theming for Will in season 2 comes in episode 8, in this beautiful speech from Joyce to Possessed Will:

"When you turned eight, I gave you that huge box of crayons, do you remember that? It was 120 colors. And all your friends got you Star Wars toys, but all you wanted to do was draw with all your new colors. And you drew this big spaceship, but it wasn't from a movie. It was YOUR spaceship; a RAINBOW Ship, that's what you called it. And you, you must have used every color in the box. I took that with me to Melvald's, and I put it up. I told everyone who came in, 'My son drew this.' And you were so embarrassed, but I was so proud. I was so, so proud."

This is one of the most powerful memories of her son that Joyce has, an image so strong and distinct that she uses it to invoke his true identity against the monster that is slowly subsuming him. She notes very specifically that it's not something he copied, but something that came entirely from Will himself, an image that she felt represented him so perfectly that she took it with her to work and proudly touted it as his to everyone she knew. The Rainbow Ship is Joyce's picture of her son's very heart, and surely I don't need to explain to you how powerful a piece of queer imagery the rainbow is.

Some subtextual stuff; in episode 9, when the girl asks Will to dance, he stammers "I... I don't..." and only goes to dance with her when Mike literally pushes him towards her.

During the final montage, the scene cuts to different characters in time with appropriate lines from the song: "every move you make" cuts to Mike and El (as he is teaching her to dance), "every vow you break" cuts to Nancy dancing with Dustin (as she technically cheated on Steve with Jonathan), "I'll be watching you" cuts to Lucas dancing with Max (as she has playfully called him 'stalker' all season). What line cuts to Will? "Every smile you fake," specifically on the word fake, while Will dances with a girl wearing this expression:

That is not a real smile, that is not a comfortable boy, and that is not an accident; Noah Schnapp is one of the best actors in the entire show, and of the young boys, he is the one the Duffers trust most to do dramatic heavy lifting.

Do you want it to be a little more explicit? Okay, here is that scene in the script:

I mean, that pretty much speaks for itself. It's less explicit in the actual show, but it's still there, you know?

Season 3

And now, the biggest and most explicit thing to date; The Scene. I mean, you could discuss the obvious subtext in the simple fact that Will is the only male main character who has yet to find a girlfriend or express any interest in girls whatsoever, but that pales in comparison to The Scene.

The setup for The Scene is pretty simple; after declaring "a day free of girls" in order to get his friends to run the D&D campaign he's probably spent a significant amount of time creating, his friends have blown him off to continue bemoaning their girl troubles, so Will has decided to leave. Mike, realizing too late that he has genuinely upset his friend, chases after him to try and get him to come back.

A back-and-forth argument ensues, where Will accuses Mike of ruining the party and abandoning his friends in favor of girls, and Mike, in the heat of the moment, responds with "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" After which, everything stops. There is a full second of silence, and a close up on Noah Schnapp's face so you can take in his reaction.

There is a lot to unpack here. Now, acting is up to interpretation to a degree, but to me, that expression conveys two primary emotions; shock, and betrayal. That face says "how could you?" Because here's the thing; regardless of what Mike does or doesn't know about Will's sexuality, Mike knows for a fact that Will has been called a queer all his life by everyone from his school bullies to his own fucking dirtbag father. By invoking even the specter of that, Mike has crossed a fucking line, and he knows it. And we know he knows it, because he immediately backtracks and tries to mitigate the damage. But it's too late. The damage has been done.

I also think there is a tinge of fear in that image. Just a moment of soul raking panic that pretty much every closeted queer person knows intimately. It's very brief. But I think it's there, if you look.

This scene sends Will into an emotional tailspin that culminates in him tearing down the literal last bastion of his childhood in a fit of sorrow and rage. His innocence has been destroyed. He cannot regain what he has lost, and he can never go back to the way things were before. This is the emotional climax of his arc for season three. It's a powerful one-- shame it comes in the third of eight episodes, but that's neither here nor there.

And that's pretty much it for now. Any one of these things taken in isolation could be very easily dismissed, but here's the thing; they aren't isolated incidents. They are part of a clear and consistent pattern, one that goes all the way back to the show's inception, before even one minute of footage was filmed. And this pattern points to one very obvious conclusion; the Duffer Brothers have always intended, and continue to intend, for Will Byers to be gay.

Now, for the obvious question; why haven't they made it explicit yet?

The answer is as unfortunate as it is obvious; I don't know.

It's entirely possible that there is some external force that the Duffers have to answer to that is preventing them from actively pursuing this particular storyline. This happens all the time in Hollywood, and it could be anything from Netflix to Noah Schnapp's parents to Noah Schnapp himself just being uncomfortable with it. Many are the creators who dream Big Gay Dreams only to run into the horrors of our Forced Hetero Reality. If the Duffers ultimately submit to these pressures, I hope you won't be too hard on them. This shit is harder than you think to get to the screen sometimes.

But it's also possible that they just aren't ready for it yet. That they have been saving this for a future storyline, that they just want their characters (and the actors) to get a little older before they pursue this particular storyline explicitly, but they've been busily laying groundwork for it so that anyone paying attention will know it's coming.

I don't know. Only time will tell for sure.

For now, I can tell you this; I see a great deal of evidence that the Duffers still intend for Will to be gay, and precisely zero that they have changed their minds.

I hope that holds true.

The gardens where quiet almost dead quiet, I reached the little metal gate, pushing it open with a quiet creek I hopped out and shut it again I felt so happy taking my shoes off and running though the whispy grass till my feet reached the soft sand I giggled opening my little bag as I walked across the sand picking up cute and sweet little shells putting them in my bag I kneeled down close by the waters edge picking up a little thing it glintered in the moonlight it was a bit of glass but the days at sea and on the sand had sanded it down so it was duffered and no sharp at all I liked it so I put it in my bag I heard a strange sound like something diving in or out of the water I looked around nothing I saw a little bit away from me a mark in the sand it looked like the marks of where a fish had been dragged out of the water but it must have been huge lucky fisherman I guess when suddenly my eyes when dark.

“Ehh who's there?” I complain as I felt hands over my eyes no answer “show yourself!” I complain

“Guess who?” a voice asks behind me

“Hehhe Thomas let me go” I complain

“Alright” he laughs letting me see and I turned to see him he looked the same as last I saw him his hair all wet again “hello princess” He smiles

“hello Thomas” I laugh

“I brought you a present” He smiles grabbing a large swirly shell with little golden edges and handing it to me I looked at it, it was beautiful the most wonderful shell I had seen

“Where did you find this?” I ask

“Ohh just down the beach a little” he shrugs “I know what your like with shells” He laughs

“Umm thank you” I smile putting it in my bag “What's that?” I ask as I spotted something strange on his neck I couldn't tell in the dark and from here what it was

“Ohh nothing” He says covering it up with his hand

“Let me see” I giggle moving closer tugging his collar to see it neck better and he moved his hand and nothing was there

“see nothing” He laughs

“Ohh? Could have swarn I saw... Nevermind, just my head playing tricks on me” I smile holding his hand “Come on” I giggle tugging him down the beach to our normal spot a few flat rocks that are beside the sand but lead out to the sea it has a few little rock pools on it with starfish and hermit crabs and it was our little spot always has been ever since we where little we just can't be out to late or the tide comes in and your trapped over here I sat by one of the little pools washing my shells and stones in the watermy feet draped over the side into the water

“What is your obbession with shells Y/N?” he asks me his foot up on the rock his elbow on his knee and his head leant on his hand his whole odly seemed to be far away from any water

“I don't know” I shrug “I like them like little trinkets from another world” I laugh “Can't you just imagine little crabs going to little crab shops paying for things with little shells or little fishes collecting nice shells for there walls in there houses” I laugh

“You a funny little thing” He laughs

“Come on Thomas, I love the sea, it's a whole unexploreable world under there no man can journy down into and tell the tale” I smile “Who know's what could be out there? In the depts of the ocean? Glow in the dark fishes? A kraken? Maybe even merpeople” I suggest and he smiled a little at me

“merpeople? Like what pirates rave about? Some big breasted fish girl with beautiful blonde hair that kisses anyone?” He smirks “You wanna see something like that?” he asks

“Wouldnt you?” I ask

“No, the whole concept is stupid, merpeople and humans what a stupid idea, how is a guy meant to get it on with a mer girl she has no...you know, knowhere for him to stick his thing” He explained

“True I supose, but wouldnt it be cool a human like create able to swim like a fish one with the water and able to swim forever... I would give anything to be like that” I smile

“anything?” he asks and I nod

“but everyone has crazy dreams I supose” I sigh finishing up with my shells and moving next to him resting my head on his shoulder

“Humm yeah, your right” he laughs putting an arm around me resting it on my waist and giving the top of my head a kiss

“Umm, what would daddy say if he found us out here?” I giggle

“Likely throw me out into the sea” he laughs “and lock you in your room for the rest of your life” he smiles and I giggle cuddling into his slender chest keeping my hand on his shirt

“Thomas?” I ask him

“Umm?” he asks clearly half asleep with me cuddle up to him

“Come on I wanna nuzzle” I giggle

“I'm as close as I can be Y/N” he laughs I giggle rubbing my foot against his shoe and ankle “Ohh Come on its about time we get back” he says

“yeah your right” I sigh grabbing my bag and slipping my shoes on to walk back we wondered across the sand hand in hand he walked me as far as the grass

“Y/N? Could you came back tommorrow just as it gets dark?” He asks holding my hands

“Course I will” I smile nuzzling my head close to him

“Okay, see you tomorrow Princess” he smiles

“Tomorrow” I giggle going off towards the garden gate I turned back in hope to wave goodbye but he was gone so I snuck inside and rushed up to my room looking and sorting all my pretty new shells.

Review: PGA Tour 2K21 (Nintendo Switch)

If you’re looking to hit the virtual links, PGA Tour 2K21 mostly delivers. Despite some unfortunate bugs, this title still offers addictive fun.

While the Nintendo Switch is home to some great arcade and non-traditional golf games, PGA Tour 2K21 is the rare simulation on the hybrid console. I’ve been a series fan since PGA Tour 96 (on 3DO), even if my golf experiences on the last few Nintendo systems have been via Wii Sports or with Mario teeing off. Thankfully, this latest PGA entry takes me back while still moving forward.

True, it’s missing some of the features I remember, like practicing any hole and gimmes. The course fly-bys too, although those may be a relic of mid-’90s TV-style presentations. But it also has some of my favorite courses like TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The former has beautiful views overlooking the CT River and a famously tough final hole with a narrow fairway flanked by bunkers. The latter, a stadium course with great mountain views, has the desert looking better than ever. 

All told, you can choose from 15 available (and quite diverse) courses. The 11 Pros are slightly lower than I would have expected, but it’s the course count that will keep you busy. You can even tweak settings for the time of day and weather in local matches, though competing against pros is TOUR play only.

Want an even higher course count? You can design your own, which is both an overwhelming and exciting thought. I’ve only dabbled in this, so I can’t comment much beyond my intrigue. But I appreciate how the options are separated by layout, terrain, and theme to start. I may never fully dive into land sculpting, but it’s there should I ever choose to give the game extra legs. PGA 2K21 is for those who’ve always wanted to consult on course transformations.

I’m getting ahead of myself anyway because there are features that will attract your attention early. MYPLAYER might be a grammatically challenged mode, but its customization options are deep. Some may be for naught though, as a pair of shades hide my crow’s feet. Nonetheless, I appreciate the feature as I’ve taken digital Trev into the Career Mode.

Advancing past pros may seem intimidating to less seasoned players, but helpful tutorials teach how to start and improve play. I admit the user interface could be faster and friendlier – it’s a bit overly complicated trying to fine-tune with precision – but practice makes perfect. The opening tutorial will get you ready to start your career, as you aim to become the FedExCup Champion. As you grow as a golfer throughout the season, you’ll attract rivals and contract sponsors. 

In between, why not check out the online community? None of my friends own this game, so I was unable to set up a private match. Which is a shame, as playing with strangers essentially means going against existing leaderboard scores as I couldn’t find anyone online for head to head. It’s not a quick process, and I haven’t been able to find a way of learning the difficulty setting before joining. So I doubt I’ll be going online much. All the same, I’m creating a casual online society, Purely Trev’s Club, with no membership fee, so Pure Nintendo amateur golfers, look me up.

As you gain experience, you’ll appreciate how you can adjust the skill level. There’s a fair amount of choice in how you can do this. For instance, as someone used to the classic 3-click swing meter, some of these modern alterations – flicking the Joy-Con sticks – aren’t superior. But, even tweaking them to more forgiving settings, I’ve still ensured a good challenge by upping CPU difficulty, boosting wind, disabling Pro Vision settings, etc. These nuances help make learning each course oh so satisfying, while also raising XP for bragging rights. They also keep the continual temptation of the risk-reward element (trying to reach a Par 5 green in two, for instance) tempered by the desire for pinpoint accuracy.

Now it’s time to talk about the presentation, which is a mixed bag. The audio side is mostly well done, with ambient effects, occasional music, and commentary that grows on you. Only the voice of John McCarthy suffers, often being too soft to hear against the play-by-play and analyst commentators. He does fare better during local matches.

Visually, PGA Tour 2K21 can look quite lovely at times. But there are inconsistencies with lighting, and shadows move like time-lapse photography. Cutscenes have some stutter. Sometimes golfers will appear completely black like Shadow Link. Such variances remind me I’m playing on Switch, usually in handheld mode.

The biggest audio-visual blunder in my mind is the lack of crowds. You’ll see the clubhouse, gallery seats, cars, etc. But it’s all empty; there isn’t even any crowd audio to add insult to injury. I can grant a pass to the lack of visual crowds as a Switch sacrifice, but the lack of audio too? Unacceptable when I was spoiled by it 25 years ago. I must rightly call out such a choice as a triple bogey move.

Most other complaints are less significant. The number of legalese pages gives a poor first impression, but you won’t see them after the first day. While an actual game can be slow to start, once you’re ready to tee off, the game moves at a good pace. Seeing Ian Poulter more than Justin Thomas (the cover star) is odd, but more of a comical curiosity than anything. Not being able to record footage is a bummer, but you can save replays. Occasionally, replays freeze on a character’s face, so the shot isn’t viewable, but repeat viewings let you decide the angles. Spending up to $49.99 to buy in-game currency is eye-rolling, but easily ignored. Not having a physical version on day one is a mistake, but it’s arriving (better late than never) in September.

One complaint that’s not the least bit minor is the game closing “because an error occurred.” If it only happened once, I could chalk it up to the odd instance, but it’s not a solo situation by any means. So be warned, the bugs in PGA Tour 2K21 aren’t limited to aesthetics alone.

All the same, PGA Tour 2K21 presents many rewarding moments: having a rough start, only to rally on the backside for victory; learning I won a count-back to break my first-place tie; changing from Stoke to Match play so that a crummy couple holes that (under other conditions) would end my game let me remain competitive. And many more that space won’t allow me to mention.

As someone unlikely to play most of these courses in real-life, I relish the chance to visit them in video-game form. From driving off the tee, reading the green, and everything in between, this title offers a lot in spite of itself. If you’re someone who enjoys golf sims, please don’t let some careless glitches prevent you from checking out PGA Tour 2K21 on the Nintendo Switch. With practice, even a real-life duffer like myself can rack up his share of eagles

And soon there were only three left who didn't want to go, and those three were trying very hard to persuade others to stay with them. And very shortly after that there was only one left. And in they end he began to be afraid of being left behind all on his own and changed his mind. At the end of the half-hour they all came trooping back to Aslan's Table and stood at one end while Drinian and Rhince went and sat down with Caspian and made their report; and Caspian accepted all the man but that one who'd had changed his mind at the last moment. His name was Pittencream and he stayed on the Island of the Star all the time the others were away looking for the World's End, and he very much wished he had gone with them. He wasn't the sort of man who could enjoy talking to Ramandu and Ramandu's daughter (nor they to him), and it rained a good deal, and though there was a wonderful feast on the Table every night, he didn't very much enjoy it. He said it gave him the creeps sitting there alone (and in the rain as likely as not) with those four Lords asleep at the end of the Table. And when the others returned he felt so out of things that he deserted on the voyage home at the Lone Islands, and went and lived in Calormen, where he told wonderful stories about his adventures at the End of the World, until at last he came to believe them himself. So you may say, in a sense, that he lived happily ever after. But he could never bear mice. That night they all ate and drank together at the great table between the pillars where the feast was magically renewed: and next morning the Dawn Treader set sail once more just when the great birds had come and gone again. Review: PGA Tour 2K21 (Nintendo Switch)

If you’re looking to hit the virtual links, PGA Tour 2K21 mostly delivers. Despite some unfortunate bugs, this title still offers addictive fun.

While the Nintendo Switch is home to some great arcade and non-traditional golf games, PGA Tour 2K21 is the rare simulation on the hybrid console. I’ve been a series fan since PGA Tour 96 (on 3DO), even if my golf experiences on the last few Nintendo systems have been via Wii Sports or with Mario teeing off. Thankfully, this latest PGA entry takes me back while still moving forward.

True, it’s missing some of the features I remember, like practicing any hole and gimmes. The course fly-bys too, although those may be a relic of mid-’90s TV-style presentations. But it also has some of my favorite courses like TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The former has beautiful views overlooking the CT River and a famously tough final hole with a narrow fairway flanked by bunkers. The latter, a stadium course with great mountain views, has the desert looking better than ever. 

All told, you can choose from 15 available (and quite diverse) courses. The 11 Pros are slightly lower than I would have expected, but it’s the course count that will keep you busy. You can even tweak settings for the time of day and weather in local matches, though competing against pros is TOUR play only.

Want an even higher course count? You can design your own, which is both an overwhelming and exciting thought. I’ve only dabbled in this, so I can’t comment much beyond my intrigue. But I appreciate how the options are separated by layout, terrain, and theme to start. I may never fully dive into land sculpting, but it’s there should I ever choose to give the game extra legs. PGA 2K21 is for those who’ve always wanted to consult on course transformations.

I’m getting ahead of myself anyway because there are features that will attract your attention early. MYPLAYER might be a grammatically challenged mode, but its customization options are deep. Some may be for naught though, as a pair of shades hide my crow’s feet. Nonetheless, I appreciate the feature as I’ve taken digital Trev into the Career Mode.

Advancing past pros may seem intimidating to less seasoned players, but helpful tutorials teach how to start and improve play. I admit the user interface could be faster and friendlier – it’s a bit overly complicated trying to fine-tune with precision – but practice makes perfect. The opening tutorial will get you ready to start your career, as you aim to become the FedExCup Champion. As you grow as a golfer throughout the season, you’ll attract rivals and contract sponsors. 

In between, why not check out the online community? None of my friends own this game, so I was unable to set up a private match. Which is a shame, as playing with strangers essentially means going against existing leaderboard scores as I couldn’t find anyone online for head to head. It’s not a quick process, and I haven’t been able to find a way of learning the difficulty setting before joining. So I doubt I’ll be going online much. All the same, I’m creating a casual online society, Purely Trev’s Club, with no membership fee, so Pure Nintendo amateur golfers, look me up.

As you gain experience, you’ll appreciate how you can adjust the skill level. There’s a fair amount of choice in how you can do this. For instance, as someone used to the classic 3-click swing meter, some of these modern alterations – flicking the Joy-Con sticks – aren’t superior. But, even tweaking them to more forgiving settings, I’ve still ensured a good challenge by upping CPU difficulty, boosting wind, disabling Pro Vision settings, etc. These nuances help make learning each course oh so satisfying, while also raising XP for bragging rights. They also keep the continual temptation of the risk-reward element (trying to reach a Par 5 green in two, for instance) tempered by the desire for pinpoint accuracy.

Now it’s time to talk about the presentation, which is a mixed bag. The audio side is mostly well done, with ambient effects, occasional music, and commentary that grows on you. Only the voice of John McCarthy suffers, often being too soft to hear against the play-by-play and analyst commentators. He does fare better during local matches.

Visually, PGA Tour 2K21 can look quite lovely at times. But there are inconsistencies with lighting, and shadows move like time-lapse photography. Cutscenes have some stutter. Sometimes golfers will appear completely black like Shadow Link. Such variances remind me I’m playing on Switch, usually in handheld mode.

The biggest audio-visual blunder in my mind is the lack of crowds. You’ll see the clubhouse, gallery seats, cars, etc. But it’s all empty; there isn’t even any crowd audio to add insult to injury. I can grant a pass to the lack of visual crowds as a Switch sacrifice, but the lack of audio too? Unacceptable when I was spoiled by it 25 years ago. I must rightly call out such a choice as a triple bogey move.

Most other complaints are less significant. The number of legalese pages gives a poor first impression, but you won’t see them after the first day. While an actual game can be slow to start, once you’re ready to tee off, the game moves at a good pace. Seeing Ian Poulter more than Justin Thomas (the cover star) is odd, but more of a comical curiosity than anything. Not being able to record footage is a bummer, but you can save replays. Occasionally, replays freeze on a character’s face, so the shot isn’t viewable, but repeat viewings let you decide the angles. Spending up to $49.99 to buy in-game currency is eye-rolling, but easily ignored. Not having a physical version on day one is a mistake, but it’s arriving (better late than never) in September.

One complaint that’s not the least bit minor is the game closing “because an error occurred.” If it only happened once, I could chalk it up to the odd instance, but it’s not a solo situation by any means. So be warned, the bugs in PGA Tour 2K21 aren’t limited to aesthetics alone.

All the same, PGA Tour 2K21 presents many rewarding moments: having a rough start, only to rally on the backside for victory; learning I won a count-back to break my first-place tie; changing from Stoke to Match play so that a crummy couple holes that (under other conditions) would end my game let me remain competitive. And many more that space won’t allow me to mention.

As someone unlikely to play most of these courses in real-life, I relish the chance to visit them in video-game form. From driving off the tee, reading the green, and everything in between, this title offers a lot in spite of itself. If you’re someone who enjoys golf sims, please don’t let some careless glitches prevent you from checking out PGA Tour 2K21 on the Nintendo Switch. Spending up to $49.99 to buy in-game currency is eye-rolling, but easily ignored. Not having a physical version on day one is a mistake, but it’s arriving (better late than never) in September.

But it also has some of my favorite courses like TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The former has beautiful views overlooking the CT River and a famously tough final hole with a narrow fairway flanked by bunkers. The latter, a stadium course with great mountain views, has the desert looking better than ever. 

All told, you can choose from 15 available (and quite diverse) courses. The 11 Pros are slightly lower than I would have expected, but it’s the course count that will keep you busy.
