Books to read for quarantined teens (and anyone else, I just really wanted to rhyme)
Times are scary at the moment, but luckily if you’re a bookworm, you’ve been practising escapism for a while now. Here are some of my recommendations for escaping reality and keeping your mind happy.
Red Queen series - Victoria Aveyard
I will recommend this series no matter what the list is, I just love it that much. I love these characters so god damned much.
17 year old Mare Barrow is a Red - a commoner governed by the silvers. Reds have red blood and live normal but poverty driven lives, Silvers have silver blood, are wealthy and have god like superpowers. Then Mare meets Cal, a silver prince who changes her life forever. He gets her a job working in the silver palace, surrounded by those she hates the most. It is here that she discovers despite her red blood, she has a deadly superpower of her own. A story of betrayal, love and danger, and one I HIGHLY recommend.
Tumblr media
The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern
This book is a good one to go into blind, as I did. It is written so beautifully, the descriptions are so realistic and there is a scene with food that made me SO HUNGRY.
It’s the 19th century and a mysterious travelling circus has become an international treasure.  Le Cirque des Rêves is only open at night. At the centre of this story, two young magicians are tangled in a deadly competition. As Celia and Marco compete, they’re forced to step out of the box with their imagination and test their love.
Tumblr media
Eliza and her Monsters -  Francesca Zappia
As a creative human who battles mental illnesses like anxiety, this book means a lot to me. I really related to this book, the portrayal of anxiety and depression was bloody good. Oh, and the illustrations are beautiful. It also realistically portrays how you can be different online vs in real life.
Eliza Mirk lives 2 separate identities. In real life Eliza is shy and awkward. But online she is Ladyconstellation, a popular and successful comic creator of Monstrous Sea.
Then a new boy joins the school, Wallace Warland, Monstrous Sea’s biggest fan fiction writer. They become friends, Wallace assumes Eliza is another Monstrous sea fan.  Eliza begins to struggle as her anxiety takes control of her life, her secrets on the edge of being revealed. How will she deal with keeping her two identities separate?
Tumblr media
The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air series) - Holly Black
Jude wants nothing more than to fit in with the fey she lives amongst. But being one of the only humans to live amongst the fey, fitting in is difficult.Ten years ago, when Jude was seven, her parents were murdered. She and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the high court of faeries. A lot of fey despise humans, especially youngest, cruellest prince of the high king, Cardan.
My favourite trope enemies to lovers is portrayed in this book, a yes from me. I love this series so so much. It can take a bit to properly get into this book as it is rather high fantasy, but trust me it’s worth it.

The Drowning of Arthur Braxton - Caroline Smailes
Possibly one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read, its very very strange and yet really cool, if not quite fucked up? I recommend reading if you’re in your late teens onward.
In this urban fairy tale,  Arthur Braxton runs away from school and hides out in an abandoned Edwardian bath house. He discovers a naked woman swimming in the pool, his life isn’t quite the same after that.
As I said, it’s really weird, but I’m weird so if you’re weird maybe you’ll like it to. I took English Literature as an A level, therefore I love decoding literature and looking for for deeper meanings - this book was perfect for that. It switches between prose and script too so that’s quite cool.
Tumblr media
To Kill a Kingdom - Alexandra Christo
I loved loved loved this book. It’s a bit slow but I love it. And it’s a short read too! A little mermaid retelling with a dark twist!
Lira is a siren and a princess. The feared “Princes Baine” is cursed into humanity - she can only return to her siren life when she has captured the Prince’s  (a dangerous Pirate and famous siren killer) heart (literally) and given it to her mother - the emotionless sea queen.
When Prince Elian, famous siren killer, pirate and prince rescues a naked woman from the ocean, she swears to help him end the siren-kind for good. But can Elian trust this stranger?
If you like slow burn romances, this is the book for you. Also, again, enemies to lovers trope is MY FAVOURITE.
Tumblr media
That’s all I’m going to talk about for now because I’m really struggling with spelling and I’m not too sure why :’)

The Drowning Of Arthur Braxton ~ Caroline Smailes
Tumblr media
The Drowning of Arthur Braxton by Caroline Smailes is on my required reading list for this year. I read this book for the first time four years ago when I was in my first year of A-Levels. This book honestly took my breath away the first time around and I went into my second read wondering whether it would have the same effect. I was not disappointed, to say the least. Smailes has written this book so beautifully that you feel transported into the action. Her descriptions and her character development are so detailed that you feel like you've been to the places she is describing and that you've met all of the characters in real life. This woman has a pure gift meaning that this book still is on my top 10 of all time.
This book follows a young lad called Arthur Braxton. Arthur is having trouble at home after his mum left and trouble at school also. He's being bullied. Everyone thinks his Dad is gay hence why his mum left. Now there's an embarrassing photo being spread around school and Arthur has had enough. He starts skipping school and running away to an abandoned building. The building used to be an old Edwardian bathhouse now closed being left to rot. In this derelict building known as The Oracle, he stumbles upon a naked girl swimming in one of the pools. After this moment his life is never the same. The Drowning of Arthur Braxton is such an accurate account of the troubles that adolescences go through and how your first love can have such a grave effect on your life. It is such a dark and agonising modern-day fairy tale layered with elements of magical realism.
Despite the title of this novel. This is not just Arthur's story. Throughout the book, we get glimpses of the other characters lives aswell. From Laurel, Delphina, Silver, Maddie, Kester, Pollock and even the school bully Tommy. We get a glorious insight into all their lives which helps weave the past and present together finally drawing a much larger picture as everything comes to fit at the end. I loved the way that Smailes used different writing styles with some of the characters. Mostly their points of view were written in standard prose, however, some were written in verse, news headlines and my favourite in a script layout. Delphina's chapters really brought the action to life because you were able to follow the stage directions also, which helped me visualise everything so much more vividly in my mind.
I love the parallel Smailes creates from the gritty realism to the retelling of classic Greek myths. Her portrayal of teenage life is spellbinding and really resonated with me. I felt I connected with each individual story in one way or another. Even with the characters, I didn't quite like. Everything was justified, you could see the heartache some had gone through which explained the decisions they had made. I think Arthur's character is such a brutal depiction of teenagehood that anyone reading could relate to it somewhat.
This book definitely blew me away not just the first but the second time around as well. I would honestly recommend this read to anyone. Also, I am more than excited to see the movie adaptation that has been in the pipelines for years now being directed by Youtuber Luke Cutforth. I just hope they do the book justice.
This book 100% deserves a  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating!

A book review
Lemme just try this okay because it is a good book.
The Finding Of Martha Lost - Caroline Smailes
4.5/5
This book was so good! Once I started reading it I had to read until the end. I am a lover of Caroline Smailes books as it is and instantly fell inlove with Drowning of Arthur Braxton when I read that too. The book does highlight the need to talk about how abuse can affect people and the different types of abuse people face. You will instantly fall inlove with Martha and want to read again and again once you have finished the book.

A Rather Late June TBR
You’d think after just finishing my degree during a global pandemic I’d have plenty of time to sit and read, but I’m finding myself just as busy as I was before! We love job applications and trying to move out of uni housing!
This month I’m so excited to read:
Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given (as a part of the Maisie Peters Book Club)
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
(My very battered copy of) The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman
The Drowning of Arthur Braxton by Caroline Smailes

The Drowning of Arthur Braxton ~ Caroline Smailes
Tumblr media
The Drowning of Arthur Braxton centres around a Victorian bathhouse and the stories of multiple people who have been affected by the mystical waters that fill the pools. We meet Laurel, a teenager who starts working as a receptionist, meeting all those desperate enough to visit the magical waters. Years later, after the bathhouse has closed down, Arthur Braxton runs away from school and spends his days at the derelict building, meeting a mysterious girl, Delphina, who never seems to leave the water.
