Worldbuilding fact swap! In Croynia, Symphony's country, weddings are a Really Big Deal, especially in small villages. It's a cold place without many resources, so communities are very close-knit, and share everything they have. Everyone in the area is invited when there's a wedding. There's traditional dances and music and ridiculous amounts of food. A speaker for the Dawn Goddess will give the new spouses intricate tattoos around their dominant-side wrists to symbolize their bond.
YES YES YES! I saw that this was about Symphony and legit just cheered lol this world is so intriguing to me, and I’m so happy to hear any other tidbit I can about it. This simply reinforces that cozy sensation I get when I read about this particular story. Maybe it’s that I feel like I am either glimpsing a piece of or even becoming a part of this community you’ve created that draws me so much to this particular story.
I’m sorry, did you just say, wedding tattoos!? Oh my freaking gosh, can we make that a thing in real life? Because I absolutely want a matching tattoo with my wife that symbolizes our relationship in accordance with a deity’s wishes. I love this, not only because the aesthetic speaks to me, but because it’s unexpected. I wouldn’t have assumed a country that values small, close-knit communities to distribute tattoos at wedding ceremonies, but I like it! Are these just normal tattoos, placed on with ink, or are they magical, more of a henna-esque consistency, etc.?
Yesterday, I had mentioned a bit of worldbuilding that I actually wanted to expand on since it’s featured heavily in Oeden’s first chapters of Book One! Since that post would’ve been too long with all of this information, too, I decided to include it here instead. If you missed it, I answered an ask and discussed the importance of confession in the Aeonian church! Well, there’s more to it than that...
One day a year, the national Aeonian church holds a special service in the cathedral of their capital city, Almsgard. Those who attend this annual meeting receive the opportunity to have their sins absolved by the True Theophany, head of the priesthood and supposed vessel of the Sealed God Himself. Since the people believe him to be the embodiment of the divine, this once-a-year service is held in high regard by even the most sinful of people, as only god has the true power to make one pure again. While ordinary confessions end in anointing one’s forehead with oil, the True Theophany individually baptizes each congregant in a pool of holy water. When submerged, it is believed that the sin has nowhere to escape from the sacred water and is instead cleansed once and for all. Thus, the person lowered into the water might be the dirtiest human in Edenfell, but once they arise, they are as pure as a saint.
However, there is a certain complication that comes with this ceremony. Those who attend regular services at the Almsgard Cathedral are aware of a caveat that most others remain oblivious to. You remember that all confessed sins must be recorded and placed in a vault, yes? Well, while most are transported to their town’s local vaults, Almsgard Cathedral has a different protocol. Instead of a small safe room, the underground portion of the church contains a massive vault chamber large enough to house the sins of every royal and peasant to ever step foot in Almsgard. Beyond its intimidating size, it possesses one other special feature. Other vaults can only be opened by their respected priest, as they would already know the information therein. Not so with Almsgard’s vault. This vault can only be opened by the True Theophany and the Kaiser (or Kaiserin) together. This means that, in theory, the current ruler of Aeonor could have access to the secrets of every resident in the history of their nation. People don’t realize the gamble they partake in when wishing to be made pure.
You will have the opportunity to read about such this annual ceremony, and perhaps even witness Almsgard’s vault, in Oeden’s first chapters of Kingdom Come!
While Author Thursday has technically concluded, if anyone else would still like to participate in this week’s Worldbuilding Fact Swap, you can feel free to send a piece of information about your world to my ask box!
