Meaning : I bow down to the Sun God who is the cause of the day break, who dispels all darkness, who destroys all sins , who is matchless in brilliance, who is the son of Kashyapa and who is as red as a Japa Kusuma flower.

According to Hindu Mythology, Sun is a Kshatriya and born to Sage Kashyap and Aditi who is the mother of Gods. Her sons were defeated by the demons. Aditi prayed to the sun to be born as her son to fight and defeat the demons so that the Gods could get back their due. Sun agreed to it and was born as Aditya. Hindus believe that Sun is ever moving in a chariot drawn by seven horses. Surya, the Sun, is short in stature and has a prominent, shining appearance, with two arms, a curly mane of hair and shining, golden-brown eyes that are the exact color of honey. His mind is incisive and His complexion coppery or golden and He wears clothes of dark saffron. In both His hands, Surya has two red lotuses. The wheel of Surya's chariot represents the year and its twelve spokes are the twelve months.

God Surya (सूर्य) can be called the only god in Hindu religion who can be seen and prayed to in daily life. The Surya is depicted as having a body as shiny and radiant as pure gold. He is believed to be a golden red man with three eyes and four arms, riding a chariot driven by seven white horses. The Chariot harnessed by seven horses represent the seven colours of the rainbow or the seven chakras.

Surya is the life giver, sustaining all life on earth by providing all radiance and energy. He by mounting the wheel of time is also the one who is responsible for the beautiful seasons and causing the cycle of day and night.

The Surya is referred to in Sanskrit as "Mitra" or "Friend" down to the invariable warmth. Surya is depicted with two hands holding a lotus in both; sometimes he has four hands holding a lotus, chakra, a conch and a mace.

Surya in ancient literature

In Vedas, numerous hymns are dedicated to Surya, the Sun personified, and Savitr, "the impeller", a solar deity either identified with or associated with Surya. Even the Gayatri mantra, which is regarded as one of the most sacred of the Hindu hymns is dedicated to the Sun. The Adityas are a group of solar deities, from the Brahmana period numbering twelve. The ritual of sandhyavandanam, performed by some Hindus, is an elaborate set of hand gestures and body movements, designed to greet and revere the Sun.

The mantra in Rig Veda praise to the Surya as :

आ कृष्णेन् रजसा वर्तमानो निवेशयन्न अमृतं मर्त्यं च । हिरण्ययेन सविता रथेना देवो याति भुवनानि पश्यन ॥ (1/35)

(Throughout the dusky firmament advancing, laying to rest the immortal and the mortal, Borne in his golden chariot he cometh, Savitar, God who looks on every creature]

Vedic Mythology with stories

The Mahabharata describes one of its warrior heroes Karna as being the son of the righteous queen Kunti and the Sun. The Ramayana describes Lord Ram (श्री राम) as being descended from the Surya Vansh or the clan of kings as bright as the Sun. The Sun God is said to married to the beautiful goddess Ranaadeh, also known as Sanjnya. She is depicted in dual form, being both sunlight and shadow, personified. The charioteer of Surya is Arun, who is also personified as the redness that accompanies the sunlight in dawn and dusk.

Sun God in different cultures

The Solar deities associated with different aspects of the cultural universe of the society, but for the most part its raw image remains identical. In the 3rd millennium BC, the winged sun was an ancient symbol of Horus. The Neolithic concept of a solar barge, the sun as traversing the sky in a boat, is found in the later myths of ancient Egypt, with Ra and Horus. Egyptian myths imply that the sun is within the lioness,

Proto-Indo-European religion has a solar chariot, the sun as traversing the sky in a chariot. During the Roman Empire, a festival of the birth of the Unconquered Sun was celebrated when the duration of daylight first begins to increase after the winter solstice, — the "rebirth" of the sun.

In Germanic mythology this is Sol, in Vedic Surya, and in Greek Helios (occasionally referred to as Titan) or Apollo. Mesopotamian Shamash plays an important role during the Bronze Age, and "my Sun" is eventually used as an address to royalty. South American cultures have emphatic Sun worship. Svarog is the Slavic god sun and spirit of fire. In Aztec mythology, Tonatiuh was the sun god. The Aztec people considered him the leader of Tollan, heaven.

Surya in vedic Astrology

God Surya is the King of all the planets and is responsible for controlling all their movements. The Sun in Vedic astrology is called RAVI, or SURYA. In western tropical astrology, the Sun rules the Sign of Leo. He is exalted in the sign of Aries, and he is in his fall in the sign of Libra. In vedic astrology the Sun is known as the ATMAKARAKA, means .an "indicator of the soul." The Sun is the indicator of the father, our ego, honors, status, fame, the heart, the eyes, general vitality, respect and power.

He is particularly beneficial for the fire sign Ascendants of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. His nature, or temperament is PITTA, or fiery, and the gemstone associated with the Sun is the red ruby. The Sun's metal is Gold and his direction is east. His day is Sunday, and he comes into full maturity and brilliance at age 22.

The Vedas adore him as a witness (Sakshi) of all actions. He is the lord of Leo in the Zodiac. He stays one month in each Rasi and takes 365 days or 12 months to complete a round of 12 Rasis. Worship of Surya on Sunday is supposed to bring in manifold benefits to the worshippers. .

Surya and modern Astronomy

Our solar system consists of an average star we call the Sun, the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. It includes: the satellites of the planets; numerous comets, asteroids, and meteoroids; and the interplanetary medium. The planets, most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the Sun in the same direction, in nearly circular orbits.

Our solar system the part of whole solar system, together with the local stars visible on a clear night, orbits the center of our home galaxy, a spiral disk of 200 billion stars we call the Milky Way. Again Our galaxy, one of billions of galaxies known, is traveling through intergalactic space. The order of planets revolving around the Sun are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

On February 14, 1990, the cameras of Voyager 1 pointed back toward the Sun and took a series of pictures of the Sun and the planets, making the first ever "portrait" of our solar system as seen from the outside.

Prayers to please Lord Surya

Surya namaskāra

Lord Surya helps one gain his eyesight and SURYA NAMASKAR will strengthen one's bones, cure illness, however severe it may be, cleanses the devotee from his sins and bestows on him progeny, wealth, good-health and long life. He is the cause for rainfall benefiting the world.

The lord Surya is prayed in the simplest way by folding one's hands in a namaskar at the time of sunrise. A simple chant of Om Suryaye Namah pleases the lord Surya. A Hindu worship Lord Surya at the rising of the Sun, known as Surya namaskāra There are twelve physical postures (asanas), which correspond to the twelve signs of the zodiac. During the sun's apparent journey through the heavens it passes through each of zodiac, and is said to triumph over each sign as it enters its domain. Associated with each other of the twelve positions of Surya Namaskar is a specific mantra. The 12 mantras for surya namaskara:

The Gayatri Mantra is also associated with Surya.

Another hymn associated with Surya is the Aditya Hridayam, recited by the great sage Agastya to Lord Ram (श्री राम) on the warfield before the fight with Ravana in Lanka. .

I called this baby Ravi, because for a while I thought she was a boy.

Ravi means "sun" and is one of the names of Surya, the Sun deity in Hinduism. These kittens and their mama came to me on 1 July so I gave them summer names.

Dark-haired kittens, man, they're so difficult to sex. Luckily i did figure it out before they went to the vet to get neutered lmao.

Legendary Creatures: Aṣṭadiggajas

The Aṣṭadiggajas (Sanskrit अष्टदिग्गज, literally 'eight elephants of the quarters') are eight elephants from Hindu cosmology that guard the eight zones of the universe. They have female elephant companions called the Ashtadikkarinis.

Each pair of elephant guards a particular direction with one of the deva and are named in the Ramayana. They are Airāvata and Abhramu (male and female) in the east, Puṇḍarīka and Kapilā in the south-east, Vāmana and Piṅgalā in the south, Kumuda and Anupamā in the south-west, Añjana and Tāmrakarṇī in the west, Puṣpadanta and Śubhradantī in the north-west, Sārvabhauma and Aṅganā in the north, and Supratīka and Añjanāvatī in the north-east. There are also four elephants that support the earth, Virūpākṣa in the east, Mahāpadmasama in the south, Saumanasa in the west, and Bhadra in the north. In the Matanga Lila, a Sanskrit book dealing with elephants, they are vehicles of the Aṣṭa-Dikpāla (अष्ट-दिक्पाल), who guard the ten directions, which include zenith and nadir.

Airāvata is the king of the elephants and serves Indra. He is described as having four tusks, seven trunks, and being white. He is said to either be born to Iravati (the daughter of Kadru or Bhadramada and Kashyapa, associated with the Iravati [Ravi] river) or from the churning of the ocean of milk (the cosmic ocean where the elixir of life was created). Airāvata guards Svara, the home of the devas, especially Indra's palace in his quarter and was the cause of the churning of the ocean of milk. The elephants are connected to water and clouds, which is connected to Indra defeating Vritra, the personification of drought.

In Thailand, Airāvata is known as Erāvana (เอราวัณ) and is the symbol of Bangkok. In the Thai depictions, he has either three or thirty-three heads (mostly three) often with more than two tusks each head.

The Aṣṭadiggajas were born from the right hand side of the cosmic egg when the Unborn (the creator) broke it open. The Ashtadikkarinis were born from the left hand side. Together, they helped defeat the demons in battle with the gods.

The world elephants stand on the back of the World Turtle (Akūpāra अकूपार) with Jñānarāja (the 'king of knowlege', a 16th century CE astronomer and mathematician), who wrote in Siddhantasundara (which means 'noble treatise') and said 'A vulture, whichever has only little strength, rests in the sky holding a snake in its beak for a prahara [three hours]. Why can [the deity] in the form of a tortoise, who possesses an inconceivable potency, not hold the Earth in the sky for a kalpa [billions of years]?'

I've been thinking about how things happened in the Ma'ilach facility-- Irazor's condition, what happened with Zahine, the One True Voice-- and the more I do, the more that what Creation told everyone doesn't make sense. Maybe it's not that important, in the face of making sure everyone is kept safe from the Corruption, but I think figuring out what's really happening could make it a lot easier for a cure, or some better way of dealing with it could be found. Or if...if someone is behind it, and Creation is covering it up, for some reason."

Lord Surya ☀️ Talon Abraxas

Surya, the Sun, is God incarnate in solar form, a glorious, shining golden orb visible every day. He is Astamurthi, one of the eight forms of Shiva. The Sun alone is the pivot of the entire Universe, the dispeller of darkness, and root cause of the three worlds. He is the deity of great brilliance and is considered the Supreme Soul. There are many names of Lord Surya and each name refers to a particular quality of consciousness - Aditya, Savita, Surya, Mihira, Arka, Prabhakara, Martanda, Bhaskara, Bhanu, Chitrabhanu, Divakara and Ravi.

Surya is the chief of the Navagrahas and is often depicted riding a chariot harnessed by seven horses which represent seven solar rays, seven chakras of the body and seven days of the week.

Surya’s sons, Shani and Yama are responsible for the judgment of human life. Shani provides the results of one’s deeds during life through appropriate punishments and rewards while Yama grants the results of one’s deeds after death.

In Vedic astrology Surya is considered a malefic on account of His hot, dry nature. Surya represents soul, will-power, fame, the eyes, general vitality, courage, kingship, father, authority figures, benevolence, generosity, grandeur, dignity and friendliness.

Surya has the following associations:

Bird: Goose

Gem: Ruby

Metals: Copper and Gold

Direction: East

Food: Wheat

In Tantra yoga, Surya, the planetary deity of the Sun, represents the Universal male principal, while Chandra, the Moon, represents the Universal female or shakti principle. Surya is also associated with Agni, the god of fire.

I like to talk from time to time about the bodies of the gods and appearances of deities, and one of my traditional things is fighting the endless idea of the "gym-god" visual. A long, LLOOONNGG time ago I had stored one of the rare posts evoking fatness as a positive thing and an official trait of gods and mythologies - unfortunately the post is now gone but Internet Archive was there to save the day!

It was a post by the blogger devdutt, about the religion of India and the depictions of Hindu deities - specifically called "The Yaksha's potbelly". Here is a copy of the text below:

We live in times when men and women dream of having a body without fat.  Female models in fashion shows become famous when they look thin and starved.  Male models and Bollywood heroes become famous because of musculature, especially a six-pack abdomen. A far cry from the traditional notions of beauty.

To be fat, in ancient and medieval times, was a sign of affluence, that one had enough to eat. Musculature was associated with being a laborer, thinness with poverty.  Hermits could be thin, servants could have muscles, but the beautiful had to have soft rounded bodies and the rich had to have potbellies.

The modern notions of male beauty have its roots in Greek sculpture where heroes were shown with well-toned bodies, each muscle depicting artistic precision. These have spread via media to our homes. Bollywood heroes today therefore emulate Greek gods.  Even modern poster paintings of Hanuman and Ram and Shiva show them with musculature befitting a body builder, very different from the soft delicate features that Raja Ravi Verma painted.

In sacred songs, Hindu goddesses are described as having ‘deep navels’, ‘full breasts’ and multiple ‘love-handles’ on either side. To have a bony frame was the sign of an old witch and associated with fearsome Tantrik goddesses like Chandi and Dhumvati. Temple images show goddesses as being of ample proportions, full but not fat. Modern notions of feminine beauty, is also influenced by Western ideas, where softness has been replaced by firmness, as the feminist movement saw the former as a sign of weakness.

Kubera, treasurer of the gods, is visualized as a potbellied deity. His protruding stomach embodies a bag that is bursting with money. In traditional India, to have a potbelly was seen as a sign of prosperity. Men and women who did not become fat after marriage were seen as belonging to a loveless or unsuccessful marriage where there was not enough food to feed. Today, a potbelly is seen as a sign of disease, the accumulation of abdominal fat that leads to heart disease.

This medicalization of the potbelly has hurt Ganesha the most. Ganesha, the most popular Hindu deity of the 21st century, is lambodara, the one with a huge belly. It is the container of wealth. He is the god who removes all scarcity and provides food for all. He is associated with vegetation and wealth. His favorite sweet, the modaka, is shaped like a moneybag. His belly represents a warehouse of a farmer that is full of grain. Around the belly is the snake that stops rats from stealing the grain.

Increasingly, artists are visualizing him with muscles and a flat abdomen, in keeping with modern notions of beauty. It is ironical, that symbols associated with poverty in traditional India are becoming images of health and beauty in modern times. Softness and roundness is acceptable only in comedians and villains, while heroes and heroines tend to be more firm and sharp. Perhaps this shift indicates a shift towards a culture that is less gentle and more aggressive – celebrating the gym more than the dining table, muscle more than fat, protein more than sweets.

“You’re saying it’s not at all entirely possible there could be other forms of life out there?” In response to my question he looks towards the sky. Head tipped towards the galaxy and beyond, his eyes roving the stars trying to decipher an answer from the cosmos

“No.” His statement is abrupt.

My gaze on him turns from curious to teasing. “Not at all?” my voice tilts at the end giving my question a teasing tone.

The stars twinkle back in his eyes as he glares at their shining giggles. “Not one bit.” He pauses and turns his glare to me, only to soften when our gaze connects. “You expect me to believe in something I can’t see?”

“You believe in air, in gravity, and in the atoms that hold us together. What is stopping you from believing in magic, in ghosts, ghouls, phantoms, and aliens?” Despite the warm summer night a shiver runs up his spine as the words register in his brain. My passion must be readable all over my face with the way he’s scanning it. Goosebumps litter his neck and I reach a hand up to smooth them down. I laugh, “People believe in Gods and Deities all the time. In divine forces guiding their minuscule mundane lives. And you can’t believe in something even a little mystical.” My scoff comes out more as disbelief than accusatory. I shake my head and my hand moves on his neck with the vibrations.

He wraps a hand around the wrist connecting us as he dips his head to catch my eyes again. His still hold the far off suns as if they were bottled in his iris. “I really, truly, don’t believe in all of that.” I open my mouth to form another argument but he shushed me with a finger against my lips. “I don’t,” he begins again, “believe in it…yet. But, if you’d let me, I want to discover it all with you. Scour its secrets like I’m reading one of my chemistry reports. Unfold its mysteries with you like one of your true crime shows.”

Tucking a piece of hair behind my ear proves difficult with the slight breeze running through the curly strands. He tries anyways. “I’ll be the Ravi to your Pip. I’ll be the Jameson to your Avery. I’ll be the Scully to your Moulder. I’ll be the one by your side helping you figure it all out.”

The words bring a familiar smile to my face, one that only pops up when he says mushy stuff like that. My nose scrunches up and the hand still on my jaw traces the wrinkles on the bridge. 

He smiles, it’s slight, barely there, but the dimples shine just like the heavens above. If only he could see what he looks like. Maybe he’d believe in magic then. 

“Alright, Romeo,” I laugh. “No need to get all swooney on me babe. You’ve already got me by your side, no need to try and woo me into working with you.” My hand on his neck scratches lightly and his eyes close for the briefest of seconds. He lets out a hum and my smile grows into a full blown grin. 

A noise crackles above our heads and, right as we look up, the temperature drops 20 degrees. The sky is too dark to make anything but the stars and the single glowing, zooming orb out. My smile remains when I look back at him. I watch as his own face drops from dimples to down-right confusion. “Hey Romeo.”

“Hmm,” the noncommittal sound is followed by a tilt of his head back down to me. 

“I think we just got our first case.”

33 crores Devi Devta nahi 33 Koti Devta

The concept of “33 crores Devi Devtas” in Hinduism is a concept that has been widely known to all. Also, this has been a much-debated topic among different scholars. And it has been found that the concept is completely misunderstood by many, as there has been a wrong interpretation of Vedic Sanskrit by some foreign scholars. The Atharva Veda, Yajur Veda, and Satapatha-brahmana define “trayastrimsati koti” as 33 gods. The term “koti” is a Sanskrit word that has two meanings; one is “crore” and second is “type”. Hence, it is in their translation that the mistake occurred, and instead of explaining Hinduism in terms of 33 supreme Gods, the concept of 33 crores of Gods came into existence.

Believing the Vedas there are 33 devas and they are classified under the following names:

Adityas/Solar deities

These are 12 in number and are personified deities that correspond to the 12 solar months. Each represents different features of social life. On Sankranti, when the sun changes the zodiac signs, these Adityas change their positions. The 12 Adityas along with their relative attribute are:

Shakra/Indra:  It is the eldest and the leader of the other 11 Adityas

Ansh: Due share

Aryaman: nobility

Bhaag: Due inheritance

Dhatri: ritual skill

Tvashtar: crafting skill

Mitra: Friendship

Ravi/Pushan: Prosperity

Parjanya/ Savitra: word power

Vivasan/ Surya: social law

Varun: fate

Vaman: the law of the cosmos

These all are known to be the protectors that guard and maintain the law. These Vedic Gods are believed to be pure and bright which erases darkness and spread light. Being 12 in number, these are also known as Dvadash Adityas.

Vasus

These are 8 in number and are known as the sub-deities of Indra. These categorical elemental Gods are representative of different aspects of Nature. And these are:

Dhara/ Prithvi ( Earth)

Anila/ Vayu (Wind)

Anal/Agni (Fire)

Prabhas/Surya (Dawn)

Antariksh/Dyaus (Space)

Apas/ Varuna (Water)

Dhruv/Nakshatra (Pole Star)

These are also known as Astha Vasu. The chakra system is related to the seven Vasu, and the eight Vasu Sun is eternal. The followings are the different chakras and the elements they are related with:

According to Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, the 11 Rudras are the ten vital energies or Rudra-Prana, in the body, and the last being the Atma, the soul. The following are the names assigned for Rudra-Prana:

Katame Rudra iti

Rudras have a vital role in the universal work and are the God of Gods, the one that lives in the hearts of gods and other beings. He is the universal lord and is being prayed for moksha (liberation). The Hanuman, Bhairava, Dhumwan, Tara, Baglamukh, Mahakal, Kamal, Chinnamastak, Shodash Srividyesh, and Bala Bhuvanesh, are all Lord Rudras incarnations. The term “Rud” means to weep. The human body constitutes of 10 organs: 5 karmendriyas( motor organs) and 5 gyanendriya( sense organs), with the mind being the 11th. All these in total are Rudra as when they all exit the body, they make people weep. There are some other schools of thought according to which there are 10 pranas and the 11th is the soul.

Ashwini

These are 2 in number. These Vedic Gods are known to be the only God’s physicians; they are the ones who blessed the sages with the knowledge of medicine and treatment. Even the Rig Veda mentions the Ashwins as the savior. Different ancient stories narrate them as vaidya, “life restorers”. In modern terms, they are equivalent to a doctor. There are different stories about their existence in ancient times. The Mahabharata times celebrated them as Nakul and Sahadev, the sons of Kunti (mother of Pandavas). These Vedic Gods are also called Nasatya, which means to return home safely.

Yet another story explains their existence as Ashwini Kumara, the sons of Ashwini. According to the story, the partner of Surya could not stand the heat of the Lord and hence took shelter in a forest. And to hide her identity, she started living there as a mare (female horse). She was blessed with twins in the jungle (the Ashwins), the sons of Lord Surya.

The sages or rishis who were considered to be awakened souls transmitted their knowledge to us through their writings. These writings were called Puranas, Vedas, Upanishads, etc. Atharva Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Rig Veda are the four Vedas known to mankind. These are the root of the entire knowledge, wisdom, and logic. These texts constitute everything; from our evolution to the dissolution of the universe to the 33 Vedic Gods, one can know everything by reading the Vedas. They support the presence of 33 koti Gods and Goddesses, which is misinterpreted to be 33 crores Gods in Hinduism by some foreign scholars. So, there are 33 supreme Devi Devtas (11 Adityas+ 11 Rudras+8 Vasus+2 Ashwinis) that people worship and not 33 crores of Gods.
