like—sorry to harp on this, i'm just still thinking about it—i'm probably more pro-piracy than some people, but i do feel like 'pirating the work of an impoverished disabled trans woman with stage 4 cancer' (see prev post) is. probably a point at which you should rethink what you're up to??? like. i would be thrilled to be told i'm wrong and actually mira bellwether did say at some point that passing her zine around for free was chill (although frankly even then i think there's an argument to be made that it's good to toss some money to marginalized small-time creators whose work you've enjoyed or otherwise benefited from, particularly when they're in dire circumstances and actively fundraising), but like. in the absence of permission from her it really feels bad to me.
also like. this is one of those things where like. it's hard to decide who's really at fault here, bc the OP of the previous post is herself a transfem who i don't think was initially aware of bellwether's situation, and like, if you're just passing around the direct link to the file on transreads.org (that maybe you yourself were passed by someone else, even) you may not actually be aware you're reading something pirated? so at first i was inclined to be most mad at transreads, and be like, ugh, the least they could do would be to include a link to the author's gofundme! but then i went and checked and it turned out they do, actually, if you search for the zine on their site and don't just get linked directly to their copy of the file; so then it's like, okay, maybe really OP's the one to blame, since the link she included in her post bypassed their splash page; but then, as i said above i doubt she was initially aware bellwether was ill, and seems to have subsequently boosted a reblog that included bellwether's gofundme.
so ultimately i think it's like—forget blame, that's beside the point really. if we're pointing fingers we're busy with that and not with helping. but i do think everyone passing that post around (which is thousands of people, by now) should probably make a followup post passing the hat for the author, and make a donation themselves while they're at it, if they possibly can; i did. (and maybe we all ought to be thinking a little harder about giving back to counterculture artists and thinkers before they get sick, while we're at it.)

1. Why did you choose your url?
I love a good oxymoron. Lol. So that’s part of it. 
I went to this work conference thing last February (pre-Covid 😳) where one of the sessions talked about mindset, different types and which are healthier.  
The presenter discussed the ways that blind optimism can be problematic (facts). Then, they talked about pragmatic optimism. They explained how pragmatic optimism allows us to understand the reality of the problems we face while also retaining confidence in our ability to successfully confront them. I really liked it. It gave me language for something I was already practicing in my own life. So I changed my url and here we are.
2. Any side blogs?
No, just my one little blog! Though I have thought about starting a fic rec side blog, a library of sorts. I read so much fic and I recently started to categorize it for myself in my bookmarks to make it easier to find my favorites. So I thought I could use my Monica Geller powers for the good of the fandom, but it hasn’t gone beyond an idea because what is time? 😆
3. How long have you been on tumblr?
7 years, which is nutty! I took a break here and there, but glad to be back and in the 911 LS fandom.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
I’m a procrastinator. Lol. At the time, I was in grad school and looking for new distractions.
6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?
It’s Betty Suarez! Ugly Betty is my favorite show of all time and Betty is the fictional character whose personality best represents me. When we talk about the importance of feeling seen in TV/Media, Betty is the first time I fully felt seen on screen. Several of her storylines resonated with me and my life. She’s my fav, as is America Ferrera who I have loved since her debut on Disney Channel’s Gotta Kick It Up. (My 90s kid is showing again lol). 
I do want to note that recently I have been strongly considering a Carlos Reyes icon…
Betty has some serious competition. 👀
7. Why did you choose your header?
Three words: Carlos Cow Eyes.
8. What’s your post with the most notes?
I can’t just pick one because there are categories 😆. They are all text posts from when I live blog shows, which is funny because normally I don’t think my posts are that interesting. So when a note blows up, it surprises me.  
The post with the most notes ever is this one from May when I decided to watch an episode of Grey’s because April was coming back (I ❤️ Japril) and I was hoping the writers would re-open the endgame door. Apparently others agreed with me and we were rewarded (🙌🏾).
The post with the most notes from my 911 Lone Star shouting is this one from the s2 finale and I love that it’s a post about Nancy. So many of us resonated with her in this moment! #foreveramood
And two of my personal favorites are this one about Sierra and this one about Rafael. Grace and Carlos are my absolute favorite characters on this show, in large part because Sierra and Rafael are incredibly talented and wonderful people.

Nope. I avoid unnecessary conflict/drama in my day to day, so I definitely don’t engage in it here. 🙅🏽‍♀️

If it’s for signal boosting important info and world events, 100%. Reblogging to support content creators/writers is also important and something I try to do often. The superstitious ones have an email chain vibe and I don’t really engage with them. Though I am a little “stitious” and there is always that brief moment of hesitation where I go “should I?”

Yes!! Even if it takes me a little while to reply sometimes.

I'm a newish artist on here and even my friends don't share my posts anymore. Idk what to do bc I keep seeing popular blogs like yours ask for signal boosts and no one bothers and my blog is so small? I feel like I'll never get any attention nvm commissions on here and twitter is almost worse for me.
Hi newish artist anon! Firstly, I don’t know what’s up with your friends, but I would hope they supported you and your work? I know what you mean, though, it’s been a rough period for creators of all types on this site, and I have a feeling it won’t get any better. I wish I could bring you back to the days of reblogs, mutuals screaming about stuff together, and lots of traffic to everyone’s accounts, but... time travel, as far as I can see, is not a viable option. :( Here are some links to some basic tips I wrote out before to managing Tumblr a bit, first and foremost: How to Get Your Art Noticed (On Tumblr)How to Manage Bullying (On Tumblr) How to Sell On ETSY (Super basic) More serious talk under the cut: 
The thing is, also, is that I’m not actually a popular blog. I have a largish sum of followers, but at this point I’ve become aware that a thousand of them are probably porn bots, and at least another 7 thousand or so are hacked accounts/abandoned of friends and mutuals that no longer post or use this site at all.(I say this after exploring some of my older follower’s accounts, a lot of the mutual followed accounts, and a lot more old friend accounts from people I haven’t heard from since 2015 or so.)
 SO many people have left, or were forced off this site, and it’s left a pretty big void for a lot creators like myself and others. It means that a lot of us, while once being decently ‘popular’ are now sort of stagnated to this ‘I have a lot of followers but half my friends are gone and a lot of the followers aren’t actual accounts anymore’ kind of place. Which means, with the whole anti-reblogging front going on, you just... go nowhere. Your posts don’t get outside of your bubble, especially when Tumblr does stuff like hides your posts with links from the tag. :/ 
On the other side of things, If you look at accounts like Pangur and Grim you can really see a difference in account activity and follower interaction. You’ll notice there’s a surplus of activity on multiple types of posts, from personal, to cats, to art, etc. (You’ll also notice a lot of negative stuff, which I honestly don’t miss from the time when I had a lot of activity on this blog lol) That kind of blog is what I would consider an actual ‘popular’ blog, especially since the owner does a lot of interactive posts and gets actual interactions with them. The point I’m trying to make with all this, is that there is no one true way to get interaction on this site, and I don’t really think there’s a perfect way to gain it without, honestly, luck. Even two years ago, I would say something like, ‘You may be able to get people’s attention by working hard at focusing on post times, popular trends, networking, working with other artists, joining zines, etc.’ But that just doesn’t work anymore. Hard work does not automatically equal popularity or give you attention and interactions, especially not on this site. 
Things have changed, unfortunately in a very negative way for creators, and we’re all sort of left trying to find a place that works like Tumblr used to. A place we can congregate yet have our personal spaces, while exploring our ‘likes’ and mutual fandoms etc. A place where a little extra work on your content and following trends and posting at good times was all you really needed to get at least some interactions and attention. 
Twitter is also not good at that, and I know a lot of my friends and mutuals are there and we are following one another, but Twitter is just not made for creators. It really just isn’t. It’s fast-paced, it’s styled for short, quippy responses to media and other people, and it’s terrible with image quality never mind the whole bad cropping situation. If you able, by luck and some hard work, to manage a following, even then there is no promise of interaction or commissions. People move on, people ‘like’ and skip to the next post, people ignore donations posts, people scroll past art if they can’t see the whole thing, people are looking at Twitter at midnight after a long day of work and have no energy to look at your kickstarter for your original work, people spend all day looking and talking about politics and are burnt out, etc. etc.  
I know this is... not a cheerful message for anyone, but I wanted to be honest. There isn’t one way to get attention for your work, and there is no promise that doing ‘one simple trick!’ will work for you when it worked for others. Just by asking and wanting to be proactive about this is a great way to get going, though!
That being said, I would love to reblog/retweet your work and never feel bad for asking me for a signal boost. Seriously, I may not be a popular blog but if you need commissions or donations and need a boost, It’s worth a try and I’m absolutely open to sharing your work and posts.

I can’t focus on anything enough to write about Homestuck today, so I’m gonna talk about something that matters a lot more instead. I know this isn’t like, part of My Brand, but Puerto Rico is part of who I am and why I’m here. And since I couldn’t be part of the day of action officially, this is what I’m doing instead. So here’s what it comes down to:
I can’t stop thinking about the Homestucks in Puerto Rico. 
And yes, it’s myopic to focus on a people suffering who happen to be part of a fandom. Everyone is human and nobody deserves this kind of suffering.  Puerto Ricans deserve help because they’re people, full stop.
But people weren’t designed for numbers to track this scale of suffering, and even having spent part of my life there, the devastation my little island is going through has been more than I can relate to, or even imagine. 
So it’s this particular memory that sticks out for me, and those particular people that stand in for the unfathomable many who are suffering right now. I’m going to tell you guys a story, and try to put the place I remember into the context of the Island’s current struggle, and the sorely lacking support of the American government. 
Then I’m going to talk about what we can do to help. 
I can guarantee that at least one of those things is something you can do. Even if you can’t do anything but blog about fandom and talk to friends online--and trust me, I get it if that’s where you are. There’s still something important I want you to consider trying. 
If you have the spoons and mental wherewithal, and you care at all about what I do here, or about Homestuck, or about the friends you’ve made and the people you’ve met through fandom, or about any story that has ever moved you to reach out and make a friend,
Then I hope you can find the time to read and signal boost this. No pressure. I know it’s hard and we’re all tired. Still, It would mean a lot to me.

Upd8 culture isn’t something that all the fans here have been exposed to. Fans have gotten flashes of it like on 10/25 last year or, of course, with Hiveswap’s release. But back during the days of Homestuck’s height in popularity, we were all wired, all the time. 
An Upd8 could happen any second, and anything and everything could change with any upd8. This was the height of update culture, and it was like being on a neverending rollercoaster. It was a sense of communal excitement and thrill that made me feel connected to everyone sharing the ride.

I went to a con with friends only once in PR, but while there, we hung nearby a Homestuck meetup. I didn’t really engage with them, but I did have MSPA Notifier on my phone, and it just so happened an update hit.

I remember grinning and telling my (Non-Homestuck) friends to watch.  That was the first and only time I got to yell the word “UPD8” to someone else in person. The result was spectacular.
The explosion of yelling and the flurry of activity was too overwhelming to follow. Suddenly, teens were yelling and scrambling to get near the closest screen. The one who sticks out in my head is a God Tier John--pretty sure the outfit was homemade--pressing his tablet up against a wall.

For a good ten minutes, we watched as what was a pretty chill meetup beforehand talked and traded screens with fervent excitement.  My friends, exposed to nothing but my self-indulgent blather about the comic up until then, looked at me in bewilderment and asked: “What did you do?”
But of course, I didn’t do anything. I was just a lucky messenger. What moved me, what moved us all with the same joy and excitement, was a shared moment of love for a story. A common passion. 
I didn’t make friends with any of them that day, and I wish I had now. Really, I just wish I knew if they were alright. Any of them. 
I wonder if they enjoyed Hiveswap in the few days between the release and Maria, or if they got the chance to play it at all before the electricity grid collapsed. I wonder how many got off the island. How many have stayed behind. 
How many are LGBT, now cut off from access to what was my only lifeline on the largely conservative island? I think about the reports of sky-high rates of depression and PTSD pouring in whenever I can bring myself to listen.
I hope all of those kids are still alive and well. I should mention: All of these tweets and news reports are verifiably true. I can confirm them myself, because I hear the same thing whenever I manage to get in contact with anyone on the island. 
My family hears supplies are coming, but never seem to see them arrive. The woman who drove me to school contacted me today, saying the same thing. Wherever there’s contact on the ground, there are reports of inadequate support and desperate need. Food in grocery stores is near running out.
Everyone I know who is able making plans to leave. Everyone I know cries and hurts most for those who cannot make these plans. Those who are stuck. Those who will be left behind to survive the nightmare.
What can we do for them?
Of course, donating to verified and trustworthy charities is an option. For those of us who are able:
Donate to Puerto Rican Farmers.
The Hispanic Federation’s Disaster Relief & Recovery Fund.
Eco-Kit uses Amazon to distribute life-saving survival tools.
And More.
But maybe even more important than that is adding our voices politically:
Petition for Immediate Large-Scale Relief Package for Puerto Rico.
Use this handy Call Script to find and call your representatives.
We can also simply talk, learn, and educate. It goes without saying that this devastation is in part a product of climate change. But we can also talk about the Jones Act that slows aid to Puerto Rico. 
We can reckon with Puerto Rico’s long history of colonial subjugation by the U.S. And we can increase understanding of the massive debt crisis that threatened the island even before the hurricane.
I will continue to post about this when I am able and have useful information to spread, but it may also help to follow blogs such as @tumblricans if you’re able. 
But even if you can’t do any of this: Believe me, I understand. I know how hard and unbearable it all is. 
Even if you can’t do anything but talk to people online, try to keep your mind off it, try to focus on fandom and friends and whatever gets you through these days,
There’s still something you can do.
Choose to be kinder. Here, in this space that you share with so many progressives, coming from so many walks of life, that have all been hurt by this world through so many cruel and unusual punishments. Even if nowhere else.
Choose to be kinder here, in this nebulous place where many of us come to forget our sorrows and share our joys and pains with others. 
Try to remember that everyone has a story. That everyone has something they’re dealing with, and you have no way to know what it is. Try to choose kindness and compassion over instinctual judgment and ideological superiority.
Extend this kindness to creators as well as your fellow fans and users, because the people who make art for us are people who are struggling and trying hard just like me and you. 
Extend this kindness to yourself and your friends in your moments of weakness, just...remember to extend it to your perceived “enemies” on this website, too. In the grand scheme of things, they simply don’t exist. 
Fandom spaces on Tumblr and Ao3 are predominantly made up of lgbt women, and lean highly towards progressive sentiments besides. Wherever we turn to this hyper-critical behavior, we are making threats out of allies. It’s not necessary, and worse, it drives us apart.
Remember that ultimately, we are all in this together. The world is a scary place right now. There are people out there in the world who deeply and truly want to hurt us.  You can even find them online, if you really want to. 
But like...fellow fans invested in the progressive agenda? Creators making progressive art? They are not your enemies, and for the progressive agenda and anyone identified as basically any kind of minority, the shit is hitting and will increasingly continue to hit the whirling device. 
We all need support now more than ever, and it is really only going to come if we begin to choose to support each other. 
And that’s important work to do. Because the kinder we are, the closer we are, the better we can connect. The better we can organize. And the more good we can do for places like Puerto Rico or people like Rune.
Sometimes, making the world a better place is just a matter of being nice to each other. That alone could well have the power to change everything.

Mental Health Month
This month also marks the 71st Mental Health Month, as observed by Mental Health America. We all face challenges that can impact our mental health, and 1 in 5 of us will experience a mental illness during our lifetime. 
The events of the last couple of months have shined a particularly bright light on the importance of taking care of our mental health. During a time when our physical health is at the forefront of our minds, our mental health needs to be treated with the same care. In fact, many of us are feeling like our mental performance and health is suffering due to stress.
Before we discuss what we can do to manage our stress levels, we’ll explore exactly what stress is. 
Understanding Stress
When you hear the term stress, you might associate it with something like how you feel being under a tight deadline or when you’re stuck in traffic. This is known as acute stress which we’ll discuss, but we’ll also share the other types of stress and how they can affect you.
Acute stress
The most common form of stress is acute stress. Reactive thinking to a perceived threat (including a specific phobia like spiders or clowns) usually causes it. This perceived threat can be either physical, emotional, or psychological. Acute stress can be associated with varying forms of emotional and physical distress. These include physical symptoms like stomach problems, headaches, and an increased heart rate.
Episodic acute stress 
People who experience frequent bouts of acute stress could be diagnosed with episodic acute stress disorder. The extended frequent over-arousal or extended hyper-arousal of your nervous system can lead to ongoing physical and emotional anguish. Episodic acute stress is also associated with more obvious or serious physical and mental symptoms. These include extreme emotional distress, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and even immune system compromise. 
Chronic stress
Chronic stress is the type of stress that lasts over time, and it can lead to irreversible physical and mental damage if left untreated. This can include impaired cognitive performance, heart disease, and many other serious side effects. Things like negative childhood experiences or a traumatic event later in life could cause chronic stress. 
A certain level of stress is inevitable in life. But if left unmanaged, it can have dangerous side effects on not only our mental health, but our physical health, as well. 
While we shared that 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, the American Psychological Association shares another startling statistic: “more than three-quarters of adults report physical or emotional symptoms of stress, such as headache, feeling tired or changes in sleeping habits.”

Meet Biohacking
