A Trip to the RR Diner Pop-Up in L.A.
So I drove up from San Diego and picked up Scott an hour north and we made our way through Los Angeles after-work traffic to the short-lived RR Diner pop-up on Melrose Ave. It opened on 10/16 and closes a week after. We arrived at about 7:05 to a substantial line of people wanting to get into a small space before the scheduled closing time of 8:00. It didnât look like it was going to happen.
I was just in jeans, white shirt and navy sport coat, but Scott got kudos for finding a great facsimile of Dougie Jonesâ lime green jacket from a thrift store. That it was a ladies jacket didnât matter. Whatâs your problem?Â
The first thing we noticed, waiting in line, was the signage, which provided good facsimiles of the RR signs and the famous Welcome to Twin Peaks sign, although for some reason the RR sign wasnât lit up until the store was ready to close. Anyway, we inched along, taking pictures and inhaling propane leaking from one of those warmers restaurants use for outdoor diners, and while it was about 8:00, it looked like we and anyone else left were going to get in, if only for a few moments or so.
The store is in an old Johnny Rockets and very small, really just a guest checkout stand, diner bar and fixed bar stools, with no room for booths. Rather than try to approximate the RRâs interior, they mostly emphasized the Red Room, with a wall of red velvet curtains suitable for posing against.Â
There was room for one wardrobe rack that, aside from some RR uniforms, didnât have much in the way of easily recognizable Twin Peaks costumes. Neither Scott nor I remembered which female character wore a leopard coat, so let us know if you recall. Lelandâs vintage record player played the TP: The Return soundtrack as we got our turn at the bar and checked out the merch. There were embroidered patches ($10 ea.) for Welcome to Twin Peaks, Big Edâs Gas Farm, the bloody Fire Walk With Me note, a broken locket patch with âTâ on one half and âPâ on the other, RR Diner, and maybe one or two more Iâm forgetting. I donât think there was a Twin Peaks Sheriffâs Department patch, but a lucky woman next to us thought to ask if they had a Bookhouse Boys patch and the clerk found the last one for her.Â
There were handsomely designed skateboard decks hanging behind the bar for Cooper, Log Lady, Laura wrapped in plastic and Lauraâs prom queen pic. A Darn Good Coffee mug, Andyâs mug, RR Diner hat, a few varieties of lunchboxes, Dr. Jacoby red and blue sunglasses, and Jacobyâs gold shovel hat, of which the clerk was wearing the last one. There was a Jacobyean âShovel the Shit to Get to the Truthâ inspirational poster in gold lettering, with three gold shovels, that was pretty nice but maybe a bit pricey at $50. No hot coffee left, but I at least had a cup of Lynchâs cold brew, which was delicious.
We talked a bit with the people working there, who were all very nice and seemed pretty informed on the show, and a trio of customers including two young women in RR Diner uniforms asked to take pics with us, and one of the workers photographed us against the red curtains.Â
All in all, a pretty fun experience despite the time expended. If you go, go early, as the pie goes quickly, and expect more of a store experience rather than a real diner or museum quality recreation of the RR; i.e. learn from us.Â
--Chris Allen
BONUS: We had to eat somewhere, and had already driven past the more restaurant-heavy part of Melrose and didnât really want to backtrack, so we ended up at the promisingly-named The Burgerian. I think there is a very good chance this restaurant will be gone within a year. Not that it was bad, but it hadnât really figured out a distinctive or consistent identity. If you call yourself The Burgerian, you should offer more than two beef-based burgers besides the choose-your-toppings version. We werenât really sure exactly what The Original had: cheese (doesnât specify what kind), veggie slaw, egg, and something called âpork ham,â which Iâm guessing is just ham, presumably thin-sliced. The Heart Attack was a triple burger with bacon and three cheeses. The other three choices were a Veggie burger, chicken breast sandwich, and a Shrimp burger that promised a shrimp patty, veggie slaw and more shrimp on top. I donât think Iâve ever had shrimp ground into a patty. Maybe it works but we went pretty traditional with our own choices.Â
There were other oddities, beef sliders along with kimchi rice ball sliders and a kimchi empanada as the only âSmall Bitesâ offering. Apparently their garlic fries are loaded with parmesan and one of their best items, but we split onion rings with ranch and they were very good. The menu claimed the Asado plate was their specialty, which was interesting in that it was $21.99 and the only clearly Mexican item on the menu, unless you count the kimchi empanada, which I donât. Not counting mayo, ketchup or regular mustard, there were over a dozen dressings and sauces available for free on request, which is nice but I think also adds to the confusion. The menu seems to want to be a lot of different things--a little Korean bulgogi here, Asado there, and if you want salad, well, thereâs one offering, a chicken salad with arugula and dried cranberries that probably starts to look a bit gross once the avocado and feta cheese mush together.Â
Desserts are a similar headscratching mix: âcream cheese pie,â which Iâm guessing is plain cheesecake, Nutella alfajores (sandwich cookies), and Southern favorite, pecan pie. Huh? If youâre thirsty, thereâs a decent selection of beers, sparkling water, some wine (by the bottle only, burger lovers!), soda, guarana, Vienna iced coffee (with ice cream!) and even bottomless Mimosas, which must pair well with something on this menu. Donât get me wrong, the burger was fine, if a little overcooked and overpressed. Apparently the buns are homemade and look kind of like an unshiny brioche but arenât as buttery or tasty. Caramelized onions had little flavor, and the cheddar cheese used wasnât sharp. A few tweaks and the burgers could be really good, but in general, they should figure out exactly what their identity is before they donât have one. Decor is a mix of a nicely designed stainless wire ceiling fixture, attractive bathroom sink basin with an old floor, boring tables and chairs, a couple TVs and two or three Asian beer signs that suggest a different restaurant. I still canât get over this menu, noticing a section called âSuggestions If You Are Drinking (To Share),â which I guess is if youâre getting loaded on bottomless mimosas and want something spicy and plentiful to soak it up. Why can you only get Mac & Cheese as an $18 item (presumably to share) with Spicy Beef, and is the Spicy Beef the same as the Asado beef? So many questions.
Sexists should also take note, while there is no sign of humor anywhere else (at least not intentionally), the bathroom doors are marked, âBLAâ for the menâs room and âBLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLA...â for the ladiesâ. Weâre bores, and the ladies canât stop yapping, right, fellas?Â

Chapter One: A CENTURY OF FASHION
Key Concepts: âŞď¸The Social and Cultural conditions that affect fashion. âŞď¸Major Developments and trans, decade by decade. âŞď¸The designers and other innovator who influence fashion.
This chapter  explores the way in which fashionable items in a woman's wardrobe became accessible to a mass female market during the nineteenth and twentieth century thanks largely to the interaction of fashion requirements themselves and developments in pattern drafting and grading, but also supported by contemporary social and cultural change. The point is that fashion has always been changing and evolving- and at any time in the past, though it may be history to us now, that change was usually dramatic. there are many different ways to determine when one decade begins and the former one ends- sometimes it's a momentous event, such as the stock market crash of 1920 or the end of World War II, in 1945.Social, cultural and economic; these events are related to major fashion trends and developments of fashion of the period, and the designers and other individuals who had a strong influence at the time are noted.
SOCIAL CULTURAL CONDITIONS:
you may have heard the old adage about hemlines going up when the stock market is on the rise-and falling when times get tough.
Fashion Trends and developments: It's said that for every  action there's  and equal and opposite reaction, and we'll see how this holds true for fashion. During much of the nineteenth century, particularly the conservative  Victorian era, clothing was straitlaced and bodies were covered up. While the wealthier population had always looked to Europe  for aristocratic fashion design, the desire for gentility and refinement became a broader concern as Americans on the whole became more settled and established.
Women's dress became more settled and established. Women's dress was carefully chosen to show their respectability. the voluminous skirts of the mid-1800s were reduced to the slimmer bustle silhouette. The change from homemade to ready-made apparel was another significant trend. Woman also began working in factories and offices, the apparel industry responded to the demand for practical clothing by adapting the men's shirt for women in a blouselike form.
The 1910 woman took over jobs in heavy industry when men were drafted into the armed forces.
Paris was the epicenter for innovation, and many designers started their businesses during this period, including  Jean Patou, Coco Chanel and Madeleine Vionnet. America ready-to-wear manufacturers  rushed to copy them.
THE 1920s:Â FASHION GETS MODERN
The Edwardian corset was meant to accentuate a woman's breasts and hips, while cinching the body at the waist, and dramatically curving the back. With the busk now being positioned straight down as opposed to inward, women were finally able to breathe a bit better. This takes the idea that pain is beauty to a whole new level!
THE 1930s: MAKING DO
After the Womenâs Suffrage Movement, womenâs fashions took a drastic turn. Frowned upon for wearing makeup, chopping off their hair, smoking, and drinking, these "flapper" women abandoned their female form and wore straight-cut dresses that were hiked above their knees and bras made specifically to flatten their chests. This look, created by Coco Chanel and termed "garconne" was also about comfort--they continued without the corsets, but also ditched other uncomfortable undergarmets to move more freely during the Jazz Age.
According to The Smithsonian, the cloche hat was actually invented in 1908 by a woman named Caroline Reboux. During the Jazz Age, it became increasingly popular because women loved the look of the hat paired with their Eton cropped hair.
THE 1930s: MAKING DO
Moving away from the Chanel "garconne" look of the 1920s, women of the this decade returned to more feminine shapes in their wardrobes. The puff sleeve was said to help bring back the curves of a womanâs body, while also helping to create a curve if the woman didnât have one. According to Elizabeth Leese in Costume Design in the Movies, Joan Crawford wore a puff-sleeved gown in the movie Letty Lynton which popular department store Macyâs replicated--and they ended up selling 500 thousand dresses nationwide.
THE 1940s:Â WAR AND DUTY
Much of the decadeâs fashion was based on what many call civilian uniforms. These clothes, marked "CC41" for "civilian clothing 1941," were made to be durable and affordable, not fashionable. "Rosie the Riveter," (a character placed on government advertising that was meant to recruit women to the workforce), became one of the most iconic images of the decade. Women rolled up the sleeves of their utility outfits, sported a cloth in their hair, added a bit of red lipstick, and went to work. Along with the lack of materials came creative solutions for clothing--women  repurposed old clothing, bedsheets and other scrap materials with patterns so their wardrobes werenât so monotonous.
THE 1950s: NEW PROSPERITY
Social + Culturally:  Film and TV icons (Marylin Monroe, Doris Day, Grace Kelly) and Music (Elvis) Trends: Softer and fuller styles, Cardis and Poodle Skirts InďŹuences: Dior, Balmain, Chanel in Paris while McCardell, Norell peak in the US, a variety in design with the likes of a structured and dramatic Scaasi to a âcomfort for active womenâ designer Bonnie Cashin.
THE 1960s: TIMES ARE A-CHANGING
These social movements of each decade generated their own fashions with help from international celebrities. From Englandâs Twiggy and The Beatles and Franceâs Brigitte Bardot, women in America began trying new trends, one of which was the boot. Before this decade, the idea of wearing boots for style was unheard of--they were simply worn to overcome the elements. The go-go boot, named after the French word "la gogue" for happiness, was a calf high plastic boot and can be credited to designer AndrĂŠ Courrèges. As the hemlines of the decade were hiked, the height of the go-go boot rose to meet it. By the end of the decade, the focus of the boot became more about the height and shape of the heel than the height of the boot itself.
Pearls
While pearls had been popular among upper classes since the Middle Ages, the '60s brought about fashion pearls that were much less expensive, usually made out of plastic. These pearls were supposed to convey social status, while also promoting femininity and class.
THE 1970s: FASHION AND THE ME DECADE
Women and minorities, equal rights, poor econ-omy, Mary Tyler Moore.
Bell Bottoms
One of the most popular fashion items in the '70s was bell-bottom pants (for both men and women). While bell-bottom pants had started their rise in the '60s with non-conformist youth, the '70s welcomed an era of mass-produced flared pants in a plethora of different fabrics.
InďŹuences: From YSL to Anne Klein sportswear
THE 1980s: POP CULTURE AND EXCESS
The 1980s was a decade of self indulgence. Women looked for fashion inspiration from television shows, movies, and music videos and the fashions were over the top. Women were now becoming a large part of the workplace and were told that they needed to look the part. The "power suit" emerged as a womanâs go-to outfit for the corporate world, complete with immensely padded shoulders and a straight jacket cut. The thought was that the wider the shoulders were, the smaller the waist looked.
InďŹuences: From Lacroix, Gautier, Yamamoto to Karan, Lauren
THE 1990s: FASHION IN THEÂ INFORMATION AGE
Minimalism, Informality, Layering
According to Refinery 29, the platform shoe hasnât always been about fashion. They were used to help royals walk through mud in the medieval times, boosted the height of Greek thespians on stage, and were actually outlawed by parliament in the 1670s! After many ins and outs in the fashion world, they made a huge comeback in the '90s as a go-to accessory for the popular British pop group, the Spice Girls. As soon as department stores saw the demand, they mass produced the item and had them on every girl that was willing to jeopardize her walk for fashion.
InďŹuences:  Calvin Klein, Dries, Sander - âInternationalismâ with fashion, McQueen to Givenchy
                    THE 21ST CENTURY
In the '00s, fashion, and indeed the Arts in general, looked to the past for inspiration, arguably more so than in previous decades. Vintage clothing, especially from the Sixties, Seventies, and Eighties became extremely popular and fashion designers often sought to emulate bygone styles in their collections.
The early '00s saw a continuation of the minimalist look of the Nineties in high fashion. Later on, designers began to adopt a more colorful, feminine, excessive, and 'anti-modern' look. Name brands became of particular importance among young people and many celebrities launched their own lines of clothing. Tighter fit clothing and longer hair became mainstream for many men and women. Rap music also had a considerable influence on popular fashion, in the early part of the 2000s.
Museums
The history of fashion is vast. My visit to a local museum only touched upon clothing from the 1750-1920âs. What about fashion from years before the 1750? There is a wonderful tour that the Metropolitan Museum of Art offers called the Fashion in Art, a tour led by Costume Institute that discusses costume history within the context of the Museum's collections of armor, textiles, paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts. An amazing way to see how fashion inďŹuenced or was expressed by various cultures starting from Ancient Greece to modern times. If you ever have the opportunity to experience it, I highly recommend it. And, when seeking information, doing research, or just trying to fulďŹll a curiosity you may have, donât forget to visit a local museum, his-torical society, or library. You donât have to live in a metropolitan area to ďŹnd beautiful references of fashions. These gems are eve-rywhere.
