Discovering the bit of genealogy you did was indeed correct is so fun it's like having a detective genius moment. The reverse of that when you find some new document and it turns out that there were two people with the same name born at roughly the same time in the same place and you picked the wrong one sucks and now you have to go through and delete an entire branch of the tree sucks though. The similar but unrelated experience of thinking you've discovered some fun fact only to discover it was already in some form part of the family lore and nobody told you is just sort of meh. I'm sure confirming some known piece of family lore is very exciting but unfortunately nobody ever tells me anything so I've yet to experience that.
#was showing my grandmother pictures of her home town which progressed to google maps which progressed to address books and she confirmed#that the person (well name really tbh i know so little) i thought was her grandfather was indeed her grandfather#similar thing happened with my other grandmother's grandparents i thought i found my great grandfather but wasn't sure#and my great aunt said her dad's parents were buiried next to him but he couldn't remember their names and when we went to his grave#low and behold there were his parents with the same names and dates i thought they'd have#the confirming unknown family lore has happened to me twice. i discovered my grandad is related to George formby and it turns out he already#knew that (or at least that there was some connection to george formby)#i was telling my dad about this welsh Methodist were descended from and he was like oh yeah apparently we're descended from the guy who#wrote bread of heaven that's why it was played at opas funeral (said welsh Methodist didn't write it but did translate it into english)#maybe if i do ancestry and confirm that my great grandfather was indeed a Hungarian circus performer I'll get to experience the confirming#family lore thing#genealogy
