"shit." scaramouche murmured as his phone died. he's lost in the town he moved into with his friends, getting away from his family and all the drama that came with it. it was cold as the breeze danced and swayed his, biting him through the sweatshirt that was nearly thinning out. he kept walking, the street was bathed in the golden light. what a headache... he thought to himself.

"yeoow!"

what the hell was that? scaramouche looked up as a cat went falling down. can cats land on their feet? as he kept questioning this theory, he panicked and tried to catch the black cat into his hands. he managed to catch the cat on the collar just before putting on the ground. "oh my god."

"meow!" the cat replied back... or seemed like it was. its green eyes bored into his indigo ones. "do you have an owner little guy? where's your home?" scaramouche asked politely, sitting on his knees as the cat blinked at him.

"meow!"

"i dont think you have a home?"

the cat seemed to sass back, "meow?" then it pranced around scaramouche, making the bell on the collar ring. a little lightbulb appeared on his head, scaramouche pet the cat a little. "oh of course you do. why were you jumping out of windows? you are not a spiderman... erm... spider-cat."

"meeeeoow!"

"ok sure. but where is your home? i don't think i can hand you back like this? you're super dirty from the fall."

the cat looked like it scoffed at scaramouche, as if it was saying, "how dare you!"

"sorry... um," he glanced at the collar's nametag. it was silver and engraved on it was "tofu", he flipped it around to see if the collar label had the owner's number or address. it didn't. what??? "tofu. i dont know where you live."

"mew."

"ok, im taking you home with me until we find your owner. i'll ask kokomi to print out flyers or something."

"meow?????"

CHAPTER NINE: AN INVITATION

the sun peeked out through the blinds, scaramouche's eyes fluttering open. his hand patted around the bed, as if something or someone was missing. jolting up when he realized that the feline was gone, he looked around, worried. just before he remembered, he wasn't my cat. he's name's cat. but even though, he had only spent a fraction of living with tofu versus tofu with name, he felt like he has bonded with the black kitten.

he sighed, stretching back, noticing a new notification on his phone.

// tofu's (real) parent, name: hey, cat thief!

what the hell? he was just thinking of your cat and you texted him. maybe this is a chance. a universe from the gods even. wait what is he thinking? is he really thinking of using you for your cat?

maybe...

he swiped your notifcations open, he has nothing else to do. well, that's a little mean to say. you were nice enough to even be "co-parents" with him. not to mention, all of his friends are busy and childe's probably be out with yoimiya.

what the hell does she mean by be back??

accept call from unknown number?

he accepted the call. "holy shit." your phone was facing you at first until you flipped it to the ceiling. meows were heard in the background.

scaramouche sat outright on his bed,"what?"

"i didn't think you'd pick up." you replied, nervously laughing.

"well, you said, you have my number, right? is tofu doing alright?"

"well," you propped the camera up, holding tofu. you were probably thankful he gave you a chance to change the topic. "of course, he is. look, tofu, it's the thief who stole you!!" tofu meowed, his eyes gleaming.

scaramouche smiled faintly when he saw the black feline. "hi, tofu... sorry for calling you raven."

tofu seemed to look at him judgmentally, "meow! mew miao."

"that's kind of mean to say, tofu. you don't call people bastards."

scaramouche raised a brow, "do you actually understand what he's saying?"

tofu glared at him as he mumbled a sorry. he can't believe he's getting humbled by a cat. "well, at least, i think i do. i had tofu since i was a kid, y'know? anyway, tofu, it's your day to pick out what place you want to go. we forgot to make content when you were out." you chided your cat. his cat? both of yours's cat?

"meeow."

"cat cafe is the usual but maybe we can change it up. cat thief," do you even know his name? "do you have any ideas where to bring him? where did you bring him?"

"the park? the library?" he suggested. but he noticed the ideas would be shot down by the way you looked at him.

"wouldn't they restrict him from it?" you asked as he waved his hand as an "ehhh" motion.

"not if you have money." he flexed. wait, why is he flexing this? is this arrogant? nah.

he watched your face fall. "YOURE RICH?????"

scaramouche didn't really want you to know his actual background. he was surprised that you didn't recognize him from the raiden industry or whatever his mother's doing. "something from the lines of that." he changed the subject. "so what's a place you haven't went with tofu?"

"anywhere with cats are allowed. i think, we could do that trend of whatever they touch, i'd buy."

"do you have enough money for that?"

"i think so."

scaramouche offered the idea, he might as well go, "i'd come." plus, tofu would be there and you, he guess. you're kind of cute but also tofu would be there.

"REALLY?"

"yeah, can i wear a mask though?"

"of course, whatever makes you comfortable. thank you so much! ill send you the location."

scaramouche waved bye as you ended the call. is it a bit crazy for letting this happen? if this attraction to you turns into something more, he has to end this.

PROLOGUE: MISSING TOFU ?!

it was quiet in your apartment. …too quiet. usually tofu is causing trouble at home while trying to get your attention. you walked into the living room; ayaka dubbed it “the tofu lair”. you waited to hear a meow that welcomes you home every night. he doesn’t need the lights to recognize its you in your apartment. the light bulbs flickered on; oh archons, you need to change out the bulbs. they’re so dim. you skimmed through the living room, not one thing was moved or out of place

wait a minute.

he wasn’t in the living room at all. what?? how did this happen?? you frantically moved around your apartment. you could practically be spiderman at this point because you’re scaling your walls. but tofu wasn’t in sight.

a wind breeze kissed you through your clothes. wait… it couldn’t be, right? you turned to the window that’s next to tofu’s bed. walked closer and closer…

the window was cracked open but just enough for something or someone to slip out. you opened the window even further until it couldn’t open more; you peeked out the window and picked something up on the windowsil. a single black fur. fuck.

you frantically pulled out your phone and texted the groupchat. (because in every inconvincements, you text the group chat. so me)

you looked into your security app, frantically clicking on the screen and silently crying when it loaded too slow. until it finally loaded in and you re-winded the video, it was pretty much just noise in the tapes. then a purple haired figure came around... they're skind of cute. then you skipped WAY too far and tofu just disappeared from the streets. what just happened?

wait… what? you skipped to the section you were just before. the figure looked at tofu's collar and just picked up tofu? WHAT?? the cutest guy you’ve ever laid your eyes on fucking stole your cat. what a fucking thief????

CHAPTER EIGHT: DOESN'T HURT TO TRY it's been so long since you've made any content especially when you went on hiatus because tofu was missing and he was the star of the show. not like your name was on the channel at all, no longer yourstrulyname but actually, yourstrulytofu! all jokes aside though, the channel did start off of as a hobby, but after you gained more followers and views, it began to be tiring.

maybe the hiatus was nice. tofu meowed, curling at your feet. picking up the feline up, you cradled him, "hello, tofuu! it's time to make a video about you coming back, right?"

"meow." he replied as you nodded,

"youre right we don't have to." you walked to your desk, placing the little pet into your lap. the cat curled, retorting back,

"meow." (don't put words in my mouth.)

you laughed nervously, "sorry, you're right, let's make the video. man, if only that thief gave you back faster," you picked him up again, "and if only that thief wasn't so cute! if he wasn't, i'd be a criminal all over the local and international news!"

"haha, not funny?"

"meow." (you're so weird.) you quickly changed the topic as tofu glared at you weirdly, "i missed you, y'know!"

opening one of the cabinets, you retrieved a treat, feeding him one. "meow." (i missed you too)

"aw, tofu, you're so sweet. okay, let's do that video now. do you think anyone's free?"

the cat tilted his head, meowing back, "meow, meowaya meow. meow, lumeow mew meow. yoimeow, meow meow." (no, not really, ayaka is doing content. lumine is with her brother and yoimiya is with her boyfriend.)

now, you were confused, "i don't remember telling you this."

"meow." tofu replied to a bit faster.

"facetime, right... i thought you were asleep! you trickster!"

"meow... meow meow." (ummm... the video.) tofu looked the other way, burying himself into your lap. as you nodded, prepping the camera on your desk. tofu sat upright on your lap. as the star of the show, he always has to look his best.

after recording and uploading the video,

"you're right. tofu, what do you want to do? after we upload this video, what should we do now? don't look at me like that, yes, this is content making. im lonely, i need someone to hang with."

"meow."

"you're not making me lonely don't worry. do you think scaramouche would like to join us."

CHAPTER SEVEN: THE CAT DROP OFF

waiting for scaramouche to arrive with tofu took awhile but thank god, ayaka was there with you. even though, you had met him before, that was before knowing he was the one who took your beloved pet. ayaka insisted that you shouldn't have forgiven him so quickly but what's the harm in a cute guy? maybe, you shouldn't think that but c'mon? you were seated on the window seats with ayaka, sipping on a hot chocolate with a paw print while ayaka stirred her matcha tea.

"so, when is this 'scaramouche' guy coming to the cafe? doesn't he work here?" ayaka asked, stirring the tea a bit harsher than before. you noticed that she's wary of scaramouche, which is fair, since he is a random guy, you met and haven't gone through the ayaka kamisato's suspicion radar.

you replied, sitting down your drink on its saucer, "soon! i texted him a while back and yes, he does work here."

ayaka threw out some questions that are plausible in this case. "if he does work here, why isnt he clocked in yet? what if he doesn't come and takes your cat away?" but you feel like scaramouche wouldn't do that.

"i've spoken to him-"

ayaka interuppted, "in real life or only on text."

you sighed, "only on text... but! he wouldn't do that. trust me, even if he did, i could ask one of our mutuals to bug him... y'know venti, right?" ayaka nodded as she finally decided to agree to disagree.

it's been around 20 minutes and scaramouche hasn't arrived yet. you laugh nervously as your cup has nearly emptied while ayaka checked her watch. "can you text him again? actually, name, can you call him instead? where is he?"

you attempted to dial his number since you had obtained two days ago, but it went straight for voicemail. ayaka sighed,

"you see, i knew it was a trick. should we leave?"

"no, he's coming, i know it."

"then shall we order more food?"

"okay."

the door of the cafe chimed, alerting the cafe employees that there was a new customer coming in. hearing a familiar voice, you turned around, there was scaramouche and the renowned booktoker, kokomi. "sorry that we were late! she couldn't pick an outfit."

the taller woman jabbed scaramouche in the ribs, making him wince in pain. she laughed nervously, fiddling with the ends of her cardigan, "my apologies, it was hard to put tofu in his carrier cage." you nodded in agreement, it's true, tofu does put up a fight. she unlocked the cage as scaramouche scooped the black cat into his arms. although, you did expect him to hand back your cat into your arms, he kept tofu in his lap as he scooted on the booth chairs.

kokomi rolled her eyes as she coughed loudly, "scara, give name back her cat." you noticed scaramouche's shoulders sulked as he scooted out of his booth seat, "of course, i will, kokomi. you think, i would give a ransom to name for her own cat." tofu relaxed in his arms, you think, he has trusted scaramouche, which is cute.

"seems likely for your character." ayaka blurted as she looked away. you chuckled nervously as you tried to defend her. "she means that as a joke. right, ayaka?"

"of course, if i did offend you, i apologize for that." ayaka agreed with you, smiling.

but the smile ayaka gave was clearly fake. this beloved idol of kokomi's doesn't like scaramouche, he can tell. it's the same smile he has seen with his mother. "don't worry, um... miss kamisato, it's a good joke." kokomi replied as scaramouche shot her a dirty look. kokomi shrugged as scaramouche rolled his eyes, tapping your shoulder.

"name, here." scaramouche said, giving you back tofu. although tofu looked like he missed you very much, he jumped immediately back to scaramouche. "huh."

"wow." you looked like you were about to cry. scaramouche attempted to put your cat back on your lap as tofu kept jumping back to him. "excuse us." scaramouche mumbled as he walked a bit to create a distance between him and tofu and the group at the table.

"tofu, if you don't go back to your mom... i mean, name, right now, i won't see you anymore." he saw tofu meow back. "don't disagree with me. im sorry for stealing you from name but seriously go back."

"this is kind of cute." you said out loud as scaramouche and tofu have a talk. or seemingly having a talk as scaramouche's voice gets a bit louder. kokomi giggled,

"he normally talks to tofu more than any of our friends at our apartment complex. sometimes, scaramouche scolds him but it normally goes tofu's way though."

ayaka sighed, "it sounds just like that with tofu and name."

"to be fair, tofu knows how to use his charms. ayaka was a victim of it."

"numerous times."

"that's so silly!" kokomi exclaimed as you watched her realize something. "i mean, i agree tofu's charms are far too strong. the archons knew if he was human, it would be far too much."

ayaka let out a laugh, "true. i believe he-" a phone started to buzz as the three of them attempted to find out who's phone was it. ayaka opened her purse and found her phone. "ah... excuse me." ayaka said, taking her phone to take a call outside. after ten minutes, ayaka explained that she had to go.

it was just you, kokomi, the cute guy and your cat in his arms. kokomi asked the purple haired male, "scaramouche, are you going to give back tofu now?"

scaramouche was still a few feet away from you both, cradling tofu in his arms. "yes... give me a second." scaramouche looked like he was still scolding the cat like how a mother would to her son. eventually, he did come back.

"okay, i think i accidentally gave him seperation anxiety." you let out a laugh, agreeing with scaramouche. "i think so too. hey," you gathered everyone's attention as tofu was placed on the floor, jumping to your side. he nuzzled to your torso. you looked down, "not now, traitor! excuse me, but i have an idea."

scaramouche asked, "what is it?" as kokomi and him were awaiting your idea, you drumrolled, "scaramouche, let's be tofu's parents!"

"what?"

"sorry, i mean, let's share custody."

kokomi gasped, standing up all the sudden, shaking the table a little bit, "what?? of your own cat?"

"yes."

she raised a brow, "that you bought?"

answering a bit faster so you could get to your point, "yes."

"why..."

"because clearly, this little traitor of mine has grown attached to this little thief." you gestured to the indigo eyed man besides you.

"i'm not that short." scaramouche said, pausing before realizing you called him a thief again. "nor a thief."

"yeah right." kokomi agreed with you.

"so... do you agree with me or not?"

"yes, i do."

"alright! i'll draft up a little contract next time we meet." you placed tofu in the carrier by putting a bit of his favorite treat in the carrier. "thank you for giving my cat back. bye!"

"i can't believe that happened." kokomi said, plopping back down in her seat.

"i can't believe that they didn't pay."

02. HES SO FINE

(two weeks when tofus missing)

although you were catless for a while, you found a way to cope: tabby tearoom! the cat cafe is owned by kazuha kaedehara, one of your close friends. he first opened the cafe to cope with the loss of his boyfriend, tomo, who passed away due to a chronic illness. it started blooming in popularity when you visited with your friends; it became a hotspot for fans in hopes to bump into you but especially yoi, lumi and ayaka. 

not that kazuha minds, of course. it’s good for business and sometimes when his other regulars aren’t looking, he would hand you a coupon. 

although tabby tearoom was a way to cope with the loss of tofu. may he come back. well, today, you were wilting like a flower. one of your favorite hostesses noticed, “name, what makes you mourn like a dendrobium?” 

you snapped from your moping mess and looked at her, “oh hey kokomi,” as much as you didn’t want to show kokomi your grief, she had already seen it already. no need to hide it. “y’know how my cat has been missing?” 

kokomi’s indigo eyes widened, “tofu went missing???” you groaned as the pain waves hit you back like a truck. 

“yeah… some shitty ass guy took tofu–” a light bulb lit above your head. “–hey kokomi?” 

“hmm yeah?” 

“when i get the missing posters printed out, can you post some of them in the cafe?”

“to order!” she whipped out a notebook from her pocket, unsheathing her pen from the cap. you laughed, “yes, i am!” 

“i’ll take the usual, dango mew-ilk and the invigorating kitty meal?” 

“oh my orobashi! you really are sad.” kokomi replied, shocked at the mass amount of food you’re eating.

waiting for your food, you caught a glance of a new employee? well, you assume he’s new because you’ve never seen him before. but then again, you only go to the tabby tearoom when the sun’s out. maybe he did the night shifts? 

nevermind that, he's the most gorgeous guy you've ever laid your eyes on. he had a indigo jellyfish haircut with choppy layers and his eyes— his eyes were such a nice shade of indigo as if he was the night sky and you could see stars in his eyes. (hold on, this is so cringe. you snapped out of your trance.) but he looks so familiar, you couldnt put your finger on it. 

as your food came closer, you noticed the person serving it was the gorgeous emo guy you gushed in your head. he said, “your order of usual dango mew-ilk and the invigorating kitty meal?” your dish was in his right hand. 

there’s no way. the guy shared the same characteristics as the guy from the camera footages. the same hair, the same clothing style and the same piercing eyes. why do you manage to like the worst guys ever? you didn't mean to blabber out loud, but you did anyway,

“you’re the one who stole tofu!”
