Well I’ve been praying/fishing for over a week to move Hurricane Dorian out to sea and while the Bahamas sadly took a tragic hit, we now know that the worst of it is continuing to stay off the Florida east coast as it moves north. We are continuing to pray for Dorian to have the least amount of damage and loss of life... that's the goal. But I want to urge you all to Keep the Faith during this weather event or any other kind of "storm" that arises in your life. There will still always be challenges and with these kinds of “life storms” but know that "this too shall pass” as my sweet mom Granny Ruth always says. When you see it coming, statements are of little help. When you’re moving through a life storm, you are nearly numb on listening to the advice of others. Once you’re through it however, you can look back and realize on some level it was necessary and maybe it took you out of a greater harms way or was an unanswered prayer that actually allowed your life to turn out even better than hoped for. Keep the faith! Ok, so... voice back? Check. moving forward with grace and ease? Check. Because this session is for my dog, will I have to act as a surrogate or will I just be on the phone and you work on her as I answer questions, etc.? 2. TGIFriday the 13th and Full moon mayhem

It’s not always what it seems. In many cultures for thousands of years, the number 13 is actually a power number, an omen of good fortune, new beginnings, a renewal and things to look forward to. It’s not always the bad omen, bad luck that “American cinema” has made it out to be. In fact I have a big fat black cat with green eyes named “Tuna” and as I write this he is in my healing chair. Believe me it’s not because he loves me so much, but he is like a weird totem animal that at times exudes healing, grounding and power. Now the full moon often puts the light on what we need to change and or be aware of and it’s statistically a time when the ER and jails can experience overcrowding for real. So always be cautious and expeditious, but move forward with steady progress and grace and ease knowing that things can and will improve. It’s not always what it seems. In many cultures for thousands of years, the number 13 is actually a power number, an omen of good fortune, new beginnings, a renewal and things to look forward to. It’s not always the bad omen, bad luck that “American cinema” has made it out to be. In fact I have a big fat black cat with green eyes named “Tuna” and as I write this he is in my healing chair. Believe me it’s not because he loves me so much, but he is like a weird totem animal that at times exudes healing, grounding and power. Now the full moon often puts the light on what we need to change and or be aware of and it’s statistically a time when the ER and jails can experience overcrowding for real. So always be cautious and expeditious, but move forward with steady progress and grace and ease knowing that things can and will improve. Old Irish Goats: Breed Profile
Breed: Old Irish Goats
Origin: Settlers brought cold weather goats to Ireland in the Neolithic age, approximately 5,000 years ago. This line of goats had slowly adapted, over many generations, to the cold, arid conditions of northern Europe during the slow migration of nomads. As people set up homesteads in Ireland, this hardy and economical breed gradually adjusted, over thousands of years, to Ireland’s landscape and damp climate, and acquired resistance to local diseases. This makes Old Irish goats ideal for families living in harsh conditions with meager land.
History: The Old Irish goat was the only breed until about 1900, providing many products to impoverished households. In the nineteenth century, they numbered a quarter of a million, and many were exported to England. When the potato famine struck, goats proved invaluable, and villages with access to goats and fish were more likely to survive. At the beginning of the twentieth century, improved dairy goat types were imported and cross-bred with local stock to increase milk yields.

Today, in Ireland, most goats have British and Swiss origin. Intensification of production has marginalized Old Irish goats in favor of higher-yielding goat breeds. Despite the fact that they are celebrated in folklore, song and art, there are only a few hundred Old Irish goats left. These are believed to be hidden among feral herds roaming heaths and national parks. Even here, their gene pool has been diluted through cross-breeding with commercial dairy types. When feral populations are controlled, indiscriminate culls further eradicate native animals. Dwindling biodiversity threatens the loss of unique DNA, which allows goats to thrive in cold, harsh and damp conditions, and specifically those of the Irish landscape.

Modern farming methods can inadvertently bring about the kind of conditions that led to the famine, when reliance on a single variety of potato resulted in massive crop failure due to its susceptibility to blight. The Old Irish Goat Society, formed in 2006, recognizes this danger and appeals to volunteers to help them identify genuine Old Irish goats among the feral herds. The society works with the government and heritage associations to gain official protection and rare breed status.
To prove their genetic inheritance, DNA tests were required. Samples from feral and domestic herds were compared to museum samples. Scientists analyzed goat bones and skin that had been preserved from times before improved breed imports. DNA from feral goats in Mulranny revealed descent from historic samples of Irish and Old British breeds, most of which are now extinct, and landrace Scandinavian breeds. Mulranny goat DNA is quite distinct from Mediterranean, Swiss and improved breeds.

The Old Irish Goat Society’s aim is to preserve Old Irish goats in the wild as an existing standard, through collaboration with national parks and landscape management schemes. It also encourages domestication without improvement, as Old Irish goats already make ideal homestead animals, being productive in sparse conditions. The society relies on volunteers and donations from bodies such as the County Mayo Foundation and The American Ireland Fund.
Conservation Status: Near extinction: only a few hundred individuals left. They represent a unique reserve of locally-adapted DNA. According to ecological researcher Rosa García, “Goat genetic heritage is seriously threatened … especially for remote areas which hold an outstanding reservoir of livestock diversity adapted to the local conditions….”
Standard Description: The coat is long, coarse, and oily with an abundant cashmere undercoat. The face is dished, and the body small and deep, with a large rumen to digest poor forage. Legs are short and strong. Distinctly pricked ears are small to resist frostbite, while a long muzzle warms the air before entering the lungs. They normally have horns and beards in both sexes, but no goat wattles. Bucks have long beards and ostentatious tufts on cheeks and forehead, and impressive outward-curving horns. They have slowly adapted these traits in harmony with the local environment. This makes them low-maintenance, hardy, and resilient.

“The Old Irish Goat has a distinct regal image, with its long beard, oversized sideburns, flamboyant coif, long coat, and of course … it is ostentatiously adorned with a crown of impressive horns,” enthuses Seán Carolan, chairman of Mulranny Environmental Group and Old Irish Goat Society.
Coloring: A variety of colors and patterns of gray, black, white, and rich to pale browns.
Temperament: They are described as exceptionally intelligent, charismatic, and gentle. They quickly adapt to domestic settings.
Popular use: Before the twentieth century, rural families kept Old Irish goats for milk, meat, fats, hide, horn and fiber. Now their descendants exist in feral herds, and could be used for conservation grazing and tourism. Their unique genetic makeup embodies a food security resource. They have huge potential as backyard goats, producing nutritious milk of high fat content, due to their economic use of a wide variety of forage.

It isn’t really Old Irish if: there are wattles, large ears, long legs, short hair or other signs of dairy conformation. Other feral populations’ DNA revealed a closer relationship to foreign improved breeds, and demonstrate how any mix of goats left to cross-breed spontaneously in harsh conditions will eventually produce small, hairy descendants, reverting to a wild type like their Bezoar ancestor.

ARTIST INTERVIEW
M: To simplify, I see several different kinds of work, some sculptural and some illustrative. What kind of work do you make?
S: I’ve been looking at it as trying to find a balance between messy and intentional . Originally, charcoal was my go to, and I think I might work back towards it, but for a while I was focused on just filling the space, solidifying color and letting the process be visible in the drawing itself.
I’m kinda concerned about making it apparent that the drawing was made in an emotional state, or channeling certain anxieties and mindsets through uhm, the work itself and so I try to make things alittle violent, or uhm, portray them in a kind of haphazard manner, but I am, uh
-trying to find a more refined approach for it.
M: I see theres an interesting balance between sort of a control and then a very gestural, like expressionistic type of mark-*accidentally knocks drawing on the floor* Oh no!
S: That can just stay on the floor too, like I said, critically panned(laughs).
M: So you said that you mentioned that you try to convey a sense of anxiety in your work. That is a theme that tends to pop up, can you tell me about that and other themes that pop up?
S: Uhm, to me its about uhm, sources of anxiety, and to myself that is sort of about self reflection, uhm to get to the root source of it, but also that everybody should reflect on themselves. And I’ve always sort of struggled with well, I’m not trying to say that this is how everybody should be or that this is what everybody experiences, but more so that these are the codex of what I experience and that everybody has their own.
And so It deals with personal sexuality, underlying urges, identity, but like, referring back to myself specifically. I’ve had it described to me as very Catholic, like they looked at the stuff and asked “Are you Catholic?” and I was like “Well, I was raised Catholic.” And they thought that was very apparent, Uhm, because I am very concerned with the concept of reconciliation, which to me, is based in personal honesty. I-I try to be honest about uhm, things I’m uncomfortable with, uhhh, but then putting them out there in a way that shows that I’m not in support of everything that I believe, its sort of a-uhm, to scrutinize it. So yeah.
M: So I see some external influences, some kind of things you were talking about-
S: I see what you’re doing there.
(laughs)
S: So Darth Vader…(laughs) Darth Vader is a motherfucker but the problem with Darth Vader is that he isn’t entirely evil, he just suffers from low confidence. He is an impotent man stuck in a metal suit, that tried to succeed and now is a lackey. Uhm…And to me is a kind of motif figure that represents toxic masculinity, especially in the way that he tries to incorporate his son to be just like him and is frustrated at the fact that he wont join him. But also to me hes an obvious enough that I feel most people would be ale to contextualize what he represents in the paintings. I’ve been catching a lot of flack for that-
M: For Darth Vader or for using pop culture figures?
S: Well for both. I get accused of being very 1-1 and the students, well certain students like it a lot more but the teachers don’t really.
M: Yeah that’s actually something I’ve noticed, like the teachers are much less fond of that.
S: But that’s definitely my go to figure. I’ve been trying to get away from that alittle bit.
M: You also make sculpture, correct?
S: Yes, yes I do(laughs).
M: (Laughs) were just gonna pretend we didn’t already rehearse this already.
-and are the same kind of themes present and also what are your sculptures like?
S: The sculptural work uhm-the themes are similar but I interpret them in a different way. A lot of my sculptures have to deal with an architectural space, more like a domestic interior space, like I said the last time we spoke, I make a lot of small spaces for people to retreat into, but placed within a very obvious space. Like I said, I made the wall which was pretty much the back of the LAB room I covered with a false wall and built a space inside in which you could disappear or uhm the Cube Cave, which was a six by six by six cube with a tunnel inside which you could burrow into. I also make a lot of figurative sculptures out of metal which I dress up in clothing, give them a sort of pageantry and put them in spaces, domestic spaces. I’m interested in how your development has to do with where you grow up and who you grew up with and how we all sort of think of development in a blanket term and then its not even just like demographics it breaks up into household to household in a cul-de-sac, and some situations are mundane and others are horrific, and you often times really have no way of telling because of personal privacy, there’s never really any intervention. And so that’s uhm, probably where the sculptures lay, and again the critique has been “less figurative, less direct” more uhm,-just more abstraction, all the teachers want more abstraction and I feel like a couple students really don’t want that to happen-
M: Like I was warned about that coming into this school like “yeah It’s a good school but they want every thing to be abstract” and I was like “Oh you.”(laughs)
S: I feel like a lot of the ways were told to resolve drawings or sculptures, you could go on Instagram and find any number of artists doing something similar, like super gestural compositions of forms and movement and they’re sort of a dime a dozen-
M: Yeah, I mean any kind of art is so I don’t necessarily see it like that but I find abstract art as being kind of more valuable than other kinds of art-
S: Yeah, yeah.
M: I’m, sorry I keep looking at that and I keep thinking that super interesting, I mean its so different than everything else.
S: Oh, that’s Carlyn’s.
M: Oh, sorry(laughs).

It’s not always what it seems. In many cultures for thousands of years, the number 13 is actually a power number, an omen of good fortune, new beginnings, a renewal and things to look forward to. It’s not always the bad omen, bad luck that “American cinema” has made it out to be. In fact I have a big fat black cat with green eyes named “Tuna” and as I write this he is in my healing chair. Believe me it’s not because he loves me so much, but he is like a weird totem animal that at times exudes healing, grounding and power. Now the full moon often puts the light on what we need to change and or be aware of and it’s statistically a time when the ER and jails can experience overcrowding for real. So always be cautious and expeditious, but move forward with steady progress and grace and ease knowing that things can and will improve. Well I’ve been praying/fishing for over a week to move Hurricane Dorian out to sea and while the Bahamas sadly took a tragic hit, we now know that the worst of it is continuing to stay off the Florida east coast as it moves north. We are continuing to pray for Dorian to have the least amount of damage and loss of life... that's the goal. Because this session is for my dog, will I have to act as a surrogate or will I just be on the phone and you work on her as I answer questions, etc.? 2.
