despite how tragic and heartbreaking the Captain's death was, at least he died while being comforted by the love of his life, with his hands held by him, almost confessing his love to him and receiving acknowledgement of that love. the Captain died knowing that the man he loved knew about his love. the Captain's last words were the name of the love of his life, and the last thing the Captain heard before dying was his own name coming from the lips of the man he loved. death is all it took for the Captain to finally find love, both from the man he loved in life, and from the family he found in death

Dozens of men in uniform stood around in groups, chatting contentedly about the Allies’ victory. He forced himself forward, never feeling more out of place, straightening his tie absentmindedly. His eyes scanned the room rapidly, searching for the face he’d missed ever since his Lieutenant had left him, more determined than he had ever been before.

And then… there he was."

The Captain returns to Button House, and after some resourceful fraud, finally sets eyes on the man who had refused to leave his mind since he'd left for North Africa years before.

Havers knew. Havers knew everything, no, I mean, he knew. He knew that the Captain loved him, but he could not be completely sure of it, he could not even admit the thought of real reciprocity. When Havers says, what he knew, he means, that all this time while they were together, he had the feeling that butterflies were fluttering around them and time stood still when they looked at each other. That his Captain was really in love with him, that was not some kind of imaginary fantasy, and that Havers did not invent all this to himself. He knew, but he could never be absolutely sure of it
