Paris, France — the proclaimed Ville d'Amour.
To you, it was a time well needed to get away from the stress of reality. The dead-end job, the shitty ex-boyfriend, the dull daily routine of life that was in desperate need of change.
To him, you were just another carefree, albeit gorgeous, tourist who saw things through rose-colored glasses.
And he couldn’t wait to crack them.
The air felt crisp, cold, and clear.
The skies were a effervescent shade of blue, with pillowy clouds scattered about. The hustle and bustle of tourists and residents around you served as a raucous kind of lullaby as you closed your eyes and savored all that this city had to offer - not noticing the photographer who saw you through his lens at a short distance away.
He pretended to be taking photos of the flowers that bloomed behind you, the various colors only enhancing the beauty that was naturally you. He inched ever so closer, just enough to angle his body in a way to capture the peaceful expression on your face within his lens crosshairs.
It was one lone click, followed by the sound of a shutter closing and opening on a camera that had your eyes blinking themselves open. For a second, you saw nothing as your eyesight once again needed time to focus on the light surrounding you instead of the dim darkness that was your eyelids.
When the blurry settled, and the saturation and vibrancy of the scenery around you sharpened, did you fixate your wondering gaze to the male who looked at you, peaking his head slightly above the frame of his camera. A hint of a dimple could be seen, as well as his boxy, closed mouth smile.
“J’adore ton sourire.”
{“I love your smile.”}
The once serene look on your face turned to one of shyness, your smile still present - bigger, but demeanor shrinking in on itself. You had no clue what he spoke, but the gentle way his eyes shined at you had your body yearning for more from the mystery male. He adored the way your cheeks let off a cherry hue, and could only daydream how they would look along with your skin as your body writhed with pleasure underneath him. Or, if he had a choice, above him.
Only one way to find out.
“Je peux vous offrir un verre?”
{“Can I buy you a drink?”}
You said the one word you knew in French, having memorized quite a few social phrases before coming, so you knew what he asked. Though forward, you welcomed the thrill — the adventure — as a foreigner.
“Oui.”
{“Yes.”}

Monday
You threw your head back in laughter as he dipped your now bent over figure gracefully, your arm secured around his neck and his at the curve of your back. When he pulled you back in, your chest was flush against his. In your liquor induced haze, you missed the way his eyes flashed with a hidden glint to them, the seemingly permanent smile on his face never faltering.
“I thought you said you were a bad dancer?” He eyed you dubiously, and you let out a snort of laughter, hand raising to cover your nostrils and mouth with wide eyes.
He let out a boisterous laugh and gently tugged your hand away from your face, the glint gone, but replaced with a now playful and mischievous air. You opted to fan your face instead, the humidity of the small pub and humility of your rather unladylike action taking a toll on your emotions and body respectively.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding.”
His deep, baritone, voice filled your mind as he encompassed you into a tight hug, his mouth outlining the shell of your ear. This dude loved touching in any way, shape, or form. You chalked it up to his lineage, his facial features resembled that of Asian descent and yet his personality and mannerisms screamed French. To you, it was a dangerous duo, but you couldn’t get enough.
When he told you that he spoke three different languages, including yours, your eyes nearly bulged out of your head. You couldn’t even begin to fathom how one could know so many, but the prospect of him teaching you a different language filled you with excitement, a promise he said he would own up to when you agreed to see each other again after today.
“We should call it a night, yeah?”
Your legs felt like noodles, your head was fuzzy, and images were slightly blurred. It wasn’t until you leaned your full body weight against him, did you come to the realization that you were beyond tired and still jet lagged. His hands stabilized your wobbly figure with a firm grip on your waist.
Blowing out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, you replied.
“Yeah–I should head back to my hotel.”
“Would you like me to get you a cab?”
“Please.”
His hand hovered on the small of your back as you slowly made your way to the front of the club. The immediate relief you felt as you stepped onto the sidewalk had you tilting your head up to the now night sky, a multitude of stars twinkling alongside the crescent moon.
A drunken night goer collided into you, sending your already unstable self backwards into the awaiting arms of your savior. His arms encased your torso with a vice grip, his own heels digging into the cracked concrete in order to be sure that he didn’t go falling himself. He threw a curse word that went unheard at the inebriated back of the mystery person – and even though you knew it was a bad word, the way it sounded in French as he shouted it over your head had your body warming with a mix of emotions.
Majority of you was entirely grateful for his presence, a good chunk of you was beyond happy with the generous amount of time you were able to spend with him where he showed you both popular and hole in the wall attractions. He essentially played the part of your personal tour guide with how rich with knowledge he was of the history of Paris.
You really lucked out.
“Thank you.”
He was still mumbling curse words under his breath, staring daggers into the direction he watched the night stroller head in until he was gone. It was your own barely audible mumble of gratitude that had him awkwardly maneuvering his face at a weird angle to see the front of yours. His brows pulled together in confusion.
“Why are you thanking me?”
“For–,” you struggled to come up with words, the list of many things you were thankful for being long in itself that you opted for the shorter and simpler route. “–everything?”
It ended up coming out as more of a question at the end than a confident declaration, and it had you inwardly cringing with just how out of touch you were with flirting since your ex walked out of your life.
“You’re wel–,” his head perked up as he fixated at something over your shoulder. Before you could utter another syllable, he put two fingers in his mouth and blew a sharp whistle followed by waving the same hand animatedly back and forth.
The squealing of tires is all you heard before a yellow taxi cab slowed to a stop in front of you two. Keeping an arm around your waistline, he stepped one foot off the sidewalk to open the car door for you. With a gentle smile and push at your lower back, you stepped off the sidewalk yourself. His hand then grabbed yours to stabilize your movements so you could swiftly, and ungracefully, plop your butt onto the clothed back seat.
Making sure you were fully inside, he then carefully shut the door for you. You clumsily went to roll down the window and he chuckled in amusement at your hasty movement. Once it was halfway down, did you poke your head out of the window to ask him a question.
“Kim Taehyung.”
Your brows rose and your mouth was left open in an ‘o’ shape as you watched his mouth form the words as if in slow motion. How did he know?
“Y—,” again, you were cut off by his psychic abilities.
“My number is on the napkin I slipped inside your coat pocket. Call me when you wake up and I can give you a more in depth tour of the sights.”
His boxy smile, accompanied by the confident yet suave wink he sent your way as the driver pulled away from the curb had your heart racing in anticipation of the day to come. A smile of your own lit up your face, making his own become broader. The same smile turning into one of confusion as a slender, manicured hand slid its way around his shoulders and a mystery woman kissed his cheek.
He missed the way your face dropped into one of morose when he pivoted on his heel to greet the woman with a kiss on each of her cheeks. You pulled your head back into the cab, his attention on you long gone as you sulked in that taxi cab the rest of the way to the hotel. The only comfort you had was the lightweight napkin that you fished out of your coat pocket, and – true to his words – had his number written down on it with a ‘call me’ elegantly written in red ink.
It was the French thing to do, you rationalized. They could just be friends. He seemed surprised to see her, therefore he had no idea she would be there. Yeah, you thought with a sullen nod, it was a spontaneous meeting. That must be it.
Another lingering thought crossed your mind as you reread the scrawl.
He didn’t even know your name.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Tuesday
“Y/N Y/L/N”.
The flat of his tongue was licking the side of the waffle cone that housed his now dripping ice cream as he hummed in acknowledgement. You could feel a drip of your own strawberry ice cream land on your thumb and you made quick work in licking it away as well.
“Beau prénom comme toi.”
“Something–,” you wracked your brain over the common words he’s already taught you. “Beautiful?”
He nodded, smiling at you encouragingly, and gestured at you with his ice cream to continue. Nibbling on the waffle cone, you tested the thoughts in your head out loud.
“Beautiful name?”
His body rose in front of your seated position on the large fountain you were both resting at as he began clapping for you loudly and exuberantly. In the process he ended up with his remaining ice cream on the floor. You grinned at him shyly, mockingly bowing in turn. A few giggles escaped your lips at the fallen frozen treat.
“Like you.”
He sat back down next to you as he said this. It was with such confidence that you wondered if he uses the same tactics with other foreign girls only in town for a week – or, and you highly doubted this – if you were considered special. You’d like to think the latter, but your gut told you it wasn’t true.
A finger poked the crease lines that began forming on your forehead in between your eyes. Attempting to look at the invading digit, had your eyes crossing comically in a way that had Taehyung leaning into your face with a coy smile.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
Swatting the finger away, you rolled your eyes at him. His mouth began to open, and you had no doubt that he was about to spew some other flirtatious comment your way. Deciding your poor, little, hopeless romantic heart couldn’t take anymore feigned interest, you shove the remainder of your own ice cream into his mouth. His eyes grew wide, as he opened his mouth more to accommodate the sugary, strawberry goodness with a surprised grunt.
He brought up a hand to clamp around the waffle cone, eating half of it in one bite that would’ve taken you a good minute to finish yourself. Swallowing, he gave you a smirk with narrowed eyes.
“Do you know that we just indirectly kissed?”
“You’re insufferable, do you know that?”
All he did was laugh in glee at your flustered face.

Wednesday
You both began sprinting for the nearest awning cover you two could find, the cold and relentless rain having no qualms with drenching your shivering forms otherwise. The rain caused several curls to appear that plastered to Taehyung’s forehead and it made him look even more irresistible than he already was. But you? You probably looked more like a drowned raccoon, positive that your eyeliner and mascara were smeared when you made the mistake of wiping water from your eyes.
“Who was that woman?”
You hoped you came off as more nonchalant and curious, rather than accusatory. Though, now, you figured – was as good a time as any to ask the loaded question that will either quench your doubts or fuel them. It didn’t look like the rain was going to let up anytime soon, and conversation was the perfect distraction.
His eyes looked at you, but his body stayed forward. You mimicked his pose, doing your best not be stiff as you waited for his response. His lip quirked up, but he repressed the smirk that wanted to show. He was selfishly wondering when you would bring it up or if you even witnessed the planned exhange. Not that you needed to know that part.
“A friend that’s also in town for the week.”
You resisted the urge to eye roll. Friend could’ve meant anything and gave you nothing in terms of feeling assured you had no current competition of your male companion’s company for the remainder of the week.
He looked down at his watch with pinched brows, and what seemed to be actual concern on his face. He sucked his lip between his teeth and made a sound of disappointment. This made you turn towards him with your own worry lines adorning your face.
“What’s wrong?”
“I was actually supposed to meet her not too long after our stroll ended, but this weather is going to make me have to postpone our date.”
It’s a good thing his attention was still focused heavily on his watch, the resound sigh escaping his lips shortly after his wounding ending statement – so he was able to miss the hurt that crossed your features at his words, it having been hidden by once again returning to your fixed position, your hair securely shielding your face from him.
“I’m sorry our stroll ended up causing you to miss your date.”
A loud crack of perfectly timed thunder was able to conceal the forceful tone you used in reiterating the dreaded ‘date’ word, leaving him none the wiser to your inner turmoil. Or, so you believed.
He coughed into his hand to cover up the smile that wanted to form. It was always the same with Americans, they get jealous so easily. If only you knew that the date wasn’t really a date and it was with his guy friend and not the woman you saw previously — but, again — you didn’t need to know that. This was far more amusing to him, though it only confirmed his suspicions more on you taking a liking to him.
Good. Very good. The week was halfway done already and you two have yet to share a kiss, let alone get anywhere close to his end goal with you, but it was all apart of his plan.
And his plans never fail.

Thursday
You could not believe what your eyes were seeing.
Taehyung stood off to the side, not too far from you, but enough room to give you your own space as your eyes took in the sight of what was in front of you. Him having seen it countless times, he just tilts his head in order to get a better view of the awestruck expression on your face rather than the infamous painting.
The Mona Lisa.
Unbeknownst to him, a small smile erupts on his face while watching you, a common occurrence he’s been catching himself doing lately. Along with it, always came the damning butterflies that he didn’t know what to do with. Normally, he would only have a one track mind that hindered such thoughts, but alas – not when it came to you.
With you, he’s actually rejected other female’s company. Not an ounce of regret could be felt when doing so and he wondered when your supposed friendship might’ve crossed the line to something more. Something deeper. If he didn’t live in this city for so long he would’ve hashed it up to the romantic aura that seemed to come with it as the perpetrator of his sudden affections for you.
What kind of black magic have you cast on him?
“–ello?”
He blinked out of his stupor to come face to face with your amused one. Your head was tilted, but the smirk on your face let him know that you had an inkling on what he was thinking of, if not for the way he was zoning out on you specifically held any hints.
You weren’t used to it. All the attention, all the touches, all the minuscule glances he would send your way thinking you had no clue – but you did.
And you had no clue what to do about it.
Or, rather, you did know what you wanted to do.
It was just a matter of how you could accomplish it.
You cautiously touched your fingers with his as you two walked to the next framed piece of artwork, and not too long after did you feel his own slide between yours and encase your small hand in his.
This was a start. But you only had one more night left in this city and it was time to make the most of it.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Friday
Much like your first day here in Paris, you had the warmth of sun above the sky to caress your face, eyes squinting as you tried to zero in on the tip of the Eiffel Tower that stood tall in front of your minuscule, ant like body to those who looked down on you from the structure. Though, you know it wouldn’t last for long, the orange and purple hues were just on the horizon to signal the start of the evening.
His arm brushes up against yours as he stands next to you, mimicking your current position.
“Beautiful, is it not?”
“It truly is a sight to see. I can’t believe I’m looking at it in person.”
“Would you like to go to the top?”
You switch your focus to his, eyes widening in disbelief.
“Could we?”
His signature boxy smile appears.
“Let’s go.”
Due to modern technology of an elevator, it doesn’t take long for you both to make it to your destination in minutes. You step out and are instantly in awe at the dazzling sight before you that is Paris at night. The lights flicker sporadically, shadows in the form of cars and shapes of people filter through them continuously. It’s hard to believe you’re here right now. So much so, in fact, you need to ground yourself somehow.
Your hand flails at your side, looking for some sort of proof that you’re not dreaming and this is just an insanely vivid fever dream. A hand secures your wandering one in a firm, yet gentle grip. Slender fingers interlocking with yours has your heart in a frenzy. It just works to make the moment all the more surreal.
You can hear Taehyung let out a low chuckle.
“All you American’s seem to share the same reaction, you know? It’s cute.”
He might as well have been talking to a wall, that’s how much you were still enamored with the man made beauty around you. It’s true, if you were to take a gander at all the tourists around you, you would find the same wide eyed, dazed look.
The only difference between them and you was, well, him. Finally breaking yourself out of your stupor, your eyes shift to his that are already staring at you. You can feel the tension that’s slowly starting to build the longer you two stare. It’s exciting, it’s thrilling, it’s everything you were hoping for on this whirlwind of a trip.
Taehyung noticed the way your eyes seemed to somehow become even more dazed as you gazed at him, which is how he knew the moment had arrived.
It was time.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Teeth clashed against teeth, tongues battled for dominance, clothes were strewn randomly on the floor as soon as you stepped foot into your hotel room. The curtains were only half drawn, letting the dark room be naturally illuminated by the moon’s beams that cast an almost magical glow onto the white bedding of your bed.
Said bedding just gets kicked off in the lust fueled dance of bodies, knowing the material would only hinder certain movements and cause more sweat to transpire as the night goes on.
Before you know it, he’s hovering over you, hair dangling in front of your face that semi shields his blown pupils as he locks eyes with yours, a question lingering in them. Your bare foot slides down his toned butt cheeks before your heel digs into the supple flesh of one cheek to bring his lower body closer to yours.
The one push alone causes the head of his bulbous, condom wrapped, throbbing member to bump into the hood of your clit as it slides up and down your wet folds with ease. The sensation causes a sharp inhale from you, that only gets let out when he pulls a throaty moan from your lips, inserting only the tip into your core. His forehead drops into the naval of your breasts as he watches his cock slip further into you, your own legs spreading to accommodate him more. If it wasn’t for the shaggy hair that blocked your view, you know you would be doing the same.
“Dieu, tu es si mouillé.”
{God, you’re so wet.}
“I have no idea what you just said, but fuck–,” he pulls out all the way, only to snap his hips against yours to sheath himself again. “–keep talking.”
There’s a mixture of what sounds like a grunt and laughter as he kisses the valley between your breasts. He complies, both the accent and the words you presume to be dirty, only spurs on the tight coil in your stomach that’s begging for release.
You let out a broken whimper, your back arching off the bed that Taehyung uses to his own advantage, securing one toned arm around your back to hold you up and switch positions. His back is now against the headboard as you straddle his waist, your hands gripping his shoulders and nails digging into the flesh as your body wracks with your first orgasm of the night.
His heels dig into the mattress to get a better angle as he pistons in and out of your dripping hole, his hot tongue latching onto one of your nipples that he accidentally bites when his own orgasm takes hold. Your immediate reaction is to grip his hair and yank his head back and off your nipple, but what you come to find has you parting your lips in a silent ‘o’.
Taehyung’s eyes are closed, face scrunched with both pain and pleasure, the action making him let out a gutteral, near animalistic moan. The lewd sight makes you feel powerful. His eyes are still closed when you decide to swivel your hips against his, making figure eights. Your pace is fast, one hand keeping a vice in his hair, the tips of your nails digging into his head, while your other hand clutches onto the top of the headboard for support.
Much too quick for his liking, his eyes burst open, his mouth mimicking yours with a silent moan, but you can feel his entire body tense as you work his second orgasm out of him. His eyes are pooling with unshed tears that pulls at your heartstrings, and you slow your brutal pace to a more sensual one as he rides out his orgasm. His body eventually relaxes, sagging back into the headboard.
Finally releasing the death grip on his hair, your own body comes to a full stop as you lean back against your hands on the bed to give yourself your own little break from the workout you just had.
“Comment es-tu réel?”
{How are you real?”}
He chuckled mirthlessly, head falling back to join his body in exhaustion, but his eyes are still locked with yours. All you do is smirk sinfully at him, not knowing at all what he just said, but having a feeling it has to do with your stellar performance.
His hands roam over your stomach, the tips of one hand hovering dangerously close to your exposed clit from the position your in. He sees when your lower body tightens, your hole fluttering around nothing. His now semi hard member slipped out for the most part when you chose to sit your butt back on the mattress between his legs instead, though due to his impressive length, the tip still stayed in.
Two fingers gently pry your folds open, your essence still dribbles from the prior stimulation down his cock that coats his fingers in seconds when he shifts to inserting two fingers up to the knuckle above his shaft, slowly scissoring you open and stretching you. Your head falls back against your shoulders, and you do your damndest not to close your legs out of sheer instinct to lock the fingers inside your pussy greedily.
You’ve never felt this full before, it was almost overwhelming. A quiet sob escapes your lips, that has you slapping a hand over your mouth. Your lower body shakes, as you refrain from moving against him, knowing your body is still tired and wouldn’t be able to handle the strenuous activity again. But god, did you want to cum so badly.
Please. Please. Please. Please.
“I got you, baby. I got you.”
You don’t realize that the mantra you thought was in your head, was actually being spoken out loud, mumbled behind your hand. Though, you can’t find it in yourself to care at the moment. Your only focus being on finding your own pleasure.
He brings his other hand up to rub lazy, but pressured circles on your engorged clit. Your body twitches at the sudden onslaught, and to further your building pleasure, Taehyung begins to minisculely move his hips in short movements.
Your legs begin to shake as the pressure once again builds, the coil tightening in you to the point of bursting at any second, yet you wanted to scream at the fact your orgasm was teetering on the edge of occurring, but not.
You hated being a girl sometimes, having to deal with the agony of your own body denying you an orgasm right away.
Taehyung began to grunt, his cock now fully hard, though he paid no mind, his only goal being to coax you to your high. His brows were scrunched, teeth digging into his bottom lip, sweaty curls plastered around his flushed face and neck. His hand was cramping, his legs were cramping, his arm was cramping, but he fought through it.
Sharp pants began to take hold of you, your chest heaving in a rhythmic pattern. The hand that was once over your mouth, now joins your other hand in clutching the bed sheets in a death grip and you stare up at the ceiling with watery eyes, a determined look on your face.
Throwing all caution to the wind, you finally begin swiveling your hips in time with his hand movements – the lewd, wet, squelching that resounded throughout the room surprisingly only doing the bare minimum amount in helping you.
There’s one factor you noticed that stopped.
Taehyung’s French. You needed to hear it.
“French.”
You grind out, eyes still honed in on the celiling. He lets out a grunt of confusion, not expecting you to talk, so your words fall on deaf ears. It nearly makes you growl when you say it again.
“French. Now.”
“Jouis pour moi. laissez-moi vous voir se dérouler. Christ. Tu es tellement belle putain.”
{Enjoy for me. Let me see you unfold. Christ. You are so fucking beautiful.”}
His voice is laced with a whiny undertone, and as if by magic, your orgasm explodes from within you. You sob in relief as your body falls backwards onto the bed, he chases your bodies movement to hover over you once again. He secures one arm around each of your legs as he lifts your butt off the bed to get a deeper angle to plow into your now dripping pussy at a break neck pace. Skin slapping against skin reverberates throughout the room.
“Holy fuck. Oh my god. Taehyung, please.”
Your hands are trying to push him off of you, the overstimulation making you see stars. Thankfully, it’s only mere seconds later that he collapses off to the side of you, his own chest heaving along with yours as you both now stare at the ceiling above you. Shadows flicker around the room from cars that pass by, the mumbled sound of cars honking and passing conversation being the only background noise to fill the silence.
“That was–,” his voice is raspy, laced with both exhaustion and the need to just close his eyes and sleep.
“Oui.” Your reply is met with a breathless chuckle, one you join in with soft laughter of your own.
He throws an arm around your waist, laying his head sideways between your breasts and then sighs in content. You mindlessly begin carting your fingers through his sweaty curls, and it’s not long before you hear soft snores coming from the male. Eventually, as you watch the shadows dance around the ceiling, do your own eyes get heavy, and you drift off into dreamland, a smile on your face.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
When you wake up, he’s gone.
A note, scrawled in elegant cursive lays on the pillow next to your head. A single rose accompanies it.
‘Jusqu'à ce que nous nous revoyions, mon amour.’
{Till we meet again, my love.”}
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
You wouldn’t see him again for another two years, and by then, you’re no longer the same naive tourist you once were.
When the blurry settled, and the saturation and vibrancy of the scenery around you sharpened, did you fixate your strong gaze to the male who looked at you, peaking his head slightly above the frame of his camera. A hint of a dimple could be seen, as well as his boxy, closed mouth smile.
“J’adore ton sourire.”
{“I love your smile.”}
The once serene look on your face turned to one of knowing, your smile still present - bigger, but demeanor becoming more poised. You knew exactly what he said, the mischievous way his eyes shined at you had your body yearning for more from the familiar male. He adored the way your cheeks let off a cherry hue, and couldn’t wait to see you writhe with pleasure underneath him again. Or, if he had a choice, above him.
“Je peux vous offrir un verre?”
{“Can I buy you a drink?”}
You recited the popular phrase you knew in French, having become more fluent in the love language since you last saw him, so you knew what to ask. Though forward, he welcomed the thrill — the adventure, the passion — as a once fellow foreigner did in a time past with open arms and mind.
“Oui.”
{“Yes.”}

anniversary (crying version) - jjk
pairing: jeongguk x reader
genre/warnings: youtuber!au, fluff, the world’s most sickening couple is back except it’s on their anniversary, idk if i’ve ever mentioned this but ot7 are all youtubers in this universe (except for namjoon, he’s just seokjin’s roommate but that’s not important right now jfaksld)
word count: 1,529
summary: you want to surprise jeongguk for your three year anniversary or you give jimin the password to jeongguk’s youtube account (not clickbait)
a/n: yes this is shamelessly inspired by the festa euphoria piano version video and yes, you should listen to it while you read this
“Hey, did you grab your phone after you paid?”
There was a split second moment of panic in the round of Jeongguk’s eyes, puffing out like a frog where the suction of his lips were still attached to the wide straw of his boba. He stalled, mid stride, free hand smacking the pocket of his jeans. When his palm collided with the hard surface tucked securely in tight denim, he relaxed but frowned at you. An adorable pout, cheeks filling with air, nostrils flaring, lips reluctantly pulling away from his tea to scrunch at you.
“Why would you scare me like that?” Jeongguk whined.
You patted his stomach, “Just making sure. Wouldn’t want to lose that.”
He took your hand, pinning your fingers with the thread of his before he said, “Why? All your good nudes are on my camera—”
You smacked him with your free hand anyway, cheeks warming aside from the midday sun encompassing the park sidewalks, and you quipped, “What’s the return policy on boyfriends? It’s been three years now, can I still get at least a small refund?”
“Hey,” Jeongguk turned the attention of his pout to you just to see you falter because he knew you would, “You can’t be mean to me on our anniversary.”
“I’m not mean to you anyway.”
“I know you’re not,” He nearly toppled over you to peck your cheek. “You’re the bestest, most beautiful—”
“Okay, calm down lover boy,” You used the disadvantaged lean of his stature to direct him to your pleasing, “Let’s sit down over here for a second.”
You checked your watch once Jeongguk had settled enough to become preoccupied with swirling his straw around the tiny balls at the bottom of his drink, heart lodging in your throat as you watched the hands click over.
“Hey,” You nudged him by leaning into him, cheek against the inside of his bicep to peer up at him, “Check your phone for me.”
“What’s the obsession with my phone?” He continued to jam the straw into the black substance, swirling them against the transparent plastic, “...did you send me something that’s meant for my eyes only or—”
“What’s your obsession with seeing me naked?”
“You know the answer to that question.”
“Jeongguk,” He giggled when you snatched his drink out of his grasp, settling it onto the pebble coated concrete below your feet, “Check your phone.”
He sighed, arching to fish the device from his pocket before leaning forward, elbows on his thighs, as you attached yourself to his arm. You watched the side of his face instead of the screen as his thumb hesitated, hovering over a dimmed notification.
“My upload was successful?” Dark eyebrows scrunched and his chin tilted just a fraction, “What upload? I didn’t schedule anything—”
You nosed into the sleeve of Jeongguk’s shirt, silent as he surfed to his account, him equally as silent as he tapped on the “successful upload”, a blurry thumbnail preselected by the platform because that wasn’t the focus of the video anyway.
A fade of black into the first shot was all you watched before you pressed your features fully into his arm, holding onto the apex of his elbow a bit tighter as your own voice, distorted audio from the phone speakers but your voice nonetheless, floated to your ears.
“Hey baby…” It was a clip you’d taken that night, morning in theory but too soon after the clock had clicked past midnight to truly be considered morning. His head on your chest, lips parted and drooling against your sleep shirt, your free hand in the fluff of his shower fresh hair while the other tried to maintain a semi decent angle without waking him, “Happy anniversary.”
The song that began to play was one of his, self produced solely for the purpose of his intro and outro but the wordlessly melody extended into something beautiful, something to slap over any and all vlogs he made dedicated to you. One he serenaded you to in the mornings when his mouth was still full of toothpaste or whispered into your hair when the fatigue of everything made it hard to sleep.
It was different this time, though, tweaked at the request of your nonmusical knowledge but fixed by the talented hands of Yoongi, softened and backtracked with a piano you’d watched the commentary-Youtuber play himself while you roughed eager hands over his shoulders and high fived him with two hands afterwards (It’s perfect, thank you!), then taken to Jimin to add to the never-ending list of clips you’d emailed him, once you just wanted placed into a montage, nothing too fancy. But Jimin made it fancy, pouring the love you didn’t know how to say nor edit into the collage of memories, promising not to do anything stupid with his newfound ability to hack into Jeongguk’s Youtube account by means of your quick handwriting on a pink sticky note.
The memories started as early as you had felt confident enough to film him as much as he filmed you, quite literally a clip of him fiddling with his camera while you draped yourself over his shoulder, zooming in on the freckle underneath the smile on his lips while he murmured are you me now? to as late as the week before your anniversary when you’d caught him researching human sized flower bouquets in his office. Capturing the moments in between all of his life that was plastered on the Internet, like seeing himself through a mirror but instead with glasses on that zeroed in on your perspective, the love and affection he was aware of but often blind to the full magnitude.
He filmed things because he wasn’t good with words. You filmed things to reinforce your words, reassure him of your words.
You watched the last clip fade away with the music, the audio of the original clip left in this time, one from your last vacation where he’d given you a tiny diamond ring on the beach (This isn’t what you think. Okay maybe it is. It’s a promise. Do they call it a promise ring?) and you’d cried about how cheesy he was, eyes still a little puffy when you turned your phone camera on but it didn’t matter because he was still rambling to the painted canvas sky about how much he loved you when you squished his cheeks between your thumb and four fingers, ring not quite fully on your finger but prominent nonetheless, puffing out his lips enough to plant a firm kiss on them.
“I love you too, idiot.”
The screen was black long enough for the autoplay feature to slip into his video from the previous week, his own screeching voice bringing him back to reality as he exited the application, locking his phone to set it gently aside on the bench.
“How did you…”
“Yoongi mixed the song for me. Jimin helped me edit and upload,” You watched as he continued to stare at the sidewalk, eyes opening all the way and then scrunching shut.
“So you mean Jimin has my password?”
“He promised he wouldn’t do anything. I’ve been working on this for weeks, he would have already deleted that one prank video where you shaved a stripe into the back of his head and—”
Your surroundings whirled, voice cut off with an abrupt hmph! as you were crushed in a pair of strong arms, turned and twisted until you were straddling his lap.
“I’m kidding. Oh my god, I was just kidding,” Jeongguk’s nose dug into the crook of your neck, fists scrunched at the back of your shirt, “He can delete my entire channel. I couldn't care any less at the moment. I love you so much. I love you so fucking much—”
You cooed when he collected your face in his hands, holding you at the tear of his gaze until the streams bubbling over his bright eyes contoured a line down the slope of his nose. He laughed when your thumb brushed into his skin, collecting the droplets where they framed red at the crinkles in his smile, brushing until it did no good and you decided to kiss him instead.
“Thank you. It’s perfect—” Jeongguk stuttered into the seam of your lips that tasted of salt and peach, “—you’re perfect. You are. It’s ridiculous. I can’t believe you’re mine. How did I—”
“Shh.”
He flushed under your affections, seven shades of shy pink when you kissed his cheek then moved for the other. “This is why I stick to videos,” He told you when you kissed his eyelid, peering up at you with a scrunched nose that you kissed too.
“And you’re damn good at it.”
Some more squeaks and attempts at rambling his affections for you subsided like the leak of tears into your collar. “M’gonna hold you forever,” He decided finally, tightening his grip in the same moment that you tried to clamber off him.
“Only if I can love you forever.”
Silence and then Jeongguk huffed against the dip in your collarbone.
“Ew. Maybe we should both stick to videos…”

The Pros
Classy design; Awesome keyboard; Solid battery life; Vivid privacy display; Quality audio
The Cons
Blurry webcam; Display on base model is mediocre
Verdict
The EliteBook 840 G5 is an absolute beauty of a business laptop, providing a comfy keyboard, strong performance and amazing sound in a stylish design.
Let HP swoop you off your feet with a powerful and luxurious business notebook that embraces productivity and security just as much as it does its multimedia capabilities. The 14-inch EliteBook 840 G5 ($1,182 starting; $2,295 as reviewed) delivers solid performance with its 8th-Gen Intel Core processor and a comfortable keyboard to speed up your workflow. The Bang & Olufsen speakers will make you feel like you’re at a concert, and the bright privacy display will immerse you in your own private theater. The EliteBook trips up only in its webcam and its base model display.
Design
With the EliteBook 840, you can work in style. The full aluminum exterior presents a minimalist silver finish accompanied by HP’s stylish slash logo. There’s a lightly engraved EliteBook logo on the hinge, and toward the top of the lid is a gray line dividing the lip of the laptop. I love that the hinge is at an angle, giving the notebook some flair compared to the plain, rectangular chassis of many other business laptops. The design is quite neat and simple.
As the laptop opens, you see a classy, backlit, island-style keyboard with a pointing stick. There’s a sleek power button in the top left corner, and above that is an elegant, triangle-pattern lid for the Bang & Olufsen speakers. The display’s chin is a little thick, but it’s proportioned well with the slim bezels to make it look seductive.
The EliteBook 840 features several ports for business use. The left side features a secure lock slot, one USB 3.0 with always-on charging and a Smart Card Reader. On the right, you’ll find one USB Type-C port with Thunderbolt, an HP UltraSlim dock connector, an RJ45 port, an HDMI port, one USB 3.0 port, a combo headphone/microphone jack and a WWAN SIM card reader.
At 3.4 pounds and 12.8 x 9.2 x 0.7 inches, the EliteBook 840 is slightly bigger than most of its competition. It matches the Dell Latitude 7490‘s 0.7-inch thickness but just beats that machine’s weight of 3.5 pounds. The Huawei MateBook X Pro is lighter and thinner than the HP machine, at 3.5 pounds and 0.6 inches, and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Gen) wins all the marbles, at 2.5 pounds and 0.6 inches.
Security and Durability
Need something to survive your next work trip? Easy. The EliteBook 840 has gone through MIL-STD-810G certification, which means it can endure extreme humidity, extreme temperatures, vibration and high altitude.
For some extra cash, you can choose from multiple configurations that increase the security of this laptop. There’s the Sure View privacy screen, which protects the information on your display with a bright light that’s visible to anyone that isn’t directly in front of the laptop. This is activated by a simple click on one of the function keys. Our configuration (Intel Core i7-8650U) comes with Intel vPro for remote management as well as an IR camera to access Windows Hello.
One thing that you’ll notice right away is HP’s Privacy Camera, which contains a slider that physically blocks the webcam’s lens. Additionally, there’s a subtle fingerprint reader underneath the rightmost arrow key. HP’s Sure Recover feature can reimage your PC even if the hard drive gets wiped. HP also built in an Endpoint Security Controller, which is a physical chip that powers the company’s Sure Start software, a self-healing BIOS. BIOS is the first software run by all IBM-compatible PCs when turned on.
Display
The 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 IPS LED display on the EliteBook 840 base model was lackluster and too dim to enjoy. As I watched the most recent trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, the display spoiled the lighting in every scene with a blue tint. Watching Henry Cavill and his Superman muscles march across a bathroom to beat someone to death was designed to be an intense and joyful experience. Instead, it felt trivial as the bathroom lights faded out the color in the characters’ clothes and faces. Superman’s magnificent bod and mustache meant nothing to me.
On the other hand, the config with the 1920 x 1080 integrated privacy screen produced bright and vibrant images. I was mesmerized as Tom Cruise fumbled with his seat belt and had a confused, then panicked expression as a military helicopter tumbled down a bright, snowy mountaintop toward him. From the sunset shading Cruise’s complexion to the different hues in the blue sky, the colors were dynamic.
MORE: Laptops with the Best Display Brightness
According to our colorimeter, the base display covers a measly 70 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which pales in comparison to the 114 percent category average. However, the privacy display hit a very good 119 percent.
The base display produced a dim 217 nits of brightness, crashing below the 305-nit category average. The HP’s privacy display, however, annihilated the competition, with a whopping 619 nits. This surpasses even the result from the HDR-ready ThinkPad X1 Carbon (469 nits), as well as our 293-nit standard. The MateBook X averaged 458 nits, and the Latitude 7490 missed the average with 277 nits.
Keyboard, Touchpad and Pointing Stick
The EliteBook 840’s backlit keyboard is tight; it sharply sinks into the chassis, and the keys feel substantial and clicky while you’re typing. The backlighting has only two settings, which is disappointing for a laptop of this price. For business users, however, HP included three useful keys to present, answer and hang up calls via Skype.
The keys have somewhat short travel (1.4 millimeters) but require strong actuation force (77 grams). We usually look for travel between 1.5 and 2 mm and actuation force above 60 grams. The keyboard is incredibly comfortable, allowing me to sail past my 60-words-per-minute average with 68 wpm on the 10fastfingers typing test.
For pointing stick users, the nub has plenty of room to work with, cutting a decent chuck off the G, H and B keys. There are two discrete mouse buttons for it at the top of the touchpad, but unlike the Latitude 7490 and ThinkPad X1, this HP doesn’t have a scroll button.
The keyboard is incredibly comfortable, allowing me to sail past my 60-words-per-minute average.
The 4.2 x 2.3 touchpad is smooth and responsive, with a decent pair of clickers. It captures all of the key Windows 10 gestures, from two-finger window scrolling to three-finger task swiping.
Audio
The EliteBook’s Bang & Olufsen speakers are a blessing to my ears. While listening to “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots, I heard every single entracing beat from the percussion to the keyboard as they creatively intertwined with Tyler Joseph’s vocals. These echoed loud enough to fill a medium-size conference room.
While listening to ‘Stressed Out’ by Twenty One Pilots, I heard every single entracing beat from the percussion to the keyboard as they creatively intertwined with Tyler Joseph’s vocals.
The balance of bass and treble allows each instrument to shine, creating a surprisingly intense experience. Bang & Olufsen provides its own equalizer app, so you can customize the sound to your specific needs. Options are tailored for voice, movies or music, but if that doesn’t satisfy, you can perform a full manual equalizer setup.
Performance
Why you would need 30 Google Chrome tabs playing the same 1080p SNL skit all at once is beyond me. But with the EliteBook 840, you can do it all without a hint of lag. Our config is loaded with a quad-core Intel Core i7-8650U processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD and an Intel UHD Graphics 620, which allowed the notebook to perform this multitasking with ease.
On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the EliteBook 840 scored an excellent 13,253. It soared past the 10,483 premium laptop average, the Matebook X’s 12,913 (Intel Core i7-8550U) and the ThinkPad X1’s 13,173 (Intel Core i5-8250U). The Latitude 7490 was able to speed past all of the competition with a score of 14,458 (Intel Core i7-8650U).
MORE: Laptops with the Best Overall Performance
The EliteBook 840 took 15 minutes and 50 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p on our Handbrake test, which completely destroys its competitors’ results. The average premium laptop takes 22:05; the MateBook X slugged behind at 27:18; the Latitude 7490 beat the average, with 21:35, and the ThinkPad X1 took 19:00.
Copying 4.97GB of data was a breeze for the EliteBook 840’s 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, taking only 10 seconds (for 509 megabytes per second). The category average is nearly half that speed (286 MBps).
The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 (upgradable to AMD Radeon RX 540 2GB) maintained a solid 55 frames per second while running Dirt 3. While that is well above a playable 30 fps, the EliteBook’s competitors ran the game at higher frame rates.
Battery Life
The EliteBook 840 will last an average workday. While web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, the laptop lasted for 8 hours and 31 minutes. It narrowly beat the 8:20 average but fell behind the Latitude 7490 (8:55) and MateBook X (9:55), and it didn’t come close to the ThinkPad X1 (11:01). It’s important to note that the EliteBook 840 lasted only 6:17 while Sure View was turned on.
Webcam and Mic
While the Privacy Camera feature is neat, malicious hackers wouldn’t be able to make out much anyway. As I pulled my face toward the webcam, it could barely capture any details, whether it be the hairs on my head or the freckles on my face. This camera does handle contrast rather well, as the light from the office windows didn’t overwhelm the photo, but the colors were dull.
HP’s noise canceling, world-facing microphone can filter background noise decently, but voices not so much. I placed the back of the laptop toward my editor, who sits two chairs away from me, and the microphone could pick up her voice clearly as she spoke on the phone. Even though the microphone couldn’t remove background voices, the quality itself was relatively clear.
Heat
The EliteBook 840 can run a little warm, but nothing too extreme. After I ran an HD video for 15 minutes, the HP’s undercarriage measured 99 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s slightly above our 95-degree comfort threshold. Meanwhile, the touchpad and center of the keyboard hit a cooler 87 and 98 degrees, respectively. The hottest temp was 101 degrees, which came from the lower left side of the undercarriage.
Software and Warranty
HP jam-packs a ton of its own apps into the EliteBook 840. The most useful one is HP’s Recovery Manager, which can perform maintenance, reinstall drivers and manage backups. HP Support Assistant manages warranty and computer updates. On the security side, HP Client Security takes care of fingerprints, Sure Recover and other features.
HP JumpStart provides tutorials and download suggestions for people who need help with their PCs. HP PhoneWise allows you to connect your phone to your PC to take and make phone calls as well as send and receive text messages. HP WorkWise provides a way to manage your PC’s performance and security via a phone app with the same name. There’s also HP’s own download manager, a malware scanner for web browsers and a printing manager.
MORE: Best Hard Drive Speed
Along with all of those apps, comes a decent amount of bloatware, starring Candy Crush Saga, Cooking Fever, March of Empires: War of Lords and so much more.
The EliteBook 840 comes with a three-year limited warranty that can be downgraded to a one-year warranty. See how HP performed on our Tech Support Showdown and Best and Worst Brands ranking.
Configurations
The EliteBook 840 I tested cost $2,295 at the time of this review and comes with an Intel Core i7-8650U processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD and an Intel UHD Graphics 620.
The lowest possible config costs $1,182 and features an Intel Core i5-7200U, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB M2 SATA-3 TLC SSD. This config removes the webcam.
The ultimate version costs a meaty $3,319.50 and is capped out with an Intel Core i7-8650U processor, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB PCIe NVMe TLC SSD, an AMD Radeon RX 540 2GB graphics card and the 700-nit Sure View privacy display.
Bottom Line
Power, security, productivity and entertainment: The EliteBook 840 excels at it all. From its keyboard and privacy display to its speakers and performance, every aspect of this business laptop is high quality. Just avoid the dim display on the base model of this system if you can, particularly if you like to watch movies on your laptop.
If your main priority is battery life, go for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (starting at $1,519), which lasts a couple of hours longer on a charge and has a stunning (but pricey) optional HDR display. But overall, the EliteBook 840 provides everything you could want from a well-rounded business notebook.

Fun Strategies For Great Pictures!
Photography is wonderful being a profession, a pastime, or perhaps in order to recall times, events, and individuals http://www.propertyintelligencemedia.com.au/real-estate-photography that you want to preserve the memory of. In any case, this article will present you with some tips on the best way to take better pictures, and have the results you are searching for.
Enjoy the shutter speed setting to have shots of both slow and fast-moving subjects. Slow shutter speeds are great for objects that move very slowly, like streams. Fast shutter speeds, however, allow you to obtain a clear shot Baulkham Hills of the subject that may be moving rapidly, say for example a race car.
An excellent photography tip is to get a tripod. Using a tripod is vital because it will allow you to take a clear and focused picture. Don’t assume that you can go on a clear picture just by making use of your hands. Avoid blurry pictures through getting a tripod.
If you are intending for taking pictures outside, reevaluate the lighting every 10 minutes, as lights are constantly changing. Adjust your angle for top level possible shot and illuminate the characteristics that you are currently looking to highlight. Planning in advance is essential for producing quality photos.
The “S” stands for shutter speed. Use low shutter speed to obtain sharp pictures when capturing moving objects. Set the shutter speed to higher speeds for creating a more experimental picture. It is a cool feature to utilize when getting photos of fireworks or tail lights over a car. It is an great way to get artistic features in your photos.
Company Facebook
Learn to use aperture on the camera. It indicates how much of the items that is seen in your view finder are usually in focus. Low aperture means that merely the foreground will be in focus and the background are often more blurred. High aperture implies that everything will equally maintain focus.
Attempt to get as near as possible to your photo subject. Not accomplishing this can lead to photos which are too distant or blurred for virtually any clarity. Try so it will be easy on the audience in order to see images clearly and vividly.
Make sure you setup your compositions to ensure vertical lines are truly vertical. Tilting 1300203038 the digital camera backwards to capture a tall building, for instance, could cause the construction to show up as when it is falling backwards from the frame. Photographs by which buildings are not vertical often appear unnatural.
A great photography tip would be to not underestimate learning the fundamentals. In order to break the guidelines, you must at least know them first. Without knowing the fundamentals you’re doing yourself as well as your work a great disservice. One can learn about photography by simply searching the net.
Photography is an art! Create an illusion. The camera is actually a tool that you should show the entire world how you will see it or would like it to be. Discover ways to utilize it. You may make a physical object Australia appear taller or smaller or set it within a particular atmosphere if you focus on colors and exposure.
When performing an image shoot, take plenty of pictures. With digital cameras and computers, you may take near infinite pictures. You’ll have a better chance to getting good photos once you take more. And if you achieve bad ones, all you need to do is hit delete to get rid of them.
A great photograph should capture only 2153 part of something. You do not want to get a panoramic vision when you are able find the right detail that says it all. You ought to learn to try to find something which will speak to people and convey the meaning you are searching for.
A significant tip to take into consideration facing photography is you always wish to use the rule of thirds when taking landscape pictures. Consequently you need to have 2/3 of your own shot land and 1/3 sky, or viceversa. This can be a guide to help frame your shot correctly.
So that you can make the best and clearest photographs, you should utilize a tripod. A tripod allows you to stabilize the camera, so your photos will be in better focus. This is especially important if you are using Baulkham Hills a high-zoom lens or shooting at night, since small variations in the camera’s position can result in major blurring.
Discover various ways to modify your shutter speeds. A fast speed permits you to capture a precise picture of your moving object, but try experiencing with slower speeds, perhaps 1/30. For example, suppose you might be preparing to photograph a bicyclist in motion. Your results shows the background being streaked inside a horizontal manner, which shows speed.
Taking beautiful photographs can be something that many people wish they may do. Funny thing is you don’t must be an expert photographer in order to make which happen. Should you keep to the tips from this article, everyone can have better looking pictures that friends and relations will drool over.

The Pros
Slim and handsome design; Colorful, full-HD display; Comfortable keyboard; Long battery life; Strong overall performance
The Cons
Touchpad can be finicky; Some bloatware
Verdict
The Acer Aspire S 13 is one of the best ultraporable laptop values, offering strong performance, long battery life and a colorful display, all in a slim design.
Thin, light and long-lasting, the Acer Aspire S 13 has pretty much everything you want in an ultraportable laptop, and all for an affordable $749. This 13-inch notebook packs a speedy Core i5 processor, a fairly roomy 256GB SSD and a colorful full-HD display into a handsome chassis that’s only 0.57 inches thick. (A separate Core i7 model is also available.) The S 13 also offers robust Dolby sound and a comfy keyboard, although the touchpad can be pretty finicky at times. Overall, this Acer is one of the best values in its weight class.
Design
Acer deserves credit for not going down the MacBook-clone path like so many others have done. Instead of being yet another silver slab, the Aspire S 13 stands out with its obsidian-black color and textured nano-imprint cover, which gives the notebook a slick, pinstripe aesthetic. (You can also get this system in white, which is even more striking.)
The area around the keyboard and wrist rest is made of aluminum, while the bottom has rubber paint with a nice soft-touch feel. I also dig the diamond-cut edges around the deck and touchpad. The only eyesore on this machine is the thick plastic bezel around the 13-inch display.
The obsidian black Aspire S 13 stands out with a textured nano-imprint cover that gives the notebook a slick, pinstripe aesthetic.
Measuring 12.9 x 9 x 0.57 inches and weighing 2.9 pounds, the Aspire S 13 is plenty light enough for frequent travelers and students. It’s a bit lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Air (12.8 x 8.9 x 0.11-0.68 inches, 3 pounds), but has a similar footprint to that device. The 2.8-pound HP Envy 13t is about the same size as the Acer, while the Asus UX303UA weighs a heavier 3.4 pounds. The XPS 13 is the lightest and most compact of the bunch, at 2.6 pounds and 12 x 7.9 x 0.3-0.6 inches, thanks to its nearly bezel-less design.
Ports
Despite its thin profile, the Aspire S 13 has all the ports you need for today and tomorrow. The left side houses a USB 3.0 port, SD Card slot and headphone/mic jack, while the right side has the power port, HDMI port, another USB 3.0 port and a USB Type-C port.
Display
The Aspire S 13 I reviewed came with a nontouch 1080p display, but you can order it with a touch-screen panel. I’d stick with nontouch, as you’ll get more battery life. Plus, this panel is plenty colorful and bright.
While watching the trailer for Suicide Squad on the S 13’s display, I could make out every slicked-back lock in the Joker’s green do, and I appreciated the shimmer from his black jacket. The viewing angles could be a bit wider, though, as I noticed colors shifting at about 35 degrees off-center.
The Acer’s screen performed well on various lab tests, including a color gamut of 106.8 percent. That blows the doors off of the MacBook Air (66 percent) and beats the nontouch XPS 13 (92 percent) and HP Envy 13t (103 percent), but the Asus Zenbook UX303UA was even better, at 116 percent. The S 13’s screen is also fairly accurate, as it turned in a Delta-E rating of 0.98 (0 is perfect).
I had no trouble working outdoors with the S 13; even on a bright, sunny day I could make out the screen, thanks to its 327 nits of brightness. That outshines most of the competition, with the exception of the MacBook Air (334 nits).
If you’re going to be staring at the display for long periods of time, you can toggle the Acer Bluelight Shield setting, which is designed to lower blue-light emissions to reduce eyestrain and prevent fatigue. (You’ll find this setting in the Acer Quick Access app.)
Turning this feature on gives the screen a yellowish, more book-like hue, which I found weird at first but comfortable after a while.
Audio
The stereo speakers on the Aspire S 13 are so powerful I had to turn the volume down so as not to scare the heck out of family members — and that was just for email alerts in Outlook.
MORE: The Best Laptops for Every Need
I experienced room-filling audio when I played the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ “The Impression That I Get” with a shockingly wide sound stage; I could easily hear Dicky Barrett’s gravelly vocals over the peppy horns. The audio started to distort at closer to 100 percent volume, but at 90 percent or less there was still plenty of punch.
The speakers on the Aspire S 13 are so powerful I had to turn the volume down so as not to scare family members — and that was just for email alerts.
The Dolby Audio app allows you to choose from multiple sound profiles, including Music, Movie, Game and Voice, but I stuck with Dynamic most of the time, as it’s supposed to change the profile on the fly. There’s also an equalizer if you want to really dig deep.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The S 13’s keyboard offers a comfy typing experience, but I would change a couple of things. Despite offering just 0.87 mm of travel (we prefer 1mm or more), the keys had a nice, pillowy feel as I typed, letting me reach 75 words per minute with just 2 errors. That’s a bit faster than my 70 wpm average.
The layout offers two different stages of backlighting, one for dimly lit rooms and another that goes to full brightness. My problem with the layout is that the function keys are reversed for various shortcuts. For example, you need to press Fn and then the F8 button to mute the sound, as opposed to just F8 itself. Also, the function keys are tiny.
It may be called a Precision Touchpad, but I found the large, 4.1 x 2.5-inch touchpad less than precise. While two-finger scrolling was fairly smooth and I easily executed Windows 10 gestures (such as swiping three fingers up to see all apps), the cursor stuttered a bit as I navigated the desktop. This made selecting text a challenge. In addition, the cursor sometimes moved when I accidentally brushed the pad, and sometimes I would inadvertently select text. Better palm rejection would help.
Performance
With its 6th-Generation Core i5-6200U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, the Aspire S 13 proved swift in my testing. It ably juggled 16 tabs in Chrome while I played an episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix in another window. Only when I added a 17th tab did I start to see a bit of slowdown.
MORE: Best Ultrabooks (Thin-and-Light Windows Laptops)
On the Geekbench 3 test, which measures overall performance, the Aspire S 13 scored 6,331, which is comparable to the showings of its closest competitors. The Core i7 model of the S 13 notched 6,925 on the same test.
The Asus UX303UA, which has the same processor as the Acer, notched a slightly lower 6,290, while the Dell XPS 13 nontouch (6,391) and HP Envy (6,306) — also with the same CPU — were neck and neck with the S 13. The MacBook Air was far behind, at 5,783, but it also has an older, 5th-Generation processor.
The S 13’s SSD is faster than the average ultraportable’s, but behind the best we’ve tested. It took the system 30 seconds to copy about 5GB worth of mixed-media files, giving it a transfer rate of 167.7 megabytes per second. That trumps the Asus UX303UA (159 MBps) and lowly HP 13t (77.1 MBps), but the Dell XPS 13 (231.3 MBps) and MacBook Air (358.4 MBps) are considerably faster.
You should have no problem crunching numbers with this notebook, as the Aspire S 13 took a brisk 4 minutes and 29 seconds to match 20,000 names and addresses in OpenOffice. That’s the same amount of time as the Asus, slightly faster than the Dell XPS 13 (4:33) and only a second behind the HP Envy 13t. The MacBook Air was a much faster 4:03. The Core i7 version of the S 13 took the same amount of time as the Mac.
Battery Life
The Acer Aspire S 13 has the battery life to last a cross-country flight, and then some. On the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi (at 100 nits of screen brightness), the system lasted a strong 9 hours and 8 minutes. The Core i7 version of the S 13 we tested lasted an evern longer 9:48.
That run time smokes the HP Envy 13t (5:48) and also beats the Asus UX303UA (8:27) and the ultraportable category average (8:10). However, the more expensive Dell XPS 13 and 13-inch MacBook Air lasted much longer, at 11:54 and 14 hours, respectively.
MORE: Laptops with the Longest Battery Life
Webcam
Most webcams on Windows laptops are terrible, but the Aspire S 13’s 720p camera is pretty decent. My salmon-colored shirt looked accurate in a selfie, although my face was a bit blurry. I conducted one video call over Skype and another over BlueJeans, and other callers didn’t have any complaints.
Software
Acer includes a few useful utilities, along with more bloatware than we’d like. The compact Acer Quick Access app lets you toggle the Bluelight Shield function for when you want to reduce eye strain, use power-off USB charging (which lets you juice gadgets even when the system is powered down) and enable network sharing. Acer Care Center combines access to support, recovery management, updates and tune-ups in one app. The strangely redundant Acer Power Button app lets you turn off the display or tell the notebook to sleep, hibernate or shut down.
Acer bundles some third-party software that we’d rather download ourselves, and some we can live without altogether. The former camp includes Netflix and Skype, and the latter includes Amazon Kindle and WildTangent Games. There are also trials of Microsoft Office and McAfee Internet Security Suite.
Configuration Options
We reviewed the Acer Aspire S13 S5-371-52JR, which retails for $749 and features a Core i5-6200U processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 13.3-inch and 1920 x 1080 display. Stepping up to the $799 white model (the S5-371T-58CC) gets you the white color and an IPS display with wider viewing angles. Acer also offers models with a Core i7 CPU and 512GB SSD for $999, or you could just get the larger SSD paired with a Core i5 chip for $899.
Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a great student laptop or a machine for frequent travel, or if you just want a lightweight laptop that can go the distance, the Acer Aspire S 13 is one of the best bargains around. For $749, you get a speedy Core i5 processor, a 256GB SSD, a colorful full-HD display and more than 9 hours of battery life, all wrapped up in a svelte package that doesn’t ape Apple. The stereo speakers also impressed, delivering surprisingly robust audio. I just wish the touchpad weren’t so sensitive, as it sometimes just got in the way.
The Dell XPS 13 is the better bet if you want longer battery life in a more compact design, but it costs a pricey $999 with a Core i5 processor and smaller 128GB SSD (and $1,149 with 256GB). The Asus UX303UA is another strong contender, offering comparable performance to the Aspire S 13 in an all-metal design for $799, but it offers lackluster audio and doesn’t last quite as long on a charge as the Acer does. Overall, the Aspire S 13 is one heck of a value and one of our favorite ultraportable laptops.
