enjoying the fantasy novel i picked up secondhand for ten dollar but at the same time i can’t decide if it’s banger or mid. v solid worldbuilding that draws from pre-islamic middle eastern folklore (as well as other stuff for sure but that’s the one i immediately picked up on) you can tell the author has done their research and is passionate as fuck abt it. but☝️the characters are comparatively a bit sauceless. i generally dislike it when non-human characters feel fundamentally indistinct from the humans and that’s lowkey the case here. your djinn do not feel djinn enough im sorry

#textphelia #we had like ONE (1) flashback sequence w the main dude where he was giving tho #i was like wait chat this is epic. why isn’t he the narrator.#we just do not get to see as much of his personality when we don’t get his narration accompanying it #and that’s an issue on the writer’s part bc you should be able to characterize your guy with things other than his own narration #oh also the lil breadcrumbs that get periodically dropped to set up the romantic/sexual chemistry and attraction are v clumsy #cringe even. sorry.#like a GLARING weak point in otherwise p solid writing #the book is city of brass btw if any of you guys have read it and want to add your 2 cents i suppose
