i have a bunch of chickens - mostly birds we hatched a few years ago from their mothers' eggs. for a while now i've maintained you should have a minimum of 9-10 hens if you have a rooster (because those bastards are really hard on the hens), and while i did donate the last rooster to a worthy cause (our resident grey fox), we still have the hens
and when you have 18 hens you often have an excess of eggs - these girls are getting older but still will lay an egg every other day, except in the winter when we got down to one egg per day total
but spring is approaching, the days are rapidly getting longer, and the hens are now giving 6 eggs every day, which is 3-5 more than we eat
luckily i have a fellow who loves our eggs and always absolutely insists on overpaying. at first i felt like i was twelve again and my grandmother was giving me money and i felt like i have to say no that's too much and then she gifts it anyways, with jeff i tried to talk him down to my requested price ($5 for chicken eggs, $8 for duck, dozens of course) but he was adamant
today he went far beyond yet again
idk why but he has these super crisp brand new $2 bills, he gave me $50 for a dozen duck and four dozen chicken eggs - almost double what i ask for. i've stopped arguing lol i just take whatever he hands me
#he doesn't have time for chickens but he works out a lot and eats lots of eggs for the protein#and his daughter has some condition where there are very few foods she can eat but she can def eat eggs#so they eat a dozen eggs between the two of them every day#it still isn't really a money making operation#i maybe get free eggs when all is said and done#the birds are fed some food to supplement free ranging and that's a lot in the winter#in the summer they barely eat what i give them#there's also building and fixing coops and lots of work#i do get excellent fertilizer for the garden from it

Diet
Woooo, is this subject ever a pain in my ass for something so simple...
There is just... SO much misinformation out there, from sources that should otherwise be credible.
So let me set the record straight as a specialist in the care of pigeons:
Pigeons are strict granivores.
They can’t digest any part of a plant but seeds.
No leafy greens. No stems. No roots, no tubers, no bulbs, no flowers...
ESPECIALLY not the fruit!!!
They can neither taste nor process the sugar!
Nothing but seeds.
Not even as a treat.
Vets often suggest greens and fruit and florets for literally every companion bird, going off the parrot template.
If a small animal (non-farm) vet gets to see a companion bird, you can reliably wager that it’s either a psittacine or finch, and win that bet most of the time.
Hardly any one ever brings pigeons to a vet.
Breeders consider it cheaper to kill the sick ones than try to find out what’s wrong with them, and pigeons as companion birds are still extremely niche.
The only way to change this is for people with pet pigeons to bring them to their vet like they would a cat, dog, rabbit, or other pet for regular check ups so that a base line can be established before that animal gets ill.
The more vets provided with base lines of healthy pigeons, the more accurately they will be able to treat pet pigeons.
Parrots in captivity that are fed the fruit and nut heavy diet that most species eat in the wild will develop fatty liver disease and die very young.
Wild parrots fly for MILES every day to forage that sugar and fat rich diet, which fuels their long foraging flights.
Their diet is adapted to their lifestyle, and their lifestyle is adapted to their diet, as is the case with most species.
Parrots have only been captive bred for the last 70 or so years. The larger species take up to 5 to sexually mature, and can live into their 70′s or 80′s
We have been breeding them in captivity for less than the lifetime of a single healthy individual.
Parrots simply have not had the time to physiologically adapt to the utterly sedentary life they live as human house pets.
We take these birds built for a high stamina nomadic lifestyle supported by a diet high in fat and sugar, and have them live most of their lives in a single room.
To keep them alive, we have had to make up for their lack of opportunity to adapt their physiology by adapting their captive diet to this drastic change in their life style.
Even finches (primarily seed and insect eaters, mostly) are usually kept in such extreme confinement that their captive diet has needed to be modified to avoid being dragged to an early grave by a fatty liver.
Pigeons were the first birds humanity domesticated.
Even before chickens.
About the time camels were domesticated; in the dawn of agriculture and stationary settlements.
What made them easy to domesticate was that, being desert/scrubland birds, seed was the diet they were already adapted to.
It was easy enough to share enough grain with them to make living in a dovecote worth while.
In exchange, humans got some of the most nutritious fertilizer known to man to this day.
Being picky about what kind of seed you eat isn’t beneficial of a desert bird, and wild rock doves already adjusted the volume of their feed intake with the natural fluctuation of seed availability through out the year; eating more when they had to fly further afield to find it, and needing to eat less per foraging trip when there was enough nearby that they didn’t have to range as far.
Because adjusting their food intake according to how close and plentiful food was already came naturally to rock doves, the only transition in the development of domestic pigeons was that food would always be close and plentiful.
Pigeons have had THOUSANDS of years to adapt to not having to fly nearly so far to find enough to eat in human care as their rock dove ancestors did in the wild.
Here is the basic break down of nutritional requirements for racing homers (the breed that serves as the base line for domestic pigeons), according to Avian Medicine: Principles and Applications. Ritchie, Harrison and Harrison;
Pet shops are starting to sell dove and pigeon diets now, lots of which would make decent bases, but still need extra protein or fat added.
There are also lots of wild bird blends that make good bases.
I used to love royal wing Classic Mix from TSC, as it was easily accessible, but it needs a lot added to it, and that can get pretty expensive.
Chewy sells an excellent diet designed for pigeons breeding and performing: https://www.chewy.com/versele-laga-classic-pigeon-food/dp/259128 , which is what we order for the flock now.
But for a house pet or two, it’s often easier and less expensive to mix your own blend.
Pigeons can eat pretty much any whole (in the hull) seed that they can comfortably swallow.
Birds that are performing, raising peeps, or under weight need all the fat and protein they can get, so lots of dried legumes for protein (Mung beans, lentils, and split green peas are favorites), millet (fatty and high protein, especially easy to digest), safflower seeds, and black oil sunflower seeds (rich in oil and extremely fatty).
Non-breeding House pets tend not to need as much fat, so their feed should be higher grain like wheat, barley, and oats with lower fatty or high protein seeds.
The more confined the bird (unless the bird is sick or healing from an injury), the less fat it needs in its diet.
So the owners of a pet or two are free and encouraged to experiment with their blends.
Most pigeon’s can’t comfortably swallow striped sunflower seeds, so keep your selection below that in size.
Chopped up tree nuts or peanuts are an EXTREMELY high fat treat (think pigeon cheese cake) and should be given *very* sparingly.
Chia seeds have a very high caffeine content and need to be avoided.
Other than that, you can experiment with any grain, legume, or other seed small enough for them to swallow, provided nutritional parameters are maintained.
Do not used hulled seeds!
The hull is important, not because they can digest cellulose, but because they can’t. (which is why they can’t process any part of a plant except the seed)
The hulls of seeds they eat make up the vast bulk of solid fecal matter and act as vital dietary fiber.
That pigeons need grit to grind down food in their gizzard is a myth.
They need it to obtain dietary minerals, and that distinction is a matter of life and death.
Avoid the starter chick grit for chickens, and the charcoal grit for song birds, as these are both made with a base of Granite, which is made by leeching the calcium out of lime stone.
Galliformes need granite grit because it won’t break down in their gizzard, where they use it as a mechanical aid to grind food.
That’s exactly what makes granite based grit a serious intestinal impaction risk for a columbiform like our domestic pigeons.
Because what they need grit for is dietary minerals, it’s important that their grit dissolve in the gizzard to be absorbed by the small intestine.
Hens will lay eggs with or with out a cock, and the cock also has a skeleton to maintain, so calcium supplements are a necessity.
Hens and breeding cocks can also get salt deficient from both producing eggs and feeding peeps.
My breeding flock has Oyster Shell grit offered free choice and free access to a salt and mineral brick for horses.
It is generally safest to assume that a new pigeon has not been adequately supplemented, because birds who have not will gorge on grit and salt to their detriment.
Pigeons deficient enough t crave it can poison themselves overdosing on salt. Salt poisoning is nearly always fatal!!! so do not ever offer pigeons any kind of salt based grit in a loose, granular form.
I use the salt and mineral brick because their beaks are not hard enough and they do not have sufficient bite strength to get large enough quantities off of the brick to sicken themselves before the craving for that mineral is satisfied.
A single indoor pet can be given one of the little salt/mineral wheels for hamsters.
Calcium deficient pigeons craving grit can impact their crops gorging on it.
As stated earlier, my loft birds have free choice access to oyster shell grit next to their feed.
To prevent new birds form gorging dangerously on it, a tiny pinch is sprinkled over their meals every morning during their 4 week quarantine.
By the time quarantine ends, they are not deficient, and will not be craving grit ravenously enough to hurt themselves on it.
Bon appetite to your sweet cooey friends and house mates. ^v^

Free Range Chicken Newtonville Ontario
Order Free Range Chicken in Newtonville Ontario when organizing family get together
Pasture raised chickens, on the other hand, are raised outside in bottomless pens that are moved daily to fresh green grass in their pasture. The pens protect the young birds from predators while allowing them to roam and feed. In this environment, the chickens scratch the ground and eat bugs and worms and seeds along with their grain. They enjoy the fresh air and sunshine that the outdoors provides. Their manure is spread over the entire pasture as they move around which fertilizes the soil and keeps the pasture lush and green for each subsequent year's rotation.
Many say chickens can not possibly eat grass, that their digestive tract isn't set up for it. They say it looks like chickens are eating grass but really they are just picking at things between the blades of grass. If allowed, chickens will consume maxm of their calories from grass. That is a lot of grass since grass is very low in calories. Chickens also need animal protein. Just like humans chickens are omnivores. The all vegetarian chicken is more of a convenience to the mass-producer, so he doesn't have to worry about the potential of latent animal diseases in poultry feed. They are leery of disease, which might bring about the destruction of their entire laying flock.
Strictly vegetarian fed chickens can potentially be undernourished. An all-vegetarian diet is not natural as stated earlier they need animal protein. Chickens need to be free to roam grasslands that are not stripped by too many animals in one place, allowing them to consume a myriad of bugs and lots of wild plants. When supplemented with grains, and especially with fish meal, these chickens will be the healthiest around, and live and lay eggs for many, many years. Farmers say chickens can lay eggs for twelve years or more. Fish meal is the biggest source of protein for those healthy birds.
Health Benefits of Pasture Raised Chicken in Newtonville Ontario
1. Chemical-free meat. Because of how free-range chickens are commercially raised they are washed with heavily chlorinated water which leaves a chemical residue on the meat. Pasture-raising is actually a more sanitary method of raising chickens, and does not require heavily chlorinated water washing.
2. No antibiotics. Pasture raised chickens are healthier (no overcrowding, natural environment, etc) which translates into healthier meat. Chickens raised on pasture do not need antibiotics or other medication to keep them alive.
youtube
Allowing chickens to consume as much living grass as they want as well as other living things in natural grasslands can give significant health benefits to the consumer today. It is being considered more and more that grass-fed or pastured poultry eggs are good for the heart, and that not only should they not be avoided, gut they should be specifically included in the diet. Buy Grass Fed Chicken in Newtonville Ontario for more health benefits.
Did you know that chickens raised on pasture are nutritionally superior to those raised in commercial factory settings? Pastured poultry are chickens (and other birds like ducks and geese) that are raised in bottomless cages on grass where they peck and scratch at the ground and hunt for bugs and seeds along with their grain. Their manure is spread over wide areas of pasture as they are moved. This is better for the birds and the soil. Buy Pastured Chicken in Newtonville Ontario for family get together.
Sometimes they are mistakenly called free range chickens. Free range chickens are still kept in confinement, they are just allowed to "free range" inside their buildings. From egg to plastic wrapped drumsticks, commercial poultry are housed in closed confinement, their feet always in their own manure and do not get the benefits of fresh air and sunshine on pasture.
The beauty of living in the countryside offers the experience of eating organic chicken, but it is also available in the cities in small quantities. Organic chickens usually just roam around to find food. People raising these chickens use rice, corn or any food available to feed them. They simply call the chickens in some distinct way and the chickens come racing as if panicking for the food. They then throw the grains or any food and each chicken picks as many as it can. When the regular meal is over, the chickens roam around and search the ground for any available food which may be plants, insects, seeds, and if the area is coastal, small fish and live small shellfish.
Organic Chicken in Newtonville Ontario has high beneficial fats that lower cholesterol, and higher amount of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Vitamin A. Their eggs taste much better than those from commercially-raised chickens which receive regular dose of antibiotics, vaccines and other medications. Though it takes longer cooking time for the meat of most native chickens, its taste is incomparable with 28-day broiler confined in overcrowded poultry houses where they also release their wastes.
For organic chicken consumers, eating Free Range Chicken in Newtonville Ontario does not only provide health benefits but also better ecosystem. Chickens raised in the open catch insects that may be harmful to the plants, scavenge crop residue and help in fertilizing the soil through its organic manure. By the way, farms using chicken dung as fertilizer do not necessarily produce organic crops. Chicken dung are bought from commercial poultry farms that use chemicals and medications which are proven to be harmful to the human body.
A true free-range chicken gets to forage naturally for food typical to their diet which includes insects, worms, various kinds of seeds and green plants. This natural diet my also be supplemented with grain or laying mash. In addition, free-range chickens are exposed to a natural source of lighting (the sun) and fresh air outside the coop.
You can raise pastured chickens easily right in your backyard. Even in urban areas, one can raise free-range chickens by simply utilizing a portable chicken coop with run. This will allow your birds room to roam more freely with the added benefit of foraging naturally for their food.
There are several reasons why people are raising free range chickens. The first reason is that chickens, especially free range chickens, give you an endless supply of high quality food. Chickens are easy to raise and they do not require much room. A person that lives in an apartment can purchase a portable chicken coop and raise several chickens. All that is needed is for the chickens to be taken out several times a day for sunlight, exercise, and food.

Drink mixes can check a lot boxes for us in both prepper pantries and bug-out/evac situations. Electrolyte drinks, vitamin and protein boosters, and meal replacement mixes would get top billing as a prepper supply, but instant mixes span far and wide. We have nearly endless options when it comes to stocking drink mixes, right on local supermarket shelves.
*I expect some “bah” with any article, especially the must-have’s and “frilly” subjects. If we go “bah” at every other concept in this article, please read and consider the sections on fiber and supportive care.
Caffeine
Related to fiber, remember: Caffeine isn’t just a night-watch or feel-good luxury. If we’re accustomed to caffeine and suddenly limit or eliminate it, our guts are likely to stop up.
Fiber
Many Americans are already lacking fiber in their diets. Eating heavily off gardens and buckets of beans will alleviate it, but if we’re heavily stocked in MREs and just-add-water camping meals – especially for bug-out bags – fiber is a huge issue.
Some tubs and packets of a high-fiber drink mix (NOT a “cleanse) can alleviate those problems, regularly with added benefits.
Gut-health drinks like Culturelle and others can also be a gentle way to ease stomachs during major changes in diet. They can be especially helpful for kids, seniors, and people who already have food sensitivities.
Condensed Calories
Almost all of the examples have a big benefit for preppers, whether we’re working out of pantries or a bag: They boost calories.
Whether we’ve invested in pre-packaged just-add-water food systems or slowly stacking up beans, rice, and wheat, food storage is regularly deficient in calories (and fats).
We have to have energy to get things done.
While many of us have some weight we could lose now, should we ever find ourselves doing more by hand, we’re going to shed some pounds. The gardens many plan to start and the wilds many plan to forage through, short-term on a bug-out or for weeks/months on end, tend to provide mostly lean diet foods. Very few preppers are growing calorie or fat staples.
When you see “diet” and “light” options and weight-loss drinks here, for the most part, they’re being presented as an add-on to our planned food storage meals, and a way to boost BOB supplies and caches without too much space and weight.
Some of the sugar-free and “light” options won’t boost them much, but most boost at least a little.
Feel Goods
Feel-good food supplies aren’t just about feeling “good”. It’s also about health. Personal reactions differ, but sudden changes create stress. Whether we recognize or acknowledge it, that stress affects our bodies and brains.
Pick-me-ups – both on a schedule we and ours can be looking forward to and periodic pop-up surprises – can ease transitions with goodies that would normally be “treats” and by maintaining some normal for households accustomed to a daily non-water drink.
K-Cups have taken over the supermarket aisles where powdered cappuccino types used to live, but those tins and small packets are still out there. Hot cocoa mixes are still prevalent, as are the mostly-just-flavor types that range from things like Nesquik to powdered “iced” tea and lemonade (well … sorta-lemonade and tea).
Electrolytes
There’s a reason the Gators developed their wonder blend. We have to have certain types of salts to function. Labor and heat require replacing those salts more frequently.
Most of us will find ourselves drinking more water and fewer soft drinks if we ever have to rely on our food storage. Even if we’re already mostly drinking water, the foods we’ll have access to will usually shift. That will change the minerals available to our bodies.
If we’re laboring, we’ll push water even more heavily, but “push water” can be a double-edged sword.
When we “dropped” Marines in support fields on exercises and forewarned marches, it wasn’t always from dehydration. Regularly, it was actually that they’d push water, push it enough with little balance, that they flushed the required electrolytes from their systems.
It doesn’t have to be a pricey brand and there are plenty of at-home mixes with ingredients that can be stored for people whose bodies are pure temples. This one is too important to ignore, along with…
Bedside Bottles
In many disasters, supportive care is all we’re going to be able to offer. It’s already sometimes all hospitals can offer, here and now. Sports drinks and alternatives like Pedialyte – or any reasonably balanced drink – can play a major role in that care. We already apply it combating and recovering from illnesses in everyday life with short-term stomach and head flues for both children and adults (and pets).
If for no other reason, snag some tubs of semi-decent drink mixes to stash with the medical supplies.
Protein
As with calories, a lot of food storage is seriously low in protein. Like whey as a protein source, there’s a lot of back and forth on just how much protein we need. Do some balanced research, but if you’re snagging some drink mixes, consider including the higher-protein version or a protein alternative, especially if the price difference isn’t significant.
Many protein shakes are pretty high cal. That adds to their value for sickbed support, jaw injuries, and injuries that prevent us from our usual hunting, livestock and garden and crop care, fishing, or even “just” cooking.
They can also help keep somebody drifting from food fatigue or depression “fed” enough to get them over their slumps and prevent the energy-loss that leads to a spiralling cycle (don’t eat, less energy, less activity, decreased appetite, less energy yet, further decreased activity and appetite, downward and downward).
When comparing options, hit the senior-citizen and diabetic sections of food supplements as well as muscle-building, athletic, and fad-diet aisles. It varies label-by-label, but general meal-replacement, weight-loss, and snack shakes can also regularly be good ways to boost protein, as well as calories and daily-need vitamins.
The calorie and protein energy provided makes those shakes and drink mixes something to also seriously think about for evac kits and bug-out bags, replacing or augmenting things like MREs, camping food, and ration bars that are common go-to’s.
Vitamin Deficiency
Further poking at common food storage, both MRE-type and just-add-water-kit preppers and the beans-and-rice preppers are skirting some vitamin deficiencies. A daily multivitamin can allay many of the factors and stores compactly, but if we can kill two birds with one stone…
Our changing society means there’s a whole wide world of drink supplements. We can go as crazy as we like with green and red juicing alternatives, happy-fad grains, coconut water, and super-foods.
Or, we can scale back and check out some of the old standby’s with a new eye. Many of those quickie drinks, from Hi-C to Hawaiian Punch, Wyler’s at the green-sign dollar stores to Crystal Light, have some valuable vitamins and minerals in them. Options like Slimfast, Boost, and Carnation also tend to check the box for vitamins.
Vitamin C is a big general health boost all on its own and especially in winter and spring, if we face lowered sanitation, and cold and flu seasons. Research where the term “Limeys” came from if you want an idea of just how important Vitamin C is when you’re on a repetitive diet low in fresh foods.
B-Vitamins also have widespread effects. Vitamin D, especially, is one to check for as it affects absorption of calcium and greatly influences brain health.
Buying Considerations
Some drink mixes are only available in single-serve packets. They’re convenient, but there’s a trash/waste aspect. There’s also space efficiency loss with many of the boxed packets. We can absolutely bust them out of boxes to repack more densely, but doing so decreases our ability to donate them later if they’re not something we’ll be rotating through in daily life.
Big-tub sizes tend to be friendlier on the wallet. Depending on family/group size, they can be very reasonable to consume once opened, and we can always repackage in bottle-sized portions for travel bags, and mix single-serve bottles (or jars) to help with portion control when we’re leaning on food storage in a permanent-home setting.
Food storage companies haven’t ignored the expanding interests in drink mixes. Pretty much all labels sell flavored milk substitutes, and most sell some version of a Tang or Kool-Aid level orange drink and apple drink. Some offer expanded options that vary in sugar content and actual vitamins.
When pricing those, make sure to weigh how “worth it” they are and our priorities.
The difference of storage in a steel can or Mylar bag really isn’t all that different from what we’ll get with plastic tubs and packets. #10 and #2.5 cans are a little more moisture and pest resistant, but those aspects are pretty easily mitigated by storing them in Rubbermaid totes or repacking in canning jars.
Supermarket options allow us to sample a smaller size for less outlay, even if the price per serving is much higher. That’s not just about “taste” and personal preferences. Some anti-caking components and certain types of sweeteners, especially, can lead to dry mouth, stomach upset, shaky hands, and headaches for some of us.
We also want to get the most bang for our buck.
Check mixes – especially for shakes – to see what the nutritional content is on its own. Many call for milk. Using water, milk substitutes, and non-fat whey milk can affect what we’re actually consuming.
On the dairy front, also compare apples to apples the common milk and milk-substitute options. Each has pro-con’s we’ll have to weigh, especially when it comes to calories, shelf life, number of same-sized servings per dollar and by can, and ease in mixing.
Protein-supplemented drink mixes and instant juices with actual vitamins tend to be more expensive, but have a great deal to offer. Even the inexpensive options we can snag incrementally from a green-sign dollar stare can make a big difference in health and mentality, though. Instant broth and creamed soups are a whole realm all their own, with their own range of benefits for preppers.
Drink Mixes
Priorities will always differ, as will our individual capabilities. That applies to stocking drink mixes, but they’re worth some consideration. Some rate a place in our pantries just to help maintain norms or transition to a new normal. Some fall into general nutrition and diet. Some offer the ability to soothe a really bad day. Some really shine in a bug-out or high-labor situations. Others have actual medical applications.
Drink mixes might not be an obvious must-have, but they’re too inexpensive, compact, and accessible to ignore.

No Time For Meal Prep? New Delivery Services Make It Easy To Stick To Your Protocol
There is truly nothing to fear when it comes to changing your diet, if you're open to the help of a little technology. Changing one's diet can be extremely stressful for many. Particularly when they don't feel that they have control over it, like when they've been told they must follow a specific protocol to help manage a chronic disease, or they resent the disruption to their normal routine. Admittedly, the initial changes can be an adjustment but thankfully, many enterprising chefs have decided you can take the guesswork out of your new protocol by letting them do the cooking at your place, (sort of). Meal and meal kit delivery is becoming increasingly popular among many. From time-crunched students, to busy families, to people needing to keep strict dietary compliance, these services are brilliant! Read more
These types of services are extremely convenient and can be separated into two basic categories (although a few have hybrids of both). Some will prepare entire meals that are ready to be reheated and eaten, others, will deliver the fresh, prepped ingredients with detailed cooking instructions and you prepare the rest of the meal yourself. We don't recommend one type of service over the other, we think the best way to consider them, beside which may fit a specific protocol best, is how much do you enjoy, or how much time do you have, to devote to being in the kitchen? Is part of using a delivery service attractive to you because you don't have to cook? That's completely fair and is exactly why these services exist in the first place! There's also absolutely nothing to say you can't use more than one service, either. Regardless of where your meals may be coming from, we all eat so many times a day, so many times a week, right? For someone who loves to cook, but only when they have time on the weekends, that may mean using one service a few days a week and another for the weeknights when they're in a hurry, which provides fully prepared meals that save time. That may sound like a hassle, but with easy to use mobile apps and desktop sites to work with, it can certainly still be easier than pouring through cookbooks and websites and trying untested recipes, then slogging to the dreaded grocery store to collect everything you need.
After looking over so many of the menus offered by the companies we'll talk about below, we can say their prices are all fair for their offerings. If you're the type of cook who ends up with a lot of waste at the end of the week, we can even go as far as saying they can be money savers, too. As always, we are not affiliated with any of these services and aim only to help our patients and readers on their journey with dietary change, and helping them make informed decisions while they learn about new strategies for eating. Improving their quality of life while we're at it never hurts, either.
We used several broad criteria when selecting which of these services to recommend. To begin, we looked for companies that support specific dietary protocols such as: Paleo, Keto, Autoimmune Protocol (AIP), vegetarian, gluten-free, vegan and more. Then, of course, we checked pricing, because that's just logic taking over. We think it makes the most sense to judge each of them for their own value, instead of judging them against each other, because in many cases it can be like comparing apples to oranges. Companies that offer organic, antibiotic, hormone and GMO-free foods were especially attractive to us for a myriad of health and environmental reasons. And finally, if they aim to provide local and/or sustainable meat and produce, that was all the better!
Without further ado.
SunBasket.com - This service met many of our criteria handedly. In terms of the protocols they support, there are many, including: Paleo, gluten-free, vegetarian, and a proprietary menu they call Lean+Clean (which we have not reviewed specifically and cannot recommend for any one particular protocol. That is not to say that we do not encourage you to do your own research if you are interested, please do!). They use sustainable and organic foods in their recipes and are committed to using only hormone and antibiotic free meats. Their seafood is always recommended as Best Choice or Good Alternative by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program. Their recipes are designed to be on the table in 30 minutes, so they're great for weeknights. Orders come delivered weekly in 100% recyclable packing materials. With their Classic Menu they offer 18 menus to choose from at $6.16 per serving. Family menus have 6 menus to choose from at $6.62 per serving.
Plated.com - We will begin with the caveat that they do not offer protocol specific menus, rather, "Globally inspired, Chef designed menus." That said, they offer so many mix and match dishes that depending upon the dish and protocol, this service might still very well work for you. They offer 20 recipes to choose from and even a "rate and review" option that helps curate future menus for you. That was something we only noticed Plated doing and believe it's another reason to check them out, even if they may not list your specific protocol, they may still very well have dishes that fit all your criteria. They are committed to sustainable fishing, and serve only hormone and antibiotic free meats, supplementing with organic ingredients when possible. They use a volume pricing method, meaning the more servings you buy, the less expensive they become. 2-3 servings are $11.95 each while 4 or more drop to $9.95. They offer free shipping on orders over $60.
GreenChef.com - This service really stood out to us due to their seriousness towards gluten-free cooking. They were the first meal delivery service to be certified with the Gluten Intolerance Group's GFFS program. That gives us much confidence when recommending gluten-free eaters check them out. In addition to their gluten free menus they also offer: omnivore, carnivore, Paleo, Keto, vegan, and vegetarian menus. Many of which come in Family size. They use all organic ingredients. Their pricing is fairly straightforward but dependent upon which menus you order from and how many you are feeding. From their site:
"Our pricing is based on the plan you choose and how many people will be eating each dinner.
2-Person Plan: 1 box contains 3 dinners for 2 people (6 meals/servings total per box).
Family Plan: 1 box contains 2 dinners for a family of four, served family-style for parents and kids (8 meals/servings total per box).
Vegetarian $10.49 per meal
Omnivore $11.99 per meal
Vegan $11.99 per meal
Carnivore $13.49 per meal
Gluten-free $13.49 per meal
Paleo $14.99 per meal
Note: Based on the protein preferences you set for the Omnivore or Carnivore Plan, you may receive a menu that falls under a different meal plan. Don't worry-we'll always charge you the lower price of the two plans.
Family Omnivore $11.99 per meal
Family Carnivore $12.99 per meal
Note: Above prices do not include $9 shipping and handling per box."
CavemanChefs.com - This is a Colorado-based company directly serving the Denver-metro area, but they do offer next day shipping to areas outside of it. One of the things we found interesting is that they provide pick up locations at many CrossFit boxes in the area, killing two birds with one stone for many. What could be better than a workout then returning home with dinner without an additional stop? As their name implies, they focus on preparing Paleo meals and even Paleo catering, which is especially awesome when you're hosting an event but don't want to derail your dietary progress. As we were looking around their site we noticed they also offer menus for SIBO, low fodmap, Keto, Whole30 and PaleoAIP. In fact, according to their site, they are the first SIBO-specific meal delivery service in the U.S.! They offer up to 10 meals each week to choose from. As well, they are champions of environmental stewardship, sustainability, and humanely raised meats. They offer 100% grass-fed wagyu beef and lamb. As well as 100% antibiotic and hormone free pork and chicken, and wild caught Alaskan and verlasso salmon. They strive to use local, organic, and seasonal vegetables when available. One thing we noticed, that really set them apart from other services, is that they are willing to work with their customers in customizing meals, which means if you have an allergy or another dietary restriction they are there to help. Not that we're saying other companies are inflexible, but some of their business models just don't allow for substitutions or omissions, so they may not work for everyone. You can call or email to talk with their staff of professional chefs to keep you safe and healthy! We found that to be especially appealing for people with very strict protocols. We have added a link to their pricing page, because they offer a lot of options, including ordering by the pound, and we thought it might be easier to view it as they have it neatly presented on their site instead of run-on sentences trying to explain!
SupperBell.com - Is another Colorado-based delivery service, with a familiar name at the helm, Chef Frank Bonanno. Many of you who live in and around the Denver-metro area may be familiar with his family of restaurants that include Luca, Mizuna, Bones, Osteria Marco, to name but a few. If you have ever eaten at any of them, you can see why we'd recommend this service from their Chef! They provide a filter feature for their menus that you can select from: gluten-free, nut-free, Paleo, vegetarian, Light'NFit, and dairy free. These filters can be applied across entrees, sides/salads, breakfasts, families, and kids. And speaking of kids, there's even something for the littlest ones! SupperBell offers their own line of baby food! Called Baby Fresh, they offer 4 stages of organic items ranging from purees to solids for babies 6 months to all ages. They work with many local and sustainable purveyors such as Seattle Fish Co., Polidori Sausage, The Spice Guy, and 5280 Culinary. Their pricing and ordering system reminds us of restaurant takeout just slightly, in that you can place your order day-of (by 3:00 p.m. local time), dishes aren't priced the same across board but rather a la carte, and are delivered later that day between a time-window pre-selected by the customer. There are no contracts and a low order minimum of just $10 with a $2.95 delivery fee in their delivery zone.
Finally, we came across a website and Facebook page for a new service called SimplyAIP. They haven't started delivery yet but will be launching their service this Spring (2018). They will be specializing in Autoimmune Protocol-friendly meals, treats and indulgences, which we are very excited to check out! Their Facebook page is already chock-full of information, recipes and blog links. We highly recommend you check them out, very informative! There tends to be a real sense of community amongst AIP'ers and we expect their pages to be no different. They also currently have an email sign up on their webpage so you can be on their list for grand opening information and notifications. We think they're going to be a tremendous new resource for those following the AIP protocol!
In all, we are really excited these services exist and strongly recommend doing your own research to see which fits your specific needs and budget. We know that changing your diet, or following a strict protocol every day, can be stressful and intimidating for most people, especially at first. Even if you don't use a meal delivery service 7 nights a week, the times you may can certainly be a great jumping off point to learn about your new protocol, the ins and outs, and get some future meal inspirations for when you are feeling more comfortable and confident in your protocol. We are huge proponents of saving time and remaining as stress-free as possible and these services are right up our alley. Imagine the time you can reserve for other pursuits to enhance your health such as going to the gym, taking a yoga class or meditation. Certainly makes cooking sound a little less appealing when there are convenient, healthy and reliable options like these!

Why is 2019 the Year of the Pig? How the Chinese zodiac’s 12 animals were chosen
“According to legend, the heavenly Jade Emperor wanted to segment time into cycles of 12 years with an earthly animal guarding each cycle. He sent word that the fastest animals to reach the Heavenly Gate would be chosen, ranked accordingly and have a year in the cycle named after them. Sensing an opportunity, the animals raced against each other to win the emperor’s favour.
The goat, monkey and rooster arrived after crossing the river on a raft they had built together, taking eighth, ninth, and 10th places respectively. The dog was a late 11th having stopped to enjoy a bath in the river, and the pig, who had stopped for a nap, sauntered in for the 12th, and final, place. There are many versions of the legend but they all agree the rat made sure the cat did not finish the race by either tricking him into sleeping through the event or by pushing him into the river. Due to the rat’s treachery, the cat failed to finish and was not recognised in the zodiac. Naturally, the cat never forgave the rat and Chinese legend holds this to be why they are natural enemies.”

Watermelon-fed, $350 chickens in diapers bring the farmyard to the Bay Area
“According to a new report that credited the Mercury News with spotting the emerging Silicon Valley backyard-chicken trend back in 2015 — before it was co-opted by wealthy poultry-poseurs.“In the Bay Area — where the nation’s preeminent local food movement overlaps with the nation’s tech elite — egg-laying chickens are now a trendy, eco-conscious humblebrag on par with driving a Tesla,” the Washington Post reported last week. These days, Bay Area chicken-wrangling hobbyists are spending as much as $350 for a bird, $20,000 for a high-tech coop and $225 an hour for a “chicken whisperer” consultant...“It’s not uncommon here to see chickens roaming in their owners’ homes or even roosting in bedrooms, often with diapers on.”
”As might be expected from chickenists and chickenistas in the tech capital of the universe, housing backyard birds here is often not a matter of hammering together scrap lumber and metal screening. Coops may feature solar panels, automatic doors and “video cameras that allow owners to check on their beloved birds remotely.” A Redwood City chickeneer told the paper he used an app on his smartphone to control his coop’s temperature, ventilation and lighting. The man is fond of sharing videos of his birds, and particularly recommends the bed-time action when they “jostle for position before settling down.”
“Pampering, naturally, is called for...gives him a weekly bath, followed by a blow dry “which he LOVES”...“Despite their relative privilege, even these chickens are circled by predators like hawks, coyotes, raccoons and bobcats”...And there can be hazards specific to chickens living in wealthy enclaves. One “beloved” bird ventured into a Marin County backyard pool, with fatal consequences.”

Silkie Chicken: All You Need To Know
“It is believed by some that the Silkie dates back as far as the Chinese Han Dynasty, in 206BC. The Chinese name for the Silkie is wu-gu-ji – meaning black-boned. An alternative name for this bird is the Chinese Silk Chicken...It was first mentioned by Marco Polo (around 1290-1300) on his remarkable journey across Europe and the Far East. Although he did not see the bird, it was reported to him by a fellow traveler and he reported it in his journal as “a furry chicken”.The Silkie made its way westward either by the Silk Road or by the maritime routes, likely both.”
The next mention we have is from Italy where Aldrovandi in 1598 speaks of a chicken that has “fur like a black cat”. When the Silkie was first introduced to the European public it was said to be the offspring of a chicken and a rabbit – a not so unbelievable thing back in the 1800s! Many unscrupulous sellers sold Silkies to gullible folks for curiosity and it was used as a ‘freak show’ item in travelling side shows and exhibited as a ‘bird-mammal’.”
”They have oval shaped turquoise blue earlobes and dark colored wattles. Their beak is short, quite broad at the base, it should be grey/blue in color. Eyes are black. As for their body, it should be broad and stout, the back is short and the breast is full. They have five toes instead of the usual four found in chickens. The outer two toes should be feathered. The legs are short and wide set, grey in color.
Their feathers lack barbicels (those are the hooks that hold the feathers together), hence the fluffy appearance. The main feathering looks just like the under-down of regular chickens. The fact that the feathers do not hold together means a Silkie cannot fly. It also means that the feathering is not waterproofed and so a wet Silkie is a pathetic sight to see. If they do get significantly wet, they need to be towel dried or even blow dried – which they enjoy if it is done on a regular basis.”
“As for their temperament, silkies are known to be calm, friendly and docile – even the boys. It has been recorded by several people that the roosters will ‘tid-bit’ for the chicks! This docility can lead to them being picked on by other more ‘pushy’ flock members.
Despite their fluffy feathering they do tolerate the cold fairly well – wetness is something they cannot tolerate. If your climate is very cold in the winter, they would benefit from a little supplemental heat. They are content to be confined, but if allowed to free range are great little foragers. The area in which they forage should be a ‘safe zone’ since they cannot fly to escape predators. Silkies are more renowned as being pets, brooders and ‘ornamental’ birds...Silkies are quite robust and will usually live for 7-9 years, longer with lots of TLC!”
”A Silkie is the ultimate in kids’ chickens. They are cuddly, fluffy and tolerant, love sitting in your lap and even enjoy cuddles. They are a very friendly, calm and docile bird and interact very well with people – they will follow you around and ‘talk’ to you. This docility can lead to them being picked on by more aggressive flock members, so try to keep an eye open for bullying.
Silkies are notoriously broody – the standing joke is that a Silkie can hatch a rock! They also make great mothers. Many folks keep Silkies in order to hatch out other eggs. A Silkie in ‘broody mode’ will usually accept any and all eggs (including duck) placed under her. If you live in an apartment and want to have chickens as pets, the Silkies are a very good fit since they are pretty quiet too.”
”The Silkie chicken always brings a smile to peoples’ faces. This ‘odd-ball’ and slightly unusual bird is certainly a crowd pleaser! Although they won’t keep you in eggs, they will supply you with lots of love, smiles and cuddles. When they become bonded to their owners they can be described as ‘dog-like’ in their devotion. They will follow you, talk to you, check out what you are doing and ‘help’ too!...All in all, these funny little birds are a joy to have and give much pleasure to their owners.”

What is "silke"
“n. (obsolete spelling of silk English)”
silk (n.)
“ c. 1300, from Old English seoloc, sioloc "silk, silken cloth," from Latin sericum "silk," plural serica "silken garments, silks," literally "Seric stuff," neuter of Sericus, from Greek Serikos "silken; pertaining to the Seres," an oriental people of Asia from whom the Greeks got silks...Chinese si "silk," Manchurian sirghe, Mongolian sirkek have been compared to this and the people name in Greek might be a rendering via Mongolian of the Chinese word for "silk," but this is uncertain. Also found in Old Norse as silki.”
Lavender Japanese bantams
Japanese Bantams
“Japanese (or Chabo) Bantams are real show birds and go back a long way in history. It is thought that they first arrived in Japan from China in the early 1600’s when they started to appear in Japanese paintings. In Japan, they are called “Chabo” which means “bantam” or “dwarf” in Japanese but is also the old Japaneses name for South East Asia. They are thought to have reached the UK in the 1860’s.”
”They are a true bantam which means they don’t have large fowl counterparts and are very distinctive with very short legs and very long straight vertical tail feathers with a relatively large comb and wings that are held low, touching the ground. Japanese Bantams should be kept inside on clean, dry bedding in all but the best weather to maintain good feather condition. Feathers (especially white) will stain easily on the wing tips that drag on the floor if let out in the wet.”

5 Reasons to Love Sebright Chickens
“Sebright chickens are unique and exotic looking ladies with sweet temperaments and a penchant for curiosity. In the early 1800s Sir John Sebright - a member of the British Parliament and avid animal keeper - set out to create his vision of the perfect chicken. The resulting fantastically feathered fowl was the Sebright bantam and these small but perfectly formed birds became popular with highfalutin poultry fanciers across the British isles and beyond.
Sebright chickens are a sight to behold and a wonder to watch. These pretty birds, with their wonderfully patterned plumage and delicate features, make an exotic and unique addition to any backyard flock. Sebright chickens have small and compact bodies with short backs and prominent breasts, sporting perfectly preened gold or silver almond shaped feathers that are delicately laced with bold iridescent black...If you are looking for a backyard chicken to admire, the Sebright chicken is a mesmerising choice.”
“Not all bantam chickens are created equal. Bantam breeds can be categorized into two types - true and miniature standard. Miniature standard bantams are chickens that have been bred to be smaller versions of their larger chicken breed namesakes but true bantams have been developed as unique breeds that have no standard sized counterparts. Sebright chickens are one of the oldest recorded true bantam chickens and these adorably small birds are often a favourite with exhibitors and hobby keepers due to their unique appearance. The Sebright bantam diminutive size and distinct colouration and patterning make them a delightful and space saving spectacle to have in your flock. If you have a small backyard, Sebright chickens truly are the chicken of choice.
While some poultry enthusiasts keep a backyard flock as a source of fresh eggs, there are those who insist no coop is complete unless it’s full of fancy fowl to admire. If you are looking for a chook that will give your chicken run an exotic feel, the Sebright chicken is just right. These avant garde girls shouldn’t be relied upon to provide a regular bounty of eggs - they are more interested in foraging and curiously eggs-ploring their backyard kingdom than laying... Not only individuals in their looks, Sebrights are keen to stand out in the crowd when it comes to temperament and behaviour too. Given the opportunity, these fiercely independent chickens go off the beaten path, strutting self-importantly through the garden and preferring to roost in trees when the sun sets on their day. To ensure the Sebright chickens’ freewheeling nature is safely contained it is necessary to have a tall fence or secure chicken run, as these hens are quite skilled flyers.”
“If you want to keep a small flock of pretty and playful birds the Sebright is a great choice. These beautiful bantams prefer the company of one or two chicken friends and while independence is important to the Sebright chicken, that doesn’t mean they are cold hearted! Sebrights are well known for being sweet and inquisitive birds. True, they are not as cuddly...but these girls are unassumingly friendly, giving out enough love but never cramping your style. If you’re not one to smother your pets in kisses, but still enjoy delightful interaction on a daily basis, the Sebright is the perfect pet for you. Much like any shy chook, you can establish a firm bond with Sebrights by giving them some delicious mealworms or other tasty treats. They will delight in receiving gifts from their keeper but unlike other breeds, Sebrights won’t overwhelm you every time you walk out your backdoor.
The Sebright is not interested in raising baby chicks or anything associated with motherhood. Why sit on a nest all day when you can be egg-sploring the garden and quietly roosting on out of the way branches? Heaven to a Sebright is a day free of parental responsibilities, an open schedule to fill with whatever takes their fancy...Sebright chickens are perfect poultry pets for a keeper who is as happy to admire their girls in the garden as they are to interact with them. Sebright chickens are a breed with personality and need a coop with character. If you’re thinking of starting your own flock of sweet Sebright bantams be sure that they have a secure and safe space in which to egg-splore.”

11 Doggie Mansions That Will Make You Re-Evaluate Your Life Choices
“This Victorian-style doggie mansion cost a cool $20,000 to build. It’s home to three fabulous dogs, Chelsea, Darla, and Coco Puff. The home is a smaller version of the owner’s historic Victorian home. She commissioned the project after an owl almost kidnapped one of her Pomeranians. The structure is large enough that she can enter and visit her canine neighbors.”

Housing Your Pigs
“There are many options when it comes to the way that you house your pigs. There is no right way or specific materials that you must use. You can be as creative as you imagine or as simple as you wish. Be sure to incorporate things such as toys or other items for enrichment to ensure happy and active pigs...Shelters should be free from extreme drafts and protect from rain and sun. They should allow enough space for your pig/pigs to turn around and comfortably stretch if necessary. If pigs are housed in multiples, you should have enough shelters for each individual pig or the shelter used should be large enough for multiple pigs needs.”

Fertility Diet Guidelines
It is imperative to follow the fertility diet guidelines set forth below in order to increase fertility to its optimal state which will help you to get pregnant much faster.
1. Eat a variety of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Conventional fruits and vegetables contain many harmful pesticides and herbicides that have been shown, through research, to negatively impact both female and male infertility. Studies show conclusively that organic produce have much higher nutritional value and substance.
2. Eat only organic, grass-fed, raw, whole-fat dairy products. Eating only organic dairy is the optimal choice. However, dairy foods such as cheese and milk may contribute to congestion and inflammation within the body. PCOS and Endometriosis may aggravate the imbalance. Pay close attention to how your body handles it. It’s necessary to avoid any dairy that is not organic as it contains added antibiotics and hormone that can contribute to increased estrogen levels in the body. There are plenty of healthy dairy alternatives such as almond, soy or hemp milk.
3. Eat mostly cold water fish. Fish supplies necessary essential fatty acids like omega 3 to our diet. Fatty acids aid in the production of hormones, reduce inflammation in the body and help to regulate the menstrual cycle. Fish is an excellent source of vitamin A and protein. Avoid deep water fish such as swordfish, ahi tuna and Chilean sea bass due to hazardous concentrations of mercury. Focus on eating cold water fish such as Cod, Alaskan Halibut and wild Alaskan Salmon. Avoid North Atlantic farm-raised Salmon and choose wild Salmon as an alternative. Farm-raised Salmon contains both food dyes and antibiotics.
4. Choose grass-fed, organic meats only. Conventionally raised cattle contain antibiotics and hormones which can contribute to conditions that thrive on estrogen dominance. Grass-fed meats are an excellent source of essential fatty acids, protein and they are also low in saturated fats. If you have endometriosis, you may want to limit the amount of red meat that you consume.
5. Choose only free range, organic chicken. Conventionally raised chicken is packed with harmful antibiotics and hormones which can be detrimental to hormone levels. When shopping for chicken, but only the kind that says “cage-free” or “organic.” The best chicken to purchase will come from a local farmer who offers free range for their birds.
6. Eat only whole grains. Whole grains are packed with vitamins, fiber and immune supporting properties. Fiber is essential to help the body to reduce excess hormones which will help keep blood sugar levels balanced. Avoid any process, refined white foods and grains such as semolina pastas, breads and white rice. Instead, opt for whole wheat or sprouted breads, rice, pasta and quinoa.
7. Eat foods that are high in fiber with every meal. Fiber will help to regulate blood sugar levels which will reduce fertility issues like PCOS and immunological disorders. Examples of high fiber foods are vegetables, fruits, beans and dark leafy greens such as Kale.
8. Avoid soy products unless it is fermented such as tempeh and miso. Soy has been shown to contain estrogen mimicking properties. Avoid soy milk, burgers, chips, meats, protein powder and cheese. If you suffer from hypothyroidism, avoid soy altogether.
9. Avoid all refined sugars and fruit juices unless it is freshly squeezed. Pasteurized juices like apple and orange contain lots of concentrated sugars which can elevate blood sugar levels and negatively impact your immune system. Avoid all processed, refined and artificial sugar substitutes. Some healthy alternatives are honey and maple syrup.
10. Drink plenty of clean, filtered water. Each day, drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of purified, filtered water. Avoid bottled water that comes in plastic. The best water to choose from are distilled and reverse osmosis. Avoid tap water at all costs.
I highly recommend supplementing your diet with a fertility smoothie. Superfood smoothies are an excellent way to support both men and women with their fertility diet. Smoothies help to bridge the gap for healthy pre-conception, balanced nutrition. Fertility smoothies are a fantastic way to get antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fertility superfoods into your diet.
If you follow these fertility diet guidelines each day, you will increase your chances to get pregnant much faster or you can also visit fertility clinic Mumbai

Why the fuck do vegans/vegetarians lie?
What I really don’t get is those PETA-type people who straight up lie to get people on their side.
And I’m not saying all vegans and vegetarians are liars, I’m talking about those people who insist shit like “oh did you know that sheep are murdered to make wool?”
How the fuck...? Like I honestly don’t understand the logic. If you disagree with the use of animal products, fine, that’s on you, and feel free to inform people of why you made your choice, BUT DON’T FUCKING LIE! Especially since this information is so easily fact-checked! What’s the point?!
I grew up in a farm town. I’ve seen how chickens and rabbits are butchered for meat (spoiler alert, it’s humanely), how goats and cows are kept for dairy (again, humanely), and how fruits and vegetables are harvested (not humanely).
More under the cut, because this is a long fucking rant.
Growing up in that farm town, and as a member of the FFA for a number of years, two similar phrases got tossed around a lot that are straight up true. “Cruelty doesn’t taste good” and “Cruelty doesn’t sell”. There’s a reason that the expensive eggs and super-pricey meats taste far better than the cheaper alternatives; you’re paying for the pampering of the animal during it’s life.
Grass fed beef is more expensive than beef given a premixed feed, because it’s super expensive to keep cattle on a large enough plot to allow them to graze safely and properly AND have their diets supplemented to ensure their health and well being. Free range chicken eggs are pricey because you need to ensure the cleanliness of the coop/nest boxes for the flock AND ensure that there are safety measures in place to both keep predators away from the flock and keep the flock from escaping and getting injured or killed, not to mention keep the flock from tearing themselves apart (the phrase “pecking order” comes from chickens; even healthy, happy, spoiled and pampered chickens will literally attack and rip the feathers out of their fellow chickens to establish “the pecking order”, sometimes drawing blood and doing serious damage).
Now I buy grass fed beef and free range eggs, because I want to support the highest standard of animal husbandry when my food is involved, and I absolutely respect my fellow human’s decision to not eat any animal products, but not when it’s because of some fucking lies.
So let me clear some shit up.
1) Dairy cattle aren’t inseminated over and over and over to ensure milk production. That would kill the animal and result in a surplus of calves. You’re dumb if you think that. Dairy cattle are inseminated, monitored to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery, and the calf is either left with the mother until the mother stops producing colostrum, or some remove the calf and give it colostrum by bottle. Either way, the calf is allowed to be with the mother as it ages. The mother will be milked, daily, to protect her from life-threatening and debilitating infections from an unmilked udder. As long as you keep milking, the udder will keep producing milk until long after the calf has been weaned. All milk-producing breasts work that way, even human ones. You’re dumb.
2) Chickens don’t need giant fields to run around in. They’re not horses. They’re basically-flightless birds. When you see a handful of chickens in a 15x15 coop, that’s PLENTY of room. The rule of thumb is 2.5-3 sqft per bird of floor space, and the same inside the coop. They like being in their little corner and their little box, because they know it’s safe and free of predators. Chickens also don’t lament the loss of their eggs or chicks. If they did, the egg and chicken breeding industries wouldn’t exist. Broody hens, or hens that get defensive and aggressive when they have eggs/chicks, are just hens thinking you’re trying to kill or eat the eggs and chicks and are letting their instincts kick in. Calm the fuck down. All animals get uppity when you get near their babies, and most animals cut their losses when their babies are gone so they can make more babies.
3) Animals raised for meat (with the overt exemption of veal and stuff) aren’t slaughtered when they’re “young”. They’re just young by human standards. For example, a hog raised for meat can reach roughly 150-200lbs or more around 1 year of age or more! That seems young to you and me, and like pigs just grow fast, but the average lifespan of a human is WAY longer than the lifespan of a pig. Pigs reach sexual maturity between 3-12 months, and I’ve heard of domestic pigs living an average of between 6-10 years. So butchering a pig at age 3 isn’t cutting it down in it’s prime by any standard.
4) If you’re fucking inept and inbred enough to think that sheep are butchered for wool, then you deserve to never know the comfort of a wool blanket. Sheep are literally just buzz-cut for wool. They run around their whole life, eating and shitting, and then every once in a while they get shaved, then they run around and eat and shit some more. A sheep that isn’t shaved, or an unsheared sheep, will die from not being sheared. Their wool will grow and grow and grow until the animal can barely move, have shit caked on their butts, struggle with eating, and if they even just got tipped onto their sides, they wouldn’t be able to right themselves and would starve. God damnit.
5) Literal, real, breathing human beings are being mistreated and basically tortured 24/7/365 in order for us to have fruits and vegetables. Entire communities/countries are struggling because you fucks love quinoa so damn much. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, along with the rest of the UFW, are the reason human beings aren’t sprayed en mass with known cancer causing pesticides, and that shit only came around in the 60′s and 70′s. Who fucking knows how many thousands of people, including children, died horrific and painful deaths because nobody cared enough to allow them to avoid the spray? This is the real fucking problem with agriculture; the fact that human bodies are being throw into the fucking fire so you can lord your spinach-kale-acai-BULLSHIT over the rest of us like you’re some kind of savior and voice for the mute.
You want to make a difference? Make Cesar and Dolores proud. Fight for your fellow man. And if you think human beings don’t deserve better treatment than animals do, then when I see you in hell, I won’t even stop to say “hi”.

9 Huge Differences Between Free Range and Store Bought Eggs
I had never had a farm fresh egg until I actually raised chickens for myself. You may be thinking it is crazy to get chickens without at least testing their product first.
I mean, what if the eggs were different from store bought and in a bad way? What if I didn’t like them at all?
Well, I guess I would’ve lived and learned. Which is exactly what I did, surprisingly enough. Farm fresh eggs are very delicious, but I’ve learned a lot about the differences between those my chickens lay and those you find at the store.
Fresh Eggs vs Store Bought
Here are the differences between farm fresh eggs and store bought eggs:
1. Free Range Eggs
via Raising Free Range Chickens
Let’s begin this discussion by explaining what each type of egg actually means. Free range eggs are eggs produced by hens that are set outside of any cage and allowed to naturally forage for their food.
Now, they may be given supplemental food to make sure that they are consuming enough food, but for the most part, these hens are allowed to roam, forage, scratch, and peck the ground. This is a great thing for many reasons.
First, you don’t have a bunch of hens constantly living in nasty living conditions. If the hens are allowed out to free range, then they are only cooped up at night where they roost.
So even if they poop in their coop, they aren’t living in it for days on end.
Second, they are allowed to be birds. Chickens are meant to peck and scratch the ground. They are meant to forage for their food. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t know how to do it, naturally.
So because they have these qualities instilled in them at birth, you know that allowing them to carry out these behaviors is what is natural for them. Which means their eggs will be produced like they were naturally designed to do. That is great because you want to consume natural foods if at all possible.
Finally, these birds are most likely happy. Happy birds lay more eggs and better quality eggs. The happier the hen, the better quality of food you are consuming.
2. Cage Free Eggs
Cage-free eggs is a tricky term that I’m not very fond of. I’m going to be upfront with you. I have friends that run chicken houses. I know that they are a lot of work. I also know that these people use this as a means to provide for their families.
So I’m not knocking people that run chicken houses for a living.
But I will say this, cage free is not free range. In most chicken houses in our areas, the chickens are not kept in cages.
Instead, they are inside large hoop-shaped chicken coops with concrete floors, automatic feeders and waterers, and lots of high roosts and nesting boxes. The people that run them work themselves to the bone, but there are just so many chickens in these chicken houses.
Usually, they have a hired hand that is responsible for making sure that the feeders are constantly working, the waterers are constantly working, and that the birds that die of disease or heat exhaustion are pulled out daily.
Obviously, cage free bird does not experience anywhere near the same quality of life as a free-range bird.
Again, I’m sharing the experiences I’ve seen in my area. This may not be true for every chicken house in the country.
Also, there will be some nutritional differences of these eggs as well. These birds will most likely not eat anything natural. I have a friend whose family runs chicken houses for a living. They are given the food that the companies they have contracts with want them fed.
Obviously, this will be pelleted food and nothing natural and green. Nor will this include bugs of any sort.
3. Regular Store-Bought Eggs
Regular store bought eggs are usually laid by birds that are kept in small cages or the cage-free chicken houses. They are fed pelleted foods, live in extremely hot and crowded conditions, and do not live a natural lifestyle at all.
Again, the quality of the egg will suffer because of the nutrition and health of the birds.
4. You Are What You Eat
I’ve led up to this in my previous points, but we are what we eat, and our birds are what they eat. A huge difference between free range and store-bought eggs is the quality of the nutrients in the eggs because of the quality of the nutrients going into the chickens.
So if your birds are doing what they naturally do, which is pecking the ground, foraging for food, eating lots of leafy greens, and getting natural proteins from bugs, then you are probably going to have a better tasting egg.
Whereas a store-bought egg is usually produced by a chicken that is fed strictly pelleted foods which will not produce the same quality of egg, in my opinion.
5. Flavor
via The Quackalackin' Micro Farm
If you ask anyone who eats farm fresh eggs, they’ll tell you that the taste is not the same. I think farm fresh eggs have a much richer flavor.
Also, you’ll notice that the yolks are also a deeper yellow color. They look richer and healthier, but they taste that way too.
So if you are looking for a richer tasting egg, then you definitely need to shop with your local farmers or purchase a few hens for yourself.
6. Shelf Life
You may assume that all eggs have as short of a shelf life as what you are accustomed to running into at the grocery store.
In reality, most store purchased eggs were laid around 3 days before they made it to the store.
Then it depends on how fast the store gets them to the floor for you to buy as far as how old they are once they are on the shelf.
Finally, eggs can stay on a grocery shelf for around 30 days. So you really have no idea how fresh the eggs you are buying from the store actually are.
But when you purchase local eggs or raise your own chickens, then you can know how fresh the eggs are that you are eating.
7. Food Safety
Food safety is a huge reason to purchase eggs locally instead of from grocery stores. Salmonella was a huge concern not so long when there was a massive outbreak in some of the nation’s largest egg suppliers’ chicken houses.
Though chickens who have Salmonella don’t always show signs and some can simply be a carrier of the disease, which definitely won’t show any signs of the disease, it has been said that the living conditions of the chickens can cause this disease to spread amongst a flock.
So if you buy locally, the birds are free ranged and have healthy living conditions, then you greatly reduce your risk of contracting Salmonella. This is great news!
Also, you can physically go and see the living conditions of the birds, if you ask politely, so you can see where your food is actually coming from. This is one of the main reasons I love raising my own chickens.
I love the fact that I can interact with them daily. I know what they consume, their living conditions, I get to see them free ranging throughout my yard and pastures, and I have peace about what we are eating because I know I’ve done all I can to keep my birds happy and healthy.
Which in turn, should produce healthier food for myself and my family. That is all we can do at the end of the day, right?
8. Nutritional Value
via Carolina's Natural Health Center
Would you believe that the nutritional value of farm fresh eggs is different from those in the store?
Well, there is. You will find that farm fresh eggs have less of the bad stuff in them, like cholesterol and saturated fat.
Yet, they have more of the good stuff, like omega-3’s and Vitamins A, D, and E. It makes sense when you stop and think about it though.
If you consume eggs from a free range chicken that has eaten a healthy more natural diet and been given the opportunity to roam and exercise, then the bird is healthier and should pass that on to their eggs.
But if you purchase eggs that have been produced by hens that have little room to exercise and eat a processed diet, then that will show up in their eggs.
9. Overall Health of the Bird
Bottom line, if you care about your health, then you should begin to be more aware of where your food is actually coming from.
Until a few years ago, I kept blindly going to the grocery store. It was what I had always done so why question it?
Then I heard someone say, why would you put something in your body that you don’t even know where it came from, how it was raised, or what’s in it? I couldn’t answer that question. I thought, “Wow! I just blindly keep fueling my body with foods I don’t know anything about…actually. I only know what I’ve been told.”
So then I began researching some and saw the difference between the picture that was being painted on my egg cartons of chicken eggs that were produced ‘cage free’ and then the actual living conditions of the chickens that were producing these ‘cage free’ eggs. They were nowhere near the same.
In actuality, some of these birds are really mistreated. They have their beaks clipped, are forced to live in miserable conditions, are fed foods I certainly wouldn’t feed my own flock and are starved in order to induce molting.
Then I began raising my own chickens and saw how chickens were supposed to act, what they really needed, and what made chickens happy layers. I knew then that I had no business putting store-bought eggs into mine or my family’s bodies anymore. It just wasn’t natural.
Plus, I think it is wrong to treat any living creature in an inhumane fashion. Especially in the name of meeting production.
Again, I realize some of the smaller chicken house owners raise these birds to support their families, but I’ve also never personally met a chicken house owner in my area that starved the birds. I just know the living conditions are crowded, hot, and are unnatural for chickens to be living in.
So I hope this has helped you realize the difference between purchasing local free range eggs in comparison to purchasing store-bought eggs. This is a personal choice, and we are in no way trying to pressure you.
But I do think it is fair to share what we know and have learned through our own personal decisions to help you make a more informed decision.
Now, I want to know, do you buy local farm fresh eggs, raise your own eggs, or purchase from the grocery store? Why?
We love hearing from you so please leave us your comments in the space provided below.

Marmalade likes to get the vegetables when I cook, so once or a few times a day (depending on how willing she is or how heavy they are), she goes to the greenhouse and the root cellar with a list. The root cellar is within easy view of the cabin and once she left the door open. It was fine. Most of it was in jars, and we had some leftovers and several stored vegetables like cabbages and beets.
We have a planting cycle that gives us plenty to preserve, but we are always growing the things we preserve. Most of the preserves go to the Shelter, and we keep some for ourselves because we like them or in case something goes wrong with the greenhouse. Then we have a few different greenhouses or greenhouse-like structures. Our big greenhouse is on the pavilion we used for the wedding.
When Marmalade learned about the Earth’s atmosphere and the water cycle, we used the greenhouses as examples, instead of doing an experiment. She understands that the warm side has to be kept warm like summer and the cool side has to be kept cool like the spring or autumn. Sometimes we leave the door open, but it depends on the temperature, and Mark and I figure it out, not Marmalade. If the door is open when she goes in, she has to leave it open, and if the door is closed when she goes in, she has to close it on the way in and out. We have little floor space in the cabin and are strict about doors opening and closing, because they easily get in the way, and the animals don’t free-range and we have to be extremely strict about their doors and gates. We have a baby gate in the log cabin to keep Lad and Lassie from crawling into the fire, and it is considered a door for all intents and purposes.
We are not very strict unless it is about something truly dangerous.
We have two doors in the greenhouse. The warm side only has a door to the cool side, and the cool side has the entrance door. We grow very heat-dependent crops like tomatoes and okra on the warm side, and it hovers around 70 to 80 degrees (cooler than we want, but the plants do okay). The cool side is about 50 to 60 degrees F. Both sides have ventilation. The warm side partially heats the cool side as the plastic between them conducts the heat. If somebody leaves the cool side door open, it probably won’t kill the plants on either side or make them bolt unless they were ready to.
A few weeks ago, Marmalade left the door to the greenhouse open, and the only things that could have survived are the Russian and Siberian kales, the garlic, and scarlet runner beans. Mark hates the Russian and Siberian kale on principle, and he is almost disappointed Marmalade didn’t kill them. The exterior door was open for about thirteen hours, and it is on the cooler side. We grow things like lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage there.
Hot air rises and cool air sinks. The outside door let in a lot of cool air, which forced the hot air towards the vents, which let it out. Slowly, the greenhouse filled with cold air.
Marmalade shut the door when she went there the next morning and I don’t know what the temperature was. She didn’t tell us the door was open, she tried to make me procrastinate planting seeds, and she tried to convince me she could do the planting by herself.
If she told us she had left the door open, she would not have been in as much trouble. We might have been able to lessen the damage if we knew at breakfast instead of after lunch. Some plants might survive light frost and their production could have dipped, but they might not have, and sometimes their flavors would improve after being frozen.
Mark planted lots of peppers and things for me last year for Christmas, and he was very pleased that they germinated, grew, and produced food. He was very disappointed they died. He and I planted hundreds of seeds that were supposed to last several months and would be replaced with new fully-grown plants. I spend several hours weekly harvesting vegetables and replanting them, and Mark helps when he has time. I plan the rotation, amounts of vegetables, save the seeds, cook with the plants, and preserve them.
This is how we get food. We could buy it, but we like doing it this way. We preserve and store food because eventually, something will go wrong with the garden, or I will want to just open a jar of something for supper instead of cooking, or there will be a family crisis and we won’t plant and so a few weeks later, we will run out of food.
Our animals eat normal animal food supplemented heavily with vegetables, plants, seeds we didn’t need, and the like, depending o their biology. Aside from food being the best way to keep the goats still on the milking stand, how the chickens like pecking at cabbages hung on a piece of twine, and the rabbits eat cutely, none of them will produce food well if they are not fed well-balanced diets. If something went wrong with the normal animal food (especially if we didn’t notice until it was too late, which is a definite possibility), they would still have the pasture, but they would need more food. Leaving the door open potentially harmed them as much as it potentially harmed us.
We didn’t tell Marmalade we could buy food if everything died. She probably knows we could, but she hasn’t mentioned it. We told her God willing, if the raccoons don’t break in, and if she doesn’t leave the door open for the animals or the frost, we can live on the preserved food and the unharmed greenhouses until the pavilion greenhouse produces again.
We had to demonstrate how much damage she caused by leaving the door open.
The best, safest preserves and the longest storage times come from the freshest produce, and if none of the plants survived, we did not want to refrigerated them until the foliage looked bad. If we waited, we would have none. The weather wasn’t right for freezing them, it isn’t how to freeze vegetables anyway, and we needed to restart the cycle as soon as possible.
Marmalade and I harvested until 10:00 PM that day, and preserved from about 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM, with breaks for meals, until everything was harvested, stored/put up, and pulled up, and the greenhouse is composted, the crops rotated (might as well have a major one while there is nothing in it), and replanted. She has to help replant according to schedule until we are back in the cycle, and she has to help preserve until we have the inventory we had before.
She, Mark, and I had a very long talk about how long it takes to starve to death, and about things like calories. We don’t focus much on calories, especially around the kids. I think if we adults didn’t have much manual labor and the kids didn’t play outside so much, and I had more time for baking or making things like soda, we would be fat. Also, we almost did not show her what starving people looked like, but she wanted to know and we found some detailed photos that did not show the other events that typically surround starvation, like total war and cannibalism, and we didn’t give her much context, until she asked why they were starving and we tried to vaguely explain it.
She knows cannibalism exists because once I made a joke to the chickens when I gave them some chicken meat and from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That was a fun conversation to have with. (I’m being sarcastic. It was one of the most difficult things to explain, so I didn’t mention people do it. I said some animals did it sometimes and it was socially acceptable with chickens. Ish. As far as anything animal-related can be in today’s society. In farming society, it is generally considered fine. I am very glad she didn’t ask if we would have to become cannibals and we definitely wouldn’t need to.
Mark and I made sure Marmalade knew we wouldn’t starve, because we had put up food. We told her it might be monotonous for about three months, and our fruits and vegetables would run out after about three months. We said there was a possibility our vegetables wouldn’t grow, although we explained how it was extremely unlikely. Some of them take longer than three months to produce, but most produce after about two or three months, but if the seedlings failed, it would take longer. When the fruits and vegetables ran out, we would have foraged food, dried goods (like beans, peas, lentils, wheat, corn, rice, barley, rye, and sugar), baked goods, soda, jam, syrup, honey, lard, isinglass eggs, aged cheese, and of course rabbits, milk from the goats, and the few eggs chickens produce in the winter. That would make it difficult to stretch the dry goods until the autumn harvest, and if we ate the summer eggs and milk instead of preserving it, we wouldn’t have enough to last the winter. By then, we would have enough vegetables and dry goods, but she needs a lot of eggs and milk and it would be difficult to save up enough through the summer for the next winter.
Mark and I plan ahead for accidents because we know about things like the Irish Potato Famine, the Dust Bowl, and obviously the continental collision, and we try to prevent mini versions of the Irish Potato Famine and the Dust Bowl happening to us. We had to check the greenhouse regularly during the stupid winter storm because the snow could collapse the plastic. More likely, everybody will come down with the flu and us adults will miss a weekly planting, or the birds eat all of the seeds, or it will be a long winter and we will have to plant the crops in June instead of May. That isn’t being careless. When one cabbage went moldy and I only noticed when the rest of the cabbages went moldly, I was careless and I had to replant all of the cabbages that were ruined. Inexperience is also fine, but we learn from it--when Mark’s canning wasn’t air tight he learned minor ways to to prevent spoilage. Or we have an accident and figure out ways to prevent it from happening again, like when the raccoons broke into the root cellar, we got a different kind of lock (then another and another), and when the raccoons began to treat our vegetables like Denny’s, and they came into season, we ate about ten raccoons and haven’t had a raccoon problem since. We have been waging war on the possums, too, but we don’t have a limited hunting season for them.
Being careless on a homestead is dangerous, and Marmalade knew better than to leave the door open.
Along with working to repair the damage, she could not watch movies or except for daily independent reading read books by herself, or listen to audio books or music, until all of the work was done (unusual because I know when you have to can a load of peas, it is much more fun if you can watch a movie while shelling them), and could not play until all of the work was done (if she has energy to play, she has energy to work). She still cannot watch movies, read books by herself, or listen to audio books or music until she does the daily gardening with us and all of her morning chores or during her other chores, and ditto at any point when the plants begin producing and we can preserve them, until we are caught up.
She cannot leave or enter any of the buildings or use the doors without supervision (ANY--even the privy) until further notice, and she cannot go near any of the greenhouses without permission and supervision until further notice. She cannot touch the greenhouse doors or other openings. Until we catch up with the preserving and storing, she has to help with it.
But along with learning the consequences, she will learn plenty of new skills, or develop ones she vaguely knows. Now she can count so well she might understand square foot planting better. She will become much better at remembering cooking measurements. Of course, she can’t do some things like move things in and out of the pressure canner, but she will be there for the whole process.
Because the produce is what we will have for further notice, gentle handling of it is extremely important, and if she is rough, she will get in more trouble. I always bruise food when I am in a hurry to store it, and bruised food rots easily, which can rot the entire container.
Mark and I are normally laid-back parents, and this is a very harsh punishment for us. We don’t like doing it. We don’t like punishing our kids at all. We told her that, and that we still loved her and we forgave her, and that it was one of the things she should repent for, ask for forgiveness for, and reform her behavior. If she feels like she did something wrong, or something wrong is happening around her, we want her to tell us right away so we can figure out a solution before the problem gets out-of-hand and we can help her sooner so she does not have to worry anymore. This is probably the worst accident our kids could have short of blowing themselves/each other up, burning down the house, or texting/drinking and driving.
Also, making her fix her mistakes and going back to finish work definitely isn’t unprecedented. She cleans her room, I inspect it, and make her go over the places she missed or didn’t do a good job with, like my mom did with me. If she makes a mistake in school, she has to at least try to fix it. If she legitimately can’t do something, that’s fine, and we work on whatever it is until she can. Normally, the skill development isn’t as urgent or fast-paced. We prefer to teach her at her own speed, as long as she isn’t dawdling on purpose or not paying attention for some reason.
Somehow, Mark has managed to avoid referencing Monsters Inc. He said he didn’t want Marmalade to point out Sully was right and use it as an argument in her defense.

sorry if this is dumb or already been asked but where do zoos get the stuff they feed to animals? do they go to butcher shops to feed predators? could they have a fruit tree as part of an animal habitat for the animals to help themselves to?
It’s a great question! Zoos get different parts of their diets from all over - and often, parts of what they feed out will come directly from the local community!
The foundation of what most zoo animals eat is actually commercially produced diets. Just like you can go pick up a bag of dog food, you can order nutritionally complete biscuits for herbivores or logs of ground meat for the carnivores. There’s actually a super wide range of different options: you can find banana-flavored gel diets for primates that help increase liquid consumption, pelleted food for birds that are highly sensitive to iron content, and even powdered meals for sharks and crocodilians that can be reconstituted with water in case they’re sick and need to be tube-fed. The same companies also make vitamins and supplements in appropriate doses for various exotic animal species. Zoos will buy fish and frozen feeder animals (such as rats or chicks for snakes) in bulk from commercial distributors.
Past those basics, it starts to vary! A lot of facilities do try to grow at least some of their own food, although they don’t do it actually in the animal exhibits simply because the plants would get chewed on / dug up / messed with long before the produce could finish growing. What zoos grow can range from some herbs in a small enrichment garden to all the hay the entire animal collection needs each year.
A lot of zoos get the browse (leafy forage) for elephants and other herbivores from partnerships with their city or local tree-trimming companies! They’ll separate out and collect limbs pruned off of the specific tree species the animals like, and bring them directly to the zoo. Bamboo for pandas is often also sourced from the community: zoos will have relationships with places like golf courses that have huge stands of bamboo for aesthetic purposes, and they’ll rotate which places they take cuttings from so that no area is over-pruned at any one time.
Local butchers are absolutely part of sourcing zoo diets! They’re the best place to get raw bones for carnivores (and those are more than just treats - meaty bones are fed out on “fast days” for species like large felids). Sometimes restaurants will donate unused meat for zoo carnivores: there’s a zoo in North Carolina, for instance, that gets the trimmings from a local steakhouse. Whole animals for carcass feedings with carnivores generally come from partnerships with local farmers or 4-H groups, and I know of at least one zoo that allows community members to donate deceased livestock (through a partnership with a veterinarian who knows how to euthanize animals in ways that make them safe for consumption).
(A lion at the Oregon Zoo pulls at a calf during a carcass feed).
Community relationships are also a great source of seasonal produce, like giant pumpkins for fall festivals or Christmas trees (which are not for eating) in winter.
(Elephants at the Oregon Zoo with giant pumpkins from a local business)
One of my favorite stories that I’ve heard is about sloths: because they love flowers and they’re actually approved as part of their diet by vet staff, keepers would bring blooms in from their gardens for them. Flowers are expensive to buy and take effort to grow, so they’re not always commonly available - but they’re free if they grow in a keeper’s garden.

What is the Best Feed for Chickens in Summer?
Serving your flock the best feed for chickens in the summer months makes a big difference. The feed you use will affect how they handle the stress of summer. Heat waves, moisture, humidity, and molting are all conditions that are part of summer. Feeding your flock properly, during the summer months sets them up for a healthy fall and winter.
Summer Feed Amounts
Naturally, your chickens will eat less grain in the summer months. This is normal because of a few factors. There are other things to eat, that taste better to a chicken than chicken feed. Bugs, weeds, grasses, and worms are plentiful tasty tidbits!
When ... What ... How much to feed?
Click here to learn more >>
In addition, as most of us lose a keen appetite during hot weather, the chickens will also eat less of a grain-based ration.
The Best Feed for Chickens in Summer is a High-Quality Feed Ration
Because your chickens will probably be eating less feed during the summer, it is important to feed a balanced, high-quality feed. When feeding chickens the best feed, you are guaranteeing they will have the nutrients needed to stay healthy.
Probiotics for chickens are another thing that can be added to ensure good health. Probiotics can be found in apple cider vinegar and fermented grains. Yogurt with live culture and Kifer are also good sources of natural probiotics. Be careful to not overdo milk products in your chicken’s diet. A little is helpful. A lot might cause digestive upset from the milk proteins. If I added only one item to the best feed for chickens, it would be fresh probiotic food supplements.
Nature's Balance Start-to-Grow
Designed to be the very best starter grower feed available. Should be fed free choice from hatch until pullets lay their first eggs. Find out why here >>
Do Free-Range Chickens Need a Purchased Chicken Feed Too?
In an effort to save costs while raising chickens, many people turn to free ranging and eliminating commercial feed. Free- range chickens do quite well without additional poultry feed, as long as the bird’s nutritional needs are met. This would require a variety of green plants and insects. Protein is a concern during the summer months as the chickens are getting ready to molt. Feeding plenty of protein leading up to molting will assist the chicken in growing new feathers.
In addition, feeding a calcium supplement is a good idea. This ensures that egg shells are strong and the birds are not depleting their calcium levels.
When choosing to not use a poultry feed during the summer, you need to be extra careful in observing the chicken’s condition. Weight loss, skin color, comb and wattle condition and egg shell quality are clues that show if the free range chickens are getting enough nutrients.
A safe feeding regimen could include limiting grain to morning or evening only and letting the chickens free range through the majority of the day. Each pasture, backyard, farm yard and chicken run will provide some nutrition. Being cautious and providing the best feed for chickens brings the best of both worlds together.
What to Not Feed to Chickens During the Summer
When people ask me about keeping chickens warm in the winter, I often reply that it’s more important to keep the birds cool in the summer. During the summer months, corn should be avoided. Scratch grain mixtures often contain a large amount of corn. Corn adds high carbohydrate levels to the chickens’ diet and carbohydrate energy releases heat. This can make the chickens feel hotter and suffer from the heat even more. Most of the time chicken owners are warned to not feed scratch grain containing corn during the summer.
Chickens love cooling treats like watermelon, ice blocks with frozen herbs, chilled chopped vegetables, and even frozen fruit popsicles. Mint is also a cooling plant and one that grows easily in most locations. The chickens can safely eat mint and mint also repels rodents and flies.
Other Tips for Summer Chicken Care
Provide cool, clean water at all times. Any discussion of what to feed chickens should include water. Water is the essential nutrient for all living creatures. Place the water bowl, bucket, or fount in a shady spot. If you don’t have natural shade from a tree or porch, hang a covering over a corner of the chicken run to provide shade. We use a tarp tied to the top rail of the chicken run fence.
Adding an inexpensive box style fan to the coop helps circulate and cool the air. We hang the fan in the doorway, positioned to send air through the coop to the back windows.
Reduce Wasted Feed and Deter Rodents
Of course, if you are feeding the best feed for chickens, you don’t want waste. One way to reduce waste is to use hanging feeders set to chest height on the chicken. This reduces feed that is scratched out of the bowls. Hanging feeders also reduce the incidence of rodents getting into the feeders. Clean up any spilled feed or scratched-out feed each day. This also reduces the rodents coming to the coop for a snack.
Pick up the feed at night and store it in a secure place. The chickens won’t eat during the night. Once the flock goes to roost, they don’t get up until morning light. As long as you can open the coop up early, there is no need to leave feed in the coop overnight.
Don’t over feed. Get an idea of how much the flock is consuming, adjust as needed. When I start to see feed left at the end of the day, I begin to adjust how much feed is given in the morning. When the bowls look like they were swept clean, I know it’s time to increase the feed amount.
Making simple adjustments, while choosing the best feed for chickens, will help your flock breeze through the hot summer months. As they begin to molt and grow in the winter down and new feathers, their bodies will be prepared because they had the proper nutrition during the summer.
What would you add to this discussion about best feed for chickens during summer? Let us know in the comments below.

On Fridays, I take my 5-year-old to Fox Walkers in Nevada City. I’m a homeschooler and I’m creating and foraging for classes that will teach him to appreciate Mother Earth and make friends from like-minded families. This class is out in the woods and teaches the 4 elements of earth and Native American ways. They do all sorts of great stuff like hike, track animals, analyze skeet, finding clay and making things (he tried making me a coffee cup, God bless that boy), sit around fires and sing, play drums, get dirty, build things out of sticks. Perfect for a boy. Arjan already has two friends named Oliver and Durin. He is learning the art of storytelling and singing. This is real school as far as I’m concerned.
We are a strange family, I’m part modern and get the itch to shop just like everyone else. The other side of my personality is green and sustainable, old-fashioned and crazy frugal. I’m conservative and a hippy tree hugger. I’m working on balancing this out. One thing I have made peace with is that I just can’t shop at the box stores or Walmarts any longer. They represent all the many things I find disappointing with this new age. Not to mention I feel I need a spiritual scrub down and exorcism each time I leave that store. There is a certain crowd that gathers at that watering hole and they scare me when I think the group represents modern times. Of course, there are the grandmothers and me that bring balance but there is only so much we can do.
I’m a Libra at heart and I love all that is lovely and quaint. I love the old Victorian because back then homes and products were made to last and made charming and sweet. Look at old homes with the details or the old parts of town that were made for walking and gathering. Old buildings shadowed by the ugly, cold steel and cement of the modern skyrise. So sad.
Anyway, let’s talk shop. I prefer the local health food coops for their cozy, wholesome and sustainable feel. I have found one in Grass Valley so when I drop Arjan off in the forest with his Fox Walkers group, Sammy and I go to the Briar Patch Coop and get our drinks, his cocoa, and my soy latte, and we do all the weeks shopping. I love the cozy lights, the smell of sprouts, yeast, and lavender, the healthy customers that look like they will be taking a morning hike after they purchase their carrots and granola.
Sammy and I explore new vegetables and find the best apples. I’m an apple connoisseur. We collected different colored and shaped pumpkins to decorate with. He gets a free banana or apple of his choice on the house and we have a produce man that is a celebrity to us since the boys saw his photo on the website. We love his french carrots and eat bags of them like a horse.
After the shopping that we go about like a tourist, we select delectables from the deli and bakery. When we’ve paid for all our goods we sit in the cafe by the window and dine together. Sammy and I discuss deep topics such as why one doesn’t put pepper on their lemon poppyseed muffin and that goes for salt as well. I attempt to read the San Francisco Chronicle that has made it all the way up there in the forest town. I am instantly disgusted and turn back to the discussion of the real purpose of salt and pepper. That is a much more satisfying topic. We then put the groceries in the truck and take a walk with our drinks to take pictures of fall foliage and walk a trail that leads to the local college and collect pine cones on the way.
This is a very fun time for us and we look forward to every Friday. Who would think that grocery shopping could be so lovable?
Now, shopping at the local health food store or coop can be very pricey. Everything is organic and natural and it ain’t easy growing food and making products without the aid of chemicals. It’s labor intensive. That is why it cost more. Read The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball and you’ll have a great appreciation for real food.
Why pay those crazy prices? Because food and products made organically means that nothing was poisoned and ruined and destroyed or killed beyond recognition with hideous poisons that are proven to cause cancers and other diseases that we are always “fighting”. This fight against cancer could be cut very short if we actually removed the root of the problem. For example, recently it has been determined that yes, Round Up causes cancer. You would think they would have a worldwide emergency round up of this Round-Up and ban it completely and promptly. No, they just put a small label on it so your dingy neighbor will probably still spray the hell out of his yard and the fumes and runoff will come into your healthy yard. Stupid. But let’s get out there in pink t-shirts and march against cancer. Hey, why don’t we march against corporate farming, Monsanto, and Round Up and similar chemicals? Would that be too forward?
When you pay the extra money you pay for healthy soil, clean water, clean air, healthy ecosystems, healthy birds, bees, and farm workers. You pay for no cancer and disease which saves you so much time, pain, money, doctors visits, and your families hardship in the end. Wow, put that way it seems like not that much to pay.
The other great benefit is that organic food, free range, grass fed, cruelty-free, old-fashioned farmed food tastes great!
I hear all the time “but when people are poor they just want to fill their bellies”. I get that and there are times you just can’t do all that organic and free-range feeding. However, when you eat real food loaded with nutrition, it does fill you up and you are less hungry. When you are eating dollar burgers or mac and cheese you are getting fatter but feel hungry all the time because your body isn’t getting any real nutrition to actually work with. That is another long health and nutrition dialogue and I am bored already.
Here is how you take that small coin purse or EBT card and make it happen. And yes, I have done the coop on an EBT card.
First, you join the coop because you will get discounts and can do a lot of wholesale bulk purchasing. You can volunteer a few hours now and then to get a 10% discount and they have sales all the time.
I joined for $10 every 6 months until I pay off $200. I just ordered some Quorn Turkey roast (faux turkey made out of mushrooms) in a case and saved so much. Usually, it’s $9.99 a roast but with the wholesale case and discount, I got it for around $5.55 a roast. You can order bulk beans, rice, flour and so on. You save 30% to 50% when it’s all totaled up.
Eating very clean helps. If you eliminate the snacks and healthy junk food you save. If you cook from scratch you save big time. I purchased tortillas out of sheer laziness the other day and it was $6 for a pack of those flour delights. I could make 3 packs for $1 at home. Lesson learned…again.
When you only buy rice, beans, flour, wheat, produce in season…you spend very little. You can buy bulk and choose the brown rice that is the least expensive. Pintos are the cheapest and think of all the bread and tortillas you can make from a 25 lb bag of flour and wheat. You can even make your own pasta easily. That’s next on my bucket list.
If you love your meat and eggs and dairy then get the loose eggs. Some stores have a bowl of eggs. You bring your own carton. Get whole chickens. A whole chicken can last a family a week. We don’t need to eat all that meat. In the old days and in other countries meat is a garnish, not the whole meal. Move over Adkins we need to de-clog that heart valve.
Dairy is not something I recommend. My son used to get all sorts of ear infections until I cut it out. Both my sons had chronic and mucusy colds all the winter long. Now they get sick a day in the Fall. Butter is a luxury. Use sparingly or learn to use vegetable stock or make your own bone broth from the leftover chicken carcass. This is for simmering.
You may say, “rice, beans, wheat? How boring?” No, no senora or senor or senorita! I can’t even list what you can do with these main items. Just get a bag of onions, tons of garlic and some olive oil and sea salt and you will be a chef in no time.
Potatoes. God, I love the spud. French fries (baked of course), baked, au gratin, casseroles, soups, hash browns, country fries…
I’ll write another blog on “what to do with boring foods”.
With produce in season, you can whip up amazing salads, snack on fruit. Eating with the seasons is more flavorful and smart. God knew what he was doing when he made oranges ripe in the winter. Baked squash and corn in the cold weather…yummy!
You can also start growing your own food and raise a few hens. That supplements. A fruit tree in the front yard? seeds and trees and hens are cheap and give you food for years. And that doesn’t get any more organic than that.
I’ll be back with more ideas and tips as I master this coop business.
How to do all your shopping at your local health food store on a tight budget. And why it’s a great idea. On Fridays, I take my 5-year-old to Fox Walkers in Nevada City. I'm a homeschooler and I'm creating and foraging for classes that will teach him to appreciate Mother Earth and make friends from like-minded families.
