Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries Ep. 4 and Season  1 recap
So, it’s over for now, folks.
After that little preview @journalist298 talked about I was kinda expecting Phryne Fisher to appear at her frontdoor, but I should have known better. I stand about what I said: Phryne Fisher will never make an appearance on this show. Even more, I don’t think there will be any kind of news of her disappearance, or of her friends (Jack, Dottie, Collins, Mac, Aunt P...) They are separate, different shows and if we want to enjoy it, we have to move on.
This episode was worse than the third episode. It felt boring at times, I think it was just too long. What the biggest part of the audience wants is more interaction between characters and less focus on the murder case. Shorter episodes would lend better to this purpose, but I think this format could work too if they just realised that the murder cases aren’t that interesting.
There are just too few secondary characters: Birdie is the best, Samuel and Violetta are okay, but they don’t really have character development, or any kind of plot apart from kissing on episode 2 and one being the tech guy and the other the scientist. And Fleur barely talks: give that woman some dialogue. Sparrow is hated by everyone, so it’s not like he counts.
I feel that they invest too much time on characters we only get to see for an episode and too little on permanent characters. I thought the Hungarian woman on episode 3 rocked, but we won’t be seeing anymore of her. What a shame.
I know I just said we have to move on, but on ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’ we had amazing secondary characters that had a lot more of screen time: Jack, Aunt P., Mac, Dottie, Constable Collins, Mr. Butler, Bert and Cesc, plus Phryne. That makes a total of nine characters, versus five characters on ‘Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries’.
And obviously, I think that the characters construction is much worse. All the characters in ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’ were funny in their own particular way. That’s something a miss a lot from this show: humour. The only character that has a sense of humour is Peregrine.
Plus, the Adventuress Club should be crowded with women, and they sometimes are shown on the background, but really, it feels empty because the only women there seem Birdie and Violetta. You have the perfect excuse to have more secondary characters, so use it.
Of course Birdie, Violetta and Samuel would have to show up to interrupt James and Peregrine’s moment. I knew they are goint to try to stretch their UST as long as possible, I just feel there isn’t a convincing reason. They both like each other, are single and don’t seem to have incompatible lifestyles or lifeviews (as Jack and Phryne did until they didn’t). I don’t mind suffering because of the UST, but it has to be credible (so Jack and Phryne didn’t like each other at first, then they started to but Jack was married, then Jack wasn’t married anymore but Phryne kept having multiple dalliances that Jack felt he couldn’t ask her to give up... You know what I mean).
And I had hoped that Sparrow would go down, but I was wrong. Not only he hasn’t, they have given up all their leverage (why couldn’t they make a copy?). He’s an awful person.
I guess I’m a little disappointed. The show was OK, and episode 3 was GOOD. It has great potential but I think they are not exploiting it the way they could.
What are your thoughts about this episode/the season?
