you huff as hyunjin takes the poorly wrapped box out of your hands, unfolding the crumpled and lumpy wrapping paper. he lays it on the counter, trying to flatten it out as much as he can before placing the small box in the middle of it, neatly wrapping it the way he wants it done.

“i don’t know why we’re bothering to wrap it.” you say with a pout, crossing your arms across your chest. “jisung is just going to rip it to shreds anyway.”

hyunjin pinches your left cheek, laughing as you try to swat his hand away from your face. “isn’t ripping it to shreds half the fun of opening a present?”

“you know what else is fun? a gift bag.”

grabbing the roll of clear tape, hyunjin lightly throws it at your head. you laugh as you dodge it, picking it up off the ground to return the attack. it’s annoying how easily he catches it, picking up where he left off with a playful smile.

the two of you had spent the better part of the late afternoon/evening decorating the kitchen for a mini surprise party for jisung. with how busy your schedules all are, and how many people want to celebrate him, tonight was the only time the three of you were guaranteed to have alone. the party was hyunjin’s idea — every last detail was picked out by him, from the balloons to the flavor of cheesecake, he took great care to make sure that your shared boyfriend would love the small party thrown in his honor.

and you were fine with him taking the lead; hyunjin threw phenomenal parties (all four years of undergrad were proof enough), and when you saw they way his eyes sparkled when he pitched the idea to you, too excited to speak slowly, you couldn’t possibly deny him of this.

so you let him drag you from party store to party store, finding every perfect decoration as you held the small velvet box in your lap.

the garage door opened right as you were attempting to put the twenty third candle on the cake. hyunjin grabbed your arm, pulling you to the ground behind the island counter. the poor candlestick flew across the kitchen, rolling and finding a new home under the fridge.

“hyunjin!” you whine, giving a light smack to his shoulder. “i was almost done-“

your complaint was cut short by a hand pressed against your mouth, silencing your whines.

“you’re the worst.” you mumbled against his hand.

“one more peep and no surprise party for you.”

“fine. i hate surprises.”

hyunjin’s eyes widened, his hand falling from your mouth in shock. “really?”

all you can do is offer a mischievous smile, trying so hard not to laugh as his face scrunches in disgust.

“when this is over, i swear to god-“

“hello?” jisung’s voice cuts through the kitchen. quickly finding your footing, you bounce up from behind the counter, hyunjin following behind you a beat later.

“SURPRISE!” the two of you shout in unison, watching your boyfriend’s eyes widen.

jisung stands at the doorway in shock, taking in all the details; big balloons in his favorite colors, a vase of daisies next to an obviously store bought cheesecake on a serving plate, and a small, yet disheveled looking present in the middle. he felt his heart swell, a small smile playing on his lips. “…for me?”

you nod as hyunjin waves him over, the wonder never leaving his eyes as he approaches the counter. hyunjin is the first to greet him, cupping jisung’s face as the younger man wraps his arms around his waist. they share a kiss, both smiling into it as hyunjin whispers declarations of love and well wishes to him. after he lets him go, jisung moves to you. that’s when the excitement hits him — he pulls you into a big hug, lifting you off your feet and turning in a circle. you giggle, giddily kicking your feet as he spins the two of you. after you’re both a little dizzy, he puts you back on your feet and catches your lips for a kiss.

“happy birthday, my love.” you whisper, fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck.

he hums before peppering a bunch of kisses across your face, pulling more laughs from you. hyunjin, busy with lighting the candles, watched the entire interaction, committing it to his memory. if he could freeze time, reliving any moment he wanted, it would be this one. watching the two people he loves the most in the world laugh and love each other.

“thank you.” jisung says, keeping an arm wrapped around your waist as he turns towards hyunjin. “both of you. really, you didn’t have to do this.”

“but we wanted to. you deserve the world, baby. but i couldn’t buy that at the store, so this will have to do for now.” hyunjin’s words make jisung roll his eyes, but he quickly makes it up to him with a kiss on the tip of his nose. “now blow out the candles before wax gets all over the cake.”

you land a harder slap on hyunjin’s shoulders, the two of you playfully bickering as jisung looks back and forth between the two of you. quickly, without a thought, he blows out the candles.

“that was fast.” hyunjin says, eyebrows furrowing as he watches the smoke disappear.

“yeah, it was. didn’t you wish for something?”

jisung shakes his head, reaching to pick the candles out of the cake. “nope. everything i could ever want is in the room with me. i don’t need anything else.”

the statement makes your heart flutter, beating so hard it might as well breakthrough your chest. you watch as hyunjin’s eyes water a bit, jisung quickly reaching up to catch the tears that fell.

jisung was right; nothing else mattered. without them, nothing has any value. nothing brought joy, or warmth or love. hyunjin and jisung are your everything.
