i think its kinda cute that anglos think the first line of pride and prejudice is the greatest thing on earth like. i mean it's a pretty good line to set the stage for what you're going to be reading about and i'm sure its staying power speaks to its favour but. forget about what the actual book is and what it means for a second just think about that first line in abstract. it is. mediocre.

#i mean i Guess ''universally acknowledged'' brings some interest and ''in want of'' brings some music but other than that #be honest. it's a very whatever line.#also just in general a first line being very iconic doesnt necessarily make it A Good First Line just a good first line for the book it is #like by itself ''Call me Ishmael'' is Nothing. it's moby dick that's good #now to me cien años de soledad's first line is good by itself because it already introduces so much wonder and mystery and amazement #i wanna know who is this person how did he become a colonel why's he about to be executed by a firing squad no less #most of all what does discovering ice entail!!!#the bell jar? excelent first line. instant banger. l'étranger? amazing first line. simple and effective.#BUT PRIDE AND PREJUDICE??????? come on.
