Before his jealousy could make him start asking stupid questions, she was suddenly on her feet and hurrying to the door. “I gotta go.” “Wait, why?” He scrambled to his feet and went after her, reaching out to grab her wrist. “Becks, what’s going on?” She turned around and pulled out of his grasp, her hands going up to cup his face as she searched his eyes. “Do you trust me?” Left speechless from her touch, all he could do was nod. A brief smile lifted her lips before her expression turned serious. “Then trust me now.” “Can I go with you?” he blurted out, then felt heat rising in his face. But despite his embarrassment his heart still sank when she shook her head. “No. And I can’t tell you why,” she added quickly. “But I promise that everything is going to be alright.” Then she leaned in to press a fierce kiss to his forehead, leaving him so stunned that he almost missed her calling out, “I’ll be back!” over her shoulder as she ran out the door and to her car. Reeling, he stumbled out of the house in time to watch her as she drove away from his house. He leaned heavily against the doorframe and his hand went up to brush his fingertips over the spot that she’d kissed. “Holy shit,” he breathed, blinking in shock.

Summary:

She was so beautiful in that moment that he suddenly understood why ancient astronomers had searched the stars for their mysteries, why scholars through the years searched and scoured the earth for meaning in life, why so many artists looked and lost themselves trying to find purpose. All of them had been looking for their Becky Krespe, and those who had found one thrived. “Fuck." . . . or: Darryl takes Becky to the end-of-the-school-year bonfire and has a realization that rocks his world. Summary:

Other than that, he hadn’t given Becky Krespe a second thought. In fact, he’d pretty much forgotten that she existed until he’d seen her sitting at the table, her eyes wide and startled like a deer in headlights. She was so…tiny. Not height wise, she was like an inch taller than him – something he totally wasn’t a little bitter about, no – but in size. The girl was thin, like the kind that made people question if you ate. But she was also pretty. So, so pretty, with her curls and emerald eyes and shy smile that made him want to start wars over. And he’d suddenly understood why Zeke acted the way he did around Tina. Darryl was down bad for the girl before they’d even said a single word to each other.

Ship It

What made you ship it? i've told this story before and i will continue to tell it until my last breath lol. when i first had them hanging out and flirting in Baby Steps, i had absolutely no intentions of having them end up together. they were originally planned to be each other's "one that got away." but then Katie said that she shipped them and it was like a switch flipped in my brain. i suddenly couldn't stop thinking about them and like what if i let them end up together? and the rest is history.

What are your favorite things about the ship? listen, i don't know if you know this about me, but i LOVE building ships from the ground up. getting to decide how they met and started being friends and when they started falling for each other is one of my most favorite things ever. and since they have no canon interactions whatsoever, i get to decide what their dynamic would be. i have complete control and i love it. yes i have control issues shhhhhh. (also like with Hemita i have a huge soft spot for interracial couples)

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? i kind of never want them to interact in canon because i know that i won't like it lol. plus it woud negate the whole point of them being a crackship. i don't care that they'll never be canon, i have more fun with them in my mind.

Update and Future Plans

Well, hello, everyone! Mod Pom here to make a post about the future of Baby Steps and this blog. First of all, I want to say welcome to all of our new followers! And to say thank you all for nearly 50 followers on this blog! It makes my heart so warm to know that so many people love this story and want to support it. You all are amazing and the reason the fic is still going. As I've mentioned on my main blog a few times, we are on the final laps of Baby Steps. I've been working on this fic for nearly a year now and knowing that it's almost over makes me a little sad, but its been on of the best experiences I've ever had. This fic means so much to me and I love this community I've been able to build through it, and to know that it's touched and helped so many people. With the end in sight, I've taken some time to think about what's next for this verse of mine. It's not over, far from it in fact! There are still parts from Zeke's POV that I want to write, along with finishing out the Barryl Chronicles. There are also moments from other characters POVs that I'd love to explore, as well. And there are two direct sequels already planned, one being a five to six chapter story and the other a long one-shot. Right now, sticking to my weekly update schedule, the main fic should conclude in about mid November. After that, I am going to take a break from the main story for a bit so that I can spend the holidays with my family and friends without having to worry about updating. I will still probably post one-shots from the verse, but the main story will be on a break until the new year. BUT!! Once 2024 rolls around, we will resume weekly updates for the sequels! So I hope you all will stick around for it, because I promise it will be worth it. :3 I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week and I will see you on Sunday for the next chapter of Baby Steps! *finger guns*
