Jackie Brown N-Word Bonanza
Last Week, I posted about the idea of applying current moral standards to the past, which some philosophers call Extreme Presentism.
As some of you might have heard, Sargon of Akkad was recently banned from Patreon for saying the N-Word during an interview on YouTube. (The interview took place on a channel other than Sargon's.)
I expressed my thoughts about that issue in this Twitter thread. I posed the question of why it was, apparently, okay for black people to say the N-Word and even, apparently, okay for black people to give white people permission to say the N-Word.
In this post, I want to add in Extreme Presentism as a factor. The video above is a clip from the movie Jackie Brown by Quentin Tarantino, which was released in 1997, over 20 years ago. In the clip, Samuel Jackson uses the N-Word five times in ten seconds.
I hate to be the kind of nigger that do a nigger a favor and then, Bam! hit the nigger up for a favor in return, but I gots to be that kind of nigger . . . I need a favor, nigger.
Is there an issue with Jackson's use of the N-Word? If so, why? If not, why not? In particular, if this use of the N-Word is okay, is it because the film was produced in the . . . last century?
The clip is taken from a YouTube video. Here is the full video, cued to Jackson going all out with the N-Word.
