monthly media recap: august 2023
read:
The Song of Roland - I wouldn't have picked it up if I didn't chance upon a neat old copy for free. It's, uh, educational? And the translation into Russian is quite beautiful
Angélique and the Demon, Angélique and the Ghosts, Angélique in Québec by Anne Golon - still reading this series and honestly can't wait to finish it - not because I don't like the books, but because the translation gets progressively worse with each volume. Someone please tell these people there's a difference between a wolverine and a lynx, or between a guinea pig and a porpoise (I know the latter two are called almost the same in Russian, but context, man. Context. Guinea pigs don't frolic in the waves). Story-wise, however, I am still having a great time
+ currently reading the next Angélique book and Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater (the sequel to Half a Soul I read last month)
watched:
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) - honestly, I watched it because: 1) I wanted to check out the show but thought I won't understand anything without the movie; 2) Salma Hayek pretty. I didn't expect to enjoy it because it's written by Tarantino and I really, really don't vibe with Tarantino, but enjoy it I did. The hostage-taking part was actually unsettling and the vampire-fighting part was fun; the family dynamics were also good. Again, Salma Hayek pretty, which also helps
From Dusk till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1999) - empty, skippable
From Dusk till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (1999) - now that's better, if only for the period setting. Ara Celi has perfect looks for a sweet kind girl tragically turned into a monster. I think the moral here is that if you're physically abusive to your kid, then your kid is better off being a vampire, what do you mean I'm misinterpreting?
From Dusk till Dawn: The Series (s1-3, 2014-2016) - as you could probably tell from the amount of gifsets I keep reblogging, I loved this one. Mythology, westerns, reluctant teamwork, family feels, hot people fighting and drinking blood - what's not to love? (Actually, that one character death is not to love, and the last episode is hella rushed, but what can you do). It actually isn't necessary to watch the film to understand it, but the knowledge of it makes it very interesting to compare the two and notice the cameos from the actors who were in the film. S3 kind of reminded me of Teen Wolf, which isn't much of a compliment, but this show overall had the same ambience as a lot of stuff I watched as a teen/in my early 20s (understandable, being made in that exact period), so that was nice.
Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love (2022) - this is like 20 minutes long but deserves to be on the list, because it's the story of Merlin and Nimue made by the director of The Green Knight, and it's beautiful
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) - it's good! Not "wow, incredible" good, but good, and I'm glad it is, because it's such a powerful and underrated chapter of Dracula. A slightly more detailed review with spoilers here
Woe Is No Big Deal / Раз, два — горе не беда! (1988) - rewatched this gem and dying to know if Leigh Bardugo has seen it, because this satirical fairytale/Cold War allegory was doing ~tsarpunk~ long before her
Wild Nights with Emily (2018) - that's right, there's more than one comedy about Emily Dickinson. This one's based on a play and feels like a play, which took some time getting used to, but in the end I enjoyed it

I know you don't really ship Logan/Rory though it makes me really happy that you don't hate them either! I just feel like so many Taylor songs apply really well to them: Champagne Problems, Mine ("a careless man's careful daughter" is so Rory!), Starlight, Gold Rush, I Bet You Think About Me (like in the context of Logan being with the well-bred heiress Odette and the Huntzberger parents looking down on Rory as lower class even though she's in the DAR and her grandparents are multi-millionaires and she's a freaking debutante and don't get me started on the way this show sloppily mishandles issues of money and class lol!) I Know Places, Red and probably others! I'm not even a huge Rogan stan, they're more of a low-key OTP for me, but I always felt like Taylor has a surprising amount of songs that could easily fit them. Then again, the beauty of Taylor's songs is that so many of them are so relatable that they could fit many, many different ships :)
Yeah, I wouldn't call myself a Rory/Logan shipper, but I do lowkey like them! They're interesting to watch.
More than that, I can appreciate the depth and complexity of their relationship, the formative impact they have on each other's lives. There's genuine love and affection there. They go through a lot together. I mean, they navigate their first real adult relationship through all its ups, downs, and family interferences; they confront questions about who they are, what they want to be; and they both have to decide on the direction or the shape they want their lives to take in the future.
I'd be lying if I said I didn't root for them at times.
Rory and Logan's relationship is significant, but also tragic, to me in a way, too. What I mean by tragic is that they seem to represent that "love isn't always enough to make it work, to make it last" trope and that's almost as gutting to watch as it is to experience. I relate to that so much because I've been there myself. I know how that feels. It sucks to say goodbye to someone you're in love with, to someone you'd hoped to have a future with, all the while knowing that the directions you're headed in are too different now, you're no longer who you once were, and what you want or need are things that person can't provide for you anymore. So you have to let them go.
Like--OUCH! That's some seriously scarring emotional hurt! It breaks my heart when I think about it too deeply. 😢
You're right about there being a lot of TSwift-applicable songs for Rory and Logan, though! "champagne problems" and "gold rush" are the two I attach to them the most, thanks to all the gifsets, but the others you mentioned work as well!
I'd argue "White Horse" could fit, too. Mostly when Rory's up in her feelings about Logan sleeping with all of the bridesmaids. Oh, and "illicit affairs." Perfect for everything that goes down between them in the revival. "happiness" is full of angst/nostalgia that'd pair well with what I described above, particularly the "there'll be happiness after you/ but there was happiness because of you too/ both of these things can be true."
"Midnight Rain" could be a good Rory/Logan song, too. "He wanted it comfortable/ I wanted that pain/ He wanted a bride/ I was making my own name."

I got so excited seeing you post about Succession, I am absolutely obsessed with everything about that show from the writing, to the performances, to Kendall fucking Roy. Would love to hear any of your takes or analysis on the Roy siblings.
Oh my gosh, me too, anon. I'd been watching the eps a few at a time and when I got halfway through s2, I started watching them one at a time just because I didn't want it to end! It's been a crazy long time since I've done that, and it was such an invigorating feeling to enjoy a show that much to want to draw it out again. I finished s2 a few days ago and am halfway through a rewatch already, haha, and I am SO. HYPED. for s3.
It's so well written and like you said, the performances are top-notch (Jeremy Strong ridiculously deserved his Emmy last year, oh my god), and just the pay off with plotlines and character arcs is unreal, even if that pay off often hurts. I think it does such a great job of showing how filthy rich they are too, but making no part of their life aspirational? Which is a hard line to walk. They're all so miserable and traumatised and disconnected and lonely and they're destined to stay that way because they have no emotional tools to do or be otherwise. It hurts, but it's so frequently what they deserve too, and that gets so tangled up and twisted. I love it.
And man, the Roy kids!! Putting some broadstrokes analysis / opinions under the cut, because omg, I feel like I'll be talking for 1,200 years otherwise, haha.
Connor Roy
Legit obsessed tbh. When I was growing up, my mum was a huge Spin City fan, so she used to park me and my sister on the floor in front of it with toys while she watched, and as a result I think I have this really warm response to Alan Ruck, haha. He's fantastic in this, and lends the right amount of vulnerability to Connor.
I love that there's this push-pull with him as kind of an outsider, but also not? Like he's there at the table, to borrow the phrase from Tom, but there's very much this feeling that it's a courtesy or formality to Logan's previous family (and god, I'm dying to know more about his mum / Logan's first wife), but that doesn't stop this deep rooted need that Connor shares with his siblings for their father's validation.
I think a lot about what Connor says to Kendall in the s1 finale about how anyone can have a million dollars, but right now, with Logan's empire, they're somebody. It's this sort of tangled disconnect from reality (anyone can have a million dollars??) but also his desire to be seen broadly, but more specifically seen as Logan's son, that I feel really grounds Connor's arc, and I feel like he's just going to get louder and louder about it, especially with his presidential run getting closer.
Kendall Roy
Okay, okay, okay, I know that he's an absolute nightmare and a terrible human, but oh my goooooddddd, I love him as a character. I saw it in somebody's tags on a gifset, but I love this set-up where Logan keeps Kendall on the shortest leash, but it's a leash all of his siblings, despite themselves, want to be on. That's awful, but so indicative of the toxic way that Logan's raised his children.
There's also a great quote from Jeremy Strong somewhere, and I can't find it now, but to paraphrase, he said that the whole family is raised on this idea of strength and power, and Kendall's sort of a case study in strength not being his native language. It's so true, and I think Kendall's smart and resourceful and quick on his feet, but he's also so often desperately trying to wear a costume of who he thinks he should be.
I don't think he's weak (in fact, I think he's really resiliant), but he's definitely a fragile character and an addict, who nakedly needs nurturing that no one is willing to give him, least of all his mother (which, god, that scene when he tries to talk to her in the UK destroyed me) so instead he pretends to mould himself into the perceived image of his father and fails every time.
It's brutal to watch, especially when you see other characters know that and use it to manipulate him. Hell, his own father pretends to nurture and protect him (and I think kind of genuinely does too? But it's so warped?) the whole of s2, and it brings Kendall closer than ever before. It's painful, and affecting, and it's just this manifestation of trauma in a hopeless, cringe-inducing package, haha.
Roman Roy
Another nightmare baby I tragically love, hahaha. I actually think Roman's had one of the most interesting arcs on the show and one of the few that seems to be positive? Like his tendency to not take anything seriously so that he never truly fails was pretty fun in the first season, but to see that evolve into someone who's green but has great gut instincts, and is good when he lets himself be and when he lets himself try, is really invigorating narratively, especially as the other characters all slip further down morally and/or stagnate.
I'm loving the way that it's sort of cannibalising itself though too with him and Geri's relationship suddenly, um, pivoting, hahaha, and especially the way she's honed in on him getting off on being demeaned. There's something really fun about the one character clawing his way up masturbating to being told exactly how low he is.
Plus Kieran Culkin is a gem.
Shiv Roy
Sarah!! Snook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had a huge crush on her since Not Suitable for Children so was already totally delighted to see her in this, but oh my god, she's so good, and Shiv is so awful in so many wonderful ways. I love that she's kind of like Kendall in the way she pendulums between extreme competence and the most mortifying self-sabotage, and the way she's a very specific sort of insecure. Logan never asked her, y'know? Not really, and the way she knows she's his favourite, but knows that being his favourite without the validation of succession doesn't mean anything.
In a lot of ways, she encapsulates the show's themes and Logan's abuse in the best way, because she has what her brothers want. Her father loves her more openly than he does any of them, but that love isn't enough, because Logan's made sure it never will be. It's not a true love after all, because Logan loves them, but he loves none of them more than himself and his legacy, and being given the latter is what they've all been convinced will make them happy when it never will.
Nothing will.
It's just so good and so painful, and I'm in love with it all.
#i hope this makes an ounce of sense anon#i am still extremely in my feelings haha#hbo succession#connor roy#kendall roy#roman roy#shiv roy#welcome to my ama

Hey! You ever end up doing essay on the kazumaji gifs? (I'm highly interested because it's always majima o' clock where I live)
it’s always majima o’clock here too; maybe we live in the same area... but lmao i didnt write the essay on my kazumaji gifs because i didnt think anyone would want to hear it so i meant it more as a per request kind of deal. and you’re requesting. I want you to know you did this to yourself, my friend
below the read more for everyone’s well being. welcome to my first official majima analysis essay
ok so in those tags i said something like majima is softest with kiryu because it is absolutely the truth (unless you count makoto, which i love them too, but majima has moved on or at least is making an effort to. and that was pre-tacky snake skin jacket and pre-mad dog persona.)
the prompt for the gifset was “maybe something about majima being stupid and unhinged but like, in a sweet way” and the whole point of this rambling is that kiryu is really the only one we see who causes the mad-dog persona to slip. kiryu says he can never get a read on majima but just because he is unpredictable doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand that he isn’t just batshit crazy. he trusts majima, and finds comfort in his lack of predictability, keeping kiryu’s life exciting and providing distraction from the insane amount of tragic shit that happens to kiryu. and majima has a similar experience of idolizing the yakuza lifestyle as teens/young adults only to have the yakuza drag them through hell. But this is supposed to be about Majima.
ANYWAY what GETS ME is again that mad-dog vibe slipping around kiryu. the only time we really only see it again is with Saejima when he comes back from jail. i’m gonna talk about that later too. LET’s GET TO THE GIFS i’m going in chronological order not the order i put them in
1)
Ok so as an audience, we don’t really know what happened between Kiryu and Majima between Yakuza Zero and Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami. Yes, we get that tiny ending scene of Majima going KIRYU-CHAN for the first time and Kiryu smiling at him. But we are given nothing as to how they met or why Majima started calling him Kiryu-chan. It is left completely to the audience’s interpretation. Because then it goes straight to the first scene with Majima in Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami after Kiryu gets out of jail. It implies that they already knew each other, and arguably that they were somewhat close -- close enough for Majima to “miss him.” (What was majima doing for those 10 years, i don’t know, but he clearly wasn’t in a great place, missing both kiryu, makoto, and saejima, we ignore y5 lore in this household or make up shit to fill in the giant gaps) You could argue that Majima missing Kiryu is just Majima being “crazy haha woah” but his character is so much deeper than that, and it’s proven in this gif’s scene. Yes he is fighting Kiryu with all his men. But if you are reading this you understand that them fighting physically all the time is a secret love language. They never intend to severely hurt each other. Fighting is how they know that they have an equal, someone else who was modeled into a weapon because of the Tojo Clan.
And yes, “He belongs to me!” is an extremely gay thing to say. He doesn’t even need to say that, though. One of his men didn’t understand that he doesn’t actually want to hurt Kiryu. The guy picked up Majima’s knife and tried to actually hurt Kiryu. Majima willingly gets stabbed so Kiryu doesn’t get hurt. That’s a handful of gay subtext right there. Majima’s first scene in y1 is about how the world is a horrible, shitty place that will chew you up and spit you out if you care. Then he goes and gets stabbed. Self-sacrificially. He cares about Kiryu, even if it hurts.
2)
This one isn’t as deep. It stems of the same concept of them fighting each other as equals. Majima explicitly says more than once that strength is the most admirable trait, Goromi says that it only matters that a man is strong. Kiryu is the only person who presents a challenge to him. He admires him.
3)
(As a disclaimer, I know a lot of people are uncomfortable with Goromi. I’ve also seen a lot of non-binary, gender-fluid, etc. people project on Goromi and Majima, and I feel like that can only be a good thing. Obviously they deserve more and more quality representation. I think the people who dislike Goromi are valid as well, but for the sake of this argument we are going to see Goromi as the people who project on her do and I’m going to use she/her pronouns when talking about Goromi.)
Regardless on your stance on this whole little side quest, the player has the choice to go along with Goromi which creates actually a lot of subtle connecting between the two of them. Even in just talking to her, we see the mad-dog mask slip. She talks about how much she cared about the girls at Club Shine and wonders how they’re doing. Literally says “all part of my tragic-ass backstory.” And Kiryu sympathizes with it. Says he sees through the “i hated it” bullshit and sees Majima/Goromi’s true self, which is that the cabaret job was hard for Majima because he cared about the women and didn’t like using them as a source of income and knew it would be his fault if they got hurt.
Also, Goromi says that "When I’m with a guy, it’s all about if I’m having enough fun. That’s why he’s gotta be strong.” Sound like someone we know? Someone who we are talking about in the last gif with i-just-got-the-shit-beat-out-of-me-and-it-was-awesome bliss on his face?
Anyway, the scene in the gif is near the end of the session. Kiryu is talking about how he’s been in prison for 10 years, and Goromi says that now that he’s out he should try to relax and and a little fun. Arguably, “since you’re so lonely right now, I’m gonna give ya a hand!” is most of Majima’s role in YK1. Kiryu gets out of prison. Majima wants to fight him all the time and says it’s because he’s gone soft and needs to train. Majima Everywhere presents excitement in his life when everything else is hard and shitty and traumatizing. Yes, Majima kidnapped Haruka. But there isn’t a lot of info on that. Majima says he did it so they could fight but it very likely could have been an order from the Tojo Clan or even Nishiki. Until he develops a bond with Haruka, Majima is, in a way, all he has. Nishiki is mean now. Yumi is ???. Kazama is i don’t even remember but he certainly isn’t any emotional support. He’s lonely. Majima is the only person he has from before prison, and quite possibly the only person who understands what he is going through.
4)
YK2, Kiryu has yeeted out of Majima’s life as Kiryu does, but he’s trying to protect haruka so I’ll let it slide. And what does Majima do now that Kiryu’s not there? Leaves the Tojo Clan. Yes it’s because he doesn’t like the 5th chairman’s style and to make up for Kawamura, but the point is he’s bored. The use of “MY Kiryu-chan” is obviously written there because “haha majima he’s crazyyy” but come on. Majima left the Tojo Clan after Kiryu stepped down as the 4th chairman. Because he was bored. Because he couldn’t trust his own men. The only person he considered an equal just wasn’t there anymore and he found it difficult to adjust. (That’s YEARNING, fellas)
So yes, HIS Kiryu-chan came home, but what is home in this context? It clearly isn’t the tojo clan, so I guess it could be Kamurocho in general. But if the clan doesn’t make it home, what does make it home? Perhaps a certain triangle shaped man??
5)
Oh boy silly Majima wants to fight Kiryu again hahaha weeeeeeeee NO listen, LISTEN, he does want to fight kiryu again, because 1) the man has been bored for a year 2) FIGHTING IS THEIR LOVE LANGUAGE 3) Majima is once again surprising Kiryu in a world where nothing surprises him anymore, where kiryu expects people to be vile and only want him for gain. Every single goddamn game it’s “Kiryu plz save the Tojo Clan plz” and Kiryu NEVER gets anything in return unless you count, i don’t know, Daigo and Haruka’s safety? But Majima doesn’t give a shit about any of that. Majima is one of the only people who consistently does things for Kiryu (even if they’re presented in an abnormal way). Majima is really the only one who makes sacrifices for Kiryu. But this fight, it kicks off YK2 of “hey, i missed you but i won’t admit it because we’re manly yakuza, please let me try to make you smile.”
6)
THE kazumaji scene. Going off of Majima being the only one to make sacrifices for Kiryu, here’s a perfect example. Majima first aids the Tojo Clan which he swore to leave literally only because Kiryu asked him to. Then, here, he get beaten within an inch of his life because he promised Kiryu he would protect Kamurocho from Ryuji. Majima does not give a shit about the Tojo Clan at this point. Yes, Majima LOVEEESSSS beating people up, but he’s fatally wounded. This is not a Majima who would die for the Tojo Clan. This is a Majima willing to die for Kiryu. After warning Kiryu about being to trusting, too.
And of course, we get the Majima collapsing on the pavement and Kiryu rushing in to CRADLE him in his arms like a damn fanfic. You’ve even got the “I did it for you” which everyone knows is basically an “I love you.” Look at Majima’s face in the gif. Bless the Kiwami 2 graphics, first of all. He’s looking at Kiryu like he wants him to be the last thing he sees, like he wants him to know that he’s going out for Kiryu, that despite the fact that he’s about to cough up blood he needs Kiryu to have the information he needs to save the clan and Kamurocho. He’s telling Kiryu all this with labored breath because he promised. Kiryu “One-Expression” Kazuma is viably worried as hell, the little nod in the gif kills me because Kiryu needs him to know he’s touched and he’s so grateful. The only reason Kiryu left him was because there was danger elsewhere and he trusts Kaoru enough to take care of him. (Side note: I love Kaoru Sayama, but I still feel like she’s good enough a character on her own and doesn’t need to be a romantic interest for Kiryu. Like it was like oh... she’s Girl so she needs to fall for the Big Strong Male Protag.... If Majima was a cis girl they would have made out in this game, maybe even y1.)
7) Speaking of sacrifices, Yakuza 3, the game where Majima literally joined the Tojo Clan again because Kiryu wanted him to protect Daigo. That’s a huge lifestyle change, Majima.
Yes, this scene is funny because Majima is riding in a Barbie-ass truck like a 15 year old driving on a learner’s permit in a downpour (yet proves he can drive stick seconds later) and thinks he hit Kiryu while he purposely hit everyone else. Look, Majima needs this ok y3 he looks like he’s been crying since kiryu left no one No One is going to hurt Kiryu now
That truck is likely stolen, he’s driving erratically as fast as he can because Kiryu is in danger, how did he even know that Kiryu was in danger is it like some kind of 6th sense... If you didn’t already know, I would take a bullet for Majima’s voice actor; his delivery of “Kiryu-chan! Where are you?!” could have just been like haha oops kiryu did i hit you ;3 but instead it’s this raw cry of genuine panic, like did his actions get kiryu hurt, Majima could not live with himself if he was the reason Kiryu got fatally hurt
8) Ok I’ve hinted at the fact that I have beef with the Hot Mess that is yakuza 5, wasn’t huge on Y4 and Y6 was fine but it was heavily based on the events of Y5. In my head I’ve got an entire fix-it fanfic in which Majima yeets out to Okinawa with Kiryu after Y3 I could write that upon request too ANYWAY here’s another sacrificial majima...
Despite not caring for Y5, THIS SCENE is RAW. Maybe he’s not super “unhinged” in this scene but it’s just so much. Majima, who Kiryu brokedown in his taxi bc he thought he got killed (because Kiryu made him stay in the tojo clan haha we’re out here crying), chooses Kiryu over Saejima. Saejima, Majima’s oath brother, Saejima. We love Saejima, Majima loves Saejima, but 25 years is a long ass time. Majima changed. Saejima changed. For awhile he had Makoto, but then Kiryu was all Majima had for a good chunk of Saejima’s time in prison. This is the man Majima got his eye stabbed out for defending. But the BaD GuYs that arent memorable enough for me to even look up the names of are like look, we want to watch the world burn because we are Bad Guys, so either you are going to fight your brother to the death or we are going to snipe Kiryu’s daughter in the fucking head. Obviously he doesn’t know that Baba is going to betray them, so he has to pick between Saejima and Haruka. He chooses to potentially kill Saejima for Kiryu’s happiness. I’m sure if things didn’t change, Majima would have held back and let Saejima kill him. Majima would rather die than see Kiryu in pain. Majima would rather kill Saejima/let Saejima kill him than let Haruka die. If that’s not a giant declaration of unconditional love and devotion, I don’t know what else to tell you.
Anyway, thanks so much for indulging me and listening to my yakuza opinions if you made it this far you the mvp :’’’’)
#i can't believe i sat down and wrote this monster#thank you so much for the ask#i love talking about majima and i have no one to discuss it with#distinguishedkingdomwolf#ask#kazumaji

Supernatural, according to someone who (still) has never ever seen a single episode and learnt everything she knows via the medium of Tumblr gifsets and the Dean/Cas AO3 tag.
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned in a comment to @thegirlwholied that the fallout from the Supernatural finale had resulted in me reading copious amounts of Dean/Cas fic, despite having not ever seen a single episode of the show, and she expressed an interest in what my take on it was; two weeks later, I’m finally following through.
The overall premise:
Sam and Dead Winchester, brothers, travel America, hunting ghouls, ghosts, vampires, and demons.
Dead/Dean in the previous bullet point was a genuine typo, but a fitting one; my understanding is that Dean is Dead a lot.
There is also their friend Cas, who is/was an angel
They have a ragtag assortment of friends (Bobby, Jo, Ellen) and enemy-of-my-enemy (Gabriel, Crowley) acquaintances who help them out along the way, before dying in suitably gruesome fashion never to be mentioned again
The previous point applies double if the character concerned is female
Their mum was fridged at an appropriately tragic point in their early childhood; their dad was a raging alcoholic who trod the path of self-destruction until his own demise
Dean:
Older brother, raised Sam after their mother died (in a fire?)
Loves his car, the Impala; Google informed me this was an actual make of car and not just a very weird name
Has a lot of man pain and an impressive back catalogue of Dead Dad Issues.
Reads a lot of Vonnegut and loves pie, burgers, and cooking/baking
Loves Castiel, but only in Spanish
Sam:
About seven-foot-tall and prodigiously hairy; assumedly related to Hagrid
Wanted to be a Normal Boy growing up
Has terrible taste (and even worse luck) in women
Obsessed with health food
Wanted to be a lawyer, at some point got into (+/- attended) Stanford
Castiel:
Was an angel, gave it up (for love of Dean and/or the rest of humanity), then might have become an angel again
Loves his trench coat, and also Dean
Has piercing blue eyes and no awareness of personal space
Spends a lot of his time with his head tilted 90 degrees in a way that Dean mentally describes as bird-like.
Powered by Grace, which is about a reliable as a cheap AA battery
Together, they fight crime! (and monsters. Mainly monsters).
I am still ploughing through Dean/Cas fic at an alarming rate, so if anyone has any must-read recs they’d like to share, please do - I’m especially enjoying complete AUs, Cas-and-Sam friendship, and vaguely healthy Winchester-brothers-against-the-world.

I’m autistic and one of the things I have trouble with is change. I’ve watched 911 since the third episode and now they have a second one? Idk. I’ve been seeing a lot of good things about it but I’m not sure if I want to watch it. Basically what I want to know is if it’s worth watching. Is it good? Are there any parallels between the new one and the Buck one? Who are the characters and what are they like? Will you start writing for this series instead of the other one? %
so, this got WAY longer than i thought it would, sorry!!! TL;DR is at the very very end!
tbh i didn’t wanna really give 911 lonestar a chance originally, i was lowkey annoyed bc it felt like they were like “oh u guys want buck and eddie, who are CLEARLY meant to be and have all this canon chemistry and relationship development to eventually get together??? lol NOPE but here’s a spinoff where u get ur white/latino gay ship :D”
which i do genuinely hope to god isn’t the case, like, i really need OG 911 to be like PSYCH here u go, some DIAZ-BUCKLEY fam. as a treat.
i did end up watching it bc curiosity and too many awesome gifsets finally got to me lol
and im only a couple of episodes in (haven’t had a chance to watch the 3rd ep bc of work and other things D: ) and so far i gotta say, i like the OG 911 calls that they get sent to more than 911 lonestars calls but again, im only 2 ep in, maybe they get more “woah thats crazy/hilarious/hearbreaking!” as the show goes on.
i honestly don’t see too many parallels between Buck and TK—the only thing i noticed where they’re pretty similar is how much they both enjoy easy physical contact. buck is very touchy feely and comfortable about showing affection/feelings and i feel like TK is the same regarding physical contact (with his dad at least)? but that’s about it.
for what it’s worth i do think the show is pretty entertaining and worth a watch!
my main reason for watching past the first episode is my enjoyment of the characters. i just think they’re all neat.
this is from a post i made when i first watched the show lol:
captain strand: good dad to all of his children
tk: hot gay messy boi
grace ryder: a fave, no nonsense beauty, judds better half
judd ryder: tragic big boi
captain blake: chaotic good w baby voice
marjan: wild feral messy gurl
mateo: if anybody’s mean to my SON im throwin hands bih
paul: again, if anybody’s mean to my SON im THROWIN hands
officer reyes: ready to dick tk down
here’s a more descriptive/longer summary of the characters if u wanna know more, if not skip down to the bolded sentence below lol:
owen strand is the captain (played by rob lowe) and to me he gives off chris traeger vibes (from parks and rec if u watched?) but with more depth. i like his character a lot, he’s a caring dad, seems like he knows what he’s doing, and like, c’mon, it’s rob lowe (i fell in love with him a million years ago when he played soda pop in the outsiders nipr;guebwuogrnofw)
tk is his son and a hot gay mess w some substance abuse issues (tho a lot has happened to him in only 2 ep i really don’t know how to feel about him entirely, bc besides stuff happening TO him, i don’t feel like he’s reacted in a way that shows much of his character?) idk maybe it’s just me. but he is a certified cutie so. lol
grace ryder, she’s smart (one of the only characters with more than ONE brain cell lmao) and gorgeous and an emergency 911 operator. she’s very supportive of her husband and what he’s going thru (which is A LOT), she herself has been thru a lot bc of the big incident at the beginning of the series and is still somehow held strong in spite of it all, she’s a personal fave of mine.
judd ryder is kind of a dick at first but i think its very understandable given the hell he’s been thru, im actually surprised at the amount that i like him. he’s very raw and vulnerable but has this “don’t worry im fine, back up” attitude that i loooove.
captain blake is the captain for EMTs, she’s got this soft teeny baby voice that contradicts so hard with her give no fucks ima do what i need to to find my missing sister actions irwughqwgoriegjf i like. she’s caring and does goes out of her way for the little guy.
marjan has ZERO chill but in a good way, i can already absolutely see her getting into trouble by doing some crazy impulsive thing on a call in order to rescue someone—-TBH she actually reminds me a lot of Buck from OG 911 in that way. like yea she’s reckless and impulsive but u can tell its bc she CARES and this firefighting thing is what she’s meant to do. i really like her.
mateo—-OH MAN. he’s 10000000% my favorite. it hurts me everytime he’s on screen, bc he’s such a sweet and HARD WORKING man and he deserves to be a firefighter and do what he wants/has been waiting for for so long, im so HAPPY captain strand gives him a chance. i think he might have some learning disability or maybe he grew up in a household where maybe his family was too busy or didn’t care to check up on how he was doing in school and they neglected to see how much he was struggling—this is all just pure speculation from the fact that on the show he tells captain strand during the interview that he’s always passed the physical exam to be a firefighter but keeps failing the written part :( i love my son.
paul is a trans firefighter who’s mainly known for his crazy good observational skills in the field—there’s an ep—ep 2?—that shows off his talent but like, i found it unintentional funny bc the way they did it was in a scene that honestly truly felt to me like a scene I MYSELF would write in a fanfiction if i wanted to show off a cool skill the character has but was also too lazy to make it look good???? lmaoooo im not trying to be mean but like, if u do watch it, its the 2nd ep i believe, the “office meeting” scene. other than that tho there’s only been a few scenes with paul in it (my personal fave being the skin care routine scene lol) but i look forward to more scenes of my son being a lil sherlock holmes :)
officer reyes is tk’s potential new mans. he seems like a good cop from what little ive seen of him doing police work. so, i saw a post someone made basically saying how ugly are the men in texas that officer reyes is out here thirsting over tk so HARD—and not to be rude, but he really is!!!! reyes is a goodlookin guy, so idk what’s up with that, maybe he likes messy bois? bc same.
p.s. im not sure how to feel about reyes and tk together yet bc it doesn’t really seem as if they have too much chemistry. hopefully that changes? i do kinda like that they haven’t started off their potential relationship on the best of foots, bc i love drama, an indisputable fact.
ONTO THE FINAL QUESTION!
OG 911 will always be my first love and i just don’t see this changing anytime soon. buddie will always be the #1 ship in my heart! and i have about a gazillion awesome prompts i need to work on so me switching over to 911 lonestar isn’t gonna happen. i love OG 911 way too much iuqhur4ogfoie3jwnwjinioj
tho i may occasionally—per the request of prompts i’ve gotten in the last week or so–take a couple of the characters from 911 lonestar and put them in a 911 fic as a crossover? we’ll see.
this ended up soooo long oruhibgruoeqwp i hope some of it helped tho?
tl;dt: 911 lonestar seems fun and the characters are interesting enough to keep me entertained so i say give it a chance :)
#long post is long#ask#anon#also i got ur other ask#NP! never a bother :)#911 lonestar#911 fox#tldr at the end#read more

Jonathan Morgenstern META
Jonathan’s death scene had me fucked up.
Like, I’m not gonna lie, I haven’t seen much of the show since they cancelled it. Half of me just wasn’t interested anymore, the other half was tired of the fandom always bickering, but fuck it, Jonathan dying had me in tears.
I only caught a glimpse of a gifset of his death with Clary and all. I hadn’t even realized the finale had aired. But on my dash there it was, Jonathan being killed in the arms of Clary.
And it made me really think about how tragic of a character he is. Don’t get me wrong he’s caused a lot of damage, physically and psychologically to a lot of people. He’s the bad guy, for sure. But he’s not the same brand of bad guy Valentine was, ya know.
Valentine to me was the kind of guy who knew better, he was aware that what he was doing was wrong and fucked up, but he did it anyway because he believed his way was better after all. Much like racists do, they are aware racism is fucked, they know they are shitty,. But they do it anyway.
Jonathan wasn’t that. Jonathan was very much the product years of brainwashing, abuse and neglect. For Jonathan there was never a right ot a wrong, it was just the way his father taught. This is a boy who grew up in complete isolation from others. Who developed his ideas of the world from whatever his father told him or beat into him, including the fact that he was an abomination. Then, his pre-teens to late teens were spent in another version of Hell, where he was physically, psychologically, and sexually abused. This further warping his state of mind.
Jonathan didn’t learn to view the world through the eyes of a man who has developed his own rational and critical thinking skills. He learned to view the world through a series of very poignant signals, through obedience for survival, that the most important thing is to make it out with as little injury as possible, He reminds me more of a person who had suffered so many tragedies at a young age, growing up, that because of the trauma and the resulting mental illness and fear, never ends up making the right decisions.
And what really hurts me about this character, at least from the show’s perspective is that we see his hope for a better life slowly diminish. There is a part where we kind of hope he becomes good. And slowly the decisions he makes aren’t great, and they lead him closer and closer to the tipping point.
That tipping point, at least from my view, is when he allows Valentine to live. Up until then he can still be the Jonathan that everyone wanted. Even the killing of Sebastian was still something that could have been covered up or reworked to his advantage. But the minute he allows Valentine a chance, he can’t take it back.
And even at that point it’s hard to blame him. Jonathan has ample amount of reasons and experiences that tell him he should not trust his father. But in the moment, with Valentine holding the sword and expertly saying words that make Jonathan feel like maybe this time his dad will look at him and see him, Jonathan believes him. Its, for me, the same hope a child holds out when their parents say everything is going to be alright, even though you can see it’s not. Mommy and daddy aren’t separating. Daddy won’t hit you again. Mommy will stop drinking, I promise sweetie. These small promises that are false, so obviously false, but it;’s so much nicer to believe that they’re true. So you do. And that’s what he did.
It’s that childish longing and hope for a father that turns crushes any hope of him being redeemable.
Every decision there after is a conscious decision, a purposefully evil decision. It’s no longer, I don’t know how to navigate the world, violence and blood is all I know. It’s I have a goal in mind and I will purposefully hurt and kill in order to achieve.
He becomes such a horrendous person that the only way to stop him is death. It’s what he’s earned after everyone and everything he’s destroyed and hurt.
But I can’t stop thinking about how this, what twenty, twenty-one year old man, a boy really but the way he acts, spent so much of is life in pain and agony. Just excruciating misery, marred with neglect and torture of all kinds. And his one reprieve from all the pain was his sister, regardless of how fucked his version of sibling love was, Clary was still that brightest star in his sky. And the fact he died essentially by her and in her arms, is to me one of the most heartbreaking things ever.
Everytime I think about him I just imagine this boy trapped in a glass box, shouting and screaming at the top of his lungs even though it doesn’t make a sound. His hands pounding at the glass, trying to get anyone to notice him and his pain. Mom. Dad. Lilith, Anyone. By the time he gets to Clary it’s too late and it’s not Clary’s job to save him. That should have been an adult who gave a shit, not a younger sister. But it’s still so heartbreaking to imagine the boy in the glass case slowly stop pounding on his prison walls. Sliding down to sit on the floor and just watch all these people walk around him, not one of them taking notice.
The fact of the matter is that boy could have been Jace. He could have been Magnus.
Had Jace not had Alec, had Magnus not had Ragnor. Who would they have been? I can’t say. What I can say is that they got lucky. They has someone who showed them that their was better.
Jonathan never had anyone in his corner. Not his parents, not friends, no one. And the brevity of Clary being in his corner was much too little too late. He was absolutely, without a doubt alone and he died the same. No one mourns the wicked.
It just reminds me of so many people who grow up with no one in their corner and this constant echoing of you have to be better than your circumstances, like fuck you. Sure, in a perfect world everyone with the worst circumstance would find inner strength and manage to overcome, but that isn’t the average. Sometimes the waves keep crashing and you try to reach out, hold on, wade the storm, but its too much. The current pulls you under and you don’t ever emerge. Some people get pulled under and get brought out, others drown and no one notices, ever.
Jonathan was a villain, yes without a doubt. He did heinous acts, he hurt so many people. But I won’t clap for his death, I can’t.

More DTM ranting, sorry not sorry.
What especially hurts about DTM is that it felt so self-aware of certain tropes like calling out saying women are "crazy" and showing emotional abuse and gaslighting etc, so when it seemed like they were going for the Bury Your Gays and Babies Ever After I thought "nah, there's gonna be a twist to this, they wouldn't do something so overplayed" but they did. And it wasn't even like they could do it in a way that softened the blow; like had the show ended on ep 9 it would have kinda been like the ending of House; yes something tragic will happen but the audience is left with these two people who love each other, together, till the end and that can be who knows how long.
But no, they had to have Judy die alone, off screen, no funeral, but Jen has a healthy baby and a new man and her kids and it's just all about her grief and her life, not the two of them together as we were lead to believe (and this isn't a shipping thing, they were never more than platonic soulmates for me but still), and no amount of montages or beautiful imagery will make that work for me. I saw a gifset comparing the ending to Cheleanor and hey at least Eleanor asked to be left, and Chidi got a peaceful walk through the door, not...what Judy is gonna have, even if she tries to OD or whatever (God I hate it).
And I'm just thinking of Killing Eve doing the same thing this fucking year. And the Thasmin build up for nothing. And people were so angry at KCFH, yeah that was crap but at least your girls are alive and together! That seems to be the bare minimum we can hope for.
