The Lay of the Children of Húrin

fol. 5r, 5v, 6r

Description:

5r: In the centre, Morgoth talks to Húrin whose hands are bound. He shows him the two options he pretends to offer – to the left, Húrin is is lying in a fiery pit and being tortured by balrogs. Elves, weeping, turn away from him. To the right, balrogs are forging weapons and offer them to their master.

5v: This page depicts Húrin as a captain of Morgoth, standing in the centre with raised sword on a heap of shields and spears in flames. To the right are the armies he commands, to the left balrogs serving him. An elf is hiding in the mountains.

6r: To the left Húrin is raising his hands in rejection of Morgoth's offer. Morgoth covers his face with his hand (‘hides his mood’) and gestures to the future he pretends to offer: Húrin as a captain is tended to by two men. He is attacking elves hiding in a cave.
