Ok I don't want this blog to turn into a Heartstopper blog but I do have a few more posts to get off my chest before I go back to my regular, random but still utterly gay schedule.
And this particular Heartstopper post is not a happy one, surprisingly. I finished the Nick & Charlie novella which I've owned forever and was waiting for season two to read. I added it to my Goodreads page after finishing it and casually scrolled through the reviews.
It surprised me... or maybe it didn't... that so many reviews, mostly by female readers, mentioned how they disliked the chapter in which Nick and Charlie have sex (and there's even a mention of a, gasp! condom!) because their precious pure innocent cinnamon rolls shouldn't even know what sex is (I'm almost quoting word by word here).
As a gay man I've encountered this in MLM media so many times and I'm honestly tired. Please, let's stop the emotional fetishization. I know this may come as a shock, but cute sweet little boyfriends don't just spend their time hopelessly looking into each other's eyes. They have sex. We have sex. MLM relationships are not emotional porn. Alice Oseman manages to write sex into her stories in a way that is completely appropriate and realistic for teenagers and grounds the characters in truly emotionally complex ways and all you see is superficial fluffy fan fiction fodder. Grow up.
Sorry for the rant. This comes after another post that made me really angry, a post about an openly gay actor by a fangirl who fetishizes his "wholesome" relationship with his husband while complaining about his more risque social media photos and the presence of an adult gay drama with lots of sex in his resume. It's... disheartening and sad and offensive.
