a couple of youtubers i subscribe to have been playing minecraft recently, either in a "ive never played mc but ill give it a shot" or a "i havent played minecraft since horses were added" way, and watching them has really made me realize how much ive just been min-maxing minecraft lately. like ive been doing some fun stuff, but its mostly extremely large projects that take hours of farming that isnt really fun for me. watching other people just play the game slowly and have fun inspired me to try and go back to experiencing the game that way, and it is so much more fun than what i've been doing.
does anyone else play minecraft in a 'i maximized my space for efficiency and then blanked on what else to do' style or am i just playing the game wrong
#i built a house in a new area thousands of blocks away from my original spawn#and actually took the time to make it pretty instead of just being like 'ah theres enough room for a bed and some functional blocks'#i think ive solved my problem of being bored in minecraft after beating it and its that i only ever do big time consuming projects or#the absolute bare minimum to maximize efficiency#and never try to just. be like oh let me build a little thing for decoration with random blocks. hehe#simon says

The Ultimate Guide to Procrastination: Mastering the Art of Doing Nothing
We live in a society that is obsessed with productivity. Everywhere you turn, there are articles, books, and courses telling you how to maximize your efficiency and get things done. But what if I told you that the real secret to success lies in doing absolutely nothing? Welcome to the ultimate guide to procrastination! Now, you may think that procrastination is simply a waste of time. But let me assure you, it’s a highly underrated skill that can actually take you places… like the land of uncompleted tasks and missed deadlines. So, how can you become a master procrastinator? It all starts with the art of distraction. You need to surround yourself with endless distractions that will prevent you from doing any work. Turn on the TV, open up social media, and dive into an infinite abyss of cat videos and memes. Remember, the more meaningless the distraction, the better! Next, you need to perfect the art of making excuses. This is an essential skill for any true procrastinator. Whether it’s blaming your lack of motivation on the weather, your noisy neighbors, or the alignment of the stars, always find a convenient excuse to justify your inactivity. Of course, no guide to procrastination would be complete without mentioning the importance of starting tomorrow. Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow, or the day after that? Procrastinators understand the true value of delaying, and they embrace it wholeheartedly. Finally, remember that perfectionism is the enemy. Procrastination thrives on imperfection, so don’t waste time trying to achieve flawless results. Just do the bare minimum to get by and call it a day! And there you have it, the ultimate guide to procrastination. Embrace the art of doing nothing and watch your productivity plummet. But hey, at least you’ll have plenty of time to binge-watch your favorite shows, right? Happy procrastinating!

BECAUSE I’M NOT POPULAR, I’LL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #164
Hey, not dropping the ball actually worked!
We’re just a hair’s length away from summer vacation, but unlike last year when Tomoko approached summer with not much consideration, she’s now taking a proactive role in deciding how to spend her last summer in high school. At first glance, Tomoko appears to have become a responsible, young lady. But as we soon will see, that can-do attitude may not be as refined as it looks on the surface.
Chapter 164: Because I’m Not Popular, I’ll Do My Best Starting From Summer Break
There’s that time period during the day when most students have already left but school hasn't quite closed up. It’s pretty creepy, even more so before summer break when you’re expected not to stick around.
Have I mentioned Itou is a cute? ‘Cause she is.
It’s usually her looking after Komiyama, so it’s really sweet to see the dynamic flipped around like this. Despite, well, everything, Komiyama is a good friend.
Assuming that cheering for the baseball teams is optional, it’s endearing to see Itou go through with it. Even though baseball isn’t her thing, she’s likely doing it to support her bestie, which I can 110% get behind.
Ah, right. Dude’s in the manga club. That said, I wonder if their plans are for just being attendees, or if they’ll actually be manning a booth and selling their work. With his skills and, er, preferences, I think Hatsushiba could do the latter.
Don’t be so modest, Tomoko. There’s no slouching either when you’re a three-year veteran of the Going-Home Club.
Studying during summer break? Outrageous!!
It’s intriguing to see just how Tomoko’s study habits have evolved throughout the series. The early days would see her spend summer goofing off on her hobbies, with bare minimum concern for academics. But now, Tomoko is actually considering studying on her own accord. Sure, it’s more-or-less a fallback when she has nothing else planned, but the thought itself is still worth mentioning.
Is that one of those mini-fans that you can carry around in your bag? I love those things.
Study camp, huh? Any other day, Tomoko would be apathetic to the idea, leaning more on the side of brushing it off. But having Katou bring it up makes all the difference, ‘cause let’s be real. Katou could ask her to sign up for a hostess bar at the Red Light District and Tomoko would still seriously consider it.
Miss you, Yuu-chan.
I second that, Komi. Fourteen hours of studying a day is brutal, even if that’s to be expected in what is essentially a boot camp. I’ve always questioned the efficiency of cram schools and the like, mostly because they seem to prepare more for short-term memorization than long-term understanding. But even it actually works in principle...
...I’m not sure Tomoko will be able to handle it.
Perhaps it’s just me, but it feels like Tomoko is overestimating her discipline for studying. She already struggled with Katou’s flashcards and study sessions that a whole training camp feels like it would have a more detrimental effect on Tomoko than a positive one. “Work hard, play hard” was never meant to be that extreme, Tomoko.
That’s...genuinely uplighting. Tomoko has missed out on several of the key “memorable” high school moments, and she usually lets it go with only mild regrets. But here, Tomoko’s actively trying to gain what she once lost. Sure, she’s trying to “game the social system” a little, but what did you expect? She’s a person, not a saint.
This was Yuu’s only line in this entire chapter. My girl deserves more than this.
Will the 2% of Tomoko’s personality that is tsundere ever realize that if you really “didn’t care either way”, then you wouldn’t have asked the question to begin with? Doubt it.
That romaji tho.
It comes to the surprise of absolutely no one that Komiyama has some pretty...vivid fantasies about Tomoki. But what stands out to me is how deep into the relationship her thoughts go. Most people fantasize about their crush first in their sexual attractiveness, but only a few ever dream beyond that. Ironically, you know your crushing has gone off the deep end if you start thinking about them in domestic, SFW ways. Least Komi’s committed, yeah?
Gee, I wonder what’s that “and stuff” Tomoko’s talking about?masturbating
Nothing like a fresh bowl of Grossi-Os and Gross Juice to start the day!
If what Yuri says is true, then that would mean that she and Ucchi have probably walked to school together several times before–more than the couple of times we’ve seen, at least. And even so, it doesn’t look like they haven’t gotten much closer as friends, if at all. Some people just don’t click, I suppose.
Not sure how blind Ucchi is because anybody with a pair of eyes (beady or not) would see that Yuri has friends, even if you only count Mako. Poor girl just can’t accept the truth even when it's right in front of her face.
Ah, Yuri. Why can’t you just drop the “savior” act and just admit you want to spend time with her?
I’m inclined to agree about Yoshida, but who knows? She’s surprised us before. Mako's a safe bet, though. Especially if the former’s going. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Boy, does that take me back. It still blows my mind that all of Ucchi’s problems originated from one night of misunderstandings. The art nerd in me really appreciates the subtle improvement in Niko’s art style. The character models feel “weightier” and more consistent without compromising the stylization.
You don’t see it in the previous panel, but Ucchi was totally blushing at the prospect of reliving her trauma/dream. Perhaps she was also looking to live out that ping pong match she never got.
I’m not sure if there was some kind of wordplay in the original text. Either way, it kind of sucks for Yuu-chan that she got such a “flattering” nickname when she wasn’t involved in that scenario whatsoever. Though it sure is a tad classier than Miss Akari “Dick Sister Jr.’ Iguchi.
It’s kind of (read: absolutely) frightening how Katou’s envy towards Yuu feels a lot more intense than Yuri’s. Perhaps it’s because Yuri’s so transparent that you know how to deal with her. But with Katou, that air of secrecy feels like a nuclear bomb about to go off.
I always wondered where girls picked up that thing where they intertwine their fingers as a sign of affection. It’s precious.
Praise modern technology for convenient storytelling.
Wow, Fuuka’s already made her mark on Tomoko’s “bitch” list. Though exactly why she’s on that list now is kind of odd. I mean, yeah, she asked Tomoko about the whole fondling thing, and she unintentionally presented herself as a pervert for the whole “hair” thing, but Fuuka hasn’t really done anything all that terrible. If anything, Tomoko is probably expressing a rare bit of jealousy towards someone else supposedly perving on Katou besides her.
The most striking part about Fuuka’s inevitably failed plan is that she describes Tomoko’s appearance as “sudden”. It was touched on before, but it further emphasizes that Tomoko’s friendship with Katou was just as unexpectedly quick in-universe as it was for the readers. And in doing so, it brings us one step closer to the real mystery over why Katou is so enamored with Tomoko in the first place.
Ya’ll know Sayaka’s got her homegirl’s back on this one. Let’s see (hopefully) how Akari screws it up.
Chapter 58, mothereffers!
I don’t know whether I’d say Nico Tanigawa has been playing the long game, or if they just found a convenient throwaway to capitalize on. But the acknowledgment itself is very much appreciated. Tomoko may have forgotten, naturally, but us overzealous fans certainly never did!
The chills, man. Chill’s right up the spine.
It’s certainly true that Tomoko’s words can be interpreted in a good or bad way, so it’s pretty telling that Katou’s gut reaction went for the latter. It suggests that Katou may actually have some insecurities that can easily set her off. Then again, a defining part of Katou’s personality is that she takes everything Tomoko says at completely face value, so maybe she’s starting to see Tomoko’s negativity even if it’s not there. Just more of the enigma that is Asuka Katou.
Not a bad save, Tomoko. Countless battles with shame have made her quick on the fly. Unfortunately, while she’s improved at starting a save...
...she still doesn’t know how to end it.
It would’ve been a clean getaway if Tomoko had just ended about half-way in the above panel. But because Tomoko’s anxiety causes her to try and cover all the bases, she ends up rambling suspiciously. The part about Nemo isn’t even that relevant, but in her burst of defensiveness, Tomoko ends up saying things that could just exacerbate the problem even further.
Fucking shit, Katou is damn scary.
The one fortunate thing about Tomoko’s defensive rambles is that once she starts to cool down, her honesty starts coming out more organically. Self-deprecation becomes self-reflection, and brings to the forefront Tomoko’s endearing side.
Only Tomoko could spout such a cliché moe line and sound so pure of heart. Must be the irony.
Aha. Ahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
–that totally didn’t happen.
Tomoko, girl, you’re in the CLEAR! Stop trying to fan flames that have already been put out.
But on that note, it does affirm that while Tomoko is honest with Katou about certain things (perversion, laziness), she isn’t quite ready to be honest on anything that would paint Katou in a bad light. I’d say tha’st about 85% due to fear.
Death Flags raised all around.
I had a feeling that Nemo would take the plunge this time and invite Tomoko out somewhere during the summer. It seems like such an insignificant gesture, but considering that this is the very first time a classmate has asked to hang out with her during the summer, it warms my heart.
Hey now, Tomoko. Don’t get cocky when you’re maximizing your own goof-off time by taking a study camp.
The easy guess is that Nemo wants to go to Comiket. But really, it could be anything that Tomoko would have an interest in. And because it’s implied that Nemo is going for research purposes, it could be anything from a seiyuu panel (the last one went so well) to a hot spring to a hentai game company. Hope they bring Okada along...
Mama senses her daughter’s giving in to peer pressure.
Not gonna lie. This hand gesturing from Rena made me think that she was thinking about doing...something else.
Damn mind-in-the-gutter.
Even though Anna doesn’t appear to be the studious type, it’s pretty cool to see that she can respect people who are. Also, I dig the way she wears her tie (or is that a ribbon?).
Emoji II really has become an honorary delinquent and it fits her perfectly.
I guess no matter how much more grounded Tomoko becomes, she still thinks reading manga is legitimate practice for playing in real-life (though tabletop games may actually allow for some truth).
Sub!Tomoko confirmed.
What a way to end a chapter. For the longest, Katou had always viewed Tomoko through a pair of rose-tinted glasses, always seeing the girl’s faults as endearing “quirks”. But as her soul-piercing gaze seems to indicate, Katou has reached a revelation about Tomoko that she can actually disapprove of. Whether or not it’ll shatter her illusion of Tomoko is still unclear, but how she treats Tomoko from here on out may finally give us a deeper look into Katou’s psyche.
160+ chapters we’ve followed Tomoko, and we’re still learning new things about her. The very extent of Tomoko’s agency has always been a tad murky. She’s good at (poorly) executing short-term ideas, but hardly does she plan out and follow up on her long-term goals. Even her greatest milestone of making friends involved a lot of pushing from outsiders (Ogino, the most obvious case). That said, having to take charge of herself for once is inescapable with college on the horizon. How she goes about it amongst her various mom-friends may end up being Tomoko’s biggest personal challenge yet.

How To Bring In A Little Extra Cash On The Side.
“Take the leap! Quit your day job and be your own boss!” Following this type of entrepreneurial advice comes with a fair share of risk. And let’s face it: not everyone who tries self-employment thrives as their own boss. So what if you have an inner-entrepreneur who wants to venture forth, but you also want to keep the benefits of your current job? There’s a lot to be said for health insurance, regular feedback and steady deadlines.
In this post, you’ll find out precisely what it means to have a business in addition to your day job, as well as learning the dos and don’ts of having a successful side hustle. From finding the perfect idea for your part-time business to optimizing your income from it, you’ll learn how to grow your side hustle in no time.
A side hustle provides a form of job freedom that absolutely anyone can attain.
One day, a British construction manager decided to start writing reviews of fish tanks. The reviews included hyperlinks to Amazon product listings, and he knew he’d get a small commission if readers clicked through and purchased them. But the reviews were posted on an obscure website and, busy with his other day-job work, he half-forgot he’d ever written them. So he was pleasantly surprised when, several weeks later, he received a check for $350. Even now, years down the road, he’s still getting $700 a month for the same reviews. In short, he has the perfect side hustle.
A side hustle can be defined as a profitable business venture that operates as an adjunct to other paid work or employment. No more than the bare minimum amount of time, money and effort should be invested. It shouldn't be a big deal.
You can even think of it as a kind of job security. The days of a "job for life" are over, and a side hustle ensures several incomes from different sources. You simply won’t be held to the whims of a single employer whose loyalty to you can’t be counted on.
Everybody needs a side hustle. It can make transitioning from your day job easier, too, if you decide to quit or are fired. Leaving may seem exhilarating in the abstract, but the reality can be difficult: you’ll lose a reliable income source and health insurance. A side hustle gives you a taste of entrepreneurship, but without all the risks of going it alone.
There’s also no reason to feel daunted when beginning a side hustle. For starters, you don’t need to spend a lot of time doing it. No more than an hour a day maximum. Any more is probably a waste of time. Secondly, there’s no need to have a business degree to get going. Remember, it's your business you’re running, not someone else’s – you're the one setting the entry requirements!
Strong ideas for strong hustles arise from careful questioning and a bit of math.
The adage has it wrong; money can grow on trees. But growing a money-bearing seedling requires planting the right seed under the right conditions.
All it takes is a little thought, however, and you’ll find those fecund and productive ideas that are bound to blossom. To get going, it’s important to recognize that hustle-worthy ideas share three qualities. They need to be feasible, profitable and persuasive.
If you can answer yes to the following three questions, then the idea is feasible. Does your idea motivate you? Will it earn you money? Can it be accomplished in a short period of time?
How do you know if your idea is profitable? Well, try explaining the merits of your proposal to potential customers in two sentences. No luck? Then your potential customers won’t become paying customers any time soon.
An idea is persuasive if your customers can’t say no. Consider Julia. As a caricaturist, she was earning $100 an hour as a side hustle. But when she started sketching with digital drawing technology, she found she could charge $250 an hour. This was possible because few customers had seen the technology before. The novelty gave her a persuasive edge over the competition, and that wow factor was irresistible
So once you’ve got some feasible, profitable and persuasive ideas, you’ve got to do some basic math. You should calculate the projected profit of each hustle with this equation: “anticipated income minus anticipated expenses.”
Put this way, making a profit is easily understood. You should spend less money on your hustle than you bring in. You should also calculate the answer twice. One should be a conservative projection, the other an optimistic one, depending on the predicted strength of possible outcomes.
Transform your side hustle idea into an offer with a price, a pitch and a promise.
You might think it’d be difficult to make a lot of money from giving guitar lessons as a side hustle. After all, there are already plenty of guitar teachers doing the rounds. But Jake earns $6,000 a month doing exactly that. He can make this much because his offer trumps the rest.
Once you’ve got your idea, you can turn it into an offer. Every offer includes three elements: a promise, a pitch and a price.
The promise is a bold statement that tells customers how they’ll immediately profit – that is, how you'll change their life. Jake promised "The most awesome guitar lessons in the universe."
A pitch tells customers all they need to know, with no irrelevant details. Jake's pitch was "The typical goal is to have fun (always first and foremost), as well as learn the instrument, all while maximizing efficiency so we meet your goals."
Your price communicates the cost, and should also include a "call to action." A tag like "phone this number" or "click this button” should do the trick. It needs to be easy and obvious.
The best offers also create a sense of urgency. Your potential customers need to think they want your hustle immediately.
A good way to do this is to ensure you respond to queries from customers quickly and efficiently. A study by the Harvard Business Review found that companies who responded to a customer's request for information within an hour were seven times more likely to get business.
Another technique for communicating urgency is to use the color red. Highlighting words like "now" or "today" works wonders. Finally, if you’re selling online, you’ll find that a countdown on the checkout screen is great for hurrying customers along.
Okay, we’ve covered the things that constitute an offer, so now let’s think about the kind of tools you’ll need to get up and running.
Your side hustle needs resources. Make a shopping list and prioritize what’s required.
One particular Valentine’s Day, Sarah spotted a gap in the market. No one was selling custom-printed candy hearts. So she got down to it herself and within days had multiple orders. When her supplier wasn’t able to keep up with demand, Sarah found her own printing machine to ensure the business kept chugging along.
If you, like Sarah, want to be resourceful and have the right attitude for rapidly growing your hustle, you need to have the basics covered. You need a resource-shopping list which will include the following.
First, a website. This is your online home, and a content-management system such as Wordpress can make setting it up easy.
A social media profile. You needn’t be operating on every single platform – just one or two should be fine. However, do register your side hustle’s name with the most popular platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter, irrespective of your current reach.
A scheduling tool. A side hustle is a time-based commitment and time management is critical. A scheduling tool means you’ll spend less time organizing meetings with colleagues and customers and more time working, as online scheduling applications are designed to display mutually available slots.
A payment system. Be sure to have an invoicing system, PayPal account or shopping cart on your website before you launch.
Once you have these four elements sorted out, you should prioritize providing more value and generating more money. Value is best improved by responding to customers' unspoken needs. For instance, say you’ve been walking a man’s dog while he’s on vacation. Maybe that same man needs regular dog care when he’s back in town? Ask him.
Money can be generated through regularly scheduled price increases. Don’t be afraid of doing this – customers will understand. After all, once your business has proven its reliability, you need to charge a fair price.
Sell your side hustle effectively by understanding its benefits and involving the right people.
Each spring, Girl Scouts can be seen selling boxes of cookies at malls and outside supermarkets all over the United States. Their pitch is simple: “Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?" They sell them by the truckload – 200 million boxes every year, to be precise. So what can a side hustler learn from the Girl Scouts? Well, they sell so many cookies not just because the cookies are scrumptious but because people know that they are.
When you’re selling a product or service, you’ve really got to emphasize its merits. Lead with the benefits. You might tell customers that your product will make them happier or their lives simpler and better. Ideally, you should connect with people’s emotions.
Consider a dog sitter. She might not explicitly try to assuage an owner’s guilt about leaving his dog at home alone, but she can imply it. A carefully crafted pitch might go “Leave your dog with me and he’ll feel loved and cared for.” Be subtle.
Once you’re able to distill your side hustle’s benefits, you should reach out to four types of people who can help you along the way. There’s no need to do your solo side project alone.
First, find supporters. Most likely this means your family and friends – people who can contribute in different ways and support your efforts. Second, seek out mentors. These are guides or experts who can give you feedback and advice. Third, identify influencers. These are trendsetters who'll spread the news about your product. Trusted authorities, like reviewers or bloggers, are generally best for this. Fourth, locate some ideal customers. These people are perfectly placed to evaluate products and respond to questions you might have with honest and detailed answers.
Identify what’s working best in your side hustle. Then do more of it.
Often, when business owners are asked how their businesses are going, they’ll just respond with a perfunctory, "Oh, it’s fine." That’s not the right answer! A business is never in stasis. It’s either on an upward trajectory – or it’s sinking.
It’s important, in the early stages of your hustle, to know exactly what sort of trajectory your business is on.
Once you’re up and running, ask yourself a simple question: is your venture making money? There are three possible answers.
First, you might find you’re far exceeding initial expectations. Fine, that’s great. You’ve obviously got to keep going. Second, you might think your original idea was good, but people haven’t latched onto it. It’s difficult to admit it, but that’s the time to cut your losses and move on. The most common response in the early stages is the third. You’ve found your idea hasn’t completely gained traction, but as it’s making a bit of money it doesn’t make sense to pull the plug.
If this last option sounds familiar, but you’re still not certain how to finesse the problem areas in your hustle, then have a look at your metrics. Metrics are measured in three areas. Profit – that’s income minus expenses. Growth – ask yourself how many new customers or what new prospects you have. And time – how long do you spend on your hustle each week?
Once you’ve identified areas of concern, you can improve on them by applying two basic rules. In the first case, do more of what’s working. In the second, abandon what’s not. It’s universally tempting to try to solve a problem. But don’t. Really. The most successful people just drop them and concentrate more on those aspects that function best.
Well, that’s it! You have all the tools you need to start your side hustle. From here, the only way is up.
Absolutely anyone can create and launch a successful part-time business. It doesn’t require much time, money or effort to start one, and it doesn’t mean quitting your day job. A side hustle is a great idea. It gives you an extra paycheck, but without the terrifying risks of being a self-employed entrepreneur.

The following are the 7 most common mistakes I see new entrepreneurs make. Mistakes that limit their business' potential and make their lives harder.Don't Value Your Time High Enough: The number one mistake I see new business owners make is they don’t value the most finite resource, time. Yes you want to go above and beyond for your clients, especially when you don’t have many clients - but charge for it! Don’t drive an hour and a half out of your way to a job and charge the same as that job next door. When you're starting out you need to maximize the number of paid hours in a day, the number of hours that are actually making you money while minimizing the time spent on everything else.Feel Like You Need to Win Every Job: New entrepreneurs tend to have a scarcity mindset where they feel like they need to land every client otherwise that's a sure sign they're failing. This is simply not true. It's actually more beneficial to land fewer jobs but at a higher price. Fewer jobs means less man power, less assets needed, less travel time. Think about doing as few jobs as possible for the most moneyDon't Charge Enough Money: Charging enough money ties directly in with valuing your time properly. Your goal should be in the top 3 most expensive companies in your area and industry. Think about the brands who are able to do the most impressive things.. The cheapest brand or most expensive? A lot of times an increase in price by 10% can double a small business’ profit margin. A caveat here is in order to charge the most you have to be the best - you have to always answer the phone, follow up quickly, perform services quickly and efficiently, do unexpected things to make the client smile, and be prepared.Insist You Need a Revolutionary Idea: Most of the time the best opportunities are in improving existing industries. The problem is we only hear about the revolutionary ideas that worked, not the hundreds or thousands that didn’t. In the beginning when we don’t have a ton of money or resources our goal needs to be to increase the odds of success above all else. If you still want to work on changing the world it is best to do this after you have income and assets in place.Delegate Too Soon or Not Soon Enough: This is an interesting one because it can actually go on either end of the spectrum.Delegate Everything Too Soon: This is an issue I’ve seen recently with people asking themselves “how can I do the bare minimum and make money?”. Unfortunately making money isn’t easy and these people are simply looking at the problem the wrong way. Money comes when you provide value and it is hard to provide value without putting in the work. We see this a lot in people who come up with the revolutionary idea “Why can’t I just start a business, contract out all the work, and collect checks?” where in theory this could work but in reality there is a lot more to it.Not Delegating Soon Enough: You see this issue a lot more in currently successful business people who used to have this issue. I suspect you see this trait in successful business people because those are the people who are willing to do absolutely any work in their business in order to make it succeed, they don’t mind if they have to sweep the floors. I think it's the “I’ll do anything” mindset that gets someone on a successful path but later you must make the transition to being able to delegate effectively in order to truly grow.Worry About Perfection: Far too many people want everything to be perfect before their business’ launch. This is simply a form of procrastination to avoid the uncertainty of what might happen when we actually do launch. Fear of the unknown and failure is daunting for everyone. Let’s break it down. Would you rather launch in 3 months, make sure the product works in the market worrying about perfection later or spend 6 months launching the “perfect” product and finding out half of what you built needs to be changed anyways. I know which option I’d choose. What would you add to the list?

Written by R. Ann Parris on The Prepper Journal.
Balanced storage is important to ensure we really can weather life’s storms, great and small, personal or widespread. However, there are some things that make sense to stockpile in excess. They’re typically going to be things that we have zero or limited expectation of producing, or producing efficiently.
That can be things that are out of reach due to climate. It can also be things that are unwieldy to process or require long growing and then processing time, or multiple space-sucking and sometimes financially draining investments to produce something that can be cheaply purchased and easily stored.
Here I’m aiming for universally applicable items or standards, and trying to stay away from the ones that are situationally dependent. Even so, there are plenty we can add to this list.
Our current storage should factor hugely in determining if and what we stock to excess, and how much excess. We also want to consider our location and existing capabilities before we go whole hog when over-balancing stockpiles.
Prime excess items are also prime for barter
I’m not a proponent of barter-only stockpiles, but these are also things we or most of us will be using as well.
Some of the examples below are somewhat limited as to crisis scenario, particularly when we’re trying to avoid tipping or showing our hands, but many apply to all types of crises, slow or sudden. Some of the examples even have barter potential now depending on our social networks.
Not everyone is ready to start hitting excesses or extras
If you’re not there yet, first cover the 3-7-10-14 days every government agency and state/territory prescribes. Then be able to function for 30 days in a relatively normal society where you pay bills and family needs to be at work/school, rested and in fairly clean clothes without smelling funny.
By all means, go out further – it’s a suggested minimum.
After that’s set up, make sure you’re right financially.
Once your food and other daily-use items and your immediate-need goals are covered, then start veering into excesses, but prioritize them. Even within this list, how much of what we can make the most use of – personally and for barter – is going to be hugely individual.
Stuff to Stockpile (or, at least consider)
Large-Scale Staple Crops – These are, in order: Grains/carbs, fats & oils, protein plants, and other proteins. Tag on hay feeds for livestock.
Those crops tend to require a fair bit of space, some equipment, and significant labor effort and hours to produce.
It can be done, absolutely, but since they represent base survival calories and macros, and are fairly inexpensive in a world of mechanized farming (in about the same order as that list) it’s worth considering having them in excess to the rest of our food storage.
Veggies and greens we can produce pretty much anywhere and stand a much greater chance of foraging. Fruits and fish are neck-and-neck for next easiest to obtain for most of us (hugely dependent on where we live and how much other competition we’ll have for them). Hunted/foraged or raised mammal and bird proteins are even more location-based for reasonable expectations of impacting our food supply.
We’ll start balanced, ideally, but because of our likelihoods of successfully producing or harvesting/capturing, once we get to whatever our comfortable level is, we can work those items in a pyramid from deepest to “be nice if”.
Climate-Specific Produce – We’ll also want to consider things we like that just aren’t practical to grow or produce in our areas, for all kinds of reasons.
(The “value” article here https://www.theprepperjournal.com/2017/07/26/selecting-crops-survival-gardens/ has a number of assessments we can apply on that front.)
Sugar – There are alternatives to sugarcane that can be produced for sweeteners, although it, too, requires sometimes significant land area and post-harvest processing. Some of them can be concentrated enough for use in water bath canning, but it’s usually not an efficient use of those items.
On the other hand, whatever we think about it and its origins, white sugar is fairly cheap at the store. It requires nothing more than a moisture and pest barrier to store for decades.
Salt – Like sugar, salt is fairly inexpensive, requires nothing but a good container for decades of storage, and is vital in several types of preservation above its seasoning capabilities.
Distilled Vinegar – This one is also very doable at home. It does, however, require multiple pieces of equipment and the know-how to basically make wine or beer or strong cider, then clarify and distill it.
Not bad skills and materials to have, but also not always reasonable, particularly if we don’t already produce or have the ability to harvest fruits and-or grains … and harvest them in enough excess over our food needs to watch barrels and crates become buckets, and then those buckets become quart jars.
Conversely, vinegar for cleaning and preservation is relatively inexpensive in stores, has a long shelf life, and is more compact to store than its ingredients and supplies.
* There are two general ways to make non-distilled vinegars that are totally worth it as seasoning, health boosts and a way to use tart fruits that are totally worth the much more minimal investments that take up less space and that are way, way easier.
On the non-food front…
Fire Prevention, Detection & Control
This is one that everybody, everywhere, should buy into, and then go to excesses. They’re too prevalent right now and too common in any disruption in services or extreme weather to ignore.
Some aren’t going to be able to manage prevention’s and safeties to avoid having fires reaching us. However, we can all buy into smoke detectors and masks, make escape and rally plans, and backup batteries and supplies for controlling small fires and evacuating even in the worst of times.
Cooking & Heating Fuels
There are all kinds of fuels that fit all kinds of lifestyles. With any luck, we’re availing ourselves of multiple types, with backup methods planned for both cooking and varied ways to generate and maximize heating.
We want our stockpiles of fuels to expand past our stockpiles of foods in case it is possible to harvest more, and in case we end up expending more than anticipated.
If we rely on wood, it’s even more important that we stockpile to excess. If our primary tools – or our bodies – go down, our harvest rate will, too.
There are also all kinds of scenarios that also make it impossible or undesirable to leave home or generate noise.
If all we have is the bare minimum to get through, any delay in harvesting more can lead to burning raw woods, which hugely increases our risk of fires along with a few other undesirable conditions, or going cold. Deep stockpiles of fuel wood are a must if we rely on it.
Ammo
I can manufacture many things. If I live in the right place, I can even manufacture black powder and cast bullets. However, manufactured ammo (or components) tends to be more efficient, particularly if we’re talking about a world where we’re crazy busy.
That said, and acknowledging that I’m saying it’s totally okay to exceed our basic total-coverage storage, we do not want to go too crazy on this one at the expense of being able to easily weather everyday minor and major disruptions like outages, medical costs, decreased income, unemployment, replacing a fridge-freezer right after shelling the deductible for both home and auto, etc.
Remember, even the super-duper high-speed military elitists don’t always come home from combat. We don’t want to rely on being the better guy in a gunfight to eat, so we don’t want to bottom out the scale with imbalance on this one.
Tools & Equipment
The hardware each of us can and will make use of is even more solidly dependent on our storage space, location, and skills than ammo, fuels, and ability to source animal proteins. The tools that make sense for us to stock, and to overstock with excesses, revolves around the efficiency of manufacturing and the efficiency of making do with alternatives. That, too, is specific to each individual.
We do want backups of tools we use and can expect to use more if we’re unemployed, trying to stretch budgets further, or in any significant collapse scenario.
That’s tools we use, and that we expect to use more if our usual revenue and supply streams dry up.
If we have never felled a tree, live in an apartment/condo, have never located deer/pig/rodent sign and harvested that wildlife, live somewhere with about 6 trees per house, have never gone backpacking or multi-day paddling, live somewhere with tight fish and game limits, and-or have never gardened much, there are whole worlds worth of “must have” hardware we might as well not bother with, let alone spend resources on backups and excesses.
We’re better served extending our balanced storage and financial readiness while we gain the skills.
(For those who are still waiting for them, stick canning jar lids, water filters, lights, construction/repair kits, and fire-making supplies in this category – they’re situationally dependent and aren’t getting separate listings.)
Soap & Cleaners
Body to kitchen, clothing to gear, most soaps and cleaning products can be had fairly inexpensively and in compact forms with decent shelf life. There are many that multi-purpose across genres.
Homemade may appeal, especially if the perennial supplies and oils are already present. Most of us assume we’ll be working harder than ever if we end up living off our supplies, though. Go ahead and have extras stocked to lessen the workloads.
Balancing Excesses
While there are things that absolutely rate being stocked to excess of our balanced storage, and many have value for barter both in everyday life and definitely emergencies, we still want to apply some thought to how over we stock and balance within reason of our present situation.
Sometimes we’re better served extending our everyday-emergency and self-reliance capabilities than having an extra 18 months of soap and six seasons worth of canning ingredients.
Stocking to excess applies to financial readiness as well. Many preps won’t actually save us while the rest of the world is spinning as usual. They can help, but it’s limited aid.
Prep for the most-likely events first, and cover them well. Build up rainy day caches and savings, and then, when we’re at a level we’re comfortable with, we can start intentionally and deliberately unbalancing our preps with excesses.

How I Finally De-Cluttered My Tiny Bedroom
http://fashion-trendin.com/how-i-finally-de-cluttered-my-tiny-bedroom/
How I Finally De-Cluttered My Tiny Bedroom
I have a very, very small bedroom. It’s nothing out of the ordinary by tiny-New-York-bedroom standards, but that doesn’t make it feel any less cramped. I also have a queen-sized bed, which takes up such a disproportionate amount of space it looks like a helicopter landing pad. To complicate things further, the room isn’t perfectly square and has a radiator permanently affixed to one of the most awkwardly-shaped “corners,” thus relegating the placement of said helicopter landing pad to the least space-efficient configuration possible. The cherry on top of all this is that I’m not exactly Marie Kondo.
Note: While Tova didn’t say anything about my bedding, I decided to remove the wool throw at the bottom of my bed and swap in white pillowcases for a cleaner “after” photo. I still love and use the tie-dye silk pillowcases pictured in the “before” photo, though.
I hit a wall (literally — I stubbed my toe against my bedroom wall while trying to navigate around a pile of stuff) about a month ago and decided something had to change. The contents of my tiny room were starting to crowd in on me, like that scene in Star Wars when they’re in the garbage compactor. I needed to find a way to rearrange the puzzle pieces so everything fit in such a way that I no longer felt on the verge of suffocation. But savvy organization does not come naturally to me, nor does spatial reasoning. I’m more of a “squish things into any available cavity” kind of person, which I’ll admit isn’t optimal when it comes to matchbox living.
To make up for my lack of talent in this regard, I reached out to professional organizer Tidy Tova (who came highly recommended by Amelia). I immediately knew I was in good hands when she responded to my email and referenced her “wellspring of tidying knowledge.” A wellspring was exactly what I needed. We arranged a time to meet up at my apartment, where she examined every nook and cranny of my room with the practiced precision of a surgeon. Like all doctors with good bedside manners, she broke the news to me gently: “It definitely needs some work. But it’s nothing we can’t fix.”
To remedy the situation, Tova prescribed a targeted organizational regimen, which I’ve subsequently christened the “Small Room De-Cluttering Protocol.” If you, too, live in a tiny bedroom and find yourself overwhelmed by the task of figuring out how to make it look as spacious as possible, I suggest giving it a shot. Read Tova’s advice and how I implemented it below, and peep the before and after photos for proof of progress.
1. Put as Much as Possible Behind Closed Doors
“Exposed items look cluttered so do your best to always shut your drawers and cabinet doors — and invest in closed storage as opposed to open shelving,” Tova told me. For me, the main obstacle to this suggestion happened to be the second biggest piece of furniture in my room: my chrome shelving unit. The unit was a leftover purchase from my previous apartment. My roommates and I used it to store cereal boxes and Tupperware and other kitchen items, but when we moved last winter, our new kitchen had a panty, so its original purpose was rendered obsolete. I decided to hang onto it as a temporary storage facility for my folded clothes until I had time to find a legit wardrobe. Spoiler alert: the legit wardrobe never manifested.
A kick in the proverbial glutes courtesy of Tova was what I needed to finally make it happen. I swapped out the chrome unit for a white cabinet from Ameriwood. It fit perfectly in my weird little nook, supplied a lot more space for storage and made my whole room look less cluttered thanks to the fact that I no longer had open shelving.
2. Maximize Your Space With Hooks
“Don’t go overboard, though,” Tova warned. “Hooks are storage meccas, but piling layers of clothing and accessories onto them will create a pile of things that not only looks awful but also isn’t easy to access.” To which I replied: “I feel like you’ve known me all my life.”
Tova visibly shuddered when I mentioned I had a spare pack of those stick-on plastic hooks you can buy at Duane Reade, so I took things to the next level and installed a real, honest-to-goodness, metal hook rack from The Container Store with a real, honest-to-goodness power drill. It’s the perfect thing for hanging my ever-expanding collection of mini bags, which were previously relegated to the confines of a poorly-organized bin. Who needs art when you have bags! Speaking of art…
3. Keep Small Wall Decor Down to a Minimum
“Less is more, and a wall covered in photos or postcards can look super cluttered,” said Tova. Fortunately I was not a major perpetrator of this de-cluttering rule, although I did have a framed illustration of my grandmother I’d been meaning to hang on my wall for…oh…about a year. Tova performed the honors within five minutes of stepping foot inside my room.
4. Keep Windowsills and Countertops Bare
“If you can, avoid putting tons of loose, trinket-y things all over windowsills and countertops,” Tova instructed. “They will always look cluttered.” I only have one windowsill in my room that isn’t blocked by my helicopter-sized bed, and sure enough, it was absolutely covered in things — beauty products, allergy medicine, jewelry, sunglasses, candles, safety pins — you name it. Tova suggested purging as many non-necessities as possible (or at least putting the less attractive stuff in my nightstand) and installing a shelf on my wall for extra counter space. I put up an acrylic one from The Container Store.
5. Take Advantage of Hidden Storage Areas
I already take AMPLE advantage of the space under my bed (I don’t even want to tell you how much stuff is under there), but Tova came up with the genius idea of putting my foam roller and exercise mat — two necessities for my tightly-wound hamstrings — behind my bed on top of the blocked windowsill. The perfect sneaky hiding space for something I absolutely need but absolutely can’t stand to look at all the time.
6. Be Realistic
“Strive for a version of tidiness that is attainable in reality,” Tova emphasized. “You live in your space, so to some extent it will look lived-in. Keep your expectations realistic and be kind to yourself! The best thing that you can do is truly hone in on the items that you love and get rid of the rest. I dare you to create a ‘one in, one out’ rule. I do it in my own life and it’s challenging but thrilling.” This sentiment was comforting when I admitted to myself that even though I was serious about making the visible areas of my bedroom look neat, the underside of my bed was a whole different potato. I decided my realistic version of tidiness is one in which the monsters under my bed roamed free, and that’s okay.
What are your best tiny room organization tips? I’m all ears.

If you like these ideas feel free to subscribe and check out this video for a deeper explanation and examples of each: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA9k4M4xZRs

I've gained a lot of valuable information from Reddit and would like to do my part on maybe helping others out.Short background: I'm 18. I'll skip the bullshit like saying "I sold candy in high school blah blah." I've done a few businesses in the past, mostly all importing. Tried dropshipping, like most, I didn't achieve success with that. One of my importing ventures was relatively successful for a 14-year-old, I sold Virtual reality goggles before the US market got flooded with them (perfect timing). Other than that, I had just been doing small jobs on the side like junk removal, building websites, misc. stuff I could do, along with small imports operations which were sometimes successful.I had been cutting grass, and Lord I hated that. I told myself that if I can get a business going before grass season comes I will not force myself to do it. I was making about $800 a month doing it.Without getting too specific, here are the basics. It is an automotive related product that needs to be replenished every week to 2 weeks like clockwork. I source it from a manufacturer I met offline, but you can almost always find a manufacturer for what you are looking for on Alibaba. My first order was $1200. Margins are pretty good -- about 130% and each unit sells for $200+. It's a pretty large product, so shipping is expensive. When I get enough money to do a large order by sea freight my margins will be about 250%. The shipping costs nearly as much as the product.I sell my product to local shops. I have 4 shops I sell to. I have become these shop's main supplier and they only order from me now. The people I sell to are no-nonsense, no-bullshit type people, and I was originally pretty nervous about reaching out and trying to acquire them as customers. However, I quickly overcame this. Age is only a problem if you make it one, you shouldn't use it as an excuse. I look my age, but I have confidence and know what I'm talking about. I'm friendly, I know how to talk, and I know how to assure my customers and let them have confidence in my company. This is very important. Although you probably know this, a strong handshake, looking your customer in the eyes, having good posture, and speaking with authority will all help the customer have confidence in you. I reached out to 3 shops, and actually (very surprisingly) 2 of them gave me a chance. I acquired the other two (smaller) shops from referrals from the first two shops. At this moment, this is all I can handle. Now, to some lessons I've learned.Don't grow too fast. When I used to read this, I dismissed it. I always thought you should grow as fast as possible. Though I did not lose any of my customers, I did come close to losing one because of my other new customers. My short advice is to grow as fast as you can WHILE maintaining the same level of service and quality as you did before.Keeping inventory in stock and logistics can be a major bitch.Again, I also used to think, why doesn't he just order more product. However, it is more complex than this. I've run out of my product --when my customers have needed it ASAP-- two times. I was trying to maximize my cash flow and stay lean, therefore keeping a lower amount of product. I was still very cautious and had a good plan. But, things can get screwed up real quick. My supplier told me she had it in stock, but she didn't get it out until 4 days later. Didn't have problems with shipping in this order. The next time I ran out, I actually ordered before I was out and my supplier sent it asap, but it got delayed in shipping. My product is super simple, easy to see it's not contraband, yet it still got stuck in customs for 3 days. Man was I pissed. What the hell are they doing with it? It's not a liquid, doesn't have batteries, and is just an extremely simple product. But they still held it, and there is nothing I could do about it. I learned from this and gathered up all the money I could to put in an order big enough to prevent me from running out again on such short notice. My advice is to be careful trying to stay too lean, acknowledge that shipping can screw you and you may not get your package on the expected date, and have a plan for logistics.Be upfront and honest with your customers, it goes a long way. This saved me from losing a customer. When I was out of inventory, I didn't make excuses, I called and told my customer exactly what was going on and apologized to him that I wasn't going to be able to get the product to him right then. He understood and told me that he greatly appreciated my efficient communication and honesty. My advice would be to communicate problems with customers and be honest and upfront.Give discounts for when needed.I gave a discount to my customer when I ran out, and this definitely helped my customer accept the problem and understand. My advice is pretty self-explanatory here.Learn to sellI touched on this a little before. Appearance, confidence, and trust are the most important factors in my opinion. If you look, talk, and act professional, you will be seen as a professional. Know a lot about your product even the little specifics. Be genuine and friendly! People like to do business with people they like. Learning to make small talk will help you a lot with that. Finally, don't be nervous. If you are nervous, they most likely will see that which means they probably won't have too much confidence in you or your company.Build a brand.Don't just import! Build a company and a brand name. Build a name people can trust. Build a company that people will automatically associate with quality and exceptional service. Believe it or not, customers look at the packaging of your products, even if it is a B2B product like mine. Just a sticker with your company info and product info helps separate yourself. Don't get stock products from Alibaba, customize certain parts of it, and no that does not mean just slapping a logo on it. My product is customized to my specifics by my manufacturer. Thankfully they had a low MOQ! Needless to say, make sure you have a quality product. I got lucky because the manufacturer I met offline does make quality products. Just beware there is a lot of crap products and suppliers on Alibaba.Finding a product to sell (what I was always stumped on)In my opinion, this is the hardest part of starting a business and is what I always got stuck on. My advice would be to go about your normal life for a couple of weeks, maybe visit more local businesses (all different kinds), and try to find out if there is anything you could sell to them. (I prefer selling a product because I don't want my time to be associated with the amount of money I make. Also since I will be entering college soon and won't have time to do a service business--and really don't want to have to hire employees. In my opinion, selling a product is just less time consuming but they each have their pros and cons-- just my preference!) If you identify something, estimate what you can source it for on Alibaba and try to estimate what the local business is getting it for. Please note:Although this may sound easy and simple, it's not. I constantly run into other problems, and I could definitely still fail if I'm not careful. Most of the time you will need at least some experience in the industry and a few connections, although I would say I had the absolute bare minimum. You will need to be able to sell, research, and do your due diligence. You will need to be able to separate your company from others and stand out. You will need to find a quality product with good margins and that is preferably replenishable each month. It's not easy, I spent about two to three months on the front end getting everything together. However, this is not to say it's impossible, if you have the drive, then you can start any business you want.I just wrote this up real quick, so excuse any typos or sloppiness. Even though this is pretty basic, hopefully, some of you can get some ideas from this. I know I was so tired of seeing all these drop shipping, affiliate, etc posts. With a B2B business like this, you know your customers and they know you, which, in my opinion, means your business is more stable, consistent, and long term. But, I'm not here to bash other business models-- if it works for you, then Godspeed! If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I'm not selling anything and don't have a blog or anything of the sort. I will not give any more specifics on the product.

“Take the leap! Quit your day job and be your own boss!” Following this type of entrepreneurial advice comes with a fair share of risk.
Dont be afraid of doing this – customers will understand.

Our world has changed enormously in ten, twenty and fifty years. It’s night and day from a hundred years ago. How we reach each other and share information is mind blowing. We now know things about illness, waste, and chemicals that make us shudder a little at the past. We’ve seen fisheries and industries rise and collapse.
However, some things have stagnated.
In many ways, mainstream food production is one of those areas. We may use GPS and computers to help us source, plan and site things, but largely we’re doing it the same way we were at the cusp of the Green Revolution. Even small home gardens are regularly set up much the way a farm and large-scale crops are, and have been since the 1940’s and earlier.
We largely grow in straight rows of the same thing, in big squares of bare earth, walking or driving up and down those rows throughout the season.
I’m a fan of history and historic methods, and the lessons we can take from old ways. I’m a huge fan of things that stand the test of time – like the venerable revolver and 1911. Some things, however, don’t age all that well, and some things require a set infrastructure.
In a personal crisis or a nation-altering event, we may lose access to the cheap fuels and chemicals that allow us to grow that way. We can increase our capabilities and resilience by changing that, sometimes in very simple little ways. It starts with breaking out of those boxes we’ve grown up with.
Capitalizing on Contours
Whether it’s large grain or orchard terraces or a small backyard garden, a steep hill or a patch that appears mostly flat, working with natural contours can significantly aid us in reducing both labor and physical inputs in our gardens, no matter what gardening method we choose, tractor to hand tools.
One, we’re not fighting the shape the land wants to be (or has adapted to). Two, those contours make excellent use of rainwater.
In many case, even bare-earth tractor-farmed plots are oriented crossing the face of a hill. It keeps rain from sluicing off our hill, which limits our irrigation needs and keeps more soil in place. Add in raised beds, key-lines, small trenches, berm-swale sets, or beds and materials designed to help further slow that water as it runs down the slope, absorb more of it, and reduce its evaporation, and we can further limit the time, effort, and pumped water of irrigating.
Finding the contour of land can be accomplished with a few sticks, some string, and something relatively heavy – or, you can stick your standard construction level on the cross spar of an A frame.
The frame is fixed. It “faces” the slope, with the heavy thing (or bubble) tilting or hanging straight. When it tilts, you’re at a different elevation. You scoot one foot until it hangs straight. Mark that spot for both feet, pivot your A-frame on one foot, and adjust the other until your string hangs straight and even between them again. Then you mark that spot, too. Repeat across the area you’re mapping. That’s the dig-build-plow line.
Really, that’s it. That’s as complicated as it has to be.
Mark out how wide you want your rows working uphill or downhill, including the width of any bounded-bed or terrace-wall materials and tire or foot space, move down, and repeat the process of finding the contour line.
Sometimes hardscaping or construction will be required, timbers or longer-lasting CMU to hold the “terrace” line. Sometimes you can do straight earthworks, whether it’s a home orchard berms or terracing for larger-scale production. In other cases, such as the still-bare and the straw-mulched veggie beds above, you can go totally “unbounded” and just build up or dig in as-is.
Maximizing Space
Sometimes in the name of mechanical efficiency, we lose usable space. The quarter-acre pond above is one example of this. An undulating star increases the “edge” or “margin”, and doubles the amount of plantable space in comparison to a circle that covers the same area. Even if the “star” was reduced to fit within the margins of that circle, a designer can get 1.25-1.5 times the plantable space on the edges.
That’s just the defined edges of a pond. The star can then be replicated moving away from that pond with obligate and facultative plants filling in each level by height.
Even the shape we prune our perennials to can affect how much yielding surface they offer.
In comparing hedgerow styles, a traditional or conventional hedge with a “flat” face loses a quarter to half the sun-catching capability and harvestable area of shrubs or trees that are left with rounded individual faces. That difference increases further when the tops, too, are trimmed to round or spear upward.
Add in an undulating planting scheme (zig-zagging instead of straight line) that takes half again the surface area (say, 6’ deep instead of 4’ for a line of shrubs) and you not only reap the increased surface area per plant, you increase the number of plants you can fit, just like in the pond example.
Rethink Access
On the small scale of gardening, there are all kinds of ways to maximize planting space. In many cases, it’s by eliminating as much access area as possible. Circular “wagon wheel” and “pie” garden designs do this well, but there are other options.
We’ll reap the biggest benefits – ground level or raised – by making those footpaths permanent. When the beds stay in the same places, they aren’t compacted. That allows for better water infiltration and aeration, which limits how much of our irrigation runs off or evaporates from the surface. It also allows roots to expand faster and easier, making for healthier crops.
However, we reap the spacing benefits and limited seasonal compaction even if we do re-till seasonally or annually and shift where our “beds” are within our growing space.
Congestion Planting
We can also gain space and reduce compaction by altering how we plant inside our conventional square corners.
In a 12’x6’ area, if I plant something with a one-foot spread in single rows (so many people still do) and use a 1’ walkway, I can fit three rows – 36 plants. By changing to a “bed” system with 1’ walkways outside a 4’ central bed, I can squish those rows together and add a fourth – 48 plants.
By planting that bed in a staggered or diagonal grid instead, I only get 42 primary plants, but I also gain 12 generally 6”x12” spaces from the undulations.
That could be an additional 12 plants by controlling spread for edible chickweed and mallow, or it’s a dozen marigolds and thyme to encourage pollinators and discourage pests. In corner spots it might be sinking a little trough for chives. Or, each space could hold 8-18 turnips or beets or garlic heads, a strawberry plant, a few large onions, or 10-24 radishes or spring onions. All kinds of options.
Those options and increased yields scale, up or down. Those of us who prefer 30-36” wide beds gain similar benefits even with that smaller bed width per area.
Shipping pallet gardens and 4’ or 5’ square “patchwork” or “chessboard” beds defined by footpaths of stone, boards, or mulch are other options. Both can also make use of very small and odd-shaped yards, just like half-circle and circular beds, or contour-hugging beds.
If your reach is long enough, shipping pallets can be slid together to make longer beds as well, with the boards providing nice kneeling spaces between plants without compacting soil, and have the added benefit of limiting some of the weed space.
Mandalas & Keyholes
Another example of maximizing space is a “keyhole” bed. Traditional keyholes are round, but the concept applies to square-based beds as well.
The general concept is to eliminate walkways as much as possible. The slot and bulge of the keyhole allows access to most or all of the bed with an absolute minimum of space used.
Like some of the other round-bed methods, it also has the advantage of creating a garden space that can be lovely as well as practical – nothing wrong with multipurposing.
Images: Toby Hemenway, Gaia’s Garden – Mandala gardens & suntrap incorporating keyhole access concepts to increase planting space and efficiency.
Efficiency for the beds can be further increased by combining them into a system of keyholes, or mandala gardens. The general premise of a keyhole can also be extended in length to fit needs. They can be further nested within hugelkulture mounds or shrub and tree lines to create a suntrap or develop a windbreak.
They can be ground-level, bounded or unbounded, raised using timbers or bricks, or, for a little reuseit fun, made from things like salvaged filing cabinets and their drawers, or using storage totes to create sub-irrigated containers in a system.
There’s also an “African” or “composter” style of keyhole bed. In that case, the round access nob is filled with an in-situ composting tube.
Space-wise I find them less efficient. Since they lose that central access point, they have to be smaller because you have to be able to work around the outer edges. That also takes away the opportunity to overlap them into a larger system.
That said, they are fantastic for arid environments.
Breaking the Garden Box
There are lots of options for maximizing our production, with pro’s and con’s to each, individually and in comparison to a square plot with straight-line rows or beds. These are really just a few, and really just a snapshot of each.
For many of us, a combination of contouring, congestion planting in beds or conventional field plots, and a variety of beds and smaller containers are part of our continuing and expanding systems. Incorporating multiple methods and styles allows us to work most efficiently and reap the most benefits by crop type and section of land. The variety is like having a well-stocked pantry or gear rig.
They’re all just tools on our belts, though. We have to use them to know them. Getting started, now, whether it’s new-new or just a new style or method, breaking ground or expanding, is always going to be the only one-size-fits-all when it comes to growing.
