Oroperipatus tiputini: A new species of Velvet Worm from the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Velvet Worms, Onychophora, are a unique group of elongate, soft bodied, many legged Animals, given phylum status and considered to be among the closest living relatives to the Arthropods. They are currently the only known phylum of Animals known entirely from terrestrial species, both living and fossil, although they may be related to the Lobopodans, an entirely marine group known only from Early Palaeozoic fossils. The 230 living Velvet Worm species are divided into two groups, the Peripatidae, found in the tropics of Central and South America, the Antilles Islands, Gabon, India, and Southeast Asia, and the Peripatopsidae, found in Chile, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand. All South American members of the Peripatidae are placed within a single clade, the Neopatida, which is further divided into two lineages, the 'Andean' genus Oroperipatus, and the 'Caribbean' lineage, comprising all other genera. Read the paper: (https://zse.pensoft.net/article/117952/) The new species is described from five male, three female, and three juvenile specimens collected in the vacinity of the Tiputini Biodiversity Station of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Orellana Province, Ecuador, between 2001 and 2023, as well as one youngling, which one of the female specimens gave birth to in captivity. The new species is named Oroperipatus tiputini, in reference to the location where it was discovered. Adult female specimens of Oroperipatus tiputini very between 46 and 65.3 mm in length, while the adult males are smaller at 22.7 to 39.8 mm. Females have between 37 and 40 pairs of legs, while the males have between 34 and 37, although one male specimen had a different number of legs on each side, with 35 legs on the right and 36 legs on the left. The species shows considable colour variation, with one adult male being a light brown colour with a faint rhomboid pattern, two adult males and one adult female being brown with orange diamonds, and another female (the one which produced a youngling) being a plain dark orange colour. The youngling itself was yellowish with a diamond pattern. All specimens were darked on their heads and antenae, had orange or brown legs, and a distinctive white band on the head. Most specimens of Oroperipatus tiputini were found on small herbaceous Plants within old growth, closed canopy upland forests around the Tiputini Biodiversity Station. Other specimens were found in leaf litter, or on the butress roots of trees to a height of about 70 cm above the ground. One specimen was found in a Bromiliad. The Worms were more active at night.

Puya venusta
Puyas belong to the Bromeliad Family, and they mostly occur along the Andes mountain range, from Colombia in the north down to Argentina and Chile in the south. This one is Puya venusta, from north-central Chile. When not in flower, its large clumps of silvery rosettes look a lot like those of Puya coerulea, also from Chile, but its amazing flowers are distinctive. When it emerges, the inflorescence sports little pink clubs jutting out from the main flower stalk, but the WOW factor comes in when the contrasting blue or purple tubular flowers protrude from the pink bracts. Our plant was a donation from Annie's Annuals, a well-known nursery in the San Francisco Bay Area. It had been planted in one of their demonstration beds, but it became too large to keep there, so we were happy to give it a permanent home.

Cryptid of the Day: Manta Man
Description: In 2013, several witnesses around Bustamante Park in Northern Chile reported seeing a winged man-like creature. Its name comes from its resemblance to a Manta Ray, though the creature is described as being over 6ft tall. One couple claimed to have seen the beast perched on top of San Francisco Church in Santa Isabel, and said it resembled a winged dog.

Cities by Impressiveness of Mountain Backdrop / Rut
by u/Gigitoe
After seeing the recent posts Cities with a better mountain backdrop than LA? ( u/odi3luck ) and This is a response to the LA mountain backdrop ( u/sam_woke ), I realized that I had the exact tools to answer a particularly niche but interesting question:
How do we quantify how impressive a city's mountain backdrop is?
To answer this question, we use rut, an indicator I developed back in the days to quantify how sharply or impressively the surroundings of a location rise above the location. (my research paper if you're interested)
Roughly speaking, rut works as follows:
The higher the mountains rise above a city, the more impressive they are, and the higher the rut.
The steeper the mountains rise above a city, the more impressive they are, and the higher the rut.
In the map shown, I measured the rut of every city with a population of over 100,000. Here's some cities in each tier and their corresponding rut values:
S tier - rut > 500 m (world-class, would visit for mountain views alone) -
Pokhara, Nepal (1358 m) | Chamonix, France (1336 m) [not on map; population too low] | Zermatt, Switzerland (904 m) [not on map] | Yosemite Valley, CA (617 m) [not on map] | Innsbruck, Austria (584 m)
A tier - rut between 200 to 500 m (impressive, but probably wouldn't visit just for mountain views)
Kathmandu, Nepal (482 m) | Almaty, Kazakhstan (478 m) | Santiago, Chile (469 m) | Provo, UT (429 m) | Tehran, Iran (349 m) | Lhasa, Tibet (325 m) | Monterrey, Mexico (268 m) | Tacoma, WA (245 m) | Kabul, Afghanistan (232 m)
B tier - rut between 100 and 200 m (mountains in close proximity, or big mountains further away)
Salt Lake City, UT (180 m) | Reno, NV (151 m) | Tucson, AZ (141 m) | Seattle, WA (137 m) | Vancouver, Canada (136 m) | Los Angeles, CA (117 m) | Milan, Italy (100 m)
C tier (glorified hills nearby, or distant mountains, or very distant big mountains) - rut between 25 and 100 m
Denver, CO (99 m; if only it had one more meter) | Tokyo, Japan (94 m) | Hong Kong (75 m) | Seoul, Korea (56 m) | Rome, Italy (48 m) | Knoxville, TN (39 m) | Beijing, China (37 m) | Sacramento, CA (30 m)
D tier (hills nearby, or glorified hills in the distance, or very distant mountains) - rut between 10 and 25 m
Istanbul, Turkey (24 m) | Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (23 m) | San Francisco, CA (22 m) | Quebec, Canada (17 m) | Mumbai, India (15 m) | Brisbane, Australia (12 m) | Pittsburgh, PA (10 m)
F tier (flat tier) - rut between 0 and 10 m
Syracuse, NY (7.4 m) | Birmingham, AL (5.2 m) | Dubai, UAE (5.0 m) | Columbus, OH (3.2 m) | Washington, DC (2.6 m) | Shanghai, China (2.4) | Paris, France (2.1 m) | London, UK (1.6 m) | New York City (0.7 m) | Chicago, IL (0.4 m)
So to answer the question, what cities have a better mountain backdrop than Los Angeles? Quite a lot... quite a lot.
Here's the data spreadsheet that was used to generate this map!
Edits: switched Vancouver to downtown measurement, added more cities, switched to steepness explanation instead of proximity explanation.
----------------
Note: rut measurements only consider rise above surroundings (relative height differences and steepness). They do not consider absolute elevation, nor the "aesthetics" of a mountain, nor visibility (or lack thereof) due to weather or smog.
This visualization was made possible with Google Earth Engine, MERIT DEM, and GeoNames.
If you like rut, you'll probably like its older brother jut even more. Jut is an indicator of  how impressive, spectacular, or badass a mountain is—considering both its height above surroundings and steepness. If you want to find the most impressive mountains near you or worldwide, you may find the link above to be useful.
Let us know if you have any questions or comments—I'm happy to address them!

Okay. I've been carried away by my headcanons about the families of the original «Mystery Ink» lately. I'll start with the basics.
Brad Chiles: I think he’s from a large family. He has two elder brothers and a younger sister. His father had a car repair shop where Brad worked in his spare time from solving secrets - this part-time job had a good effect on his ability to make traps — with his brothers. And also Brad’s mother was a nurse in the city hospital.
At the time of the second season, his father retired, giving the car repair shop to his eldest son, his mother died by the time Brad and Judy returned to the Crystal Cove. Brad's second brother works as an accountant in a large company/helps his elder brother do business by working with papers, and his younger sister got a job as a kindergarten teacher.
Bonus headcanon about Brad’s family: Fred sometimes stopped by the car repair shop of his biological father's family to repair the «Mystery Machine», and his father's elder brother noticed similarities between him and Brad, but was convinced of their final kinship after Brad and Judy returned to the Crystal Cave.
Judy Reeves: Her father was a sought-after lawyer, and her mother was a housewife. She has an elder sister who was married by the time of her disappearance, and a younger twin sister.
I'll explain now. I had a headcanon about that Judy was a kind of rebel/problem child in her family and that she was often put under house arrest, from which she successfully escaped, and her sisters were role models. This may be a kind of parallel with Daphne, but, in my opinion, it's a pretty funny headcanon, starring Judy and her twin sister, who are the complete opposite of each other. But it's not about that now.
At the time of the series, her elder sister works as an accountant, and the younger one got married and became a housewife, just like their mother. Meanwhile, their parents divorced: their mother stayed in the Crystal Cove, and their father left the city.
Cassidy Williams: Her family did not originally live in the Crystal Cove. They moved there from San Francisco when Cassidy was eight. Her father was a policeman who was transferred to the Crystal Cove police station, and her mother, who previously worked on the radio, after moving got a job as a music teacher at the primary school where Cassidy began to study. She also has a sister who is 14-15 years younger than her and practically does not remember her at the time of the series.
Also at the time of the series, her father retired, her mother still works at an elementary school, and her younger sister studies in San Francisco.
Bonus headcanon about Cassidy's family: Her father taught her and her sister to shoot a gun when they've grown up enough for that (we remember episode 11 of season 2 and realise that Ricky could be afraid of Cassidy’s father because of the presence of a gun under his side).
And finally, Ricky Owens: For some reason it seems to me that he was brought up by a single mother who had to work three jobs after Ricky's father died in a car accident. Yes, you can kick me for that. Professor Pericles appeared when Ricky was about eight. His mom allowed Professor Pericles to stay so that Ricky wouldn't be lonely when she was not at home, we understand that she allowed this parrot to stay was a big mistake but now it's not about that.
But he has a few more relatives besides his mother. For example, a paternal grandfather, from whom Ricky inherited a van, which later became known as the «Enigma Machine». He also had an aunt on his mother's side living in the city near the Crystal Cove, whom he had never seen. But as a child, he was on good terms with his cousin, her daughter, who was often sent to live with them because of problems at home. She's four years older than him. With the appearance in his life of Professor Pericles and the secrets that had to be solved, they distanced themselves. At the time of his disappearance, she was studying at the Faculty of History at Darrow College.
At the time of the series, Ricky's cousin works as a history teacher in high school and moved to his mother to help her with house.
Bonus headcanons about Ricky’s family: His grandfather was allergic to birds and he was the main Rickidy shipper.
That's all. I hope you like it!

Do the recent or right-now-ongoing crazy global weather scare you? Bother you? Interest you?
I'm pulling this from various media sources, because there is so much crazy weather happening now, or that has happened within the last couple of weeks, it seems like no single media source is picking it up.
From Heatmap AM:
Houston’s floods – More than 400 people in and around Houston, Texas, evacuated their homes over the weekend due to flooding. At least one person, a child, was killed. In one nearby county, more than 21 inches of rain fell over five days last week. The rain has tapered off but the cleanup has just begun.
Brazil’s rain – In Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, days of intense rain caused the Guaiba River to overflow and flood more than 340 cities, including the region’s capital of Porto Alegre. At least 78 people are dead and more than 115,000 have been forced to evacuate. One climatologist calledthe catastrophe “a disastrous cocktail” of climate change and the El Niño effect. “It looks like a scene out of a war,” said Rio Grande do Sul governor Eduardo Leite.
Chile’s fires – Fires in Chile’s Valparaiso region, fueled by an intense heat wave and enduring drought, have killed at least 51 people and burned more than 64,000 acres.
Kenya’s deluge – Flooding and landslides in Kenya from unrelenting rainfall have killed more than 200 people. It is still raining and the weather is forecast to worsen throughout the month of May.
Southeast Asia’s heat wave – A lengthy heat wave has shattered temperature records across Southeast Asia, forcing many schools to close. One weather historian called the heat wave “the most extreme event in world climatic history.”
From the Associated Press (AP):
A weekend spring storm that drenched the San Francisco Bay area and closed Northern California mountain highways also set a single-day snowfall record for the season on Sunday (May 5) in the Sierra Nevada. The wet weather system had mostly moved out of the state by Sunday morning, but officials warned that roads would remain slick after around two feet (60 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas of the Sierra. “Did anyone have the snowiest day of the 2023/2024 season being in May on their winter bingo card?” the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab asked on the social platform X. The 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) of snowfall on Sunday beat the second snowiest day of the season — March 3rd — by 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters), according to the lab.
From Yale Climate Connections:
For the first time since the 2010s, a high-risk outlook for severe weather (level 5 of 5) has been issued for parts of the Great Plains. The outlook was put in place at 8 a.m. EDT Monday, May 6, and updated at 12:30 p.m. EDT Monday by the NOAA/National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, as a busy few days of severe weather moved into high gear. Dozens of tornadoes could erupt by midweek, including in and near Oklahoma on Monday and across a broad swath of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio River valleys on Wednesday. Many of the worst tornado U.S. outbreaks of recent years have played out across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast, but multiple rounds of twisters have hammered the Plains since late April, taking at least seven lives and wreaking what will no doubt be hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
From Wikipedia:
On 16 April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in the United Arab Emirates, affected cities of mainly Dubai and Sharjah, the northern Emirates, and different areas of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. According to the National Center for Meteorology (United Arab Emirates) , this was the country's heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years. The floods in the Emirates were a part of the greater Persian Gulf floods.
