But did Star Trek give us an Afrofuturist utopia? Did DS9 get a movie I haven't heard of? No one is denying the impact of Star Trek, but the entire franchise put together has fewer black characters of note than just the first Black Panther movie.
Do you seriously think making one entry to your established formula franchise in 2018 with a predominantly black cast is 'doing more' than writing an explicitly and confrontationally post-racialised future where bridge officers were Black, Japanese, and Russian on US network TV in 1966?
#Star Trek is certainly not perfect but it engages seriously with ethical issues and what society should be#it holds up a critical mirror to contemporary reality and challenges it#it is aspirational and posits genuine transformational change#the MCU is status quo American propaganda where only villains ever meaningfully question the system#and the most radical idealism possible to conceive is the Right People being in charge of that system and nothing otherwise needs changing#they only do anything because it's safe and ultimately unchallenging#if they didn't think it was safe the corporate overlords wouldn't have done it#they did it because genre fiction has been breaking this ground for the last sixty years and now it's thoroughly ploughed#but you just dismiss that out of hand as if there's anything that isn't mercenary behind it#US imperialism is in the bedrock of the mcu and that does actually matter
