Time Travel Question : Murder and Disappearance Edition I
Given that Judge Crater, Roanoke, and the Dyatlov Pass Incident are credibly solved, though not 100% provable, I'm leaving them out in favor of things ,ore mysterious. I almost left out Amelia Earhart, but the evidence there is sketchier.
Some people were a little confused. Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury are the Princes in the Tower.

Vivian’s full name is Vivian Gandillon - the writer created Vivian's character as a descendant of the medieval Gandillon family who, in the late 16th-century France, were accused and executed for being werewolves. The term “loup-garou” is used several times in the movie, meaning werewolf in French.
This is a painting of Henri Boguet, the French judge who recorded the Gandillons’ story and took part in their trial.

Blood and Chocolate: An Adaptation in Name Only
Previously: Section 0 - Introduction
Section 1 – The Book
Preface: The 1997 novel Blood and Chocolate is DENSE. The paperback only spans 264 pages, but the story follows the coming of age of a dynamic and flawed female protagonist, encompasses ancient werewolf legends and laws, goes in depth into lycanthropic politics, and also features a love triangle, a teenage soap opera, a forbidden romance, and a goddamned murder mystery.
Summary: Vivian Gandillon is a 15-year-old werewolf. A year after her father was killed in the fire that destroyed their home, Vivian is lost and grieving while her leaderless pack falls apart in the Maryland suburbs that they fled to. Aiden, a tall, gentle human classmate attracts her attention and presents Vivian an escape from the tangled, animalistic world of werewolves. Keeping her lycanthropy secret, Vivian begins to date Aiden, defying the laws of her people. Vivian is pressured to break things off by her mother, her five delinquent age-mates, and the would-be leader, Gabriel. Gabriel, a 24 year-old welder, is attractive, intimidating and the object of intense romantic competition. He, more than any other, tries to convince Vivian that her dalliance with a human is dangerous, eventually revealing that he speaks from painful personal experience. The story twists and turns, tearing Vivian and Aiden apart while pulling Vivian and Gabriel together. In the end, through many trials, Vivian discovers that she can’t escape either her human or her animal nature, and must embrace both.
Themes: Vivian’s central character arc finds her struggling with what she wants as opposed to what she needs. At the opening of the novel, Vivian wants to escape the violent chaos of her pack, with its painful history and uncertain future. She finds that escape in Aiden, with his Beaver Cleaver family, his lovably quirky friends, and his sweetness and simplicity. However, when the time comes to reveal the hidden aspects of her identity, Aiden can’t handle it. Despite his supernatural curiosity, he cannot accept the supernatural when it presents itself to him. His rejection sends Vivian into a tailspin of self-destruction that only ends when she accepts the love that Gabriel is offering, a love that honors all of what she is. To ultimately find happiness, Vivian had to give up what she wanted and embrace what she needed. In addition to this, there is also a great deal of time in the novel spent contrasting the human and the animal sides of Vivian’s nature. Her two suitors Aiden and Gabriel represent, respectively, the human and the animal. Scenes of Vivian socializing with Aiden and his human friends are juxtaposed with scenes of Vivian’s werewolf pack brutally vying for dominance. The very title of the book is a reference to this dichotomy, Blood – representing Vivian’s animal desires, and Chocolate – representing Vivian’s human longings. Throughout the novel, Vivian swings between these two extremes, at one point drinking herself into a heartbroken stupor over Aiden, then blacking out and waking up in her bed next to a severed hand. She tries, in her romance with Aiden, to balance her human and animal sides, but she only achieves that balance with Gabriel, a partner who also exists in the grey area between man and beast.
Highs: These are the aspects of the novel have captivated my imagination and kept this book in my collection for so long.
o Werewolf Society: It’s a damn shame that Klause hasn’t written more stories within this framework, because it is absolutely ripe for exploration and development. The enormous potential here is one of the primary reasons why this book has held my fascination for so long and why I have written so much (published and unpublished) fanfiction for it.
o Flawed Characters: No one who’s read the book will tell you that Vivian is perfect or even likeable 100% of the time, but it fits with her characterization as a grieving, lost teenager and serves to make her all the more like an actual person. Most of the characters are like that, with their good qualities balanced or sometimes overwhelmed by their less savory sides. It makes the fictional world feel richer and more realistic, despite the supernatural elements.
o Consequences: The characters in this novel make real, awful mistakes, and they face lasting consequences for them. One of Vivian’s mistakes – maiming Astrid while defending her mother, directly leads to Vivian’s ex, Rafe, getting sucked into Astrid’s revenge plot, leading to Vivian being framed for murder and the eventual executions of both Rafe and Astrid, during which Vivian is accidentally shot by Aiden.
CONSEQUENCES! They make the story more believable, more suspenseful, and this novel, with its cast of flawed characters, would not have worked without them.
o Assertive Female Protagonist: Vivian is refreshingly frank about her desires, which is very noticeable in her courtship with Aiden. Aiden assumes that he has to advance their physical relationship slowly so as to not frighten or offend Vivian, while Vivian urges him on. She doesn’t hesitate when going after what she wants, and she’s not ashamed of her sexuality. It’s a welcome change from the restrictions that western society places on female desire, and I’d like to see more characters like her.
Lows: Blood and Chocolate is far from perfect, but, in my opinion, there are three glaring flaws in this book, and I would be remiss if I didn’t address them.
o The Esme Question: The first point is one that, once seen, cannot be unseen. Vivian’s mother, Esme, is one of the women competing for Gabriel’s affections at the beginning of the novel. It is established that they go on dates (“Saw your mother go into Tooley’s bar with Gabriel last night.” p. 18), but Klause is not explicit about how far their relationship has gone. This ambiguity leaves open a potentially disturbing possibility:
It is canonically possible that Gabriel had a sexual relationship with Esme and then moved on to sexually pursue her daughter, Vivian.
Personally, I can reasonably believe that Gabriel and Esme never progressed beyond idle flirting because:
a. Vivian strikes me as the type of person who would mark her mother’s sexual partners as “off limits”.
b. Up until just past the Ordeal scene, both Esme and Astrid are still fighting over Gabriel, implying that neither of them had really “won” him.
c. The possibility outlined above seems like it would be a bridge too far to be included in a YA novel, especially in the 90′s.
Your mileage may vary. I’ve seen reviews of the book whose negative ratings hinge on the fact that Gabriel dated Esme at all, irrespective of whether their relationship was sexual or not. Honestly? I can’t blame them. If the mere existence of this possibility squicks you out, then it’s likely going to sour the ending and ruin the rest of the book for you.
o The Age Differences: The second point is the least defensible. At the end of the novel, Vivian is 16 and Gabriel is 24. That minor/adult 8 year age gap constitutes a “yikes” in my part of the world. Klause skirts this by establishing that werewolf society has some stark differences with human society, namely that a 16 year old female is considered an adult by werewolf law. This is still a rather uncomfortable detail to be included in an American YA novel, and the older I get, the more uncomfortable it becomes.
In addition to the Vivian/Gabriel age gap, there is the even wider Astrid/Rafe age gap. Rafe is Vivian’s ex and age mate, although there are reasons to assume that he is slightly older than her. This places him somewhere in a probable 16-18 age range. He is canonically younger than 21, which makes him, according to werewolf law, not yet an adult. Astrid has a son who is also Vivian’s age, which places Astrid somewhere in her late 30’s to mid 40’s. In the book, Astrid and Rafe have a sexual relationship.
To be fair to Klause, this is framed in the novel as being toxic and ultimately destructive to both Astrid and Rafe. Near the end of the story, Rafe finally realizes that Astrid has been taking advantage of him, turning Rafe, in my opinion, into a tragic victim of manipulation.
Let me leave this segment with a PSA:
If you’re reading this and you’re underage, please don’t enter into a “relationship” with an adult. The adults in these scenarios in the real world are predators, and they’re preying on your inexperience and naïveté. They know that you probably won’t recognize relationship red flags and they think they can pressure you into doing unsafe and unhealthy things in the name of “love”. Stay safe, kids!
o Sexual Harassment: My third and final low point is one that I have very mixed feelings about. As a result, this is the longest segment of this post, so strap in. In the novel, many of the interactions between Vivian and male characters are inappropriately sexual. The most egregious offenders are the Five, Gabriel, and Aiden’s father. The Five, Vivian’s male werewolf peers, are crass, rude and arrogant. Led by Rafe, they display a lot of entitlement for Vivian’s affections. The most pointed (and gross) of these displays happens on p.41:
“You’re not Princess Wolf now,” Rafe growled behind her. “Wait too long and we’ll take what we want.”
That? Yeah, that’s a direct rape threat! Rafe also goes on to grope Vivian at her birthday party. He’s a peach! Gabriel’s harassment mostly takes the form of unwanted advances. It peaks after the Ordeal, the battle royale where Vivian accidentally wins the right to be Gabriel’s mate. In the aftermath, Gabriel corners Vivian in her kitchen, forces a non-consensual kiss on her and declares his intentions to court her. Aiden’s father is notable in the contrast he provides. Vivian only interacts with him once, when Aiden invites her to a family cookout. During this scene, he repeatedly leers at her, makes suggestive comments and on p. 79:
Vivian could hear the innuendo in Mr. Teague’s voice. It made her skin crawl.
However, if you compare Mr. Teague’s harassment to Gabriel, the Five and others, you’ll find that there is a significant difference in Vivian’s reaction. Vivian isn’t afraid to bite back at the Five’s harassment – scoring vivid revenge for Rafe’s groping when she injures his genitals. She tries to do the same to Gabriel when he forces a kiss on her, but he relents on his own. We see a similar dynamic when Esme snaps at Bucky, another male werewolf, who catcalls her in a bar. This forms a pattern which suggests that forceful sexuality is a feature of werewolf culture. Vivian confirms this the first time that she and Aiden kiss on p. 51:
“He was gentle. She hadn’t expected that. Kisses to her were a tight clutch, teeth, and tongue.”
And this is where my mixed feelings come in. I don’t condone the harassment that Vivian experiences, but I understand why Klause wrote it. Any author writing inhuman characters can’t simply tell us that they are inhuman, they have to show it. The forceful sexuality of the werewolf characters in this book is one way that Klause clearly shows that they are NOT human and serves as a contrast to the human characters. But where does Aiden’s dad fit into this? His harassment is milder than the Five’s or Gabriel’s, but it disgusts Vivian in a way that the other harassment didn’t. Why? Sexual harassment seems to be a constant feature of her pack life. This isn’t even the only time that an older man leers at her – on p. 115, in the same scene where Esme gets catcalled:
Some of those male eyes strayed to Vivian, too, and she preened at the thought of being a threat.
That’s a far cry from the skin-crawling disgust she felt with Mr. Teague, but it’s basically the same offense. What’s different? We find it in a conversation with him on p. 74:
“I would think a girl like you would go out with someone older.” He winked at Vivian. Like someone your age? Vivian thought, repelled by the man’s lack of loyalty to his son.
Vivian’s disgust stems from the fact that the man flirting with her is her boyfriend’s father. She’s shown to welcome sexual attention from other older men, and she has no problems handling more overt harassment, but the paternal disloyalty sickens her. The overt sexual harassment is there, and if it makes it impossible for you to enjoy the book, I don’t blame you. Your feelings are valid, and I’m not going to tell you that you’re wrong. Personally, I understand the authorial reasoning behind its inclusion, and its utility as a characterization tool, so it doesn’t prevent me from enjoying the story. Your mileage may vary.
Verdict: The 1997 novel Blood and Chocolate is flawed, but fascinating. It sets multifaceted characters into a tantalizing world of men and monsters, where the line between good and evil is blurred into nonexistence. It is, despite its problematic elements, my favorite book.

Sims 3: Wild Darlings
Wild Prom Night
We'll start the photo slide show with this one of the family's menagerie of magic gnomes hanging out together in their yard. Wonder what stories the 'Laundry Gnome' is telling.
Hello and welcome back to the Darling family home in Moonlight Falls where you enjoy musical entertainment from Ana, Dana and Korbin who love to play their guitars and bass. Please help yourselves to a glass of nectar and a serving of cheese plate made with fresh grapes from Champs Les Sims that Dana brought back France on her recent trip to there. Sit back and relax as Dana shares pictures of her first week back home from university including a couple of birthdays, high school prom romances and new career.
Rosalee in her new athletic outfit.
First off, let's all wish Dana's younger sister, Koralee a very happy teen birthday, who along with being a genius and having a great sense of humor now loves to read any book she can get her hands on. Koralee and her older brother, Korbin were also bitten by the high school prom romance bug and are now in the 'romantic interest' stage with one of their classmates. Korbin and his best friend, Hank Gandillon who is also a teen werewolf turned out to be the cutest couple of the prom which also happened to be the full moon.
Dana chatting with Noelle after delivering the novel she ordered from her. They quickly became friends.
Despite passing out from fear when her brother changed into his wolf form, Koralee had a great night, too and started a romantic relationship with fellow classmate, Nathanial Levin. Since Koralee is a three star celebrity, the paparazzi got her in trouble later by reporting that she had passed out. Koralee really is fine with her father and brother being werewolves but it's the changing from human to wolf part still terrifies her but she'll get used to it in time.
Dana entering one of the tomb rooms at that the Forgotten Burial Ground while looking for Jeannine's lost baseball.
Dana spent much of her first few days at home after graduating from university writing a science fiction novel for a merchant in France who wanted to buy a book from her. She then took the family's first trip to Champs Les Sim to deliver the finished novel to Noelle Saint James who also happened to be the nectar merchant at the nectary located on the outskirts of the town. Dana also harvested some nectar grapes to take home with her and purchased some shelves so where her mother, Ana could store the bottles of nectar she had collected during the many adventures she had in China and Egypt. Since Noelle gave Dana a huge discount on her purchases for being a celebrity, she also purchased a nectar maker so that someone could learn the skill back home. During her trip, Dana also helped the local general merchant, Jeannine Lambert by finding her lost baseball that had fallen down a hole there when she was playing catch with her father one day.
Ana in her new everyday 'senior' outfit.
Ana Darling also recently celebrated a birthday and has now reached her golden senior years. Since she loves her work as a 'Hit Movie Composer' in the music career, Ana has no plans of retiring at this time. She also took a short trip to Egypt to complete a challenge given to her by Miriam Hoppcraft, who is the leader of the local adventure club, who issued Ana an invitation to join the club but had to prove herself by first disarming a trap in one of the tombs in Egypt. Ana completed this task when she was asked by Farouk Rashid to disarm the traps in his basement that the previous owners had set down there. After completing the task, Ana found out why the traps were there when she investigate a hidden room with a staircase to a lower room that had two sarcophaguses. She accidently woke up one of the mummies down there when opening a treasure chest she found. Once the mummy goes back to bed, the downstairs area in Farouk's house should be safe as long as he doesn't open any treasure chests.
Ana looking for the switch to turn off the flame traps behind the wall as she begins her mission to disarm the traps in Farouk's basement.
That's all of the Darling family news for now. Someday, Koralee will take over the family pen for generation two but not until she graduates from high school. Until then Dana along with the rest of her family look forward to their next visit with you all.
Ana breaking the boulder she found behind a hidden door in Farouk's basement. Curiosity got the best of her and she decided to find out what was on the other side.
Ana found out why that boulder was at the top of the stairs when she woke up this mummy when she opened the treasure chest. She headed back up the stairs before the mummy could pick a fight with her. Author's note: I have had a Sim defeat this mummy but that only woke up a second mummy that was in the other sarcophagus but he could not win the fight with that one.
Have a great week everyone!

Hey did you know that they burned werewolf's and gays durning the time of the Salem witch trials too ;)
Yes. Moretic tells me about it a lot and I have a few tomes here that talk about it. Peter Stumpp was tried and executed as a werewolf in Germany. Word of it was passed to France…..and everyone lost their minds! Gilles Garnier, the Gandillon family, Jean Grenier. All executed as werewolves….now I won’t say they weren’t….but damn! They killed people who had odd sleeping patterns, who were hairy, who didn’t talk to others very much. They were killing themselves more than they were killing us!
The Beast of Gévaudan is a favorite though. That guy was killed TWICE! And when he was alive, it was livestock, guys who stupidly tried to fight it, and children stolen from open windows! HE knew how the werewolf business goes!
Another thing to note, the French wrote a familiar story during those times. It was about a little girl who meets a wolf on her way to her grandma’s house…….sound familiar? Ask yourself why Little Red Riding Hood didn’t panic when she met the wolf in the woods during the day but later that night as she prepared for bed, slowly (part by part) recognised the monster she mistook for a human being (her own grandmother, no less). Red Riding Hood is my favorite fairy tale.

✿ Does anyone in real life know about your RPing hobby and what, if anything, have they said about it?
My parents know, because for as long as I’ve been on the internet, they’ve known that I like to write and write with friends overseas. My dad still calls it fanfiction somtimes to other people, like he’s proud of me or something, and that’s enough to make me want to never talk to him again out of embarrassment, ha, but I deal with it. Because I truly do love writing more than anything. Other than that, my boyfriend knows, but he doesn’t care about it / ask questions and I don’t really like to tell him about it either. I’m not as embarrassed about RP as I used to be, but I still feel like it’s just something for me that other people wouldn’t really understand the mechanics of. The only times my boyfriend and I do acknowledge it is when I start talking about an RP friend he hasn’t heard about before like a real life friend, so he’s like who dat and im like oh, new rp friend from > insert country
That being said, he actually did surprise me the other week and I have been holding onto it for fear life. We were complaining about a friend who literally just sleeps and watches Netflix all day when she’s not working, and he’s like “I don’t get how you can do that” and im like “Well I have friends online who claim to do that a lot. Me, personally, I’d get too bored.” and hes like “I just don’t get how people can do nothing all the time? Like at least with you and your online stuff, that’s still doing something. I just feel like that’s actually a hobby.” and I kind of didn’t hear whatever else it is he said because he actually ??? referred to my RP addiction as something valid and worthy??? and all this time i’ve assumed he didn’t get it and thought it was dumb??? IDK, it made me feel good.
✿ Have you considered writing professionally or do you have plans to?
Always. But I never will, I don’t think.
✿ How do you handle the toxicity sometimes found in the roleplaying community, particularly in fandoms? How has roleplaying, specifically, impacted your life?
I use tumblr savior to blacklist a lot, because it really gets too much for me to be exposed to it a lot, and it makes me feel shitty and not want to rp with certain people because of how they behave, or makes me feel guilty for how I behave… I usually drift away from things that give me major negative vibes, otherwise I become in great, exponential danger of saying something i’ll regret. I’ve hated Tumblr RP a lot in this last year. It’s nowhere near as relaxed as it used to be, and I know there’s a lot of political debate on the topic of equality but I am not comfortable in a space where I have to edit everything I do and say or just not do or say it at all. When it gets like that level, a good dose of the unfollow button and keeping my mouth shut is what I find the most helpful.
✿ How has writing improved your life and do you see yourself sticking with it?
When I graduated high school, I went to college for art and animation, and it basically ruined my creative life. Before RP, I used to be an avid drawer, I sketched every day, I improved my skills and motivation so much, everyone knew me as the girl who drew in class instead of did her work, the girl who was going to grow up and be a famous artist, and when I went to college, it killed that for me. My ego took a big blow because the tech side of the course absolutely annihilated me, i couldn’t do it. so after that (and that was 2 years ago now) i haven’t really drawn since. but the silver lining was that I took on RP more dedicatedly after that, and found that I truly adored writing. Try as I might, I’ve never really comitted to a personal writing project, and it’s only in the recent times that I’ve taken the pressure off for me to do it, but. RP makes me happy, it makes me feel like I’m doing something good when I reply to people or make new friendships, it makes me feel like I’m wanted and needed, that my characters and plots are valid and that other people would care if I’m here or not. It was a big boost for my self confidence, and it’s also made me so much more privy to the creative world, which i needed after that. so yeah, i see myself sticking with writing.
✿ Is there a quote from a piece of literature that holds great value to you? What is it and why is it important to you?
She stood in front of her closet mirror in her T-shirt and twisted this way and that. What’s wrong with me? She wondered. There was nothing the matter that she could see. She was tall and leggy, like her mother, with full breasts, small waist, and slim hips that curved enough to show she was female. Her skin was gently golden; it was always golden, sun or not, and her tawny hair was thick and long and wild. So why was it that groups of girls stopped talking when she approached them at school and answered her openings with tense words that killed the conversations she tried to start? Was she too good-looking? Was that possible? Was that the threat they saw?
Legitimately, this was the first and pretty much only female protagonist I had ever read about who fully and whole-heartedly loved herself where it mattered. Sure, she still had her shortcomings and moments of weakness, but god damn, Vivian was so proud of herself and what she stood for, and that was so refreshing to see during that period of young adult fiction. It’s why she became my first favourite character from a book. And has pretty much inspired me to write feirce, aggressive, self-assured female characters ever since. I was just so inspired by her way of thinking as a young girl, it appealed to me so much and so that moment in the book plus a whole lot of others, really stuck with me.
✿ What do you typically look for in a roleplay partner?
Cliche, but chemistry. And not always in the writing kind but a lot in the OOC kind. I like people who I can talk to super easily, who write in the same tumblr language I do, who reference memes and are not afraid to hit me up with IMs and head canons, etc. I just love it because it makes me feel comfortable with a person, and like I’m not being a bother. The better I get to know a player, the better I get to know their character away from IC interactions. Likewise, I adore it when players get to know me so well that they read the patterns in my characters easily, and I don’t feel like I have to explain them all the time? It’s like they just know, and they know what path I want to put them on. I also look for honesty, people who are down to tell me what they’re feeling about a situation or whether something bothers them, or is able to voice if I’m doing something wrong. Most importantly though, I look for decisive people. Not overly decisive but it’s just so important for me to have someone who is like “yes that sounds good, i can start a thing for you if you want” or “i dont think that really fits, how about this plot idea instead?” I really cannot stand sending IMs to people about plots and characters and them just agreeing off the bat the whole time, but never really deciding on anything either, and so it makes me feel like i’m just paddling in a circle until i make all the decisions for us. To me, that’s not what RP is about. It involves teamwork, and effort, and to me, that’s not putting in effort. It gets me really frustrated.
✿ What made you want to join the roleplaying community?
I kept seeing bios in celebrity tags, and so when i sussed out what group rp was on tumblr, i was like holy shit there is a name for the thing i have been doing with friends over email for so many years???? and you can use PICTURES? i gotta get on this.
so somehow, i found a group rp that allowed mythical creatures, i wanted to be a peter pan mermaid, and the rest is history~~
✿ What one piece of literature has been most inspirational/life changing for you? Why?
(( Blood & Chocolate, by Anette Curtis Klause — because of the main character, as per mentioned. She’s inspired me to write full-on, aggressive, assertive, don’t-tell-me-what-i-can-and-cant-do female characters without apology. ))
The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen — it’s hard to explain exactly why, and it doesnt even just involve ONE of her books either, but they’ve kind of shaped my whole general character story directions?? her books always follow a pattern and i really admire that pattern, even if it is repetitive, and i am secretly a hopeless romantic so i really like how her love stories evolve. it’s always slow burning, the boy is usually a direct surprising love interest, and the girl always gains new friends and family out of it, and the stories always involve a nice little reoccurring theme. In the Truth About Forever, it’s a game that she and a boy plays throughout the entire book, which eventually leads to a shift from friendship to something more. THAT PLOT HAS APPEALED TO ME EVERY SINCE. the example of a teeny, tiny, otherwise-completely-average moment greatly impacting the rest of a characters life with someone else… i am weAK for this concept ok. her females are always usally feircely independent too and that gets me ♥
✿ Who are your top three favorite fictional characters and why?
Vivian Gandillon (Blood & Chocolate) — i swear i could go on repeat forever haha, but i’ve basically already mentioned why.
Jace Herondale (Shadowhunter Series) — back when the first like, two books had only been published, i super fell hard for this series and it was straight up because of the commentary done by Jace and his ability to senselessly bicker with everybody in his path. his comments to me, were always absolutely hysterical. i was so in love with his wry and witty comments, especially the way he kept at ease and casual through super distressing situations, and i really wish id kept reading the rest of the series as it was published, but i seriously fell behind. then the movie came out. then the netflix series. now i’ve grown too far out of it and having to see the cast on my dash every second of every day makes me want to burn the books.
Shane Collins (Morganville Vampire Series) — this is an oooold old series that i used to read religiously, and it was more in the style of anita blake and buffy vampires~ rather than twilight and true blood -esque content. it got really weird and complicated though so i gave up on it, but for a time, i adored it. and i loved shane because he was hilariously human, he hated everybody except his housemates (though sometimes that could be questioned) and nobody held a grudge better than him. he had a knack for getting in trouble, usually on his own accord, was feircely protective and spent most of his time just being a genuine nuisance and temper tantrum thrower. i saw a lot of me in him, and idk. i just like people with tempers, i think it makes them super fun to read.
