AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT review — Efficient but not dominant

When it comes to video cards, not much has changed in the last three years for people using 1080p 60Hz monitors. The RX 480 debuted in 2016, and it proved more than enough for just about any game running at that resolution. And since most people run a 1080p60 display, it’s easy to point people to the RX 480 (or the slightly updated RX 500-series). But now AMD and Nvidia are both shaking up this category. And with the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT and the Nvidia GTX 1650 Super, we can begin to leave those older cards in the past.

The Radeon RX 5500 XT is launching this month in $170 4GB and $200 8GB configurations. That puts it head-to-head with Nvidia’s 1650 Super, which you can get starting at $160. And at those prices, these cards are aiming at a mainstream, entry-level market.

But looking specifically at the 5500 XT, it’s an upgrade over recent, comparable cards. That’s thanks in large part to its much more energy-efficient 7nm design process as well as its fast GDDR6 memory. But it’s not necessarily the 1080p gaming king due to its price.

I tested the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5500 XT 4GB.

What you’ll like

Great for 1080p gaming

To reiterate, it’s tough to go wrong in the 1080p60 space right now when choosing a GPU. An RX 480 and its successors are still going to work great. The 1650 and 1650 Super are also more than powerful enough for almost any game. But the RX 5500 XT is still pushing things forward.

And it’s going to deliver what you are paying for. In my testing, the 5500XT was able to surpass an average of 60 frames per second at 1080p and high/ultra settings in many of the most recent games.

Here’s the rig I tested on:

AsRock X570 Taichi

Ryzen R7 3700X

NZXT Kraken X62 CPU cooler

16GB HyperX Predator CL16 memory at 3600MHz

Samsung 970 Evo 500GB SSD

EVGA 1000W PSU

For this testing, I’m not necessarily looking for the raw capability of the RX 5500 XT 4GB. I’m trying to determine its real-world performance.

Here are the results for the average frames per second in the following games:

Grand Theft Auto V (ultra): 105

Resident Evil 2 (maxed out): 71

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 (high on DX12): 71

The Witcher 3 (high): 73

Red Dead Redemption 2 (high): 61

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (high): 65

Most games are going to run at high or ultra with no issues on the RX 5500 XT. You may need to drop some settings to maintain a smoother framerate in the most demanding games, however. Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey both averaged over 60fps, but they also saw some significant drops. So you may end up playing those games on medium — or pair the card with a FreeSync monitor to smooth out noticeably variable frame rates.

Much more energy efficient than previous 1080p AMD cards

The RX 5500 XT is 30% more energy efficient than the RX 480, according to AMD. And that’s exactly what you would expect from the smaller 7nm manufacturing process. But despite using significantly less wattage, the card is about 12% more powerful than an RX480. That is a massive improvement in the performance-per-watt category.

This makes the RX 5500 XT ideal for energy-conscious gamers. If you play a lot of games and don’t want to see that reflected in your power bill, this is a smart option.

Excellent for quiet builds

That energy efficiency has other benefits. For example, the Sapphire card I tested is extremely quiet. The 7nm process is obviously producing less excess heat, and the GPU’s coolers are easily dealing with that.

For me, this makes the 5500XT an ideal video card for a media PC or a gaming PC to put in your living room next to your TV and where you sit. You can pop it into a small chassis, and you’ll never even hear it.

What you won’t like

It’s slightly too expensive

In my comparison testing, the RX 5500 XT loses some of its luster. Yes, it’s more energy efficient and quieter than previous-generation AMD cards. But the Nvidia 1650 and 1650 Super both use even less energy.

And when it comes to performance, the RX 5500 XT is about on par with the less expensive 1650 Super. In some games, the 5500 XT is slower than an RX 580 or standard 1650. That begins to break down the price comparison for AMD.

It’s not that the RX 5500 XT is a bad deal at $170. But it’s far from a slam dunk. If you are in this section of the market and you want to feel like you’re getting the best bang-for-your-buck, it’s possible that may end up being a 1650 Super or even an overclocked RX 580 (as long as you don’t mind giving up some efficiency).

Conclusion

If you’re in the market for a new, budget-friendly PC, the RX 5500 XT is definitely one of the cards you should consider. But it is not the obvious choice. You’ll want to shop around and get the deal that’s best for you. It’s worth noting, however, that AMD’s card comes with Monster Hunter: World and 3 months of Xbox Game Pass at no additional charge.

I think it’s fair for AMD to argue that anyone gaming at 1080p60 doesn’t need much more power than what the RX 580 already deliver. And as a more energy efficient, quieter version of what we already had, the 5500 XT is wonderful. I just wish it was at least $20 less expensive.

the night all the parts came, i decided to skip the writing and go ahead and build it. the machine is all finished now, and i’m even writing this post from it. it actually turned out to be a lot less laborious than i expected it to be. and a lot more messy... so here is a comprehensive list of everything i bought, used, and installed. and why. all prices are as of 02/04/2018 1. the cooler master H500P - $150. i was in love with this case from the moment i saw it on a linus build. 200mm front case fans. i don’t think i could have asked for a better case. not only does it look beautiful, it is littered with features that make it completely customizable. the bottom shrouding comes in two pieces that let you cover both the drive cage and PSU. in my build, i only covered the PSU. there are vertically mounted PCI slots so you can have your graphics card displayed. cable management shrouds. 140mm rear case fan. when it arrived, the first thing i did was strip all the plastic off and paint the frame white along with some other modular pieces. i had hatched a color scheme. cooler master’s drive cage design was truly remarkable. the cage has what are basically drawers that the drives bolt in to. the only problem with the design is that the SATA power cables tend to be really stiff so it’s not as simple as just pulling out a drive... 2. i know linus says to not choose a processor based on fanboy-ism, but i totally did. my previous laptop used to be the king of the campus when everyone else was running around with 2.4Ghz processors and i had the only 3Ghz, factory overclocked. i knew what AMD was capable of, i was familiar with it, and i didn’t want to deal with Intel's child-proof processor clocks. i honestly think i went a little overkill based on what i plan on using the machine for. i don’t plan on streaming games, so i probably could have got away with a ryzen 3. but i had the money, and i also wanted to pair it with a decent graphics card, so i splurged. 3. i didn’t have very many stipulations on a motherboard. the only things i was really looking for were 1. CPU compatibility 2. overclocking capability 3. M.2 drive slot. 4. not a ridiculous color the fractal heatsink on the bottom-right of the board has an LED bar that cycles through colors. i know there is a way to change what it does, but i haven’t bothered to play with it yet. i think i may try to make it temperature-related. and also make them turn off when the machine isn’t powered on. 4. if there’s one thing corsair is known for, it’s reliability. i chose this brand of RAM because it was on the approved compatibility list for the motherboard, and because corsair is no knock-off Chinese brand. as for the speed, from everything i’ve read, speed differences yield marginal performance boosts. this ram stick runs at 2133MHz, and having RAM that runs faster didn’t make sense from a performance-per-dollar perspective. it’s not going to be a bottle neck that stops me from reaching +100 frame rates. i mean, there’s one thing to be said when your framerate differential is between 30 and 60, but between 60 and 120... hell. i wasn’t even going to buy a monitor that could crank more than 60 anyways. maybe i’ll upgrade when i cash out of a major investment again. but for now, i’m satisfied. it doesn’t look super cool without specially painted heatsinks, but it does the job. 5. SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2 2280 250GB SATA III - $110 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147398

i had never used an M.2 drive until now. and to be frank, i wouldn’t recommend it just yet. this tech is still fairly new, so it’s got some unpolished bugs. and besides, once it’s set up, it will be just as fast as a standard SSD. if you’re building your computer to have a microscopic form factor, then i can say this would be a good idea, but when you have the space of a regular tower, just go with a 2.5″ SATA ssd. don’t get me wrong, this was a very good product. my OS runs superbly, and it’s super fast and all, it was just a hassle and a half to get a windows OS to boot from this device. if you have an existing hard drive and clone it to this thing, it won’t boot. if, however, you install a fresh windows from a USB ISO, it should be just fine. that’s preferable to cloning a hard drive anyways. 6. the purpose of this was for basic overflow storage. this is where i would be putting photos and games that i rarely ever play i haven’t had to actually use it yet, but it is connected to the motherboard for when the moment comes. i also have my 500GB from my old laptop, and a 70GB from my brother’s old build. 7. this power supply is what gave me half the inspiration for my color scheme. i didn’t actually buy this myself either. this came out of an old build my brother had made. he bought this PSU when he upgraded his graphics card, and his graphics card didn’t end up being compatible with the old machine. so it sat in the garage for about a year before he said i could just take it. it also helped me decide my price point, since it would probably be overkill in a $500 range build. i like that all the cables are black. and it is semi-modular. the motherboard trunk and CPU headers are permanently attached, but peripherals and PCI power adapters are completely removable. having removable cables takes a huge load off of cable management. i just remembered i had talked about this earlier, but since this is a comprehensive list, i decided to mention it again for those planning on using my build as a guide. 8. this was the most difficult piece to choose, but i think i got the biggest bang-for-buck i could get to match my system. graphics cards are overpriced already due to the great data rush, and of course i wanted performance-per-dollar. these come in 3 and 6 GB models, and as far as i had read, 6GB really only makes a difference if you are running 2 monitors. i only have one. when this arrived, i painted the top casing of this in white to match the chassis paint and compliment the color scheme. i haven’t measured the frame rates yet, but so far, no man’s sky runs buttery smooth. compared to the kinds of graphics i got on my old laptop, this is above and beyond several horizons of benchmarks of course. 9. it says $175. i bought it used from a secondhand seller for $135. i am stupendously pleased with this product. it could be bigger, of course, but the screen ratio outweighs all of my hesitations. it is an entry-level monitor so it only does 60Hz, but i could care less. and as a person who repairs TV’s for a living, i knew full well that my future self would hate my past self if i got a curved monitor. don’t buy a curved screen. it’s not worth it. it’s all hype. there’s no benefits to it. Hey data hogs, guess what? Unlimited data plans are back on Verizon.

Whoo-hoo! This is great news. Where do you sign up to switch, either from an individual plan that you’re probably paying way too much for and getting way too little, or from another carrier?

Relax there tiger. Before you make the leap to Verizon’s “unlimited” (with all of its fine print; more on that below) plan, you should know how it compares to the competition and whether or not you’ll actually save money.

We totally understand what a nightmare it is to look through each U.S. carrier’s confusing website to compare the plans, which is why we did all the homework for you. Here’s the breakdown.

Verizon Unlimited

This is the new guy in town. For $80 a month with auto-pay (regular price is $85) you get unlimited calling and texting, an “unlimited” amount of data up to 22GB before Verizon throttles down speeds, HD video streaming, up to 10GB of hotspot data tethering (and then throttling starts), unlimited calling and texting in Canada and Mexico and 500GB of 4G LTE data in Canada and Mexico.

Here’s the breakdown for up to four lines:

1 line: $80/mo.

2 lines: $70 per line = $140/mo.

3 lines: $54 per line = $162/mo.

4 lines: $45 per line = $180/mo.

Compared to Verizon’s individual plans, which come in “small” (2GB), “medium” (4GB) and “large” (8GB), the new unlimited plan is a steal, especially if you’re already paying for large:

Small (2GB) = $35/mo.

Medium (4GB) = $50/mo.

Large (8GB) $70/mo.

T-Mobile One

T-Mobile, the “uncarrier” offers a slightly cheaper “unlimited” T-Mobile One monthly plan that starts at $70 and gets you unlimited calling, texting and up to 28GB of 4G LTE data before you see reduced speeds. Other bundled goodies include unlimited talk, text and data in 140 countries at about 128kbps (super slow, but better than nothing!), unlimited texting and one hour of free data on Gogo-enabled flights, and unlimited talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada.

Here’s how up to four lines with T-Mobile One stack up to Verizon Unlimited:

1 line: $70/mo.

2 lines: $60 per line = $120/mo.

3 lines: $47 per line = $140/mo.

4 lines: $40 per line = $160/mo.

Like Verizon Unlimited, T-Mobile’s “unlimited” plan has other caveats besides the 28GB of 4G LTE data cap.

For one, T-Mobile One streams video at a lower 480p resolution instead of up to HD resolution on Verizon Unlimited, so if you like crispy videos, this might bug you. Second, it doesn’t include any kind of useful hotspot feature for tethering other devices; I say useful because although it does technically include unlimited hotspotting, it’s at 2G speeds, which is basically useless. To add 4G LTE hotspot, you’ll have to pay another $15 per line for 5GB, which is still less than the 10GB included in with Verizon Unlimited.

But, still, if HD video streaming and 4G LTE hotspot isn’t essential for you, T-Mobile One isn’t a bad way to go.

Sprint Unlimited Freedom

Sprint’s Unlimited Freedom Plan is the least expensive compared to Verizon or T-Mobile’s offerings. But it’s also Sprint, which means its 4G LTE network coverage and speeds aren’t nearly as strong as the others.

But in the interest of providing you a complete and fair comparison, Unlimited Freedom gives you 23GB of data at 4G LTE speed before it’s throttled down to slower speeds, video streaming that’s limited to 480p resolution (same as T-Mobile One), “optimized” gaming speeds at up to 2mbps, and music streamed at up to 500kbps. It’s far less than what you get with Verizon Unlimited or T-Mobile One, but it’s at least a little cheaper for up to three lines.

Here’s the breakdown for up to four lines of Unlimited Freedom:

1 line: $60/mo.

2 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) = $100/mo.

3 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) + $30 (third line) = $130/mo.

4 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) + $30 (third line) + $30 (fourth line) = $160/mo.

AT&T Unlimited Plan

This is probably the worst of the “unlimited” plans primarily because the only way to sign up for it is to get a DirecTV or U-Verse subscription as well. In other words:

Avoid at all costs unless you want to pay a boatload and love AT&T for some reason. You can figure out what you get and all of the ridiculous fine print and fees at your own peril. (Warning: Your eyes might bleed from trying to figure it all out.)

Good deal or not?

With the average North American smartphone user using up to 3.7GB of data per month, according to a June 2016 Ericsson Mobility Report, and that number projected to increase to 22GB by 2021, now might the perfect time to switch to an unlimited plan (before the carriers decide pull the plug again in the future).

For Verizon users, the math doesn’t lie. For an extra $10 per month, you get almost three times as much data per month before getting throttled. T-Mobile One is the only real serious “unlimited” competitor to Verizon Unlimited, and while you save a few bucks you also lose out on some useful features like 4G LTE hotspotting and higher resolution video streaming.

In a nutshell, is the Verizon unlimited data plan a good deal? For most people, hell f*cking yes it is.

Amazon- Free Amazon Prime Membership Trial - sign-up link - Amazon’s fast free shipping at any price requires you to have an Amazon Prime Day membership. The good news is it comes with a 30-day trial free trial so you can do all your shopping then cancel it without a penalty. Given that it unlocks so much and costs nothing, Amazon Prime membership is not only a Winning Buy but an essential one for holiday sales shopping. We originally signed up for this deal last year and have kept it realizing how much money it really does save us.

Best Buy- Save $300 or $350 on Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus when you buy and activate with a monthly installment plan for select plans - product link – It’s been a bit frustrating as Best Buy keeps changing this deal. Both Cyber Monday and Black Friday ads said $300, but the Best Buy website states $350. Even at $300, this is a Winning Buy because rivals are only offering a similar amount in vouchers. Note: right now the deal is limited to Verizon but may well open up to other carriers on Cyber Monday.

Microsoft Store- Xbox One S 500GB Console + Free Game and 1-Month Game Pass for $189 (save $60) - product link - The top confirmed Xbox One S deal for Cyber Monday. While other stores are selling the Xbox One S 500GB Console for $189, Microsoft Store includes a Free Game and 1-Month Game Pass.

Sam’s Club- Samsung 43-inch 4K UHD TV with Xbox One S 500GB Console Bundle for $499 (save $250) - product link - A highly rated Samsung 43-inch 4K TV with an Xbox One S 500GB Console Bundle for $499 is a great deal, there’s nothing not to love here.

Samsung.com - Save up to $400 with an eligible smartphone trade-in when you buy a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 - product link- This was the best Black Friday 2017 trade-in offer, and it remains so for Cyber.

Target - 15% off sitewide beginning early morning November 27th - shop link- The top Cyber Monday 2017 deal of the year because this is site wide and electronics are included. Note you do not need to apply any coupon code to get this offer.

Target - Save an additional 5%with the Target REDcard - sign-up link- Yes, you can combine this offer with the 15% off deal (and apply it to many of the already discounted products) to result in massive savings. It is so straightforward (not a voucher in sight) that this makes it our favorite Cyber Monday store card offer.

Walmart- Google Home Mini + $25 Shopping Offer for $29 (save $20) - product link - This was easily the best Black Friday sale on the Google Home Mini. With the deal coming back for Cyber Monday 2017, it has to be a Winning Buy.

Walmart- Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S7 for $299 (save $200) - product link. With most smartphone deals only offering gift card kickbacks, this is an incredible price on what remains an extremely good smartphone.

Walmart- RCA 55-inch 4K Roku Smart HDR LED TV for $379 (save $420) - product link - The model number is not specifically listed in Walmart’s press release, but I believe the price point for this TV was $429.99 on Black Friday, so the Cyber Monday price is even better.

Cyber Monday TV tip: make sure to always check the specific TV model when retailers release their deals, especially Amazon as they often hide this until the last minute. Remember even the best manufacturers have weak models in their line-up so do your research before buying. Not all 4K TVs are made the same!

Best Buy - Sony Handycam CX405 Flash Memory Camcorder +$20 Gift Card for $179.99 (save $50) - product link - Not the newest product but I really like the combination of brand, price, and free gift card.

Kohl’s - Google Home for $79.99 (save $50) - product link - Other stores had this deal with an included gift card on Black Friday, but there seems to be less offers for Cyber Monday. Either way, this is a nice deal. Unfortunately, no Kohl’s coupons apply to this offer.

Target - Samsung 50MU6300 Smart UHD TV for $479.99 (save $370) - product link– This has been a very well-reviewed TV with a very solid discount.

Sam’s Club- HP Pavilion X360 2-in-1 Touchscreen Convertible Full HD IPS 15.6-inch Notebook for $679 (save $320) - product link - Solid laptop for a decent price. Cheaper options do exist, but I like this model and its flexibility.

Walmart- Sony PlayStation 4 1TB Slim Gaming System for $199 (save $100) - product link- This was the average price on Black Friday but it sold out everywhere. With Walmart promising new stock tomorrow for Cyber Monday, this becomes a solid deal for what is clearly an in-demand offer.

Walmart -Sony PlayStation 4 Pro 1TB Gaming Console in Black for $349 (save $50) - product link - Once again this is a familiar sales price over the holiday season, but Walmart is $1 cheaper than the competition so why not save a dollar.

Walmart - Microsoft Xbox One S for $189 (save $90) - product link- This is Walmart’s Black Friday 2017 pricing, but it is a sought-after item and expect additional stock for Cyber Monday.

Walmart - Samsung 58-inch 4K Smart LED HDTV for $598 (save $200) - product link- This is the same price Walmart had on Black Friday, and I expect the model to once again be the UN58MU6070. Solid deal.

Walmart - Bose QuietComfort Noise-cancelling Headphones for $179 (save $100) - product link- Very popular and well-reviewed headphones which retain its Black Friday price and make for a solid Cyber Monday deal. Amazon has it for the exact same price – product link

Treat With Caution

While both Black Friday and Cyber Monday are famous for their big sales, they are also equally famous for dodgy deals, misleading savings and firesales on bad products you should avoid. So unless you have a very good reason to want one of the products listed below, you should stay away from them.

Cheap Amazon HDTVs - As we compared in our Amazon Vs Walmart Cyber Monday article, Amazon notoriously loves to announce those cheap HDTV deals without specifying brand and/or model. While these deals may be good, it would be wise to treat them with caution and do your research once they are revealed. It can be frustrating for shoppers as those deals often sell out even before the actualy Cyber Monday time period begins. Amazon’s press release lists: “40-inch 1080p smart TV” for $179.99 (our best guess), “TCL 43-inch 1080p smart TV” for $239.99 (our best guess), “TCL 49-inch 1080p smart TV” for $279.99 (our best guess).

Amazon- Amazon Cloud Cam for $99.99 (save $20) - product link - As we warned before, this is a good price but reviews are bad so I’d strongly suggest you wait for the next generation model.

Kohl’s - Extra 20% off with coupon code: BUYNOW20 - shop link- An extra 20% off sounds like a great deal, but it is not valid for premium electronics. It is still worth pursuing, but I recommend being mindful if it is accepted for your particular purchase and factor this potential disappointment into the price.

Kohl’s -$10 off $50 with code MONDAY - shop link - Similar to what I said above, a saving of $10 off an order of $50 sounds like a great deal, but it says it is not valid for premium electronics. This could result in a nasty surprise when you checkout.

Walmart - RCA Cambrio 10.1-inch 2-in-1 32GB Tablet with Windows 10 (includes keyboard) for $99.98 (save $8) - product link- A very low price but only a saving of $8 and reviews are bad, there are better deals here and even if you just want the Windows 10 licence, these days a Windows 10 license is restricted to the product it is installed on.

2017 Black Friday was easily the biggest Black Friday in recorded history, and Cyber Monday 2017 is already looking like it will break all previous Cyber Monday totals as well. As this holiday season continues on, you’ll find more stores just merging Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales together. The bad news is deals often repeat, but the good news is Cyber Monday offers are rarely worse than their Black Friday equivalents (and often include a new discount/gift card), and their stock is replenished if you missed out the first time. Plus, many longtime shoppers know, sometimes even better deals crop up the closer we get to Christmas. That’s part of the deals game we have to play and knowing when the right time to jump is what keeps us on our toes.

Cyber Monday Winners and Losers

There has been quite a noticeable shift from Black Friday to Cyber Monday with deals. While Kohl’s incredible Kohl’s Cash deals saw it win out against bigger rivals, it’s a much different story for Cyber Monday. Amazon clearly is the big winner with Walmart a close second. Target meanwhile has the best site-wide discounts, especially in combination with its REDcard. Best Buy- Sharp 50-inch LED 2160p Smart 4K Ultra HD Roku TV for $179.99 (save $320) - product link - This is not only the best TV deal so far, but in my opinion, it is also the top deal overall for Black Friday 2017. On Black Friday last year, Best Buy offered a 49-inch Toshiba 4k HD TV for only $199.99. This year's deal is an inch larger and $20 less expensive. This deal will not be available online.

Best Buy- Save $350 on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus with qualified activation - product link - Target is offering the same deal but with a $300 gift card. Best Buy's direct savings of $350 is a better deal and offers more flexibility for those who may not want the limitations a gift card brings. It appears that Best Buy recently increased this offer too from $300 (as seen in the ad) to $350, it’s the best Samsung Galaxy smartphone Black Friday deal out there.

Best Buy - Toshiba 55-inch Class LED 2160p w/ Chromecast 4K Ultra HD TV for $279.99 (save $220) - product link- This in-store only Toshiba 55-inch 4K TV deal combines a great discount with a quality set. It also has very good reviews.

Kohl's- Haier 55-inch 4K Ultra HDTV + $90 Kohl's Cash for $299.99 (save $100) - product link - A 55-inch 4K Ultra HDTV for under $300 is fantastic, and the $90 Kohl’s Cash means a net price of only $210! This is my second favorite 55-inch HDTV deal of the year only behind Best Buy’s Toshiba 55-inch Class LED 2160p w/Chromecast 4K Ultra HD TV for $279.99 listed above.

Kohl's- Microsoft Xbox One S 500GB Console + $45 Kohl's Cash for $189.99 (save $90) - product link - Best Buy and Walmart are both selling the Xbox One S 500GB Console for $189 with no incentive. Target has the same $189 price with a $25 gift card but Kohl’s offer of $45 Kohl’s Cash again makes it the clear top dog. It’s the best Black Friday Xbox One S deal.

Kohl's- Sony PlayStation 4 1TB Console + $60 Kohl's Cash for $199.99 (save $100) - product link - The $199 price mark for the PS4 1TB Console is the same price offered at rivals Target, Best Buy and Walmart, but the $60 Kohl’s Cash really sets this deal apart and makes it a no brainer. Again this ranks as the best Black Friday 2017 PS4 deal.

Kohl's- LG 49-inch 4K UHD HDR Smart LED TV (LGK-49UJ6300) + $120 Kohl's Cash for $399.99 (save $300) - product link - LG is a quality brand this is a good price, but it is the $120 in Kohl’s Cash which makes it a Winning Buy. While other 49/50-inch 4K TVs are cheaper, this is arguably the best in terms of quality.

Walmart - Google Home Mini + $25 Shopping Offer for $29 (save $20) - product link- Many other stores are offering the Google Home Mini for the same $29, but the benefit of buying at Walmart is it includes a $25 Shopping offer towards a future order when bought through Google Express. With this included the net purchase price is a crazy $4.

Walmart- Google Home + $25 Shopping Offer for $79 (save $50) - product link - Many other stores are again matching Walmart’s price, but another $25 voucher offer for purchasing through Google Express makes the net purchase price an unmatched $54.

Walmart- Sharp 55-inch Class 4K (2160P) Smart LED TV (LC-55P6000U) for $298 - product link - Other stores are offering cheaper 55-inch 4K TVs on Black Friday this year, but what makes this stand out is the brand and quality. Found on the first page of Walmart's ad, it is Walmart’s featured Black Friday 2017 deal.

Kohl’s- Apple Watch Series 3 + $90 Kohl's Cash for $329 (no direct discount) - product link - No direct discount here so I cannot rate this a star buy. But, the $90 Kohl’s Cash makes it a very solid deal.

Target- Westinghouse 55-inch 4K Smart UHD TV - $249.99 (in-store only) - product link - This is the lowest price for a 55-inch 4K TV this year and one of the cheapest that I have seen. Unfortunately for online shoppers, this deal is in-store only and it isn’t a premium brand. But you are still getting a lot of HDTV for your money.

Target- Polaroid 32-inch LED TV for $89.99 (save $40) - product link - This will not be the cheapest 32-inch TV this year (Amazon has one for $69.99 but is withholding the brand), still $89.99 is still a very low price for a set of this size.

Walmart- Element 39-inch Class HD (720P) Smart LED TV for $125 - product link - Walmart has the cheapest Black Friday deal of the year for a 39-inch TV. This is not a premium HDTV, but the price is solid.

Walmart- Apple iPad 32GB Wi-Fi (5th Generation) for $249 (save $80) - product link - Good discounts on Apple products are rare, but this is a good deal for a popular iPad model. It isn’t exclusive, Target offers the deal at $249.99, but you’re still pocketing an extra dollar if you buy it at Walmart.

Walmart- PlayStation 4 GranTurismo Sport VR Bundle for $299 (save $100) - product link- Released earlier this month, the PlayStation 4 GranTurismo Sport VR Bundle is already on sale for $299 at Walmart. While many other stores have this same deal, Walmart's price follows a familiar theme being $0.99 less than competing stores.

Buyer Beware Deals!

Black Friday is perhaps as famous for its dodgy deals as its acclaimed discounts, and it can be easy get duped by misleading savings or a fire sale on a bad product. You would have to desperately want one of these specific deals to buy it:

Amazon- Amazon Cloud Cam for $99.99 (save $20) - product link - Decent price but reviews are very poor. Wait for the next generation model. Instead, I'd suggest you check out this dedicated Black Friday camera guide in our Black Friday Cyber Monday section for better options.

Amazon- 32-inch 720p TV (Sceptre) for $69.99 - product link - While this is a great price for a 32-inch TV, the model number is not listed, which makes it impossible to rate. It is very likely to be from a no-name brand and the quality will be subpar. Amazon is also not saying when it will go on sale, which means this TV is going to be tough to get with the limited quantities which risks buyers rushing to secure an unknown model.

Amazon- 49-inch 4K TV (Sceptre) for $159.99 - product link - As above, nothing is known about this TV. While $159.99 is a steal for a 49-inch 4K TV, this carries all the same risks and Amazon has not announced when it will go on sale or in what quantities.

Walmart- Sony PlayStation 4 1TB for $199 (save $100) - product link - This is a similar discount to most stores this Black Friday, so why should you should steer clear? Because BJ's Wholesale Club and Costco list it for $189 (membership required) while the standout deal is Kohl's which is offering the same deal but with $60 in Kohl's Cash for free. That’s the deal to buy. Since this is a gaming console, my best bet would still be on Amazon as they are going to have it at $199 and with the Prime Membership, you can have it sent really fast plus you might get a free game with it!

Target- Free $250 Gift Card With Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus With Activation - product link - Not a bad deal in isolation, but Walmart is offering a $300 gift card with the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus on activation. There is no reason to sacrifice the additional $50 in gift card credit.

Black Friday 2017 is going to be the biggest Black Friday in history. Some stores have even had deals running since the start of November. But all the very best deals are still available now and many only launch on Black Friday itself. Amazon, Best Buy, Kohl’s and Walmart are leading the pack this year. Hey data hogs, guess what? Unlimited data plans are back on Verizon.

Whoo-hoo! This is great news. Where do you sign up to switch, either from an individual plan that you’re probably paying way too much for and getting way too little, or from another carrier?

We totally understand what a nightmare it is to look through each U.S. carrier’s confusing website to compare the plans, which is why we did all the homework for you. Here’s the breakdown.

Verizon Unlimited

Here’s the breakdown for up to four lines:

1 line: $80/mo.

2 lines: $70 per line = $140/mo.

3 lines: $54 per line = $162/mo.

4 lines: $45 per line = $180/mo.

Small (2GB) = $35/mo.

Medium (4GB) = $50/mo.

Large (8GB) $70/mo.

T-Mobile One

Here’s how up to four lines with T-Mobile One stack up to Verizon Unlimited:

1 line: $70/mo.

2 lines: $60 per line = $120/mo.

3 lines: $47 per line = $140/mo.

4 lines: $40 per line = $160/mo.

Like Verizon Unlimited, T-Mobile’s “unlimited” plan has other caveats besides the 28GB of 4G LTE data cap.

But, still, if HD video streaming and 4G LTE hotspot isn’t essential for you, T-Mobile One isn’t a bad way to go.

Sprint Unlimited Freedom

Here’s the breakdown for up to four lines of Unlimited Freedom:

1 line: $60/mo.

2 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) = $100/mo.

3 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) + $30 (third line) = $130/mo.

4 lines: $60 + $40 (second line) + $30 (third line) + $30 (fourth line) = $160/mo.

AT&T Unlimited Plan

This is probably the worst of the “unlimited” plans primarily because the only way to sign up for it is to get a DirecTV or U-Verse subscription as well. In other words:
