i always like talkin about mid 2000s design and clothing trends, as i have written a lot about frutiger metro as a key aesthetic for me as i grew up, and its lack of recognition as a 2000s design period outside of y2k futurism. my own fashion right now leans more on scene/emo but its not what i was able to wear, as a kid my mom would Not let me look like that. and now that im older i have been looking back more at fashion in attempts to dress in a nostalgic way- whether its clothes i did or didnt wear
i especially started thinking about fashion outside of 2000s scene, emo, goth, and rave when i just finished watching breaking bad and i think its predictable im talking about jesse here when i think about 2000s fashion lol. but i saw it all the time-- i saw the kinds of clothes girls were wearing and what the boys were wearing, that werent sub cultures like punk or scene. and thats the main thing i wanted to think about too, i wanted to think about what was the casual/norm overall. the most common trend, the clothes you saw most often in clothing stores
and when i started to think about it, one thing that hit me was Brands. not shirts for shows or bands, but brands of Things. i most recall clothing brands putting their own name on things, or brands associated with them doing so-- this *really* applied to clothing brands that associated with something else.... most frequently skateboarding or other sports.. i most recall when i think of clothes with names on them are Vans, Old Navy, Active, Affliction, Justice and Val Surf.
i actually find the masc line of Brand clothing to be most interesting because it cements pop culture and trends so clearly. skateboarding. sports. thats where so many brand names popped up and its what made people start to pay attention to the brands and not simply the clothing store (id its a sport brand and not like. old navy). its not like this has gone away- it still exists but i think feels different due to the changes of trends, and also the way people get clothes now too online. but i think it was a big boom at the time to see it because it wasnt really something people thought about.
the actual appearance of the clothes though is fun to see because it was part of whatever masc aesthetic seemed to exist right then. idk what aesthetic labels that ridiculous wikia would call it, but its a good ol mix of everything that is cool to boys/defined boy aesthetic. cars, sports, skulls, grungy imagery and textures etc. some of the design shapes remind me of 'tribal' design from around that time, or even crazy metal band logos lol (and hey, that was popular too. i imagine thats why that design look was popular in general).
the Cool fashion of the 2000s that i witnessed i and my brother (we're twins) were not allowed to indulge in. or we partially did what my mom considered okay. a lot of the stuff that looked cool was associated with teens, and for boys i saw that it was often associated even more with ~rowdy teens~. skateboarders had a representation in media or being rebellious and authority hating (sometimes druggies). and in general there was media that kind of encouraged this behavior (rebellious teen and all. i feel this started mid 90s). it is interesting looking back and seeing how those impressions (media + fashion) affected certain people's views on people who looked like that. it happens today still of course, but growing up it seemed very very aggressive to judge. popular trends spread really fast, faster than ever due to tv and the internet. the need to control media consumption got real big too because of that. loads of parents would see anything on tv or the web and not welcome the trend no matter what.
didnt mean to get off topic there. but i think even some of the most casual and common clothing trends of the youth in the early 2000s still have an interesting history that some may not really know unless they grew up and saw it develop. i may not have been allowed to wear certain clothes but i know how this went down because of that. i had the parent who thought baggy pants looked stupid, thought spaghetti strap tanks and short shorts were slutty, thought torn jeans made no sense, thought dyed hair was ugly, etc etc. but a lot of these things were basically the most common fashion to have too. and of course, now that i am independent and an adult i look back at all these kinds of clothes i didnt get to wear, and now i can. and i can do so with the ability to reflect on their conception too.

For the ask thing, the Esper Sisters.
Tatsumaki:
favorite thing about them: Her lack of fear. At first glance Tats would just be labeled an arrogant bitch or something, and there is some validity to that, but she also has a lot of inner strength that we donā€™t expect. And we see her start to develop especially during the Garou fight, where she shows that she can face a terrible threat without hesitating, even when she probably wont win. I do think there is a lot of actual fear inside of her, since without her esper powers sheā€™s a very tiny woman with arms like twigs. But I still admire her willingness to face down a threat and keep going because she has to win or die.
least favorite thing about them: The fact that sheā€™s probably never going to be enjoyed by the fandom in a respectful way without all the dorkass losers accusing each other of being pedophiles. Maybe Murata and ONE are obviously the weirdos we pretend they arenā€™t, but Tatsumaki shouldnā€™t suffer for it.
favorite line:Ā ā€œThen allow me to teach you what exactly happens when you lay a hand on either of us!ā€ Because Fubuki is her everything. Nothing else matters but protecting her baby sister, even if she can be a pain in the ass.
brOTP: Flash. Okay yeah I started this blog shipping these two, but now I see them having some similarities. Like being in captivity and experimented on. Besides their current dynamic is Flash says a bitchy thing to Tats and so far she hasnā€™t had the balls to come back at him (seriously, since he came for her throat after she took his kill, sheā€™s been avoiding his insults ever since). Not completely sure if Flash would try to cause her malicious harm in some way, but if not they could find their similarities and stop being dicks all the time.
OTP: Saitama/Tatsumaki. One day I gave this couple about thirteen seconds of thought and overnight I got hooked. Iā€™m sorry to subject you all to this sentence, but theyā€™re like the earth and sky. He is the most powerful with his body, and she with her mind. I think when Saitama was confronting Tats at the beginning of the ninja arc, he was more interested in her feelings and what was going on with her, like if she would be okay bleeding and bringing up her need for friends. And I think sheā€™s also got some depression and loneliness going on, maybe from low self-esteem/image issues, also like Saitama. Plus she always seems to impressed with Kingā€™s hero record but those are all Saitamaā€™s achievements. This is one of the few OTPs that Iā€™ll actually be genuinely bitter about if I donā€™t get....
nOTP: Tatsumaki/King. I use to take a small interest in this ship because it seemed to be going in that direction when Tats got all got for King when he came in covered in blood before they all went out. Plus apparently she only respects him and Blast (I may of gotten that from a wikia though so it might not be true idk). And heā€™s seen her panties in the webcomic. But he is vastly not good enough for Tats since heā€™s not only not a hero, but heā€™s also a big liar. Not saying Iā€™m anti-King, and I get heā€™s kind of stuck right now in an impossible situation, but I donā€™t imagine Tatsumaki being forgiving for what sheā€™d see as a huge scam.Ā
random headcanon: Tatsumaki wasnā€™t successful in dating while in school, mostly due to her cold and arrogant personality, but she did try again as an adult with match services and online dating. Did notĀ help her self-image in the slightest and she only seemed to attract weird guys, so after awhile she just gave up.
unpopular opinion: Tatsumaki being growth stunted and childlike is more interesting than just having her be a tall, voluptuous Fubuki lookalike who is about to hit 30. Sheā€™s unique, and Fubuki is also unique.
song i associate with them: Paula Cole -Ā ā€œWhere Have All The Cowboys Goneā€ a song about a woman being lonely or neglected, and just wanting a normal, happily ever after.
favorite picture of them: (damn u for making me choose)
Tumblr media
She looks so damn conniving.Ā
Fubuki:
favorite thing about them: The masks she wears, just because they make her so fascinating. I like how she is similar, yet completely different from Tatsumaki, and tries to be strong and face any threat like her yet will usually always fall short. But she doesnā€™t give up, even if itā€™s obvious to everyone else she wonā€™t succeed, she doesnā€™t let the haters get to her.
least favorite thing about them: Sheā€™s so annoying. Like I shouldnā€™t say that about rare tough girls (who are also written well) in shounens, but she is. Like sheā€™s so demanding that everyone pay attention to her and do what she says (kind of like Tatsumaki so maybe thats where she learned it), even barging into Saitamaā€™s house and giving him attitude. Another anon once sent me an ask on if the fandom would feel differently about her if she were male, and the answer is yes. You donā€™t start throwing building around because someone questions you, I donā€™t care how long youā€™ve spent your life trying to achieve a fraction of what your older sister was basically given by nature only to keep being reminded you never will.Ā
favorite line:Ā ā€œSo you dare to stand in my way.ā€ Sounds badass but I donā€™t feel that way. It kind of seems like sheā€™s trying to be cool but in reality itā€™s all fake intimidation tactics.
brOTP: Suiyru. I donā€™t know why actually, heā€™s kind of a fuckboy, but similar to the friendship I see Flash and Saitama possibly having, he could teach her to loosen up more. Of course heā€™d be friendzoned really quick, but maybe heā€™d grow enough to look past that?
OTP: Garou/Fubuki. Went over this in the Garou ask, but the most important thing is that they are both super hot and fine deserves fine.
nOTP: Saitama/Fubuki. Because he, like me, finds her really intrusive and annoying. Thatā€™s not a good first impression. I get people can find chemistry later on, so the idea could grow on me if the story heads in that direction, but I guess Fubuki just doesnā€™t seem good enough for him. He doesnā€™t like to even listen to her talk. And lastly her interactions with him specifically make me dislike her in sexist ways, since she seems like just a nagging bitch. Iā€™m not fond of that perspective on her.
random headcanon: Outside of hero work, Fubuki is a painter.
unpopular opinion: She's a hoe. But a secret hoe. I think Fubuki has a power kink, and craves direct attention and adoration (like a fan or a thirsty someone in the group), but mostly she might just like having a never ending supply of something her sister is barren in. Which is really mean but thatā€™s why itā€™s unpopular.
song i associate with them: Pistol Annies -Ā ā€œHell On Heelsā€ getting whatever you want with the power of sexuality and manipulation. Thatā€™s probably not what sheā€™s about but itā€™s closer to my hcs.
