imagine the dr surviving cast watching a mystery movie. they would be the WORST
trigger happy havoc
there's kirigiri who figures it out from the set-up (please. its chock full of cliches.) you don't know when byakuya figures it out, but he's just smirking at random close-ups and snorting snidely. (while he has a good idea, he's definitely just waving his dick around to keep up appearances too). makoto is the absolute worst. he's muttering the entire thing through, practically spoiling the entire movie as they go along.
there's asahina she makes for good audience, she's just vibing and gasping dramatically, giving the right reactions at the right moments. she's also practically strangling makoto lmao. there's hagakure, who makes bizarre and random guesses (conspiracy theorist) that happen to be right like.. twice (actual functioning clairvoyant, surprisingly). he also tries to fall asleep, but makoto is so damn loud. makoto and hagakure are a two-man class trial, them disproving and arguing both of their theories. touko's just there because it's teeeeechnically a date with her beloved white knight, but you bet your ass that she can enjoy good storytelling and plot devices. she's basically cinema sins as she mutters "huh. narration. cheap tactic." kirigiri is silently nodding along, and eventually, they're both discussing the cliches and the utter bullshit in it, lmao. touko doesn't quite figure out the mystery, but she's pointing out plot holes as they go.
makoto eavesdrops and uses it as truth bullets in the makeshift class trial. eventually byakuya joins in, by the halfway point, they're all drowning out the movie completely. asahina's just bummed out and wondering how did they think this was a good idea. kirigiri hasn't officially joined, but she's basically dropping hints to makoto as they go along. touko does the same thing to byakuya. hagakure cries out that it's unfair, he doesn't have a sidekick. kirigiri tries to pry out touko's knowledge of cliches, touko cries out that kirigiri's a traitor for betraying her trust by using their earlier discussion, etc etc.
by the end, asahina's just happy that the characters got what they deserve. kirigiri's right, of course, but hagakure predicts an unforeseen plot twist that's just bad writing in the movie, touko is practically ranting how the fuck did that happen, there were so many plot holes for the twist to happen, but he's right nonetheless. makoto gets it wrong, actual investigation skills doesnt work in a movie, he keeps attempting the movie to apply real life logic. and as for byakuya? he's just smirking and laughing all the way through. is he correct? is he just waving his dick around? that's the real mystery.
goodbye despair
(technically they're all surviving, but i'm just counting the awakened ones at the end of the game, because... that's a lot of people lmao.)
(+ nagito and chiaki because we need actual detectives in here, and they're barely detectives as it is.)
let's start this off withā chiaki is asleep. she's down for the count. hajime keeps trying to wake her up but she's out. that leaves nagito and hajime. hajime is just eyeing/glaring at nagito, nagito knows, he's just ššššæ as for the actual mystery, hajime actually knows how to keep his mouth shut... for the most part. he's muttering out half-formed syllables at random times, or shaking his head. sometimes, nagito asks him to elaborate, and hajime reluctantly does. when nagito isn't doing that, he's watching the movie, going "huh? but..." which makes hajime go crazy. elaborate. what do you mean. but WHAT. sometimes nagito laughs at random times and hajime's practically boring his eyes into nagito's skull, wondering what the fuck he's thinking. chiaki wakes up at random times, points out random things, hajime's shaking her, what does she mean he didn't quite catch it, but she's already gone. hajime obsesses over the slurred syllable that he heard.
and then there's kazuichi, who... isn't quite following? that's the detective dude, right? what do you mean that it's a common trope in movies? that doesn't make sense, he's working for the police, why is he trying to get arrestedā and there's akane, who's just cackling at the dead bodies and hollering at the crime scenes as she wolfs down her popcorn. why aren't you freaked out, fuyuhiko asks. you aren't acting like this in the game, fuyuhiko says. of course akane knows how to differentiate fiction from reality. fuyuhiko understands the sentiment, both of them go apeshit at the crime scenes, fuyuhiko wants the detective to lose because he doesn't like the police much, mafia and all. meanwhile, there's sonia, who already watched 70 other movies with practically the exact same plotline, but she's basically freaking out at every turn. she's ooohing and aaaahing at every plot twist and kazuichi is like. oh PLEASE, he already saw that coming. he stretches his arms very unsubtly, sonia primly stands up and moves ten seats away. you're right, miss sonia, this is a better spot. kazuichi says, appearing out of nowhere. sonia moves away. this is a vicious cycle.
she finds her way eventually to hajime, who's five seconds away from an aneurysm. he's trying to pick the brains of two people while trying to figure out the plot of the movie. nagito looks very strangely pleased. sonia is unfazed, randomly saying that "oh, you know x is actually stole x, right? but that's only one facet of the grand plan, which is currently in motion." hajime's about to cry. thank fuck. an actual conversational partner. they calmly swap theories, kazuichi desperately trying to join in the conversation but he really isn't keeping up. fuyuhiko barges in, basically going what the fuck are you all on, are you saying that this movie is gonna have a happy ending? hell no, it doesn't work like that, fuyuhiko should know. this is what would actually happenā
it's an actual class trial now, akane dropping in and all. she asks for clarifications every once in a while, but she doesn't really care. kazuichi is practically kissing her feet. nagito has gone ššššæš§š¼āāļøšš at this point. fuyuhiko is very much concerned. hajime doesn't see jack shit. what does hajime see, you ask? hajime sees that nagito isn't opening his mouth to share his thoughts. hajime asks him properly. nagito answers with his own question. hajime is about to pop a vein. why does he even bother. sonia calmly says that y is dying. chiaki wakes up. red bracelet. passes out again. hajime shakes her shoulders to no avail. hajime hinata is about to cry. kazuichi, out of all people, tries to calm him down. this makes him feel worse.
sonia is practically a clairvoyant as she predicts what's going to happen 5 seconds before it does. nagito goes ššššæš§š¼āāļøšš šššæš§š¼āāļøšš does nobody else see this, fuyuhiko says. i do, kazuichi says. they are both unable to do anything. for the very first time in a long while, hajime is blindsided in this mystery, and sonia was about to figure it out before he did. his mind is working on 5x speed now. he knows he shouldnt be competitive. its just a movie. he cant help himself. he find a red bracelet on the assistant detective. sonia doesn't say anything about it. hajime is now unlocking 50% of his brain (not literally. no kamukura in this post lmao, im not gonna put my hands in THAT).
final fight scene as the assistant tries to escape. fuyuhiko is on the top of his lungs, pointing out the many different ways he could knock out the detective. akane's joining with him. kazuichi's just joining in the fun at this point. the mystery gets solved. hajime fucking called it. sonia is genuinely caught off-guard, she was too used to movie tropes, but it's a pleasant surprise. fuyuhiko's just pissed that the detective won. "i didn't see that coming :)!" nagito says. what the fuck are you talking about, hajime says, and all traces of victory are gone. nagito says that he isn't a fan of the mystery genre. hajime's eye is twitching. he knows, deep down, nagito is truthful, but also, why does it feel like bullshit. i called it too miss sonia, kazuichi says. everyone knows that he's lying. sonia suddenly lost the ability to hear. chiaki wakes up. summarizes the case. how the fuck do you know that, you were out cold, hajime says. i was spoiled by a redditor, chiaki says as she blinks the sleep out of her eyes. hajime doesn't feel victorious at all. kazuichi, once again, sympathizes. right before hajime can storm off altogether, fuyuhiko joins in the pity pile, and hajime actually finds the hope to live again. what a hopeful sight, nagito says. no hope here, hajime realizes, just despair. akane is sitting beside 5 empty tubs of popcorn. hajime is half-tempted to shove his head in one.
(sidenote: nagito can probably solve the mystery if he tried but he really doesnt care that much + it was fun to rile hajime up lmao)
#cant believe im about to shove another nagito essay in the hashtags#dont worry im gonna put in byakuya too#antag essay really#i havent watched the danganronpa anime yet so i might be wrong#but in dr 1 there are more detectives than dr 2#obvi theres kirigiri but im also talking about the antags#there's byakuya whos nearly as perceptive as kirigiri#and then theres nagito... who happens to be lucky enough to stumble on key facets of the case#dont get me wrong nagito is as smart as byakuya#but byakuya is clever and perceptive while nagito is cunning and resourceful#nagito and byakuyas key difference is#byakuya messed with the after of a crime scene#while nagito conducted his own crime scene even twice#sure nagito knows things from the case that hajime doesnt... but note that hajime tends to overestimate nagito and we're stuck in his head#also note that nagito saw different facets of the case than hajime#like making the crime scene in the first place then seeing mikans true nature in the hospital/seeing the movie then the final dead room#nagito had unfair advantages every time#meanwhile byakuya had the same amount of evidence as makoto excluding case two#byakuya can make use of what he sees while nagito finds ways to find more evidence#that's why i think byakuya would act exactly the same when watching a movie#because its basically just evaluating the evidence presented to you much like class trials#while nagito couldnt find a way to find more evidence or look for a workaround#is he still hella smart? not detective smart like kirigiri or byakuya#danganronpa trigger happy havoc#trigger happy havoc#super danganronpa goodbye despair#trigger happy havoc fic#goodbye despair fic#danganronpa fic#excluding his tendency to play mind games hes about the same level or barely above hajime as a detective

Byakuya and Toko with a male! Ultimate Movie Star S/O who's like hiyoko?
Sure! When you say 'like Hiyoko', do you mean in terms of being short, or just being bratty? Eh whatever I'll just do both. Enjoy!
Byakuya and Toko x Bratty Male!Ultimate Movie Star S/O
Byakuya Togami
Despite being a brat himself, Byakuya literally cannot stand you
He mocks you for being short
He insults your acting and your movies even though he secretly kinda likes it
And he hates you for calling him out on his bullshit
To him, you're just an asshole
But he has to admit, he does enjoy your movies
He loves seeing you portray a completely different persona than your usual bratty, downright childish one
Then he wonders what your true colors really are
Begins spying on you and watching you as you go about your day
Now I'm imagining if he were like Makoto in Persona 5 and he just followed you around with a book or newspaperš¤£
Then feelings started to surface
Tries his best to deny it
You're a guy, he's not supposed to be having these feelings toward you
His father definitely wouldn't like it
But he just can't stop thinking about you
And he figures out that if he stops acting like an asshole, you stop acting an asshole
So as long as both of you tone down the brattiness, you could make it work!
With that, he asks you out
Takes him a while, but he does
You're surprised, but agree
You guys are still kinda bratty sometimes
You're literally like an old married couple
Byakuya loves you, but sometimes, he really wishes you'd shut up
Dont worry Byakuya, the feeling's mutualš
He still gives you shit for being short
But this time, it's out of love
And you give him shit for his long ass legs
And whenever you call him out for being a jerk, he gets agitated and it causes arguments
But you always work it out in the end
Gives you tips and ideas on your acting
Sometimes you guys team up and go off on other people
Asshole Power Couple for the win!
Toko Fukawa
(I'm sorry if this part sucks, but I have literally zero idea on how this relationship would start-)
Tsundere vibes-
Like Byakuya, she hates your guts
Even though she isn't exactly the most pleasant person to be around either
She enjoys your movies, but that's pretty much it
Also mocks you for being short
You fire back with the fact that she smells
She gets offended and storms off
Same routine the next day
As for Genocider, she actually finds you quite entertaining
She would even consider killing you~
Wait-
Killing you?
But she only kills guys she finds cute right??
Oh no, does this mean Toko's developing feelings???
They do share emotions after all (I think at least)
Toko is not happy about this
She thought she hated you! Why the hell is she getting all blushy around you??
You was wrong Toko-
You can see the signs, but she denies it
Eventually, you just ask her out
Takes a while, but she eventually agrees
Like with Byakuya, you guys are an old married couple sometimes
You guys tend to argue quite a bit, because you're both stubborn and a lil bit bitchy
But you always get them resolved in the end
Genocider is a lot easier to get along with honestly
She's not super bratty, so you tend to let loose around her
Both of them enjoy your movies, or whatever movies you're in
And you enjoy her books as well
Even if you guys are difficult, there is still love in your relationship
Toko wouldn't ask for a better partner than you
But you guys really should tone down the brattiness

Shikamaru openly admitting he doesn't have a plan and is asking them to do their best anyway...wow, didn't know I needed that.
I am genuinely confused about how they're handling the whole active duty thing. Remember in the Byakuga gang arc when Temari was shown to have at least some shinobi duties? Under what context is she allowed to fight in Leaf affairs (why then, and not now)? Are foreign shinobi allowed to be active duty shinobi for villages they marry into?
I love that Ino and Tenten were shown, but what about Temari, Karui, and Hinata? Were they evacuated or called in to fight too? Are Team Moegi still outside the gates??
P.S. started keeping up with manga only recently, so I'm not sure if any of this comes up or not.
yeah!!! i make fun of this shitty thirty-two-or-whatever year old a lot but SOMETIMES they have to write him in a way that shoots an arrow directly at my heart and, okay, i will get emotional!!!
these are all good questions that i wish we had answers to but we unfortunately don't, and i don't think i'm super good with coming up with headcanons for worldbuilding info like that myself
with temari specifically. aaaaaaaa. if you were around for the Great Housewife Discourse Of Late 2014/2015, i want to say that at least i can confidently say that she's been characterized to not being a housewife (the byakuya gang arc as you said, still training with all of the kids, it happens off screen but still going to some political banquet in episode 97, i haven't watched it yet but the one tails arc, fighting when the chunin exam arena starts to crumble, etc.)
but with all of that, i'm still not sure exactly where that would put her in relationship with konoha shinobi? same for karui. would they be in the same boat or is temari somehow in a different position...? is it different for konoha in specific because both the world and narrative revolve around it?
as for hinata i just. i have absolutely no clue what they could do with her, since i feel like they've pigeonholed her into this "mom/pushover wife" role so much i don't think they even really can do anything else with her...? the way she was hospitalized in the movie for a fight that happened completely off screen........ yeah that's. uhhhh. (in this case specifically i guess it's fine if she doesn't fight because she does have a young daughter to evacuate but, in general.....)
maybe the anime is shooting itself in the foot for bringing in all of these characters as it is. i'm glad they're here, but maybe it's bringing up more questions than answers...
i would love to know what is going on with team moegi but! that thirty second scene we had of them checking in on him was anime-only šabsolutely none of this was in the manga (shikadai himself completely acts like none of this happened when all's said and done!!!), and the anime is so wildly unpredictable that i can't imagine what it's going to do.
i would like to believe that temari is with them and is holding her boy if they're going to be evacuating (plus she would have been informed that the collar is fake... right...?) or at least i would like to dream.

Thoughts TM on the Live Action (hard spoilers ahead. Also, warning: itās long.):
- Firstly, the casting. The absolute Best casting decision in this whole movie, visuals-and-acting-wise, is Isshin hands down. He LOOKS like Isshin, he ACTS like Isshin-- actually, Movie!Isshin > Manga!Isshin. They toned down the goof a tiny bit, played up his love and concern for the kids, and put him in an APRON for 90% of his screentime and made him the homemaker. (A++++ MOVE, WHY THE HELL WAS YUZU COOKING FOR EVERYBODY AT THE AGE OF NINE. BAD DECISION KUBO).
- Second best casting decision is Kuchiki Rukia. I remember when her stills first came out I wasnāt 100% on this casting because sure she was gorgeous but she looked????? SO YOUNG????? but guys, she nailed it. NAILED IT. Hana Sugisaki based goddess and if u arenāt her fan now you will be by the time the movie ends.
- Sota Fukushi as Ichigo.... hm. Given that my only criteria when drawing Ichigo is to make him as hot as humanly possible, it was 100% guaranteed that any actor they put up for the role would fall short of my visual expectations from an Ichigo. NGL there are more good looking men out there than Sota Fukushi but to quote both Ro and I from our rabb.it chat during the movie...... sota fukushi hard smashĀ
(- ok but a serious dilemma: are we attracted to him because heās attractive, or because heās playing ichigo and ichigoās attractive????
-also, chadās actor hard smash as well)
- SPEAKING of Chad.... he had. Minimal role in the movie but I love that they showed a bit of his bromance with Ichigo. It was always such a cute friendship and they did it justice with what little they showed! Anyway, I like his casting and Orihimeās too, visually speaking.Ā
- The other casts were fine. Not !!!! worthy but like not terrible casting either. Honestly I feel like Miyavi as Byakuya could have really worked if they hadnāt given him that... AWFUL hair. The hair is even more awful in the movie than it is in the still cuts. Believe it.Ā
- A final note on the casting... I really hated noticing this but Orihimeās actress? Erina Mano? Looks a LOT like the actress they cast for Masaki and i hate noticing it but I did. But itās not time for the ir tea/ih salt yet that comes later
- Secondly: Characterisation. Overall decent, but you can really tell that like... they spent the most amount of care on getting the central IR dynamic right and sorta just wentĀ ālol thatās good enoughā for the others. Itās almost like they spent all of their characterisation budget on IR and had minimal left over to spare for minor characters (e.g: Orihime). Youāll see what I mean.
- Once again, hands down best characterisation in the whole movie is Isshin and Rukia. Isshinās bodily comedy with Ichigo was done SO realistically, in a way thatās funny and not too over-the-top. The way they kept playing off each other as slightly overbearing father and moody teenage son was FANTASTIC. And one of the moments that had me MOST emotional in this movie was when Isshin was shown by Ichigoās bedside, taking care of him while heās recovering from injuries. Ichigo, upon waking from a dream of his mum, asks Isshin if he ever dreams of her. Isshinās answer?Ā āEvery nightā. EVERY NIGHT, MOTHERFUCKER. GOD I was never a hard isshimassa stan but this movie got me FEELING things for themĀ
- Hanaās interpretation of Rukia is FANTASTIC. Unbelievably spot on. The emotional unavailability, her rigid initial adherence to what she believes is the shinigami code, the adorable naivete re: human world customs, the way she steamrollers over Ichigo, the way that, no matter how hard she tries to be aloof, she canāt hide the fact that sheĀ cares. She cares so much. And honestly, if thereās one thing this movie does well, itās how they managed to get those manga-panel comic violence situations to translate so well to reality. Isshin-on-Ichigo violence translated well, and the Rukia-on-Ichigo violence translates excellently as well.Ā Their little bickering scenes play out EXACTLY how I, at least, imagined them to go, and I couldnāt be happier about it. Also, I honestly think her looking really young works to her advantage, because it really gives you a sense of likeā¦ how bemused Ichigo must be by this whole situation. My predominant thought every time hana is on screen is SHEāS SO CUTE AND LOVELY I CANāT DEAL WITH IT, except this tiny girl who you can only think of as ācuteā is likeā¦. Bossing you around and beating your ass with a sword and instilling fucking philosophy lessons in you. Itās so surreal? And if itās surreal for US then just imagine how surreal it must be for Ichigo.
- Sotaās Ichigo.... once again, hmm. HisĀ ātrying to be coolā acting (i.e. during the fight scenes) was cringey, but I canāt tell if thatās his acting skill or just the fact that what looksĀ ācoolā on manga panels inVARIABLY look cringey in real life. Probably the latter. And I think heās a LITTLE too growly for my taste, but then again, Iām used to post-timeskip Ichigo whoās a bit more... low-key cynical rather than prickly. Initial Ichigo was pretty abrasive, so I guess thatās in-character.Ā Also, his most-said line of dialogue in this movie is āHAH??ā which is hilarious and very in-character. Honestly, Hana as Rukia is straight up excellent for the whole duration of the movie but I definitely think Sota shone MOST when he was acting in combination with Isshin or Rukia. Whatever I think about his individual acting skills, he definitely had chemistry with those actors in terms of dynamics.
- Guys, the IR in this is fantastic. Brilliant. Like I said, their bickering plays out to a TEE how I imagined things to go. Literally cannot fault their bickering. Their soft heartfelt moments are SO GOOD too. And they were all shot soā¦. Intimately? Their softer scenes were shot with such heartbreaking tenderness and I justā¦.. ugh. Hana Sugisaki REALLY brought her acting A-game. ALSO THE WAY LITERALLY EVERYONE THINKS THEYāRE DATING??? RENJI SHOWS UP AND IS LIKE āOOPS I THINK I KILLED YOUR BOYFRIENDā TO RUKIA. RENJI SAYS THAT. BYAKUYA THINKS SHEāS TOO āEMOTIONALLY INVOLVEDā. Not to even mention Keigo and Tatsuki and Orihimeā¦ā¦. God. Absolutely unbelievable.
- Now, if I was being picky and HAD to talk about a few gripesā¦. Letās see. It takes Ichigo more time to warm up to Rukia than in canon, and heās more of an asshole to her in this time period too. But yāknow, thatās a very minor gripe. The other teeny tiny gripe I have about the IR is likeā¦. A gripe but also not a gripe at the same time lmfao. OK so at the end when Renji and Byakuya are trying to take Rukia away, Ichigo plants himself in front of Rukia and says āIām going to protect youā and he repeats this multiple times in the fight, which, yes, extremely shippy, Iām going to die on the pavement et al, but alsoā¦ this might be a weird gripe for some, because the ir dynamic has always been them protecting and saving each other. But not in so many words? Itās always been a very equal protection dynamic, partly because Rukia wonāt LET him be her protector. I subscribe to the meta that this is precisely why sheās good for Ichigo. Itās also what drives him up the wall, because WHY WONāT SHE LET HIM KEEP HER SAFE, but itās the fact that Rukia REFUSES to be one of his āprotected peopleā, the fact that Rukia DEMANDS equal footing to him, that quashes down the more destructive aspects of his will to protect. But yeah, I feel like that line ā āIām going to protect you/herā, repeated multiple timesāsort of erases the inherent equality in their dynamic and puts Rukia in the āprotectedā pile. But thatās just because the movie didnāt have enough time for the rest of the arc. Look honestly the ir in the movie is FINE. The only reason Iām even bringing this up is because I have the manga version to compare it to, and itās an unfair comparison to begin with because obviously the manga has so much more to work with. Overall, if youāre worried about the IR characterisation in this movieādonāt be. They hard carried the whole thing. Sota and Hana are an absolute DELIGHT to watch playing off each other. They have GREAT chemistry supported by well-shot scenes and good dialogue. 11/10 worth watching just for these two alone.
- Yuzu and Karin. Even though they changed their designs to look identical in the movie (Iām guessing for the instant visual cue of āoh theyāre twins!ā), Iām glad they kept their personalities the same. Karin is snarky as ever, Yuzu is sweet. So +1 for that. But then they made Yuzu (Karin?) say āOnii-chan, Iām scaredā during the fishbone D attack, rather than the canonical āget away, youāll get hurtā. Whichā¦ look, fair, sheās eleven, I think thatās more realistic, but ALSO YOU JUST???? CHANGED HER WHOLE CHARACTERISATION. CAN WE PUT SOME RESPECT ON HER NAME PLEASE
- Uryuuā¦ā¦hmm. They made him a LITTLE more chill than he was in the manga, but he was such a dramatic character in canon already that he still comes off pretty darn dramatic in the movie. I did really like his characterisation, but he had such little screentime that Iām finding it difficult to likeā¦ do any substantial comparisons to his manga character. Iām thinking I might need a rewatch to solidify my opinions on Uryuu. But his little scene at the very end with Ichigo after they all lose their memories of Rukia is very sweet and makes me wonder about their dynamic if they hadnāt had all this quincy-shinigami bs to sort through.
- Chad was in the movie even less than Uryuu, but I have no complaints about his characterisation. Pretty accurate to manga canon.
- Guys I LOVE Keigo in this movie. āHe died on the spotā Iconic roast. LET KEIGO ROAST ICHIGO 2K18
- Tatsuki was eh. She wasnāt in the movie long enough for me to really have an opinion on her characterisation, and itās unfortunate that the only part of her character they brought from manga canon was the āgive Orihime bad advice on how to date Ichigoā part, but whatever. Itās not technically WRONG characterisation, just not the FULL characterisation.
- Orihimeā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ god, Orihime. Look you guys know that even though I have my āand NONE FOR ORIHIME BYEā days, theyāre mostly in jest, and I actually do appreciate her as a character. I like her, mostly! I think sheās fascinating to write about and explore! I think she deserved good things, better things than what the ending set her up for!
- But Iād strangle movie Orihime without hesitation. Bye bitch
- OK, you know how you thought anime Orihime with her constant āKurosaki-kunās was annoying??? Movie orihime was WORSE. Movie Orihime? Straight up yandere. She literally doesnāt have a single appearance where sheās not talking about Ichigo or being weirdly jealous of Ichigo and Rukiaās friendship or worrying about Ichigo in an overbearing, over-the-top way. And Iām actually really frustrated and disappointed about this, because early Karakura Orihime was ACTUALLY A GOOD CHARACTER!!!!!! Orihime, imo, is the most egregious OOC in this movie. Which is a shame, because the rest of the characterisation was actuallyā¦ ok and decent
- Renji and Byakuyaā¦.. ohhhh boy. Renji and Byakuya are characterised as straight up villains for the whole movie with no redemption. Thereās no nuance of them being possibly friendly and/or having concern for Rukia at all throughout the whole movie, which could be OOC depending on how you look at it, but honestly it makes sense considering this movie only covers up to chapter 56 Broken Coda and does NONE of the SS arc. Basically, their characterisations are how we would characterise them based on the one time they came to collect Rukia. Theyāre cold, uncaring, think humans arenāt worth anything, and that emotions are a human weakness. RENJI STRAIGHT UP SWINGS A SWORD AT AN UNARMED CIVILIAN CLOTHED RUKIA (yes I know it happened in the manga too but. Itās a lot more shocking watching it happen real-time) and also STABBED!!!! URYUU!!!!!! IN THE BACK!!! WHILE HE WASNāT DOING ANYTHING THREATENING!!! So, uh, this movie really said āfuck renji rightsā. God Iām imagining likeā¦ if ur introduction to Bleach was through this movie, and you decided to look up how the manga ends and itās RENRUKI and youāre like ?????????????? THE DUDE SWUNG A SWORD AT HER????? Like FORGET IH, this movie really fucking hated rr. Whichā¦ im not mad about lmfao
- Final note on characterisation: as usual, IR fucking hard carries, but what ELSE is new for this franchise. Isshin was a surprising dark horse. Overall, characterisation FINE, not OOC with one glaring exception, but sometimes because of time constraints certain characters didnāt get their FULL RANGE of characterisation.
- THIRDLY: overall technical excellence of the movie in terms of script, camera angles, choreography, CGI, etc etc
- My one line summary for this isā¦. Itās an anime live action adaptation. I hope ur not expecting much from this department at all
- Like, in terms of is it a GOOD movie? Lmfao. I enjoyed the hell out of it, sure, but I donāt think someone who has no idea what bleach is would a) understand what the heck is going on OR b) find the story to be well-paced and well-told. Like, I KNEW what was coming and what was going on, and even I found the movie to be a bit disjointed, kind of like old metal machinery that needs oiling to get going.
- Honestly this movie is similar to the manga in thatā¦ technically speaking itās not great, but its strengths lie in the character arcs and the overall poetic parallels it tries to pull. It may not have been the most artistically executed, but I could tell that they really tried to put the parallel in between IR protecting each other and Masaki dying to protect Ichigo. Like, an attempt was noted! It was appreciated! Obviously they donāt do it with as much grace as the manga did but yāknow, they tried!
- The script was actually really great in this movie. Bleach is a very snarky manga and the script really showcases that. Everyone shows a lot of sass. I like that. The one exception to the script being good was whenever a hollow opened its mouth to speak. They really gave the hollows dialogue like āI WANT YOUR SOULā and āGIVE ME YOUR SOULāā¦. Like. Someone got paid for that dialogue and they really shouldnāt have.
- I honestly donāt have an opinion on the CGI. Ro kept saying that the cgi was BAD and like I guess it was, but Iām pretty lenient about CGI in general. I already know itās going to be CGI so unless itās BLATANTLY fake I overlook it.
- But there is this ONE SCENE of Renji going into shikai that looks so awfully fake that even I was like āok no that was BADā so I guess CGI bad
- The choreo in the fight scenes is messy and disjointed and very cringey. I canāt believe they managed to pull manga-style comical violence in REAL LIFE and make it look believable and funny, but couldnāt choreography a decent fight sceneā¦ā¦. Man idk. I guess they really DID spend all their budget on making IR as excellent as possible.
- Overall: technically speaking itās a terrible movie, but will that hinder your enjoyment of it? Probably not. Watch it just for the excellent banter.
- FINALLY: Miscellaneous yelling about various scenes through 120% Ichiruki-filtered glasses.
- Guys, this movie. This movie. They really sat down and said āok give them literally every single early-karakura ichiruki fanfic trope situation everā and thatās it, thatās the movie
- ICHIGO KEEPS LEANING DOWN RIGHT INTO RUKIAāS FACE!!!! THEY HAVE NOOOOO CONCEPT OF PERSONAL SPACE!!!! Which I guess is canon but THEY KEEP!!!!! LEANING!!!!! INTO EACH OTHER!!!! I will DIE
- The sPARRING????????? THE SPARRING?????
- Ichigo smirks while sparring her. Sheās kicking his ass and goddammit, he LIKES it
- They legit made Rukia tackle Ichigo and pin him to the ground and then they made Ichigo flip them around
- And then they made ORIHIME WALK IN ON THAT
- UN!!!! BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!
- (Sidenote: they made Orihime act so weirdly jealous of that?? Likeā¦ wtf orihime. Youāre not his girlfriend like she has no rights to be acting like thisā¦. Look the Orihime characterisation in this movie is A Mess)
- They have conversations through shut closet doors while ichigoās lying on his bed THIS APPEARS IN EVERY. SINGLE. IR EARLY KARAKURA FIC EVER IM
- Ichigo: CAN YOU GET OUT OF MY CLOSET. NO YOU CANāT LIVE IN MY HOUSE
- Also Ichigo, the INSTANT he canāt find Rukia in his closet: WHERE IS SHE. LET ME JUST RUN AROUND IN THE DARK OUTSIDE TO FIND HER. HEY URYUU HOW DO I GET TO THE AFTERLIFE. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CANāT BRING HER BACK. SO WHAT IF I DO, HUH? WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT. FIGHT ME
- Also ichigo becomes so much SOFTER towards Rukia after a certain point in this movie andā¦. Godā¦ā¦ I love that you can see that switch in Sotaās acting. Iām going to CRY
- OK THIS IS A VERY SHORT SCENE BUT AT ONE POINT RUKIA LANDS ON A ROOFTOP WITH AN INJURED ICHIGO AND SHE LIT. RUBS HER HANDS ALL OVER THE BARE SKIN ON HIS CHEST BC SHEāS RUBBING MEDICINE INTO HIM!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!! WHEREāS THE M-15 RATING ON THIS MOVIE BC SHE LEGIT!!! HAD HER HANDS!!!! ALL OVER HIM!!!!! Ro and I shouted abt this so much God
- The final fight is RIDICULOUS in terms of HOW MUCH ICHIGO WONāT STAY DOWN and itās framed SO dramatically lmfao but yāknow, itās shot in a very IR light, Iāll take it
- Ro and I literally were just like ITāS THE POWER OF LOVE BITCH bc he legit just KEPT getting up it was ridiculous
- Also rukiaās final speech to ichigo after she does her whole broken coda ādonāt touch my brother lowly humanā spiel isā¦. Beautiful. Fucking excellent
- āyouāre rude and brash and Iām sick of all humans especially youā but like. Why is this literally kateās ā10 things I hate about youā speech at the end of that movie
- ICHIGO DOESNāT TAKE HIS EYES OFF RUKIA THE WHOLE TIME SHEāS ERASING HIS MEMORIES. DOESNāT EVEN BLINK. THIS IS SOME EP 342 TEAS ALL OVER AGAIN. FUCK. IāM GOING TO!!!! DIE!!!
- Ok so my opinion on how they changed the end: it was necessary to tie things all up in one movie but that doesnāt mean I donāt hate the fact that ichigo ostensibly forgot rukia when in canon HEāS THE ONLY ONE THAT REMEMBERED
- I guess the final scene where he looks at her writing on his textbook and smiles could be a sort of clue that heās starting to remember. Man idk I think Iād just feel really cheated as a viewer who isnāt coming from a bleach manga/anime background, that everyone just conveniently āforgotā. Itās equivalent to an āit was all a dream!ā kind of ending imo. Itās a copout. But at the same time I can see why it was necessary :ā/
- Also, this exchange with uryuu at the end where they exchange hellos before pulling up short and going āwait- do I know you?ā āno. but good to know youā was SO HEARTBREAKING BUT SO GOOD I REALLY DID LOVE THAT
- Whoo ok Iām SURE Iāve forgotten some details but this is already EXCESSIVELY long so. Final FINAL thoughts:
- The quality of the movie is, obviously, not great, but if you were worried about weird chara interpretations and relationships, donāt be. Unless youāre an IH/RRstan or an Orihime fan. This will not be a fun movie for you. But then again, you managed to work through 686 chapters of a manga that clearly wasnāt fun for you and seemed to be ok with it, so maybe this movie wonāt bother you either.
- The script is surprisingly solid and has genuinely good, occasionally touching, snarky, sassy dialogue. Good attempts at poeticism and various parallels and callbacks.
- Ichiruki fucking hard carries, and so does isshin. I love uryuu but that may just be my uryuu bias talking.
- Objectively, maybe a 4, 5/10. Ichiruki-wise? 8/10. Obviously this was written in a high straight after the movie and like, maybe after a few days or like a rewatch or w/e my opinions may change. But rn? God I love stanning legends, viva la ichiruki fuck you
#bleach#bleach live action#ichiruki#fangirl life#incredible.... guys who wants to watch the movie again w me bc honestly im up for a massive rewatch#bleach liveblogging
