what are your favorite episodes of g1 featuring the constructicons?

Only episodes where the Constructicons are absolutely essential to the plot, if they are only in the background or only have a throwaway line it doesn't count!

From worst to best:

7.Secret of Omega Supreme

I know, I know, controversial! This episode is truly more about the titular character than the Constructicons and it introduces my least favorite origin for them. Not a bad episode and it has some cool scenes involving my boy Devastator, but eh... Don't care!

6.The Autobot Run

This episode has a laughably bad premise, even for G1! But dare I say, the character interactions and quips save this from total oblivion, and the Constructicons aren't an exception to that! So many great interactions and lines (Long Haul saying "Finally! We're gonna make little Autobots out of big ones AHAHAHA!" and "at last, conflict!", how can you not love it?). Devastator also has a great fighting sequence! You know, great as in stupidly fun, like him hitting the Autobots as if they were bowling pins. I remember rewatching the scene where they de-combined Devastator over and over again, for some reason I was obsessed with the delivery there.

5.The Core

This episode is shit from the ass in terms of plot, like... We already have a better episode... With the same "plan of the week". I just wish this one focused more on the "Devastator is now an Autobot weapon" side of the plot and was better paced.

That being said, I still adore the Constructicons here! Their interactions are awesome and I love how this established them as friends, like... Waow... I also adore how big of a focus Devy has, he even gets to save the day!

4.City of Steel

The episode where the Constructicons shit-talk each other, make an alligator, and Devastator does King Kong. Perfect.

Not only do I love their banter but this episode has my favorite Scrapper scene: him forgetting the word "damage" for no reason... Like WHY? Love my ADHD king. This is also the episode where Mixy has a stutter... More than perfect.

3.Heavy Metal War

Introduction episode, what can I say?

Despite them being the secondary plot, I very much adore them here. This episode establishes Scrapper as their leader AND introduces the Dinobots as one of their rivals (their superior rivals if I say so myself.) I also love how Devastator comes in as a surprise, like WOW they combine into a big robot, how novel, I'll buy a toy! I also adore how they defeat Devy by making him shit his pants in fear of another combiner... Girl, you're so pathetic...

2.Triple takeover

My favorite G1 episode... And it just so happens to have the Constructicons there! What a joy!

I absolutely love traitorous Constructicons as a concept, these guys do not care about Megatron at all ahahah.

This is also one of the episodes where we have Scrapper building a THRONE out of near-dead Autobots and sitting on it... You're awesome, Scrappy...

Of course, the best part is the Constructicons busting in on Blitzwing and demanding him to own his part of the deal... And the fucking idiot curses off the six guys who turn into a giant robot... Great stuff.

Also... How did Megatron defeat Devastator? Is he that pathetic? My big loser is actually a loser?

1.The Master Builders

THE PERFECT CONSTRUCTICON-FOCUSED EPISODE! If you're going to watch something with them, watch this one.

I love moody Grapple and reserved Hoist, such a cute duo of characters already AND THEN you put the Constructicons with them? Perfect!

This is also the episode where the Constructicons are shown to be two-faced bastards who change on the turn of a dime, and well, I find this better than brain-washing, sue me. I also love their personalities here, cheery Scrapper casually convincing Grapple to let them work on his project, and then acting the same after they decide to betray Grapple on Megatron's command... Wtf is your problem.

I also adore the Constructicons making Grapple do their work for them, ahahah. They remind me of older engineers/technicians messing with the new guy at work for kicks and giggles.

I also love how much of fuckups the Constructicons are... Good job on conspiring behind Megatron's back then immediately getting caught red-handed and making up a fucking lie on the spot, you're terrible.

Devastator is also at his peak here. This is the episode that inspired my characterization of him... He just messes with the Autobots and is outsmarted by them and defeated by the Constructicons' own work... The irony... Is rich. Like, how much of a jerk can he be?? He laughs at Optimus Prime, he dismisses Cliffjumper and he SMIRKS when he falls on the ground and somehow grabs warpath.

I need him dead. Immediately.

Olorun is annoying because he's the unbridled Feral Cuteness of Razor crossed with the autistic gentle bug loverness of Sig puyo puyo and executes Wanderers whole "my very existence is a mistake and I can fix it by killing myself" deal in such an infinitely more competent way that he totally outshines both Xilonen and Chasca in the formers own patch. Better yet unlike Mualani he's allowed to be wrong and spoiled and make mistakes. His design sucks balls. His kit is ass. You're meant to run him in taser but both beidou and fishcl shit on him. OKAY I HAVE COMPLETED THE AQ NOW AND BOY WAS IT BORING

Tbh, my general take on Ororon was "would've been better if not crammed into Act 3 (and also if the Capitano storyline wasn't about as interesting as watching paint dry)" - like, the concept behind him is WAY more interesting than Scara's AND works for Ororon instead of it feeling like a tacked on afterthought.... I would've liked to see more drama behind his and Capitano's plan but, lol?

but oh my god his design is so baaaad why is he so colourful. tone it down. GET A NEW HOODIE

It really is laughable how little focus Xilonen and Chasca got... given this really was Citlali and Ororon's patch for a decent amount of it, it's super weird they weren't the ones dropping here? I would've liked party Citlali for that part of the quest. Xilonen might've gotten pushed into 5.1 to finish up the Tribe Reputation Quests but dear god she barely did anythinggg (and chasca was literally just there to be hero no. 6. waow. i was worried about the hero storyline last patch but it was way more rushed than i could've even imagined)

I think she's my favourite even if her design ALSO sucks (also HYV's 4star balancing game is absolutely atrocious lately, they really fucked themselves over with the year 1 4stars and how broken the support archons are LMAO)

The 25th Year | Week 1 | The Beginning

Hi, I'm Bradley! I'm a solo developer working on an open world RPG called The 25th Year.

Every week from now until I release the game, I'll be posting an update blog where I share the progress I've made. This is the first time I've ever done anything like this, so I’m sorry if it sucks.

Most of this week was spent moving to Godot from Unity and figuring out how I'd make this game work in this new engine, so unfortunately there's not a lot of visual material for me to show off.

Instead I'm going to talk a bit about some technical stuff. Specifically, I’m going to talk about the three most important things an open world game needs:

World streaming

Terrain

HLOD

First off, streaming. For those unaware, world streaming is a technique used by all open world games (and a few linear ones) to determine what stuff should and shouldn't be loaded.

There are a few different ways to go about this, I've chosen to use the grid-based cell system. (similar to what Bethesda uses)

For this, we simply split the world into a big grid of cells and only load the ones closest to the player.

This system should be fairly easy to implement, however, I haven’t started working on it yet. Why? Well, there’s a problem. You see, I want mod support. And for that, I need to support stuff like adding, editing, and removing stuff from cells.

At first glance, this doesn’t seem too hard. To add new stuff, I could just load any additions the mods make after the ‘base’ cell. For editing… well, I’m not exactly sure how I’d do that, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be too difficult. Deleting, though? That’s where I’m a bit stumped.

So far, I’ve come up with three possible solutions:

1. Load the map normally, then delete stuff.

Problem: Loading and spawning an object just to delete it is dumb and inefficient.

2. Copy the base game’s map files, apply the edits, then load the copy.

Problem: This one also feels a bit inefficient, because it’d be using more disk space than necessary.

3. Ignore Godot’s built in scene system, and create my own.

Problem: That’d be a lot of work.

I’m probably going to go with option 2 because I think it’ll require the least amount of time to implement. Though, I won’t be too happy about wasting the extra disk space.

OK, that’s enough about streaming, let’s talk about terrain!

Unlike streaming, I actually have something kinda presentable, so here it is!

Waow.

Now I know what you’re thinking. “Bradley, it’s all one color! Where’s the grass? The dirt? The sand?????” Well, I technically already have a system for coloring the terrain… but it looks like shit right now, so you’ll have to wait for next week’s blog to witness the incredible magic of colors.

As you might’ve noticed, I’m going with a heightmap system. Basically, it’s fast and easy to implement, but I can’t easily do things like caves and overhangs. I’m fine with this though, as the alternative would be to implement a voxel terrain system, which would take way longer, and would probably run way worse.

Alright, onto the last system, HLOD!

You’re probably wondering what those funny letters stand for. Guess.

WRONG! It stands for Hierarchical Level of Detail.

Basically, you take all of the models in an area, reduce their quality, and combine them all into one big model. If you’ve ever played an open world game and seen something like a town or ruin in the distance, it was probably an HLOD.

Technically, Godot already includes an HLOD system, but I can’t use it for this game. It seems like you can’t just load the HLOD on its own, so I need to come up with my own system. I’ve got an idea cooking in my head, but I want to try it first before I reveal it.

I actually wanted to include more detail in this post, but I’ve had to rewrite half of this fucking thing 6 times now thanks to Tumblr’s garbage undo system. This was actually meant to come out yesterday, but I felt was going to punch a hole through my fucking monitor, so I delayed it.

In the future, all new posts will come out Saturday, at whenever-I-feel-like-writing-it PM! Like I said at the start of this blog, this is my first time ever doing anything like this, so I hope you liked it, and I’m sorry if it sucked!

Volume 6 of Maerwyn's adventures

- Decided to put off the MSQ for a bit (hooray for getting sidetracked) and pick up a second class, will try a DPS, specifically archer (bard eventually) after learning from Xeno that they're more arrow based than music based which was my main source of apprehension since I like archery in games but not the bard music thing (for combat at least)

- Back to the ol’ human default outfit, but man does it look good. - The Heavyshot -> Straightshot only having a 20% chance is weird - I swear every time I’m in Gridania it’s either raining or night time, don’t think I’ve ever seen this place lit up - Being a ranged DPS for Fates is kinda wonky, can’t sit and face tank like I can with Gladiator, so ended up running around in circles. Idk if I actually took less damage though, also sometimes when I use a skill my character would run back into the enemy but sometimes they wouldn’t? - Waow this Silvairre guy’s a dick - Luciane pretty, we’re 2 for 2 on pretty guild leaders - Finally, daytime Gridania, it’s quite pretty but boy are there a lot of peopel around the Aetheryte

- Just beating up squirrels and ladybugs, back to the beginning! - I can’t tell if I’m leveling faster or slower. I get an xp bonus but I don’t have the MSQ to feed me xp so i’m doing side quests, It doesn’t feel like a slog though so it’s good enough for me :D - I know it’s just a sidequest to introduce me to the housing area, but I always feel bad for the NPCs that can’t buy a house there. - Hmm there appears to be some kind of tethering mechanic where if I run too far? The monster becomes invulnerable and runs back. Probably based on distance from its spawn point.

- This sure is a look - Man Gridania hates foreigners huh - Back home in Ul’dah to try and scrounge up some more side quests - That.. was a weird questline but I got a funny dance out of it.

6 or 7 I guess ? I followed the last tour of the original band in all the towns I could go to, lol. We even get to know the band members, help them to pack their things after the lives and take them back to their hotel with our own car, that was really fun.

I fell in love with Kimi no na Wa (Your Name) at first sight, and had to have the OST as soon as I got back home. The songs are just perfect. I love the vocalist's voice, it's so deep and clear and smooth and...waow.

How did you get into 10?

I went to a metal festival and saw them and I was struck by their guitars and lyrics. Then I listened to their albums and they're just so strong, each being a concept album with a whole powerful touching story. I am lucky they're french so I could get to see them live at least 5 times, and each one of them was worth it.

The Only Design Philosophy In The Future Is “More Angles!”

Coming up with a new sci-fi aesthetic is tough. Luckily, there’s a shortcut that does about 80 percent of the work: Add some unnecessary angles! Tilt half of it, chop off a corner — it doesn’t matter how you make those angles happen, or what they might possibly be good for. Everything in the future has at least seven unnecessary zigzags.

Universal TelevisionThis isnt paper; this is space paper. You can tell because they cut the corners off, as is space custom.

Most cars in modern sci-fi movies are nothing but contemporary designs with all the curves replaced by straight lines. Here’s one from the original Total Recall that is so much from the future that you might almost say it looks stupid and ridiculous.

Here on Earth, we eat a wide variety of food. In fact, whole industries have been built around preparing, packaging, marketing, and ultimately ingesting food. Seriously, if you haven’t heard of food, you should Google it. People go nuts for this stuff. But in science fiction, aliens eat insects, grubs, or worms. That’s it. Aliens might have similar dinnerware and mealtime rituals, but they almost always eat swarming plates of live bugs. Take, for instance, the Klingons. They’re a proud warrior race that should probably be eating seared Gorn ribeye for every meal, but instead they sit down to bowls of worms, like a bunch of chickens. They gussy them up like they’re some kind of delicacy called Gagh, but look at it. It’s worms.

In every dork’s favorite failed show, Firefly, they live in a future so Asian-influenced that people curse in fluent Mandarin, and yet none of them seem to know any Chinese people.

In Blade Runner, the entirety of Los Angeles is a grimy, rain-drenched Little Tokyo. This makes a bit more sense than LA becoming a grimy, rain-drenched El Salvador, but it still has a lot of pagodas and geisha for a multicultural cyber metropolis.

All of this would barely be worth mentioning, except that none of these series have an Asian person as anything but an extra, for the most part. It’s as if every sci-fi universe shares a common history wherein all the important Asians were wiped out and the architects of their genocide said, “Oooh, but let’s keep their furniture and robes!”

Artificial Humans Always Involve Some Kind Of Milky Liquid

If you see an android in a sci-fi movie, then it’s almost guaranteed that sucker is somehow dependent on white goo. It’s as if robot scientists said, “Look, we can build you a perfect replica of a person, but it only works if we fill it with satin finish house paint.”

In Westworld, the process of creating a host involves submerging an almost-complete body — full skeleton, developed muscles — into a vat of thick milky stuff. The production crew calls it “the skin dip,” and it’s a protein liquid that builds all of the body’s remaining tissues using sci-fi magic.

HBO“BEHOLD AND TREMBLE AT THE HORROR MILK HAS CREATED.” — The National Dairy Council

They probably got that from the original Ghost In The Shell (seen again in the live-action remake), wherein the final stage of the Major’s birth involves dipping her body into a vat of white liquid. Again, a mechanical skeleton monster goes in, and a sexy, sexy human comes out.

Paramount Pictures“Warning: Your sex robot will ship covered in a flaky layer of dried goo. And it won’t be the first time, amirite?” — Shell Instruction Manual

The Alien franchise also features human replicants and white goo. It’s just that this goo squirts out of them like a terrible milk truck accident any time they get hurt. We first saw it 1979, when Ash was torn apart in Alien.

20th Century FoxHe took it pretty well.

We saw it again in 1986, when Lance Henriksen got himself gutted in Aliens, and it happened more recently in 2017’s Alien: Covenant. Basically, any time someone makes a movie about human-like robots is a great time to be a white fluid salesman.

In The Future, There Will Be One Font To Rule Them All

Any fully realized sci-fi world contains many different societies, nations, and peoples. This should mean a huge variety in graphic design and typography, but apparently there will be a moment in our future when we all come together and decide that we need only one font: Eurostile.

If the future needs to say something, it does so in Eurostile. The font was originally created by an Italian designer in 1962, and it’s all sci-fi movies have needed since. Here are but a few of the universes which Eurostile has taken over, as well as a fun rhyme you can use to remember them all.

PixarIt’s the only font to survive the apocalypse of Wall-E …

Universal Pictures… and its used to describe Jaegers as they battle kaiju near Bali.

TriStar PicturesIt’s the default web font in Johnny Mnemonic‘s time …
