#that's also why the batfam not being blood related is important because it's the most found family of the found family

Okay, I keep seeing this post and it had, like, 900 notes last time, so I need to respond.
Yes, Steph and Barbara are part of the batfam.
This fandom seems to not fucking understand what a found family is. A found family doesn't follow the traditional family's dynamic. People aren't blood related or legally related. Have y'all never seen a friend group in a media being referred as a found family?! That doesn't mean they are siblings, or that some of them are the parents, or that they cannot date. It just means that they are close like a family should, that they can depend on each other always and forever like a family should. Whatever happens, they are a family.
Found family is LITERALLY one of th theme of Batman. The batfam has ALWAYS been a found family. All these people who lost their blood family and found each other to fight for justice. Bruce lost his family when he was a kid, he is building a new one from the ground, and a family isn't just his children. Bruce and Alfred are not blood related, and Alfred is barely referred to as Bruce's father-figure in anything Batman related. However, he was always seen as Bruce's family. Bruce also sees some members of the Justice League as his family (Clark, for example). Lucius and Leslie have also always been his family, and Lucius is not his father at all, the man has another family, a traditional one, but he is still in the batfam. Dick spend DECADES not being adopted, but he still considered Bruce and Alfred his family. Dick also sees the Titans as his family, that doesn't make his teammates his siblings or stops him from dating them. Tim, even tho he is not Bruce's son and has a family, is referred by Dick as "his brother". Dick and Tim literally DID NOT want to be adopted by Bruce, but the man and his butler were still family for them, even when they did NOT want Bruce as their father. Cass and Bruce go through all Batgirl (2000) having a father-daughter coded relationship, and Cass and Barbara have a mother-daughter coded relationship, and her biological parents are there sometimes, and she isn't Bruce's daughter yet. Cass is both Bruce and Barbara's daughter. Barbara has always been seen as a part of the batfam since she first appeared, before a lot of us were even born, and it's not because she is Bruce's daughter or dating Dick, it's because the bats are a family that don't give a shit about traditional family's dynamic. Damian is the only one who actually call Bruce "Father", most of the time the others don't. Dick has lived 20 years with Bruce in his life, as his father-figure, and he never calls him "Dad". Some comics don't even referred to anyone than Damian as Bruce's kid. Some comics like to remind everyone that Bruce is Dick and Tim's father, but most of them do not. Most of the time, they are just a bunch of young people and teens living on his property and eating his food. And even through all of this, they were a family. It's not about blood, it's not about adoption and some papers, it's not about Bruce being your father, it's about trust.
The Wayne family and the Batfam are two different things. Huntress, Helena Bertinelli, is in the batfam. Azrael, Jean-Paul Valley, is in the batfam sometimes (in Batman: Detective Comics 2016, he is). Harley Quinn is also in the batfam sometimes (in Injustice). Lucius Fox and Luke are in the batfam. Harper and Collen Row are in the batfam, but Bruce kind of sees them as his children (in Batman and Robin Eternal at least).
People aren't a part of the batfam because they are Bruce's children, but because they choose each others, again and again, through the highs and the lows. It's about fighting Bruce, taking his shit, and still helping his ass.
And while we are it, batkids doesnā€™t mean "Bruce's children", it means "the kids around the big Bat, helping in the Bat's mission, that are the Bat's responsibility". YES, Barbara is a batkid, and it doesn't make Bruce her father or a father-figure. She was a kid and batgirl, so she is a batkid.

Batfam and Mental Health
orOkay so I love Batman and all the things surrounding it. Like the idea of a random rich man who happens to be an orphan just suddenly adopting a ton of children is ridiculous, and thoroughly entertaining.
But I am also a big fan of psychology, and learning about the mind. So mental illness and related things are fascinating to me.Ā
I notice that like strangely there is very little stuff about the batfam having mental illnesses or dealing with psychology or therapy. Donā€™t get me wrong there is still a lot addressing these things, but still with the things the family experiences you would think it would be a lot more prevalent in the writing about them, and especially fan fiction about them.
Like I think showing mental health throughĀ  beloved characters would be really cool and could be a tool to destigmatize them. Like showing hero's with them would make really great representation, people could see them and think Oh I can still be a good person and helpful even if my mental disorder makes it hard and for things like depression or ADHD showing which misconceptions are harmful and donā€™t work.Ā
I can also see this in the physical aspect, like I wish a hero would have something like chronic pain or one of the many invisible illnesses. To give representation and show how pushing through the pain can shut a person down for days.Ā
The specific disorders I think would be really interesting of the top of my head is, depression, Anxiety, POTS, Fibromyalgia, Chronic pain, eating disorders, nerve damage, ADHD, Bipolar, OCD, Chronic fatigue, PTSD, c-PTSD, Autism, Elhers Danlos syndrome, And the one I really think would be interesting DID.Ā
Like fore depression, showing how hard it is to get out of bed. Not showing constantly being sad but showing how it can be numbing. Acknowledging that in a disorder like this logic doesnā€™t always win even if you are the most logical person to live.Ā
For anxiety showing how debilitating it can be. Looking into their minds to show the thought process, the mind fight itself and logic. Knowing their fears are unreasonable but not being able to shake the feeling. Show how for different people different things cause anxiety.Ā
POTS or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, (super simply put it is a circulation disorder where upon standing up blood rushes to extremities and can cause all sorts of problems like fainting, pain in your feet, Dizziness, poor temperature regulation, etc. Also I am assuming people know what depression and anxiety is.) would be fascinating to me. Like having a hero that is constantly sitting down or biting down and pushing through the pain even a hero that has to slowly stand up. So in the middle of a battle being shoved down having to slowly stand up or risk fainting or vision completely blacking out for a while. Showing a hero who has learned to fight with no sight because of that very thing.Ā
Or Fibromyalgia (This one I am a little less educated about but from what I understand, it is a disorder characterized by muscle pain and tenderness usually with no known cause, so from what I understand it usually is diagnosed after a ton of other disorders are eliminated and the pain is still occurring, often also has affect on sleep and memory/mood.) Like showing a hero having a particularly hard patrol and having to take a couple days off and constantly going places or trying things to help with the pain.Ā
Or Chronic pain ( from what I understand the main difference between Fibromyalgia and Chronic pain is chronic pain has to do with the nerves and Fibromyalgia has to do with muscles, also Fibromyalgia has other thins to go with it like energy levels and mental functions so memory/mood.) Like a hero having constant pain even if they didnā€™t have a big fight, maybe showing them icing, heating, or taking pain meds and the rest of the family or team being super confused as to why. Before they know showing them freak out and worry that they went on a mission without telling anyone. Showing how it is a constant battle, that sometimes treatments will work and other times, for seemingly no reason they wonā€™t.Ā
I would also like to see eating disorders portrayed by the bat family. Showing how itā€™s not always a conscious choice, sometimes it is more along the lines of choosing something else over eating. Showing how people can use it for control or to punish themselves. Letting there be a male example, reminding people that they can happen to anyone. Allowing people to have representation. Show a recovery, how it is not impossible for anyone but not down playing how hard it is. It is a true and hard fight, and show how it can sneak up on you and drag you back. Not just one easy recovery, that recovery is a choice. You have to want it but you also need help, it is a long hard process and accessibility is everything. Show a family member making them food, show them sometimes eating it and others not. Also donā€™t only show under eating show how people canā€™t stop themselves from eating. Having cabinets locked to keep people out, for their own safety.Ā
Or nerve damage, showing how years of their work and fighting can really mess someone up. Show someone suddenly losing all feeling or sensation in certain parts of their body or constant pain or even pinched nerves. Show how confusing it can be to not know what you are feeling. Show how weird it can be when you realize you are fine or that nothing is touching you or taking it in the opposite direction and not realizing you are hurt or someone is trying to be your attention. I would also love to see the batfam explain any of these injuries to the hero community or to the public. Maybe show the hero community really starting to look into mental and general health services.Ā
ADHD or also ADD, showing how people can use it but also showing how hard it can be to control and fight. How much it can impede focusing and show situations it can put people in. Show a hero forgetting a huge part of their plan and falling but because of some random information from a hyper focus they still save the day.Ā
Bipolar, showing the wild swings and how confusing it can be. Feeling like a different person, struggling with identity and their own decisions. Show them accidently pushing people away but also how hard they work to maintain family and friends that despite how unpredictable they can be their friends still stick around. Or if their friends canā€™t handle it show them peacefully and respectfully stepping out of their life. Show how hard that can be to except but that the future can end up better than you could ever hope.Ā
OCD is really one I wish we saw in the hero's. Show their routines and things they do. Show the thought process, like if I donā€™t properly put the dishes away in fourteen seconds the joker will escape arkham. Show how terrifying the thoughts can be, but show how detail oriented it can make people and the beautiful art and amazing work that they can do. Show a person putting them selves at risk to comply with their routine. Like ignoring injuries to write a report. Show them and family or friends working to change the routine. Show how hard it is the moments they want to turn back and continue and how much they want to stop but show them not giving up and making the differences they want. Show them accomplishing things, show their compulsions actually keeping them safe.
Or even chronic fatigue, Show the fight each morning. Them saving energy, the disconnect between how exhausted you are mentally vs. physically. Show a hero that 50% of the time physically is too exhausted to be in the field so they offer technical support. Show a hero crashing, suddenly just not having enough energy to finish patrol or even get home. So someone has to come pick them up. Show them getting stuck in a fight and how hard it can be to do anything much less a fight.Ā
Let the characters have PTSD or c-PTSD, show flashbacks and being stuck in your head. All of the bat family has lived through horrors please show it affecting them. Show how they get help how they work through it show what can happen and how bad it can get if it is unaddressed.Ā Ā
Show them having autism and how it is just a different way of life that there is nothing inherently wrong with it and how the ignorance that surrounds it and similar disorders can hurt and affect people. Show how it can be simple things that can show it or affect it. Try and look at it from their perspective and what things happen that should not just because they way someone is.Ā
Elhers Danlos syndrome, show the pain, the misdiagnosis, the process, the fight. Show how disabilities like this and several others including ones I have mentioned can cause a person to need medical equipment such as wheelchairs and braces. Show how not everyone using a wheelchair canā€™t walk. Show how limiting it can be and the precautions you have to take but donā€™t make everything about how hard it can be. Show how using a Wheelchair while not ideal can open up so many opportunities. Show them actually being able to go on family vacations and amusement parks because they have a wheelchair. Show how important it is to have ramps and accommodations for similar things so people can participate and so people can actually go places they want. Always show how hard people with disabilities and such work. Show them trying to get treatment and trying new treatments show how it isnā€™t as simple as getting a knee brace or two.Ā
And finally coming to one that absolutely fascinates me, DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder formerly known as multiple personality disorder. But donā€™t do this one completely uneducated, it is already a very stigmatized disorder. Show how Alters communicate. Show how they all work together and that they were made so the body and mind could survive. Make full characters just put them in one body. Show the confusion once they find out, show them slowly realizing and learning signs and what happened to them. Show each of the Alters having different friends and maybe understanding and knowing the family different. Show the different reasons and setups systems can have. Show system responsibility and each Alter working on themselves and to make a life for the system. Show the roles Alters will take. Show the horrible process of fragmenting and what things can cause it but also show healing and people supporting and accepting systems.Ā
Overall showing good parts of all the struggles people can have but not ignoring how hard they can be or glorifying them to people who donā€™t understand. Showing misconceptions and how support can affect these disorders. And most important in my mind, giving hope and a future to look forward to for the people with these disorders.

song lyrics I use to characterize Dick Grayson
This is definitely not everything (& I would love to do more) but itā€™s also Extremely Freaking Long so. Many thanks to @zitkaplushie for chatting w me abt this! I would love to hear your thoughts/additions/etc. If u disagree w any of these, feel free to debate w me but please be civil!!
ā€” OVERALL:
Drag Me Down by One Direction: okay there are tons of parts that fit but this line is the best: ā€œI've got fire for a heart / I'm not scared of the dark / You've never seen it look so easyā€
I think this one is kind of straightforward lol but. The first line kind of tells me that Dick is passionate, and feels more with his heart than his head. The second line is just kind of a tongue in cheek thing like obviously heā€™s not. And the third one is both Dickā€™s confidence and also that itā€™s just TRUE. He makes things look easy, all kinds of things. Itā€™s just a fact.Ā
High Hopes by Panic! at The Disco: ugh this has such good lines but this one: ā€œMama said / Burn your biographies / Rewrite your history / Light up your wildest dreams / Museum victories, every day / We wanted everything, wanted everythingā€
So I think ā€œMamaā€ thru to ā€œdreamsā€ ties back to him becoming Nightwing, or going through different identities and kind of letting himself go with it to an extent. Like he doesnā€™t let it hold him back. The rest of it, like...thatā€™s just Dickā€™s superheroing career. ā€œWeā€ in this case could be him and Bruce, him and the Titans, him and Damian, etc etc
Catch My Breath by Kelly Clarkson: um. the whole song. the whole thing. buuuut one line Iā€™ll analyze will be: ā€œI don't wanna be left behind / Distance was a friend of mine / Catching breath in a web of lies / I've spent most of my life / Riding waves, playing acrobat / Shadowboxing the other half / Learning how to reactā€
ā€œI don't wanna be left behindā€ - he knows this feeling well already and doesnā€™t want to relive it
ā€œDistance was a friend of mine / Catching breath in a web of liesā€ - he has like no civilian friends in canon, and even then heā€™s always lying to somebody about something. There arenā€™t many people he can be truly close to and open with, other than like Donna and Roy and Kory
ā€œI've spent most of my life / Riding waves, playing acrobat / Shadowboxing the other half / Learning how to reactā€ - idk, when I see this it makes me think that heā€™s just lived this life that isnā€™t exactly normal and he recognizes that
Birds by Imagine Dragons: this one makes me so sad but: ā€œI know that / Ooh, birds fly in different directions / Ooh, I hope to see you again / Ooh, birds fly in different directions / Ooh, so fly high, so fly highā€
So obviously Dick has lost a lot of people important to him over the years, either because they died or DC said XYZ and Dickā€™s relationship no longer has any rights, but. This is how he would feel about that. Grudging acceptance, hope to see them again, wishing them well.Ā
Dance Monkey by Tones And I: I had to. ā€œI said, oh my god, I see you walking by / Take my hands, my dear, and look me in my eyes / Just like a monkey I've been dancing my whole life / But you just beg to see me dance just one more timeā€
Iā€™ll mention this later on, but I think that Dick projects an image a lot of the time that isnā€™t what heā€™s really feeling. This ties into that - I think at certain points in his life, he just gets exhausted and wants to take a break, but he canā€™t. He feels like everyone is counting on him, either to do this or that, or keep up this appearance. Sometimes they really are, and sometimes itā€™s pressure heā€™s putting onto himself!
Icarus by Bastille: tbh this is a song that I think applies to most if not all of the batfam, but for Dick, this is part of it that I like: ā€œYou put up your defenses when you leave / You leave because you're certain / Of who you want to beā€
I prefer the version of canon where Dick willingly decides to stop being Robin, but even in the way that he gets kicked out, this tells me that heā€™s steeling himself for whatever may come, and that heā€™s sure of his actions.Ā
Stars by Grace Potter: now THIS one is freaking sad. ā€œAll those times we looked up at the sky / Looking out so far, it felt like we could fly / And now I'm all alone in the dark of night / And the moon is shining, but I can't see the light.ā€
Again, heā€™s lost a lot of ppl!! I usually think of this song as him referring to his parents or Bruce after he ā€œdiesā€, but it could apply to anyone really. And these lines in specific just make me think that he feels lonely without whoever it is, that heā€™s not in a good place.
Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd: "Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself / Follow your heart and nothing else / And you can do this, oh baby, if you try / All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
Okay so maybe I hc that the Graysons were very much so free spirits who rubbed off a lot on Dick. But with that aside, to me this is Dick being determined to live a happy life, and knowing itā€™s going to be a struggle at times. ā€œYouā€™ll find yourselfā€ and ā€œif you tryā€ are things that I think Dick keeps close to mind. Like, maybe he doesnā€™t know everything right now, but he will. Heā€™ll figure it out. And he can get through anything if he just pushes through it.
Weight In Gold by Gallant: ā€œIā€™m pulling my weight in gold / Call me anxious, call me broke / But I canā€™t lift this on my ownā€
Iā€™ve already mentioned this but Dick has a lot of pressure on his shoulders, like all the time. And heā€™s also someone who reaches out to others, which is what these lyrics are saying. Heā€™s aware when he canā€™t handle the pressure anymore and can admit it to himself. (I donā€™t think this fits him ALL the time, I mean it just doesnā€™t, but. Sometimes.)
Tears Of A Clown by Smokey Robinson: I really fuck with the idea that Dick is, still, an entertainer. that + the pressure heā€™s under = ā€œNow if I appear to be carefree / It's only to camouflage my sadness / In order to shield my pride I've tried / To cover this hurt with a show of gladnessā€
The word ā€œcamouflageā€ stands out to me because I think sometimes the way he hides parts of who he is is to protect himself??? Dick can also be a prideful person, who might not want others to know that heā€™s been hurt by something theyā€™ve done.Ā
The Show Must Go On by Queen: relatedly,,, this whole song fits him perfectly. but to do something not related to smiling: ā€œShow must go on. / I'll face it with a grin. / I'm never giving inā€” / Ohā€”with the show. / I'll top the bill, / I'll overkill. / I have to find the will to carry on with the show.ā€Ā
This ties back to him hiding his real feelings, of course, but also it speaks to how he doesnā€™t do things by half. This makes me think about being Batman, about how he wonā€™t give in to the pressure, will push through and keep going and uphold his dadā€™s legacy as best as he can
Pumpin Blood by NONONO: ā€œIt's so magical feeling, that no one's got a hold / You're a catalyst to your own happiness you knowā€
This goes back to my thoughts that Dick has this mindset that if he keeps going, keeps putting in as much effort as he needs to, then he can get what he needs. Itā€™s also kind of those moments where Dick realizes that where he is is good, like being Robin, but itā€™s not great, and it could be great. When he decides to stop being Robin, itā€™s like heā€™s thinking, ā€œI could be happier, and if I want that, I need to do it myself.ā€
Rocketeer by Far East Movement: this song fits in a lot of spots but. ā€œHere we go, come with me / There's a world out there that we should see / Take my hand, close your eyes / With you right here, I'm a rocketeerā€
Overall imo this is a shippy song but this lyric specifically could be Dick and anyone at all -- heā€™s the kind of guy who reaches out to others, who would enjoy showing people new things. I also think the last bit kind of speaks to how he can feel better and more empowered when heā€™s not going through things aloneĀ
I Want To Break Free by Queen: ā€œBut life still goes on / I can't get used to, living without, living without / Living without you by my side / I don't want to live alone, hey / God knows, got to make it on my own / So baby can't you see / I've got to break freeā€
This goes back to a few things. For one, I feel that when he feels held back or held down, heā€™s VERY aware of it and doesnā€™t like it, and wants to have his freedom back. Another one is, considering all the people heā€™s lost, itā€™s like...he doesnā€™t want to live without them but thereā€™s no choice, he has to. And finally, I also think this is to Bruce, like heā€™s feeling like he could do and be more if he werenā€™t being restricted by Bruce
Teams & Friends, Ships, Family, & Bruce under the cut!
ā€” TEAMS & FRIENDS:
Young Volcanoes by Fall Out Boy: thereā€™s a reason why I named my fic after this lol. ā€œWhen Rome's in ruins / We are the lions / Free of the coliseums / In poisoned places / We are anti-venom / We're the beginning of the endā€
I think that Dick really does enjoy superheroing, and that heā€™s proud of himself and those he works with for being courageous, kind, and helpful to the world. In his more positive moments, this is what I feel like heā€™d think of his teams and their impacts.
Home by Daughtry: Iā€™ve always thought of this one as a batfam song but tbh I think it works better as a Titans one. ā€œWell I'm going home, / Back to the place where I belong, / And where your love has always been enough for me. / I'm not running from. / No, I think you got me all wrong. / I don't regret this life I chose for me. / But these places and these faces are getting old, / So I'm going home.ā€
The way I interpret this is like...he DOES love Bruce, he does love the batfam, but ultimately when he thinks about home he thinks of his friends. This is kind of him talking to Bruce, at least in the second half. Another reason why I put it here is that thereā€™s another lyric in the song that says, ā€œI'm going to the place where love / And feeling good don't ever cost a thing.ā€ In the batfam, as zitkaplushie said, love isnā€™t conditional or anything but it IS exhausting. It takes a toll on them. Love with the titans is just easier.
ā€” SHIPS:
Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae: Dick is bi like this song and this line describes his at-times tumultuous relationships: ā€œIt's like I'm powerful with a little bit of tender / An emotional, sexual bender / Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better / There's nothing betterā€
He takes comfort and strength from his relationships and sometimes thatā€™s good, hence the powerful/tender part! But in all his relationships, not just his romantic ones, itā€™s (sometimes) easy for people to affect him
Iā€™m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by Celtic Thunder: this fits all of his ships imo: ā€œWhen I'm lonely, well I know I'm gonna be / I'm gonna be the man who's lonely without you / And when I'm dreaming, well I know I'm gonna dream / I'm gonna dream about the time when I'm with youā€
Heā€™s just a sappy boy who is in love. That said, I donā€™t think these feelings would overtake him!
ā€” FAMILY:
Losing My Religion by R.E.M.: I read this heartbreaking fic recently that dealt with how Dick hid his feelings from EVERYONE and no one noticed anything was wrong, really, except Cass. so. ā€œEvery whisper / Of every waking hour / I'm choosing my confessions / Trying to keep an eye on you / Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool / Oh no, I've said too much / I set it upā€
Dick is more open than his siblings, but he does still hide things, especially from them. The line ā€œI'm choosing my confessions / Trying to keep an eye on youā€ makes me think of Dick trying to take care of his siblings, whichever way he can
This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) by Kishi Bashi: ā€œHome is where I want to be / Pick me up and turn me round / I feel numb - born with a weak heart / I guess I must be having fun / The less we say about it the better / Make it up as we go along / Feet on the ground / Head in the sky / It's OK, I know nothing's wrong... nothingā€
ā€œMake it up as we go along / Feet on the ground / Head in the sky / It's OK, I know nothing's wrong... nothingā€ - this reads happier than itā€™s sang but I do think it describes the more positive side of the family dynamics!Ā
Youā€™re Not There by Lukas Graham: this one is abt (all of) his parents :( ā€œI only got you in my stories / And you know I tell them right / I remember you and I, when I'm awake at night / So give it up for fallen glory / I never got to say goodbye / I wish I could ask for just a bit more timeā€
There are times where the deaths of his parents & Bruce (and Alfred) weigh heavily on him, and that everything he does is kind of continuing on where they left off, or doing something they didnā€™t have time to do. I think he would tell his kids stories about them and that he would try to be as true to them as he can be. And then of course, ā€œSo give it up for fallen glory / I never got to say goodbye / I wish I could ask for just a bit more timeā€ is kind of his relationship with his parents after they die
ā€” BRUCE:
(I gave him a separate section bc I have a lot of feels abt them okay??)
The Ballad of Dick Grayson by Crafty McVillain: there are actually a lot of songs abt Dick Grayson, but I picked this one bc of this: ā€œBroken hearts improve, but my mind's broken too / Show me how to hurt and I'll hurt them with you / I'll take on the world, I will fight for you / But tell me how to stop, cause now I'm fighting youā€
This is abt when Jason takes on Robin but I like to look at this like:
ā€œBroken hearts improve, but my mind's broken too / Show me how to hurt and I'll hurt them with youā€ - this is when Dick first comes to the Manor, and when heā€™s first becoming Robin. Heā€™s struggling and Bruce shows him a way to cope. (is it healthy? lmao)
ā€œI'll take on the world, I will fight for youā€ - this is just...any time really lol. Dick is loyal to Bruce (to an extent) and will fight alongside him, will do almost anything for him
ā€œBut tell me how to stop, cause now I'm fighting youā€ - then this is how it feels when theyā€™re broken apart for the first time, when they arenā€™t getting along and itā€™s just a change from the past few years, and Dick doesnā€™t know what to do about it
Let You Down by NF: ā€œFeels like we're on the edge right now / I wish that I could say I'm proud / I'm sorry that I let you down / Let you downā€
ā€œI'm sorry that I let you down / Let you downā€ - this could be pre-emptive, Dick kind of thinking that no matter what he does, heā€™s most likely going to let Bruce down
Like how Bruce is always that 8 year old who lost his parents, Dick is always who he was the first night he went out as Robin, desperately wanting Bruceā€™s approval
He wants the approval and hates that he does, it feels like it holds him down
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac: ā€œListen to the wind blow / Watch the sun rise / Run in the shadows / Damn your love / Damn your liesā€
When I read these lyrics, I think about Bruce and Dick when theyā€™ve been arguing, having a quiet moment (the peace after the storm, zitkaplushie said), kind of reflecting, and Dick just thinks, ā€œI want you to love me but I want you to stop lying to me.ā€ Or like, ā€œyour love comes with your lies and I donā€™t know if I can handle that [right now].ā€
Numb by Linkin Park: ā€œI've become so numb, I can't feel you there / Become so tired, so much more aware / I'm becoming this, all I want to do / Is be more like me and be less like youā€
Thereā€™s this moment in canon, before he even gives up being Robin, where heā€™s acting just like Batman, hunting down criminals with a single-minded ferocity that has his friends legit concerned for him. I canā€™t remember exactly what he felt about it when he kind of snapped out it but these lyrics remind me of that. He doesnā€™t want to be like Bruce, he doesnā€™t want to be Batman, and especially as a teenager, that last line is big. Overall it also fits when Dick IS Batman, and he feels like heā€™s kind of being swallowed by everything that it is
The Archer by Taylor Swift: okay Iā€™m sorry I canā€™t pick between these two: ā€œI've got a hundred thrown out speeches / I almost said to youā€ and ā€œAnd all of my heroes / Die all alone / Help me hold on to youā€
There are a lot of things Dick doesnā€™t say to Bruce over the years, or things that he wants to say but doesnā€™t for however long until he canā€™t hold it in anymore or itā€™s the right time or whatever. Ultimately that line just tells me that their relationship isnā€™t one with great communicating
ā€œAnd all of my heroes / Die all aloneā€ - Bruce ā€˜dyingā€™. ā€œHelp me hold on to youā€ - Batman when Dick is him. Or it could be about Dickā€™s parents, and then Dick trying to keep Bruce alive as Robin/Nightwing

Why Gothamā€™s Crown Prince of Crime Doesnā€™t Deserve a Backstory
If you havenā€™t heard, DC is releasing a new live action movie entitled The Joker, scheduled to be released on October 4th later this year. Ā The movie is supposed to take us on a journey to see the beginning of this notorious villain, and hopefully give a better understanding on why he is the way he is. Usually this is fantastic! Villains, bad guys, antagonist, whatever you call them, are always so much more interesting when you get to see the reasoning behind their actions, and after all the Joker has done, who wouldnā€™t want to know. The short answer, is me.Ā
The longer answer, (which Iā€™m about to give you,) is that honestly, no real DC or Batman fan should want to see a Joker backstory. Believe it or not, he actually has one already, and I promise you itā€™s not going to be the one you see in the movie. It simply isnā€™t that complex. If you canā€™t tell, I am a huge DC, (especially the Batfam,) fan, and if youā€™re not thatā€™s okay! Iā€™m honestly shocked if you read this far without being a DC fan. Nonetheless, Iā€™m going to be giving as much background as I possibly can to flush out my points throughout this, so you donā€™t have to possess prior knowledge. Now, I will not claim to be an expert on DC, or Batman, and especially not on the Joker himself, but I do like to think I know quite a bit. That being said, if I miss something, or get the facts wrong, feel free to refute me! A huge point of all these dumb essays Iā€™m writing is to get the conversation going! Now with all the logistics and introductions out of the way, hereā€™s why I think the Joker doesnā€™t deserve his own movie (or back story.)
The Joker is arguably the most famous of Batmanā€™s rogues. With countless reiterations, and big name stars playing him in adaptation after adaptation, itā€™s no wonder that heā€™s built up a name for himself. Not only that, but the Joker is one villain whose actions we simply canā€™t explain. We know Two-Face, AKA Harvey Dent, was seriously disfigured after a man he prosecuted threw acid on his face, destroying his lucky coin in the process. The incident made him crazy, and he wrecks havoc on the city with his destroyed coin asking people ā€œheads or tails?ā€ We know Mr. Freeze, AKA Victor Fries, became a criminal after a failed attempt to save his terminally ill wife left him with sub-zero body temperatures, forcing him to wear the cryo suit forever. His involvement with crime is him still attempting to raise funds to find a cure for her. We know one of my personal favorites, Scarecrow, AKA Dr. Jonathan Crane, an ex psychology professor at Gotham University remains obsessed with the idea of fear and phobias. He now uses the citizens of Gotham as his lab rats to test his ever evolving fear toxin. I could keep going on, (Batman has an impressive rogue gallery,) but the point is we know why all the villains do the things that they do. We donā€™t know that for the Joker, and out of all of Batmanā€™s rogues, heā€™s the one that continues to commit the most heinous crimes of all. It leaves us all asking why? Why does he do the things he does? It even leaves Batman stumped. Heck, it leaves other villians stumped!! Raā€™s Al Ghul, head of the League of Shadows, has said he doesnā€™t like working with the Joker, because heā€™s wild and unpredictable. According to this logic, the Joker should be first in line to get his own back story.
To find the reason why he shouldnā€™t we have to look pretty far back in this characterā€™s history. When the Joker first appeared in the Batman comics, he never appeared simply as ā€œthe Joker.ā€ Multiple iterations of this simplistic ā€œbackstoryā€ have been done, and can also be seen as far back as Batman: Year One, (even though the ā€œJokerā€ himself is not actually featured,) but each time the Joker always appears, it is always first as an unassuming lowlife calling himself ā€œthe Red Hood.ā€ This is so freaking important to how the Joker impacts the characters around him, and Iā€™ll tell you why soon, but I can almost guarantee you it is not going to be in the new Joker film. Not only is this Red Hood portion of the Jokerā€™s career important for reasons to be later explained, but itā€™s also important that in multiple, though not all, iterations of the Jokerā€™s introduction itā€™s Batmanā€™s fault. Not inherently of course. Batman always catches the Red Hood in some kind of factory, (a popular location is a playing card factory,) and in an attempt to catch him, the Red Hood always ends up falling into a vat of acid. This is the vat of acid that of course warps his appearance, (the white skin, green hair, and red lips,) and what ultimately drives him mad. In how he actually gets in the vat, well sometimes he jumps on purpose, because heā€™s been cornered by the Bat, sometimes he just slips, and Bruce is too late to catch him, but either way itā€™s always something that weighs on Bruce. Itā€™s another reason on top of Batmanā€™s no kill policy that he canā€™t bring himself to end the Joker. Despite paralyzing Barbra Gordon as Batgirl and murdering his son, Bruce canā€™t end the Joker, because he partly feels like the Joker is his fault. Itā€™s his mess that he made, and a mess that he has to fix.
This introduction of the Joker as the Red Hood and tying his creation to a young emerging Batman is so important to the charactersā€™ relationships to each other throughout their still changing course of comic history, that to negate it with this upcoming movie is almost like recreating a brand new villain. It is also important to note that because the Joker started out as a masked criminal, he remains a John Doe to this very day in comic history. This is crucial to not understanding the Joker, (an important aspect of his character,) because any time a new rogue pops up, Bruce tries his damndest to learn their real identity. Identifying the person beneath the horror helps him better know what angle to work at when going up against them, as well as what to look for, and realizing that violence usually isnā€™t the best answer for dealing with them. By keeping the Joker a John Doe, it keeps not only us, the audience, in the dark about trying to understand this psychotic character, but the characters in universe in the dark as well. By not knowing the Jokerā€™s past or intentions, it actually makes him scarier, because it leaves him unpredictable, and, in a sense, strips him of his humanity. By giving this character an actual identity, you destroy the mysterious unknown behind the character, make him human enough than an audience can relate to him, and almost, in a sense, strip him of what makes him a good villain in the first place.
Now my last, and what I personally view as one of the most important reasons, on why the Joker really shouldnā€™t have his own movie, is because it would destroy his tragically beautiful connection to Jason Todd. If you missed it earlier, I briefly mentioned that the Joker killed Bruceā€™s son, and that was because I planned to go more in depth now.
I need to stop referencing material that hasnā€™t been written yet. If you donā€™t know, Jason Todd is the second character to take on the mantle of Robin. Yes, there was more than one Robin. As of current day material, there are four officially recognized holders of the mantle, (sorry Stephanie,) in the order of Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Timothy Drake, and the current only blood son of Burce, Damian Wayne. Jason was taken in by Bruce off of Crime Alley, after he was found trying to steal the cars off of the Batmobile. Officially adopting him as his own and taking him under his wing, Bruce soon hands the mantle of Robin to Jason as Dick had recently left, and the two take to the streets fighting crime and punching bad guys. Unfortunately, this doesnā€™t last very long, and Jason ends up beaten nearly to death by the Joker with a crowbar in an abandoned warehouse before the Joker blows it up, seconds before Bruce arrives. Oh no. (Thereā€™s a very iconic picture of Bruce holding Jasonā€™s dead body, if you google ā€œbatman a death in the family.) This was an absolutely pivotal part to Bruceā€™s character. How Bruce acts after the death of Jason had been unseen before. He became violent and angry, and almost crossed the line he swore to himself heā€™d never cross. Jasonā€™s death is a staple in DC comic lore.
That isnā€™t the important part here though. The important part is what comes after. See, 95% of the time, if a character dies in the DC Universe, itā€™s not for very long, because comics. A couple of years later, Jason is brought back to life via the Lazarus Pit with the help of the League of Assassins. As Iā€™m writing this, it is one in the morning, and I am too tired to explain why the Shadows were involved. If youā€™re really interested, thereā€™s a crap ton of information on it on wikis and stuff, so it wonā€™t be hard to find. Anyways, Jason comes back to life really messed up and in a murderous rage. He heads back to Gotham to hunt down Bruce but this time not as Jason Todd, not as Robin, but as the Red Hood. Itā€™s perfect cinematic poetry! Yes, cinematic!! Under the Red Hood is one of the most famous comic books about Jason Toddā€™s return, as well as arguably one of the best DC animated films of all time! But thatā€™s not the point. The point is, that Jason Todd comes back from the dead, and the alias he takes up is the same alias that his killer once owned. Jason does eventually kind of come back to the ā€œgood sideā€ as a sort of anti hero, but the parallels between him and the Joker are gorgeous. Both driven mad after being thrown into a vat of mysterious liquid, except for where it was the Jokerā€™s before, itā€™s Jasonā€™s after. The idea of a young boy being beaten to death, only to come back and take the name of his killer should shake you to your core. Not only that, but imagine Bruceā€™s horror when he realizes thereā€™s another terror ripping through his city bearing the same name his arch nemesis first wore. And thatā€™s before he even realizes itā€™s his resurrected son! You canā€™t dismiss writing like that, especially when it comes to comic books! DC especially, openly admitted that its story lines take place in the multiverse, which basically means anything goes. Thatā€™s where you get stories like The Flashpoint Paradox and Crisis on Two Earths. The fact that this idea of the Red Hood being passed down from the Joker to Jason seems to be a universal constant cannot be overlooked. By giving the Joker a more in depth backstory that strays from the one that currently exists, you rip that hard work out of the authorā€™s hands, as well as destroy an impactful connection between some of the Batman Universeā€™s best and most complex characters.
This whole thing ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated, so thank you if you made it to the end. All of this being said, I stand by my opinion that out of all that characters in the DC universe, the Joker should be at the end of the line to get his own movie. Will I still end up seeing it in theatres? The juryā€™s out right now. Iā€™m a broke college kid living in New York; there are more things I want to see than a movie I donā€™t think should exist. I might watch it one day, as the assumption that all of these points wonā€™t be made in the movie is made purely off of the trailers and not the content of the film itself. If I ever do watch it, yā€™all will be the first to know, but until then this is where I stand. Donā€™t let this ruin the film for you if you planned on going to go watch it. Like stated in the beginning, these are all my own opinions, and I prefer the comics to the movies. The movies can also be seen as existing in their own realm, and in that case none of my points stand at all. Itā€™s up to you to make your own judgement.
But ask yourself this, as you sit down in the theatre with a large tub of popcorn. What do you think people will benefit from trying to see into the mind of the one of the worldā€™s most famous psychopath?

True
