In primary school in South Africa, so it might not be universal, but I feel like it is, we were taught how to keep yourself safe from kidnapping. The basics, stranger danger, you know the stuff. We were also taught how to call for help if we were being taken somewhere by an adult we didn’t know. And they told us to say that we’re not theirs, instead of just screaming for help, because other people will just think that we’re throwing a tantrum.

I thought nothing of it, of course, I was 11 at most and I knew this was how the world worked. Adults ignore children having tantrums in public. Getting yelled at in public. Getting hit in public.

I remembered this today, and I’m just struck with how monumentally fucked up it is. Sure, some can be chalked up to the bystander effect, but mate my teacher wasn’t telling us that no one would come, she was telling us no one would come if it was our parents hurting us.
