Full Circle - Webpril 01: Field Trip
summary: Peter and MJ are less interested in the field trip and a little more invested in spending time with each other. Someone, who's not spending any time with MJ at all is Tony, very much to his annoyance...

Nothing could ever even compete with the way Peter's stomach would flip when he would swing through the urban canyon that was Manhattan. Sure, Queens was awesome, it was his home after all, and there came a special sense of accomplishment with protecting one's home.
But there was absolutely nothing like swinging from one skyscraper to the next.
Now, it had been forever since Spider-Man had been seen in Manhattan. Not since that day he had climbed onto that spaceship. He hadn't gone out there patrolling for a while after that final battle. When he had put his suit back on for the first time, it had seemed more important than ever to stick to his own neighborhood.
But patrol was not why Peter was back in Manhattan.
He craned his neck, eyes narrowed as he looked up to the very top of the MetLife Building. The name pulled an uncomfortable cringe on his face. It wasn't right. Years ago, the Stark letters had stood up there, only to be replaced by the Avengers symbol after the invasion of New York.
A cold shiver ran down Peter's neck and his entire back spasmed at the sensation. Aliens. The purple grape man. He shook his head. All that was in the past.
"Hey, you okay?" MJ's hand slipped into his, hidden by their jackets from the rest of the group.
Peter forced his lips into a smile. Well, it honestly came easy whenever he looked at her. His skin broke out in goosebumps once again, in a good way though. In a way that matched the crazy rhythm, the butterflies in his stomach were dancing to.
MJ squinted up at the very top of the building herself now. "You ever been up there? When this was still Stark's?" She kept her voice low. It hadn't taken her long to figure out just how far she had to drop her voice for her words to stay just between her and Peter's enhanced-hearing.
"Long time ago," Peter nodded. "A few parties and tests in the lab before he sold it."
"Talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity, Penis."
Peter stumbled to the side as Flash push himself past them, right between him and MJ. With a heavy sigh, he stopped right in front of them, hands perched on his hip like he was supposed to be the center of attention.
"Actually, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results," Peter hisses through his teeth.
"Well, you would know, Penis, wouldn't you."
Peter's eyes flickered close in resignation, his arms tightly crossed in front of him.
"Get lost, Flash." MJ stepped back next to Peter and pushed him to the other side of the group.
"That's so sad," Flash laughed. "Look at you all whipped, Parker!"
"Just ignore him," MJ mumbled, eyes now on Mr. Harrington who was handing out lanyards to every student.
Peter nodded, eyes on his feet. It was embarrassing, always had been. It was way worse though with MJ right there to witness it.
"Dude, I'm so psyched!" Ned had been first in line to get his lanyard, excitedly waving it in Peter's face. "How close do you think they'll let us get to it? You think we get to touch it? I mean at least the... the exterior... wall... thingy?"
Some of the tension fell off Peter. His lips slowly pulled back into a genuine smile at Ned's excitement. "Not the way you're buzzing, man... you'll have to be careful not to trigger a fission reaction."
Ned's face morphed into a mask of serious consideration. "That would kind of defeat the clean energy aspect."
Peter laughed. "Exactly!"
"But..." Ned's fingers were drumming against his chin like he was preparing for his full transmission to mad-scientist. "...it would get me Tony Stark's attention though for sure!"
"Ha," Peter barked. "Yeah, but not the kind of attention you're looking for, dude."
Ned grinned at him before he stormed back to the front of the line. Peter however decided to hang back after Mr. Harrington handed the last two lanyards out to him and MJ.
They walked into the lobby side by side though MJ didn't reach for his hand again. Instead, she was craning her head along with everyone else, looking at the oversized window fronts that were projecting different things from facts about the building's layout from floor 1 to 70, the different companies renting office space as well as the event plan for the next few months. When the Tower was still owned by Stark Industries they had had information on all kinds of things that were happening in SI buildings all over the planet projected there, all the way up to the tall ceiling of the entrance area.
"You ever seen one?"
Peter glanced at her. "An arc?"
"Yeah." Her eyes were now following the lines of the interior design along the columns to the exquisite marble floor.
"I have. Not this one though," he shrugged. "They had one at the Compound upstate."
It had been where Peter had spent most of his real intern days, long after the Tower had been sold, after Toomes but before the purple grape man.
"Not this one? No parties next to the big bulb of energy then," she smirked.
Peter shook his head, glancing over at her. "Nah. Most of Tony's guests prefer the top floor to the basement."
That did get her attention. "The top floor, hm?"
She said it in a tone that made those butterflies in his stomach tumble excitedly. "Great view up there..."
"Yeah, I bet." She held his gaze for a moment before a lady from the security team ushered them through the barrier.
The students in their group were bouncing excitedly, following behind the tour guide towards the line of elevators on the far side of the entrance area.
"You know," MJ said, her tone as aloof as always. "I've always been more into architecture than energy technology. Structural engineering, that kind of thing."
Peter kept his eyes on the group, his fingertips buzzing with a new kind of excitement. "You love clean energy."
"I love to use it, but it's not like I necessarily want to build the things that generate it..."
Peter chanced another glance at her, MJ's eyes waiting to meet his. They were halfway across the room when Peter decided to hell with it, he'd just go for it. One hand on MJ's arm, he held her back for a couple of steps, letting the gap between the two of them and the group expand before he pushed her to the left, heading straight for another corridor that forked off and led to a single elevator.
They kept their heads low as they stole around the corner out of sight. The corridor was empty like it always had been even when this had been Mr. Stark's personal elevator. The doors opened right away as Peter pressed the call button and they both slipped into the waiting elevator car.
MJ shot a glance over her shoulder then grinned at Peter as the doors closed behind them. "You know, if they arrest us for this..."
"Can't arrest us for something they didn't outright ban us from, can they?"
One hand clutching her heart, MJ beamed up at him. "Peter Parker, I'm so proud. I bet they'll change the procedure from now on and move the lecture on which sections are off-limits to before they hand out these." She gave the lanyard around his neck a little flick.
Peter barked out a laugh. "Proud of how you're corrupting my pure innocent soul?"
She stepped a little closer to him. The hand that had just been resting on her heart came to lie on his cheek instead. "The circle is now complete." She leaned forward, her lips softly brushing against Peter's. "Student... master... someone becoming the other..."
The butterflies in his stomach, well... they were excited. Excited enough that a flush of heat was rising up to the very tip of his ears. His eyes were falling shut as he leaned against MJ, her lips warm and soft against his until his eyes flew back open. He leaned away from her just enough that MJ staggered forward a little, her eyes flickering open as well.
Peter studied her face, his mouth still gaping a little. "Did you just quote Star Wars to me?"
The confusion fell off her face. With an un-ladylike snort, she dipped her forehead against his shoulder. "Let's say it's your reward for the rule-breaking initiative." Her hand found his as she turned towards the elevator wall. "Let's do this." Her head spun back and forth a couple of times before Peter even caught on to what the problem was. "Wait, there's no control panel."
"Shit..." His heart sank. That tiny detail was going to ruin this for them. "No panel, it's voice-activated. Fuck, I forgot."
"So, you just say the floor and it gets you there. That's pretty cool." MJ looked up at the ceiling. "Level 70."
For a moment, they both froze in anticipation but the elevator didn't move an inch.
Peter rubbed the back of his hand across his forehead. He was starting to sweat. This had been such a dumb idea. "You need clearance for it to work," he grimaced. "Shit, sorry. That was a bit anti-climactic."
Like he was taunting the universe, the doors of the elevator opened and both of them jumped in surprise.
"What up, Parker," Flash chimed up amused. "Trespassing, are we?"
"Jesus Christ, you gotta be fucking kidding me," Peter hissed under his breath, clutching his heart.
"Dude, what are you doing?" Ned was right behind Flash and followed him into the elevator car.
"Nothing. We were just leaving."
"Eww, were you trying to sneak off to hook up with her?" Flash made a face, his upper lip curled up as he looked from Peter to MJ and back. "What a sleazy move."
A bead of sweat was running down the side of Peter's face, anxiety clawing its way under his skin.
"Don't be such a perv, Flash." MJ had her arms crossed, a dangerous glint in her eyes.
"Whatever," Flash mumbled as the doors of the elevator shut again. He craned his neck looking around the car. "How does it move?"
"It's voice activated," both Ned and MJ groaned in union.
Peter squinted at Ned. "Wait, how did you even know where we went?"
"Saw you sneak off, didn't we... floor 70," Flash called out to the ceiling. When nothing happened, he pursed his lips. "Floor 70, please?"
Ned snorted, pulling a scowl onto Flash's face. "Well, I saw you. That one," he pointed at Flash, "just stalked me."
Eyes narrowed, Flash turned on Ned. "Maybe you should work on your sneaking skills if you don't want to be followed."
Ned waved him off. "You try it, Peter!"
Excitement rang in Ned's voice, like Peter had the secret key to make this work. All it did was make his heart sink. It would have been bad enough to disappoint MJ, but Ned had just skipped out on the very thing he had been daydreaming of for years, seeing the arc, to follow them to a different adventure that Peter would not be able to deliver. Letting him down was even worse than embarrassing himself in front of Flash.
Peter pressed his eyes shut in resignation. There was no way the elevator would move. Without FRIDAY, he had no clearance. If it hadn't been for Flash and Ned, he might have made use of his web-shooters to steal up the elevator shaft with MJ... well, if it hadn't been for Flash...
Still, he owed it to Ned to at least try.
"Floor 70, please," Peter mumbled, resigned to the trip turning out to be the bust he had expected it to be.
His knees almost buckled underneath him as the elevator started to move.
"Woohoo!" Ned cheered, clapping him on the shoulder. "Dude, you did it!"
MJ grinned at him, only Flash looked a little pale around his nose. In all honesty, Peter didn't feel much better than Flash looked as the elevator was climbing higher and higher. This shouldn't have worked. He hadn't been in that building for, well 2 to 7 years, depending on who you'd ask. Tony had sold the Tower in 2016.
His head still a little fuzzy, Peter hesitated as the doors opened onto the top floor. He had almost expected them to crash some kind of function. That would have certainly explained why the elevator worked, but the entire floor was empty. It was almost eerie to see it like this when Peter had only ever experienced it lined with cocktail tables and packed with people in fine evening wear.
"Shit, this is so cool," Ned mumbled, slowly advancing towards the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked Manhattan. "You can basically look right into the Chrysler Building!"
Flash had walked up next to him and waved towards the other building like a little kid waving at all the other cars passing through the rear window of a car. "You know, my dad said he's gonna buy this whole thing one day. So, if you ever want to be invited to one of my parties..."
"Well, he's a little late for that. I doubt the Tower will go back on the market for the next few decades."
Peter's insides froze. For a moment, he was hoping that it was just an illusion, that maybe he was just having a stroke or a minor concussion from patrol he hadn't noticed before. But when he turned, there was no doubt. The man that stalked towards them, decked out in a three-piece suit, dark shades on his face, was no other than Tony Stark.
Both his friends and Flash had turned at once.
Ned looked like he was hyperventilating while his high-pitched whisper rang through the room. "Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod..."
"Oh. My. God," Peter groaned. "What are you doing here?"
Tony gasped, his face pulled into affronted shock. "Is that how you greet your favorite Avenger?"
One hand twisted in his hair, Peter could only stare at him. "I can't believe this is happening right now," he mumbled, staring straight at Tony.
"Okay, while Peter is still trying to reboot that genius brain of his." Tony pointed at Ned who's eyes were in danger of bulging out of his head. "Ted, I presume. Don't know this one," he mumbled as he pointed to Flash, but then his attention singled in on MJ. He strode right past Peter, an outstretched hand extended to her. "That means you must be MJ..."
MJ's eyes were wide, shifting from Tony over to Peter and back. "Mr. Stark..."
"Call me Tony." The smile underneath his dark-tinted glasses was blindingly bright as she shook his nano-tech hand. That in itself left Peter at a loss for words. "I wish I could say I've heard a lot about you, but that would be a lie." He jabbed his thumb over his shoulder a couple of times in Peter's direction. "You'd think he was guarding Fort Knox. Scratch that, it was easier to get in there than getting anything out of Peter when it comes to his new girlfriend."
"Oh god, please, stop talking!" Peter's face was hot, glowing like the surface of the sun. Even as he was hiding behind his hands he felt like he was illuminating the entire room.
"See, even now he's acting like this is all a big secret. Like I wouldn't notice how he rather spends his weekends in the city now than with dear old me, but I noticed and I do have his aunt's number. I mean, what does a guy have to do in order to be granted some time with their... well, intern. I only saved the universe, well, half of it. The lost half. You're welcome, by the way." He pointed at Ned and Flash as well. "You too, I guess."
Unaccustomed to Tony's rambling nature, MJ, Ned and Flash were sporting an identical look of opened-mouthed wonder, eyebrows slightly pulled together as they tried to follow Tony's chaotic monologue.
"It's not like I don't still have about a million things to teach him. Lesson number one," he turned to Peter. "You never ever stop making out with a girl to point out a Star Wars reference. I didn't think anyone would have to be taught that!"
Peter's jaw popped open. "Oh my god, you were watching us this whole time?"
He waved a hand at Peter. "FRIDAY and I were quite amused, I'm not gonna lie, but-- hey, come on!"
One hand on Tony's upper arm, Peter pushed him toward the other side of the room. While the other three were rooted on their spots in stunned silence, Peter had no such reservation.
"What in holy hell do you think you're doing?"
"Would you calm down? You're the one who's sneaking off without thinking about the 5 gazillion cameras that are installed in this building."
"And how exactly do you still have access to all these cameras, huh? Did you bribe someone to spy on my field trip?"
"Yeah, talking about that field trip, you know you could have just told me your team wanted to see the arc and I could have—"
"Don't change the subject!"
Tony tilted his head a bit to the side. "I don't usually have to bribe anyone to access what's mine."
Even though his eyes were almost entirely hidden behind the dark-tinted glasses, Peter stared at him. But no matter how long he did, Tony did seem entirely serious. "You bought back the Tower."
It wasn't a question and Tony didn't bother to pretend like it was either.
Peter's shoulder's slumped in resignation. "When did this happen?"
Tony shrugged, suddenly suspiciously quiet.
His nerves reaching an all-time high, Peter blew out a long breath. "Was this before or after my school's decathlon team happened to be invited to visit the arc?"
"Erm..." Tony pursed his lips, pretending to think. "I mean, I'm not sure about your little club's time table or anything like that so I wouldn't be entirely sure if—"
"You gotta be fucking kidding me." Peter ran both hands through his hair, at a complete loss. "What the hell is going on with you?"
"Hey, it's not like you gave me much of a choice." Tony's finger was pointed at him, his eyebrows raised above the dark rims of his glasses, like Peter was in the know of what was going on.
"I have no idea what you're even talking about."
He huffed out an annoyed little breath. "Well, why is it that May got to meet your girlfriend and I'm still wondering if you made her up or not? And even that just because Pepper let something slip that May wasn't supposed to talk about when—"
"Okay, please..." Peter's arms and hands were stretched out, voice low like he was trying to calm a skittish animal. "...please tell me, that you didn't buy back the Tower just so you could meet MJ."
Tony crossed his arms in front of himself. "Oh, don't flatter yourself, Underoos."
"Oh god..." His head was hurting.
"I did not. Pepper would skin me alive."
Peter wasn't quite sure if he meant for spending that kind of money or for meddling with Peter's love life in general. "Then why didn't you just tell me you bought it?"
His arms twitched with another shrug. "I thought it would be a fun surprise."
Peter glanced over his shoulder in the direction of his friends and Flash, but they were well out of sight. "Listen, I'm sorry I haven't made it out to the cabin that often. It's not... it's not like I don't want to come out, it's just... it's the other side of town and—"
"And there's not enough room and you don't have a desk there to work at and the basement is too small and Morgan's up at what feels like dawn and has you grumpy in the mornings and the woods are creepy and you still don't like driving and what did I miss?"
Peter's head was bowed low. He had never said those things to Tony. Not out loud. He'd thought them for sure though.
"I know things haven't been ideal and with the Compound gone, well... this will be the better option."
Peter frowned, slowly looking back up at Tony. "The better option?"
"The lab in the Tower will be big enough that we can have like three desks each, easily. It's close enough for you to drop by whenever you want or go home in time so you, you know, don't miss a date or something. If you want to stay over there's no reason your room has to share a wall with Morgan's, the kitchen, or the living room, so no early wake-ups. No creepy trees outside your window and the subway station is just around the corner."
Peter's eyes were burning. Somehow... somehow this did sound a lot like he was the reason why Tony bought back that damn building after all.
With a swift motion, Tony took off his glasses, the expression on his face soft but sincere. "I miss you, kid. I'm not happy with how things have been going since they... well, since we've moved back to the cabin full time."
Peter moved his weight from one foot to the other. It wasn't like he hadn't missed Tony. He didn't even mind the cabin all that much, things had just been, well, different.
It wasn't just about where Tony lived now, that he was married with a kid. It wasn't that he had retired Iron Man, not really.
Everything was just so different and for some reason, Tony of all people acted like nothing at all had changed between them.
"Listen, Pete, I don't mean to—" He stopped himself, lowering his voice little further. "If I overstepped and you actually... well, if you actually just want your space and you want to cut back on the erm... internship, either way, that's perfectly fine and of course, we can figure out a new routine for the... neighborhood side project to—"
"I can't believe you bought the fucking Tower for me," Peter mumbled.
Tony tilted his head to the side. The corner of his mouth was pulled back into a soft smirk. "I invented fucking time travel for you, kid."
Peter's throat was dry, but he tried to swallow the growing lump anyway. "You did that because of the purple grape. Because of what he did to like 50% of the universe."
There was a beat of silence between them. Tony held his glance, staring at him unblinkingly. "Did I?"
Peter's lips parted, but there was nothing to say, his mind simply blank. "Tony... I... I'm not sure—"
"Alright now..." Without another moment of hesitation, Tony stepped a little closer, his arms pulling Peter into a tight hug. "We won't do that now. Not here. Not today," he whispered. One of his hands, the human one, was on the back of Peter's head when he quickly pressed a kiss against his temple. "I missed you, buddy."
Peter's fingers were clinging to Tony's back, his eyes pressed shut as he tried not to think about what Tony had said. Tried not to analyze what it meant if he had really done all of it just for him.
It took a few more mumbled words from Tony until he let go. His head held low, Peter ran the sleeve of his shirt over his eyes.
"You want this?" Tony held out his glasses for him to take.
With a wet snort, Peter waved his hand away. "Yeah, 'cause that's not super obvious at all..."
Tony shrugged, the smirk on his lips deepening. Just before he pushed his glasses back onto his face, Peter caught a glimpse of the glassy brown eyes, a little red probably not unlike his own. With an overly heavy sigh, Tony wrapped an arm around Peter’s shoulder. „Come on, buddy... I think at least one of your friends is dying to see that technological marvel in my basement.”
Peter scrunched up his nose, not even trying to pull away from him. “Can you at least try not to be weird?”
“I won’t make any promises.”
"You could make up for it and let Ned touch the arc." He bit his lip, hiding a smile. "He really really wants to..."
"Why do you want to break that thing I just bought for you?"
Peter let his head drop against Tony's shoulder. "It's okay, I'll help you fix it."

This is the first time I've written something for this fandom that is *not* whump, so let me know, what you think!
I'll try to fill a bunch of these prompts, because I love running from my WIPs. Don't hate me for it ;) <3

Chapter 14
The next morning dawned with an odd surreality. I made it to work, and then through most of my pre launch day in a kind of chilly fog. I couldn’t get warm enough, despite wearing a cardigan over my blouse and a scarf that didn’t match either one. It took me a few minutes longer to process requests than it should have, and I couldn’t shake a feeling of dread.
Lauren made no contact with me whatsoever.
Nothing on my smartphone or e-mail after my text last night. Nothing in my email inbox. No interoffice note.
The silence was excruciating. Especially when the day’s Google alert hit my inbox and I saw the photos and phone videos of me and Lauren in Bryant Park. Seeing how we looked together—the passion and need, the painful longing on our faces, and the gratefulness of reconciliation—was bittersweet.
Pain twisted in my chest. Lauren.
If we couldn’t work this out, would I ever stop thinking about her and wishing we had?
I struggled to pull myself together. Mark was meeting with Lauren today. Maybe that’s why Lauren hadn’t felt pressed to contact me. Or maybe she was just really busy. I knew she had to be, considering her business calendar. And as far as I knew, we still had plans to go to the gym after work. I exhaled in a rush and told myself that things would straighten out somehow. They just had to.
It was quarter to noon when my desk phone rang. Seeing from the readout that the call was coming from reception, I sighed with disappointment and answered.
“Hey, Camila,” Megumi said cheerily. “You have a Magdalene Perez here to see you.”
“Do I?” I stared at my monitor, confused and irritated. Had the Bryant Park photos lured Magdalene out from under whatever troll bridge she called home?
Regardless of the reason, I had no interest in talking to her. “Keep her up there for me, will you? I have to take care of something first.”
“Sure. I’ll tell her to have a seat.”
I hung up, then pulled out my smartphone and scrolled through the contact list until I found the number to Lauren’s office. I dialed and was relieved when Scott answered.
“Hey, Scott. Camila Cabello.”
“Hi, Camila. Would you like to speak to miss. Jauregui? she’s in a meeting at the moment, but I can buzz her.”
“No. No, don’t bother her.”
“It’s a standing order. she won’t mind.”
It soothed me immensely to hear that. “I hate to throw this in your lap, but I have a request for you.”
“Anything you need. That’s also a standing order.” The amusement in his voice relaxed me further.
“Magdalene Perez is down here on the twentieth floor. Frankly, the only thing she and I have in common is Lauren, and that’s not a good thing. If she has something to say, it’s your boss she should be talking to. Could you please have someone escort her up?”
“Absolutely. I’ll take care of it now.”
“Thanks, Scott. I appreciate you.”
“It’s my pleasure, Camila.”
I hung up the phone and sagged back in my seat, feeling better already and proud of myself for not letting jealousy get the better of me. While I still really hated the idea of her having any of Lauren’s time, I hadn’t lied when I’d said I trusted her. I believed she had strong, deep feelings for me. I just didn’t know if they were enough to override her survival instinct.
Megumi called me again.
“Oh my God,” she said, laughing. “You should’ve seen her face when whoever that was came to get her.”
“Good.” I grinned. “I figured she was up to no good. Is she gone, then?”
“Yep.”
“Thanks.” I crossed the narrow strip of hallway to Mark’s door and poked my head in to see if he wanted me to pick him up some lunch.
He frowned, thinking about it. “No, thanks. I’ll be too nervous to eat until after the presentation with Jauregui. By then whatever you pick up will be hours old.”
“How about a protein smoothie, then? It’ll give you some easy fuel until you can eat.”
“That’d be great.” His smile lit up his dark eyes. “Something that goes good with vodka, just to get me in the mood.”
“Anything you don’t like? Any allergies?”
“Nada.”
“Okay. See you in an hour.” I knew just the place to go. The deli I had in mind was a couple blocks up and offered smoothies, salads, and a variety of made-to-order paninis with quick service.
I headed downstairs and tried not to think about Lauren’s radio silence. I’d kind of expected to hear something after the Magdalene incident. Getting no reaction had me worrying all over again. I pushed out to the street through the revolving door and scarcely paid any attention to the man who climbed out of the back of a town car at the curb until he called my name.
Turning, I found myself facing Christopher Vidal.
“Oh…Hi,” I greeted him. “How are you?”
“Better, now that I’ve seen you. You look fantastic.”
“Thanks. I can say the same to you.”
As different as he was from Lauren, he was gorgeous in his own way with his mahogany waves, grayish-green eyes, and charming smile. He was dressed in loose-fitting jeans and a cream V-neck sweater, a very sexy look for him.
“Are you here to see your sister?” I asked.
“Yes, and you.”
“Me?”
“Heading to lunch? I’ll join you and explain.”
I was briefly reminded of Lauren’s warning to stay away from Christopher, but by now I figured she trusted me. Especially with her brother.
“I’m going to a deli up the street,” I said. “If you’re game.”
“Absolutely.”
We started walking.
“What did you want to see me about?” I asked, too curious to wait.
He reached into one of two large cargo pockets of his jeans and pulled out a formal invitation in a vellum envelope. “I came to invite you to a garden party we’re having at my parents’ estate on Sunday. A mix of business and pleasure. Many of the artists signed to Vidal Records will be there. I was thinking it’d be great networking for your roommate—he’s got the right look for music video.”
I brightened. “That would be wonderful!”
Christopher grinned and passed the invite over. “And you’ll both have fun. No one throws a party like my mother.”
I glanced briefly at the envelope in my hand. Why hadn’t Lauren said anything about the event?
“If you’re wondering why Lauren didn’t tell you about it,” he said, seemingly reading my mind, “it’s because she won’t come. she never does. Even though she’s the majority shareholder in the company, I think she finds the music industry and musicians too unpredictable for his tastes. By now, you know how she is.”
Dark and intense. Powerfully magnetic and hotly sexual. Yes, I knew how she was. And she preferred to know what she was getting into at all costs.
I gestured at the deli when we reached it, and we stepped inside and got in line.
“This place smells awesome,” Christopher said, his gaze on his phone as he typed out a quick text.
“The aroma delivers on its promise, trust me.”
He smiled a delightful boyish smile that I was sure knocked most women on their asses. “My parents are really looking forward to meeting you, Camila.”
“Oh?”
“Seeing the photos of you and Lauren over the last week has been a real surprise. A good surprise,” he qualified quickly when I winced. “It’s the first time we’ve seen her really into someone she’s dating.”
I sighed, thinking she wasn’t so into me right now. Had I made a terrible mistake by leaving her alone last night?
When we reached the counter, I ordered a grilled vegetable and cheese panini with two pomegranate smoothies, asking them to hold the one with a protein shot for thirty minutes so I could eat in. Christopher ordered the same, and we managed to find a table in the crowded deli.
We talked about work, laughing over both a recent baby food commercial faux-blooper that had gone viral and some backstage anecdotes about acts Christopher had worked with. The time passed swiftly, and when we parted ways at the entrance of the Crossfire, I said good-bye with genuine affection.
I headed up to the twentieth floor, and found Mark still at his desk. He offered me a quick smile despite his air of concentration.
“If you don’t really need me,” I said, “I think it’d be good for me to sit this presentation out.”
Although he tried to hide it, I saw the lightning quick flash of relief. It didn’t offend me. Stress was stress, and my volatile relationship with Lauren was something Mark didn’t need to think about while he was working on an important account.
“You’re golden, Camila. You know that?”
I smiled and set the drink carrier down in front of him. “Drink your smoothie. It’s really good, and the protein will keep you from feeling too hungry for a little bit longer. I’ll be at my desk if you need me.”
Before I put my purse in the drawer, I texted Cary to ask if he had plans on Sunday or if he’d like to go to a Vidal Records party. Then I got back to work. I’d started organizing Mark’s files on the server, tagging them and placing them in directories to make it easier for us to assemble portfolios on the fly.
When Mark left for the meeting with Lauren, my heartbeat quickened and a clutch of anticipation tightened my stomach. I couldn’t believe my excitement just from knowing what Lauren was doing at that particular moment, and that she’d have to think of me when she saw Mark. I hoped I’d hear from her after that. My mood picked up at the thought.
For the next hour, I was restless waiting to hear how things had gone. When Mark reappeared with a big grin and a spring in his step, I stood up in my cubicle and applauded him.
He took a gallant, exaggerated bow. “Thank you, Miss Camila.”
“I’m so stoked for you!”
“Jauregui asked me to give you this.” He handed me a sealed manila envelope. “Come to my office and I’ll give you all the deets.”
The envelope had weight and rattled. I knew from touch what I’d find inside before I opened it, but still the sight of my keys sliding out and into my palm hit me hard. Gasping with a pain more intense than any I could remember, I read the accompanying note card.
Thank you, Camila. For everything.
Yours, G
A Dear Jane brush-off. It had to be. Otherwise, she would’ve given me the keys after work on the way to the gym.
There was a dull roaring in my ears. I felt dizzy. Disoriented. I was frightened and agonized. Furious.
I was also at work.
Closing my eyes and clenching my fists, I pulled myself together and fought off the driving urge to go upstairs and call Lauren a coward. she probably saw me as a threat, someone who’d come in, unwanted and uninvited, and shook up her orderly world. Someone who’d demanded more from her than just his hot body and hefty bank account.
I shut my emotions behind a glass wall where I was aware of them waiting in the background, but I was able to get through the rest of my workday. By the time I clocked out and headed downstairs, I still hadn’t heard from Lauren. I was such an emotional disaster at that point I felt only a single, sharp twinge of despair as I exited the Crossfire.
I made it to the gym. I shut my brain off and ran full-bore on the treadmill, fleeing the anguish that would hit me soon enough. I ran until sweat coursed in rivulets down my face and body, and rubber legs forced me to stop.
Feeling battered and exhausted, I hit the showers. Then I called my mother and asked her to send Clancy to the gym to pick me up for our appointment with Dr. Petersen. As I put my work clothes back on, I mustered the energy to get through that last task before I could go home and collapse on my bed.
I waited for the town car at the curb, feeling separate and apart from the city teeming around me. When Clancy pulled up and hopped out to open the back door for me, I was startled to see my mom already inside. It was early yet. I’d expected to be driven solo to the apartment she shared with Stanton and wait on her twenty minutes or so. That was our usual routine.
“Hey, Mom,” I said wearily, settling on the seat beside her.
“How could you, Camila?” She was crying into a monogrammed handkerchief, her face beautiful even while reddened and wet with tears. “Why?”
Jolted out of my torment by her misery, I frowned and asked, “What did I do now?”
The new cell phone, if she’d somehow found about it, wouldn’t trigger this much drama. And it was too soon after the fact for her to know about my breakup with Lauren.
“You told Lauren Jauregui about…what happened to you.” Her lower lip trembled with distress.
My head jerked back in shock. How could she know that? My God…Had she bugged my new place? My purse…? “What?”
“Don’t act clueless!”
“How do you know I told her?” My voice was a pained whisper. “We just talked last night.”
“she went to see Richard about it today.”
I tried to picture Stanton’s face during that conversation. I couldn’t imagine my stepfather taking it well. “Why would she do that?”
“she wanted to know what’s been done to prevent information leaks. And she wanted to know where Nathan is—” She sobbed. “she wanted to know everything.”
My breath hissed out between my teeth. I wasn’t sure what Lauren’s motivation was, but the possibility that she’d dumped me over Nathan and was now making sure that she was safe from scandal hurt worse than anything. I twisted in pain, my spine arching away from the seatback. I’d thought it was her past that drove a wedge between us, but it made more sense that it was mine.
For once I was grateful for my mother’s self-absorption, which kept her from seeing how devastated I was.
“she had a right to know,” I managed in a voice so raw it sounded nothing like my own. “And she has a right to try and protect himself from any blowback.”
“You’ve never told any of your other boyfriends.”
“I’ve never dated anyone who makes national headlines by sneezing, either.” I stared out the car window at the traffic that boxed us in. “Lauren Jauregui and Cross Industries are global news, Mother. she’s light-years away from the guys I dated in college.”
She spoke more, but I didn’t hear her. I shut down for self-protection, cutting off the reality that was suddenly too painful to be endured.
Dr. Petersen’s office was exactly as I remembered. Decorated in soothing neutrals, it was both professional and comfortable. Dr. Petersen was the same—a handsome man with gray hair and gentle, intelligent blue eyes.
He welcomed us into his office with a wide smile, commenting on how lovely my mother looked and how like her I was. He said he was happy to see me again and that I looked well, but I could tell he spoke for my mother’s benefit. He was too trained an observer to miss the raging emotions I suppressed.
“So,” he began, settling into his chair across from the sofa my mother and I sat on. “What brings you both in today?”
I told him about the way my mom had been tracking my movements via my cell phone signal and how violated I felt. Mom told him about my interest in Krav Maga and how she took it as a sign that I wasn’t feeling safe. I told him about how they’d pretty much taken over Parker’s studio, which made me feel suffocated and claustrophobic. She told him I’d betrayed her trust by divulging deeply personal matters to strangers, which made her feel naked and painfully exposed.
Through it all, Dr. Petersen listened attentively, took notes and spoke rarely, until we’d purged everything.
Once we’d quieted, he asked, “Sinuhe, why didn’t you tell me about tracking Camila’s cell phone?”
The angle of her chin altered, a familiar defensive posture. “I didn’t see anything wrong with it. Many parents track their children through their cell phones.”
“Underage children,” I shot back. “I’m an adult. My personal time is exactly that.”
“If you were to envision yourself in her place, Sinuhe,” Dr. Petersen interjected, “would it be possible that you might feel as she does? What if you discovered someone was monitoring your movements without your knowledge or permission?”
“Not if the someone was my mother and I knew it gave her peace of mind,” she argued.
“And have you considered how your actions affect Camila’s peace of mind?” he queried gently. “Your need to protect her is understandable, but you should discuss the steps you wish to take openly with her. It’s important to gain her input—and expect cooperation only when she chooses to give it. You have to honor her prerogative to set limits that may not be as broad as you’d like them to be.”
My mother sputtered indignantly.
“Camila needs her boundaries, Sinuhe,” he continued, “and a sense of control over her own life. Those things were taken from her for a long time and we have to respect her right to establish them now in the manner that best suits her.”
“Oh.” My mother twisted her handkerchief around her fingers. “I hadn’t thought of it that way.”
I reached out for my mother’s hand when her lower lip trembled violently. “Nothing could’ve stopped me from talking to Lauren about my past. But I could have forewarned you. I’m sorry I didn’t think of it.”
“You’re much stronger than I ever was,” my mother said, “but I can’t help worrying.”
“My suggestion,” Dr. Petersen said, “would be for you to take some time, Sinuhe, and really think about what sorts of events and situations cause you anxiety. Then write them down.”
My mother nodded.
“When you have what will surely not be an exhaustive list but a strong start,” he went on, “you can sit down with Camila and discuss strategies for addressing those concerns—strategies you can both live with comfortably. For example, if not hearing from Camila for a few days troubles you, perhaps a text message or an e-mail will alleviate that.”
“Okay.”
“If you like, we can go over the list together.”
The back-and-forth between the two made me want to scream. It was insult to injury. I hadn’t expected Dr. Petersen to smack some sense into my mom, but I’d hoped he would at least take a harder line—God knew someone needed to, someone whose authority she respected.
When the hour ended and we were on our way out, I asked my mom to wait a moment so I could ask Dr. Petersen one last personal and private question.
“Yes, Camila?” He stood in front of me, looking infinitely patient and wise.
“I just wondered…” I paused, needing to swallow past a lump in my throat. “Is it possible for two abuse survivors to have a functional romantic relationship?”
“Absolutely.” His immediate, unequivocal answer forced the trapped air from my lungs.
I shook his hand. “Thank you.”
When I got home, I unlocked my door with the keys Lauren had returned to me and I went straight to my room, offering a lame wave to Cary, who was practicing yoga in the living room to a DVD.
I stripped off my clothes as I crossed the distance from my closed bedroom door to the bed, finally crawling between the cool sheets in just my underwear. I hugged a pillow and closed my eyes, so tired and drained I had nothing left.
The door opened at my back and a moment later Cary sat beside me.
He brushed my hair back from my tear-streaked face. “What’s the matter, baby girl?”
“I got kicked to the curb today. Courtesy of a fucking note card.”
He sighed. “You know the drill, Camila. she’s going to keep pushing you away, because she’s expecting you to fail her like everyone else has.”
“And I keep proving her right.” I recognized myself in the description Cary had just given. I ran when the going got tough, because I was so sure it was all going to end badly. The only control I had was to be the one who left, instead of the one who was left behind.
“Because you’re fighting to protect your own recovery.” He lay down and spooned against my back, wrapping one leanly muscular arm around me and tucking me tight against him.
I snuggled into the physical affection I hadn’t realized I needed. “she might’ve dumped me because of my past, not her.”
“If that’s true, it’s good it’s over. But I think you two will find each other eventually. At least I’m hoping you will.” His sigh was soft on my neck. “I want there to be happily-ever-afters for the fucked-up crowd. Show me the way, Camila honey. Make me believe.”

Disco Elysium or: How I learned to Stop Wallowing and Love the Game
I will now review a videogame. No real spoilers. Just very vague descriptions below.
My writing this is uncharacteristic of me. I find most writing surrounding the video game industry to be repugnant. The industry (including the media surrounding that industry) relies upon the subsumption of subcultures on the fringe into the very center of the infernal machine where the dedicated and nostalgic nature of its fanbase can be exploited for capital. It’s the same process that produces Iron Man Funko Pops. Call me a jaded and pretentious pseudointellectual poseur, but in the case of Marvel the idea that this fucking billion dollar franchise with the biggest actors in the world somehow retains this guise of this ‘geek’ subculture is disturbing to me.
(If you have played the game Disco Elysium, then you can probably already see part of why I enjoy it so goddamn much.)
I don’t mean we should gatekeep. My point is the media attached to these quote-geek-unquote industries wants to milk the same cash cow (e.g. 10 AWESOME THINGS IN THE LAST OF US 2!) Coming from an academic environment of criticism, I crave at least the appearance of an honest and thorough critique of art. In my experience, you really need to go past the surface to find any reliable ‘takes’ on contemporary videogames. That being said, there’s a lot of good work being done in the form of video essays.
In any case, I play videogames relatively often. Competitive shooters, mostly. But I suffer no story in videogames. Why would I? I read the most *genius* pieces of literature in the English language. I’m too *good* for that. So when I heard all the buzz about Disco Elysium last fall, it fell on deaf ears. Detectives? Disco? Isometry? Story-heavy. Ugh. I’m interested in none of that. But about a week ago, a friend of mine bought the game. Unlike me, he is a real adult with a real job so it was just a whim on his part, I believe. I looked at the game and, with Steam’s lax refund policy in mind, I bought it. In the past week I have put approximately thirty hours into this game. This review is a way for me to explore my own thoughts surrounding the game, thoughts that I didn’t include in my steam review (See below.)
Tumblr media
So it was devastating, sure. And this devastation was somehow positive. One thing that I would like to make clear about me talking about this game is that it is fucking useless. Disco Elysium possesses that quality that exists in all great art; it is irreducible. When I try to explain this game to my friends, I find that my words fail to describe what’s so great about the game. Let me give you the elevator review I’ve come up with. *This game has allowed me to explore the breadth of human experience*. It’s an absolutely insane thing to say about a game. The writing, the art style, the story, the world, the RPG gameplay, they all work together to create a kind of experience that I have never encountered in a piece of art before aside from those few, fleeting moments when you feel as though you truly *get* an encyclopedic novel you’re reading (and in my case I usually don’t get it.)
I will not delve too deeply into the mechanics of the game. There are probably plenty of articles and videos that describe the game already. Put simply, the game is about choices. You can choose to solve the murder however you want. You can say absolutely batshit things to people. You can say mildly bemusing things. You can speak apocalyptic prophesies, espouse communism, conservatism, Moralism. race science.. There are moments when you genuinely *feel* like you can say anything, which is quite a feat when you really only have a few dialogue options at any given moment.
As you’ve noticed, this is not a review of the videogame. Playing this game after a tough breakup was sort of earth-shattering. I mean, not only am I navigating through a strange virtual world with its own history and culture and cosmological makeup, I’m diegetically grieving over being left by my *divinely* beautiful ex while I, the player, undergo a similar process and find similar coping mechanisms. Playing this game was like knowing the funniest clown in the world, a clown so funny that you thank him when he occasionally punches you in the chest to make you *feel things*.
The plan wasn’t to make a character whose qualities reflected my own. I just wanted to play the game. I wanted to win. It just so happened that because *I* was the one playing the game, the character essentially turned into me. It doesn’t help that I, too, have had my issues with alcohol, drugs, commitment, and mental health (in no particular order). The character ended up becoming *me* in a way that I’d never experienced before. I faced ethical dilemmas. My ideology was shaken. This game achieves unbelievable mimesis.
Here’s the wild thing: this game has changed me. I feel like a thirteen-year-old white boy who just watched The Boondock Saints and got a pretty okay over-the-pants handjob at the same time. I’m thinking about my life in terms of choices. The game enforces a kind of perspective of the world that highlights its contingency and the permanence of choices. You can, of course, save your progress in the game and reload whenever, but I found myself just sort of riding out the bad choices I made unless they were game-ruiningly catastrophic. (E.g. I had a “thought” equipped that made me fail every unrepeatable *red* check during a pivotal firefight; it was a hilarious disaster. We were essentially mowed down.) I stood by most of my bad choices. After all, I made the choice using the information I had at the time.
I am not good at this game. I absolutely bungled the investigation. I was just a pawn for forces far greater than myself. Seven people died, and I know that I could’ve saved a few of those people, if not all of them. I think about it sometimes. I think about what I could have done, how I could have gone deeper to find out what’s *really* going on, how I could take control of the investigation rather than be taken control of. Maybe I’ll play the game through again, but the first playthrough is kind of magical if you know absolutely nothing about the game like I did. If not for an absolute deus ex machina at the end, I would have been taken to the madhouse. It would have been an unbelievable failure.
During that deus ex machina moment, by the way, a goddamn tear rolled down my cheek. Yeah, I’m in a rough place, personally. But I don’t *cry* over characters in art. They’re not real. But damn if that changed.  I tell you it’s changed *me*. I care more for characters. I know they’re not real but they represent something that I can relate to, no matter who they are. This game has made me think about empathy more. Maybe it’s because I dumped all my points in the emotional skills. Maybe I’d be more violent if I rolled with the physical skills. Maybe I’d feel like a superstar if that’s what I chose to pursue in the game. Disco Elysium feels open-ended enough that if you sign up for the story, the aesthetic, and the investigation itself, then you can get whatever you want out of the experience. The game, again, achieves incredible mimesis.
The mimesis is so convincing in Disco Elysium that it feels as open-ended as reality, with one caveat: you *know* it's a game. You, as a player, know that the experience of Disco Elysium is a designed one, that it was created as a sort of origami structure, that there is narrative and, god help us, *meaning*. What this game-knowledge afforded me during my playthrough was the constant sensation of synchronicity. I found myself saying “I don’t know how this element will fold into the grand structure of the game, and it almost seems impossible that it should become part of the investigation narrative.” But because I know it’s a game, I am graced with the confidence of the highly religious. Everything will come together in the end.
This is not a review for a videogame. This is a confession. I am deeply flawed and I want to change that. My worldview has been shaken because of a videogame. I don’t want to be that kind of animal anymore.
I’m trying to empower myself, to become more aware that my choices do indeed matter, have always mattered. I’m trying to be more pragmatic, to consider the things I want to do in terms of their result rather than the momentary pleasure I will derive from doing them. Now *that’s* a change for me.
I’m trying to be more empathetic, more willing to imagine the perspectives of others.
I am trying to give the world around me the benefit of the doubt. It is easy for me to think of the world as a random coincidence of matter, but if you look at the world with totality in mind everything seems to take on this Spinozan glow of divinity. The human mind is a meaning-making machine, I think. If I look at the world as fundamentally devoid of meaning, then that is still meaning. It is nihil-ism. It’s still an -ism. But if I ascribe to the world a kind of glowing potential, as though meaning were to be found in every speck of matter, then I feel invited to participate in this massive dance that we’re all a part of.
I’m trying to be more adventurous, because beneath the surface of things there seems to be a vast network of relationships, causation, possibility and, god help me, *story*. Or maybe it’s not beneath the surface of things, maybe there is no Deleuzian schizophrenic depth beneath the surface, perhaps the world is a homogenous and ever-developing surface upon which I constellate meaning and, thereby, create it. I’m trying to create a story for myself that will hold a candle to my experience playing Disco Elysium. I didn’t ask for this; it was just what I needed. It was, in a word, unforgettable.

The Very Best Places to Move to in Cyprus as a Deportee
Tumblr media
When the mercury drops at home it can be appealing to think of exactly how unwinding a life abroad in the sunshine could be. Cyprus is just one of those places that shows up time after time as a favorite place for Britons when taking into consideration deportee life and happily puts on the title of having the hottest climate in the European Union.
Throughout history, this pleasant island has actually been 'calculated', with every king as well as leader wanting to stake an insurance claim to the seas and also lands in the Levant region of the Eastern Mediterranean. So if you're thinking about relocating to Cyprus, you're in great firm. An Abundant Culture

Life in The Funding
Naturally, one point to bear in mind when transferring to Cyprus is that this is an island split in two. The south is Greek Cypriot, while the north is Turkish Cypriot, attacked by Turkey in 1975 seemingly to secure its Turkish population complying with a coup d'etat on the island.
In the funding, Nicosia-- home to 240,000 of the 1.2million-strong populace-- signifies this island's split condition. Head to a high look-out factor and you'll see the Eco-friendly Line separating north from south as well as safeguarded by soldiers. It has the sorry title of the world's last divided funding.
Despite its location-- or probably due to it-- Nicosia is the financial and working hub of the island and a main gathering point for every person as well as every little thing. It has been passed from realm to realm for many years and also makes a wonderful place to live.
Gothic cathedrals grow from Islamic buildings, themselves restored over the top of Venetian, English, French and also Genoese previous glories. Buildings like the St Sophia Sanctuary, currently called the Selimiye Mosque, are a good example.
A walk around the city will certainly disclose the medieval Venetian wall surfaces, 18th-century aqueducts and also the Famagusta Gateway, built in 1567 by the Republic of Venice. Nicosia might be a walled medieval town, but there is lots of life as well as modernity in this city, such as the Zaha Hadid-designed park. You do not have the coastline on your front door, but it's only a 50km repel on the weekend.
When it comes to choosing somewhere to reside in Cyprus, Nicosia is usually the leading area for those that are aiming to function as well as incorporate, while much of the expat favourites are on the south of the island. The north is still very dependent on Turkey for help, especially as it is not recognised worldwide as a sovereign state so struggles to create industry similarly as the south.
On The Coastline
Limassol, on the south of the island, is an additional historic and financial hub, house to the ancient city of Amathus, the Kourion Greco-Roman theater as well as the medieval 13th-century Kolossi Castle. The city is just one of the liveliest on the island, as well as locations like the Limassol Marina and also the Fasouri Watermania Park are some of one of the most prominent tourist locations, implying those that reside in the seaside city can delight in bustling summers, while still having the location to themselves in the mild winters months. With choosing the right Property for sale in Cyprus of night life and also a beautiful boardwalk close by the smooth, modern-day marina to enjoy the pleasant climate, it is no surprise Limassol has long been elected a favorite place to obey British expats, it easily combines ancient and also contemporary.
An additional most likely city destination for those thinking of transferring to Cyprus is Larnaca, the 3rd largest city in Cyprus, and also where you'll find Larnaca International Airport. Life below is most definitely a little slower than Nicosia as well as Limassol, however equally historical as well as pretty.
The Finikoudes coastline and also boardwalk is just one of the nicest locations in Larnaca, perfect for warm strolls with cozy waters and tidy sands. Larnaca uses deportees a little bit even more of a standard speed of life, far from the more energetic locations of the island, as well as its tourism is a little lower, meaning you can appreciate its quaint beauties without having to share them with too many people.Named a 2017 European City of Culture, the little harbour city of Paphos has long been a British favourite for holiday homes as well as is frequently voted the very best area to live for deportees. It's not difficult to see why, right here you'll locate one of the Mediterranean's most attractive harbours, a tangle of roads in the old town with good-looking colonial structures and genuine Cypriot life happening. There is the Paphos Archaeological Park, just outside of community with its awesome sea views. The rate of life here is slower, yet with a genuine local feeling and also stunning borders.
Off The Beaten Track
Naturally, those deportees who aren't always searching for work possibilities or the buzz of city life, commonly think about an extra country escape. There are picture-perfect villages with stone homes, or perhaps a lot more singular country residential properties, while others decide to resolve right on the shore. The wonderful thing about Cyprus is that absolutely nothing is ever too away, so you can take pleasure in the city, knowing you can run away to the coastline or countryside, or the other way around. If you're thinking of transferring to Cyprus, initially you need to think of what you desire from a step; whether it's tranquil as well as beach-side relaxation (possibly Paphos is for you), historical streets as well as excellent purchasing (take into consideration Nicosia), or maybe you are searching for fun and also amazing night-life alternatives (consider Limassol).
An island where old culture is still commemorated, there is still a focus on family and also a fascination with great food, not to mention a welcoming atmosphere, it is no surprise 70,000 Britons like to call Cyprus residence.
If you're considering moving to Cyprus, you're in good company. From hunter-gatherer societies 12,000 years ago to Alexander the Great, Richard the Lionheart and also the British Realm, all have desired a piece of this beautiful island.
In the funding, Nicosia-- residence to 240,000 of the 1.2million-strong population-- is a sign of this island's split standing. Larnaca supplies deportees a little bit more of a conventional pace of life, away from the extra energetic areas of the island, as well as its tourism is somewhat lower, implying you can appreciate its old-world appeals without having to share them with as well several people.Named a 2017 European City of Society, the little harbour city of Paphos has long been a British favourite for holiday houses as well as is regularly elected the ideal place to live for deportees. collaborating using ilisters apartments for sale paphos concerning Cyprus is that absolutely nothing is ever before as well much away, so you can take pleasure in the city, understanding you can escape to the coastline or countryside, or vice versa.

Conversation
Libby Jansing on self-care, snickerdoodles, and divinity.
H: what are you wearing?
L: I’m wearing a striped rainbow sweater and this corduroy jumper thing my aunt got me for Christmas like two years ago. it was hers when she was younger and she gave it to me. she’s like “I saw it and I thought of you!” she’s my godmother.
H: my nanny texted me this morning when I was at cece’s, this picture of these overalls she saw on a facebook ad. she was like “these look like you”, they had like flowers all up and down.
L: that’s so sweet, I love that! I call my grandma nanny too.
H: oh yeah! I feel like we’ve talked about that before.
L: yeah, I love when other people call their grandma, nanny. It’s so sweet. my grandpa who I didn’t really know—he died when I was little—but we called him poppy.
H: dude! I call my grandpa pops, but then on my other side of my family, my dads mom is called grandy. which, she chose that name for herself. she started enforcing it when I was in the womb. and my grandpa, he died when I was little too, but we called him pawpaw.
L: that’s really sweet, I love that. my catholic grandparents were just grandma and grandpa which is like such catholic shit.
H: basic, straightforward, down to business. No frills whatsoever.
L: exactly!
H: so, describe your idea of self-care.
L: I think for me it shifts and changes depending on how I’m feeling. I’ve been really focusing on astrology lately and I think the transits really effect how I interact and take care of myself. It’s been a lot of trying to start new things which I think is because of aries season. starting new things—not even necessarily finishing them—but just starting them is making me feel good. and honestly still just like taking baths every day.
H: yeah, that’s so nice. what kind of new things have you been starting? like creative projects?
L: I’ve started a few things. I’m still working on five commissions that I have left which are projects I need to prioritize since you know they’re for people. I’ve been paid for them so I have to finish them, but I’m getting close on all of them which is good. I purchased a printer so I can print off the shipping labels.
H: hell yeah, that’s great!
L: also my friend Kelly and I are starting a podcast!
H: (excited gasp)
L: it’s an astrology podcast. we also talk about politics, we just have the best interactive mercury signs with one another. I have a gemini mercury and hers is in aries so we just talk talk talk and can’t stop. I’m always thinking constantly but I don’t always take note, I’m better at communicating my ideas out loud rather than writing them out so I’m excited to be communicating on a level like that.
H: yes! that’s so good.
L: yeah, so that’s been fun. I’ve been baking a lot too which I don’t really do usually.
H: amazing. what have you made?
L: I made snickerdoodles the other day just because I had those ingredients in the apartment and like.. they were so good! I felt like I did a really good job.
H: I love snickerdoodle ice cream.
L: snickerdoodles I think are my favorite cookies. I love cinnamon.
H: same! what is something that brings you joy lately?
L: I watch the British baking show a lot, and that brings me joy.
H: I love that show. I need to catch up on it, I know they switched out some of the hosts right? Like Mary Berry isn’t on it anymore.
L: I don’t think anyone’s the same. I haven’t watched the new seasons at all. like the two hosts—I don’t know anyone’s name on it at all—they’re introduced like every episode and I can never remember any names except for Mary Berry. her name is so easy. I know most of them are gone now though.
H: the old ones are nostalgic.
L: it totally does feel like that.
H: okay, what do you miss?
L: I miss thrifting honestly. going to antique stores and just looking at things. I don’t miss buying things, I miss browsing. also I really miss my friends.
H: I feel you. I miss both of those things a lot too.
L: yeah! I miss flea markets.
H: I’ve been so tired of all my clothes too which is so inconvenient! I’m trying to think what I can do at home to alter my clothes.
L: same! I don’t want to online shop for anything that isn’t essential either cause I just feel like that’s shitty.
H: I know. I feel like it’s a little bit irresponsible in a lot of cases.
L: yeah same. I’m also excited to get back in the studio. tommy and I are sharing that studio in Brighton.
H: yeah! the space looks great!
L: it’s part of sew valley. it isn’t really working right now, like their production isn’t going right now. I’m just excited to make clothes but I think I’m going to start crocheting clothes as well.
H: yeah that’s awesome you can just make new shit! It’s a good skill.
what do you not miss?
L: I do not miss working at all. honestly I’ve needed to go to therapy less during this time.
H: (laughing)
L: it’s fucked up. literally that’s how bad capitalism is. like, it’s shitty both ways because I’m not making any money right now and unemployment is really hard to get for whatever reason, but I’m so happy to not be at a restaurant every day. Honestly I think I’ve decided to go to a state school and get my masters in something. I’m thinking about going back to school—that’s what this time is giving me.
H: that’s awesome!
L: yeah.
H: the restaurant industry is so crazy sometimes because it feels like every single day just piles on and you don’t really have time to consider shit like that.
L: not at all.
H: you’re just so spent all the time.
L: yeah I was constantly tired. It was really hard to make things during that time too, I found myself very mentally exhausted all the time. I don’t have the temperament or personality to be a host. I can fake being sweet in that position but it’s hard to be on all the time.
H: yeah, I think that’s the hardest part about it. If you’re having an off day talking to the people who don’t care about you and don’t show you respect is really difficult.
L: yes. that’s exactly it. there’s always people that you meet who are nice, but even people who are kind to you and nice—it can still be exhausting after a while.
H: yeah it’s just so high volume.
L: yes!
H: what is something beautiful you’ve seen lately?
L: there’s a german sheperd that lives above me and this dog is so beautiful. sometimes it sounds like there’s a horse above me (laughing) but this dog is so pretty. I love seeing him every day.
H: that’s beautiful, I love that. that’s a great answer to that question.
describe your concept of divinity.
L: that is such an intense question but I love it. I had a super religious upbringing, going to a catholic school all my life and like even my preschool was Christian. I think I went to one year of public school when I was five. it was a young fives program and it was like… fucking amazing. the public school systems are amazing, we were like planting things in the ground. I think because of that it really engrained in me a need for ritual. catholics are very ritualistic. It’s a very clear stepping stone to me to get into my own spirituality. when I realized, you know—christianity isn’t it. It’s not great. It’s not for me and I don’t think it’s like, net good for the world. I always felt spiritual and connected whether it’s like to other people or the divinity in each other. I feel like everyone has divinity within themselves and it’s just about accessing it and respecting it. I feel like I more so practice it than I know what it is. you know what I mean?
H: totally, it’s a feeling.
L: yeah absolutely. I don’t know what it is. astrology is super important to my spiritual practice and tarot. I don’t know how it works, but it works you know? I don’t understand how these things happen. I love mystery and the mystical. I would be so bummed if I didn’t have that in my life. things that you can’t explain—I think that to me is what divinity is. I see it around me all the time.
H: thank you so much, that was awesome to hear.
L: I love that question. what is it for you, harris?
H: oh man! now I’m being interviewed. I am coming from a similar mind as you. I was not raised religious. I have people in my family like my grandparents are christians but even then we only went to church when I was really little so it didn’t have like a lasting effect on me. in terms of religion I was afraid that it might be real just because of hell, and then I rejected that pretty early once I started to like feel …gay. I was like “this doesn’t add up.”
L: yeah! harris, when I was little and I was like “oh… girls are pretty” probably around eight or something—my reaction was like “I’m going to be a nun when I’m older so I don’t have to think about sex” genuinely! That was my reaction.
H: wow!
L: I feel like I didn’t reject it, I went extreme. that’s like the guilt that comes especially with catholicism, it’s a religion built on guilt. it’s like even if you are worthy of god you’re still a sinner, it’s all built on guilt and like how shit you are as a person. it’s not great, you know? but you started to reject it after you were feeling gay?
H: yeah I stopped putting any stock into religion at all. but I have always been very spiritual as well. I’ve always felt like similar to you, a feeling of connection with my surroundings and things I can’t see or explain. I love astrology because it’s this weird cosmic thing that is just so fun to talk and learn about and somehow rings true. I don’t understand how it’s so accurate but it is. I love the moon (laughing) I love—not to get all over here with it—
L: get over there with it!
H: (laughing) I think poetry is a part of it for me as well, just conjuring things up that feel like they come from somewhere else. there are things that are impossible to understand which is crazy and cool.
L: yeah, I love that. that’s beautiful. thank you harris.
H: yes, thank you!
the next question, what’s your favorite body part?
L: oh my god my favorite body part. I feel like hands are my favorite utility. I’m so grateful for my hands, I think about it all the time. the cutest part for me though is definitely noses. everyone has a good nose.
H: I agree, I agree.
L: it’s such a fixation for people, like an insecurity but I literally see everyone’s nose and I’m like “that’s a cute nose.”
H: yeah! there’s no such thing as a bad nose.
L: no, noses are amazing, I love them. and I feel like smell is such an interesting sense too. it’s so connected with taste. do you remember that chef’s table episode where the chef has cancer on his tongue and he loses the ability to taste and smell the food?
H: yeah!
L: I think about that a lot. smell and taste is so important especially if your life is devoted to it. it does bring a different aspect of joy to life. the external part of it but its function too.
H: yeah, its amazing that he was able to continue and find new ways of creating with food.
L: yeah, so cool!
H: tell me something stupid.
L: (laughing) I could say so many things. because I’m in this new space, this new apartment, my body hasn’t figured out how to be in it yet. I live very much from the shoulders up.
H: YES!
L: and like, from shoulders down we don’t really know what’s happening. it’s a mind of its own. I’m very clumsy. my dad used to call me a bull in a china shop when I was growing up, and that rings true! I’m genuinely not aware of my body. I feel like that’s the gemini stellium, I’m very in the brain and not where the body is. I keep hitting this part of my leg in the same spot every single day and I have this giant bruise. It’s getting bigger because I keep hitting it. It’s in the bathroom, the toilet is just in this location that my body hasn’t gotten adjusted to. it’s the outside of my knee.
H: fuck. you’re body just isn’t with it yet.
L: it usually isn’t with it and in this moment it just has no idea.
H: I hope you start adjusting soon!
L: me too Harris! I think I will. tommy said it’s probably just a matter of time.
H: (laughing) I don’t love that for you but I love it.
L: it’s one of those things I’ll cry in frustration about and then laugh over how silly that is.
H: do you have any confessions to make?
L: (laughing) forgive me harris for I have sinned! confessions, oh my god. I’m transported. probably, you know! I hear my neighbor groaning and moaning a lot and I feel like I’m being too hard on him, you know what I mean? I feel like he’s just a person but my brain is taking me to this place. I feel like he’s an incel that’s going to kill me, and I know that’s irrational. he’s probably just living his life. I have to be careful for myself. I feel like I judge people too hard from a safety standpoint sometimes but I think that’s also without a basis.
Madison: I feel like you’re really good at meeting people though and then changing it. you’re good at not letting your initial judgements cloud when you meet someone.
L: thank you so much Madison, that makes me feel a lot better. I feel like my scorpio rising energy makes me not trust people right away but I try to not let that influence too much. sometimes you have to listen to your intuition but I don’t want it to get in the way of me treating people like people.
H: totally! I also feel like that instinct comes from a place of being a person in the world who is vulnerable. the hesitation is understandable. it’s not necessarily bad.
L: I’m okay having it and I should listen to myself when I’m really feeling something but I don’t want it to get in the way of treating people with humanity, that’s my fear with it. I want to be actively aware of that portion in my brain that jumps there immediately.
H: that’s a practice everybody should be doing definitely.
L: yes, in multiple ways.
H: to bring it to a close I’m going to ask you a series of one word questions.
wanting?
L: food. I’m hungry.
H: wishing?
L: I’m always wishing. fantasy, that’s me. I’m always a little bit in the clouds sometimes.
H: advice?
L: If you have any I’ll take it.
H: I’ll get back to you on that.
L: anyone who feels like they have advice to give me, I’m open. I’m usually not for unsolicited advice but I’m asking for it right now.
H: allowing?
L: myself and others to make more mistakes and not punish them for it. holding people accountable but allowing people to grow and make mistakes.
H: doing?
L: doing crafts! yeah. that’s my answer.

“Refresh it.” Jeongin pressed the button. “It should be any second.”
“I’ve refreshed it a thousand times. Let’s give it a second.” Changbin shoved his hand away.
“What are you weirdos doing?” Tori asked, walking into the room and finding nine boys crowded around Chan’s laptop. “And why was I not included?”
“Because you said the reveal of your collab with Zoey is dropping today at noon.” Felix explained.
“And you’ve seen the pictures already.” Hyunjin reminded her.
“But you wouldn’t show us.” Seungmin said.
“Which was rude.” Jisung added.
“So we’re waiting for it.” Minho finished.
She shook her head. “Let me know when it goes up.”
Tori grabbed a bottle of orange juice from the fridge. She might seem calm on the outside, but she was absolutely terrified. Both her and Zoey had liked the final decision on the album cover, but other than managers, they were the only ones who’d seen it. She was honestly trying to forget what fans might think, but if her boys didn’t like it, then she didn’t know what she would do.
“It’s up!” Woojin exclaimed. “Click it! Click it!”
“I am clicking it!” Changbin protested.
Tori held her breath and listened to the living room fall silent for a moment. She was certain that her heart had stopped beating.
“Holy crap.” Hyunjin breathed.
“Tori...”Chan gasped.
“You look hot!” Felix called.
She peeked nervously into the room. “You like it?”
“Like it?” Woojin shook his head. “We love it!”
“You look so good, Tor. And the song is called Wow Thing?”
She nodded. “Yeah, there’s three songs on the album but the other two are just intro and outro.”
“Who styled you?” Minho demanded. “You never look that good for our comebacks. Clearly you don’t love us enough, if you’re not using this skill to promote our group.”
“My little baby, all grown up.” Chan wiped away a fake tear. “But seriously, Tori, you look amazing. And I can’t wait to hear the song.”
“Noona, are you going to promote the song? Will it be in this outfit? Please say yes!”
Tori shrugged. “It hasn’t been decided yet. They wanted to see the reaction to the announcement first.”
“Most important question: are there more pictures of Zoey in that outfit?” Jisung had not taken his eyes off the screen.
Woojin swatted him lightly in the back of the head. “Focus on our teammate, please.”
“I am!” He insisted. “Tori, you look great. White is so your colour. But holy crap, black is totally Zoey’s colour.”
Tori decided to ignore him and sat herself on Felix’s lap so she could see the computer. “You should’ve seen some of the outfits they brought out. That was the most mild one.”
“It’s not bad at all.” Felix said. “You can see your abs, and a little bit of your...” He trailed off.
“My cleavage, Felix?” She raised an eyebrow.
“Yes. Not that I was looking. It does look great though.” He said awkwardly.
“Let’s stop talking about Tori’s boobs and talk about other things.” Chan begged.
“Are there posters?” Jeongin asked.
“I’m buying all of them!” Hyunjin insisted. “And you’re signing them all.”
“Why?” She laughed. “You know me, it isn’t that cool.”
“Screw you, get Zoey to sign them.” Jisung begged.
Tori rolled her eyes. “Yes, there will apparently be posters, but I’m  not putting any up unless we put up Stray Kids posters too.”
“Why?” Minho asked. “You’re going solo, it’s a big deal.”
“I am not going solo.” She said firmly. “I did one collab. I’m a part of Stray Kids.”
“Of course you are.” Woojin patted her shoulder. “But we’re allowed to be proud of you.”
“Yeah,” Felix wrapped his arms around her from behind. “We made that. We’re just taking credit for our achievement.”
“We did not ‘make her’.” Chan laughed. “She was that talented when I found her.”
“Not true, and you know it.” She smiled. “But fine, I will get a poster. And yes, Jisung, I will get Zoey to sign one for you.”
“I love you. I’m so glad we’re friends.” He said earnestly.
Tori snorted. “But you guys really like it? I was most nervous about what all of you would think.”
“We love it.” Changbin promised. “You look like a badass. And I’m sure the song is great.”
“You said there’s three songs?” Hyunjin remembered suddenly. “I thought it was just one.”
Tori nodded, leaning back into Felix. “Yeah, the intro is called Femme, and I did that. It’s like a vocal intro. And the outro is called Fatale and Zoey did an amazing little rap piece for it.
“You did an actual solo song, noona?” Jeongin said in disbelief.
She shrugged. “It’s only like a minute or so. It isn’t much.”
“It’s still freaking awesome.” Felix cheered. “I’m setting this as my phone background. But I’ll zoom in on you, since you’re BAE.”
Tori cringed. “Please don’t say that.”
“Funny this is my background too. Except I’m zooming on on someone else.”
“Jisung, don’t be a perv. Please don’t be weird with my friend.” Tori asked.
“I’m not being weird!” He exclaimed. “She genuinely one of my favourite rappers in the industry. And yes, she’s hot, but that’s not the only reason I like her.”
“Fine, but if I see that you zoomed in on her boobs were going to have a problem.” Tori told him.
“I mean...”Minho looked at the picture that was still up on the screen. “They are very...present.”
“It’s Zoey. That’s kind of her thing. And she rocks it.”
“She sure does.” Jisung sighed.
Chan poked him. “You’re being weird.”
“Why am I being weird? Why can Felix set Tori as his background but it’s strange if I set Zoey?”
“Felix, are you zooming in on my boobs?”
“Do you want me to?” He winked. “Cuz there isn’t much there.”
“Yah!”

An Exclusive Interview With The Pop Trio NoEXIT All About Their Newest Album in 15 Years!
Tumblr media
The pop boy band NoEXIT which is made up of Mark Jeremy Barry, Derek Mcnally and Stephen Adel Burns recently reunited after a 15-year hiatus!
Their forthcoming album, “Powerstation” was produced by NoEXIT, Jonathan Radford Mead, Steve Chrisanthou (Corinne Bailey Rae) & Firebox and is set for release this Friday on October 11th via Topanga Creek Records and The Orchard. Pre-order/pre-save is available now.
To coincide with the release of Powerstation, the group has one of a kind, unique items up for grabs on their website. Items on the store include the NoEXIT Vintage Merch Bundle (1 vintage signed postcard, 2 vintage stickers, set of four pins, and three guitar picks), an acoustic video performance of each buyer’s chosen song, a short video message from the band and disposable cameras filled with images taken in the studio, on tour, or around town.
Other exclusive items include a handwritten & signed lyric sheet for one NoEXIT song of your choosing, a signed polaroid photo (no two are alike) of the band and, of course, the new album signed by the band.
NoEXIT are excited to announce new North American & UK tour dates. The tour is set to kick off in San Diego on November 3rd and wrap up on December 16th in Glasgow, UK.  The tour, dubbed “Back Here” after their massive 1999 worldwide hit, travelled through such cities as Boston (SOLD OUT), New York, Nashville & Austin, TX this past May.
Their newest video released is for the track “Uncivil War.”
So what motivated the three of you to get back into the studio and create your new album, “Powerstation”?
Well, basically, we obviously remained friends. We still stayed in touch over the years and it was really just over a couple of years ago now that we got together just for a social gathering and we just got a guitar and started jamming and we fell straight back into it.
And I posted the video on my socials and it went crazy. We got two million views and people saying, “Oh, you know, do some more music.” And we did realize how much we actually missed performing together and singing together. So we just started writing and then, yeah. And here we are.
I mean we’ve been approached over the years to do stuff by TV companies and agents wanting us to get back together. But we just didn’t feel like the right time, but this just felt like a real natural time for us to kind of get together and do some more stuff.
What was it like once you got into the studio? Did you approach it any differently than your past records?
Do you know what? I mean, obviously, you know, 15 years is a long time to spend before putting anything out so obviously, we’ve evolved as musicians and we’ve had different experiences. We’re trying a few different things, but ultimately, as soon as we start singing, it just sounds like NoEXIT. We did try a few different things, but I think the fans are going to be really happy with the album. You know, it definitely sounds like a NoEXIT album. So yeah, we’re happy with how it turned out.
Can you talk about some of the inspiration behind some of the songs on this album?
Yeah, I mean, I guess the main thing is, we’ve had 15 years of life experience to kind of … have 15 years of life. So we’ve got a lot more to write about now on the album. So I think, as far as the album, it has definitely evolved. I mean, one of my favorites on the album is Powerstation’s last track of the album. Yeah. It is a nostalgic song about the old days and the future. So yeah, there’s a lot more to write about these days, I guess, on the album.
And how did you go about picking Bullet Train to be the lead single?
Well, Bullet Train was actually the first song we wrote on this new batch of songs for this new album. Coincidentally, we wrote it first and you know, that was a special song for us. And it’s just a very catchy sing-along chorus and we just thought it’s a real good bridging song to bridge the last album, which is awhile ago, to the new album. It’s not a million miles away from the old sound. So yeah, we just thought that was a good one to put out first.
I’m curious how you think that the music industry has grown and changed since you guys have been apart of it? How have you evolved with the times?
I mean, it’s a very, very different industry now since 2000 and 2003. I’ve remained in the music industry all that time and I’ve seen it evolve and change and I think, ultimately, although it’s very different, there’s so much more you can do now and you can connect. That’s gold, to be able to connect direct with the fans.
This time around, we’re definitely embracing social media. You know, we didn’t have social media … it was before Myspace, even, on our last album. So we’re embracing it this time and we are enjoying the … We can speak, we can chat with all the fans and we can directly speak to everyone. So it’s very different, but yeah, you know, it’s also very good, and yeah, we’re loving it. It’s great. It’s just a great way for organizing shows and tours and everything. You can get so much data and stuff now online and diagnostics and kind of analytics. So yeah, it’s really great. It’s a great time to be in the music industry, I think. It’s exciting.
Speaking of touring, I know you did a few shows earlier this summer, right? And then you have a bigger fall tour hopefully planned?
Yes, that’s correct. We did a bunch of shows over on the east coast and that was in May. It was amazing just to get back out on the road. We did 15 shows. It was so much fun. We loved being out on the road together. So yeah, we’re doing some more shows in November.
Have you been surprised at all by the reception from your fans? When you go on tour, are you surprised at how people have welcomed you with open arms?
It’s been incredible. We didn’t know when we came back what it would be like. “We’re like, Is anyone going to remember us?” We literally had to start from scratch again with social media, with everything. We were like, “Let’s just get something out and let’s just start doing some stuff.” We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed with the response from people, you know, coming out to see us, coming to many shows and just showing their support and all the people at the NoEXIT street team who’ve been doing an amazing job. We’re really blessed to have such amazing fans.
And now you have the ability to reach those fans that you had back then and their children. That’s pretty cool!
Exactly. I mean it makes me feel old but it’s great. We have a lot of people coming to the shows and bringing the kids. Parents with the kids. You know, introducing them, because then the kids knew all the songs as well, you know?
Because they were singing along because their parents have been playing it to them. So it’s really nice to see that it’s a new generation of people getting to hear the music as well.
And I really think that this is a great time for bands like you to resurface and introduce us to new music because there are so many bands that are coming back and it’s very nostalgic and it’s awesome. It’s a good climate for it all.
Like I said before, we just felt it was the right time to come back with new music. Just because I’m really enjoying it and there’s no pressure and it’s just really nice, you know?
So how did the three of you keep busy during the 15 year gap. I know you said that you were involved with music. In what capacity?
Yeah, I mean, I’ve done many collaborations with the big dance guys, like TST, AvB and others. I had a big hit with TST in 2007, so I’ve been doing a lot of dance music for the past kind of 10 years, really. And also, me and my good friend, 3T, we have a band called /\HTS, and we’ve just been out on the road for seven weeks with Howard Jones, all over America. So yeah, I’ve been up blessed enough to be able to do music for the past 15 years in something I love. Yeah, it’s been an amazing journey so far. It’s been busy, but all good.
What musicians do you think have continued to inspire you over the years? Who was inspiring you back then and who still is today?
Back in the day when I was younger, it was always the bands I listened to as a kid, like the Beatles and the Eagles and the Electric Light Orchestra. All these songs that my parents … Motown I listened to. But in newer times, I guess, I think, bands like U2, who have been around for a long time. Coldplay always seem to reinvent themselves and come back and sound fresh, with great songs. Just some of those big bands really impress me and, bands with longevity who keep knocking out great, great albums, and consistently good, I guess. Yeah.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music?
Ultimately we just want people to enjoy the music as much as we enjoy creating it in the studio. We’ve put our heart and souls into the album. And you know, when it comes to a live show, we just want them to enjoy it because we have so much fun on stage. We genuinely absolutely love every second of it.
So hopefully they can get a bit of that from us and take some of that energy from the shows. But yeah, we ultimately just want people to get enjoyment from it. We get all kinds of lovely letters and messages from people over the years who’ve said how much our music’s helped them in situations or in tough times and stuff and it’s always nice for us to hear. So as long as some people are getting something positive from the music, then we’re doing our job right.

Todrick Hall speaks out about Taylor Swift video backlash
Yahoo Music: So when some people saw you dancing in “Look What You Made Me Do,” they were not pleased, to put it mildly. What exactly happened?
Todrick Hall: They saw a clip, just a few seconds, that featured Taylor Swift standing in a line of dancers, and they started forming all types of conclusions. I was just very confused by that, because I knew that there was nothing “Formation”-esque or Lemonade-esque about the video. Artistically, I didn’t feel that was the case. I’m a humongous Beyoncé fan. I’ve worked with Beyoncé. I’ve choreographed for Beyoncé. And I would never intentionally be a part of art that I felt was ripping off my favorite artist of all time. But I felt like these were two completely different lanes.
“Sellout” was one of the common names you were called.
Yes, one of the main things that people said was, “He wanted to make his money. Well, good for him, he got paid. And I guess payment is enough for you to sell out your family, your people, your community.” But this had nothing to do with money. I didn’t do this Taylor Swift video for money. I did it because she’s my friend, and she was very excited about it. And she wanted people to be there who she could trust, because it was a very big undertaking. I was proud to be there, but money was not a factor for me. I don’t do things for money.
But there are people online who have a problem with the fact in general that you and Taylor are friends?
Yes, I have gotten comments from people who are upset and have literally said the fact that I am friends with a white person is a problem, because white people don’t possess the ability to love or ever truly care about black people. And I find that very disheartening. I’ve grown up in a neighborhood where I went to church with and lived with and went to school with beautiful black people; when I look at them, I see myself. But then I was also in a peculiar situation, because I danced in a dance group where I was the only black person in the dance studio. In some cases, I was the only black cheerleader in my school. I did theater where I was the only black person, the “token black person.” And working at Disney, oftentimes I was the only black person in the show at Disney World or Disneyland on any given day. And I also did tours where I was the only black singer; I did a cruise ship where I was the only black person in the cast. So I’ve been used to being in situations where I’ve had to find friendships and find love and find similarities. My whole brand, everything that I stand for and everything I’ve always stood for, is equality and love. So it’s just really difficult for me to understand why it is an issue for people, a legitimate issue, that I have white friends, and that Taylor Swift happens to be one of my many white friends.
Apparently there’s a thing called the “cookout,” which is like your invitation to be a part of the black community. Some people have, like, deemed themselves the Woke Police, and they decide to strip you online of your invitation to attend the “cookout.” It boggles my mind that people are deciding whether or not I’m down enough, black enough, or woke enough to be “invited.” If I have to hate people and judge people based on their race, sexual orientation, or religion, then sorry, but I’d rather order pizza.
What is Taylor really like? Describe your bond.
What people are mostly forgetting is that Taylor Swift really is my friend. Sometimes because she is a celebrity of such a huge status, inarguably one of the biggest stars of our generation, people forget that there is a human side to her, that she has real friends that she calls and talks to about her real problems. And I call her, and I have cried on her shoulder about my own relationship issues and family issues and career issues. We are friends, and so when she asked me to do this video, I said absolutely. It wasn’t a question for me. I trust her, and I had no problem doing the video. And I just think that it’s really sad and shocking that me doing four eight-counts of choreography is enough to make people feel the need to question my “blackness” or “wokeness.”
Taylor came to see me in Kinky Boots and she stayed after the show for two hours and met every single person in that cast — took pictures, signed stuff, met every usher, every custodian, every orchestra member, every producer and their kids. And then she went outside and met fans outside the theater afterwards, stayed there for over two and a half hours after the show and wouldn’t leave until every single person had been met. There are just very few celebrities in the world who would do something like that. She didn’t have to do that. She could’ve come to the show, said hi to me, and left. That’s just what type of person she is, and what type of person she’s always been. Her parents raised her so well, and when you’re in the room with them, you can feel that energy.
It just is shocking to me that people will see an image of her and hear stories online about her, or arguments with other celebrities who she did not ask to be involved with, who recorded her against her will without her knowing and then decided to release six-second clips of a conversation that happened to paint her to be this evil person that I don’t believe that she is. Come on, we’ve watched millions of episodes of Law & Order or seen Judge Judy a million times; how are they not able to conclude that there is something missing from this? If you feel the need to record someone on video with people there, the intentions may not have been the most pure.
Some of the criticism Taylor has received recently has to do with the fact that she has not been politically outspoken in past years, like some of her peers Katy Perry or Lady Gaga.
Yeah, many people have been tweeting me, “She supports Trump! She probably voted for Trump!” They’re making this huge assumption, when Taylor has never to my knowledge come out and said anything about her being pro-Trump. But people would still rather believe that she is the one who is pushing Trump’s agenda. That was one of the major things that was tweeted at me, and I’m like, “So you are mad that you think she might support Donald Trump? But you’re not mad that Kanye has been very openly pro-Trump?” I don’t understand that.
Look, I’m not Taylor Swift, so I can’t speak for her and why she does or does not choose to speak or not speak about any specific subject matter. All I know is that she has been nothing but a great person to me. Her family has welcomed me into their home and treated me like I was a member of the family. They’ve welcomed every single person I’ve ever brought around them. I’ve never felt like there was ever a moment that I couldn’t be myself, and talk about the fact that I’m gay or whatever. At Thanksgiving, we all sat around and talked about it, and there was another one of her friends there who was African-American, and we all sat down and talked about racism and watched 13th on Netflix and talked about how important it was. It was one of the most beautiful conversations I’ve ever had, because sometimes as an African-American person I feel like I can’t voice my opinion about how difficult it is to be not just an African-American person in the entertainment industry, but how scary it is to be black in America, in even 2017.
When it comes to Taylor, all I know is that she has been a sweet, amazing human being to me. When she calls me, it’s hardly ever to talk about her accomplishments or things that she’s going through. She calls me and says, “How’s your heart? Are you OK?” I’ve been around her an awful lot, and if it were some type of crazy, fake façade, I think I would have figured it out by now. I feel like it’s a genuine part of who she is, and she’s a human being. Has she made mistakes? Yes. Will she make mistakes again? Yes. But let the person in America who has not made mistakes raise their hand.
I think that I’m on my own journey; every artist is on their own journey. Maybe one day, Taylor will start being super-political, and using her voice to do thing that people think that she should be doing. But even then, she will probably be ridiculed for not being vocal enough, or not being on the right side. I don’t think that there is a way to win in this industry, so every person has to take their own journey at their own pace, at their own time, and do what they feel like is right. All I know is that Taylor has been nothing but sweet to me since day one, and if she asks me to do a video, I’m absolutely going be there.
I’m not apologizing for being a part of the video and doing four eight-counts of choreography in it. I thought it was a great piece of art. I thought it was awesome. It’s broken so many records and I’m proud to be a part of it. I don’t think I’ve sold out my race or my community — the gay community, the black community. I think that I was just in a piece of art that my friend made. I’m not issuing a statement to people about it to explain myself, because there’s nothing to explain. I’m not sorry that I did it, and I don’t think that it was a mistake. If I had a do-over, I would absolutely be there for another eight hours, in heels, dancing with her.
Is Taylor aware of the heat you’ve gotten for being in her video?
I have talked to her about it, and she has been very uplifting and given me a lot of information about how when you’re doing big things, there will always be people who have something to say about it. But I think that Beyoncé gave me the best advice when I met her. She said, “Don’t scroll down. Don’t go down and look at comments, and when you do something as an artist, make a decision and stick to it. You don’t need to apologize for things that you’ve done.” I use that all the time.
You have gotten this sort of criticism before.
Yeah. In the beginning, it was because I did videos based on stereotypes of a particular group that put people in a negative light. And so I took those notes, because I consider myself to be a humble person, and I tried to apply them, and tried to do less work on my YouTube channel that stereotyped people, less work that stereotyped my race as being “ghetto” or “ratchet,” because I did understand the argument. I think it’s a really difficult thing when you toe the line with comedy, because there are certain things that some people are going to think is funny, but then some people are always going to be offended. The political climate has changed so much over the past months since Donald Trump became president, and it has just been a very scary place to create content online. So I tried to do whatever I can to create content that everyone can love and that is inclusive of everybody.
It’s just something that I deal with every day. I wrote an album about my life [Straight Outta Oz], about how I fell in love at 19 years old with a boy who was British and who just happened to be white. I wrote a song called “Color,” and in the song I say the line, “You’re my favorite hue.” What I meant by that when I wrote the song was it’s supposed to be a direct relation to the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, and then everything turns to color when Dorothy gets to Oz. I felt like my whole world was black and white before I met this person. But people took that as that white was my favorite color, and that was what I preferred. People have assumed that am the type of person that refuses to date people of my own race or associate with people of my own race. Which, I don’t feel the need to prove to them that I have in fact dated multiple black men and Puerto Rican, Latino men. I’m an equal opportunist when it comes to love. I think everyone is beautiful. You fall in love with a person, not the outer layer of skin.
It’s really frustrating because I don’t think that people realize that when I got to L.A., I lived in not a great neighborhood. A policeman drove up onto a sidewalk, got out of the car, pushed my face on the ground, put my hands on my back, pulled a gun out on me. I have never felt so scared in my entire life. I have witnessed so many things like that. It’s very difficult for me to go and spend time in a predominantly Caucasian neighborhood without the cops being called on me, because people don’t know why I’m there and they think I look suspicious. I have had a lot of issues and dealt with racism in the same capacity as a lot of other people. I have written so many songs, even on Straight Outta Oz, about the Black Lives Matter movement, because it’s something that I’m very passionate about. It’s something that I definitely use my voice and my platform to speak out against. So it’s frustrating that people who have never met me in person like to make huge, incorrect assumptions about me and go and scream them and yell them from the rooftops online.
I just strongly feel that if we can’t get along within our own race, and have to point fingers and yell at people who we think don’t have our back when we don’t know anything about them — we haven’t listened to the facts, we haven’t seen the footage, there are no receipts to show that this person is not a proud African-American person who isn’t down to fight for equality for everyone’s sake — if we fight with each other so much that we’re tearing down our own race and our own community, how does that make us any better than the people in Charlottesville, carrying the tiki torches? How are we any better than those people, and how are we ever going to meet in the middle and finally be able to say, “Let’s be one unified group of people”? I just don’t understand how it’s possible, and that what makes me so upset.
Online outrage is at an all-time high right now, for sure. Everyone is on edge.
I think that we’ve got to figure out a way within our own community to stop tearing people down and stop making assumptions and looking for reasons to be mad. I don’t know what is happening in the world right now, but now is a scary time. People are looking for someone to blame and someone to point fingers at. I don’t think that Taylor Swift is the problem with America right now. People can try to make that be the issue, but there is a much bigger issue here in our country that we need to look at and recognize, and figure out what we can do to be a part of making the world a better place, to be nice and sweet and kind to each other, and to realize that racism is a huge horrible thing that has kept a lot of people down.
But I think it’s going to take every race, every minority, every gay person, every trans person, every straight person, waking up and realizing that we can’t do this alone. We can’t divide into our own little sections and decide that we’re going to secretly hate each other and be mad if one person goes over and shakes the hand of somebody on the other team. We all need to be one team. We all have to go out and extend an olive branch to each other and try to help each other out and try to build one another up. That’s the only way that we can be successful. That’s the only way that we can make this world the beautiful place that God created it to be. Spread love, and love each other. That’s what I try to do.
Did you engage with any of your online critics about this video?
I gave no negative tweets, didn’t argue with people on social media, had nothing to say to them. But I even went so far as to give somebody my phone number online so they could call me and said, “If you feel I’ve done something that’s offended you, or if you could shed some light on as to how me being involved with this video or being friends with Taylor Swift — other than the fact that she is white and you feel that she is the epitome of white privilege, the poster child for white privilege … If there’s anything you can do to shed some light to me as to how I can be a better example for young African-American kids growing up, then I would love to talk to you on the phone.” And I meant it. And I talked to them, and I felt like we came to a good place. I’m a humble person; I’m not opposed to taking constructive criticism.
There was a time two years ago where I would’ve damn near gotten carpal tunnel because I would’ve stayed up all night trying to argue back and forth [on Twitter], thinking, “What would Regina George do?” Now I’m adopting the policy, “What would Beyoncé do?” So I’m going to kill all these people with kindness. I’m going to be nice to them, and I’m just going to prove to them, one by one when they meet me, what type of person I am. Support my friends, be nice to people, and do what I have to do to be a good human being and play my part in society and in this crazy political climate.
Obviously I’m not diminishing the horrible things that have happened to get us to this point, but at this point we have a choice to either band together and fight and talk about the real issues and the real problems, and Taylor Swift is not the problem. If we can all accept the fact that there is a bigger problem and start having dialogue and talking to each other — not just with the people that it’s comfortable for us to talk to, our own people and people who look like us, but to people who might not understand where we’re coming from or what we’ve been through — then we might get closer to making this world a unified place, the way that Michael Jackson sang about in his songs and in his music. While I know that is not the theme of “Look What You Made Me Do,” I do believe that is the theme of Taylor Swift’s heart and the person that she truly is on a personal level.

An Unbiased View of Music Vlog
Explore the world by means of You, Tube travel channels and vlogs Nathan Hutchinson/ Getty Images, The art of travel has actually altered beyond all acknowledgment in the past couple of years. What as soon as cost a fortune and took weeks of preparation can now be documented on a phone and by scheduling a flight en route to the airport. First person games research
Call of Duty COD is one of the easiest first person games to talk about, because it’s been basically the same for about 200 years. It’s a basic first person shooter, the story is badly written and disinteresting, and the game is basically an overpriced multiplayer mode with an optional game tacked onto it. But that’s sort of ok, if you’re the type of person who enjoys that sort of thing, because the gunplay is pristine. It’s beautifully designed so that the guns have a visceral kick to using them, and sound great. It’s extremely polished, and I personally see it as a baseline for all other, better shooters to work from.
Tumblr media
Return of the Obra Dinn Return of the Obra Dinn is much more my speed than COD. It’s a contemplative, first person detective game set on a ship, and is, without a doubt, one of the best games ever made. Set on the abandoned ship, Obra Dinn, you are tasked with solving the fates of the 60 crew members. To my mind, it’s still the only game that’s ever done detective work properly. It has measures in place to stop you brute forcing the problem with trial and error, like the fact that you have to solve 3 murders at a time before the game will verify if they are correct or not. At the same time, the puzzles aren’t super easy and your character is completely mute, so you don’t have any of those moments where you’ve very cleverly worked something out for yourself and the protagonist proudly shouts out “I THINK THE ANSWER IS...,” completely ruining the moment for you. It leaves you to deduce things from clues and it leaves you with a genuine feeling of accomplishment whenever you solve a set of deaths. The main downside is that you can only ever play it for the first time once, which is a weird thing to say about a game, but once you’ve solved it for the first time, you can never solve it properly again. You definitely won’t feel the same sense of accomplishment.
Tumblr media
Portal Portal isn’t a puzzle game. It’s the puzzle game. The quintessential puzzle game. It was unique among first person games at the time, because in 2007, the top selling first person games were Call of Duty, Halo and Bioshock. While these were all (and by that I mean Bioshock) extremely good, important games, they were all, on a moment to moment basis, about killing a bunch of dudes in a grimy corridor. Portal, on the other hand, was about subtly dark humour, complicated physics puzzles and accidentally creating one of the most universally recognised memes in all of internet history. It was witty and challenging and amazing. Portal 2 was also an amazing game, but compared to the original, it felt less experimental, and more focused on showing of big set pieces, which wasn’t fully in line with the original’s themes. It’s still one of the best games ever made. But Portal 1 is better.
Tumblr media
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind  Morrowind is, in my eyes, the perfect Elder Scrolls game. It has good characters, an awesome world, and the most ideal core gameplay loop for an open world RPG of it’s type. It forces you to take notes of your surroundings, read road signs and actually talk to people to ask for directions. Morrowind gives me the feeling I get when I watch Lord Of the Rings, except it’s not about some big world ending threat (it is, but it doesn’t really feel it.) I’m just an ex-convict, wandering around the world, finding a guild to join and starting a life for myself. It’s the melancholic, slow pace that I want to take over to a game more based around characters and detective style gameplay.
Tumblr media
Bulletstorm The shotgun sounds like god slamming his car door, and you have a grappling hook. You can power slide in and kick a dude into orbit. The story sucks, but it doesn’t matter.
Tumblr media
Doom Doom (the original, 2, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal that is. Not Doom 3) are some of the most important shooters in the industry because they’re fun. The original game was from a time before shooters all got bogged down in gritty realism and was just about a guy who could run at the land speed record indefinitely, and was literally killing his way out of hell. It’s fast paced, gory and just plain fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subnautica  Subnautica is a first person survival exploration game. The only thing that really needs mentioning in Subnautica is the fact that it controls absolutely beautifully underwater, it truly feels amazing. Also literal terror.
Tumblr media
Superhot Superhot is an innovative idea, in that time only moves when you move, or rather, the game slows down immensely and gives the gunfights a really slow, methodical feel to them.
