it’s always so funny when i have to explain to people that the reason i have a portuguese surname, despite not being portuguese, is because they colonised my country. it’s extra funny when the person is portuguese themselves. like you’re trying to find solidarity with someone who is, presumably, from the same country as you, which is nice. unfortunately, my ancestors were executed by the portuguese for rebelling against them
